Hello Mum, Halfway through the year! This is the time of year I like to take a step back and plan for the year ahead. Mum, if you plan on doing the same, make sure organizing your time for the months ahead is on top of the list. To get more free time on your hands, turn to page 24 for a guide that will make your life easier. This issue focuses on everything related to summer. Discover ways to detect vertigo in children (page 31) this season, indoor play areas (page 36), summer camps (page 12) and a staycation in the capital (page 50). It’s important to make sure your children stay healthy and active during summer too. If you feel they are becoming lethargic or need a bit of a push academically, turn to page 38 for stimulating memory game ideas. We’ve introduced a Home & Garden section to bring you the best in home life, décor, gardening, and care for your little furry friends. This month, we touch upon topics including rug cleaning (page 59), heat stroke in pets (page 62), and what you should be planting in your backyard this month (page 64). For a fun activity with children, follow our step-by-step summer snack recipes (page 60). .

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE
Expecting About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be
MARCH March 6th and my first born has turned 1! He is officially a ‘man child’ and his gifts of booties, soft-toys and comforters have been replaced with dinosaurs, LEGO and a mini size sports car. I had always hoped to have a small age gap between my children and had a ‘gut’ feeling since Harrison was born that I would be expecting the second come his first birthday.
Lyndsey Carphin Global Director of Trade Marketing at HUDA BEAUTY
16 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
This feeling became reality as I took a pregnancy test the day after his party, not convinced my change in energy was a result of hosting 65 people and our villa transforming into a circus for the celebrations! The positive result surprised me even though we had been trying and was an even bigger surprise to my husband who received a message on his phone mid-meeting; a far cry from the effort I put into sharing the result with him on our first born. I wondered if the second child was already getting less attention. The doctor confirmed our pregnancy ahead of a friend’s
wedding in South Africa, by this point I was hugging the toilet seat four times a day with aggressive ‘morning, noon and night sickness’ now tasked with putting in an ‘Oscar performance’ at our friend’s wedding as we had to conceal the pregnancy. I later found out that half of the wedding party suspected as I wasn’t warming up the dance floor and instead in bed most evenings by 9pm.
APRIL This month honestly flew by; I remember when pregnant with Harrison I thought about pregnancy 24:7. I counted down the days to our new arrival, this time around I keep forgetting I am expecting, the only reminder is the exhaustion, acne breakout and morning sickness. Where is the pregnancy glow, I wonder? Blue or Pink? “I am 100% having another boy”, I have convinced by husband, my family and my doctor it’s blue. The fishwifes' tales lean to boy and of course I am a believer that if you have one packet of crisps and a ‘headache’
it’s a boy. We’ve named him ‘Charlie’ and I had decorated my spare room on Pinterest with twin beds, car shaped door handles and vintage rugby balls.
MAY We lost my amazing mother three years back and I had the opportunity to name my future children with her. Well, my daughters at least, as she was convinced I was only having girls. Since my mum passed, I continue to see reoccurring numbers 11:11 which when googled (the source of all knowledge) is my ‘angel’ numbers and Remembrance Day. I am not at all spiritual, but I do find comfort in those numbers. So, the doctor confirmed as I was getting dressed and wiping the ‘jelly’ from my tummy that we were expecting our baby on 11/11! Another amazing gift sent from my mum. May 5th and our doctor asks us “would
you like to know the gender”, we didn’t find out with Harrison but of course I know this time it is a boy and I must get organised! We ask our doctor to conceal it in an envelope and decide that as we were spending the weekend away, we would plan to open it then. The longest week of our lives. We pass the envelope to a good friend. My husband had arranged, as a surprise for my birthday, a trip to Nurai Island and 50 balloons to be waiting in our room on arrival. Our friend would call the hotel with the colour in secret, so we would find out together at the same moment. Friday arrives and we get transported by boat, then golf buggy to a beautiful private villa and I open the door with no idea what to expect and immediately burst into tears (as does my husband and potentially the concierge!) There are 50 pink balloons! It’s a girl! ‘Eve’ is due on 11.11 and we couldn’t be more excited. Thank you mum. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2019 | 17
24 HOURS in the life of a Mum 6-9AM
Today isn’t like any other day. It’s a special one as my little girl is turning two. I have woken up with butterflies in my stomach, thinking about the preparations and how the party will turn out. I’ve spent this hour watching my little one sleep, thinking about how fast she has grown up! Jannah isn’t at nursery as yet, so she is a free bird without a schedule. I’ve taken the day off so I’m a bit relaxed too. Since it’s her day, for breakfast I’m making pancakes – her favourite – and boiled eggs. I get to work right away, planning my to-do list and following up with the vendors.
KAUSAR SYED
singing it to her for about 15 days now, rehearsing how we’re going to cut the cake together – we’ve been enacting all of this with a dummy toy cake – so that she is familiar and knows that this is her day. I hope she doesn’t get nervous in the evening. Once done, it’s time for a bath. Time to start packing things I need for later. I make a carrot juice for my girl and let her play around a bit so that she’s hungry enough for lunch. I know nap time is coming up soon after. I put her to sleep and indulge in a little me-time. I place on a face mask as my skin looks dull and lethargic due to work stress and planning the party.

