EDITOR’S LETTER H

ello Mom, It still hasn’t sunk in yet that we’re in 2019! Probably because my festive decorations are still up, but perhaps also because 2018 flew by.

2019! The first thing that pops into my head are my New Year’s resolutions. To be honest, I haven’t made a list, and didn’t spend the first day of the year putting pen to paper either. 2019 is going to be the year I live in the moment. I want to become more mindful, enjoy the present, and focus on my overall happiness and wellbeing. Sure, I could’ve created a list and broken it down into steps and measures I need to take, but it’s not something I want to look at and remind myself about daily. I want to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle without prompting myself every now and then. One where I do whatever feels good, and tune into my body by feeding it right and pampering it with self-care methods. And I wish the same for every one of my readers. This isn’t a way of stirring anyone into my “no-resolution” direction, but it’s just something I’ve realised works for me. Find out what works for you and focus on that. That’s what our cover star Lucy Holmes did the minute she wanted to get pregnant with her second child. Read about her career and life balance from page 20. The January issue also focuses on health, oral hygiene and safety for pregnant women, moms and babies in specific (from page 37). We also look at alternative educational methods for your children (from page 29), and big decisions for your wellbeing and investment portfolio (from page 57). This year is all about learning what’s best for you and your family.

Happy New Year!

I’m looking to kickstart 2019 by making healthy lifestyle changes. I’ll be swapping by morning Americano for organic matcha, which has been proven to have several health benefits. It’s high in natural antioxidants, protects the liver, enhances cognitive functioning, helps inhibit growth of cancer cells, aids heart health, and assists in weight loss. Whisking matcha can be a great mindfulness activity and I can’t wait to get started with this Matcha Ceremony tea set. Dhs365 at avantcha.com

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE

Expecting About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be August

Here we go again! We were not quite expecting to get pregnant with our second so soon but when we got the confirmation all the emotions started kicking in. I had a gut feeling that I was pregnant, however it was too early to tell, and we were flying back to Canada for a family holiday, so I would just have to wait to find out later on during the holiday. Once we got the confirmation from a pregnancy test a few days later I was very excited that I could share the news with my family in person, which turned out to be such a wonderful new experience as we never got to do it face-to-face before and even though it was quite early to tell people, it was worth it for the happiness we all felt. I was very excited and nervous all at once. How can we manage two children? Since this was my second a pregnancy I knew more or less what to expect and I started to prepare myself mentally for transformation my life and body were about to go through.

September

Vanessa Aitchison HR coordinator for a multi-national management consultancy firm

16 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Once we returned from Canada, I got confirmation from my OBGYN that yes, I was in fact pregnant and we heard a strong healthy heartbeat which of course it is always such a relief to hear at each scan you go to. I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong. This time I was feeling all sorts of pregnancy twists that I did not feel with my first. I felt very tired, full of mood swings, pounding headaches and struggling with nausea. All I wanted was plain and simple comfort carbs, it was becoming a conscious effort to try and eat healthy or even get to the gym as I was constantly excusing myself

Even though majority of maternity clothes are boring it is nice to go out and buy some fresh clothes that actually fit you properly even if only for a short time out of going. The struggle of coping with jet lag, the stressful hours at work and having 18-month-old girl was really impacting my family. I was definitely feeling quite different than my last pregnancy. This must mean I am having a boy, was my first thought.

October

It’s a girl! We found out the results of gender through the NIPT test, which was new for me, and I had not done for my first pregnancy. My doctor recommended this due to previous test results that came back with higher risk levels than usual. This was quite stressful on me and I had a lot of sleepless nights which included plenty of hours on google and scaring myself into the worst possible scenarios and outcomes. A huge sense of relief came over me when I found out the results had come back as normal. This was the calm I needed, to get rid of the constant headaches I was facing. Besides, finding out we were having another girl was the financial relief my bank account needed (we still have clothes from my first daughter with tags on, and I have not had to buy one thing). Although gender was never a big deal to me to begin with for both my pregnancies, this experience really emphasized the fact that in my opinion a healthy baby is all that ever matters. With that in mind I think it is natural to have some gender preference and I understand that some people experience their gender news differently.

November

Nothing fits. Even my old maternity clothes which I genuinely can’t stand to look at don’t fit as they are so worn in and over washed from the last time. I have a lot of wardrobe melt downs due to the fact I am in the inbetween phase of “bloat or bump”, which could have easily been both as I was fully

taking advantage of being in the second trimester stage and having left behind the nausea and headaches. This month really picked up socially and I felt that all the fun was starting to begin - the heat was beat; brunches and the beach BBQ parties were back on and this caused for even more FOMO (fear of missing out) and left me feeling gross in everything I was wearing as my gorgeous friends flaunted their best outfits. It was time to clear out my wardrobe and just face the fact that I needed clothes that fit and even though majority of maternity clothes are boring it is nice to go out and buy some fresh clothes that actually fit you properly even if only for a short time. Luckily a few more of my friends have also been pregnant since my first and we are sharing and exchanging our maternity and baby clothes which became quite fun and makes me feel like I have got a free new wardrobe.

