From the Editor’s Desk Dear readers, Welcome back to the Over 55s Newsletter for October November and December 2012! As the festive season approaches and this is the last quarterly newsletter for 2012, here is a chance to look back at the great year we had so far and see how we could have an even better year in 2013! First and foremost, here is – finally – an official annoucement that the Choir / singalong group has finally started. After several months of no go, clients will be able to sing and have access to the centre on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month at 2.15 pm after the community restaurant, for a joyous afternoon of songs and laughter. I would like to particularly thank Kay, Elizabeth and Keira who have done everything and more to help getting this project started. As often, things took a little while to get together, but we now have a working formula, and I really hope that this will be a very beneficial group and a great asset to have at the Centre. As Keira said, “singing is healthy, it is good for everyone”, so think of it, join us, and give it a try!!! As this newsletter goes all the way to the end of 2012, this is also the opportunity to wish everyone a happy festive season (very early indeed). The Centre will be opened over the Christmas / New year period, please refer to the diary of event for the exact dates and opening times. The other activities and outings are also listed, keep on eye for your Saturday trips, Terrigal on October 13, Avoca and the Entrance on November 24 or our traditional Christmas Shopping Outing to Leura on December 8, just to name a few… There will also be fantastic lunches, as per usual thanks to Mary, the kitchen fairy, and we are looking already at the Melbourne Cup lunch and the Christmas lunch! Guaranteed success, please remember to book in advance!!! As the Tax season finishes, here is a chance to thank John, our fantastic volunteer, who helped many Seniors this year again with their Tax Return, this center and programs could not run without volunteers, thanks to them all; and should you feel that you also want to contribute to volunteering in Mosman, remember that the volunteer’s office is always open, Liz or Melinda will welcome you, until Ryan comes back on November the 18th! Over the Christmas period, please note that the Centre will close at 3 pm on the 24th and on the 31st of December, and will be closed completely on the 25th and 26th of December and on the 1st of January. We will be opened as per normal on every other day. Finally, remember that we are always ready and willing to help, should you need anything, call Olivier on 9978 4128, and we will do our best to assist you. This is also a very early way to celebrate Seniors over the festive end of the year season, have a great time now that summer is back!

News from the Community Restaurant Well! Who can believe we’re at the end of the year already!! Almost counting down to Christmas. The French and Italian lunches were a great success, with all our favourite European foods! Roseanne Gallo who came and sang so many fabulous Italian songs for us was so much fun. Thank you all for joining in so well!! Your knowledge of Italian songs is unsurpassed! Our good friend, Phillippe, joined us once again, with his accordion for the French lunch and once more, we had a great singalong. Coming up, we have the British Lunch this week. It will be over by the time you read this newsletter! Of course I am providing genuine British fare! That which we all grew up with!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a group of traditional Morris dancers will be joining us!! On Tuesday 6th November is the Melbourne Cup Lunch. As always it’s fun to celebrate this day and watch the race on the big screen together. We will have $1.00 and $2.00 sweeps as usual. Liz and Lyn have volunteered to do this for us on the day!. There will be a Fancy Hat Parade; The categories are Funniest, Most Elegant and Most Original. Start thinking now, what you can do! The Melbourne Cup Lunch starts at1.00pm as the race isn’t until 3.00pm. Bring your friends and have a great day with the rest of Australia! The Staff will all be dressing in their best Race gear, so feel free to “dress your best” as well! The next Lunch after that is, can you believe, Christmas!! This year it will be on Tuesday 18th December, as there will be no lunch on Friday 21st December. The Community Restaurant will reopen on Tuesday 8th January, 2013. I am personally having a big December, with my youngest daughter, Claire getting married on Sat. 8th December. She is having a country wedding on the south coast, just outside Nowra, so it is a very busy time trying to organise that!!! I will have great delight in telling you all about it in the next Newsletter! My two little grand daughters are, of course, flower girls! Speaking of them! Their Mum, Eve, whom a lot of you know has another little baby! This time a boy!! Kurt. So I am having a busy, but happy time at the moment! Many people report that exercising makes them feel more vibrant, energised and confident, fitter and stronger, and able to lead a more functional and independent life. Healthy Lifestyle holds four exercise classes at Mosman Seniors Centre which have been designed specifically for older adults. So come on – dust off the exercise shoes and look and feel terrific for summer. Meals on Wheels Our new summer menu Our new summer menu starts in November. It offers a range of delicious meals for you to choose from, including fish, casseroles, frittatas, pasta, rissoles, roast dinners, salads and vegetarian options. We cater for special diets, such as gluten free. Fresh sandwiches are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Our fresh, refrigerated meals are delivered directly to your home, ready for you to heat in your oven or microwave when required. Frozen meals are also available for your convenience. We are a very flexible service, offering both long and short-term assistance (for example following surgery or a hospital stay). We can deliver once, twice or five times a week, so please give us a call to discuss your requirements.

Take-away If you’re unsure of when you’ll be at home to receive deliveries, why not come to the Meals on Wheels kitchen and collect some frozen meals. Simply bring a cool bag with an ice brick to the Meals on Wheels kitchen between 11am and 1pm and you can choose from our extensive frozen selection.

