H

ello Mum, Happy back-to-school season! Growing up in the UAE, I always had a love-hate relationship with the month of September. I was excited to go back to school to meet my friends, shop for school supplies, and learn from those new books that smelled of freshly printed paper. But the thought of cramming all my homework into the weekend before the term began, waking up ridiculously early, and weekly tests and exams, brought around equal amounts of sorrow. I couldn’t stay up late to read or watch movies. In addition, the next long holiday would be months away – it felt like years as a kid. Now, over 15 years later, I know it can be tough for mothers too. If you or your child are suffering from holiday withdrawals, turn to p20. Since children are all geared up to learn this month, instil the practice of saving (p35) and good reading habits (p31). In each issue, we also speak to mumpreneurs, mums-to-be, and health and medical experts (from p42). We’ve also covered the latest in beauty, fashion, kidswear, home décor and back-to-school supplies, in our Good Living section (p49). Don’t forget to treat yourselves to a day out with the other mums.

Happy reading!

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE

EXPECTING

About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be

FEBRUARY

My husband and I got married in November, and both knew we wanted to start our family as quickly as possible but had no idea how long it would take. It was a sudden realisation it may not be easy; I didn’t realise how much I wanted a baby until months passed with no blue line. Luckily, just three months later, we were blessed with the blue line, and pregnant with our first born!

MARCH

I found out on Mother’s Day I was having a baby. What a gorgeous day to find out you are going to be a mum. My husband works in Saudi Arabia and I didn’t want to tell him over the phone, so I avoided his calls, and sent selective messaging for a couple of days knowing he would be home for the weekend and I would be able to tell him face to face. The weekend arrived, and I presented him with a ‘Hero Dad’ mug, but he completely missed the relevancy. With a nudge of a look, he got it, which sent him into a second of shock, and then pure excitement and joy. We were going to be parents.

APRIL Frankie Hilton, Co-founder of the newly launched @expatmamas.me (the journey of two expat mums-to-be, in the UAE & KSA) 14 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

This month was all about downloading apps and plenty of research on Google. I knew that my baby was the size of a plum, and I may or may not be faced with bleeding gums, increased cellulite, and acid reflux. I learnt new words - hello, Linea nigra (the dark vertical

pregnancy line that appears on the abdomen). I have the most amazing Doctor in Dubai; Dr Amber at Healthbay who keeps me very calm and has pulled me away from my incessive research. I’m told, the priority is my baby, not my ‘bacne’ (back acne), or 10kgs weight gain in two minutes. Fair point. April saw our safe 12 weeks, which was such a huge relief and gave us the opportunity to shout our pregnancy from the rooftops. We had a holiday booked in Bali, so took this opportunity to announce our pregnancy via social media to all our family and friends.

MAY

This month we had our first 3D scan at Genesis and found out we’re having a little boy. Cue the Gender Reveal Happy Bubble Balloon! As quite the girlie girl, I had really wanted a mini-me baby girl, but I have now come to terms with having a little boy, and Dad of course was thrilled to find out his first born is a boy. I now have a questionable bump. I’m desperately wishing for my bump (fast forward to the third trimester and looking a little bit like a baked potato, and I’m retracting my desperation for a bump at this early stage).

JUNE

This month I may have been a little over ambitious with my Dubai summer escapes and booked two trips to Italy in one month. This took a little bit of a toll as I entered the second trimester with

exhaustion. I also ate Italy out of pasta and pizza; which is quite impressive. I was so lucky not to have any morning sickness in trimester 1, but the second trimester saw a new level of hungry, and tiredness (which was fixed with food). Hello bump, I have been asking about you (or food baby, hard to tell). It’s also time to shop. My husband and I visit Mamas & Papas at Dubai Mall for a Personal Shopping experience which was a fantastic educational piece. We left with a full pram set, car seat, and every single outfit with animal ears.

JULY

Imagine being 100% hotter than the average human, and then imagine being

in Dubai. One word for pregnancy in July: melting.

AUGUST

As an expat mama, you may be as lucky (and spoilt) as me to enjoy two baby showers. One in your home country, and one in our expat home, Dubai. Friends, family, flower walls, cakes so pretty you probably shouldn’t eat them, silly games, props - the more photo opportunities, the better. We are so lucky to enjoy monthly Doctor check-in’s, in Dubai, as in the UK you can have as little as two scans the whole pregnancy. I love seeing my little boy and hearing his heartbeat every month. I just can’t wait to meet him now. See you soon little man.

24 HOURS

in the life of a Mumpreneur 6:45AM

9:00AM

I am an early riser, no matter how late I end up going to bed, especially if it’s a weekday or a school morning. My days begin with me cuddling my kids – especially the younger ones who love it.

7:00AM

PRATHNA ADNANI Marketing and PR Director at Multiplex International (distribution company)

I head to the kitchen for a much-needed cup of tea followed by a quick bath, morning prayers and breakfast at home. On some days, I drop my little ones to school and head to work.

16 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

My position requires a lot of ideation, meetings, and activities for over 70 brands. Hence, my work day begins with updates from my secretary on my meeting schedule, followed by a catch-up with the marketing manager to discuss brand ideas and streamline the activations. I get actively involved in social media and brainstorm branding on our product displays. I also make it a point to meet all the heads of various departments to discuss brand performance, and plan events and promotions. Our own brand, Xcluzive, is in its infancy stage and it’s one that I am heavily involved with. A lot of discussions and concepts are required to help it grow, in terms of having the right products, pricing, advertising, digital activations and events for solid brand awareness.

12:00 PM

After a long day at work I’m usually back home by this time. I spend a few hours playing with the kids, cycling around the neighbourhood, and reading stories. My daughter Divina is about to graduate from school and likes to take me through her day-to-day activities. I tend to spend quality time at work with my oldest daughter Revna and my husband Vinod Adnani, who is the Founder of Multiplex International.