December

This year we decided to not travel for the holidays, we just purchased our first house in Dubai and did a lot of renovations to it to make it ours, so we were extremely

excited to move in and spend our first Christmas in our new home. It was quite relaxing having time off work and to be able to spend the days in the garden with my family and appreciate something that is ours and decorate it. Luckily my mom had come out for a long visit which made the holidays feel less lonely. My husband had his family over for Christmas too, so our new house is feeling homely and full which made the festive period fun again and brings back childhood memories with my sisters. I am feeling optimistic and trying to be as positive as I can to just relax and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy. I am well over half way now and the feeling of excitement is starting to overtake the feeling of the unknown and all that comes with it. Of course, I constantly battle through days when I just seriously wonder how my husband and I are going to manage it with two kids, but I also know I need to cherish each step along the way, and I am lucky with the support my family has. With reality checks constantly being thrown in my direction, it is important to really keep myself focused on delivering a healthy baby girl in April 2019.

24 HOURS

in the life of a Mumpreneur 6:00AM

If it’s not the alarm that goes off it’s my 5-month-old. Having most probably woken up a few times in the night to feed the baby, I’m up early to take on the day. After feeding Annabelle I get her changed and then jump in the shower. I then wake Marnix (my fiveyear-old) to get ready for school and have his breakfast, which is usually porridge, force fed might I add, as he’s not a big breakfast person. While he’s eating, I get his school lunchbox ready and hubby and I eat something on the go..

mums! It’s brilliant, as while we all work out, the babies are looked after in a separate area of the gym. There’s also an active mums’ class but I’ve only just started exercising again so I’m in the postnatal group which is less intense.

I head to my Mamabfit class in JLT which is especially designed for pre-and postnatal18 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

I head home soon after and jump on the computer to focus on my script for an event - I’m MCing in the evening. This is usually centred around small additions and last-minute changes. I generally like to read through my script as many times as I can before the event, so I’ll read through it a number of times during the day. This is the first read-through while the baby sleeps.

12:30PM It’s off to one of the mega malls (with the baby as I’m still breast feeding) to pick up a dress for the event. For an awards night, I’ll pick up a gown and if it’s an industry event it’s work wear. I sometimes get to collaborate with some amazing brands such

then a quick sound-check (and sometimes a rehearsal) on the stage, and then into the hotel bathroom to get changed.

7:00PM I watch the crowds come into the ballroom and the nerves creep in (as always). It’s then 'show time' on stage with a warm welcome to the audience and it’s straight into the event. These last three months have been full of awards ceremonies such as the BBC Good Food Awards and the Emirates Woman Awards.

2:30PM

The dress is chosen and its now time to pick up my boy from school. While he sits down for an activity and the baby is entertained or sleeping, I get back on the computer for another script read through. I don’t have a nanny, so I get extra help on work days with Babies and Beyond who are an absolute life saver. As well as being parenting experts, all of their helpers are qualified nurses. It’s such a relief to know the kids are in safe hands as they are all trained in paediatric first aid. So, one of these amazing ladies comes to our home to help with Marnix and Annabelle while I focus on my script and getting ready.

10:00PM

5:30PM

I pump milk for Annabelle and it’s time to say goodbye to Marnix, Annabelle and the Babies and Beyond helper who I brief on bedtime, food and milk. Off to the event! I usually get changed at the event location, so I bring my dress, breast pump (as a backup) and script.

6:00PM

The event ends with a Thank you very much from me and I then shoot immediately back home. I sometimes stay for a meal with the team, depending on tiredness levels, and if I do its straight to the loo to pump milk for Annabelle.

11:00PM

4:30PM

While dipping in and out of what Marnix and Annabelle are doing with the experts as well as doing any last-minute changes to my script, it’s time to get ready for the event. It usually takes an hour with hair and makeup which I do myself most of the time. Having worked as a news anchor for eight years here in Dubai, I’ve learnt a few tricks of the trade. orn south of England, Lucy Holmes has since lived all over the UK, including London where she secured her first marketing role. “I studied Fashion Promotion and Marketing, but later studied a post graduate in Marketing,” she says. The mother of two relocated to the UAE in 2011 with her husband and 16-months old son (at that time) Barney, and soon found herself consumed with the city’s fast-paced nature. “We came because I had been internationally relocated with my role at the time, which was a marketing position for a major FMCG company. We were all here on my visa at first, whilst my husband looked for a role and took care of our son, this is quite an unusual story in the region, and it was great that the Jebel Ali Free Zone was, and is, one of those zones that allows the wife to sponsor her husband.”

