ello Mum! This year, the month of May sees the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan. Many people use this time to try and be a bit less selfish, think of the needs of others and try and become a better version of themselves. Mothers do this every day. Understanding our children, helping to steer them in the right direction, nurturing and looking after them is something we have in common with all mums.

To this end, this issue contains some articles that are designed to help see some things from your child’s point of view. When your kids are fighting with their siblings, behaving inappropriately, or challenging your rules and boundaries, instead of just viewing their behaviours as disobedient or naughty, there are often some very sound developmental or character reasons behind how the kids are acting. You can read about these in this issue. If you are considering IVF to get pregnant, do read through our article on how to prepare yourself for this treatment. Elsewhere, education plays an important part in this issue, as this is a huge foundation for building our children into the best adults they can be. As ever, we think it is vitally important to just be YOU, as well as a mum! Check out this month’s ‘All About YOU’ section of health and beauty products that are… just for you!

APRIL WIINNER “Hi Kay!
I absolutely loved the April issue of Mother, Baby and Child! I’m a new mum and my son is five months old. It’s time we started introducing solids for him, and I feel more confident about it after reading the issue. My son enjoys the bright, colourful pictures, so we have a good time reading the magazine together! Also, kudos for mentioning the “Etiquette for visiting a new born”. I think all of us need such reminders, as we tend to forget about the comfort of the mother and baby in our eagerness to meet the new born.”

FINE DINING FAMILY IFTAR AT SIGNATURE BY SANJEEV KAPOOR, MELIA DUBAI For a truly special Iftar this Ramadan, try Signature by celebrity Chef, Sanjeev Kapoor, based on the ground floor of Meliá Dubai in Port Rashid. As you would expect from a chef who is at the top of his game, the menu is an intelligent blend of Arabic and Indian classic – the latter of which takes you on culinary journey around India. The fine dining plating of the set menu provides a real respect for the importance of Iftar and is perfectly tailored to palates that appreciate sophisticated Arab and Indian cuisines. The menu is clever because it manages to seamlessle tie together a very ‘perfumed’ and fragrant Arab cuisine with one that is characterised by bolder spicing. It is a tricky balance, superbly executed!. Every day from sunset to midnight. AED 179 per person. A la carte is also available. For further information: or

DEALING WITH SIBLING RIVALRY
It is easy to forget that once the summer holidays start, your kids are in more contact with each other…which can often mean lots of fighting and sibling rivalry. Sound familiar? Then read on!
Y
ou know that feeling of hearing fighting and shouting from the next room? This is usually how it goes: “Mum! She pushed me for no reason!!” “No I didn’t - he took my pens!” “You liar! I only took my pen. She’s stupid!” “No I’m not! You’re an idiot!” “You’re an idiot!” “Mum – she just pushed me again and I didn’t even do anything!” This is an all-too familiar scenario during the holidays, and it is a real test of parenting to turn this time into one with more peace and tranquility instead of one filled with sibling in-fighting between the kids.
24 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
MYTHS ABOUT SIBLING RIVALRY
Sibling relationships are complex, but there are still a few myths that exist about rivalry and fighting: • Siblings should not fight with each other • Siblings should know how to play fairly • Siblings should act lovingly toward each other • Siblings should be able to manage their anger toward one another If you believe the above, then your frustration, irritation and stress levels can be intense.
FACT: Siblings Will Fight
It is a difficult and hard aspect of parenting to realise that sibling rivalry is unavoidable. However, it makes sense if
• The stage of development of each child • The order of birth • Your family culture and expectations. For example, young children who are close in age often bicker more and require more supervision than older siblings. In addition, your expectations are shaped by your experiences and the messages you were given about your relationship with your siblings when you were growing up.
PREVENTION IS THE KEY
Although a certain amount of sibling rivalry is to be expected, there are things you can do to reduce and minimise the frequency of conflicts. These actions include: • Avoid comparing your children with each other
“
arrange a
special time or outing
alone with eachm child.
• Give your time in terms of need. At times, your older child may need your help with homework more than the youngest needs you to watch them do cartwheels; at other times, the youngest may need time and attention when she falls down while playing • Teach children to be assertive with words so they don’t rely on you to rescue them. Of course, keep your eyes and ears open in case things escalate and you need to intervene you think about it from the perspective of your kids. They are forced to live together, expected to get along just because they are related, and to share almost everything, including the things that mean the most to them – which is you, their mother. Your children crave your attention and your time, and when fights break out, they also desperately want you to take their side. That can be really hard to do, especially when you have two or more children each crying out for you to acknowledge that injustice has been done to them and protect them and their position.
Other Factors
As if this wasn’t enough, there are other factors that affect how the fights and arguments play out, which include: • Gender • Differences in age • Character of the children
• Be a positive role model by using healthy communication to resolve conflict • Plan a daily routine with time apart and give each child his or her own space • Help kids structure their time and discover ways to be active and focused. Kids who have too much time on their hands, or ones who get bored easily, often fill in time by being a nuisance or starting a fight with their siblings. • When possible, arrange a special time or outing alone with each child (a walk, a visit to the park or out shopping). Kids can learn to accept their sibling’s getting time with you if they know they will also get their turn at time with you. • Regularly observe your kids interacting with each other to see if there is a pattern of conflict. For example, is there a particular time of day when struggles erupt, or is there a special toy over which your children consistently battle, or do arguments break out when one of your children has a friend visiting? parenting With this knowledge, you may be able to rearrange things to prevent the fighting before.
THE UPSIDE OF SIBLING RIVALRY
The sibling relationship has a powerful influence over a child’s development and their bickering can even be healthy for children as long as no one is getting hurt. The benefits your children can gain from their rivalry and fighting include: • Learning negotiation skills and how to compromise • Becoming more resilient after weathering the battles • Learning to assert themselves • Discovering ways to defend themselves • Learn about their feelings and that of others
This knowledge will provide life and coping skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
THE PARENTS’ RULES OF ENGAGEMENT TO MAKE PEACE Ignore the small bickering
Counter-intuitive as it may sound as a parent, one helpful way you can make peace with the petty fighting is simply to ignore it. Understand that, for the most part, when your children are arguing, they do not actually require your help in settling the dispute. Unfortunately, bickering is extremely hard to ignore. It could be the tone of voice or the pitch that just gets under your skin and pushes you to storm into the middle of an argument and call a halt to it. It is surprising how many of those little disagreements go on during the day and how many do just fizzle out on their own if you can just stay out of it. So, the next time the kids squabble, imagine relaxing on a sunny beach instead of actually heading into the battle. View your children’s conflict as an opportunity for them to grow and change! 26 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
You can’t ignore it when someone is getting hurt
When the fighting goes beyond bickering, when the words get a little too hurtful, or physical force is being used, remember it’s all in your approach. If someone has been hurt, attend to the hurt child first; don’t give the aggressing child more attention, thereby reinforcing their behaviour.
Teach how to fight fairly and assertively
Instead of punishing your children for fighting, you can use their disagreements to teach them how to fight fairly. When your child expresses negative feelings about a sibling, listen to and acknowledge
“

