New parking apps More services resume The relaxation of NSW government-mandated COVID-19 rules has enabled Council to increase the number of visitors to council meetings and other facilities and programs. The change in capacity limits now allows up to 40 members of the public to attend council meetings, which also continue to be webcast. Mosman Library Service has relaunched live events, with regular author events already proving popular with audiences. The Thursday Kids art and craft program for five to 12 year olds has resumed in-person by advance booking, while weekly Storytime and Babytime in-person sessions will restart next term. Weekly Friday luncheons and regular events have been reintroduced at Mosman Square Seniors Centre and social bus outings have also resumed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with bookings essential by calling the Community Care team on 9978 4128. Events featuring exhibiting artists are again being held at Mosman Art Gallery with a special Stitch and Sip workshop on 14 April with artist Rhonda Prior for the Artists of Mosman: 2088 exhibition, a Still Life Painting for Teens session on 15 May and a talk with artist Kate Dorrough on 22 May. Weekly youth drop-in afternoons, with access to Nintendo, pool and table tennis facilities, have resumed at Mosman Youth Centre on Mondays and Fridays and a range of workshops and activities are planned for the April school holidays. See the back page or visit events.mosman.nsw.gov.au for more information about events and programs.

Mosman motorists will soon have access to two pay-by-app services following the roll-out of the NSW government’s Park’nPay app to Mosman last July and the introduction of an alternative app, CellOPark. Both apps can be used to pay for parking in foreshore parking areas, including The Spit, Balmoral, Clifton Gardens, Rosherville Reserve and also near Taronga Zoo. The CellOPark app enables users to begin payment when they arrive and end payment when they leave, thereby only paying for the time they occupy the parking spot, rather than having to estimate the time they will stay. CellOPark users who are also parking permit holders will not be charged for the ‘free’ threehour period to which permit holders are entitled. Users of the Park’nPay app can pay upon arrival, avoid fines by receiving notifications when parking is about to expire and top up via phone. Parking meters will have information displayed about both apps.

Keep supporting our local businesses by Thinking Mosman First! Participating business operators wish to thank the community for continuing to shop locally. Visit mosmanchamber.com.au for more information.

An inclusive community Council is seeking input from people with disability, carers, service providers and peak bodies to help shape the practical steps it can take over the next four years to make Mosman a more inclusive community for people with disability. Feedback will inform council’s second Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), due for completion later this year. New accessible toilets near Mosman Junction and an accessibility ramp at Clifton Gardens were delivered with NSW government support following the implementation of the first four-year plan. DIAP consultation workshops include an in-person event at Mosman Square Seniors Centre on Tuesday April 27 from 1pm to 3pm and an online event on Wednesday April 28 from 6pm to 8pm. To complete a DIAP survey visit yourvoicemosman.com.au before 30 April or contact Andrew Smith at Council on 9978 4006 if assistance is required.

Give back to the Gallery

New Allan Border Oval pavilion

Construction of a new pavilion at Allan Border Oval will start in coming weeks following the end of the summer cricket season. The project, which is expected to take just over a year, includes the redevelopment of the existing sports pavilion as well as landscaping and new outdoor facilities such as seating, basketball/netball practice court and barbecues. Facilities on the ground floor of the new pavilion will include change rooms, public toilet amenities, groundkeeper/storage facilities and a kiosk. First floor facilities, accessible via a lift, will include a function room, kitchen, toilets, scorers room and a terrace. The works incorporate a number of environmental initiatives including solar panels, low carbon concrete, cross-ventilation and natural lighting to reduce energy consumption and a rainwater harvesting system to water nearby gardens and lawns.

Celebrating our heritage

Art-loving residents are being encouraged to help enhance Mosman Art Gallery and the renowned Mosman Art Collection by joining the Gallery’s growing group of supporters. Making a donation, becoming a Creative Circle member, or supporting the ongoing Hunters & Collectors Conservation Project, are among ways to help the Gallery achieve its vision as one of Australia’s leading regional galleries. Public support ensures that the Gallery continues to present dynamic exhibitions, while offering inspiring programs and cross-generational engagement with visual arts, building on the recent Hunters & Collectors campaign which raised more than $110,000 for the care and conservation of the art collection’s top 100 artworks. Visit events.humanitix.com/join-and-give to donate.