I wake up my little one, sing and wish her Happy Birthday, which she absolutely loves hearing. To be honest, I’ve been 18 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
I wake her up from her slumber with plenty of snuggles and take some time to play with her in her cot, surrounded by the soft toys. It’s now time to get ready. I’ve chosen a gorgeous pink dress because it’s her favourite colour, and she looks like an adorable princess, if I do say so myself. I’ve picked out a traditional outfit for myself and made sure it’s comfortable enough to run after her when needed.
5:30PM
Off we leave to the party venue, Ramada Chelsea Hotel Al Barsha. She has no idea how much fun she’s about to have. She enters and starts jumping around as she sees her most loved cartoon character, Hello Kitty, all over the venue. She heads straight for the balloons and her friends.
6-7PM
7–8PM
9 -10PM
Most of my family and friends are fasting, – as it’s Ramadan – so we break our fast. The kids are kept entertained at this point with the balloon bender I hired. The little ones put in their requests as he goes on to make balloons, birds, flowers, and animals. The birthday girl is loving the entertainment and all the love she’s getting.
While all my family and friends are mingling, the little ones are busy playing with bubbles. It’s so nice to see happy faces all around. My girl is incredibly happy and at this point, she starts opening up her gifts too.
10-11PM
8-9PM
As planned, we did a pre- photoshoot before all the guests arrive. This is her time to shine and she sure does, with her hilarious and cute poses.
Time to cut the special Hello Kitty cake. I chose a cream-layered chocolate cake and the kids are absolutely loving it. My little girl even has cake all over her face at this point.
The kids are starting to dose off and it’s time for bed. We bid farewell to everyone and start wrapping up the party. At this point, I’m so exhausted and can’t wait to head to bed. On the other hand, my little one has a burst of energy because of all the sweets and cake and isn’t ready to leave the party. Finally, we head home and off to sleep with a heart filled with content. The day went just as I planned and I’m so glad she loved it. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2019 | 19

Thoughts on date night?
What is a date night? We don’t have a nanny, my husband and I decided early on that we wanted to raise our child without any help (crazy right?) so going out after dark is not an option for us. Instead, we have day dates. Every Tuesday after school drop-off we spend the morning together. We usually go to 1762 Stripped in JLT, order coffee eggs benedict and try not to talk about our son.
A book your child loves I believe in myself by Laurie Wright. It teaches children (in a very simple and funny way sometimes) to think of solutions instead of being stuck, emotionally and physically, in the problem.

My son loves to climb so we are either at Adventure HQ Galleria mall, or in Go Sports at Mall of the Emirates, climbing the big wall of lava. He also loves Air Maniax and Bounce. 20 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Trust your instinct. Everyone will have something to say, but there is no single “right” way to raising a child. What works for other moms may not necessarily work for you or your baby. Only you know what is right for you and your family. Have faith in yourself and listen to your inner wisdom.
RAISING THIRD CULTURE KIDS
Are your children growing up with no cultural connection to your home country? Katy Granville tells a true tale of what it’s like raising two boys in the UAE, having done it for eight years Every expat in my circle of friends has a ‘thing’ that they miss most from their home country. I’m talking about the everyday things that make us feel ‘at home’ and connected to our roots. For me, most of them centre around food – Yorkshire puddings and gravy on a Sunday, or a hot sausage roll from the local bakery. For my husband, they are mostly related to sport (apparently watching Man United on TV isn’t quite the same with Arabic commentary) But for our two children who were both born and are being raised in Dubai, it’s a very different story. They are still only young, but they feel no connection to the UK, despite being British passport holders, and having two British parents. In fact, if you ask my three year old where he is from, he will tell you ‘Dubai.’ His list of class mates reads like the Top 20 Names From Around the World. He doesn’t question why his teacher isn’t eating lunch during Ramadan, and he didn’t even flinch when everyone started singing Happy Birthday in Swedish at a recent birthday party. Because my two boys are what are commonly referred to as Third Culture Kids, or TCKS, a term coined in the 1950’s, meaning ‘children who are raised in a different culture or cultures to their parent culture during the developmental stages of their lives.’ And for Third Culture Kids in the UAE, that means being raised in a country whose population is around 85 percent expatriate, made up of 200 different nationalities. So there’s not even one singular culture for them to grab hold of – their environment is about as multicultural as they come 22 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
But how does a Third Culture upbringing impact on our children in the long-term? And how should it inform how we raise them?
Hellos…and Goodbyes Being a TCK, especially in a country like the UAE with such a transient population, means that our children are used to a steady stream of new people to befriend – whether that’s new classmates, new neighbours or simply new faces in the playground. But this also has its downside. Later this summer, a family that we are very close to here in Dubai will be moving back to Canada. As someone who has been in the UAE for some time, I’ve become accustomed to waving goodbye to friends, and whilst it doesn’t get any easier, I accept it’s a fact of expat life. But for my children, I have to wonder whether it will affect their ability to form close relationships in the future. Luckily, I think that expat life has already conditioned our kids to long distance relationships, be that with friends or family. I also think that the special shared experiences that they have with their peers helps create deeper ties. And of course it’s an opportunity to teach them that that friendships require loyalty and commitment, whether that’s sending Christmas cards or scheduling regular phone calls, but also that true friends will always be there for you, no matter how many miles away.
But where are you from?
I’ve already mentioned that my 3 year old considers himself to be from Dubai. But what about in the future, when he has a better grasp of the fact that he doesn’t have an Emirati passport, or perhaps doesn’t even live in the UAE anymore? For many Third Culture Kids, there seems to be a struggle with a lack of sense of belonging. For now, my son is happy to wave his Union Jack flag on International Day at school, but as he gets older and more aware, will he feel like a fraud? Can he be expected to feel pride or a connection towards a place he has never lived? And if he isn’t connected to the UK, then where is he connected to? To help mitigate against this, I believe we have a responsibility as parents to proactively teach our kids about their ‘home’ culture – whether that’s speaking the language in our homes, celebrating religious or cultural festivals, or simply
sharing stories from our own childhoods. But on the other hand, it’s also important to encourage our children to see this lack of roots as liberating – after all, they have an incredible opportunity to build their own identity – one that is a handpicked collection of pieces that creates a whole.
Definitions of normal
As someone who grew up in a small English town, my childhood was undoubtedly very different to that of my children. It’s not just the fact that they are being raised in a more multicultural environment, it’s the fact that it’s so normal for them. As an adult expat, I’ve been privileged enough to experience things such as an Egyptian wedding, a Lebanese funeral and an Emirati birthday party. Each event has caused me a degree of panic – what do I wear? Do I take a gift? I am acutely aware of cultural differences and am desperate to avoid committing any kind of social faux pas. But for my children, they don’t question anything. Their perception of ‘normal’ is so much broader than mine.
But what about when they encounter people with a more limited world view than them? How, for example, will they engage with my elderly grandparents who still hold outdated views about the Middle East or misconceptions about the Muslim faith? As parents of TCKs, we have to encourage them to realise that people can be narrowminded whether they’re cultured, welltravelled or not. And that whilst they don’t have to necessarily accept other views, they should understand that there are lots of viewpoints.
Have a little faith
As the parents of TCKs, it’s natural to question if your kids are living the best lives you can provide, and it’s often easy to worry about what they might be missing out on, especially when they are younger. But in reality, all of the evidence seems to suggest that the skills and traits that they are gaining – confidence, tolerance, fearlessness and adaptability – is laying the foundations upon which they can build happy, well rounded lives. Wherever in the world that may be. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2019 | 23