fight fairly.
“
• Understanding when they have gone too far
Don’t take sides
If you have to step into a fight, don’t take sides and don’t ask who started it. These two actions get you nowhere, except more involved in an unhelpful way to the situation. It helps to take a more neutral stance and simply acknowledge what you see. ‘You two are really having a rough time in here.’ Instead of finding out how a fight got started, concentrate on how to work it out.
Assess the situation
Take a moment to assess the situation and ask yourself, ‘What do my children need to learn here?’ Do they need to be reminded of the rules or help finding more respectful words to express how they are feeling? For example, instead of name-calling, you could teach your children to say, ‘I don’t like it when you change the TV channel in the middle of my show,’ which sounds much better than, ‘You stupid idiot.’
Teach the skill of problem exploration
Teach your children how to explore a problem so that they can work towards a solution. • Start by describing the problem, • Identify each person’s point of view • Then brainstorm options for solving it The nice thing about teaching this skill is that as your children get older, you will be able to trust in their ability to resolve conflicts without your help. What an empowering message you send when you say you believe they can work it out! his feelings instead of dismissing them. For example, you can say: ‘I know your sister is annoying you.’
Again, learning to manage his or her anger is a skill that will come in handy throughout his life.
Give your child a way to express strong feelings safely by encouraging her to talk, draw, or write. Once he is calmed down, you can teach him how to vent his anger in non-hurtful ways, how to stand up for himself, and how to problem solve.
ESTABLISH RULES ABOUT HOW THE KIDS TREAT EACH OTHER
You can also teach her other ways to manage her angry feelings. For example, you can try doing things like the following with them: • Exercise – do jumping jacks, shoot hoops, run • Take deep breaths • Drink cold water • Blow bubbles
Set rules in your family
And make sure everyone knows them! For example, set rules about name-calling and hitting, and explain why those rules are in place. Think about what rules can be made around the issues of personal property and respect for each other. Ideally, these rules will be made ahead of time during a moment of calm, like at a family meeting, rather than in the heat of the moment.
Separate children when safety is at risk
And most importantly, when you feel safety is being jeopardized, separate the children. First and foremost, your job as a parent is to keep your children safe, even if that means protecting them from each other. Once you have done that, you can go back to explore the problem and find healthier options for handling their anger.
Finally… Okay, so it is now the beginning of the school summer holidays. Maybe it won’t be so bad after all. If you are lucky, your children will give you many opportunities to embrace the challenges of their sibling rivalry and allow you to help them to learn and grow from them. THE RULES ABOUT RULES Children need and value rules, but as a natural part of their development, they try to rebel against these boundaries. So what are the rules about rules?!
Y
ou’ve set the rules in your home and feel good about clearly communicating your expectations and establishing a sense of order and direction in your children’s lives. Having set the boundaries, you might think you can now expect your children incorporate your values and use the rules to guide their behaviour. But the reality is that parents will often hear their children kick-back at the rules. Do any of the following sound familiar: • ‘But why do I have to do it? In Mazen’s house, he doesn’t have to do that – none of my friends do!’ • ‘I know my homework is due tomorrow, but I want to finish this game first…’
Some degree of resistance is completely normal when children come up against rules. The truth is that stating your expectations of them is often only the first step in actually getting your children to live by the rules at home.
WHY CHILDREN RESIST FOLLOWING THE RULES As a parent, you might wonder how many times you have to tell your children the rules, why it takes so much effort to enforce them, and why children don’t just obey the rules that you set. Part of the reason has to do with the very nature of children – they are impulsive, impetuous and therefore they often can’t stop themselves from doing what they want to do. Your children’s temperament also plays a role in how much, how often 28 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

