Issue 34 Winter 2021

NEWSLETTER Space steams ahead Imagine Mosman 2032 Early preparations are underway for Council's next 10-year Community Strategic Plan. This plan, to be known as MOSPLAN 2022-2032, will take effect from 1 July 2022. To ensure that MOSPLAN 2022-2032 appropriately reflects local views and aspirations, a program of community engagement has begun. The program will involve surveys, workshops, discussion forums, interviews, activities for children and young people, and an online engagement site that's accessible 24/7. One of the first things we hope all residents and ratepayers will consider doing is filling out the short 'Imagine Mosman' survey included with this newsletter. There is a reply-paid envelope enclosed for easy return to Council, or you can choose to complete the survey online. The questions being asked in this survey are also included in a longer, independent telephone survey of 400 randomly-selected residents this month. Some readers will already have participated in the telephone survey and we thank you for your time and willingness to share your thoughts.

Council's new Creation Space, a special makerspace and training lab focussing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) programs and activities for all ages, will host its first programs for children and teens during the winter school holidays. The new learning lab, operated by Mosman Library Service, provides a digital creation, learning and development hub for the community with cutting edge technology such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, robots, cricut cutting machines, 360 cameras, coding packages and VR. The Creation Space is due to expand further in mid-2022, with funding recently received through a NSW Government Library Infrastructure Grant for two studio spaces for filming, vlogging and podcasting.

The responses from all these surveys and from further engagement still to come will help collectively paint a picture of what's important to our community, today and in the future. Visit our online community engagement site for an online version of the survey and to learn about other opportunities to provide feedback over coming months. You can access the site at yourvoicemosman.com.au/imaginemosman2032

Upcoming school holidays events in The Creation Space include Dash Robot Puppy Training, 3D Printing Miniatures for Teens and Coding with Bee Bot. For information visit events.mosman.nsw.gov.au/holidays

Coffee pod recycling An innovative pilot program is being launched in Mosman to collect aluminium coffee capsules through kerbside recycling. In an Australian first, recyclers iQ Renew and CurbCycle will begin the program with 5,000 residents in the Mosman and Willoughby council areas. The pilot, which will enable residents to trial the convenience of recycling their aluminium coffee capsules from home, may help develop a national coffee capsule recycling program. The difficulty of separating the capsules, which has been a challenge for kerbside recycling, will be addressed through the use of a ‘Curby Bag’ to separate them from other recycling materials for aggregating and sending on for processing through Nespresso's recycling scheme. The aluminium in collected coffee capsules, which is infinitely recyclable, is recovered and returned to aluminium producers, saving energy required for aluminium produced from scratch, while coffee grounds are used locally for commercial compost. Householders can register from mid-July to participate in the trial after downloading the Curby App.

Pavilion project underway

A key milestone has been passed in the Allan Border Oval Pavilion and Landscaping project, with the demolition of the original pavilion. The project began on 10 May, with the roof proving particularly challenging to bring down. The area has been fenced off for construction and public safety while the oval will remain open during the works which are due to be completed in 12 months' time. Temporary public toilets will be available on the northern side of Mosman Park. Facilities in the new pavilion will include change rooms, public toilet amenities, a kiosk and function room as well as exterior landscaping, barbecue and a practice netball/basketball court. Updates on the project, including a time lapse video of the pavilion demolition, are being posted on works.mosman.nsw.gov.au

Defibrillator locations Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are located around Mosman for use in emergencies involving cardiac arrest. Defibrillators are located in Mosman Civic Centre reception, Mosman Square Seniors Centre, Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre, Balmoral Baths and Tramshed amenities blocks and Balmoral, Middle Head and Rawson ovals. Residents wishing to familiarise themselves with Council owned or managed facilities where debrillators are located can visit mosman.nsw.gov.au/defib An innovative three-month trial to recycle and reprocess singleuse take-away cups into other goods has been extended after strong take-up by the community. Residents will be able to continue to deposit their used cups and lids in dedicated public place coffee cup bins near the entrance to Council in Mosman Square, or at Balmoral or Mosman Bay, until September. Through the Council partnership with Simply Cups and the NSW Environment Protection Authority, liquids, lids and cups are sorted as they are placed into the bin, with liquid and lids being eventually discarded into general waste streams, and the cups sent off for reprocessing into new products, including reusable cups and recycled road surfacing. While the unique program addresses the challenge of waste from single-use cups, wastage can be avoided altogether by using a reusable cup.