7:00 PM

It’s time to tuck into lunch. I rarely have time to head out, so it’s usually in the office. I swear by simple, home-cooked meals.

Having work-life balance is very important for any working professional. Three nights a week I dine out, and it’s usually Mexican, Balinese, Italian or Indian cuisine. To be honest, I prefer grills. When I do head out, it’s almost always to my favourite restaurants - Il Borro, Flamingo Room by Tashas, Zuma, Loca and Bagatelle Bistro.

12:00 AM

I head to Pilates Academy JLT for a class twice a week.

8:00 PM

6:00 PM

It’s that time of day when I like to cosy up in bed with a great book. At the moment I’m reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2018 | 17

BEAT THE SUMMER BLUES

20 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Late nights, lazy mornings, running around carefree without a schedule, unfortunately, it’s all come to an end with the start of the new academic year. Here are five tips on dealing with those late-summer blues, to ease the transition into the school year

LISTEN WELL Children like to share feelings about their school, classroom talk, or any anxiety they have when you are paying close attention, perhaps during meal time or before bed. Make sure you listen closely and discuss the scenarios. It’s often best to avoid trying to cheer them up instantly, even though listening to their problems may be heart-breaking. If the problem is them missing the free schedule of summer holidays, tell them you miss it too, and that it’s only a few months until the both of you can carry on with the holiday schedule once again. Once children feel heard, they are willing to explore solutions together.

INVOLVE THE KIDS Teach your children the importance of scheduling by assisting them with their homework calendar, setting playdates, starting a chore sheet, creating a lunchbox menu, and picking outfits for after-school activities. As we know, children often have opinions about what they want to wear, eat at school, or do at home. Allowing them a little freedom to be in charge of their own schedule not only makes them more enthusiastic, but also gives them a sense of connection to the activity. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2018 | 21

parenting TROUBLESHOOT PROBLEMS While it isn’t ideal to think of potential problems with your child, it’s always better to prepare yourself and him/her for the scenario. If your child is starting a new nursery, visit ahead of time, go over the route there and try to make your child understand that an exciting journey lies ahead. You can also role-play situations they might have trouble with. For instance, if they are under the impression this year will be harder, or if he/she is now doing the commute on the bus, try to discuss the matter further to give them a sense of relief.

RELAX TOGETHER A few minutes of meditation can change the course of your day. We hear this all the time, yet, finding the time to practice it is a mission. By teaching children relaxation skills to use whenever they start to get anxious, they are already in the habit of calming their mind. The activity of teaching kids to be present and mindful is being practiced in certain schools around the country, however, it’s great if they can practice it whenever required too – perhaps at the end of the first half of the day, during recess, or when placed in a difficult situation. You can also teach children to visualise images of happier experiences from the past or the summer holidays. To do this, show them a photograph, speak about the memory in detail, and try to get them to respond in a positive way so that they recall this image whenever required.

SET GOALS Review the previous academic year – grades, progress, and activities – with your child, and write down a list of goals for the upcoming year. This not only gives them something to work towards, it will also give your child an understanding of their progress. If your child looks forward to summer travels or long weekends, you can incentivise the goals by noting down an activity or experience he/she would like to try when the time does come around.

22 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

It's that time of year! Teach your children the importance of saving, reading, and much more. Don't forget to get them excited about the year ahead with new, funky supplies

AN EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION Explore the Arbor School’s ecological approach to academics

In

a world beset with environmental pollution, habitat destruction, climate change and the many ecological, social and economic problems that arise from them, a new school in Dubai is calling for a fresh approach to education. The brainchild of Praxis Education, the Arbor School follows the National Curriculum for England with a focus on ecoliteracy, sustainability and environmental justice. Company CEO, Dr. Saad Al-Omari, believes that an ecologically-focused education is the key. “Ecological thought,” says Dr. Al-Omari, “represents the cutting edge of contemporary thought in the developed world. It has evolved into a coherent set of scientific, environmental, economic, artistic, ethical and educational ideas that underpin every aspect of life in a fragile and increasingly strained global environment. Ecology and environmentalism are excellent lenses through which to examine and assess

the great accumulation of knowledge and experience -- the culmination of millennia of inquiry -- that is available to our students in the ‘information age’. We believe that this corpus is the heritage of all, regardless of gender, nationality or culture, and we aim to provide our students with the intellectual tools to explore and experiment independently with this knowledge and to pursue their interests within it with passion, dedication, and a keen awareness of their ethical responsibility to our planet and the impact they may have on the lives of present and future generations.” “Human impact,” continues Dr. AlOmari, “is having serious consequences on the biosphere, which are impacting not only ecosystems, but also economies around the world, leading to an increase of hardship in societies on every continent and on generations as yet unborn. A contemporary ethic based on compassion

24 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Dr Sa’ad Al-Omari is the CEO of Praxis Education. He has spent the last decade delivering educational services in the Gulf. After completing his Doctorate in Palaeoclimatology at the University of Cambridge, he spent several years in the UK as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of East Anglia. Upon his return to the Gulf, he served as an Assistant Professor at the American University of Kuwait (AUK) and Director of Development and Planning at the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK), where he went on to hold the positions of Academic Dean, Vice President and CEO. He is a member of ACK’s Board of Trustees and the COO (Education) of Al Mutatawera Services Holding Company. He is also a Member of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Child Evaluation and Teaching (CCET) in Kuwait, a non-profit organisation committed to serving the diagnostic and educational needs of children with learning difficulties and disabilities.