Mosman Library Service is celebrating the Australian Heritage Festival with two special digital events. An online exhibition will reflect on Mosman’s rich history of community groups while a new series of interviews and photos of local Olympians will be uploaded on the Mosman Faces website. The Stand Up Step Out exhibition will showcase how Mosman residents have engaged with their community by establishing numerous cultural, environmental, sporting and special interest societies since 1890. Some were created in response to particular causes, such as The Mosman and Neutral Bay Rifle Club, which was formed at the outbreak of the First World War, and The Balmoral Progress Association, which was established to rid the beach of an unsightly rubbish tip. The online exhibition can be viewed during the month-long Australian Heritage Festival from 19 April to 19 May at fb.com/mosmanlibrary Meanwhile the latest Mosman Faces story will add to the website’s visual history of the local area by bringing to life the ‘Olympic Families of Mosman’, sharing the swimming, sailing and rowing prowess of several local families. The Mosman Faces update is being launched live on the Mosman Library Service Facebook page on 26 April at 7pm or visit mosmanfaces.net to view more stories.

Protecting our trees

Mosman residents will soon be able to piece together a puzzle of their suburb following the release of a Mosman jigsaw puzzle by the Rotary Club of Mosman. The development of the 1,000-piece double-sided puzzle, which features contemporary and historic images of Mosman, was sponsored by Council. The puzzle can be ordered for $50 via mosmanrotary.org.au with proceeds being used to fund important community projects. Council also recently supported Mosman High School's Mosman Art Walk which transformed shopfronts into virtual art galleries in early March in support of art education, local businesses and artists.

Residents are reminded that tree permit applications must be made to conduct works on protected trees in Mosman after Council issued a record number of Penalty Infringement Notices (PINs) for private tree breaches last year. Mosman Council’s tree management enables the community to benefit from the amenity provided by trees, including habitat and food for native wildlife, shade to reduce localised summer heat and glare and the protection of Mosman’s natural beauty. As well as applying to private properties, the permit process also allows for view pruning of trees on public land – Mosman is one of only two councils that allow such work. For information on tree-related matters visit mosman.nsw.gov.au/trees or download the Trees Mosman app free from the App Store or Google Play. Council’s Open Space Team can be contacted for further information on 9978 4000.

Projects, budget on track Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mosman Council’s MOSPLAN delivery and budget performance are largely on track, with a number of significant capital projects completed and a substantial improvement recorded on the organisation’s projected end of year operating result. Progress reports on the 2020-2021 MOSPLAN Operational Plan and 2020-21 Budget for the October – December 2020 quarter were received and adopted by Council at its February meeting.

Cutting our carbon footprint

Remembering When Local resident Jim Severino tests out the new fast charging unit installed at Mosman Square car park.

A special book and art show are being launched as part of a partnership between Council and the Rotary Club of Mosman to celebrate lives lived in Mosman. The Remembering When project features personal stories, poems and reflections of life in Mosman as well as artworks. The art exhibition will be on display at Mosman Square Seniors Centre from 1 to 14 April. Limited copies of the book will be available for purchase at the centre or by calling 9978 4128. The conversion of Mosman’s street lights to LED is on track for completion in coming weeks. The Ausgrid-funded program, which involves changing 700 existing 50W and 80W street lamps to 18W, will reduce Council’s energy costs by 75 per cent and save about 200 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. The program also builds on the community’s take-up of solar, which has seen the number of households with solar increase by more than 15 per cent from 2019 to 2020, contributing to a reduction in the local carbon footprint. The number of Mosman households with solar has almost doubled since 2014 to nearly 600 properties last year with a corresponding doubling in the volume of surplus energy exported from Mosman to the grid over the same period. To support the shift to electric vehicles, Council has delivered a new public electric vehicle (EV) fast charger in partnership with Evie Networks in Mosman Square Car Park which has already proven popular. Council is also supporting the involvement of Mosman students in its drive to create a more sustainable future through the Zero Emissions Schools Network which had its first meeting last month.
