NEWSLETTER

merrychristmas Residents recycle Council’s climate response Council is implementing a range of sustainability initiatives including improving pedestrian and bicycle routes, installing solar panels and planting additional street trees, following Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency in November. As part of Council’s strategy, a newly recruited environmental specialist is preparing Council’s Climate Change Action Plan and Resilience Strategy which will outline potential actions for Council to consider – with options assessed against economic, environmental and social outcomes. The Action Plan will be structured around a number of key themes, aligning it with Council's existing environmental framework, and the community will be consulted on potential major actions and strategy directions. In the meantime, Council is proceeding with a range of projects, including consulting on its Active Transport Plan to reduce reliance on cars, installing solar panels on the Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre to reduce CO2 emissions and exploring the potential acceleration of conversion of residential street lighting to LED as well as continuing it’s comprehensive sustainability education program.

Mosman residents have proven to be responsible recyclers with a recent waste audit and education campaign of 576 multi-unit blocks showing minimal bin contamination. The campaign, which aimed to encourage people to maximise recycling and reduce confusion about what can be recycled, revealed excellent results with bluelidded bins achieving an average contamination rate below 1 per cent and yellow-lidded bins recording less than 5 per cent. Correct recycling, including keeping thin plastics such as plastic bags out of recycling bins, reduces household waste and contamination rates. Recycling and green waste material has a range of uses: § Glass (yellow lid) is converted into road base, cement, sand blast medium and other products § Hard container plastics (yellow lid) are mostly washed and flaked on the Central Coast for remanufacturing § Metals (yellow lid) are taken to an Australian recycler § Paper and cardboard (blue lid) are pulped and used to manufacture new cardboard, boxes and packaging § Garden organics (green lid) are made into compost at Kimbriki and facilities in Sydney’s west.

Climate response continued Council also became a member of the Cities Power Partnership in August, which provides climate disruption resources and news on the latest developments to reduce greenhouse gases and achieve better environmental outcomes. Other initiatives include: § Increasing CO₂ absorption and reduction of heat through annual planting of mature street trees, building resilience of bushland areas and protection of private tree canopy § Bush fire management through the bush fire risk management plan and hazard reduction activities § Filtration and harvesting of stormwater, reducing pollution in Sydney Harbour via the SQID program using harvested stormwater for irrigation § Rebuilding seawalls for protection and for increased habitat for intertidal marine creatures § Education and initiatives to reduce waste generation and use of single-use plastics and further improve recycling rates and § Council and community energy and water use initiatives and monitoring. The Climate Action Plan and Resilience Strategy will build on Council’s capacity to respond to the changing climate and set a clear policy direction for Mosman.

Active Transport Strategy

Residents are being asked to share some information about themselves and their ideas for the area to help increase the liveability of Mosman. Council will use information obtained during surveys for the Mosman Active Transport Strategy 2020-25 to direct planned pedestrian and cycle infrastructure improvements in Mosman over the next five years. The work paves the way for new improvements to make walking and riding more commonplace, which will contribute to a more liveable environment and a healthier community. Visit yourvoicemosman.com.au to find out more and have your say until Thursday 9 April.

First Nations focus

Megan Cope, Pulan Pulan, 2019

Mosman Art Gallery will focus on First Nations artists' work during its Autumn exhibition program from 28 March to 17 May. The program, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook's first voyage to Australia, will include a solo exhibition by Quandamooka artist Megan Cope and the restaging of the highly successful Bungaree's Farm exhibition. Megan Cope's works include The Black Napoleon, a series of prints reflecting on the story of Aboriginal leader Eulope who led the Quandamooka people in their resistance against British forces and the installation, RE FORMATION I, in which Cope recreates significant shell midden sites from her country. Bungaree's Farm is an exhibition of contemporary Aboriginal audio, video, performance and installation art exploring the legacy of Aboriginal leader Bungaree, who was a central figure in early colonial Sydney. The exhibition was originally showcased in the T5 Camouflage Fuel Tank at Georges Heights, on the site of Bungaree's Farm, in 2015. In The Cube space, Lismore-based Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens is also presenting her video work, Mother's Little Helper. The work reflects on the relationship to 'Mother Earth' and equipping the next generation with the right skills and knowledge to make positive change.

A better Mosman for 55+

Council has donated $10,000 for bushfire relief and recovery from its Emergency Services Levy Account to support the nation's recovery from the recent overwhelming crisis. Council resolved at its February meeting to donate $5,000 each to the Country Women's Association Disaster Relief Fund and the Taronga Conservation Society Wildlife Crisis Appeal. In a Mayoral Minute, Mayor Carolyn Corrigan noted the many fundraising initiatives that have already been undertaken in Mosman and the generous donations made by local residents.

How to make a difference Here are some simple steps residents can take to reduce greenhouse gases in our atmosphere: ยง Purchase renewable energy for household needs and consider installing solar panels for your house or unit block ยง Leave the car at home more often and improve your health and well being by walking, catching public transport and car-pooling or sharing ยง Plant trees and shrubs on your property where possible and ยง Incorporate vegetarian options in your weekly shopping and mealplanning.

Give back to the gallery

Senior residents, their family members, other interested community members and service providers are being invited to share their views as Council reviews its strategies to support residents aged 55 years and over. The survey enables participants to comment on issues such as outdoor spaces, transport, housing, social participation, respect and inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community and health services. Results will be considered as Council works to identify the best ways to continue working with the community to support older residents in leading active, healthy, and engaged lives. Visit Council's online consultation hub at yourvoicemosman.com.au and complete the survey before Friday 3 April or call 9978 4128. Printed surveys are available from Mosman Square Seniors Centre and Barry O'Keefe Library.

Slow Down for safety

Art-loving residents are being encouraged to support Mosman Art Gallery's Hunters & Collectors donor program to facilitate the development and conservation of the renowned Mosman Art Collection. The program includes a series of social events, enabling donors to meet artists, collectors, curators and leaders in the visual arts. From now until the end of May donations will be doubled by the Federal Government. Find out more at mosmanartgallery.org.au/hunters-collectors

Temporary signs have been installed on Moruben Road for a six-week trial road safety project to encourage drivers to slow down on local roads. The Slow Down initiative includes education via social media and speed surveys as well as the installation of reusable signage, made from recyclable plastic, along the length of Moruben Road. With speed the highest contributing factor in car crashes in Mosman, the project aims to remind motorists to stay below the urban limit of 50 km/h. Speed-related fatalities contribute to about 40 per cent of road deaths each year, while even small reductions in vehicle speed, as little as 5 km/h, can reduce the number of deaths and the severity of injuries caused by crashes. If the trial and public consultation indicate that the slow down project is successful and supported, it may be rotated on a temporary basis through other streets. To have a say on the project visit yourvoicemosman.com.au by Friday 1 May.