Lucy didn’t know much about the UAE at that point, but the one thing she was sure of, was that she would live on The Palm, to be close to the sea. “We love the fact that whilst we are in a quiet area, we are still very close to the buzz of the city. In the UK we lived in a suburban town called Wilmslow, which although lovely was a very expensive cab ride to Manchester for a night out,” she laughs and tells me. Currently holding the position of Head of Marketing for JustKidding and DutchKid (a children’s distributor and retailer, with operations across the region), Lucy tells me she absolutely loves her job and team, and at work, manages everything from projects to shoots, events, online marketing, social media, influencer engagement and more. This mom definitely has an entrepreneurial streak and found herself managing her “third baby” as she likes to call it, MMagazine. ae (@mmagazineme). “Me and three very good friends, came together with the relevant backgrounds and a platform to build an English and Arabic platform for mothers in the region. parenting across the world every week, or either on Skype calls 24/7, with not enough time for her family. “It was a very tough time not only on my family but also on me physically. I had to change my life for my health, happiness and family goals, so I took a part time role with JustKidding and the rest as they say is history.” Lucy believes she finally has great work-life balance, as she can do the school run, spend afternoons with the children and enjoy being with them as they grow. “JustKidding have been wonderful in working around my needs and supporting my ‘balance’. I’m extremely lucky!” Does the part-time gig work for her? Absolutely! “I am extremely focused on time management when I am at work, I work. I don’t take a break and I ensure I get everything done on time. I have also learnt how to really prioritize and what to delegate. Being a mother of two, Barney (nine) and Daisy (two) has, I believe, really given me an advantage in my role, since I know exactly what it’s like to be an expat mum, I know which brands our mums want, and I know what they need in terms of advice, events and support.” When she isn’t in the office, Lucy finds herself either at an event or shoot, doing store-visits at their stores in Safa, Gold and Diamond Park and Abu Dhabi. The remainder of her day is with the children – school pick-up, after school activities and clubs for her son (football) and playdates for her daughter. Evenings are mostly at home where she enjoys dinner with the family and spends quality time with her husband. The routine begins the next day at 6am. “It’s not easy to juggle my many hats to be honest, and I don’t always manage it, however I have a husband who is equally hands on, and an amazing livein nanny. I try and use my time well in the week to get all of my work and other commitments accomplished, which ensures that our weekends are our dedicated family time,” she adds. nationality or background. How does she manage work, the children and a side hustle? “Firstly, it’s important to say that I’ve always worked and even with my first son I went back full time after just ten months. I love having a career, it was always one of my goals. However, having a family

changes your perspective on what you want versus what you need, and as a mother I wanted to be flexible to spend more time with my family, especially after I had my daughter.” Lucy was in a very senior role (VP Global Marketing) for a footwear brand – before having her daughter – and found herself jet-setting

Working moms usually feel mum guilt, due to lack of time spent with their kids. While Lucy does feel it more often than she’d like, and misses her kids constantly, she tries to focus on the facts that she is earning money for the family. “I am fulfilled mentally, and showing her the example that my mum, and her mum taught their daughters, that women work!” says Lucy.

saying“tee-taw” for see saw. I interview women from all walks of life and usually throw in the question, “what’s your motto?” The reply is usually inspirational, or a quote from Gandhi at times, but when I heard Lucy’s I laughed and found it revealed a fun, hilarious side. Her motto is plucked from her first

career role for a major UK Beauty brand and is something that is applicable in all aspects of life, the Kiss strategy “Keep it simple stupid.” As for advice for moms, this career-focused mom says “Don’t limit yourself – you can do it! Be brave, but above all else be gentle on yourself and each other.”

The Benefits of

STEM EDUCATION

Saki Milton, US Schools Portfolio Manager at Pearson Education Middle East, discusses the significance of starting STEM Education earlier on in childhood 32 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

What is STEM?

STEM is an educational acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In the 1990s, in the United States, Science and technology-based professions were being left unfilled in masses creating a workforce crisis as a result of the decline in university students pursuing degrees in STEM fields. The awareness of the importance of STEM-based careers in the 21st century led government entities, tech companies, and leading math and science nonprofits to develop collaborative strategic efforts to increase U.S. K12 students’ interest and international performance in math and science. This is the brief history we now know today as STEM, in particular as it relates to education. STEM has become a global initiative. Many countries including Australia, the UK and even the U.A.E. have introduced initiatives to help students learn more about exploring their careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Each country now designs educational programs and curricula to support the growing interest in these subjects, with the aim to support students who aspire to build their careers in this field. Why is it important to incorporate

STEM education in Early Childhood Development? STEM is much more than learning how to conduct a science experiment or learning how to solve a problem. STEM is about acquiring certain skills sets and character traits that children can learn at a very early age. For example – collaboration, teamwork and communicating are valuable life skills for any individual, and critical for those working in STEM professions. Children also spend a significant amount of time drawing and playing pretend. Early childhood professionals can introduce creative thinking by posing questions based on a drawing that encourage imagination and problem-solving. For example, “What does this do (pointing to a specific object in the drawing)?” “Or, what do you think would happen if this broke?” Creative thinking skills are also developed as children build structures with toys such as blocks. Also, children are masters at learning to work together in groups. Parents and teachers can take advantage of this fact and create simple real-world challenges for children to explore together while having fun. These skills and ways of thinking are critical to early childhood development

and carry into adolescence and adulthood. The last thing I would add is the importance of teaching young children how to use their hands, by encouraging the development of fine motor skills like cutting and pasting. I know this is a technology-based society, where we see a lot of kids on iPads and computers, but it is also equally important for children to engage with arts and crafts, which require cutting, pasting, pulling, and tying things to help develop those fine motor skills necessary for STEM careers. How should it be implemented? We can look at it from a school, teacher's and a parent’s perspective. A lot of schools especially in the UAE employ teachers with diverse backgrounds, making it important for the administration department itself to believe that STEM education learning is necessary for students in their departments. Only once they do that, will the teachers feel empowered to do more activities in their classroom related to STEM. What you don’t want to happen is to have a teacher who previously implemented STEM learning in their home country, be questioned by the administrator on why they are non-traditional approaches to