TAKES ITS COURSE
Cookbook author and mother of three, Zahra Abdalla, reveals how her career path took a turn for the best when she became a mum
H
alf Iranian and half Sudanese Zahra Abdalla, was born in London, England and had the fortune of calling many cities around the world her home, before moving to Dubai over 15 years ago. The mother of three boys and cookbook author completed her Masters’ Degree in Political Science, before relocating to Dubai and starting her career as a research analyst with Dubai Port International. “Ever since, I’ve dabbled in different industries before deciding to be a stay-at-home mom when my children were born. I started my blog over nine years ago as a creative outlet space, when my children were very young, and over the years it has opened lots of new and exciting opportunities,” says Zahra, who released her cookbook Cooking with Zahra a few months ago. As an adolescent, Zahra had always imagined she would take the corporate route, study law and work as a human rights lawyer in the United Nations. Living in Sudan, she had first hand exposure of all the impactful work in the community and always imagined she would work in an industry where she would make an impact on people’s lives. “Life definitely had different plans for me though – initially I moved to Dubai for a one-year stint before going back to MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2019 | 27
The cookbook was a passion project that Zahra always dreamed off. “It is a collection of traditional and modern interpretations of Middle Eastern cuisine. This year, the UAE is celebrating the year of tolerance, and similar to those values, my book is a celebration of polarities: tradition versus modernity, and Eastern verses Western cultures,” she tells me. When we caught up at her home at Jumeirah Golf Estates, her adorable and handsome boys were busy cracking jokes, taunting their mum lovingly, and getting ready for our photoshoot. “As a mother, you somehow learn to manage the art of multi-tasking. I believe, to be an ambitious and multi-cultural person I need to balance my life with different activities that allow me to live my life to the fullest,” she says as we watch the children. Zahra loves having a career but finds it equally important to spend quality time with her children and husband. Mums wear so many hats, Zahra tells me, and life can get hectic, but the reality is that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Over the years, I have learnt that in order to be able to take care of everything and everyone else, it is of utmost importance to take care of ourselves first, so that we can always be mentally, physically and emotionally able to take care of our loved ones.” To achieve a healthy balance between kids, work and home, Zahra typically starts her day with the school drop, and heads to the office for either filming or meetings. By 2pm she heads to school to get the kids and spends the rest of 28 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

