To reverse what the Anthropocene has lead us into, thousands of Carbon Capture facilities must be built and maintained. The project is set in the near future off the Yangtze River in North East China. A visiting retreat Club House for the Carbon Capture Storage Plant factory workers, in the denatured land of Nanjing. China’s Carbon Emissions are among the highest in the world, and the remote site offers both grounds for building and prime land for storing carbon dioxide in a land who’s air is saturated with CO2 . Factory workers come to enjoy time off from the vigorous work they perform for months on end at the CCSP. The building was designed using a method which examined the aesthetic effect in the space between raster and vector images. In the same way google earth’s satellite images stitch together raster images to create accurate geometry in the earth’s surface, the massing and surfaces of the building are the liminal result of the perceivable difference between raster and vector images turned 3 Dimensional Space. Using Photoshop as a tool to create 2D images that imply spatiality in high resolution raster bitmaps and pulling them into a spatial arrangement. The resultant form and shapes create a type of speculative realism. Walls, floors, roofs, and furniture are perceived as both a flat graphic affect in their gradients and an ambiguous space that melts together its components. Raster images can be shot at resolutions so high they require an extended zoom to reveal pixilation. Technology such as google earth and 3D scanning devices capturing these images make it possible to recreate the built environment as well as the natural in very little time. Architecture must use these technologies to build with the same veracity. It can create a world where the denatured landscape and architecture may not be distinguishable from each other at all.

Located on an abandoned spillway of the Akosmbo Dam, the Balneo Imposition Resort seeks to provide its guests with an experience unlike your prototypical vacation destination. The massive bar structure sits directly atop the industrial site, reconnecting the nearly 400 foot structure to the world’s largest man-made Lake the North and River Volta directly South. Within the 26-story structure guests are accommodated by five different levels of public pools; each with a different theme for which they can indulge in Balneo Therapy. The levels included are Indonesian, Japanese, Turkish, Roman, and the Contemporary roof level featuring a 50 meter infinitypool. The resort is organized using a proportion system both in plan and section, allowing for a modular system for the room units as well as the programmatic scheme. Each public bath level removes a section of the proportion grid, connecting the bath levels with the natural landscape through open terraces. The Balneo Imposition Resort reconnects the people of Ghana and its guests to Lake Volta and River Volta in three ways: • Reactivating the spillway it asserts itself on. • Mimicking the scale of the Akosombo Dam, and • The use of Balneo Therapy and natural water which surround it.

Audubon Recreation and Terrain Center’s form is derived from a series of complex geometries and the resultant spaces between them. Deforming regular shapes so tirelsy that both the original geometry that the series of shapes started as nor the steps taken in transforming them are recognizable. There are three main wings of the building which containing an auditorium, a restaurant and museum space, and finally a training facility that transitions into a visiting artists and athletes residential tower. The complex is positioned to the West end of the existing Audubon Park South of downtown. It connects the park to downtown as an extension of the Scioto Mile that wraps into the pedestrian river walk and onto the accessible roof terrain. Curved edges and twisting geometries frame public terraces while encouragingciatop the green roof. The twisting freeform of the three parts symbolize organic growth found in nature which surrounds it.

Rather than a design that is master planned from the start and then remains static after initial construction, this new proposal for Spatial City was envisioned as a system of design with a specified rule set. By operating in this way, the project can adapt to a multitude of emergent conditions with a specified solution to accommodate the new circumstance. The 1ST RULE of the system was to utilize a modular unit component. Shaped like a honeycomb in plan, this six-sided module fits within a 25’ x 25’ grid with two chamfered edges. Modules can either be set side by side (on one level) or stacked vertically to attain the necessary square footage for larger units with more bedrooms. This allows for the creation of units as small as a 250 SF studio to a 1500 SF 3-bedroom unit. The 2ND RULE determined the development of the section of the building. When moving up a floor, rather than merely stacking the modules like an extrusion, the floor of modules were offset 5’ in either direction. This performs in 3 ways: 1.) It creates difference and identity for each floor of the community. 2.) It produces a visually rich environment through the play of light and shadow. 3.) Different conditions of cover vs. exposure lend varying degrees of publicness and privateness to the outdoor spaces of the units, circulation, and open spaces.

The 3RD RULE introduces a new programmatic component that consists of retail space, community amenities, and outdoor garden space. A 3-D steel grid structure intersects and connects the four fingers of housing on the site. The bars vary in section as they are suspended at different levels and built in varying heights. Part of these bars would be reserved for community amenities. The remaining portion would be left undetermined, open to to entrepreneurs within the community to lease out affordable space and build a micro-economy within the community. The grid-bar scheme is measured in terms of scale; the bars break up the length of the housing fingers, allowing for smaller subset communities to emerge within the project as a whole. The 4TH RULE controls the circulation, connecting the complex together to produce a rich outdoor environment that is both public and private in its experience. The circulation is conceived of as “streets in the sky - wide elevated walkways that are open to light and air. These streets run parallel to the housing units and face inward toward a canyon-like courtyard space.

OVER-THE-RHINE BREWERY 3rd Year - Fall Semester Instructor: Kristy Balliet
37
Cincinnati, OHIO The brewery is designed using a rectangular module that is rotated and scaled down according to its relationship with the central production space. It’s pinwheel plan allows for each corner of the centralized space to branch out and become a smaller more intimate room, contrasting and competing with the main space where the beer is brewed. With an emphasis on the application of masonry, the material chosen coexists with the change in scale theme of the spaces. Standard old brick being the intimate spaces, and a larger stone in the main production room. The building gradually expands from each of the end corners, which bounds a sunken beer garden to the south.

Columbus, OHIO The Gymnasium for Ohio State University is designed around, and with an emphasis on, the figure-8 track which cuts through the building in four instances. An open floor plan allows for views into and through the building whether standing inside or out. The eight foot wide track is an extension of the 2nd floor plate, allowing gym members to venture on and off as they please. Dedicated to the all time great Olympian Jesse Owens, the design encourages students to run and interact using the adjoined open programmed spaces.