POWERED BY:

and responsibility towards both the human and non-human world is urgently needed. It is this higher ethical sense that we aim to instill in our students, in the hope that they will form a vanguard generation that can begin to reverse the harmful trajectories we see unfolding around us.” The Arbor School represents the latest contribution from a group of educators who have long been committed to delivering ethical, compassionate and inclusive education tailored to the specific needs of society within the context of the Gulf. “It is the crystallisation of many of our passions and beliefs about what education ought to be, so we are directing all our energy and resources into making it the best school possible, and a flagship in the world.” Mr. Charles Grayhurst, the Principal of the Arbor School, says that “the curriculum offered at the Arbor School is an essential response to changes in the nature of education, as well as changes in society and the global environment. We will be enriching the curriculum to reflect our commitment to environmental mindfulness, inclusion and project-based, experiential and outdoor learning to sharpen each student’s critical thinking skills by raising their awareness and understanding of the world around them, whilst encouraging them to seek solutions that initiate change.” This thematic approach affords Arbor the flexibility to incorporate elements of the best of different curricula and educational ideas from around the world, such as the International Primary Curriculum, which ensures that learning outcomes are aligned with the 17 Sustainability Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, covering themes such as climate change; gender equality; health and well-being; poverty and hunger; quality education; renewable energy; industry and innovation; responsible consumption; sustainable communities; decent work and economic growth; peace, justice and others. The senior leadership team, which includes specialised Directors of Education for Sustainability, Personalised Learning, Inclusion, and Primary Education, will continuously identify

themes and topics of real-life interest and value that will be cross-curricular. This enables them to cut across all subjects at the same time to ensure that students’ learning remains consistent and interrelated as they move from English Language to Science to Arabic, for example, throughout the day. Ms. Emily Bretl, the school’s dedicated Director of Education for Sustainability and an environmental scientist of more than fifteen years, will work closely with teachers and academic leaders to ensure that the strong ecological ethos of the Arbor School is fully embedded into the curriculum, with themes of ecoliteracy, sustainability and environmental justice incorporated into every lesson and task. Ms. Bretl will have ample space to bring this ethos to life through the Arbor School’s unique state-of-the-art facilities. With three climate-controlled biodomes, learning gardens, indoor atria and a reflection garden as key educational spaces, students can regularly interact with soils, flora and fauna to engage in a deeper understanding of their ecology and environment - a fundamental part of their educational experience. In physical terms, the centrality of the biodomes and learning gardens to

teaching and learning at Arbor, serves to strengthen the sense of community within the school in a powerful spatial, as well as pedagogical sense. “Through experiential education, our students develop a mindset of experimentation, imagination and curiosity with a special focus on ecological mindfulness and ethical values such as compassion, resilience, and innovation,” explains Bretl, “Our biodomes provide our students with year-round, manifold opportunities for experiential learning. Like the Northwoods for a child on a summer morning, the biodomes are places for students to deepen their ecological knowledge, nourish their sense of curiosity and observe the wonders of nature first hand.” The first of three biodomes is designed as a functioning tropical ecosystem that highlights the relationships between organisms − from the tiniest nematodes to the tallest human − and their environment. In this space, students explore the small paths and quiet spots throughout a tropical forest, collecting data, noticing changes, and describing what they observe with detail and thoughtfulness. The second biodome provides students with a green playscape with space to

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2018 | 25

education build forts, collect leaves, dig holes, and play, play, play! This dome is also a place where students can apply concepts and ideas pulled directly from their curricular studies, such as the study of materials and matter in structural design or the role of environment on species adaptation and put them into practice in real life through playful experimentation and free-thinking. The third biodome provides students with an ecological makerspace for scientific experimentation and artistic creation under one geodesic roof. In this dome, students have the opportunity to carry out long term experiments, seeking answers to questions that arise through observation and play. They are challenged to take the initiative to design and test solutions to local issues using materials and methods as diverse as paints and canvas to copper wire and cardboard, with a particular focus on ecological innovation and creativity. A highlight of this dome for students, parents, and teachers alike, is the learning garden, where children have ample opportunity to grow food, flowers, and more than a little joy. Active investigation and engagement throughout all three biodomes allow Arbor students to encounter success, failure, risk-taking, and creative problem solving through authentic experiential learning. Running through the woods, or playing in the dirt, the lesson is the same: life is the education, the world the curriculum. With plenty of access to breakout spaces, the Arbor School is adamant on providing students with maximum flexibility of environment and teaching/learning techniques to cater to the widest variety of student learning styles in group or one-toone sessions. Arbor students will also benefit from a Head of Permaculture and Artist-inResidence, who inspires the whole school community to think and act differently, facilitating their engagement with environmental projects both locally and globally through ecological literacy and creative project-based learning. The Arbor School is also applying a highly personalised approach to education. Supported by a Director of Personalised Learning and a Director of Inclusion, each student is given the attention required to fulfill their potential. “At the Arbor School, we passionately believe that all students deserve a

personalised education and everyone has a right to be nurtured academically, socially and emotionally,” affirms Mr. Grayhurst, “Our curriculum is naturally inclusive, to ensure the best possible progress for all our students. For us, inclusion refers to every single child, no matter their personal needs, and ensures that all students receive a personalised learning journey, access to a mentor and a focus on emotional well-being, values and academic progress.” Every aspect of the Arbor School, from meals to music, arts, Arabic, science and social studies, moves and responds to a clearly articulated spirit of environmental mindfulness with parents playing a central role in connecting the broader local community with the school. This will be done through regular meetings with the Principal, guided readings, play, the co-curricular programme, guest speaker assemblies and other regular events, and through voluntary opportunities throughout the school, such as in the learning gardens and biodomes.

