WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE
Expecting About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum June
Priyanka Porwal
actor and mum to a one-month old baby boy 14 | APRIL 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
I am an actor by profession and most of the acting projects wean off with the onset of Ramadan and summer. With free time on my hands, I decided to get a relief from the Dubai heat and go back to stay with my folks in India. My cousin was getting married in the beautiful city of Udaipur in July, which I was really excited about, couple of weeks in my hometown of Raipur would give me enough time to relax and shop for the wedding. As my husband and I have been actively trying to have a baby, I kept an eye on my periods for a while. Few days into my holiday, I realized I am late. I had no signs of early pregnancy like nausea, etc, so I was skeptical but still had the anxiety when I took the home pregnancy test. When you take the pregnancy test, you have to wait for 15 minutes to let the result be clear on the test kit. Those 15 minutes feel like 15 hours and I felt the palpitations like I was waiting on the results of this huge exam. As the 15 minutes passed and I craned my neck to look at the test, it showed two lines! I was ecstatic, I was going to be a mother. I immediately called my husband who just screamed with joy. We both however were a little cautious in sharing the news as I had a chemical pregnancy (early pregnancy loss that occurs shortly after implantation) that led to a miscarriage few months prior. To avoid any disappointment, I got periodic blood tests done through our family doctor and she approved growth of my BETA HCG levels that confirmed my pregnancy.
July
With this exciting news, comes the travel restriction. My folks didn’t allow me to travel for one month and I had to miss the wedding. Moreover, I couldn’t reveal the news till I was three months pregnant,
so I had to make various excuses when everybody wondered why I didn’t turn up for the wedding. Rest of the month was amazing as everybody at home pampered me with sumptuous food and doses of advice on ‘don’t eat banana and sprouts; don’t lift weights, etc.’
August
My husband and I had planned a vacation in Netherlands and Belgium for a couple of weeks in late August. I was super excited to travel but also was concerned whether I could go or not. As soon as I was back in Dubai, I also had to choose my doctor and all my friends recommended Dr Janaki at Mediclinic Welcare Hospital. The hospital was almost an hour’s ride from my home in JLT, but it’s important to have a doctor you can put your complete trust on for peace of mind. I met her and she gave us the green light for the travel. What an amazing time we had in Europe! In a way we celebrated our babymoon a little early. My brother and sis in law joined us too and we revealed our big news. As soon as we came back from the vacation, I had my Nuchal Translucency scan that checks for chances of the baby having down syndrome. Thankfully, the results were normal.
September
I was starting to show up and was finding it difficult to hide it during my auditions. Somehow, I managed to work till October. Most pregnant women have morning sickness, I started having bouts of evening sickness. My sense of smell went into hyper mode where I would just keep my nose covered most of the evening as any smell could trigger my nausea. I was keen to know more about what to expect during this period so I started with babycenter.com - I couldn’t recommend this site more, as it gives you weekly updates on what’s going on inside your tummy and how to prepare for any problems. Within the site, there are forums where expecting moms across the world share their experiences and advice that really proved very useful especially for a first time mum like me.
October
Second trimester brings a lot of joy as now you are in a safer space considering the viability of your pregnancy. The fifth month also brings the anomaly scan that checks if your baby is developing normally. This test reveals the gender of the baby so both of us were very excited. We both wanted
a girl and had a gut feeling about it. When we went into the scan, I told the doctor that I was expecting a baby girl. But nature had other plans, and then the doctor with a straight face pointed at the screen and said, ‘it’s a boy’ and my husband was like ‘where’? It was so funny that he couldn’t figure it out for at least a minute.
November
This month brought great weather and a baby shower. My husband threw me the most amazing baby shower on our building’s rooftop, amongst our close friends. As we wanted it to be a gender reveal party, the theme was a mix of pink and blue with some great decoration from theperfectgift. ae. It was such a happy feeling to share this moment with my loved ones and be showered with so many gifts.
December
Officially in my third trimester, I was now scheduled to meet our doctor every two weeks. My due date was fixed as March 2nd and I was ballooning up. I had some good clothes delivered to me from Destination Maternity (highly recommended) that accommodated my growing body. I also caught up with all my favorite foods like pani puri and Indian chaat as I dreaded being deprived of them after delivering. Most of the month I was free, which I invested in catching up on Netflix, indulging in hot baths and spa treatments and reading multiple books on pregnancy.