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2019 | 33

education learning versus worksheets and following a textbook cover to cover. So, right from the administrator level, it is important to have that support and ‘buy in’. In terms of implementation, teachers are provided with so many online courses and resources including STEM Revolution, the National Girls’ Collaborative Project and Techbridge. Teachers are also encouraged to use their own creativity as well and can collect things from around the house like water bottles or coffee filters and other used materials that kids can use for exploration. This is something I would highly recommend for early childhood teachers. We need to remember that children at a young age are constantly learning, hence using things from their natural environment and having them design and build with things that they see around the house every day is an effective strategy. Parents can do the same. What can parents do at home? First, parents can encourage their children to get more involved in Science and Maths. One of the things that I hear a lot with parents is “Oh! Why did they have to include Maths” or “That was not my subject in school” or “I just like to read”. You have to watch the language you use around your children because you want them to develop a natural curiosity and appreciation for these subjects. Using negative language can impact a child’s confidence in those subject areas. What are some of the best practice and innovative ideas that have been tried and tested? Two of the best practises being tried today in the classroom are topics such as rapid-prototyping and makerspaces. Rapid protoyping is slowly entering the education space, but mostly used in businesses such as Google. According to a Pearson Education July 2018 blog post by Nicole Kyriacou, “It’s [rapid prototyping] a concept that allows teams to experiment, learn and adjust prototypes quickly and cheaply, so that projects (and products) get off the ground. Failure is seen as a starting block and an inevitable part of the learning process.” Teachers can use this strategy in their classrooms to teach children of all ages how to focus their ideas, connect to the real world, and learn resilience, all of which are critical to

STEM studies and careers. Maker’s spaces are becoming more and more popular. Education companies are actually developing makerspace kits, designed to get kids learning with their hands. However, kits are not mandatory. Again, parents and teachers can achieve the same goals of teaching creative and critical thinking using common household items. In terms of early childhood development, teachers can create a space in the classroom, where you have assorted materials. Teachers should keep tasks simple and clear and add complexity by introducing new information or a set of criteria. For example, ‘I want you to create a freestanding structure that has to be at least two ft. tall and hold at least ten pounds.

34 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Are there any STEM organisations in the UAE? There are a few organisations, but I would not say they have a specific early childhood focus. What parents can do, if their child is not in school or nursery, is visit science-y places like Legoland or iFly. Both are enjoyable outings full of informal learning of scientific and math concepts. For example, indoor skydiving is perfect for conversations about velocity, gravity, force and speed. Remember, all parents can teach and develop a love of math and science that doesn’t involve expensive toys or excursions by simply taking advantage of “teachable moments” because science, technology, engineering, and math are all around us waiting to be discovered.

Let’s Get MESSY

Curious little minds should be encouraged, even if it means extra work for parents on certain occasions. Nicola Monteath speaks to Penny Newell, Manager of Honey Bee Nursery, to explore why children should get their hands dirty during play time

W

hen most parents hear the words “Messy Play” they cringe and a collage of muddy footprints, paint, glue fingerprints and glitter strewn sofas flashes through their minds. This is followed by the horror of the inevitable extra washing and work involved in the clean-up process. While it may seem like one big mess, ever so often we need to think back to our childhood and fond memories. “Some of my fondest memories are playing with my sister in the mud and baking cakes and cookies with my mother. Mess can be cleaned up but the memories last forever,” says Penny Newell, Manager of Honey Bee Nursery. When children engage in messy play, the materials provide satisfying sensory experiences that stimulate emotional connections and wonderful childhood memories. It helps children to play in their own way, explore new textures and experiment. Children of all ages benefit from this type of play, and adults that allow themselves to play with their children find they have a great time too. Parents can support little ones by joining them and showing them that it is okay to get messy. While playing, you can encourage communication and use descriptive words to increase their vocabulary. When arranging messy play materials, parents should keep in mind the age of the child/children, and their interests, to

36 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

create diverse sensations in texture and temperature. For babies, the best messy play is during meal times, when they get to explore smell, taste, temperature, and texture of various foods. Make sure to dress your child in old clothes or aprons and show them you are excited that they are getting messy, without worrying

about clothes being ruined. Encourage your child to explore and experiment during messy play, there is no specific outcome to be achieved. There is no right or wrong way to carry out messy play, and sometimes the most fun happens when children are allowed to explore without being told how to play. Wondering

what your child will learn? “Through messy play, they are actively practicing problem solving, physical development, language skills, developing their cognitive functioning, boosting their critical thinking and social interaction skills when playing with others, and exploring their imagination and creativity,” says Penny.

draw pictures in it, place in bowls and trays to scoop it etc. You can add sand, ice, and paint for variety.

• Ingredients: paint, sand, mud, shaving foam, slime, playdough, water, clay, bubbles, gloop, etc.

• Go outside: Now that the weather is amazing, head outdoors and do a nature walk or a walk on the beach. There are endless possibilities of sand and water play, shells, seaweed, driftwood, etc.

• Make some gloop: This is a mixture of 1 cup cold water and 2 cups corn flour

• Explore food cupboards: I think we are all guilty of impulsive purchase at the supermarket. Food offers a multi-sensory experience for smell, taste and texture. I am not talking about wasting lots of food, but for things you may never use or are about to expire in a day or two (these can also be dry ingredients such as leftover cereal, dry pasta, etc), see how children can squash, mash, crunch or manipulate. Even leftover spaghetti from the previous night’s dinner can be used for messy play.

• Shaving foam: You can play with it in many ways, spray it on a table top and

• Recycle: Your child can spend hours playing with bottles and/or egg boxes. Keeping items like these, and toiletand kitchen roll-holders, can provide a realistic ongoing play experience that is open ended. In order to make sure your house doesn’t get trashed during messy play it is important to establish boundaries. Your child should know where he/she can go play. “You can also teach your children to clean up after themselves and this can be a part of the fun routine. I would recommend you have a clean-up plan ready for when the children have finished playing (for example have towels and a basin of water handy if indoors),” she goes on to say. Finally, timing is everything, a good time for messy play is before bath time.