Mr. Charles Grayhurst is the Principal of the Arbor School. Born in the UK, Mr. Grayhurst has been in the education sector for more than 20 years. He is specialised in founding international schools, having held headships and a variety of leadership positions in China, Malaysia, Qatar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and the UK, increasing his understanding of education within a multi-cultural context. Mr. Grayhurst is set on ensuring that the atmosphere at the Arbor School is welcoming and compassionate; which prioritises a personalised learning experience where every child feels valued.

The school has dedicated an entire indoor learning garden to mindfulness. This Reflection Garden is an essential part of the school and is used by students for quiet time, mindfulness, reading and still life art. A Mindfulness Co-ordinator has also been assigned to ensure the rollout of various opportunities for mindfulness throughout the school day. These include sessions at the end of every break and lunchtime to make meaningful reflection time a part of each day. With the support of Counsellors and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy staff, the school actively promotes the Arbor 8 values (serene, purposeful, principled, inquisitive, positive, compassionate, innovative and resilient) as a means to deal with modern lifestyles. “We as educators have been tasked with the privilege of moulding young minds, and it is our duty to utilise this pivotal role to instill strong foundations that will help them to become ethical and critical thinkers,” highlights Grayhurst, “We believe that these are universal values that can help students learn how to cope with their emotions in a rapidly changing world by providing them with opportunities to plan, collaborate, reflect and make meaningful changes to the world around them. This process starts with serenity and compassion because we really do believe that a still mind is a learning mind.”

The Arbor School campus was built to the exact standards of the LEED (Gold) certification. The building also exceeds Dubai Municipality’s and TRAKHEES’ Green Building Requirements by 20% overall. In addition, Arbor uses advanced ventilation and air-filtration systems to provide the highest possible standard of indoor air quality; minimising the presence of volatile organic compounds, dust, pollen, and other environmental allergens, which is particularly beneficial to children suffering from asthma and allergies. The school also uses UV filtration on ventilation ducts to eliminate the spread of pathogens (such as bacteria and viruses) around the school buildings.

“Childhood and adolescence are important developmental stages that lay the groundwork for well-being and mental health in adulthood,” says Grayhurst, “and we believe that children who are centered, purposeful and happy make for better

learners. We are therefore committed to providing all our community with the tools and opportunities to be more mindful, creating a school environment that truly cares about the well-being of all our students and staff.”

Dubai is a rapidly emerging city of global recognition. People come here from many different national and cultural backgrounds to contribute to the creation of a vibrant and modern society with a high standard of living and services on offer. Education is one of the mainstays of this growth, and the Government has dedicated considerable resources to ensuring that education in Dubai competes favourably with the best in the world. Dubai’s children, whatever their national and cultural backgrounds, are truly global citizens who will carry the attitudes, knowledge, and experience they acquire here to almost every corner of the globe. The knowledge and values they acquire during their time at Arbor will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives, wherever they may be. Dubai is striving to leave an indelible mark on the future and the Arbor School is setting out to be an active part of this crucial mission.

DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT

Did your child not get the exam grades you, or they, expected? Kings’ School Al Barsha shares its top tips for dealing with disappointing exam results

F

or many students, opening the results envelope is a time for celebration, but for others the experience can be less positive. The stress, anxiety and sleepless nights in the lead-up to sitting any exam inevitably brings with it a rollercoaster of emotions, followed by what can feel like a frustratingly long wait to get those results. Excited, apprehensive, confused, angry, disappointed - it’s perfectly normal to experience some or all of these feelings. How you feel is related to expectations – your own, those of your parents, teachers, and also your peers. Here are a few scenarios you may face, and some tips on how to deal with them.

I didn’t do well, it’s the end of the world! No, it isn’t. This is just one set of exam results, and while it feels like a defining moment in your or your child's life, to date, it's important to understand that these results only represent the first step in the journey to future success.

But all my friends did really well… Every child is different, and while it’s really hard to not compare personal performance against that of others, just getting through an exam is a massive achievement in itself; and all that study hasn’t gone to waste. Instead, celebrate what you or they did achieve.

I don’t know what to do next Talking it through with someone you or they trust, like a parent, other family members or friends, is extremely helpful.

Getting advice from a teacher or careers counsellor about your options is the next step. Being surrounded by supportive people is key.

I don’t want to go out or see anyone… It's important to take some time to reflect on the situation, but retreating from everyday life and feeling miserable isn't the answer. Go to the movies, hit the mall (with friends or as a family), do some

28 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

exercise to de-stress – it really does help!

WHAT ELSE CAN PARENTS DO? • Keep calm – a calm parent = a calm(er) child • Avoid bland reassurances and, conversely, don’t pile on the pressure • Plan some kind of favourite activity or distraction together • Be available to talk whenever they’re ready to do so.

THE HABIT OF

READING

Cultivating good reading habits in children is essential for their personal development. Here are a few tips to encourage them to pursue this skill MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2018 | 31

C

hildren are exposed to books all day at school, but let’s face it, their school books probably aren’t the kind they want to be reading in their spare time. The key to encouraging reading habits in kids is to begin by reading to them, and with them, at a young age. Why is it a skill that sets them up for lifelong success? Reading not only develops their vocabulary, but also increases their attention span and promotes analytical thinking, allowing them to stimulate curiosity while assisting with cognitive development. Some children may have a natural love for reading, while some may not. If your child falls into the latter category, these tips will help motivate him/her to read on a daily basis.

Turn your stories into skits, so your child has a fun activity to look forward to at the end of a book

education

CREATE A READING CORNER In a section of your child’s bedroom, create a cosy nook with a bean bag, bright lighting, and fun accessories that they have picked out with you. Kids will soon be cosying up with a book, the same way we do. Add in a cup of hot chocolate to make reading time all the more enjoyable.

BE A ROLE MODEL When your child sees you reading, he/ she is more likely to pull out a book and read as well. You can also encourage your child to read a page or two, when reading out bedtime stories.