January
A whole lot of anxiety as I felt unprepared and the baby was due to arrive soon. I went into hyper shopping mode at Babyshop and Mothercare for clothes, stroller, bathing stuff and what not. I also started attending workshops like mypregnancyarabia for free advice on nursing, delivery and free samples. Mediclinic also arranged for a full day antenatal class for my husband and I, that gave us options on birthing, pain management during delivery and also taught us about changing diapers and swaddling the baby. I would highly recommend these classes for first time mums.
February
The due date was now a countdown. I wanted a normal delivery, so I was walking three to four kilometres every day, doing yoga and exercising on a medicinal ball. My doctor’s visits were now weekly and during my third scan my doctor mentioned that my amniotic fluid was on the lower normal side. In the 37th week, the doctor also calculated my Bishop score and told me that I was 2cm dilated! Along with lower amniotic fluid and the Bishop score, I was told that I would be induced on February 18th to have a baby. The excitement was heightened. I preponed my mother-in-law’s visit to the 15th and went into the hospital on 17th midnight to come back with my beautiful baby, who we named Yuvaan, 24 hours later. 24 HOURS
in the life of a Mumpreneur 6:15AM–7:15AM
day before I do anything else. The day can only get better then, right? Gone are the days of hitting the snooze button; it is all systems go from the minute I wake up with two boys – a 6-year-old and a 16-month-old – to get ready for school, while getting myself ready for work. It is probably the most chaotic time of my day, but there is some method to the madness, and I rely heavily on my husband to get the kids ready on days when I have important meetings and need to focus on myself.
7:15–8AM
11AM
Wrong! A few hours into the day and I have multiple issues to deal with already. From a client crisis that needs to be resolved urgently, to a key team member calling in sick, to an exciting new business brief that’s landed at my desk with a deadline of yesterday. I call these issues, but really, it’s the most exciting thing about working at a communications agency – no two days are the same and you never know what to expect from one hour to the next. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I drop my older son off to school, listening to him talk non-stop on the way. I love this time we have together as most other times the younger one can be quite demanding. So while most parents may wish away the school rush/traffic, I welcome it as I get a bit of extra time to bond with my older son. My husband drops the little one off at daycare.
8AM
I arrive at work, ready to face the day. Usually bring breakfast in with me and have a bite while I catch up on emails, read the headlines and plan my day. Love getting in earlier than most of the team and I make sure I ‘swallow my frog’ first thing – tackle the most challenging action for the 16 | APRIL 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
I suddenly realise half the day is done already, grab my laptop and breast pump and head to the one conference room we can lock. I am fortunate enough to work at a place where working mums are provided with comfort and privacy to express milk. I usually spend around 20 minutes in there, while enjoying some peace and quiet to review content that my team has written, or respond to emails I’ve flagged, away from the noise of the main area. A hands-free pumping bra is truly life-changing and allows me to work as usual while ensuring my baby has his milk sorted for the next day.

proposal with our head of digital to make sure it resonates with the prospect’s target audiences across all channels.
4:30PM
I’m always ready to listen then. Sometimes my husband is home around this time and joins in the fun, else I see him once the kids are in bed.
7PM
Either I read a book, or we make up stories, depending on how tired the kids are. My older son goes to bed and I breastfeed my toddler before putting him down for the night. Have some lunch with a few of my colleagues in our little kitchenette area. Great to catch up with the team on nonwork stuff, whether it is chatting about what someone’s cat did the previous day, or swapping baby stories with the other mums at work. I try my best to take a break away from my desk/laptop at lunch time as it helps me re-energize for the rest of the day. I also step out for a walk around the block at some point during the day when the weather allows it – clearly not something we can do once the hot Dubai summer sets in!
2:30PM
Head to a client meeting to discuss progress on an exciting campaign and lock down next steps to make sure we get the right results and align expectations. Run an impromptu brainstorm on how to get everyone talking about their latest business offering, whether it is through a brand revamp, social media engagement, or creating interesting story angles for the media. The team leaves the meeting buzzing with ideas
3:30PM
Head back to the conference room for another pumping session. Work on a proposal I’ve been meaning to look at for a while, focusing on getting the strategy just right. Make a note to discuss the
7:30PM I leave for the day and head to daycare to pick up my younger son. The older one is already home from school – either my husband or our driver will have picked him up at 3pm – I think it’s next to impossible to have a career and a family without relying on help, so for some elements you’re alright to outsource. Play some of my favourite tunes as I unwind and enjoy my only real ‘alone time’ of the day.
5PM
Reach daycare and my toddler runs into my arms. This is one of my favourite moments of any day. I enjoy the cuddles for a minute or two before strapping him into his car seat and driving us home.