• ‘I’m not even tired, so there is no point in going to bed yet.’
and deliberately.
and with what intensity they protest against the rules. A very persistent, intense and expressive child may resist longer and louder than a child who is more compliant, milder and reserved.
SEE THE POSITIVES IN THEIR OPPOSITION
Even though their objections and arguments can annoy to you, your children may be practicing important skills that will benefit them as they mature. They are learning to: • Question how and why things should work • Assert themselves • Express their opinions • Defend their positions • Negotiate • Oppose what they consider to be unfair. As much as you may want them to be obedient in the immediate term, most parents want to raise children who can stand up for their beliefs and rights and fight injustice as adults – and questioning/ opposing your rules is a natural part of achieving this.
RULES HELP CHILDREN FEEL TO SECURE
In addition, children frequently test the blurred lines around some rules to find out what the ‘real’ limits are; their opposition to your rules can be a way for them to feel secure in their world and be assured that there are firm boundaries established that will protect them, often from their own impulses.
Holding Your Ground Your children’s opposition to your rules can take many forms: • Arguing • Debating / Trying to Negotiate • Yelling / Crying / Tantrums • Procrastinating or Ignoring • Rudeness / Insolence. Remember that as the parent who is ultimately in charge, you have the right and the responsibility to be treated with respect, even when your children disagree with you. Assuming that a particular rule is one that you stand by, then how can you manage your children’s objections?
TOOLS TO HELP YOU UPHOLD THE RULES
Be confident in your decisions. Just because your children are not happy with a rule, it does not mean you need to alter it. Give short explanations. In the heat of the moment, your children aren’t able to hear all of your words. When they are calm enough to listen, you can give a longer explanation. Respect the child’s point of view. Listen for a brief while. You can hear that they think the rule is stupid, unfair and so on and then still insist that the rule be obeyed. Stay focused on the issue at hand. Don’t allow yourself to be taken off track. Bring the conversation back to the rule and keep repeating the request. Use non-verbal communication. Make direct eye contact, speak and move slowly and deliberately. All of these tools can be used in a calm way that communicates respect and love for your children, as well as determination and a willingness to be the one in-charge in your home – the parent.
FLEXIBILITY IS KEY
From time to time, you may need to
revisit the rules you have established to check that they are still appropriate for your family. Your children may need more freedom as they grow and mature, such as giving a teen more of a say over their bedtime. At other times, the rules may need to be more stringent when you see that your children are not managing the freedom your rules have allowed them, such as giving a tween less or no computer time if she cannot limit her use of social media sites.
EXPECT SOME RESISTANCE
Actually expecting to receive some complaints and opposition to your rules can often ease your anxieties and frustrations. It is in children’s nature to test the limits. It can also be reassuring to know that to some degree these episodes of disagreement and objections can enhance your children’s growth toward maturity as they struggle to incorporate your values. However, when you have determined that the rule must be followed, it becomes an important part of your job as a parent to enforce the rule and to help your children learn to live by it. FOOD LESSONS FOR LIFE
Isla Gray, Food Preparation & Nutrition Teacher at Kings’ School Al Barsha, talks about the importance of nutritional education and its place in the curriculum and school community.
A
committed advocate for the future of domestic sciences in schools, and with Kings’ School Al Barsha just one of a handful of UAE secondary schools that has a food technology department, for Isla Gray, Food Preparation & Nutrition Teacher, it is “extremely important that nutrition and healthy eating is embedded in the curriculum for all children.” At Kings’ Al Barsha, this starts from KS3 and follows the design and technology framework of the National Curriculum for England, which stipulates that ‘all KS3 pupils are required to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook’ with each school year building on healthy eating messages and nutrition basics, to develop knowledge and skills. 32 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
NUTRITIONAL INITIATIVES Kings’ School Al Barsha is also active when it comes to implementing nutrition or healthy eating-centric initiatives, as Gray explains: “The food technology facilities are also used by Mozart, our additional needs department, as well as some primary classes. Enterprise links including the primaries’ ‘grow your own’ have also made use of our food technology facilities. It’s great that these students get to develop their knowledge around food in a practical, fun and engaging manner.” She also runs the Tasty TV extracurricular activity, where students with a keen interest in food can come along, make a dish and are filmed. “These clips are useful teaching and learning tools in a ‘flipped learning’ environment. The
students love the entire experience and viewing themselves in action.” she says. Previous success with a school-wide Healthy Eating Week is another initiative that Gray is keen to run for the next academic year. With Ramadan on the horizon, the school has special provisions in place for those children who will be fasting, as she explains: “In the classroom environment, we are very mindful of the restrictions in place for fasting students. “I feel that coming to food technology during this period is a great platform to learn about nutrition and ensure that students, who are in a position to pass on the knowledge on to their families, can ensure they are continuing to consume the right foods with the balance of nutrients required.”
VICTORIA BROWNE, SCHOOL NURSE, KINGS’ SCHOOL NAD AL SHEBA, WEIGHS IN ON THE HEALTHY EATING FOCUS AT HER SCHOOL… At what age should you start introducing a child to the concept of nutrition? It is important to introduce the concept of healthy eating to children as early as possible, and equally important to support parents. At Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba we introduce this from FS1 and it continues to play an important part of their learning through to year six. We tailor the way we talk about nutrition to different year groups - for example, in FS we have introduced the idea of eating a rainbow, and in primary we talk about eating from different food groups. We also have healthy eating displays in all our dining halls. How can parents get hands-on with nutrition in the home? Make easy child-friendly meals at home together by following simple recipes. Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba publishes easy-to-make healthy recipes in its Geronimo newsletter, but there is a wealth of recipes available online. Sit down with your child when you are meal planning at the beginning of the week and get them involved. Discuss what you will be eating for the week ahead and make sure you do so with a focus on healthy ingredients and preparation. The importance of reinforcing these messages from an early age cannot be understated. With your guidance, let them input their own ideas into the family meals for the week. Give your child a task during meal times. If they are not old enough to help prepare
food or cook, get them to help create a menu, lay the table or serve the meal. This enables them to be engaged and part of the process. This also reinforces another healthy habit around food - the huge value of sitting down together as a family at mealtimes. What kind of in-school initiatives have been successful at Kings’ Nad Al Sheba? • Healthy Eating Certificates for those eating healthy lunches. Children who receive the most certificates each month become ‘Healthy Eating Champions’ and appear on our wall of fame. We have also introduced rainbow charts for the FS children to document when they eat a rainbow, earning them a certificate • We include a healthy recipe in every edition of our Geronimo newsletter. • We are taking advantage of our stateof-the-art STEAM facility to offer more practical lessons to show children how to prepare healthy food. Our FS1 children recently made their own wholemeal bread rolls and FS2 made guacamole and sushi, while Year Six carried out experiments on how lifestyle choices can affect our bodies. • We carry out health promotion assemblies, covering topics from healthy eating to healthy living. • Our PE department has been getting children to follow Joe Wicks’ School Workouts and, in November 2017, the entire school also participated in the Dubai 30x30 Challenge. THE TRUTH ABOUT ‘GIFTED’ CHILDREN When a child is described as ‘gifted’ you probably think of a high-achieving student who is well-behaved, top of the class in tests, and achieves straight A’s in their school reports. However, the reality can be very different.