MAKE IT FUN The whole point of encouraging kids to read is so that they enjoy the experience. As you read with your children, or if they are reading out loud, ask them questions about the story – toddlers can fill in the blanks if they aren’t able to read themselves. You can also turn your stories into skits, so that your child has a fun activity to look forward to at the end of each chapter or book. Which child won’t want to re-enact the tea party from Alice in Wonderland?

LET THEM PICK Reading should be a fun activity, not a chore. Allow them to pick a genre they like, or any other reading materials – magazines, newsletters. It’s important to make them feel like they are in charge. Take note of their reading levels – children may prefer reading only books with images or illustrations. Encourage them to stretch their ability a bit and read long form, when you think they are ready to do so.

DON’T LIMIT READING TO BOOKS Urge kids to read signs on the road, game instructions, signs that pop up while watching cartoons, menus, and movie titles. There’s plenty for them to read and learn while doing so.

MONEY TALK WITH CHILDREN An age-by-age guide to get children in the habit of understanding money and saving

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2018 | 35

education

When I was younger, my siblings and I were given pocket money on a monthly basis. What we wanted to do with it was completely up to us – it was usually spent on accessories I didn’t need and copious amounts of candy or snacks at the ice rink or cinema. We were always told to save, however, the habit didn’t start young and looking back, I do regret it. The addiction to spending came about quite easily, although over the years I’ve realised it’s about spending wisely - rather than just on anything and everything I want - or better yet, living by Warren Buffet’s quote, “do not save what’s left after spending, but spend what’s left after saving.” If you are looking for ways to introduce finance to children, there isn’t a better time than today. Follow our nifty age-by-age guide.

Ages 2&3

Begin with the different size coins, 0.50 fils and Dhs1. At this age, try to play the

coin identification game. Trace the coin on a sheet of paper and colour each shape. You can then ask your toddler to match a coin with the shape on the paper. Make sure to provide close supervision at all times as your toddler may try to swallow the coin. To make the activity even more exciting, create a play store. Keep a selection of goods that are worth a few Dirhams and teach them how to exchange money for goods. Use cereal boxes, a toy, colour pencils, or anything you think your toddler may be interested in buying.

Ages 4&5

Before heading to the supermarket take along any cash vouchers or coupons you have kept aside. A great one to start with is the Carrefour MyClub points voucher where you get points when you spend a certain amount on a product category. Tell your toddler to keep an eye out for the products and notify you when spotted – the vouchers are usually for bread, dairy,

36 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

frozen items, etc. This will keep them alert at all times and give him/her the feeling of helping out.

Ages 6to8

Start giving them a weekly allowance, and create a savings account for them too. “Even if it is just a couple of hundred dirhams each month, over time it will earn interest which in turn will earn interest and accumulate into a nice little savings pot. There are many savings options available so shop around for the best options, and even better, seek professional advice” says Hamzah Shalchi, Regional Director of Guardian Wealth Management. FAB, ADCB and ADIB are just some of the banks that offer children’s savings accounts (visit souqalamal.com or yallacompare.com for more information). You can now teach them the concept of interest too. This is also a great age to start coin collection as a hobby.

Most children spend their money while hanging out with their friends at the mall or theme parks.

Ages 9to12

Since your child is able to read and understand price labels, take them along on your next shopping trip. Teach them to compare bulk items to other products, keeping quality in mind and try to do this activity for one product at a time – you don’t want them getting bored on their shopping trips with you. For example, begin with a renowned brand of chocolate and compare it to a store-or generic-brand, making them understand the differences behind the brand name and whether it is worth the cost. It’s also worth taking your 11 or 12-year old to flea markets, teaching them how to haggle and buy items for the price they think it is worth.

Ages

13&15

The stock market may still seem a little

daunting to all of us, but a child’s early teens are a great time to introduce children to it. Each week your child can monitor a stock, watch financial news and research how the stock values fluctuate. At this age you can also teach them to budget for an item they have their eyes on. This is also a great time to teach children about social responsibility and giving money to charity. It’s best to let your child pick the charitable organisation that interests him/her and donate to that particular organisation or cause on a monthly basis, or whenever possible.

Ages

16+

Most children spend their money while hanging out with their friends at the mall or theme parks. Given them store-value cards and a debit card that enables them to collect points, so that they can redeem this at a store they prefer. You can also give them a pre-loaded card with their allowance. MEDICAL FACT FILE

YOUR CHILD’S DISRUPTED SLEEP CYCLE MIGHT BE MORE HARMFUL THAN YOU THINK… Sleep is the most relaxing and important part of our everyday hectic life and an essential function of the human body. However, at times, we all struggle to get the perfect amount of sleep. That can be stressful for any adult but imagine your child suffering from the same exact thing - clearly a much worse scenario. Sleep deprivation in children is very common but is often mistreated as crankiness and hyperactivity, when in reality, what the child really needs is just a good night’s sleep. Dr. Mishal, Consultant Pediatrician at Health Shield Medical Center and Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital, shares his tips on how to tackle poor sleeping habits in children in a comprehensive manner.

ADAPT GREAT SLEEP HYGIENE The main culprit is disrupted sleep hygiene; proper sleep hygiene can be defined as habits that help promote a healthy sleep pattern using behavioural interventions. This includes limiting or completely avoiding naps during the day. Try to keep the limit to 20-30-minutes power nap which is good enough for your little one to recuperate. Sleepless nights can be caused by several factors – unhealthy sleep hygiene, excessive use of electronic devices, as well as environmental and health factors can all contribute to improper sleep in children.

WATCH YOUR CHILD’S DIET Poor sleep can also be caused by dietary factors, always check what your child eats throughout

the day, especially before bedtime. If the child is consuming caffeinated and sugary food, it can lead to him/her fidgeting throughout the night, waking up early or in the middle of the night and being unable to go back to sleep. Avoid giving them large meals before bedtime and make sure to decrease their fluid intake an hour or two before bed.