5:15 – 7PM
I spend every minute of this time with my boys. My helper has already gotten dinner ready – I am so grateful for the support – and I sit with my kids at the dinner table and catch up with them as they eat. We then either play silly games (ninja transformers meet alien dinosaurs) or play some music and have a dance-off. I then take the kids for a bath. I find my older son tells me so much about his day, friends, what happened in school at bathtime, so
Go out for a walk/run to get some exercise in and use this time to call my close friends for a quick catch up. I take whatever time I get to maintain a semblance of a social life given my hectic routine.
8:30PM
I have dinner with my hubby while we swap stories about our day and plan the next day/week ahead with my helper. Sometimes we have to set multiple calendar reminders for concerts, sports days, vaccinations etc so we don’t forget! I also rely heavily on the school mums whatsapp group to remind me of what’s happening in school.
9PM – 10:30PM
Either we watch a show/movie on Netflix, or I get the laptop and catch up on a few bits of work I didn’t get the chance to work on during the day. I do try to limit working at night though as I’m definitely not my most productive at that time. Head to bed, wondering if I will get more than two to three hours at a stretch or not as my toddler is a notoriously poor sleeper. Some nights are worse than others of course, and he is usually at his worst the day before I have an important presentation to make. I hope for at least four full hours before I wake up and do it all over again. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | APRIL 2019 | 17

#THIS IS PARENTHOOD Have you ever felt like you were not doing enough to fit the ‘picture perfect’ mummy image that is portrayed on social media? Well you are not alone, parents across the world agree and a new project is looking to change this
With seven in ten parents globally wishing there were more honest representations of parenting in culture and on social media, today WaterWipes, the world’s purest baby wipes, launches the #ThisIsParenthood project in partnership with 86 real parents, plus influencers and like-minded organisations from across the world. The project aims to counter a culture of perfect parenting, by documenting the realities through a uniquely honest lens and start a more open and honest conversation around parenthood that inspires self-belief in Mums and Dads across the world. A new global study conducted by WaterWipes looked into the realities of parenting. In the UAE the brand surveyed 1,000 parents with children aged 3 and
under and the statistics were alarming. The research showed that over half of parents feel like they are failing during their first year of parenthood. There is a lack of honesty around parenting – with parents themselves struggling to be honest about their journey through fear of judgment. The study also revealed that parents wish there was more honesty in the representation of parenthood in culture and amongst parents themselves, with the equivalent of 67.6 million parents globally feeling as though they cannot relate to the parenting images they see on social media, as stated in a UN report. Despite having a network around them, parents often feel alone & unable to MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | APRIL 2019 | 21

share their struggles. Whilst two thirds of mums and dads in the UAE felt most supported by their partner during their first year of parenthood, interestingly, a third felt as though their partner didn’t really understand them once their baby was born. On top of this, half of parents in the UAE feel as though they have to put on a brave face in front of their support network (family, friends) rather than be honest with their struggles. “The global research speaks for itself – parents are feeling disempowered by the portrayal of picture-perfect parenting and are crying out for more honesty. As a company that stands for honesty – in our products, our advertising and everything we do – we want to change this. We hope

Self that mums and dads across the world will feel inspired to join us in this project and share their #ThisIsParenthood journey, so that together we can change the conversation for the better,” says Cathy Kidd, VP Marketing at WaterWipes. #ThisIsParenthood is a message to all parents, one intended to get parents to believe in themselves by celebrating
the imperfectly perfect. It hopes to change the game by breaking the perfect parenting stereotypes that exist, affecting meaningful change and speaking to parents in a uniquely eyeto-eye way. Through this, WaterWipes hope to empower mums & dads with self-belief and tackle the root of the insecurities commonly felt in the first year of parenthood.

About WaterWipes WaterWipes, the world’s purest baby wipes with just two added ingredients, were created by founder Edward McCloskey after his newborn daughter suffered with bad nappy rash. After an extensive search he couldn’t find a baby wipe that didn’t contain chemicals or other ingredients that would’ve been too harsh for her sensitive skin, so he decided to make his own. Many years later and after a lot of hard work, testing, and scientific research, WaterWipes were born.
Pure, gentle and safe for the most delicate skin but in the convenience of a baby wipe, WaterWipes are made with 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract. They are a suitable alternative to cotton wool and water. WaterWipes are the only baby wipe approved by Allergy UK and the French Association for the Prevention of Allergies as well as to get the National Eczema Association of America’s seal of acceptance. WaterWipes are recommended by midwives* for nappy rash or skin allergies.