“
law school, but soon after arriving to the city, I met my husband and chose love over career,” she says. Zahra struggled in the beginning to navigate and define what she wanted to do in life, so when she had children, she focused on doing what she loved rather than what she should do. “Food was my medium to connect to people and over the years, I am proud of the positive impact I have had to many individuals. My most exciting experience to date was hosting a travel and food documentary show on MBC 1, where I got to travel to five different places and bring to light the incredible work of empowering woman making and impactful difference in their communities.”
the day with them. After pick-up, the kids head to their after-school activities, head home for dinner by 7:30 and go to bed by 8pm. Dinner time is usually the time she spends with her husband, where they get a chance to catch up and connect. “The key is to prioritize your time. I always make it a point to sneak a day every two weeks where I can just pamper myself to a breakfast session, lunch with my girlfriends, a visit to the salon or a session at the spa. I find it a necessity to take couple of days every four months with my family for a staycation or a mini-getaway, so that we can just unwind and mindfully connect,” says Zahra. Zahra’s kids are now passed the toddler stage, at ages 5, 9 and 10, and though at that point she found managing the kids quite a task, she has now forgotten how tough it actually was. She does like the fact that they are all quite independent now. Before having children, she would easily get flustered and overwhelmed with the little stuff. However, ever since, she has learned to be more patient and chill. “There is a solution for every problem,” she tells me. At the end of the day, Zahra advices other mums to take time to listen. “Listen to yourself, your body, your children and the loved ones around you. It is amazing how much you can learn.”

FIVE WAYS OF DETECTING VERTIGO IN CHILDREN Dr. Vishal Pawar, Specialist Neurologist at Aster Speciality Clinic, International City discusses what parents should look out for
Vertigo and dizziness are some of the common causes of neurological consultation. Although the prevalence of dizziness increases with age, it can present symptoms in the pediatric population due to variety of diseases. Dizziness or giddiness is a symptom which encompasses a variety of sensations experienced by children. It includes vertigo, blackout, imbalance of gait, confusion, lightheadedness, whirling, spinning, reeling, rotating, movement of the environment, tilting, falling, pushing, rocking sensation, drunken walking, unsteadiness, swaying, visually induced vertigo, head motion and lastly, induced dizziness etc. There are two different types of dizziness in children. Vertigo, which means the child feels the illusory movement of the head or surroundings (i.e. spinning of the head or environment) and Pseudo-vertigo. This is often noticed as a complaint of dizziness without any rotary component. It could be syncopal dizziness in which the child feels blackout or lightheaded which may or may not be followed by loss of consciousness. It could also be dys-equilibrium dizziness in which the child feels imbalance on standing and
walking or ill-defined dizziness in which it is extremely difficult for the child to describe the symptoms. Vertigo refers to the perception that the child is rotating relative to the environment or that the environment is rotating relative to the patient. It results from a disturbance somewhere in the balance system, which starts from the inner ear and extends to the brain, especially the brainstem and small brain. The causes of vertigo in children may range from trivial reasons to serious underlying disorders. Some of the common causes include otitis media, benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood, or a migraine syndrome as the cause of their vertigo. The following steps might help to decide when to consult the doctor.
1
Timely diagnosis of a child who presents with dizziness is to differentiate true vertigo from pseudovertigo. Patients with pseudovertigo may describe a wide variety of symptoms but will lack a sense of rotation. The details of the symptoms will often point to a cause of pseudovertigo.
2
The second step is to look for the following triggers, accompanying symptoms and clues which suggest a specific
diagnosis i.e. A history of head injury, family history of migraines, whether the symptoms are recurrent or not, fever, consciousness, any ear discharge and presence of hearing loss.
3
The third step is to identify whether the onset of vertigo is sudden or gradual. The sudden onset of symptoms represents different triggers than the cause due to gradual onset.
4
The fourth step is to decide whether the child has any alarming symptoms which warrant urgent consultation and brain scan. Children with vertigo and head trauma, altered consciousness, neurologic findings, or evidence of brain infection need a brain scan and additional evaluation.
5
The fifth step is the examination of the child by a health care provider. Children with true vertigo often display some peculiar finding in the eyes called nystagmus on physical examination. The knowledge of above information will help the parents to identify the alarming symptoms, and give the right information to the healthcare provider helping in the prompt diagnosis and treatment of the cause of the vertigo.

ADVERTORIAL
What an Orthodontist can do for you? Dr. Gilda Behnam Orthodontist at Dubai London Clinic Dental Centre explains why you need to reconsider your dental checkups
An orthodontist diagnoses overcrowded mouths, misaligned jaws and teeth, occlusion, and overbites. A lot of people believe that only children are supposed to have a regular visit to orthodontists, but this assumption is flawed. Even adults need orthodontic services. In fact, there are lots of reasons why someone needs to visit a professional orthodontist:
To minimise the chance of future dental problems
One of the best ways to avert future medical problems is to go for an early checkup. Orthodontic problems such as spaces between the teeth and protruding teeth can lead to tooth decay when not checked on time. These common dental issues, when treated on time, can prevent severe problems in the future. That is the main reason why you need to see an orthodontist on time to prevent some of these future problems.
To feel good about yourself
Our physical appearance has a way of impacting our self-confidence. You may not feel very confident smiling when you have a dental issue, but an orthodontist can help you regain that confidence and improve the quality of your life. So, it’s a good thing to see a professional about your dental issue who can help you by letting you wear aligners, braces, or solving it with other solutions. Your confidence is very important to live a happy life. So, it is important to find out how an orthodontist can help you when you have any issues. 32 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
It improves the health and confidence of your child
Most dental problems can be corrected at an early age. A seven-year old child is not too young to visit an orthodontist. This will help them take care of any dental issues as early as possible before
they become worse. When you take your child for a checkup by a professional dentist, you are helping them improve their smile and stay very confident. It will also wade of any future dental problems that may not be noticeable at the moment.