DEVELOP A ROUTINE It is wise to implement deep sleep hygiene - in simple terms, developing a sleep schedule every night by picking a time to tuck your child in bed. This trains your child’s body to get used to the pattern, and as they grow they will start to inherently follow this system. When your child reaches the age to start school, they should be in bed by around 8pm. If you have tried these tips before and nothing seems to change, there could be an internal issue and the best way to find out would be by visiting your local pediatrician. This can be anything from an ear infection to allergies caused by pollen, dust mites or animal dander, contributing to breathing difficulties while sleeping at night. It’s important to stay up-to-date on your child immunization and vaccines schedule (especially the flu vaccine every 6 months). If you’ve taken your child to the doctor and there are no health issues, the only thing left to do is to remain persistent. Insist on following a schedule, and try warm baths in the evening right before bed.

I see heavily pregnant women doing CrossFit at the gym and was wondering if I should try it out as well? I’m currently threemonths pregnant and I’ve never done CrossFit before. I’d love to know what you think, and if you have any suggestions? I feel that CrossFit is a really good form of exercise if you’re focused on maintaining the right form throughout. I find that people feel pressured to keep up with the rest of the class, and in the bargain, they lose their form, which can be detrimental to your joints in the long run. During pregnancy I wouldn’t recommend CrossFit, to be honest, as you need to nurture your body the way your body is nurturing your child and you need to do exercises that make you feel good, and help you recover faster post-pregnancy. I would highly recommend Pilates during pregnancy. All of my pregnant clients have thoroughly enjoyed Pilates as it helps them to strengthen and stretch – which is exactly what their body needs. It’s important to realise that as your pregnancy advances, your centre of gravity begins to change and therefore your balance gets affected. Pilates helps to maintain that balance and align the body. I have seen that clients who do Pilates while pregnant find it much easier to bounce back after pregnancy, as their pelvic floor has been strengthened, and they are able to multitask better when their body feels good. Along with this, I of course recommend you do evening walks, as the light cardiovascular activity is great for your body.

NATURAL REMEDIES FROM YOUR PANTRY

Now that children are back at school, and the weather is about to change, they may be prone to flu or a cold. Find out how you can beat illness with age-old remedies straight from grandma’s kitchen 44 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

If

you or your child are suffering from lack of sleep, nutrient deficiencies, or merely in an environment exposed to flu and toxins, your immune system may not be running at its optimum. To shorten the duration of the illness, lessen the symptoms, or better yet, prevent it all together, take a look at these remedies:

SALT

Gargle with salt water. The doctor, a parent, and just about anyone who has fallen sick will recommend this before any other remedy. Not only does this salt help with an itchy throat, it also relieves a sore, pulling out all toxins and viral fluids from the throat area. Use about quarter to half teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-ounce glass of warm water. Repeat the procedure twice a day. If you have a bag of Epsom salts, try a hot soak for 10 minutes to detoxify your system. The minerals in the bath cause the toxins to be released, resulting in a relaxing bath that’s great for the body. Add in a few drops of essential oil – peppermint is great as a natural decongestant and fever-reducer, while the aromatic eucalyptus oil contains antiviral properties.

GINGER

BONE BROTH

An anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial ingredient, ginger aids congestion, nausea, colds and fever. You can have it as a juice shot – buy one from your local juice bar or squeeze and crush ginger to extract the juice. Try to include it in your dishes too – think carrot soup with ginger, or in a vegetable stir-fry.

This trending soup is made from chicken or beef bones, and packed with antiinflammatory amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are easy to digest and boost the immune system. Make it from scratch or order your packets from cleanlivingcompany.ae or bonebroth.ae.

CINNAMON

GARLIC

HONEY

Apart from soothing a throat, this sweet natural food works as a cough suppressant. Opt for all-natural honey without any artificial ingredients added in, and take a tablespoon of it once or twice a day.

Packed with antioxidants, vitamin C, sulphur, minerals, enzymes and selenium, this ingredient is great for those who want to beat the cold and flu. Add it to a dish or eat a whole clove if you’re brave enough to, and can stand the smell.

Cinnamon is a warming agent that helps with chills, aches and pains you may suffer from when the flu kicks in. In addition, it also helps reduce bloating and puffiness. Make a tea with cinnamon sticks and 1.5 cups of water. Simmer on low heat, cover and bring to a slow boil over 25 minutes. Let it rest for 15 minutes until it becomes a deep red. Drink as and when you feel like.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

CHILDHOOD DENTAL CARE

Dr Mazin Hammadi answers all of your important dental questions, from childhood teething milestones to watch out for, to why caring for baby teeth can have a life-long impact on a child’s dental health At what age should children start flossing and how important is it to their daily routine? Children need to start flossing their teeth when their permanent adult teeth start to come through, around the age of six or seven. Flossing is an important part of dayto-day dental care, as it helps to remove plaque under the gums, reducing the likelihood of decay and gum disease.

When does thumb sucking become an issue in terms of dental development? Thumb sucking really becomes an issue around the age of six or seven, when a child’s adult teeth come through. At this age if a child continues to suck their thumb, permanent malformation happens to the jaw and the position of the teeth. In most cases, early intervention is the best option for children. In mild cases, simply putting a band aid on the finger or thumb that the child is sucking will remind them not to do it.

What are key issues that parents should look out for in terms of childhood dental development? It’s important for parents to regularly check their child’s teeth. One of the key things to watch out for is baby teeth that don't shed at the correct age. A retained baby tooth may hide either a missing permanent tooth or a mal positioned tooth. Another thing parents should watch out for, is a sign of a crossbite (where the upper teeth are further inside the mouth compared to the lower teeth.). A crossbite is sometimes accompanied by a shift of the midline which affects the dental arches.

