From the Editor’s Desk Happy New Year! Dear readers, Welcome back to your Over 55s newsletter and welcome back to your Senior Centre in 2016, happy New Year! It is hard to believe that 2016 is already here. By the time you read these lines, we hope that you would have had a marvellous new year and amazing Christmas festivities, and of course, we would like to wish you and your families, a fantastic New Year! We hope to see you at the Centre in 2016; this year again, we have a comprehensive program of activities to suit all your needs. Physical exercise, balance classes, seminars, leisure activities, educational talks and much much more… Have a look at the end of the newsletter for more details (there is a weekly program on the last page). Why not start to exercise? There is nothing better than New Year’s resolutions! This year again, we will have Tai Chi, Table tennis and Old Time Dance, but also the very good Healthy Lifestyle gentle exercise classes…. And they are also starting Zumba on a more regular basis. The trials we did at the end of 2015 were great and we are hosting this class all year, so that you can decide to join at any time! Zumba is only one of the new activities this year; keep an eye out for our new conversation class, the renewed Computer Pals Program, the English conversation class and many other interesting and inclusive activities. Most importantly, you will find in this newsletter all the services we offer at council. We would like to remind you that direct services from council are only for the local government area, that is Mosman. If you are a local resident, and need help, 2016 will be the year to ask us to give us a call, you can access services; don’t hesitate to call us at any time if you need support. Remember that this year’s Seniors Week will be held between Friday 1st April and Friday 8th April included. We will have many interesting activities and events that week, as well as the now classic cocktail party and Mayoral Lunch. Do not miss out! Before that we hope to see you for the theme lunches at the community restaurant, the Australia Day Lunch is on Friday 29th January, and the Chinese Banquet (year of the Monkey) is on 26th February (remember that for those special lunches, booking in advance is essential)! There are new Saturday outing trips as well, and a lot happening at the Centre. See you all soon!

From the Editor and the Aged and Disability Services team.

News from the Community Restaurant Happy New Year from the Community Restaurant. Hello and welcome to a new year in the Seniors Community Restaurant, I feel 2016 is going to be a fantastic year in the Restaurant and we look forward to seeing you all regularly and hopefully some new faces as well. I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas lunch last year, always our biggest and most popular lunch. It was a very festive day with lots of lovely voices singing along to the Christmas carols with a fantastic performance, as always, by Ben Palumbo and Co. I do hope you enjoyed the day and also had a restful Christmas break with your family and friends. We have a great line-up of Theme Lunches this year. We kick off with the Australia Day Lunch on Friday 29 January 2016. We will start taking bookings for this lunch from our first lunch of the year (Tuesday 5 January). Olivier will come around during the lunches to sell tickets or you may book at the window in the Seniors Lounge. Please note that payment is required when booking. Following on in February will be a lunch to celebrate Chinese New Year, it will be the "Year of the Monkey". The Monkey possesses such character traits as curiosity, mischievousness and cleverness. Forever playful, Monkeys are the masters of practical jokes. If you were born in the following years - 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 you might find you possess some of these traits! In April we will be celebrating Seniors Week, 1 - 10 April. I am sure there will be lots of interesting things happening during this time for you all. I hope you will join us for the annual Seniors "Jazz" Cocktail Party in the beautiful Art Gallery Hall as well as the Mayors' Lunch on Friday 1 April. In the next newsletter I will give you more information about the upcoming Theme Lunches. We are looking forward to celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican feast, Bastille Day with a delicious French banquet and 'Celebrating Rio' with a South American lunch to mark the Olympic Games for 2016. My special thanks must go to our amazingly dedicated Volunteers who give of their time every week to allow the Restaurant to run smoothly. I know you are all very appreciative of them and tell me often what a great job they are doing! If you enjoy the Restaurant, which I am sure you do, please tell others and bring along a friend or two to experience what the Restaurant has to offer. It is important for our older residents to be a part of their community, to make new friends and to remain active. Remember the first meal for a new-comer is complimentary (please be aware that this is limited to local Mosman residents only). 4

I look forward to seeing you all in the new year. Regards Claire.

Meals on Wheels Mosman Meals on Wheels would like to wish everyone a happy 2016! We would also like to say a big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who helped out over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. We were very busy packing and delivering extra meals and, as always, we are very grateful to everyone who offered their help at this hectic time of the year. Once again, our delicious Christmas dinners were hugely popular this year - we were swamped with requests for our roast turkey breast and leg ham dinners and traditional plum puddings with brandy custard! Over summer, our menu offers a choice of high-quality meals each day, as well as fresh salads, sandwiches, soups and desserts. Our fresh, refrigerated meals are delivered directly to your home, ready for you to heat in your oven or microwave when required. Frozen meals are also available for your convenience. Vegetarian, gluten-free and special diets catered for. Not only are our meals fresh and delicious, they also comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Older Australians. Our menu is regularly reviewed by a dietician;      

We provide a wide variety of nutritious foods, from all 5 food groups Our menu offers protein-rich foods every day Unlike many frozen meals from the supermarket, a broad range of vegetables are included Our milk-based desserts, including custard and yoghurt, assist with meeting daily calcium requirements Salt is kept to a minimum in all recipes The majority of our meals are low in saturated fat. 86% of our meals contain less than 10 grams of fat per 100 grams

If you’re unsure of when you’ll be at home to receive deliveries, why not come to the kitchen and purchase some frozen meals. Simply bring a cool bag to the Meals on Wheels kitchen between 11am and 1pm and you can choose from our extensive frozen selection. If you, or someone you know or care for, may benefit from having home-delivered meals, or if you would just like to have a look at our menu, please contact Katrina on 9978 4130 or email meals@mosman.nsw.gov.au We are a very flexible service, offering both long and short-term assistance. Community Support MENTAL HEALTH RESPITE Are you caring for someone who has mental health issues, an intellectual disability or autism? Carers may be family members, parents, partners, friends and neighbours. They provide unpaid care for another person who may have a mental health issue, an intellectual disability or autism. Respite is a break from the responsibility of looking after someone for a few hours, a day, a night or longer. Respite is a way of relieving the stress of being a carer. Research has demonstrated that carers often experience poor physical health, financial difficulties, isolation and their own mental health issues as a direct result of their caring responsibilities. The carers of people with mental illness have different respite and support needs to other carers, due in part to the unpredictability and episodic nature of mental illness. How can The Mental Health Respite Program (MHRP) help you?   

They organise short-term respite, allowing you to have a break while the person you care for is looked after by a trained worker. They provide 24 hour access to their service as well as emergency respite in times where you cannot look after the person that you care for. They can give you information about other services that support you in your caring role and carer support groups. They can provide access to respite cottages or time away. They offer assistance with meeting the cost of respite if required.

MOSMAN CARERS GROUP…. ‘Caring for Carers’

As you may know many people in the community are Carers, they look after friends or family members who have an illness, a disability or a mental illness and therefore may need assistance. Caring may happen on an occasional basis or it may be 24hrs a day seven days per week, there is no one type of caring. What you may not know is that according to the last census there are 130,000 Carers in the northern Sydney region and of these 30,000 provide care 24hours a day, seven days a week. The Mosman Carers Group provides weekly meetings with regular guest speakers and there is a strong focus on "Caring for the Carer" with opportunities to discuss with others the ups and downs associated with the caring role. Caring for someone, no matter how much you love them, can often be exhausting and at times overwhelming, so being able to talk to other people who are in the same position is invaluable. Laughter also plays a big part in the meetings and wonderful friendships have formed. So if you feel that support, information, referrals, understanding and friendship would help make your caring role a little easier, please contact me and I will give you more information about the group.

Warm regards
