Joplin MSW Program
Since 2003, over 100 students have earned their Master of Social Work degree entirely by taking classes in Joplin from Missouri State University. The University is committed to nontraditional graduate students in the Joplin area, offering live and/or blended courses only in the late afternoons and evenings. Several of the courses are also delivered online. Students may be either full-time (if admitted in advanced standing) or part-time. The program emphasis is the Family Health Social Work perspective which allows graduates to work within the micro-, mezzo-, and macro-practice social work fields. The curriculum is infused with clinical, organizational, and advocacy skills. Upon graduation, students can pursue the LMSW and/or the LCSW license. The MSW program consists of 34-62 graduate-level credit hours, depending on the student’s undergraduate major. Students with bachelor’s degrees in social work will likely be able to forego most, if not all, of the foundation classes, resulting in a 34-hour degree program. Each student will complete a professional practicum of 525-975 clock hours within an approved field agency. Fully accredited by CSWE (Council on Social Work Education).

According to the U.S. Department of Labor: Employment for social workers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016, by an increase of 22 percent in the 2006-2016 decade. Job prospects are expected to be favorable, particularly for social workers who specializing in the aging population or in rural areas. Open to Students of Any Undergraduate Major Students who have completed a BSW may be eligible to begin the program in advanced standing and complete the MSW in as little as 34 credit hours, over 3 semesters as full-time students or in 6 semesters as part-time students. Advancedstanding students begin coursework in the summer. Students with any other bachelor’s degree are admitted in regular standing and must take 62 credit hours, completing the program as part-time students within 4 years, beginning the program in a fall semester. ;Regular standing students may take coursework full-time after their first 28 hours, resulting in a three-year program.
The Application Process Admission to the program is competitive. Applicants must complete two applications, one to the Graduate College and a separate application to the School of Social Work. All application materials must be received by the School of Social work no later than 5pm on the last working day of January in order for the candidate to be considered for admission in a given calendar year. Admissions requirements for Regular Standing: • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university • 3.00 GPA overall or in last 60 hours • Undergraduate liberal arts courses (see website or catalog) • At least 3 credit hours of research design or statistics Additional Admissions Requirements for Advanced Standing: • BSW from CSWE-accredited program in the last 7 years • No more than one grade of “C” in professional social work courses All applicants must submit complete transcripts. All application materials must be on file with the School of Social work by 5:00 p.m. on January 31 in order for the candidate to be considered for admission in a given calendar year.