GHEE

Dr. Tanushree Jain (PT) is a Performance driven Health & Wellness Coach (MIAP, MIAFT)

Once frowned upon for being high in fat, this clarified butter is an ancient superfood that’s packed with health-boosting properties. Ghee has one of the highest-quality sources of saturated fat, helping boost brain health while protecting it. In addition to this, it heals and improves digestion and has shortchain fatty acids that repair new tissues in the digestive tract. This also protects against colon cancer, leaky gut syndrome, IBS, ulcers, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, among other things. The ingredient is packed with vitamins A, E2, K2, and Omega 3-and 9-fatty acids. Since it has a high smoke point, no milk solids and a rich buttery flavour, use it as an alternative to cooking oil. When buying ghee, make sure it’s 100 per cent grass-fed from pastureraised cows.

Before giving birth I was quite active and went to HIIT and yoga classes weekly. I had to have a cesarean and I’m not sure when I can get back into my workout routine. I’m looking forward to it, but a bit afraid to proceed so quickly. Do you have any diet and fitness tips that you could share?

It’s great to know you were active during pregnancy. It usually takes six to eight weeks to get back to your exercise routine depending upon how well you are healing. It’s always recommended to check for diastasis recti (DR) before beginning your workout regime. Commonly known as Mummy Tummy (a pregnancy style bulge even after delivery) happens as a result of excessive intra-abdominal pressure. Planks, crunches or anything that forces the belly to bulge can pose a risk for further separation. Instead you should focus on strengthening of your deepest abdominal layer known as Transverse Abdominal muscle (TVA), core and practice posture correction. I recommend gentle exercises such as pelvic floor strengthening, abdominal tuck in, heel slides, breathing exercises (four to six weeks after delivery), low intensity workouts such as yoga, Pilates, and brisk walking is recommended after three months, and high-impact weight training and aerobics after five to six months. Healthy weight loss of 1 ½ pound a week is safe as it won’t affect your milk supply. Remember, since the tissues are cut in seven layers in C section, it may take several months or even years for the muscles to regain strength and tone. Slow and easy is the key.

Dental Safety DURING PREGNANCY

Nicola Monteath speaks to Kate Telep, Dental Hygienist at Dr. Roze & Associates Dental Clinic to explore the significance of dental procedures during pregnancy MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2019 | 41

T

here are times when dental work is urgent – there’s nothing worse than root canal pain – and there are times when a cavity is left unattended due to lack of time. It isn’t ideal for any situation, however, is even worse for pregnant women. “Preventive dental cleaning and regular check-ups during pregnancy are not only safe but are recommended. Hormone changes during pregnancy can make the gums swell, bleed and trap food causing increased irritation to your gums and making you more prone to developing tooth decay or gum disease,” says Kate Telep, Dental Hygienist at Dr. Roze & Associates Dental Clinic. Your dental health has an impact on your overall wellbeing, which has a major influence on the health of your unborn baby, so it is important keep your oral health in check throughout your pregnancy. “The first 13 weeks of pregnancy is when most of a baby’s major organs develop. During this period, it is recommended to only have a dental check-up and routine cleaning,” says Kate. If you do require a dental emergency, see your dentist immediately and inform them about your pregnancy to enable them to make an informed decision on all required treatment. Dental work, such as cavity fillings and crowns, should be treated to reduce the chance of infection. “If you already follow a good oral hygiene routine – brushing your teeth twice-aday and flossing daily – it is less likely you will require any dental procedures while pregnant. As well as regular brushing and flossing, you should try to avoid acting on unhealthy cravings,” she says. Kate suggests avoiding brushing your teeth straight after a bout of morning sickness, simply because the acid from the stomach can cause dental erosion and increase the risk of tooth decay by dissolving tooth enamel. Instead, she recommends rinsing with water and brushing 30 minutes later. If dental work is required during pregnancy, and you can put it off for a bit, she highly recommends doing the procedure during the second trimester. “If you require a dental procedure while 42 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

pregnant, the amount of anesthesia administered should be as little as possible, but still enough to make you comfortable. If you are experiencing pain, request additional numbing. When you are comfortable, the amount of stress on you and the baby is reduced,” says Kate. As for a routine x-ray, one of the most common concerns pregnant women have due to exposure to radiation from

x-rays, it is best left postponed until after the birth. “It is important to note that modern dental x-rays use very low doses of radiation, no single diagnostic x-ray contains a radiation dose significant enough to cause adverse effects to the development of the fetus. A dentist will always ensure your baby is shielded from the radiation by using a lead apron and thyroid guard,” she says. Although x-rays are safe, your

dentist may still recommend avoiding them during the first trimester, knowing this is the most vulnerable time of development. Is there anything else that should be avoided or postponed until after the birth? “Yes, elective treatments such as teeth whitening, and similar cosmetic procedures. It is best to avoid exposing baby to any risks, even if they are very minimal,” she goes on to say.