You might also picture the kind of student sometimes referred to as a ‘geek’ – the kid whose nose is usually buried in a book or who can be frequently found in front of his computer writing code from an early age. In short, the common misconception is that these are the children for whom school is easy, who are bright enough to find their way in the world without much help, and who have everything going for them, right? Wrong!
THE REALITY OF BEING A GIFTED CHILD At School While it’s true that the above descriptions may fit some intellectually gifted children, you might be surprised to learn that this is not an accurate description for many others who also qualify as gifted, nor do they capture the unseen social and emotional struggles so many of these children face. Students are traditionally identified as gifted when they perform significantly above the level of their class peers in one or more academic subjects and, occasionally, parents and teachers may include artisticallyadvanced students in this category as well. However, we rarely recognise that children can also be gifted in other areas (including verbal, interpersonal and kinesthetic), or that many of these children endure significant emotional challenges on a daily basis, both at home and at school. At Home If you ask a parent of a gifted child to describe their son or daughter, they may often use the word ‘intense,’ among other adjectives. In their book ‘Living With Intensity ,’ authors Susan 34 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Daniels and Michael Piechowski describe gifted children as follows: “As gifted children take in information from the world around them, they react and respond more quickly and intensely than other children. Because they can be so greatly stimulated, and because they perceive and process things differently, gifted children are often misunderstood.” In short, our views of what it means to be a ‘gifted child’ have been limited and often inaccurate, ignoring the emotional aspects of the child’s personality and development. Given what recent research is telling us, we need to update our understanding of gifted children and the challenges they face if we want to ensure that these children have the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential.
GIFTED CHILDREN AND OVER-EXCITABILITY Understanding Over-excitability What does “overexcitabilty” mean? This can be defined as “an innate tendency to respond in an intensified manner to various forms of stimuli, both external and internal.” In other words, it’s as if a person’s internal receptivity and response meters have been set on ‘high’ without any additional filters. Researchers who study and work with gifted children (and adults) describe five common forms of over-excitability in the gifted people. If you are a parent with a high-energy, sensitive child who has not yet been identified as gifted, you may recognise your child within the descriptions of these five common types of over-excitabilities.’ • Psychomotor: they have a huge amount of physical energy and restlessness • Sensual: they have strong senses of smell, touch, taste; sensitivity to light or loud noises • Intellectual: they are driven by ideas and desire for knowledge • Imaginational: your child has an enhanced capacity for visualisation, invention and fantasy
“
many children endure
• Emotional: the child has a wider-than-average range of feelings, from high ‘highs’ to low ‘lows’
significant emotional challenges both at home & at school.
“
Understanding the types of emotional intensity most frequently experienced by gifted children is the first step in enabling parents who live with gifted children to more effectively support their emotional development and advocate for them at school and in other environments.
Psychomotor over-excitability A gifted child who has trouble sitting still, who talks a lot or speaks rapidly, or who develops nervous habits, such as nail biting or tics, may be demonstrating ‘psychomotor over-excitability’. These kids have extra energy that needs to be released through physical action, which means they are vulnerable to a misdiagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), given that these behaviours can look quite similar. For parents of children in this situation, it is important to find a clinical professional who understands the differences and can provide an accurate diagnosis. Sensual over-excitability Children with sensual over-excitability experience the world around them more intensely than other children. Colours are richer, smells are stronger and tastes are more distinct. These children are often picky eaters well beyond the age of their peers, and MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MAY 2018 | 35
education can be easily over-stimulated by loud or very bright environments – they just don’t have as strong a filter as others do. The sense of pleasure they get from touching soft or interesting fabrics and textures is also heightened, so they may hold on to a favourite stuffed animal or baby blanket well beyond the ‘normal’ age, even into their teens.
In the classroom and at home, their questions and comments can be perceived as oppositional or challenging of authority, so it is essential for both parents and teachers to understand the true motivation of these children.
“
Imaginational over-excitability Imaginational over-excitability often manifests in the creation of imaginary companions or in the child’s tendency to fantasise or make up stories. These children are frequently described as ‘dreamers’ or as ‘living in their own world,’ and are usually highly creative in at least one artistic domain. Boredom is something for which they have a low tolerance – they are driven to experience new and interesting things all the time. Emotional over-excitability Sensual and emotional over-excitability often occur together. Emotionally overexcited kids experience intense feelings, both positive and negative. Parents who live with children like this often describe their days as ‘emotional roller coaster rides’ and watch their child move from one strong, complex emotion to another. These children have difficulty hiding their emotions, even when they try. As one boy describes it, “my feelings just come bursting out” whether he’s excited and proud, or whether he’s anxious and afraid. Supporting emotionally over-excitable children requires a high level of patience and understanding from parents, who may need support themselves, during particularly challenging days.
36 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Gifted children often feel absence of proper
guidance
from adults around them.
“
Intellectual over-excitability Finally, intellectual over-excitability is the type of giftedness that we are most familiar with. Intellectually-motivated children are curious, focused and expert problem solvers. They love reading about new theories, discovering different ideas, asking questions, and have a general ‘thirst for knowledge.’
HOW THE FIVE OVEREXCITABILITIES WORK TOGETHER
It is important to note that a gifted child may not exhibit sensitivities in each of these five areas – they may demonstrate over-excitability in only one or two, which can make it difficult to identify.
Identification is made even more challenging when a child is both gifted and learning disabled (with dyslexia, for example), or gifted and disabled in some other way (such as autism or depression). These children are often referred to as ‘twice exceptional’ and you need knowledgeable professionals who can provide accurate diagnoses, along with suggestions and strategies for how the child might use their strengths to compensate for their challenges.
SUPPORTING GIFTED CHILDREN Gifted children, even very young ones, frequently feel different or embarrassed, especially when adults and other children don’t know how to respond to their high energy, persistent questions and strong emotions. Contrary to the common perception of ‘having it easy’, gifted children often struggle, and feel anxious and alone in the absence of proper guidance and encouragement from the adults around them. Fortunately, there are some excellent resources available in the UAE to help parents recognise and appreciate their children’s gifts and to support parents in raising their children and assisting them in developing to their full intellectual and emotional potential. See the MotherBabyChild.com website for further information.