A LESSON IN
HEALTHY COMPETITION At Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba, there’s more to PE lessons than just the physical benefits
Access to inclusive and diverse physical activity and sporting opportunities inspires lifelong learning and enthusiasm and, in PE lessons, the foundations for this are already being built in your child’s FS years when play is a favourite way of learning.
personal goals whilst learning and developing new skills. Our House Sports Days at Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba embody the spirit of healthy competition by giving children the opportunity to represent their respective house alongside and against their peers in a positive setting, and develop invaluable teamwork skills.
As a child’s journey along their sporting pathway continues, in nurturing their development as well-rounded individuals it’s essential to occasionally expose them to the ups and downs of ‘healthy competition’ while maintaining a fun, positive and stimulating environment. Events like House Sports Days are a fantastic opportunity to do just that.
Year 1 and 2 House Sports are all about co-operative team games and developing a child’s critical social skills through interaction, plus the value of hard work, fair play and self-efficacy. The more individual nature of the Years 3 to 6 Sports Day additionally builds on a child’s inner determination and drive to better their performances in each technical athletic discipline.

FOUNDATIONS FOR FLOURISHING
Emma Freese, Head of Positive Education at Regent International School gives us an account of her day while revealing how students at the school have taken ownership of their mental wellbeing 26 | APRIL 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
“How was your day?” we ask. “Fine” is the reply we always get. Do you find this response all too familiar at the end of the school day? Would you like new ways to engage with your children in order to get better answers? At Regent International School, a group of pupils have taken it upon them to create a ‘Wellbeing Wood’ wall, so that children are aware of their mental health and take a more positive approach to school and life the minute they look at it. The idea of these questions/ suggestions – on the wall – is to allow children to deepen their self-awareness, build their self-esteem and grow their resilience. You can try some of these strategies while having fun at the same time. On a daily basis, Mrs. Freese, Head of Positive Education, meets with a group of students known as “The Positivity Patrol” to help develop strategies for promoting positive mental health. In one conversation, she recently asked them to help her with a blank wall outside her office that called for an interactive display. She requested an interactive display in order to provide a safe space for pupils to take ownership of their mental health whilst they might be waiting to speak with her, the school counsellor. The meeting saw them coming to the conclusion of crafting a naturallooking space. The ‘Wellbeing Wood’ pathway that was created is based mostly around the Positive Psychology train of thought on PERMAH. The framework comes from Professor Martin Seligman, one of the world’s leading researchers in positive psychology and human flourishing, who suggests that our wellbeing is a result of having Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment. Other researchers believe that health is a contributing factor as well (exercising, eating well, good hygiene and enough sleep.) As a result, children are asked to start at the beginning of the path way and move through all eighteen steps. There are fun moves to accompany each fact that correlates with positive psychology. One favourite with the pupils is that gratitude makes us happier. The move to accompany this is the classic rub your belly and pat your head at the same time (trickier than it sounds!) Another step asks the students to floss as they understand the importance of regular exercise, or dab as they think about their next personal target.
Parents can easily use these methods at home as they ask their children about their day. Ask them how they showed kindness that day, how their day went, or what their next goal or target is. If you share your own answer to these questions, it is likely that your relationship and bond will strengthen further. Mrs. Emma Freese says, “The response to the Wellbeing Wood has been phenomenal. Pupils love the fact that they
can play a game to support their own mental health and adore the fun moves associated with each fact. They also appreciate the natural look of the space.” As RIS joins all schools in Dubai on a journey to live in one of the top five happiest countries in the world – we encourage you to take a little time in nature, ask insightful questions from your loved ones, and take a moment to look after your own wellbeing. DOES YOUR CHILD NEED
expert help?