ORAL HEALTHCARE

FOR BABIES

When should you begin cleaning your child’s teeth? It’s a question parents have been asking for generations. In an interview with Dr. Manal Al Halabi, Associate Professor and Chair of Pediatric Dentistry at Dubai Dental Clinic, she discusses why it’s best to start from day one

Oral healthcare is an essential part of a child’s development, so it’s important that the journey begins at the earliest stage possible – as soon as a baby starts feeding. By implementing the practice of daily dental care for your baby, much like bathing, feeding and nappy changing, within a short timeframe it will become a vital part of a daily routine that occurs naturally, without the need to set a reminder. “It might seem strange to consider practicing dental care in babies who don’t have teeth. However, as soon as a child begins feeding from the moment they are born, oral healthcare must come into play,” says Dr. Manal Al Halabi, Associate Professor and Chair of Pediatric Dentistry at Dubai Dental MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2019 | 45

health

Clinic and Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine (HBMDM) at MBRU. Babies can be susceptible to early tooth decay, even before their first teeth start to show, as it develops from the passing of bacteria from parents and caregivers through saliva. For example, bacteria can be spread by sharing saliva on spoons or cups, or testing foods before feeding it to babies. Frequent exposure to liquids or food, other than water, for long periods throughout the day can result in increased susceptibility to cavities. “One way to counter this is to gently clean your babies' gums with a warm baby washcloth after feeding. This early adoption of dental care cleans the baby’s mouth of any additional food remnants which might lead to higher levels of harmful bacteria in the mouth, and this has the same effect as you brushing your teeth after every meal,” says Dr. Manal. Furthermore, it is important to be mindful of a baby’s nursing habits. “Sleeping with a bottle

in their mouth can increase the chances of dental decay and once teething begins, consider using teethers made by reputable companies. “We highly recommend teethers made from a hard material that can be refrigerated, as the cold temperatures eases the discomfort babies feel in the gums as the teeth erupt.” Once the teeth appear, Dr. Manal advises on daily brushing with a soft baby toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride-containing toothpaste (1,000 part per million), equivalent to the size of a grain of rice. It is critical to understand that from a young age, children’s immunities need to be developed as well, so it is vital that we allow the baby to get natural or non-medicinal ways of dealing with the discomfort of teething. “Excessive intake of painkillers or antibiotics from infancy can really take a toll on a child’s immune system, which can result in complications in their health development. Unless antibiotics are prescribed for serious medical

46 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

conditions, we recommend that parents help enhance their child’s immune system by following proper dietary and hygiene practices, including oral hygiene,” says Dr. Manal. The risk of tooth decay increases when children begin consuming solid foods at six months old. Your little ones may quickly develop preference for sweet tastes and being aware of sugar in baby foods is important in the practice of good oral healthcare. Soft, cooked carrots or mashed sweet potato that contain natural sweeteners are a great alternative and meal option. Finally, and these are doctor’s orders, parents play a leading role in shaping good oral healthcare and child development. “One key element of that role to ensure a child is on the correct dental journey is to schedule regular visits to the dentist every six months, after the eruption of the first baby tooth or on the first birthday, whichever comes first, to ensure proper gum health and teeth.” As the famous saying goes, prevention is always better than the cure.

We dined there and got an instant burst of energy from the gorgeous surroundings. That, complete with soul food – what more can you ask for? The menu, we were told, will change monthly to feature dishes that remind the staff of their hometowns (there are 18 nationalities working there). Each dish has a back-story and the staff are kind enough to take you through the fond memories associated with each. Sharing plates are encouraged, so that you can try their selection of small plates. We were recommended five-six plates for two and were quite full by the end of the meal. My girlfriend is not hungry was the first dish we chose, where thick avocado wedges were fried in chickpea batter to create a creamy fry with a crisp coating. Up next were flavour-packed octopus aranicini balls served hot, with a side of pistachio aioli. To balance the flavours, the tuna tostada was our next choice, comprising blue corn tostada made from scratch, topped with a

chunky slice of tuna, and a tangy chilli and cashew oil. For an alternative to a salad, and to pack in a nutritious course, try the warm artichoke in toasted buckwheat and a creamy walnut sauce - this dish really packs in a melody of textures. There was one dish I looked up before dining at the restaurant, and one I couldn’t

wait to dive into, the bone marrow. This indulgent dish truly did touch my soul. Cheesy, I know. But the robust flavours of the bone marrow marinade, the fattiness of the meat supplemented with crispy bits of puffed wild rice and the crunchiness of the sourdough toast offered a beautiful harmony of flavours, textures and umami. We asked for our dishes to be served in courses, so if you do plan on eating light, you could opt for 1-2 plates before the bone marrow or pasta course. The oxtail pasta with pine nuts and pecorino is another stunner, with the slow cooked meat stealing the limelight in each bite - don’t forget to ask them the story behind this Mexican dish. For desserts, don’t leave without trying the tres leches, a sponge cake soaked with three milk varieties. This version, from the Peruvian chef – where the dish originated – is served with a tart yuzu sorbet to counterpart the sweetness of the cake. Once done, you can linger around or retreat to the bar and terrace upstairs for a fun night with your partner or friends. Details: +9714 338 8717

21 GRAMS

After a day at the beach, instead of stopping by the nearest gas station or burger joint for a quick bite, tuck into nutritious, comfort food that feeds the soul. This urban Balkan bistro, tucked into the corner of Park Regis Boutique Jumeirah hotel, is bright and airy, yet cosy. Pastel shades and minimalist décor make up the setting, and your experience begins the minute you are handed their stylish menu that looks like an artsy home furnishings brochure. As you peruse through the pages, sip on refreshing berry-infused water to quench your thirst and order a salad or soup to begin. We skipped appetisers and dove into mains: Pijeskavia (a wagyu beef patty stuffed with bacon and cheese) and Istrian fusi (hand-rolled pasta with mushrooms). The wagyu beef patty was presented on a soft flatbread that soaked up all the juices from the spicy Moravian salad place atop, while the succulent patty resembled a burger and had cheese oozing out of it. Definitely one to try if you love a juicy, meat-y burger after the beach. The pasta, cooked al dente, was topped with a wild mushroom mix, each piece packed with flavour from the sauce and aged cheese.

