Recapping The National Year of Reading 2012

Literary Trivia Night

The National Year of Reading 2012 is all about encouraging Australians both young and old to discover and rediscover the joy of reading. Here at Mosman we’ve been celebrating our love of books and literature since February’s successful National Year of Reading launch on Library Lovers Day with numerous events and activities to support this worthwhile campaign.

Fancy yourself a bit of a trivia buff with a penchant for literature? To celebrate the end of the National Year of Reading 2012 Mosman Library is inviting you to a night of literary trivia where you can flaunt your knowledge of books and authors and be in with a chance to win some great prizes. Join a group on the night or gather your friends or book club to form tables of 5 to10. When: Wednesday 28 November 2012 at 6.30pm Where: Mosman Library RSVP: 99784091 Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

So far this year we’ve seen some of our largest author events ever such as Qantas pilot Richard De Crespigny and Australia’s favourite female journalist Ita Buttrose talk to sold out audiences about their personal stories of courage and determination. We’ve run workshops such as ‘The Joy of Story’ which taught parents the importance of reading to children from an early age and seen our Monday Matters lecture program flourish with sessions like ‘Write your own life story’ completely booked out. To raise funds to address growing illiteracy levels in our indigenous community we invited an indigenous storyteller to come along and entertain families with engaging stories of the dreamtime. Patrons donated a gold coin and we managed to raise some much needed money to go towards bridging the literacy gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. Our children’s librarians have also been busy with great school holiday programs such as ‘Seusmania’ two weeks of fun filled Dr Seuss activities followed by an entire program dedicated to the equally loved Roald Dahl. And more recently we saw the entire reference library overtaken with Derek Landy enthusiasts from far and wide who gathered to hear the popular author talk about his bestselling ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ series. Other big names included Morris Gleitzman and Andy Griffiths who were also received by a full house of eager young readers. This is just a snap shot of what has been happening in the library so far this year. The popularity of our events confirms to us that reading is alive and well in Mosman and that despite our busy lives we are still taking time out to enjoy reading for pleasure and encouraging our children to do so as well. 2012 is not over just yet so look out for more great literary events to come…..

In the first series of Mosman Faces ten people told their stories, stories that have shaped the Mosman community. We in Local Studies filmed these stories and launched them as a series of filmed interviews last year complementing them with images from Mosman Library’s Local Studies Collection. This year we added two more ‘Faces’ with stories from Kenneth Dryland and Diane Wachman. Kenneth was director of the inaugural Festival of Mosman in 1981 and continued to direct this major event until 1997 and Diane, too, was an integral and active member of the Festival of Mosman Committee from its beginnings. Their stories go ‘live’ from November 5 so relive the1980’s as the Festival of Mosman put Mosman on the map for arts and entertainment and share your memories of a time that seems just like yesterday.

Monday Matters—Mondays Do Matter

Browsing the EBL eBook collection The EBL fiction collection is growing all the time. There are now 7316 adult and children’s titles in this category – most published in 2011/2012. Although most are in English , there are some in Spanish, French, German and even Afrikaans.

Monday Matters with Speaker Anjel O’Bryant

Back in 2010, a new program of events started in a small way, and has since grown to be a popular and very wellreceived Library innovation. “Monday Matters” is held on the first Monday of each month at 10.30am. It is a presentation by an expert speaker, or speakers, on a wide range of topics.

Some of the best sellers available include Lionel Shriver’s We need to talk about Kevin, Sara Gruen’s Water for elephants and many more. The non-fiction collection, has titles on everything from ‘weddings’ to ‘genomes’, cloud computing’ to ‘global warming’, ’knitting’ to ‘Greek mythology’. The subjects are endless. All of these books can be read on-line or downloaded. Simply request an account via the link on the Library’s website; www.mosman.nsw.gov.au/library

We have had a travel agent who specializes in adventure travel for over 55’s, a colour consultant advising on colours to lift your mood, a feng-shui expert guiding you through home design, even a most inspiring ex Paralympian. The talks are free and attract a small intimate crowd, usually around twenty. So there is plenty of opportunity for questions and informal discussion. The speakers are always happy to stay back and talk to you. The October morning should be a fun event with a number of ‘performance poets’ reciting their favourite pieces. Audience members may even be able to join in the ‘poetry jam’ if they wish. “Monday Matters” finishes for the year in November with a talk by Kate Shayler, author of Burnished : Burnside Life Stories, a unique collection of life stories of kids from homes. Even though the sessions are free, bookings are required. You can book at the Library or online at www.mosman.nsw.gov.au/events.