SUMMER BABY SKINCARE
Did you know our skin is an organ? In fact, it is the largest organ of the human body, making it an extremely important part of our lives. But do we really look after our babies’ skin as well as we think? Discover smart summer care tips from the experts at WaterWipes (the purest baby wipes made with only two ingredients, 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract) Most parents will agree a newborn baby’s skin is the softest, loveliest, most precious thing there is. Skin is our body’s first line of defense against all elements such as sun, wind, harmful rays and chemicals. While it has these important functions, a babies’ skin has just one fifth of the thickness of adults’ making them more sensitive to all of the elements. Their skin needs time to strengthen and grow with the baby. This is why most parents are left wondering what the best way is to take care of their babies’ skin. This is where WaterWipes steps in to help inform parents on the little things they can keep in mind while taking care of their babies’ skin. A crucial fact parents need to remember is babies aren’t like adults – they don’t toil and sweat – babies mostly get messy and need a good clean up whether that’s a diaper change or a change after feeding. Using WaterWipes for a thorough clean on-the-go will keep your baby feeling fresh and clean always. They don’t necessarily need a bath every day like many believe. To keep your babies clean, bathing them three times a week is in fact fine from a hygiene perspective. This practice helps avoid skin dryness and maintains the skin’s natural moisture. During hot temperatures and summer months, it’s important to help the babies’ skin breathe as much as possible by having some diaper-free time and being selective in what to dress your baby in. Giving babies as much diaper-free time as possible will help their skin breathe and help in controlling nappy rash. Lightweight cotton and organic cotton are the best fabrics to look out for, as they are much more breathable and comfortable for babies.
BABY SKINCARE TIPS Use products with natural ingredients and minimal or no fragrances as this can irritate skin. Don’t bathe them too much as water can strip moisture from skin. Opt for natural, breathable materials to dress them in. Regularly moisturize with skin products to keep it hydrated and healthy. Limit sun exposure to protect from harmful UV rays.
So, there you have it! Taking care of baby's beautiful skin simply comes down to using your common sense, knowing what works for your child and most of all, trusting your instinct. Remember to consult a health practitioner if you have any doubts. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2019 | 33

BOOST YOUR CHILD’S MEMORY Have you noticed a decline in your child’s academic skills at the beginning of every school term? A summer completely free of any learning will set students back on their reading and math skills by two to three months. To prevent this, Sherine Mohammed, Managing Partner and Director of Training at The Brain & Learning Centre Dubai shares five simple ways to improve their cognitive functioning Summer time is usually associated with fun and games. Why not make these games good for the brain as well? These five ways can help your child improve attention, processing speed and creativity over summer.
1
Pick games that improve numeracy, strategy, logic, and reasoning skills. Chess, Clue, Battleship, Tic Tac Toe, and Mastermind are a few great board games to try.
2
Memory and attention are important skills for learners. Picture books like Where’s Waldo and other similar hidden 38 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
object games require players to remain attentive for long periods of time. Card matching games or even memorising shopping lists are great ways to improve your child’s memory.
on a child’s comprehension, verbal, and spelling skills. Have children pick their own books to further encourage them. Story cubes are also a fun way to encourage kids to get creative with their story telling skills. Pictionary allows kids to learn new words and improves on their visual skills and imagination. The time pressure will also boost their processing speed.
3
Did you know that using your opposite hand will strengthen neural connections with your brain, grow new connections and foster creativity? Try having kids engage in activities like writing, drawing, eating, and even brushing their teeth, with their nondominant hands.
4
Reading three to five books over the summer will have a positive impact
5
Summer is also a great time to practice and foster good habits that improve brain power and health. These include eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and exercise. Children should be encouraged to engage in activities that help them connect what they have learned over the school year with the real world, to help further ingrain that knowledge by putting theory into practice. Think robotics, museum trips, and nature hikes! Learning a new skill like playing a new instrument will also help improve brain structure, function, long-term memory, attention, coordination, as well as reaction time.