For something healthy, try the beautifully baked seabass with fennel, celery and green apple for a hint of sweetness. The reason we skipped appetisers was purely because the dessert menu looked stunning, we knew we had to try at least one. We opted for the chocolate hazelnut baklava that’s great for sharing, as it’s quite decadent, and paired it with a strong Turkish coffee to balance the flavours. The baklava is out of this world, with Nutella-like chocolate textured with nuts, crisp filo pastry, and creamy, stretchy vanilla ice cream. Details: Contact +9714 349 0744

STOKE HOUSE, TRUMP INTERNATIONAL GOLF CLUB Views of the lush golf course steal your gaze as you arrive at this expansive restaurant that’s apt for lunch after a game of golf, casual dinner with family and friends, or even just a spot for food and beverage deals for those living nearby. Begin your meal with grilled and marinated octopus and the beef carpaccio with burrata. The cheese pairs beautifully with raw thin beef tenderloin slices that melt on your tongue. For mains, the culinary offerings are aplenty, with pizza, burgers, steak, and seafood and vegetarian options to please all tastebuds. My dining partner opted for Steak and fries, featuring a striploin topped with garlic butter, and fries. While I did suffer from slight food envy the minute his entrée arrived, I was quite pleased to see my enormous portion of Pie and chips, having just finished a workout at the gym. To be honest, the portion is large enough for two to share, with a filling of hot, buttery mushrooms and chicken in a cream sauce. The pastry was done to

perfection, crisp where it needed to be and slightly soft on top to bite through without making a mess. I was bursting at the seams at this point but couldn’t resist their delectable sticky toffee pudding topped with ice cream, accompanied by a cup of chamomile. HURRICANE’S GRILL, THE DUBAI MALL This casual-dining Australian outpost has finally arrived in Dubai, bringing its South African concept to those who love the country’s take on Portuguese fare. The restaurant offers a stunning indoor setup under lush trees, and a terrace with unrivalled views of the Dubai Fountains.

Those who love ribs will without a doubt relish every bite of their finger-licking good offerings. The menu comprises meat from New Zealand and Australia, but what their best known for is their ribs, signature steak and free-range lamb and chicken. To begin our meal, we shared the highly recommended flash-grilled scallops with peri peri sauce that were quite meaty and juicy, alongside loaded potato skins with beef trinchado (strips marinated with garlic and peri-peri sauce). Being half Portuguese I had to order the peri peri chicken and opted for the chicken combo with beef ribs. The ribs were tender to the bone, doused in a barbecue sauce, while the chicken was cooked just the way I like – with a light crisp skin on the outside, and incredibly

tender on the inside. Luckily for families, the portions are massive. To be honest, the next time we dine there we’ll probably order one appetizer and leave more space for the Malva pudding dessert - a divine treat to end your meal with. The warm spongy cake is large enough for two to share, served with hot caramel, custard and a scoop of ice cream. Details: +9714 283 1339

MOOMBAI & CO.

Indian-food lovers will enjoy a trip to this eatery at The H, that serves up vintage Indian vibes, and dishes that pay tribute to the city’s rich culture and heritage. Sit out on the colourful terrace that’s decked with film posters and fairy lights. The vibrant menu begins with the restaurant’s story, followed by an extensive selection of dishes, beverages, and horoscopes for a fun read while you wait for your meal. A tangy shot to aid digestion is served before a meal – since Indian dishes can be quite heavy – and we highly recommend trying the hari mirch ka jhinga (jumbo prawns). The prawns are marinated on an open charcoal fire, and are exceptionally juicy, flavoured with a chilly and garlic mix. If you prefer a crunchy bite to start the meal, try the chunky fried black pepper and pimento calamari served on a buttered kulcha (flatbread). For mains, the Sali marghi – voted one of the top 50 dishes in Dubai – was hands-down one of our favourites. Potatoes are shredded to resemble straw and placed on top of a rich chicken curry that’s best scooped up with hot garlic and cheese naan.

Their signature black dal is another one to try, featuring a thick mixture of black lentils slow-cooked in cream, butter and tomatoes. If you love mixing your curry with rice, try the chicken berry biryani, a Parsi special featuring aromatic long grain basmati rice with berries and tender pieces of chicken. End with either warm mini baked gulab jamuns, or Bhapa doi (rose-flavoured steamed yoghurt with saffron dust and berries) – great for those who want to pack in probiotics once done. Tried & Tested Pamper yourself and enjoy ‘me-time’ at the spa

Spa Intercontinental, InterContinental Dubai Festival City

The treatment: Velvet Nights package for two (two-hours)