September election The election for the next term of Mosman Council, including seven Councillor positions and the position of popularly-elected Mayor, will be held on Saturday 4 September 2021. Residents are reminded to ensure their details are up-to-date with the NSW Electoral Commission ahead of the election, for which voting is compulsory. To view information such as enrolment details, key dates for candidates to enrol and election employment opportunities, visit elections.nsw.gov.au/lge2021

mosman.nsw.gov.au Yellow lines

Playgrounds for all

Mosman motorists are being reminded that yellow lines painted near the edge of a road indicate stopping restrictions on the section of road. An unbroken or continuous yellow line along the kerb means no stopping, even if there isn't a No Stopping sign, except in a medical or similar emergency. No stopping zones without signs are implemented in areas to improve safety and reduce signage and distractions. A broken or dashed yellow kerb line is a Clearway line and indicates drivers must not stop at the edge of the road between the hours shown on the sign, except in a medical or similar emergency, while buses, taxis and hire cars may only stop to pick up or set down passengers.

Australian-made inclusive high-back swing seats are set to be fitted in a number of Mosman playgrounds through a program to replace low-back infant swing seats so all children can participate in play. Local businesses and organisations responded generously by sponsoring more than 10 playground upgrades, made possible by a partnership between Mosman Council, Mosman Chamber of Commerce and social enterprise Play For All Australia. Look for the tech-enabled inclusive swing seat which will be installed when the program is launched at the Balmoral Beach playground on 16 July. This swing, which will feature a built-in counter recording every 'swing swung', will in turn unlock swing upgrades around Mosman. Once activated, the swing's progress can be tracked live at playforall.com.au

Festival of Mosman The 2021 Festival of Mosman will be held from 15 to 24 October and will feature a variety of events for all ages to enjoy. Other key events and activities will include a street party at Mosman Junction, OctoberFeast Night Market, an open-air concert, outdoor cinema screenings, environmental activities and art exhibitions. The festival, which is Mosman’s biggest biennial community celebration, includes events hosted by Mosman Council as well as many local businesses and organisations.

Switch to solar Council is encouraging residents to switch to solar to save money and the planet. The sun doesn't charge for its services so homeowners will see a reduction in power bills and their carbon footprint while adding value and future-proofing their home. A solar battery can also be added to maximise energy and cost savings. The community has already begun to embrace renewable energy with the number of Mosman households with solar increasing by more than 15 per cent from 2019 to 2020, contributing to a reduction in the local carbon footprint. Council provides a range of information to support residents considering switching to solar. To get started visit mosman.nsw.gov.au/solar

Mosman Art Collection will be expanded through an inaugural living bequest of 12 significant artworks. The generous legacy donation by longstanding Mosman Art Gallery supporters Carol and Brian Carrigan bequeaths works by contemporary artist Lucy Culliton, including four which were loaned to the gallery in 2014 for Culliton's exhibition Eye of the Beholder, a Margaret Olley still life and a portrait photograph by Ian Lloyd of Olley painting the work in-situ in her now famous Paddington living room. As second-generation Mosman residents and passionate collectors with a further two generations now living in Mosman, the gallery has held an important place in the Carrigans' lives, with Carol working as a Volunteer Guide for the past five years. The Carrigan collection will complement the gallery's existing works by Mosman Art Prize winners Olley and Culliton and provide further depth to its representation of leading Australian female artists for future generations. For further information on making a living bequest or gift in will contact Mosman Art Gallery on 9978 4164.