AWAY SPA
W Dubai – The Palm
This spa bends all the rules when it comes to a spa experience. Cosy dim yellow lights have been swapped for the hotel’s signature blue lights, with interiors featuring shimmering mosaic tiles and jewel tones typically found in the ocean. The spa’s entrance boasts a central light feature in the shape of a water drop that hovers over the Beauty Bar; where quick fix treatments take place. The spa is licensed, so you can sip on a beverage and enjoy everything from a glow mask to Wink lash applications at the glam stations. Make sure to carry your swimmers as you will find a hammam and sauna, whirlpool, steam room and experiential shower to use before or after your treatment. Having just stepped off a flight, my skin felt congested and in desperate need of a thorough cleanse and hydration. The therapist chose The Rewind Facial which includes no machines at all, just the magic of her fingers. Comfort Zone skincare products are used, beginning with a gentle face wash that contains 77 per cent natural-origin ingredients including betaine, extracted from sugar beets. This was followed by an illuminating refining scrub to pull out all the impurities from my pores and leave my skin soft and smooth. All along, slight pressure was applied to give my face a massage while cleansing it. A creamy mask was applied on, with purifying green and white clay absorbing excess sebum while shrinking pores. A soothing intensive serum is placed on, tackling redness and sun damage, and at the end, skin feels light, breathable and hydrated. Dhs850 for the facial. Contact +9714 245 5555
FEET LOUNGE REFLEXOLOGY & SPA Golden Mile Galleria, Palm Jumeirah If you’re looking for an absolutely incredible Thai massage experience without the frills, this is the spot to make a beeline for. You’re immediately taken into the treatment room when you arrive, where a sheet, disposable underwear and towel are placed on the floor bed. I opted for a full body massage with herbal compress that was remarkably different from the traditional kind. The masseuse begins by applying oil over the body to warm up the joints, starting with the neck, shoulders and back. Instead of moving the tension out with long strokes, she focuses on pushing the knots away bit by bit, really digging into it around the sides to move it away to the lymph nodes. She then works along the spine, almost as though she’s aligning it while getting rid of aches, inflammation and anything we suffer from at a desk job. Once done, she moves on to the legs, feet and arms. The abdominal area is optional and here, she focuses on improving your digestive tract and immune system. After massaging the area and the colon, deep pressure is applied on all four sides - the pain is slightly uncomfortable, 48 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
but obviously incredible for constipation and energy levels. After the full body massage, the hot herbal compress is applied all over to soothe the muscles and stimulate the organs and senses. I was then asked to sit up straight and lock my fingers behind my neck, after which she pressed her knee into
my back – starting at the bottom – to crack it. My back and arms were stretched out to the sides and I left feeling extremely revived. The session ends with a cup of herbal tea before you take on the day ahead. From Dhs315 for a 90-minute treatment. Visit feetlounge.ae

BLUEWATERS
Drive down to Bluewaters Island for an authentic Mexican experience. This steakhouse and seafood eatery features a bar upstairs, and an expansive dining area that sprawls onto the terrace. It’s the stunning light show on the dining tables that garner excitement though, making you want to take out your phone instantly to take a video. The menu features a wide selection of chicken, meat and seafood, and in true Mexican style, we began with a portion of guacamole. The generous serving is freshly made and tastes divine but do
SARABETH’S
MALL OF THE EMIRATES The new outlet at Mall of the Emirates makes for the perfect pit-stop while shopping. This American establishment serves all-day breakfast and you can savour everything from pancakes and fresh toast to organic acai bowl and chia pudding parfaits whenever you like. If a beverage is what you’re after, stop by for a refreshing ginger-strawberry sparkling lemonade or hot drinks like maple, Spanish or red velvet-lattes, with a macaron or an indulgent chocolate-y cookie. 50 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
add on hot appetisers too. The beef tacos served with bone marrow are great for meat-lovers – don’t forget to drizzle the juicy broth all over. Barboca is served in taquitos, on a bed of tomato sauce that makes each bite juicy and flavoursome. If you prefer seafood, try the tamale which is served the traditional way with the leaf, filled with meaty lobster on the inside. The batter-fried shrimp served in a soft taco is another great option, and to be honest, a single portion of two tacos is incredibly filling. Do save space for the fall-off-thebone lamb shank that’s doused in a robust red chile broth with parsnips. This is best
eaten with the Papas chambray made up of baby potatoes with chile marron olive, onions and garlic. Need to add a bit of heat to your meal? Try the toreados featuring Mesquite grilled serrano chiles and spring onions in a spicy lime marinade. While you relish each bite, the Mariachi band serenades you with classic hits, putting you in a lovely mood for the evening ahead. You may want to take a breather before desserts but do make sure you order some as the Tres leches and Mole chocolate fondant are incredibly delectable. Contact +9714 557 6627
For a substantial meal, we highly recommend the crisp and crunchy charcoal shrimp on a bed of black beans, fresh corn, avocado, rocket leaves and tomatoes, tossed in a light chimichurri dressing. The wagyu burger features premium meat and is cooked to your liking, served with lettuce, tomato, cheddar and guacamole. The macaroni and cheese is one you have to try, without a doubt. Comfort food at its best, the dish features bechamel, Gruyere and parmesan with a crisp coating on top. To end your meal with something sweet, look no further than the Valrohna chocolate fondant with raspberry compote – it’s made to order and arrives hot with chocolate oozing out the minute you crack the surface. Sarabeth’s offers a special vegan menu and kids menu too. Contact +974 328 6888
THE LONDON PROJECT Take a few friends along and head to the Shoreditch Brunch on Fridays. The buzzing and vibrant brunch begins with charcuterie boards of cheese alongside cold cuts, preserves and accompaniments including grapes and strawberries. Take your time, relish the bread, and enjoy the drinks on offer. Everything is served at the table, so you don’t have to budge and can continue the conversation while swaying along to tunes from the DJ. A platter of crisp bubbly battered fish topped with caviar is served soon after, with a bowl of chips, and one of our favourites from the brunch; the pulled beef soft shell tacos. Not only are these mouthwatering, they also look absolutely divine. As a way of serving mains, mango and jalapeno glazed chicken is brought to the table with a garden salad and perhaps the best pasta we’ve tasted in a while. The truffle gnocchi with porcini beurre monte is something you wish you could curl up with at home while watching TV. Break the yolk in the centre and feast on this lip-smacking dish with soft pillow-y pieces of gnocchi. The brunch ends with the Queenies Chocolate Torte which features layers upon layers of chocolate in cake form. Fridays, from Dhs250 per person. FAMILY STAYCATION The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi is the perfect beachside summer escape
Saadiyat Island is perhaps one of the most tranquil neighborhoods in the capital. Driving up to the hotel, your eyes meet plenty of lush trees and stunning villas that line the roads to the the resort. The hotel’s grand entrance features an expansive lobby with direct views of the beach that beckons, and check in is just under five minutes so you’re ready to explore the facilities.
Accomodation
The Premium Sea View Room was offered to us, with laid-back décor and neutral hues complementing the colours of the ocean and stunning view. The plush king size bed sat right across the TV – a feature my partner loves – a chaise lounge and work desk towards one end, and beyond the TV screen, the bathroom that stretches from one corner of the room to the other. The lavish bathroom is split into a bathtub that boasts views of the Sea, and a rain shower in the centre of the space that splits up the his and her sinks on both sides. 52 | JUNE 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
When we arrived, the absolutely incredible butlers welcomed me with my face on a bottle, fresh fruits, chocolate truffles, and a magazine with none other than myself as the cover star. Attention to detail is impressive here, and from the suite or literally anywhere at the resort, you can What’s App your butler for everything from complimentary pressing to unpacking your suitcase.
FACILITIES
If you’re afraid of falling off the bandwagon while on holiday, booking a stay here is worthwhile. The St. Regis Athletic Club boasts a state-of-the-art gym, Technogym weight and cardio machines, two complimentary-use indoor squash courts (inclusive of equipment), two outdoor tennis courts, volleyball, squash, bike rentals and studio-based classes such as spinning