The verdict: If you and your partner are in dire need of a body massage, or just want to spend quality time together without the children, there’s no better way to do so than with a spa treatment in the couple’s suite. Ladies who have been trying to get their man to get a full body polish – just to let him know what smooth, silky skin feels like – this is your chance. The treatment begins with a sugar body polish, where your entire body is scrubbed down with a mixture of flowers, sugar and oil to slough off dead skin cells and reveal soft, radiant and supple skin. This is followed by a 30-minutes jacuzzi rose milk bath to wash off the scrub and nourish your skin, while you and your partner unwind and chat as the jets release muscle tension. The finale is an invigorating body massage with a blend of exotic oils. My partner and I chose deep pressure and woke up absolutely refreshed. The masseuse focuses on long strokes by pushing away knots with her elbows. The deep rhythmic pressure massage revives sore muscles, and while it may ache that minute or even a few hours later, you are in for a treat the next morning. My partner and I could move our shoulders freely, without any tension in the upper back, making the week ahead a delight. Details: Dhs1,960 for two. Contact +9714 701 1257

Nova Clinic by Aesthetics The treatment: HydraFacial + Oxygen treatment The verdict: This airy clinic isn’t your typical salon-style haunt for facials. Yet, the results are beyond astonishing. If you’re rushed for time and need a quick fix for your skin – approximately 30 minutes – this stand-alone clinic in Jumeirah is the one to hotfoot too. The no-frills facial is tailored to your skin’s requirements, deep-cleansing each layer to reveal fresh, rejuvenated skin. My therapist Lisa knew exactly what my skin desired: cleansing, a little blackhead extraction, and a smearing of good-for-your-skin acids to target pigmentation. Lisa went over my skin with a suction pipe to exfoliate and slough off dead skin cells instantly. Once the skin was cleansed, a face

mask was placed on for 10-15 minutes, followed by serums that were applied to the skin with a similar pipe. If you’re worried about fine lines and wrinkles, or need an added boost for a big event, I highly recommend the Oxygen treatment after the facial. A cool breeze hits your skin with serums containing hyaluronic acid, a potent mixture of vitamins and antioxidants and botanical brighteners to even out your skin tone. Lisa carefully went over the undereye area several times to brighten dark eye circles and tackle fine lines and wrinkles. Perhaps the best part about both these treatments is that it is great for all skin types, and doesn’t cause any irritation or inflammation, so you’re good to meet the ladies soon after. MONEY MATTERS:

Investing In A Home Melissa Bayik, Head of Brand at Arada shares her top tips and things to keep in mind before purchasing a house

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2019 | 61

good living It comes as no surprise that buying a home is one of the most significant events of your life. For many people, it’s the biggest financial investment they will make in their lifetime and with proper financial planning, it shouldn’t be the last. Whether you just got married, or a middle-aged mother with children, buying your first home is a decision that should be carefully assessed. Arguably, the most important stage in that the process comes before signing the dotted line. During this time, you should focus on finalising the purchase with the confidence that you’ve made a sound decision. If you are currently considering owning your first home, keep these tips in mind. Assess your financial capabilities and plan ahead Before committing to a new home, it is important that you don’t make any big purchases up to six months prior – your bank needs to know that you have the cashflow and are eligible for a mortgage. Planning also helps you reduce the period during which you will have to pay up interest rate on your principal – so saving early on towards the down payment makes a big difference. It is extremely important that you build a prospective financial plan and get enough visibility on your income and expenses – now and in the future. Start by breaking down your monthly earnings, spending and savings; your numbers are great indicators of what you can invest, so let them be your guide as to whether you are able to buy a onebedroom apartment or a two-bedroom villa. Also, don’t stay fixated on the property price; make sure to take into accounts other costs like maintenance and service charges. For example, you may want to choose a property where service charges are offered for free for the first year. As a rule of thumb, consider mortgage payments that wouldn’t exceed one third of your gross income. More importantly, you don’t need to use up all the mortgage your bank approves – stick to how much you will need. Do your homework To minimise risks, it is a fundamental to do some research about your developer and ensure that it enjoys a credible reputation in the market from build quality to timely delivery. A good indicator is

one that often communicates about the project’s latest updates and shares key milestones with investors. Some key pointers to keep in mind when looking into a developer is find out who they are, if they’ve been associated with trusted brands, and their track record with brokers and existing buyers. Most information can be found online and on the developer’s website. Make your first home investment worthwhile When shopping for your first home, it is recommended to adopt a forward-

62 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

thinking mindset by looking into future returns on your investment. If your aim is to use the property for investment purposes, your priority should be on generating the highest ROI possible given your means and available options. There are diverse factors impacting ROI including the neighborhood, development, future projects in the area; be sure to study them all. Most importantly, buy what fits your needs. That said, it is crucial that you don’t buy for your present life. Instead, think about the future and buy accordingly. If you are planning to have a family for

example, you may want to consider a bigger property, and a community that offers green spaces and parks, schools, hospitals, hotels, and entertainment options. Pick a community, not just a property Potential buyers are often consumed with the space of the home, the property’s worth and its underlying facilities leaving little room for the overall community. It is essential to assess the quality of life your family will have years after settling into the home. Also, tenants often look

at the community, not just the property. As such, choosing the right community can translate into higher returns. Ask yourself: what developments are planned for the area which would positively or negatively impact the value of your investment property? Is it a high-growth area or one that is currently in decline? It is imperative to factor in other elements such as whether the community fosters a family-friendly environment and if there is proximity to facilities, schools, supermarkets, retail shopping centers and outdoor spaces. Take our company

for example, it is currently developing Sharjah’s biggest-ever development and its’ fastest selling community, Aljada, which comprises considerable retail, leisure and entertainment options, in addition to a wide range of residential and commercial offerings. A home is more than bricks and mortar; it is the place where you will create memories with your family and friends. Buying your first home is even more special so, remember to factor in the things that are of value to you, your family and your future.
