Baby Brains by Simon James. This is a fun and entertaining story that describes Baby Brains’ first days and shows how incredibly smart he is. My favorite thing about the book is the illustration, as it opens the mind up to imagine the situation happening in real life and how funny it would be.
It was at Palm Grill Restaurant at The Ritz Carlton Dubai. It reminded us of Mauritius with the sea vibe and grills on offer. The Ritz is always our place to go as this is where I met my husband, so we’re just reviving memories.
You are probably already overwhelmed with questions in your head about what is right or wrong. Enjoy the essence of the present and live every moment, because they will never come back. WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum
JEWEL JENSTON
First-time mum and an Electronics Engineer
AUGUST
It is either a long road to getting pregnant or you find yourself unexpectedly expecting. We had been trying for a few months and each time a negative result on the test was quite disheartening. Nevertheless, I continued with my folic acid supplements hoping for the best. I think we must have spent over Dhs100 on tests alone and every time I tried to go to a different pharmacy, so that they wouldn’t recognize me. After a while it became a norm and I started becoming less optimistic. The day I found out I was pregnant (August 22nd) was the day I least expected it. My little one decided to announce her arrival in the womb with a bang – yes! I felt dizzy and this soon followed with fainting - exactly like how is it in the movies (which I always believed to be an exaggeration). Immediately we went to a doctor fearing a concussion and she informed me that I was 14 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
pregnant after a Beta HCG test. We were over the moon and my husband quipped that I had two bumps to announce – one is my belly and the other on my head.
SEPTEMBER
I had an ultrasound this month which showed the baby’s heartbeat. Listening to life grow inside of you is a special feeling. I also began to notice how tired I was all the time. I had no other symptoms outside of an occasional nausea (not fun and lasted until the delivery). But every cloud has a silver lining, the silver lining to mine was that I could eat all that I wanted and not worry about gaining weight (little did I know that my love for food was going to go down the drain in a few week’s time). I downloaded the Ovia app which helped me track the development in the womb week by week.
OCTOBER
This month was the most hectic of all since we were shifting apartments. I was worried I would be super exhausted, but something to take my mind off the nausea was good. I slept about eight hours a day and also took short naps. The worst part was waking up a million times in the middle of the night for bathroom trips.
NOVEMBER
I was so relieved that the honeymoon period of pregnancy “the second trimester” had officially begun. For about two weeks, I had runny and stuffy nose and found out that it was a normal pregnancy symptom. I was advised to take a flu shot but I decided not to. My racing heartbeat, shortness of breath and mild nausea became constant. I had intense craving for mutton, especially mutton biriyani throughout the trimester, probably because the baby announced her arrival on an Eid holiday.
DECEMBER
Shopping for maternity clothes was on the agenda (even though my bump was still albeit small). My parents were coming down this month to join me for my anomaly scan and celebrate Christmas. My blood test showed low levels of iron, so I had to take iron supplements twice a day. I also started consuming beetroot, carrot and apple smoothies, apricots and liver.
JANUARY
It was only now that my bump started to show, and it was around this time I started feeling the kicks. At first, it felt like little flutters mostly after meals while resting on the couch or lying down for a nap. It is not that I have not known realistically and logically that there is a tiny human forming inside me, but the kicks made it so much more real.
FEBRUARY
I went to sleep at night thinking to myself that my pregnancy is going great and I am just enjoying this phase. Come next morning I look in the mirror and I see my gums are swollen near my canines. Since our immunity takes a vacation at this point, dental hygiene was very important. I had to intermittently gargle with salt water for the rest of my pregnancy (sigh!).
MARCH
My countdown has begun. We attended antenatal classes and also gathered information about epidural. The D day was by the end of
the following month and I started packing my hospital bag with the essentials and also went shopping for my soon-to-arrive bundle of joy.
APRIL
As my clock ticks, I realized I could go into labour any minute, any day and this thought was making me nervous. I started exercising more, eating more dates, papayas and pineapples (it might not be scientifically proven that these induce labour, but I didn’t want to leave any stone unturned). The membrane sweep was unsuccessful, so we decided to wait.
MAY
The 10th month - yes, there is a 10th month in pregnancy! Even after 40 weeks my baby is super comfortable in the uterine hotel while her mama is completely bloated and restless. On the 41st week, I was admitted for induction and after 22 hours of labor we opted for a C section and out comes my baby girl into my arms on May 8th. It has been a blissful journey so far, from the highest of the highs and lowest of the lows. Motherhood is definitely the hardest thing I have ever loved.
I had an ultrasound this month. Listening to life grow inside of you is a special feeling

24 HOURS IN THE LIFE OF A MUM BRENNA WHITAKER Jazz and Blues Singer at Q’s, Palazzo Versace, and mum to two-year old Rygar
16 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
8 - 10AM
2-6PM
Balancing life as a touring musician and mom can be tricky. International travel and late nights aren’t great for kids, and being away from my husband, Ryan, and son Rygar is hard. So, whenever possible, if it is anything over two weeks and in one city, they come along. This summer I was fortunate to be a part of Quincy Jones productions for a summer residency at the gorgeous Palazzo Versace Hotel in Dubai, at his new Jazz Club, “Qs.”