and yoga. Swimmers can choose from indoor and outdoor lap pools, family pool and adults pool. Golfenthusiasts can play a round at the nearby Saadiyat Beach Club, of which part of the course is nestled on the hotel’s grounds. While adults relax by the pools, kayak on the beach, and unwind at the Iridium spa, children between ages one to 12 can head to the Sandcastle Club. The bright and lively indoor play area includes mats, blocks, puzzles, table tennis, entertainment ranging from PlayStation and Sega to Wii and Xbox. Children can also play a game at the half-court basketball area, and head to the mystical cave that leads to the children’s pools where colourful waterfalls cool them off while they splash around. Both spots are supervised by the club’s staff, however children under four must be accompanied by a guardian (childcare is offered upon request for an additional fee).
CULINARY OPTIONS
Lunch is best by the resort’s pool. We chose a cabana by the main pool and tucked into a fresh cold kale salad with citrus dressing, guacamole, and a smoked salmon sandwich, for something light and wholesome. For dinner, the cosy and intimate Sontaya is one to try. We began the meal with slightly crisp pan-fried crab cakes accompanied with a mango salad and lobster mayonnaise. For a warm, comforting appetizer, we chose the Tom Yum soup that’s made with a flavor-packed prawn broth, staying true to the traditional recipe. The Massaman short rib curry with sticky rice is absolutely divine for mains – tender slowcooked meat and sweet potatoes are covered in a thick medium-spiced gravy, topped with onions, cashew nuts
and pearl onions for tanginess and crunchy textures. Since my partner and I are crustacean lovers, we opted for the Vietnamese ginger and chili tiger prawn in shellfish gravy sauce with fried onions, cucumber and pickled beansprouts. Instead of going down the traditional fruit-based dessert typically served in Asian restaurants, we opted for a single origin molten cake with Korean pear sorbet and ginger scented toffee – an indulgent end to a perfect meal. Breakfast is served at Olea, the lobby level of the resort, and if the weather permits take a seat on the sunny, vibrant-décor terrace where you can hear the birds chirping as water trickles down the fountains. The buffet includes everything from an egg station to Mediterranean and Asian dishes, fresh pastries, fruits, and plenty more.

