NEWSLETTER

merrychristmas Seasons greetings Key projects on track Mosman Square and Village Green and Allan Border Oval will be revitalised with major works in train for both areas. Detailed designs will be prepared during the next few months for Mosman Square and Village Green. This follows recent public consultation on concept plans for the project and community feedback being considered by Council at its final meeting for 2021. Overall, community feedback was positive, with some suggestions already reflected in revised concept plans and other elements requiring further review during the detailed design phase. The redesign will be the first major refurbishment of the square since 1988, with works expected to be completed in 2022. Construction work on the new Allan Border Oval Pavilion is well underway, with pavilion walls being erected. A rainwater collection tank has also recently been completed with the water to be used in the building and surrounding gardens expected to save 500kl of potable water a year. Facilities in the new pavilion will include change rooms, public toilet amenities, a kiosk and function room as well as exterior landscaping, barbecue and a practice netball/basketball court. Updates on the project, including time lapse videos of the demolition and concrete pour, are being posted on works.mosman.nsw.gov.au The oval remains open during the works which are due to be completed in mid-2022. Temporary public toilets are available on the northern side of Mosman Park.

Destination Sydney

Ramping up recycling Council has introduced a program to encourage solar panel recycling and an education campaign to empower residents to reduce waste. Council is subsidising the recycling of aged solar panels from Mosman homes, businesses and schools this financial year to enable valuable resources to be recovered and remanufactured into new products. Contact mosmansolar@pvindustries.com.au for more information about subsidy conditions or to book a pick-up through the program which is supported by the NSW Environment Protection Authority's Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. A reminder that clean cardboard can also be diverted from landfill by cutting and flattening boxes into blue recycling bins or by taking larger items to Kimbriki Recycling Centre or Suez Artarmon free of charge. Council will also be starting a household food waste audit soon as part of its ongoing efforts to effectively manage local waste and recycling efforts.

Destination Sydney: The natural world features the work of Janet Laurence, Caroline Rothwell and Robyn Stacey. A second exhibition, FULL CIRCLE, which is supported by an Arts Activities Grant from ArtsACT, will feature new work by Lisa Sammut including objects and moving images, drawing on historical astronomical diagrams and illustrations. Waste vehicle fleet

Council's waste vehicle fleet has been given a new look along with the addition of some educational tips to drive home important waste and recycling messages. Each vehicle carries a different key message on each side, while side-loading vehicles have additional light-hearted waste messaging on the rear aimed at capturing the attention of residents through trash-related humour.

EV milestone Council's Evie Networks fast electric vehicle charger in Mosman Square Car Park has marked a significant milestone, saving 10,000kgs of CO2 emissions. The fast charger has proven popular with Mosman motorists since the end of the lockdown with the average number of weekly sessions rising above the pre-lockdown average. The charger has helped curb Mosman's carbon footprint since its installation in December last year, with emissions savings made because electricity supplied through the charger to electric vehicles is renewable, avoiding the burning of fossil fuels. Council expects the use of electric vehicle chargers to grow as more people opt for electric vehicles in coming years.

Community Survey Mosman Council has again recorded strong results in its latest Community Survey with an independent survey of 400 randomly-selected local residents finding that community satisfaction with Council performance has continued its upward trend. Highest rated Council services for satisfaction were keeping food premises safe, cleanliness, appearance and management of public spaces, provision and maintenance of parklands, cleaning of streets and library services. The most significant rise in satisfaction since Council's previous survey was with the condition of public toilets, with the majority of Council services also rating above the industry benchmark for satisfaction. The survey also found that 99% of residents rate their quality of life as good to excellent. Residents particularly value local opportunities for a healthy lifestyle, Mosman's liveable places and spaces, availability of quality educational facilities, the balance between natural and built environments and being part of a tolerant, harmonious community.

Mosman Council, Mosman Chamber of Commerce and local businesses have partnered with social enterprise Play For All Australia to provide upgrades to 12 playgrounds across the local government area. Powered by the generosity of local businesses, the Play It Forward program is replacing 12 low-back infant swing seats in Mosman playgrounds with high-back Australian-made inclusive versions, giving all young children the same opportunity to play, connect and belong regardless of ability. Residents have also played their part, dialling up social inclusion by using a tech-enabled inclusive infant swing seat at Balmoral Beach Playground with a built-in counter that ‘unlocks’ upgrades across Mosman. More than 90,000 swings were counted for inclusion, smashing the program’s original goal of 25,000 swings in 4 weeks. Play for All Australia was established by Caroline Ghatt and Tim Smith, whose son Marcus lived with a significant disability, to generate awareness and dial up social inclusion across local communities. Local businesses Bendigo Community Bank, Di Jones, Harris Farm Markets, Rotary Club of Mosman, Mosman Council, Music N' Me, Play For All Australia, Mosman Toyota, The Works and Vine Apparel have sponsored seats. For more information about the program visit playforall.com.au or email caroline@playforall.com.au

Annual review Council's Annual Report for 2020-2021 was among several key documents presented to Council's final meeting for the year. The Annual Report showed that, despite the impact of the pandemic, most milestones were met across the seven strategic directions of MOSPLAN that guide Council operations. Highlights included nearly 25,000 meals being delivered by Mosman Meals, an increase of 65% against target, a range of popular community events and markets being held, the launch of Council's new website and works on a range of projects including the commencement of the Allan Border Oval Pavilion project and the completion of the refurbishment of Mosman Swim Centre. The Audited Financial Statements for 2020-2021 were also tabled at the meeting, noting a $3.03 million net operating result for the year ending 30 June 2021.

A memorial plaque acknowledging the significant deeds of Flight Lieutenant Charles Ulm, AFC, has been unveiled in Mosman Square. Flt Lt Ulm grew up in Mosman, saw active service in WWI at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, and was badly wounded in France. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision of successful commercial airlines, Ulm later went on to partner Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith in historic flights throughout the world and in the formation of Australian National Airways. Ulm's son, John, pictured at the unveiling ceremony, credits his aviator father with helping to enable modern-day Australians to “jump on and off planes likes buses”.