Dr. Shatha Al Nassar gives us a tour of Head Start Speech Therapy Center at Mirdif 35, where they cater to children of all ages, bringing them up to the required academic level with their speech and communication skills MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MARCH 2019 | 31
health Established in 2015, Dr. Shatha Al Nassar initially opened the centre just to consult and guide parents. “I found plenty of misdiagnosis here in the UAE and realised many kids didn’t receive what was required, and therapy wasn’t up to par with international standards. 90 per cent of the parents who come here have had an issue with their previous therapist or are confused about what needs to be done to make their children better,” she says. Little did she know, that few months down the line she would launch a full-fledge centre to cater to the high demand of special services across the spectrum. At the moment, the centre caters to over 100 children - mainly Arab and Indian – with one-on-one sessions held daily. As we walk around the premises, Dr. Shatha briefs us on the process of this inviting family-friendly centre. The journey begins at the consultation area, where parents meet with the in-house expert to discuss their child’s issues when it comes to speech, language and motor skill difficulties. Bright colours with leafy prints adorn the walls, keeping parents and children calm as they speak to the consultant. “Most parents come here absolutely frustrated from not getting any results and feel anxious as they are expecting something different. This area makes them feel positive, as they come to you seeking help, to get benefits out of therapy,” says Dr. Shatha. She also goes on to explain that parents can sometimes come in with a negative experience, so the area has to be cosy and welcoming. “We are here to listen and help.” We make our way to the next room with illustrations, shapes and arrows for children to understand. Once parents complete their consultation, they are given a plan for their kids, advising them on what their child needs to develop successfully. The sessions take place in the designated room, with 45-minutes allocated for each child, per zone. First of is the Speech Therapy Room for children who have difficulties understanding and expressing
themselves. It’s hard for children to comprehend the idea behind the room, which is why posters are placed across the wall with words and drawings to help them understand. A poster that indicates children need to avoid hitting, pinching, biting, and screaming, teaches them how to better express themselves while correcting behavioral issues. “They can be aggressive at first, because they can’t talk so they don’t know how to express themselves. Parents don’t understand them, so when the kids start therapy, they learn that they aren’t supposed to do these things, and that’s when they start to bond with their parents.” The other
32 | MARCH 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
speech therapy room is where Dr. Shatha will soon be launching group sessions to develop a curriculum for nursery, KG and grade 1. “This is more for early intervention. For example, if you have a child who is three-years old, but their speech is delayed and on the level of a one-year old. We will introduce something that is suitable for the child’s age, where we prepare them for their age and school.” The next stop is the calm, dim-lit sensory room that is mostly for autistic children and anyone who needs to develop their senses. Children can have issues with touch, smell and
textures, and can touch and feel backlit letters across a colourful wall while learning at the same time. Various other activities take place in the room to help them improve their sensory issues in a stimulating environment. At the end, children get to choose different actions from posters on a wall: hug, nudge, high five, so that they learn how to express and react. Our last stop is the occupational therapy room which focuses on hand functions, allowing them to be independent and ready for school and life. “Sometimes a three-year old can’t open a book, hold a pen, or draw. If there is a delay in their motor skills, we send them for supportive occupational therapy,” says Dr. Shatha. At the centre, they teach and support with motor skills, understanding, and their senses. “We work on the whole component, so they aren’t lacking any skills for their age.” The room also features a large swing net where they can relax and calm their mind.
“
For those interested in registering their children, Dr. Shatha mentions the process takes a minimum of four months, for mild cases, and up to one year or longer for children who need serious development. Currently, the centre treats kids across the spectrum, with autism, ADHD, brain damage, feeding and sensory issues. “We treat the major things: communication, sensory and motor issues.”
The process takes a minimum of four months, for mild cases, and up to one year or longer for children who need serious development.
In the future, the centre will be evolving into a rehabilitation centre which includes a nutritionist, neurologist, as most kids who have difficulties in understanding are malnourished as they don’t know how to ask for food, and the mums aren’t aware sometimes either. We need them to be physically and mentally strong when they come in, if they have to get better. That’s why we sometimes have shadows in the room as well, to hold up kids who are weak and lethargic.

STEM CELL THERAPY
Dr. Steven Victor, a leader in Regenerative Medicine at ReGen Medical in New York City – with a treatment facility at Emirates Hospital in Dubai – discusses why parents should look into saving their baby’s stem cells instead of just the umbilical cord blood at birth
38 | APRIL 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
WHAT ARE STEM CELLS? Cells that provide new cells in place of the dead ones are known as stem cells. These are primitive, non-specialized cells, which have enormous potential for multiplication and an ability to convert into specialised cells to form tissue. Due to its unique abilities, stem cells have been used in medicine for years to rebuild or replace damaged cells. Stem cells can be found, for example, in umbilical cord blood, in bone marrow, or in peripheral blood collected from donors.
THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE Stem cells are collected from a newborn baby’s umbilical cord blood in a safe and painless process. A sample of the umbilical cord blood is then sent to the laboratory, undergoes processing and gets frozen in cryogenic storage tanks for long-term preservation. Dr. Victor tells us “in the US, saving the baby’s umbilical cord blood has been a controversial topic in the health industry, and the number of mums doing so has decreased significantly, since bone and adipose stem cells are now available and have a much wider use for diseases.” Adipose stem cells are derived from the capillaries in the patient’s own fat cells. “The major use of cord blood stem cells is for blood diseases and immunological disorders – everything else is only speculative. The stem cells in cord blood are only hematopoietic (from the blood) stem cells and can only turn into blood
“
of other diseases that affect a patient’s blood system. 2018 saw Dr. Victor open a dedicated centre at Emirates Hospital, Jumeirah, becoming the first establishment to receive approval from the Dubai Health Authority. As we talk about the safety element, Dr. Victor states, “Stem cell therapy is safe, if used for the same person in the future. If you try to use it for another person there could be major issues. It is not recommended for use on others, unless it is life-saving and there is no other choice. A graft vs host reaction can occur, and it could be life threating.” Dr. Victor has performed more than 600 stem cell therapy treatments with positive outcomes for various diseases of unmet clinical needs and cosmetic indications, in the US.

wider use for diseases
“
There are several different types of stem cell therapies depending on the treatment and benefit you require and are seeking. The first, is to save the umbilical cord blood at birth. These stem cells are hematopoietic (blood) stem cells and can only turn into blood, so the uses for treatments are rather limited. The second, is to use the baby’s own stem cells from the capillaries in the fat tissue or bone marrow throughout their lifetime. “These stem cells are pluripotent and can be used to treat diseases like autism, blood diseases, diabetes and orthopedic problems,” says Dr. Steven Victor, a leader in Regenerative Medicine at ReGen Medical in New York City.
cells. These are not pluripotent like bone marrow or adipose stem cells,” goes on to say. Over the years, stem cell therapy and regenerative medical center have been quite the hot topic as it is often used to treat leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, as well as a range
For parents who are still contemplating saving the umbilical cord blood, Dr. Victor says they should be conscious of what was posted in the American Academy of Pediatrics a few years ago. “Physicians should be aware of the unsubstantiated claims of private cord blood banks, made to future parents, that promise to insure infants or family members against serious illnesses in the future by use of the stem cells contained in cord blood. Private storage of cord blood as 'biological insurance' is unwise, unless there is a family member with a current or potential need to undergo a stem cell transplantation.” The American Academy of Pediatrics also notes that the odds of using a person's own cord blood is 1 in 200,000. “One fact that is worth mentioning, is that we do not know exactly how long the umbilical cord stem cells can be stored before they lose their effectiveness. As for now, one theory states that it is good for seven years. But, that’s just one theory.” To summarize, he advises parents that isn’t vital to save their child’s umbilical cord blood in this day and age, since technology has advanced. If stem cells are needed, it is easy to harvest fresh pluripotent stem cells that have a wider range of uses for diseases. Speaking from the perspective of a medical expert in the USA, Dr. Victor ends by telling us there are other beneficial alternatives.

Birthing Options IN THE UAE
Traditional hospital births are gradually being replaced with safe and stress-free methods to make the experience pleasurable. If you are a mum-to-be, here are a few alternate methods to consider
Water birth
Known to reduce labour pain by about 70 per cent, the process involves mums giving birth in a large tub of warm water, typically around 35-37 degrees Celsius, to match the body temperature. Women sit in a position they are most comfortable with, while the water relaxes their muscles, releases endorphins and thereby enables a safe and stress-free delivery. Water also helps to relax the pelvic floor muscles and soften the perineum, as a result, reducing the risk of tearing. Al Zahra Private Hospital and Mediclinic City Hospital offer water births.
40 | APRIL 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Hypnobirthing
This philosophy is based on the belief that birth is natural, normal and a healthy body function, and that women are able to experience birth calmly and without excruciating pain. One of the advantages is the elimination of drugs and pain during delivery. So, who is hypnobirthing for? The ideal candidate is just about anyone, but specifically women who are fearful of birth. The process includes exploration and the release of fear before birth, through a series of sessions, so that the mum can relax during the delivery. There are various types of hypnotherapy available in the UAE, but the most well-known are the HypnoBirthing and EasiBirthing programmes. Jasmine Collins is a well-known hypnotherapist and co-founder of loveparentinguae.com.