Christmas Looking ahead over the next few months, the Meals on Wheels office will be closed on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th December and Tuesday 1st January. Our volunteers will not be available to deliver meals on these days but frozen meals may be ordered in advance. From 17th December, we will be offering our delicious Christmas Day dinner (frozen) available for delivery or pick up – roast turkey breast, leg ham, roast potatoes, roast pumpkin, baby beans, gravy and cranberry sauce together with traditional Christmas plum pudding with brandy custard for dessert – all for only $7.00!! Due to the popularity of these Christmas dinners, there is a limit of one meal per person – so be quick!! If you, or someone you know or care for, may benefit from having home-delivered meals, or if you would just like to have a look at our menu, please contact either Katrina or Denise on 9978 4130. WANTED! Family Favourite Recipes

Salmon Rissoles (recipe by Frances Lutge) You will need one 250g tin of pink salmon, potatoes, onions, flour, eggs and bread crumbs. Cook 3 potatoes with an onion, when cooked, add to salmon and add one egg. Mix through with some bread crumbs. Shape into patties, and then roll into plain flour and fry in oil, turn and cook on both sides. Serve with lemon wedges, salad and vegetables. Enjoy!

Getting in and out of cars is so much easier with a swivel seat! Aged and Disability Services office has a swivel seat that can be borrowed to assist with transporting someone in a car. We also have wheelchairs that can be borrowed for two weeks at a time. For Bookings please call Olivier on 99784128.

Community Support, can we help you? As circumstances change in life, gradually you may experience some of the following: a loss of confidence; difficulty in going out, even down the road to the local shops, only to find this is a big effort and you come home exhausted; or you may find it difficult to get to activities you love doing, maybe going to the Art Gallery, your game of Bridge or swimming at Balmoral in the early morning. These changes can come about gradually or suddenly, after a hospitalisation, a fall in the street, the loss of family or good friends – any number of things. Suddenly you are staying home more, becoming more isolated. Look through this list below and see if you answer “YES” to any of these questions: √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √ √

Are you unable to drive or user public transport? Are you experiencing declining health and now feel you need help? Would you like ‘to get out and about’ more often but can no longer manage it? Would you enjoy being picked up and taken on bus trips and outings? Have you had a recent loss, such as the death of a loved one or friend? Do you feel unsafe in your own home or when you go out? Are you in a situation where you have no one to call in an emergency? Would you like more contact with people at times? Would you like to know about local services that can help?

If this is you or someone you know and the answer was “YES” – Can We Assist You? We are not trying to take away your independence, at times there can be that longheld belief that if I accept help that will be the ‘end of me’. Our goal is to keep you independent in your own home, with the offer of a little help, to take away some of the isolation that can come with age and also to reconnect you to your local community. We can assist you in looking at what might help, we can talk through some of the issues and explore possibilities. Social support, neighbourly support and boundaries Our older residents, and often those experiencing social isolation in particular, greatly benefit from the generous assistance of informal care provided by their friends and neighbours. In turn, helpers generally derive great satisfaction from helping out vulnerable members of the community. It is estimated that approximately 18% of informal care to older persons comes from friends and neighbours alone, people often not directly related and non-professionals. The ongoing increase in the proportion of elderly persons, particularly those over the age of 85, has lead to forecasts of increasing demands to provide informal long term care in the future. There is also a concern that the availability of family caregivers has declined over the years. It is therefore anticipated that the level of informal assistance required by older members of our community will continue to increase especially among those without children or relatives living nearby who tend to compensate by developing close relationships with other kin, friends or neighbours. However, caring for an ageing person can be demanding, and aged care services have observed that the burden of care on informal helpers can also lead to difficulties and sensitive issues and – in some cases - prevent the care recipient from receiving the professional care they need. In this respect, while the wider community of locals, friends and neighbours is extremely valuable in keeping an eye on older residents, the traditional help it provides is not always adequate. Picture this scenario, you find your elderly neighbour lying in the hallway of the property, what would you do? Help him to his feet? He might have broken something or have had a heart attack, and you are not a paramedic, how do you evaluate your impact on the situation? In some cases, it might be better to leave this task to professionals who know what they are doing. In some instances, informal help by neighbours and passerbys can actually be detrimental to the situation. Sometimes, doing the wrong thing is worse than simply signaling the problem to the appropriate person or service. Besides, services have witnessed another issue, sometimes; non-professional helpers can feel the effects of long term dependency of an elderly neighbour. Helping an older resident is very important for small everyday issues, but if you are going to do so, bare in mind your own limits and seek appropriate help by professionals when the task is too difficult. Neighbours and friends have often become entangled in a difficult relationship of dependency with people – and can harbour a growing resentment, proportional to the increasing needs of the person – and yet, they are not either delivering the appropriate answer or service to the actual need. All in all, this can lead to a disastrous situation with a “self proclaimed” carer overwhelmed with responsibilities or guilt, whilst the appropriate professional help is not delivered because these social networks of support are informal and not adequate. The message is simple: look after your neighbours and keep an eye on them, help them within reason and without establishing a relationship of dependency, and keep services in mind. Should the situation deteriorate, consult the professionals; and be ready to identify the moment when this informal care you are providing is no longer appropriate. Mosman Carers Group