ASK THE EXPERT What motivated you to become a teacher? I was lucky to experience school life in four very different countries - England, America, the Czech Republic and Canada. However, there was one teacher that stood out and gave me a love of learning that has stayed with me ever since. I believe every child deserves to have someone that believes in them, nurtures and supports them and felt that I could give this back to the next generation. Who was the teacher that inspired you the most when you were a student? Why?
A M I N A H E VA N S
She is Head of Foundation Stage (Starting Academic Year 2018-19)

My primary school teacher, Mr Feintuck. He made learning seem easy and effortless and gave me the confidence that I could do anything if I just tried. He linked the topics of the curriculum into my interests and that really engaged me to want to learn more outside of school to increase my knowledge and capabilities within the classroom. My mum still sees him at our local shop and he always asks after me! This really means a great deal. How is teaching in the UAE different from your home country? The main difference for me is the use of the outside space during the hotter months in Dubai. Being outdoors offers opportunities for doing things in different ways and on a larger scale. Children can explore the natural world around them using all their senses. How do you organise your classroom? I create a room full of imagination which is linked to the children interests. At the start of a topic I speak with the children and parents to find out what they know already and what they would like to find out. This makes my planning come alive in the room which engages all the

children. I like to use soft natural colours and woods to give a calm feel and ensure the indoor space flows into the outdoor environment as a continuous learning space. I also have cosy reading nooks in the room for the children to enjoy sharing books together. All resources are at the children’s level and they independently self-select what they want to explore. What do you think is the greatest challenge facing students today? Some children are lacking in resilience to assess their own skills and manage risks in their own environments. I have seen an vincrease in children either giving up when trying something new or not having the confidence to take risks, even if they don’t succeed on the first attempt. As parents, we want to protect our children, but we need to have a balance so that children can explore and find their own limits. How do you deal with those children who learn most effectively in a nontraditional way? As a teacher my main role is to engage the children to learn successfully. Part of this is to establish their preferred learning style through my observations in the classroom. I find that the majority of children in the early years are kinaesthetic learners – they learn with their senses through exploratory play. As they get older, some children prefer drawings on the board as they are visual learners, whilst others benefit with a verbal explanation of a concept instead, as they are auditory learners. When I teach, I ensure that I meet all the learning needs of the children by offering a range of activities with the same learning outcomes for the children to independently select. Successes,
What do you tell your incoming students in their first back-to-school class at the start of each year? As a class we create our own ‘recipe to success.’ The children then sign their name/ hand print to acknowledge that they have created this and will follow the recipe to help them to succeed throughout the year. For example, you will need in Reception: • 2 cups of effort
• 1 cup of team workv
• 2 cups of kindness
• 4 cups of excitement to learn
• 2 handfuls of curiosity
• 1 handful of resilience
• 3 tablespoons of honesty
• Sprinkle of pride in your work
Method: Combine all ingredients with a helpful hand and a loving heart. What is your greatest memory as a teacher? This was seeing the wonder in the children’s eyes when we found a dinosaur egg in the classroom! We went on a dinosaur hunt around the school grounds looking for clues, did some research about dinosaurs and made nests outside for the egg. The children’s natural imagination and curiosity led the learning, which in turn covered all areas of the curriculum. The children continued the learning at home to research about other eggs and what they needed to survive. We ended by performing a ‘Dino Show’ for the parents, which showcased all their learning.