Doula birth
A doula, also known as a birth companion or post-birth supporter, is a non-medical person who assists a person before, during, or after childbirth. The doula does not replace the midwife clinically, or takes over the husband’s position, but is there to meet with the parents for prepartum consultation to consider birth plans, preferences, and pain management techniques. The doula also helps during the post-partum phase, with breastfeeding, sleep, and baby yoga and the massage. The advantage of having a doula, to parents, is that there is constant support psychologically as well as physically. Find your doula and support packages on littlefeathercollective.com

ESSENTIALS Three to Try
The aroma, texture and colour of the Filorga NCEF-Night Mask is absolutely divine. The product promises to reveal a rejuvenating effect in just seven nights, making your skin look as though you have had plenty of sleep – ideal for mums. The night cream isn’t just a moisturizer, the mask combats lack of sleep through its action on melatonin and maximizes the benefits of sleep by the same active ingredients as those used in mesotherapy injections, penetrating the skin for super-activated regeneration overnight. The mask is also a plumping booster, thanks to hyaluronic acid and collagen, naturally detoxifies your skin while you sleep with ingredients such as red indigo, used in Ayurvedic medicine. It also suppresses production of the stress hormone, cortisol, and triggers synthesis of B-endorphin, an opiod neuropeptide. Simultaneously, it stimulates genes engaged in antioxidant processes to help protect the skin from damage. Dhs360 at Boots and Bin Sina pharmacies

If you’re after that youthful glow with a natural beauty product, try the Rose Diamond Cream from The Organic Pharmacy. Kylie Minogue recently revealed it was her best kept skincare secret until date. What does it contain? The premium cream features the first press essence from hand-picked, organic Persian roses, harvested from a tiny village nestled in the Persian mountains. Cultivated at a high altitude, the roses produce much higher levels of anti-inflammatory extracts that ward off wrinkles and visible lines. The cream also contains diamond powder, safflower, rosehip oil, hibiscus, linseed and evening primrose that work together to strengthen the skin’s barrier and make it soft while improving elasticity. The Organic Pharmacy Rose Diamond cream is priced at Dhs1,500 and available at Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah, Zabeel House by Jumeirah@ The Greens and Beautifulbrands.ae

Tried & Tested Pamper yourself and enjoy ‘me-time’ at the spa
PICO Genesis, EuroMed Clinic Known as the “20-minute miracle” PICO Genesis is a laser treatment that destroys the pigment in skin, leaving you with an even complexion and instant glow. Before the non-thermal procedure begins, emla (numbing cream) is applied on to avoid any discomfort during the treatment. Once my skin was numb, I was taken to my aesthetician Rebecca Treston’s room – the only expert qualified to carry out this treatment – to lay back on a chair and relax. Soon after, picosecond pulses went along my face in various directions, to not only remove pigmentation but also rejuvenate deep layers of the skin without causing damage to the tissue. As the ultra-short energy pulses are felt ever-so-slightly on the skin – suitable for those with low pain threshold – Rebecca tells me the procedure is great for anyone who has age spots, melasma, freckles, deep acne marks, hyperpigmentation and sun damage. The laser also helps build collagen, and since there were visually no marks or harsh dots on the skin, I didn’t need any downtime after the treatment. The treatment is similar to a facial in a way, really just remodeling the upper dermis to give you radiance and a more uniform complexion. To cool the skin down, a thick rubber-like mask is applied on for 10-15 minutes, letting you snooze for a bit – I desperately needed a power nap. The actual results were noticeable after two to three days - hyperpigmentation near my eyes had been cleared out by this point, and my skin was free from any brown spots, making it look fresh and clear. Dhs2,500 per session. Visit @rebeccatreston on Instagram for before and after images of the treatment. Contact +971 4 394 5422
Hot stones massage,
The Spa, Address Boulevard
Recommended for those struggling with muscular aches and discomforts, the sedative effects of hot stones are said to assure deep relaxation while alleviating chronic pain and stress.
