About Me

My name is Motasem Awad. I am currently enrolled in my last year of the Architecture program at St Clair College. Throughout the years within the program I have done many projects that involve both the technical and design aspects of buildings and structures. This program has also made me self-aware to my strengths within this field; I am ambitious and determined, and always staying tuned to new trends and ideas. I have learned to not only apply my knowledge to projects but also use my diverse background to have an open mind, and it also helps being bilingual when communicating. I take great pride in all my work and ideas.

Art Gallery/ Maker Space Third Year, semester 2. St.Clair College

This site is located in Chicago, Illinois, southwest of the navy pier. My design process began by studying Graphic design and how it can relate to architecture. Graphic designers arrange, form, and create images on posters, advertisements, packages, and other printed matter. Offset lithography is a method that is used when an image is printed, which is also known as “halftones, to achieve the halftone pattern my study focused on two different methods. The first method was screen printing, the second method involved me carving out a sketch on a unmounted linoleum sheet then applying paint and stamping it onto another paper.

Carving out molds to create an image then applying paint to transfer the image onto another sheet.

Once transfered it is evident that the picture forms be created a series of halftone circles to create a full image.

Process was repeated with another image.

The perforated metal screen acts as the halftones that are found when printing an image, this also allows for natural sunlight to enter the building naturally. 11 Proof Copy: Not optimized for high quality printing or digital distribution

Super-Hero House Design Third Year, semester 1. St. Clair College

The design concept for the super hero “Plastic-man is to relate the buildings structure to his unique ability to stretch and bend. For the exterior walls, poured concrete was chosen as the best match for this type of structure, due to its ability to follow the path that the building bends in. The red wrap-around the exterior design is also a reference to Plastic mans ability to bend in unique forms.

Through investigating what plasticmans super power was, the first initial thought was to have his home represent him and who he is as a superhero.

Elementary School Design Second Year, semester 2. St. Clair College

For this project we were instructed to design an elementary school. The challenges that were impacting the building was the location; a busy intersection. In result, positioning the building was crucial because of the pedestrian traffic.

The concept for the building is “tree of knowledge, in other words stating that growth is extremely important within the educational system for children.

The reasoning behind separating the JK/SK from the grade 1-8’ is to allow room for growth between different classes and maturities in students.

Lightening Project

Third Year, semester 2. St. Clair College

For this lighting project we were asked to design an interactive lighting object that pedestrians of the living community can interact with while walking through the neighborhood. This design focus’s on how fast the wheels spin when someone is inside the wheel spinning it. The faster the wheel spins, the faster the color changes.

The copper around the wheel is used because it acts as a conductor for the electricity for the lights instead of wires that connect to every single light.

In order for people of the community to feel safe walking in the neighbourhood at night.

This design idea was to help create a safer environment which also acts as a attraction for people and kids to interact with this wheel.

Mixed Use House Design Third Year, semester 1. St. Clair College

My concept for this project was to stitch two struggling communities into one big community where both communities of different income can interact with one another.

The initial step to achieve my design was to move the main street that curves into the neighborhood and have it run continuously straight.

Placing the mixed use buildings in each corner of the site represents the stitches pattern that is being created after "pulling" the street that curves in.