Early intervention is key to stop the problem developing. Key signs to look out for are whether the child breathes from their nose or mouth. Breathing through the mouth can sometimes lead to jaw malformation. Parents should also watch for changes in the spacing between their child’s teeth and any overcrowding issues. If they have any concerns, they should notify their child’s dentist.

At what age do you recommend that children first visit a dentist? I recommend that children should visit the dentist around their fourth birthday. By age four, a child’s baby teeth will have finished

46 | SEPTEMBER 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

erupting and they can better understand and communicate with the dentist. It is important that the first visit to a dentist is a pleasant experience for the child, so that they don’t develop a phobia from visiting the dentists in the future.

What can parents expect from their child’s first visit to the dentist? It’s important to make the child’s first visit to the dentist as pleasant as possible, so that they develop a healthy and positive relationship with their own dental care. On the first visit, dentists don’t plan any dental treatments, but rather just give the child some information about how to clean

526253332

health their teeth most effectively and how to fight decay through having a good daily routine.

tongue thrust and mouth breathing issues and finally fixed orthodontic treatment (braces) to straighten the teeth.

Baby teeth aren’t permanent – why do they need special care?

What qualifications or qualities should parents look for when choosing a dentist for their child?

A child’s baby teeth play a very important role in the development of the jaw. They have an impact on bone development and act as natural space maintainers for the eruption of the permanent teeth. Secondly, proper care of baby teeth is essential, baby teeth can still experience decay if not looked after properly, which can be very painful for the child and could require hospitalisation to fix the issues in the more severe cases.

Choosing a dentist is not an easy thing to do, it necessitates a good amount of research regarding the qualifications and the experience of the dentist. Luckily, these days plenty can be found out online. The reviews by patients on different platforms can provide a very valuable source of information. The worst way to pick a dentist is to simply look at cost, and whether they are charging high or low prices.

What causes cavities and how can I stop my child from developing them? Cavities always happen as a consequence of not brushing the teeth well enough. Food left over on the surface of the teeth – especially sticky foods – produce acid by the bacteria found in the mouth, the best and only way to prevent cavities from developing and happen is by brushing a minimum of two times a day and floss at least one time a day.

What type of protection do you recommend for teeth for school sports? I recommend buying a decent teeth guard whether customised or readymade from the pharmacy. It’s important for children to wear a teeth guard for many sports including soccer, basketball, karate and boxing. These guards are very important on the protection of teeth during these physical activities and prevent any potential damages to the teeth.

What’s the best type of toothbrush for children? I always say that the technique of brushing and the time the child spend brushing his teeth is the most important factor. The type of tooth brush play only a secondary role, whether it is electric or a manual toothbrush.

What are your thoughts on dental sealant for children? Dental sealants are a very cost-effective treatment, they are very cheap and easy and fast to be applied to the occlusal

surface of the teeth, they save your child from a decay that might be very painful and more expensive to be treated.

What’s the best way to ensure children are getting enough fluoride? In Western countries, fluoride is added to the water supply by a concentration of one part per million, which can reduce the prevalence of dental decay 60%. In countries where our drinking water is not fluoridated, mouthwashes and toothpaste rich in fluoride can be another alternative.

In your opinion, what is the best age for a child to get a brace? And what signs should parents look out for? The best age to get a brace always depends on the underlying problem. Sometimes we can start early and sometimes we have to wait until the teeth are bit more developed. As a general rule, we must wait until all or at least most of the permanent teeth have erupted.

What services do you offer for children at your dental clinics? At our clinics we offer early screening of dental decay, sealant and fluoride applications. If you could give one piece of advice to parents regarding their child’s dental care, what would it be and why? My recommendation to the parents is to brush their own teeth in front of their child. This will help their child to value and develop a good oral hygiene routine. Following a healthy diet is also key. To develop healthy teeth, children need to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and fibres and to steer clear junk food. Things like cola, sticky sweets and sugar cause a huge amount of damage to teeth, and should be avoided.

What’s your favourite part of your job? I am an orthodontist, my favourite part is the moment when I remove the braces from the teeth of a child and see a happy and nice smile with their new teeth. This makes me feel full of gratitude.

What motivates you in your career? My motivation is to help people regain their smile. The difficult cases challenge me and motivate me to innovate around the issues at hand. I have spent many years in my specialist area of dentistry, but my strengths depend on my ability to customize and individualize treatment plans for every single case that I come across each day. I am passionate about my work, it is huge joy to me when I am helping my patients and see them satisfied with the results. Details: for more information about Dr Mazin, visit: almariffamc.com

THE FUTURE OF CLEAN HOMES

Air pollution is a global conversation. As awareness rises, attention is moving from outdoor air quality to indoor – where we spend 90 per cent of our time. In fact, the World Health Organization has published guidelines for indoor air quality and fact sheets on household air pollution. Dyson’s new purifying fans use intelligent sensors to automatically detect and display, in real time, particles and gases in the home. The invisible is now visible. The machine’s brand new LCD display shows which pollutants are in the air before capturing them using a 360 degree fully sealed filter system combining an activated carbon filter to remove gases, and a Glass HEPA filter that captures 99.95 per cent of microscopic allergens and pollutants as small as 0.1 microns. Air Multiplier technology and new 350 degree oscillation offers whole-room purification. Paul Dawson, Vice President for Dyson Health and Beauty, said: “At Dyson we develop machines for real people and real homes, creating technology that works well in the test lab, but more importantly doing what they’re expected to do in

fan to automatically clean an entire room properly.” The AHAM AC1-2015 standard sets out how air cleaner manufacturers can define their performance by “the relative reduction of particulate matter suspended in the air in a specified test chamber”. This means their performance is based on cleaning efficiency rates only. We design our purifying fans to go beyond test-chamber conditions and focus on real home conditions. When Dyson engineers set out to design a purifying fan, their research concluded that to clean a whole room properly, you also need to sense pollution events automatically; capture ultrafine pollutants; and project cleaner air around the room using Air Multiplier technology. The Dyson purifying fan is designed and tested to do all of this. a real-world setting. To clean the air at home, a purifier needs more than a filter. It needs to automatically sense pollution, capture gases and ultrafine particles, and project clean air to every corner of the room. The Dyson Pure Cool purifying fan does all of this, making it the only purifier