Caring for Carers

Mosman Carers Group meets weekly, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12 noon in the Harnett Rooms at Mosman Council. The group is an open one, those who attend care for family and friends with illnesses ranging from Dementia/ Alzheimers disease, terminal illness and mental and physical disabilities as well as mental health issues. There are weekly guest speakers and these important and informative sessions cover subjects such as Dementia/ Alzheimers disease , grief and loss, compassion fatigue, legal issues, relaxation and meditation and many, many more. There are monthly support group/get togethers when Carers come together to have chat over a cup of tea and also regular full day bus outings, Carers say they find these outings a wonderful break and valuable respite from their caring role. Feedback from the Carers has been very positive, they say they find the group extremely valuable, appreciating the information, guest speakers and referrals as well as the relaxed and friendly atmosphere ( also the laughter which plays a big part in the meetings! ) and wonderful friendships have formed. A vital part of the group is the friendship and support Carers give one another, they know only too well the highs and lows, frustrations and difficulties of being a Carer and are able to listen and offer advice and understanding. One Carer said that “ I would not have survived without the Carers group” and another said “ I value the group so much, I was never able to open up about my feelings but now find I can speak freely about how I feel, it has been an amazing help.” The weekly meetings are not only valuable for the information and support Carers receive, they also act as respite, a short break or “time out” for Carers, the full day outings are also a well needed, often vital break for Carers. FROM CANADA TO COUNCIL!! When my family and I arrived from Canada two years ago, we were open to adventure, meeting new people, and finding a place that felt like home. I’ll never forget the day we pulled into Mosman Wharf via ferry (still can’t believe this beautiful ride is a form of PUBLIC TRANSPORT!!). We thought to ourselves, WOW…let’s “give it a go”. During my daily jaunts around beautiful Mosman square, I watched the Meals on Wheels volunteers in action, as they busily loaded their “boots” with “eskies” to deliver with a friendly face and kind word. Hmmm…what better way to connect with our new community? Katrina and the Meal’s on Wheels team made me feel welcome. Each week, I looked forward to seeing all sides of Mosman. Learning the back roads, getting used to driving on the left!!! (One of my biggest challenges so far). “Having a chat” with long-term Mosman residents, who often know more about Canada than I do!! I have met wonderful people, with engaging stories to tell. I visit our community’s isolated and frail, and feel buoyed by the services available to support them in their homes. It has been especially nice to involve my 5-year-old son, Arjun in my volunteer work. Where in his wake, he evokes “heaps” of smiles, and ends his jaunt with pockets full of “choccy” treats. So when an opportunity arose to be on the other side of volunteering, working in the volunteer office recruiting folks from all walks of life, with talents to share…well, I was “chuffed”. I believe in volunteering, and think lending our services, talents, & energy should be as fun as a Sunday afternoon “barbie”. At Mosman Council, you will meet a wonderful team of professionals, who care deeply about our growing elderly population. There is a volunteering opportunity to “suit” just about everyone. The Mosman Historical Society is having two evenings of informative entertainment in November. The First – Mr Mark Dunn, a professional historian, will speak on Henri L’Estrange, a well known 19th Century tight-rope walker and balloonist Henri performed a number of wire-walks around Sydney Harbour, including his walk across Sailor’s bay (near the Spit) walking along 1,420 feet of rope 300 feet across the bay, the rope being tied on a tree on either side of the bay. He was also an early balloonist, making a number of flights over Sydney. Venue: Date: Time:

What’s on at Mosman Art Gallery Picasso at the Lapin Agile Thursday 1 November 2012, 7:00PM – 9:00PM Mosman Art Gallery presents a staged reading of legendary funny man Steve Martin’s smash hit play about a fabled meeting between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein in a Paris bar in 1904.

What’s on at Mosman Library Political Animal: The making of Tony Abbott: David Marr at Mosman Library Wednesday 17 October 2012 at 7.00pm A dramatic portrait of a politician by author and investigative journalist David Marr. Tony Abbott is the most successful Opposition leader of the last forty years, but he has never been popular. Now Australians want to know: what kind of man is he, and how would he perform as prime minister? In this dramatic portrait, David Marr shows that as a young Catholic warrior at university, Abbott was already a brutally effective politician. He later led the way in defeating the republic and, as the self-proclaimed ‘political love child’ of John Howard, rose rapidly in the Liberal Party. Broadband for seniors! We have free classes for grand beginners wanting to learn computers and the internet. One of our fantastic volunteer tutors will spend four sessions of 90 minutes with you in a one on one interaction. Learn the basics, how to use the internet, play music and get pictures, and create your own email address over 4 weeks. There is a waiting list, so please register with Olivier on 9978 4128. Knitting Group This group contributes to a charity organisation called Wrap with Love inc. which dispatches quilts and covers to the four corners of the world.