effective learning within the EYFS curriculum is active learning. This is woven into all seven areas of learning and development. The children need to be involved in the planning process for each topic, as this leads to increased engagement because they are interested in the activity. I set challenges in each area of provision for the class each day, this teaches the children to keep trying and builds their resilience to succeed. WHAT DOES A
PROGRESSIVE CLASSROOM LOOK LIKE?
By Emily Bautista, K1 and Victoria Monaco, K2, Clarion School classroom teachers.
P
rogressive educators are often asked, how is a progressive classroom different from a nonprogressive classroom? And the answer lies partially in how it looks! This may seem surprising, as a classroom is a classroom, right? All elementary classrooms have books, art and other work hanging on the walls, and of course, students. But let’s take a closer look! Progressive classrooms not only look different, they feel different and it all starts off with a lot of empty walls. Most 40 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
progressive classrooms don’t have the usual pre-made colorful banners, borders, charts or lettering that you see in a typical classroom. Children’s works are always the center of attraction and are thoughtfully displayed to show what the class has been learning at school. Yes, there are books, but there are also books that the children have written themselves, either as a class or individually. Artwork hanging on the walls? Most definitely, but it’s much more free-form. The students aren’t asked to replicate
certain objects. They are given the freedom of creating for themselves. Painting starts with just primary colors and a blank piece of paper. Children learn to mix the colours themselves and when they discover all on their own that blue and red make purple, the pure joy on their faces shows you just how proud they are of themselves. Class work hanging up on the walls? Everywhere - and not just on the walls, in the hallways, outside at the workbench and in the block area! Students showcase
POWERED BY:
their work in all types of ways. There may be a parking lot of cars made out of large boxes in the hallway waiting for a pretend drive-in movie to start. Or perhaps there is a model of how water moves from the reservoir to the school made of plastic bottles. There may also be homemade play dough in a play centre that the students made or a ginormous block city with a ‘SAVE’ sign on it. Every work from every child is valuable because it shows their learning journey – the progression of the way they think and understand their work. Progressive teachers use these works to have conversations with their students about what they are working on as a form of authentic learning assessment. Without this work everywhere, a progressive teacher is not able to have proper conversations with their students about what they are working on and therefore cannot fully understand what the students are processing. But the biggest difference in a progressive classroom is the students! Progressive learning lets the children explore, play, discover and learn. Every day, students set goals for themselves and they find ways to achieve these goals
either by doing it themselves or with help from a friend or teacher. They build on what they know and they are ready to make mistakes, solve problems, try again, help each other and be proud of what they can do.
because students are encouraged to take charge of their own learning. They learn how to ask questions, connect ideas, share their thinking in different ways and celebrate their learning, as well as that of their classmates.
Students learn how to learn. Progressive classrooms cultivate a love for learning
Language is also different in a progressive classroom. In the hallway, you will hear teachers say: “Walking feet!” instead of “No running!” or: “Gentle hands,” instead of “No hitting or no pushing.” In this way, positive behavior is emphasised, highlighting what students ‘should do’ instead of what they ‘shouldn’t do.’ You will hear teachers and children call each other by the group term “friends” rather than “boys and girls” or “guys,” to treat both genders equally and continue the gentle theme. Most importantly, progressive education teaches students how to be social beings - and this begins as soon as they walk into the classroom. Students are given time to greet their classmates and teachers in the morning, which is followed by a morning meeting. They learn through conversations and sharing ideas with each other. A progressive classroom teaches each student that they belong to community, are respected and that they are part of bigger world. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MAY 2018 | 41

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD SOCIAL PAGES:
DUBAI MUMS OUT IN FORCE FOR MIRDIF’S NEW OKAIDI OBAIBI STORE
O
kaidi Obaibi, relaunched its Mirdif City Centre - Dubai store yesterday with a fun event, organised by Mother, Baby & Child. Local mums came along and were treated to photoshoots with their little ones before listening to a lively presentation about the importance to their children’s future of making environmentally-friendly fashionable clothing choices. Not forgetting their own vitality and wellbeing, mums were then given their own questions and answers session with acclaimed pre- and post-natal exercise specialist, Reem Ghussein of women’s fitness experts, Fit Squad DXB. After a just-for-fun prize draw, the Dubai mums browsed the cute and trendy clothes in-store, treating their little ones to Europe’s favourite high-quality baby brands at their mum-friendly prices. Environmentally-friendly clothing choices in Dubai Since its inception in Europe in 1996, the Okaidi brand ethos has been: “for every child to be happy, responsible and take charge of their future.” The brand acknowledges that, as

your children grow, they want to help choose their own clothes. By operating to social, societal and environmentally-responsible clothing production methods, it means the range can empower today’s children to live a life where they are making environmentallyfriendly choices as a normal part of their growing up. This in itself has a massive impact on our environmental future, especially since the store has 1,034 branches in 63 countries and is still expanding. The Obaibi brand credo is: “helping parents and their children to grow with peace of mind.” By sourcing 100% organic cotton and upholding their social and environmental responsibilities to our children’s future, the brands offer Dubai’s mums the opportunity to raise happy, fashionable, confident kids who are playing a part in their own future by making sustainable choices. And that means a lot of kids, making responsible choices! The first of the special ranges for Ramadan are now appearing in the Okaidi Obaibi Mirdif City Centre store, providing the perfect choices for both gifting and indulging your own 0-14s.