Available for iOS and Android, the Dyson Link app enables you to track indoor and outdoor pollution, temperature and humidity levels. You can also use it to control your machine. For more information visit dyson.ae.

DINING IN THE CITY

Tried-and-tested hotspots to dine with little ones and adults

#Date-night BA RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE, FAIRMONT THE PALM Making an entrance once again is BA, the contemporary Asian fine-dining outlet on The Palm, that has recently re-opened. Make sure you build up an appetite before visiting, as there’s plenty to try. We highly recommend beginning with their signature steamed buns – the fluffy, slightly sweet bun is available with a selection of fillings. Try the duck with kimchi, or wasabi prawns with mango, for a mild-spicy mouthful. The sushi is served in eight pieces – sounds silly, but we’re always happy to have a large portion of sushi – and we opted for the PMI roll (Prawn tempura, cucumber and cream cheese with wagyu beef and teriyaki sauce). The torched wagyu melts on your tongue, and the entire roll is an explosion of flavours and textures. A wide selection of sashimi is also available to tuck into – perhaps octopus, or scallops before diving into mains? At BA, large plates are, in true Asian-style, generous portions. The Szechuan prawn with scallion was a hit from my end – massive prawns doused in a thick gravy with a hint of chilly, what’s not to love? My dining partner on the other hand loved the black pepper beef with broccoli – chunky pieces of the protein

paired well with the non-greasy, perfectly fried noodles and steamed veggies. Desserts are best shared, but if your partner decides to order warm chocolate pudding with poached pear when all you

want is something light and refreshing, let him/her have that while you finish with a yuzu citrus tart with tiny meringues and tangy yuzu sorbet. Need to know: Contact +971 4 457 3457

#CasualDining KIM’S SINGAPORE SEAFOOD

Nestled at the Al Seef District, this Singaporean establishment – created over 60 years ago – is a great night out for those with children. The décor is modern, with the expansive area boasting walls adorned with animated artwork, vibrant colours at the bar and dining area, and a terrace for when the breeze beckons. DINING IN THE CITY

#CasualDining dish packed with chunky pieces of the fleshy crustacean. For appetisers, we tucked into a homemade chicken prawn roll. This hot dish is a mixture of water chestnuts, minced chicken and prawn seasoned with five spices and soy sauce. Each bite is crunchy outside, soft on the inside, and shaped like a tater tot – fussytoddlers will love this. Make sure to order the steamed bamboo clams too. If you love garlic, this dish really packs it in – it’s best eaten like an oyster, as one large morsel. The main course portions are great for sharing, so we ordered the grilled

BBQ Sambal sea bass that’s slightly spicy and served on a hot plate, and extremely pepper-y chicken. The white meaty fish and chicken are best eaten with steamed rice, to soak up all the sauce and spice. Kim is best known for his signature dish, Hokkien Mee, and you can’t leave this eatery without trying it. The fried yellow noodles are stewed in a robust prawn stock, and mixed with egg, beansprouts, prawns, squid and garlic. End the meal with a light, palate-cleansing dessert such as the lemongrass jelly with lemon sorbet. Need to know: Contact +9714 370 8288

#Family-friendlyMeal CARINE, EMIRATES GOLF CLUB Chef Izu Ani’s latest addition to the scene is Carine at Emirates Golf Club. It’s the kind of spot you can while away with a book and coffee, take the children for an after-school meal, or catch-up with friends over the weekend for a sumptuous breakfast that crawls into lunchtime.

The restaurant is oozing with sophistication. Bread baskets are placed on shelfing units across the wall, while simple furnishing, retro-green leather couch seating, and plates of cherry tomatoes or lemons add a pop of colour. The dining area is flooded with natural sunlight by day, whereas in the evening, the venue turns into an intimate spot with ambience. The Friday afternoon we arrived, we sat near a group of golfers still in their ensemble, and a couple of families with toddlers, giving the restaurant a friendly vibe while still being quiet enough to chat with your dining partner. Our lunch began with a quinoa salad with confit duck leg – beautifully presented with each ingredient really coming through on flavour. This was accompanied by grilled harissa prawns cooked to perfection, incredibly flavour-packed and juicy. For entrees, we couldn’t resist gnocchi Sorrentina; soft tiny pieces of gnocchi were submerged in stewed tomatoes, topped with basil and feta, and lamb marinated in yoghurt and herbs. The sliced lamb was succulent, served with a crisp arugula, apple and almond salad that complemented the dish with a hint of sweetness, while adding texture. For desserts, we kind of went all out, but you would too, once you see the

menu. We aren’t fans of cheesecake as they are quite heavy, but the passion fruit cheesecake here is one of the best we’ve tried in town – absolutely light and creamy. The second dessert, molton brownie marshmallow with crème anglaise was decadent, pure comfort-food, and one we’d

head back for repeatedly. Melted chocolate is fused with chunky pieces of brownie, a fluff of marshmallow sits atop and cream is poured all over – it’s just divine. Go ahead and order an espresso once you’re done, you will need it, just like we did. Need to know: Contact +9714 417 9885
