Climate action Interested residents are invited to participate in a series of workshops to help shape Mosman Council’s Climate Strategy and Action Plan. Three community workshops will cover the topics of mitigation, adaptation and future scenarios. Places for each workshop are limited and bookings are essential. See ‘What’s On’ listings for details, dates and booking links. Council will also host a Climate Action Forum in September with guest speakers and representatives from different levels of government and academia. More information will be available soon at mosman.nsw.gov.au In providing direction for its Climate Strategy and Action Plan, Council resolved at its July meeting to adopt a target of zero net emissions for Council by 2030, and set an aspirational goal of zero net emissions for the Mosman community by 2040. Council will also establish a Climate Action Community Consultative Committee including Councillors, community members and staff in coming months. These actions follow Mosman Council’s declaration of a Climate Emergency in November 2019. Council has also pledged a number of actions to respond to climate change, reduce emissions and improve sustainability as a member of the Cities Power Partnership, Australia’s largest government climate action network.

Mosman Square Seniors Centre is marking a major milestone in August, celebrating a quarter of a century as a service and community hub for residents aged 55+. Opened in August 1995, the centre has grown as a vital social centre for older residents, as well as family members and carers. Today, the centre offers 36 different programs and services, with the help of almost 200 volunteers. In addition to running critical support services for elderly and more vulnerable residents such as Community Transport and Mosman Meals, the centre offers a wide variety of activities that focus on fun, socialising with friends, and health and wellness. They include a community restaurant, art classes, exercise classes, technology workshops, dancing, walking groups, excursions and discussion groups. The centre also acts as Mosman’s hub for a popular annual program for the NSW Seniors Festival. Last year the centre was visited by almost 25,000 older residents, and an average of 2,000 older adults a month. The transport service provided more than 5,000 trips, the centre’s community restaurant served almost 3,500 meals, and Mosman Meals delivered 13,800 meals. The centre has been extensively renovated in recent years to further improve accessibility, amenities and audio-visual tools. The 25th anniversary comes as services and activities progressively resume after a temporary closure, in line with the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions.

As part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improve accessibility and inclusivity around Mosman, a number of key accessibility upgrades have recently been completed or are underway: § New pram ramps have been constructed on Vista Street near Mosman Art Gallery to improve pedestrian access. § Disabled car parking spaces at the southern end of The Esplanade have been resurfaced. § An accessibility ramp has been installed at Clifton Gardens to enable access on to the beach for people with restricted mobility, including wheelchair users. § New accessible amenities at Raglan Street West carpark are nearly completed. The upgrade, partly funded by a NSW Government My Community Project grant, includes family friendly, ambulant and unisex toilets, a drinking water fountain and improved landscaping. The new building will be accompanied by improvements to the adjoining carpark, including resurfacing and kerb and gutter works.

Improving sport facilities Construction of new multi-purpose sports courts at Balmoral Oval is underway. The project includes both a full size acrylic hard court and a practice court suitable for basketball and netball, and upgrades of surrounding landscaping and footpaths. It is anticipated that the courts will be ready for use by the end of September. Council is also renovating the Mosman Swim Centre over the winter months to improve accessibility, safety and general amenity. The concourse will be upgraded, change rooms refurbished and the centre repainted as part of the threemonth project. The works will be completed for the centre’s reopening in Spring.

More information on these and other works is available on Council’s restyled Works and Alerts site. The site provides details of all Council works projects including location map, scheduled dates and upgrades: works.mosman.nsw.gov.au

Remember to recycle One person’s trash may be another person’s treasure, and residents are reminded to recycle unwanted household goods whenever they can to minimise contribution to landfill. Consider alternative solutions such as rehoming items before placing them out for the biannual general household clean-up in August. Council’s household clean-up collection will take mattresses, whitegoods, metal goods, furniture and small appliances. Remember to put mattresses, white/metal goods and non-metal goods into separate piles, so they can be collected separately and recycled. Check waste calendars on the Council website for collection dates. The general household clean up does not accept e-waste, and the free drop-off collection for this is in September. E-waste contains finite resources such as gold, copper and silver, as well as materials that can be environmentally toxic if they end up in landfill, such as lead and mercury. Recycling e-waste means that these materials can instead be recovered and recycled into new products. The e-waste collection will take computers, laptops, monitors, TVs, DVD/CD/VHS media and players, printers, small electrical appliances, mobile phones, game consoles, microwaves, light bulbs, and computer peripherals. For security, it is recommended to wipe data from devices beforehand. See 'What’s On' listing for e-waste collection details and for more information on recycling options visit: mosman.nsw.gov.au/waste