EXPERT ADVICE
Babak Moghaddam - Operations Manager at Champion Cleaners shares five tips to maintain your rug and keep it clean 1. Carpets and rugs should be vacuumed properly and regularly. How often you clean it really depends on the kind of traffic (kids and pets). It’s important to get it cleaned when the colour starts looking dull. If you wait till the carpet is filthy, cleaning will be much more difficult and the complete restoration may not be possible. 2. Always check the label of your carpet before going ahead with any home remedies for spot cleaning, as silk and wool are very susceptible to this kind of treatment. 3. Keep your sofas away from your carpets or otherwise, protect your carpet from the sofa legs by all means. 4. Act quickly if you spill drink or food on the rug. It should be addressed immediately by resorting to a professional cleaner or home remedies
where applicable. When resorting to professional cleaners, always ask about their methods, cleaning products and services. 5. The best way to protect expensive and hand-woven rugs is to designate special slippers for that area. Make this a habit and your rug will last forever.
Not sure where to begin with your rug? You’re better off leaving it in the capable hands of a cleaning service. We tested Champion Cleaners for a beige fluffy tassel rug that had seen better days. Overtime, the tassels started coming off easily and the edges turned grey as it was kept around the coffee table. Champion Cleaners picked it up one evening, called in the next day to let me know what the main problems were (discoloration, a bit of wear and tear) and proceeded to clean the rug. About five days later I received a call about my rug delivery. The rug was sent bag perfectly wrapped, without any discolouration at all – it looked as though it was new - and smelling absolutely gorgeous. Cleaning starts from Dhs26 per square metre. PETS
ADVER TORIAL
HOT WEATHER SAFETY
– HEAT STROKE
Temperatures are soaring. If you think you can’t bear the heat, imagine how your four-legged pet must be feeling right now. Here Dr. Adrienn Krasznai, DVM Endocrinology/Internal Medicine from Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic reveals ways to detect heat stroke with grass. Always remember to carry lukewarm water and a small towel on your walk, to let them cool down their body – especially areas with less hair, for example on the belly, lower legs and on the top of the head.
If you live in a hot climate, where the sun is up for 15 hours, the temperature climbs to 45 Celsius and higher, and humidity reaches the point of 90%, chances are it may look like a beautiful day to be outdoors, but it’s quite the opposite for your adventurous fourlegged pet. As parents of our furry friends, we have to be careful and alert, and look for tell-tale signs that disclose they’ve had enough of the outdoors and require a shaded area and to be cooled down. Extra warm air temperature puts stress on your pets’ body, which makes them sweat through their paw pads and evaporate through their nose. To regulate their body temperature, they pant, leave their tongue hanging out and have their mouths wide open. Symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. In severe cases, the pet can also vomit, have seizures, bloody diarrhoea, and highly elevated body temperature. Pet owners should consider their animals temperament when they go for their regular walks because high energy dogs can continue walking and running until they collapse during their activity. In addition to this, it’s important to remember that pets can suffer from sunburn. It may sound strange, but it’s true with pets who have white fur and pink coloured skin underneath. If you use any sunscreen or insect repellent product on your pets, be sure they are labelled for 62 | MAY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
use on animals. If you have an animal with long hair, feel free to trim their hair but do not shave it completely because the layers of dogs’ coats protect them from overheating and sunburn as well. Certain type of breeds are highly susceptible to overheating - like pugs and Persian cats, who have short nose and/or flat face because they are not able to maintain their body core temperature through efficient panting. Cement-concrete-asphalt or sand surface can reach extremely high temperatures during the day. Pets, being so close to the ground, can heat up quickly and their sensitive paw pads can burn as well. Take consideration and choose an area
It’s also important to remember to never leave your pets in an unventilated-vehicle for any period of time, where temperature can rise enormously high in a very short time. Not only can it lead to fatal heat stroke, it is illegal in several countries. Once you return home from outdoor activity, offer them fresh drinking water and rinse their coat with fresh water from possible chlorine or salty water, if they just went swimming. If they can’t drink due to heavy panting, you could give them small ice cubes to swallow. A good-responsible pet owner should take their pets for a vet check before summer, because elderly, sick or overweight animals and those who have lung or heart diseases have less tolerance to the extreme outdoor temperature. Animals with these conditions should be kept cool, in air-conditioned rooms, as much as possible. In certain countries, where the heartworm exists, pets should be tested for it before warm season. So please remember, if you can get hot and dehydrated, so can your pets. Treat your furry friends as you would like to be treated yourself. Visit blueoasispetcare.com

Gardening With Children
Teach your children how to grow their own fruit and vegetables this summer. Here, Saresa Anthonissen, Creative Director at Dubai Garden Centre, shows us how Usually vegetables do not thrive during summer in the UAE. There are a few species that can survive throughout the year. Mango, pomegranate and citrus are
some varieties that prefer a warmer climate. Citrus lemon (Commonly known as lemon tree) on the other hand, loves direct sun. Ideally, fruit trees should be planted during
the month of September, but if you were buying a mature plant, it would be able to thrive and even bear fruit and flowers during the warm summer months in the UAE.
WHAT TO PLANT THIS MONTH?
very little maintenance. While teaching your children the importance of growing produce and eating what’s plucked from the garden, it’s important to make them understand that certain plants take time to yield fruit. Citrus lemon, for instance, would comparatively yield lesser fruits and flowers during summer than during winter.
too, as the quality and type of soil you use will have a direct effect on the growth of your plant. While planting a fruit tree, ensure you use good quality organic soil and fertilizer. This will have a direct effect on the growth of the plant. Make sure you place the pot in a shaded area too, to reduce heat to the root zone. This will help protect the plant from burning.
PLANTING TIPS
The most significant advantage of planting a citrus lemon is that it loves direct sunlight and thrives throughout the summer season. Apart from this, it needs 64 | MAY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
The Citrus lemon plant is best when purchased as a small plant, which can then be transferred to a bigger clay pot. Clay pots are ideal for planting fruit trees as unlike plastic; they are porous and evaporate water from their sides; this helps the plant to grow better as the roots are kept cooler and the evaporation reduces the risk of water logging. Citrus lemon is best planted in the ground. Ensure you use good organic potting soil