I’m booked in for a sixty-minute hot stones massage (my first ever) at The Spa, Address Boulevard, and arrive 15 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment time to make full use of the spa facilities. The treatment begins with a foot cleansing ritual, while I choose my massage oil of preference – I opt for amber, which is said to help calm the mind and enhance circulation. Once in position on the heated bed, my therapist, Menaka, lays a thin towel down the centre of my back, before placing a number of hot basalt stones – which are flat in shape and smooth to touch, down the length of my spine. Menaka then uses the amber oil to massage my legs using a medium pressure. She begins by using her hands,
before introducing the hot stones into her massaging technique, using a mixture of long strokes and circular motions. She then places the stones into my palms and leaves them there, before progressing to massage the rest of my body using the same format. The treatment also includes a head massage, and Menaka massages the hot stones into my neck and shoulders to loosen any tension, before applying the
amber oil to massage my scalp. Following the treatment, I head back to the relaxation room to enjoy a cup of jasmine tea. Menaka recommends leaving the oil to absorb for at least three hours; due to my appointment time, I sleep overnight in mine, and wake up the next morning feeling refreshed and relaxed for the day ahead. Dining In The City Hotspots ideal for all ages
RUE ROYALE, THE POINTE
This newly opened leisure destination on The Palm Jumeirah is great for lunch with the ladies, quick coffee catch-ups, or a relaxed dinner with your hubby. Rue Royale is the brainchild of two-Michelin star chef Mathieu Viannay and offers French fare in a fine dining setting. The menu showcases authentic French cuisine from the countries’ culinary capital Lyon, highlighting seafood and meat in creative combinations. We highly suggest
beginning with the king crab in a celery emulsion. The cold crab is meaty with caviar and jelly adding texture to this appetizing starter. If you have an adventurous palate, try the pate en croute; a mixture of farm chicken breast, veal, sweet bread, and foie gras presented as a slab. For the fish course, opt for the signature dish of fresh plump scallops in butter lemon confit. The flavours are simple, with the green pepper adding pungency
and interesting notes when paired with the spinach and sauce. The desserts are kind of the highlight at this eatery, with a special display for those who want to take home a cake or two as well. Order an espresso or tea and try the Lyon – Dubai; a chocoholic’s dream made with milk chocolate cream, salted caramel and pecan crunch, served with Madagascar vanilla ice cream. MORIMOTO,
RENAISSANCE DOWNTOWN This Friday brunch in Downtown is lively. Gather a few friends and head here for a laid-back Asian meal. The brunch begins at the sushi station where you can tuck into freshly-made maki rolls, sashimi, nigiri, ceviche, and yakisoba ramen bowls. You will want to head back for round two, but this time, stop by the poke station for the mouth-watering tuna and salmon bowls. You will be too full to move by this point, but worry not, mains are brought to the table and feature steak cooked to the temperature you prefer – we picked medium – along with miso cod, chicken, and fried rice. We polished the incredibly delectable miso cod in seconds and relished every bite of the seared steak with the fried rice. The cocktail menu features interesting concoctions, so do give it a go. As for desserts, you have to try the pudding that tastes similar to a lipsmacking banoffee pie, and the selection of sorbet and fruits from the large platter. Once done, head outdoors to dance to beats from the DJ while taking in unobstructed views of the Burj Khalifa. From Dhs350 per person. Contact +971512 5577 MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | APRIL 2019 | 55

DINING IN THE CITY
BEBABEL,
THE DUBAI MALL Nestled in the Fashion Avenue of the shopping mall is this expansive modern Lebanese bistro that serves contemporary fare with authentic flavours. The familyfriendly restaurant was packed the afternoon we dined there, both indoors – where your eyes meet the Parisian-café style décor with large mirrors across the walls and florals arrangements – and out on the terrace where you are greeted to the amazing Fountain display every hour. If you’re feeling peckish, try one of the dip and salad platters. We opted for the hummous, bulgur and okra, and absolutely loved the bulgur salad and hummous with freshly-baked qubz. The dishes are sharing-style so do try the beef shawarma tarha; a flatbread with incredibly juicy slices of meat, onions and rocket leaves, all topped with sumac. Need something a bit more substantial? Order the spicy potatoes, and a mixed grill featuring tender pieces of chicken and meat, with fries, garlic paste and a salad. We skipped desserts, but one we’ll be trying next time for sure is kunafa. If you do have visitors from out of town and need a venue to beat the mall rush while watching the fountain display and want to give them a taste of Arabic fare, we highly recommend this place. The portions are generous, and the menu is quite reasonably priced. Contact +9714 419 0950
GEALES,
LE ROYAL MERIDIEN If you’re craving British classics from home, this Saturday family brunch is not-to-bemissed. Children are kept entertained at the bouncy castle and craft corner where baby experts are on hand to manage them while you dine. The brunch is fairly relaxed with every course brought to the table. Begin with foie gras on brioche, cheesestuffed fried balls, and Welsh rarebit (melted cheese on toast), but do keep space for mains. The roast is at the centre of attention at this brunch and you will absolutely love it. Cooked to perfection, it’s served with the traditional Yorkshire pudding with gravy and veggies as sides. Don’t eat beef? Try the fried fish and chips or grilled chicken. There’s a set menu for children too, and they can order dishes 56 | APRIL 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
such as mac and Bolognese, nuggets, and more. The best part of the brunch for you – if you have a sweet tooth – and your children, will most definitely be the dessert room nestled at the back of the restaurant.
The room features various chocolate creations, cake, ice cream, sticky toffee pudding, eclairs, and plenty more. From Dhs295 for adults and Dhs150 per child.+9714 316 5500