LEADING DUBAI PRE- AND POST-NATAL FITNESS EXPERT ANSWERS QUESTIONS FROM MUMS Dubai’s pre- and post-natal fitness expert, Reem Ghussein from fitness training firm, Fit Squad DXB, answered questions from Dubai mums at the Okaidi Obaibi store relaunch event in Dubai’s Mirdif City Centre yesterday. Fit and toned Reem drew a collective gasp of disbelief from the young mums at the event as she revealed that she is herself a mother of three children. She explained to the mums that the births of her second and third children were made so much easier by exercising throughout her pregnancy, with a much quicker physical recovery afterwards. “I exercised in the gym right up until the ninth month of my pregnancy and each time, I got comments from people asking: ‘is it safe to exercise in pregnancy?’ My response is ‘of course it is!’ My advice is for mums to talk to their doctor first to make sure there is no medical reason that should prevent you, and also listen to your body.” The Fit Squad DXB ‘mummy trainer’ specialist also explained that discomforts in pregnancy such as backache can often be relieved by strengthening the back muscles, thereby providing more
natural support. “As a specialist trainer for women both during and after their pregnancies, I work gently and carefully to help women feel as comfortable as possible, and I know from my own experience that it makes a massive difference.” When asked how busy mums can make the time for a structured exercise programme, Reem said: “I have three young children and I am always running around after them – and any mum knows that this is tiring! But I wake up early and do a workout before they start their day and that is the one thing I credit for giving me the energy for every day.
As a mother, you need to keep yourself healthy, well and energised. You have to make a little bit of time for you – and when you do this, the whole family benefits as well as you. You have more energy for your kids, you are naturally calmer and less stressed because you have flooded yourself with the body’s ‘feel-good’ chemicals; you tend to make healthy food choices for the family and pass on great habits to your children. Just making that 2-3 hours a week is absolutely a win-win – and you feel amazing too!” For further reading and information: visit www.fitsquaddxb.com or call +971 52 870 6369 MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MAY 2018 | 47

FILTERED WATER
– THE LIQUID OF LIFE We asked Dubai-based Liquid of Life to explain more about filtered water and its benefits – and also dispel a few myths about it!

that are small enough to be ingested. The review comes after US journalism organisation Orb Media found plastic particles in many major brands of bottled water. The study was conducted after earlier investigations found microplastics in tap water, sea salt and fish – meaning that they have entered the food chain.
However, The World Health Organisation is now launching a review into the potential risks of plastic in drinking water. It will assess the latest research into the spread and impact of ‘microplastics’ - particles
Bruce Gordon, coordinator of the WHO’s global work on water and sanitation, told BBC News: “When we think about the composition of the plastic, whether there might be toxins in it, to what extent they

THE RISE IN POPULARITY OF FILTERED WATER The National newspaper carried a story last year, quoting one of the consultants on the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development, Dubai-based researcher Stephen King. He said that he has been drinking tap water for the past 15 years and, in a very disturbing comment added: “By 2050 there’s going to be more plastics in the ocean than fish.” He went on to say: “I drink directly from the tap for environmental reasons. That’s how I was brought up in the UK, so it’s just the norm for me.” The above helps to explain the huge rise in popularity of filtered water over the last twenty years. In fact, we are routinely drinking filtered water in the UAE, sometimes without realising it! Today, major coffee chains such as Tim Hortons, Costa Coffee, Starbucks, etc. use filtered water as a matter of course as a costeffective and environmentally-friendly way to consume clean drinking water. Leading Dubai-based water filter company, Liquid of Life, tells us the most commonly-asked questions about installing water filters at home – and gives the answers.
I have a small family. Is an under-the-sink system cost effective for us? The average family goes through three-to-five 5-gallon bottles a week, at an average of AED 8 each – or spends around AED 1,200 per year. Our underthe-sink systems start at AED 950 + VAT. There is also the added benefit of not having to order and carry heavy bottles – it is completely hassle free.
What does the water taste like? Taste is such a subjective thing. Some people notice a difference and some people just don’t. The general feedback

chemical’
that we have is that the water does taste cleaner and less “chemical-ly” which is the taste of water without the plastic. Best thing to do is to try it yourself!
Why is an under-the-sink unit a green solution for the home? Billions of plastic bottles are thrown away every year, which not only pollutes the land, but also as the plastic degrades, toxins will spread into the water table. Installing an under-the-sink filtration unit
provides you with filtered drinking water without the associated environmental impact plastic bottles have.
I want to have an under-the-sink system installed, but I may be moving soon. Will I have to buy another system when I move? Not really - if you give us a call and let us know you are moving, we can come and take your existing filtration unit and fix it in your new location.
How often do I need to change the filters? Filters are only required to be changed once a year. Every 12 months we will contact you to let you know the filters require changing and we will arrange a mutually convenient appointment to come and provide you with the replacement filters.
I want to order an under-thesink unit system, what do I need to do? Simply get in touch with us - call us on 04 441 9236 or email us your details and enquiry and we will be happy to arrange a unit to be installed for you. NUTRITION FOR TWEENS
By the time a child reaches 10-13 years of age, most of them should know which foods are healthy and it is therefore a good time to encourage them to make their own nutritious choices.
50 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
ENCOURAGE THEM TO COOK If your child is over 10, encourage them to look through cookbooks and choose new, healthy recipes for the family to try. Your child can make the list of ingredients needed and go shopping with you. Preparing a meal gives tweens the opportunity to learn the organisational skills, be creative, help the family, and share in the enjoyment of eating food they prepared. KEEP FOOD CHOICES INTERESTING Switch things up so they don’t get bored of predictable meals. There is no reason why you can’t make breakfast foods like eggs or savoury pancakes for dinner, and make a dinner food like tacos for breakfast. Tweens like knowing their parents can be flexible with routines, and choices. Do make sure to continue to model good food choices by including plenty of fruits and vegetables in all of the meals. CONSIDER A MULTIVITAMIN SUPPLEMENT Remember the kids at your school who left for summer break and returned to school in September a foot taller? Tweens and adolescents grow rapidly and need calcium to develop good bone health – both now and in the future. Adolescents need at least 1,500 mg of calcium a day to establish their ‘bone stocks’, so consider giving them a calcium supplement. LIMIT FRIED FOODS As the main role model for food choices in the home, please make sure your family limits its intake of fried foods, fatty foods and junk foods. Whatever food choices you make, these will be the ‘normal’ foods that your children will be used to. Since you control the shopping list, choose your groceries carefully. Don't buy carbonated drinks, chips, sweets, cookies, ice cream or cakes. For your children’s sake – and as the best way for them to form healthy habits – choose nutritious alternatives that include an array of colourful fresh fruits and berries, popcorn, pretzels, cheese and crackers, raisins, nuts, carrot sticks, yogurt and dried fruit.
“
It is surprising how much a child’s
self-esteem is tied into good clean food.
“
Here are some tips to help your tweens to make good choices:
Allow your child to view these as ‘normal food,’ as the benefits include better focus and performance at school; the essential vitamins and minerals they need to grow and develop; more energy; better moods and less mood swings. All of these build the important foundations of the healthy adults they will become. MEAL TIMES WITH THE FAMILY One of the best and most influential opportunities for your children to develop healthy habits and attitudes towards food is sitting down together at mealtimes with the family. Dinner time is especially valuable. After everyone has finished with work and school for the day, sitting together for
the family dinner allows you all to spend valuable quality time sharing the day's events with each other. There is something very comforting about doing this and your child will automatically have positive feelings towards dinner because they are making a contribution that everyone is listening to. Family dinner time is about sharing experiences, talking about how everyone feels about the event of the day, getting things off their chest and discussing problems. However, the family mealtime together is not the right time for discipline or stress – so do what you can to keep this special time relaxing and enjoyable for everyone. Respect the time you have together by switching off the TV during dinner, which encourages everyone to focus more on each other and good food. Research has shown that teenagers are less likely to participate in high-risk behaviours if they have shared mealtimes with their parents. SELF ESTEEM This might seem like an odd addition to an article about nutrition, but it can be surprising how much a child’s selfesteem can be tied into the good food and nutritional habits described above. Weight: A healthy diet, combined with lots of the kinds of physical activities kids love will help them to maintain a healthy weight. Being a healthy weight for their age is an important factor in helping tweens to feel they ‘fit in’ with their peers and have the energy for all the running around they’ll be doing at school. Never under-estimate the power of either a negative body-image, or a positive one. Acne: The dreaded teenage spots are not necessarily inevitable. Along with hormonal changes at puberty, a diet with too much sugar, a regular intake of fried foods and insufficient fresh vegetables and salads are all factors in a spotty complexion. Spotty skin greatly affect’s a child’s self-esteem and confidence – and again, this is something you should never underestimate. Make sure you include lots of freshly prepared, healthy foods in their diet to combat this. For further information: www.MotherBabyChild.com MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MAY 2018 | 51

HOW TO PREPARE FOR IVF TREATMENT Infertility has many causes and can be a result of several contributing factors, often occurring in a couple simultaneously. Head of Conceive - The Gynecology & Fertility Hospital in Sharjah, and top UAE fertility expert, Dr. Pankaj Shrivastav, talks to us about how to get prepare your body and mind for IVF.
58 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
A
wareness is the key to dealing with infertility and while you may not be looking to start a family imminently, it is good to know the factors that can affect fertility and take steps to address them. These are some of the things that you need to be aware of before starting a family: KNOW WHEN TO SEEK HELP Couples should know when to seek reproductive medical advice. A younger couple could wait for a year of trying for a baby before seeking medical advice, but if the wife is over the age of 35 and has not conceived within six months she should go to a fertility doctor immediately. Do your homework and seek a doctor based on their credentials. It is also wise to practice safe sex to minimise the risks of contracting infectious diseases, which might hamper one’s fertility. Be aware of when is an optimal time for your body to conceive a child and try not to push back on starting a family. Find the balance between work and a happy married life. CHANGING SOCIAL TRENDS AND GAMETE FREEZING An important aspect of today’s society is that women are marrying later in life than was the norm in previous generations. More and more women are opting to pursue higher education and careers and delaying settling down. Unlike men, women face a decline in fertility as they increase in age, making it much more difficult to conceive at a later stage. A woman’s fertility peeks in her 20s. Until around the age of 38, the egg quality and number is still relatively reasonable but after 40 years of age, the decline in fertility is rapid and the chances of conceiving are
extremely low. If you are thinking of having a family, consult an infertility doctor for options such as preserving gametes from your younger, fertile self to be used at a later stage. BE FINANCIALLY SMART Infertility treatments are expensive and often require several rounds of treatment. It is important to be aware of the costs of the treatments. For example, the Conceive Gynecology & Fertility Hospital in Sharjah and Dubai, run by internationally-renowned fertility expert, Dr. Pankaj Shrivastav, charges AED 15,000 for a single round of IVF treatment. Before making a decision, you should consult with a couple of doctors and choose one that suits your budget range and has valid credentials. Even though prices are subject to changes depending on manufacturing and equipment costs and VAT, by way of a guideline, Conceive provides the services below, with the following costs: • • • • •
Ovulation Induction – AED 1,500 Intra-uterine Insemination – AED 3,000 In Vitro Fertilisation – AED 15,000 Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection – AED 19,000 Preimplantation Genetic Screening – AED 40,000
AVOID ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS Over the last 50 years, there has been a marked trend of deteriorating sperm quality due to a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors. This may include higher levels of pesticides, chemicals and hormones used in dairy, poultry and livestock farming. Similarly, ongoing exposure to radiation from laptop MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MAY 2018 | 59
health and cellphone usage are associated with poor sperm quality. Toxic chemicals from the burning of industrial waste, plastics and exhaust fumes have entered the water table and are now being found to affect egg quality and production in women, thereby risking their fertility levels. Be aware of pesticides and hormones in the food produce you consume, which find their way into our bodies and adversely affect sperm and eggs. They act as ‘hormone opposers,’ disrupting the reproductive mechanisms in our bodies and resulting in infertility. There are also certain professions which bring with them exposure to toxins and pollutants in the air such as chemicals, solvents, pesticides/fertilisers and leadbased paints. It is important for men to wear the correct protective gear and clothing to reduce the extent of exposure.
Alcohol and recreational drugs – simply avoid them! For men it is very important to note that steroid use and abuse is detrimental to the production and quality of sperm. MAKE HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES What we eat has an influence on the acidic and alkaline levels of our body. While the human body is able to tolerate fluctuations in pH levels, a major drop in these levels can have a major impact in the reproductive process. This is because sperms prefer an alkaline environment, as opposed to an acidic environment; in other words, higher pH levels are more ideal for sperm. Ideally, a woman’s vaginal pH will levels range from 3.8 – 4.5 for most of her cycle. Then during ovulation, luteinising hormonal surges are meant to keep vaginal pH levels within the 7 to 14 range. These levels are considered to be within the alkaline range, and are nontoxic to sperm – meaning that these pH levels help them survive for up to 48 hours 60 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
inside a woman’s reproductive system. To ensure that the pH level of the body and reproductive tracts remains normal, start by replacing or decreasing the consumption of acid forming foods such as caffeine, alcohol, sugar, red meat, processed foods and dairy products. Increase your consumption of alkalising foods and incorporate activities such as regular exercise and massages, all of which have a calming effect. ADOPT A FITNESS REGIME A fitness regime is very important to balance out the calories you get from your food. If it is difficult to walk or cycle to work, make a habit of waking 2-5 flights of stairs several times a day and time yourself. You know you’re getting fitter when you do this in a faster time! Gradually increase the number of flights of stairs. When the weather is good, go for a jog on the beach or in the park. The fresh air and cardio will do wonders to
“
If you are
over 35
and have not conceived within six months of trying, see a fertility doctor.
“
AVOID SMOKING AND ALCOHOL In this part of the world, smoking is by far the greatest adversity that threatens fertility. Both sheesha and cigarette smoking are lethal for eggs and sperm alike. A female smoker is known to reach menopause nearly five years earlier than a woman who is a non-smoker. Similarly, sperm production is stressed by cigarette/ sheesha smoking and results in low quality sperm.
PCOS AND OTHER HORMONAL IMBALANCES Incidents of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (commonly known as PCOS) have recently increased in frequency, yet awareness of the disorder lags far behind. The UAE is home to large populations of women from South Asia and the Gulf region, both of which are associated with a high degree of insulin resistance and metabolic syndromes like PCOS. Obesity makes insulin resistance worse because there is greater strain on the pancreas to produce more insulin to control the sugar circulating in the body. Unfortunately, in the UAE obesity is becoming a huge problem due to our indulgent and sedentary lifestyles. Obesity is detrimental to ovulation or egg production. That said, it is worth noting that just a 5% weight reduction in women who are insulin resistant and have PCOS is known to take a woman from being anovulatory (not producing eggs) to ovulatory and fertile (producing eggs).
your mind and body. Try not to take the car everywhere – make a habit of walking to your local grocery store. Aim to get 3-4 hours a week of intense workouts, as the habit will not only keep diseases like diabetes and heart diseases at bay, but will also boost the wellness of your reproductive organs, thereby increasing your fertility. GUARD AGAINST OBESITY One of the most notable lifestyle conditions that adversely affects fertility rates in men and women is obesity. In most cases, obesity gives rise to diabetes and/ or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). These in turn make it much more likely for women to gain more weight and this can result in them becoming ‘anovulatory,’ or unable to produce eggs. It is worth noting that you should be careful about not just how much you eat, but also what you eat. Opt for low glycemic index (low GI) and wholesome foods in balanced, regular meals.
STRESS AND MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS Stress management has been a hot issue for fertility experts, with researchers now implementing a holistic approach towards the treatment of stress. It has been scientifically proven that stress is both a cause and a result and plays a huge role in fertility issues. Stress often triggers a change in a woman’s regular hormonal balance. This could make ovulation, menstruation and conception more difficult. When you are trying to conceive, aim to be as stress-free as possible. Great ways to reduce stress is to include activities like yoga, exercise and taking proper time out to simply relax – either with friends, or on your own. Infertility is incredibly draining emotionally and financially - and couples must be aware of the hardships they will face during their treatment. At Conceive Gynecology & Fertility Hospital, we try to reach out to our patients and encourage them to talk about their treatment process. By expressing and sharing their issues, we have seen a shift in how infertility is received. Our counselling sessions are made available through our staff, our blogs and on our social media channels. EXERCISE AND YOUR CHILDREN Most parents realise that exercise is important and here, fitness experts, Fit Squad DXB explain why it is so important for our children’s physical and emotional health, and then how we can help our children – and ourselves – to exercise.
A
ccording to experts, children should be getting at least one hour of exercise every day. This needs to include aerobic activity, muscle strengthening and bone strengthening. One recent study shows that infants and toddlers need at least three hours per day of movement, which at toddler stage, tends to happen through play and their natural penchant for running around.
THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE Regular exercise provides the following benefits: • Stronger muscles and bones • Weight control 62 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
• Decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes • Better sleep • Greater ability to handle physical and emotional challenges Children who exercise regularly and eat healthily are likely to: • Perform better academically • Feel better about themselves, their bodies and their abilities • Cope with stress and regulate their emotions better • Avoid feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.
OBSTACLES TO EXERCISING
We’re guilty of often considering other things essential, but not exercise. These are the common reasons:
• Life can feel so busy that despite good intentions, it can be difficult to make the time • Unlike previous generations, you may not feel comfortable sending your children outside to play without proper supervision • Also, there are so many other sedentary activities that are competing for your children’s time and attention. Although it can be difficult to start any new behaviour, the benefits listed above offer
a compelling case for putting in the effort and making exercise/activity a priority in your children’s lives.
HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO EXERCISE? Let them copy your behaviour
If you show that you are important enough to take care of yourself by making exercise a priority, your children are more likely to think exercise is important for them. If you act like exercise is a boring chore, your children will also take your lead. Be happy and encouraging about the advantages of exercising to them and minimise the negatives in your own dialogue – both to yourself and to your children.
Listen to them if they are reluctant If children are negative about physical activity, listen respectfully and let them know you acknowledge their feelings. It is only when children feel that their concerns and their grievances are being heard are they ready to hear what you have to say. Then, you can move on to brainstorming fun ways to get exercise – one of my favourites is ‘I bet you can’t get a goal past me in the park – and join them for a football kick-around in the park. Kids absolutely love this, and adults find they do too!
Find something fun It is relatively easy to start an exercise programme, but difficult to maintain one. And it is nearly impossible to maintain a program you do not enjoy. However, if something is fun, your child is much more likely to want to repeat it. But do remember that every child’s definition of fun is different, so also try a family bounce around at a trampoline park; take a beach ball to the beach; go swimming with the kids; or organise a picnic with some bats and balls, which will encourage some fun running around.
If your child needs help, enlist a specialist children’s fitness trainer This is a brilliant option for children who might be overweight, or unused to exercise. In these cases, you should never under-estimate how low your children’s
confidence and self-esteem can be when they see their school peers, friends and siblings happily running around, when they cannot. This situation makes starting to exercise a very delicate and difficult thing to talk about for them. However, more and more overweight and under-confident children are having fun working with a structured programme, created by a specialist children’s fitness trainer. Co-founder of Fit Squad DXB, Devinder Bains, says: “As well as working with both pre- and post-natal mums on their bodies and fitness, we have specialist trainers for children and they really know how to relate to kids and make exercise great fun. Our trainers are really sensitive to how each child feels and genuinely ‘buddies up’ with them to encourage them and make them proud of their achievements in every session. Because they are children, it doesn’t take long to show some real results, which just spurs the
child on to embrace more exercise, with great enthusiasm. We find that kids very quickly look forward to their sessions and the transformation in body, mind, energy, confidence and even food choices, can be absolutely amazing.”
SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS
Decrease screen time! The more time spent in front of a computer, TV, phone, etc., the less time is available to be physically active (or read or partake in other beneficial activities). Whether they see it or not, children crave and appreciate structure, boundaries and direction. So, limit screen time, make sure they know they are getting active regularly and balance it all with a healthy, fresh food diet and quality, active family time. For further information and help in enlisting a specialist fitness trainer for children, visit: www.FitSquadDXB.com or call +971 52 870 6369 to talk to Devinder Bains from Fit Squad DXB, our fitness expert partners. The Cromo Aroma facials use a holistic system to not only treat superficial skin concerns, but also address the inner imbalances related to the high stress and other health factors that can affect your skin negatively. The Holistic System originates from a very important concept - that the skin never lies, but instead clearly reveals the condition of our health and lifestyle. Every concern that appears on our skin is actually an inner imbalance related to the high peaks of physical and emotional stress, as well as bad habits such as an unbalanced diet, smoking and lack of exercise. The treatments are currently available at Blush N Curls salon, with one winner getting the chance to win a facial from Marzia Clinic, as well as a fruit full body massage.