After nap time, we grab a quick snack – usually pizza and broccoli, or have a snack in the room – our mini fridge stays stocked with healthy snacks and milk. Because we're in the desert, and it's hot, we wait to leave the hotel until after 4pm. Dubai is very baby-and family-friendly and we've enjoyed watching Rygar interact with different nationalities from all over the world. A two-year-old learning to talk has no language barrier.
The gig includes a lavish two bedroom suite – ornate furniture, Versace linens, and plush Oriental rugs usually covered with toys – and daily housekeeping, laundry and room service and carte blanche dining in the fabulous restaurants – which is a big change from life in LA. I feel like a queen, with plenty of time to sleep and play with my baby. Since I work late evenings, Ryan lets me sleep in until 10am, while he and Rygar head down for breakfast.
10AM-12PM
The boys wake me up and bring me coffee. We set up a play area in front of the TV in our suite and do water colour paint books (no mess) and have dance parties. Rygar sings “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” but his new obsession is the Lil Nas X song, "Old Town Road". We mix it up with “Doe A Dear” and the “Lonely Goat herd” from The Sound of Music. Rygar loves Sesame Street and we stick to educational TV.
12-2PM
At noon, we grab lunch at Mosaico in the lobby and try to keep him from throwing food on the floor, which, unfortunately, he thinks is funny. By 1pm, Rygar is pretty worn out, so we close the curtains for nap time in his crib. Ryan works in the office area in the suite and I try to nap while Rygar is napping. I do three sets a night – it can be pretty grueling. Sleep is important to keep my voice healthy.
6-9PM
Rygar and I go to the pool at 6pm to give dad a break to go train jujitsu in the city. I run laps in the pool with him on my back and he's learning to swim. Then we order room service for dinner and I get ready for work. Bath time is one of the most cherished moments in my life, with bubbles and water toys. The service at the Palazzo Versace Hotel is incredible and the staff love Rygar and are always giving him chocolate and high fives. He has discovered the turndown service chocolates and knows where to look every night too! It's pretty sweet unless he eats too many before bed.
9PM-2AM
Ryan gets Rygar ready for bed and reads to him, as I throw on a vintage cocktail dress and heels, a high ponytail, individual eyelash extensions, kiss them goodnight and head downstairs to perform with my three-piece band until the wee hours. Q's is packed every night! On occasion, we hire a nanny, so mom and dad can have alone time, and Ryan can see my shows once in a while. But mostly, we spend our time with Rygar. We use a service called Malaak mama and baby care that has been wonderful for nanny help. On a good night, I get about seven hours of sleep. The work is hard, but rewarding and overall, it has been a wonderful experience. I am so fortunate that Ryan’s able to travel and that he is such a great dad. I know when Rygar gets older, or we have more kids, traveling won’t be so easy. But in the meantime, we are having a wonderful, once in a lifetime adventure.

FOSTERING CREATIVITY
Olivia Corsi, Founder and Managing Partner of Caramel and Sun and mum to two adorable girls reveals how she’s inspiring her kids to get creative and find their spark
F
rench-native Olivia Corsi was drawn to Dubai nearly 12 years ago to work within the luxury perfumes department at Chalhoub Group. Having previously worked within the sector in France, Ireland and the UK, the mum of two little girls Stella (six) and Romy (four), didn't realize one day she would launch her own company here in a completely different industry. “At Caramel and Sun, we focus on design and contemporary kids’ furniture and accessories. I just bought over the UAE handmade kids furniture brand, POMME KIDS, and I’m about to launch a new kids’ accessories brand made out of African wax tissue,” says Olivia. The business school graduate married a “very supportive” French-Greek man, and since moving here, has found herself pursuing all her career goals. Her last stint was at Estee Lauder, where she headed the Marketing for luxury cosmetic brands. “This really helped me learn the steps required to build a quality brand, details in retail execution and overall management of a business,” she says. As she takes us around her home in Jumeirah, she reminisces the beginnings of Caramel and Sun. “I was designing Stella and Romy's room and started to see that there was a gap in the market. I had to shop online in Europe and bring things in my suitcase from Paris, to develop an
18 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
environment for my kids filled with cool, creative products from small and big brands,” she says. Olivia strongly believes that a kids' room is the first place they learn about design and that it allows them to develop their own creativity. “I therefore did what every passionate and crazy person would do. I quit my job and dove into opening my company. I am loving every mad minute of it.” Olivia admits that while it takes passion and a long-term belief in her company, it is important for her to find that balance with her children and family. “I try to put as much time and effort into being a mother who is present and bonded to my children, as I do to be present for my customer and team. The hours are long but since this balance is driven by passion for what I do, and love for my children, this gives me the strength to do both.” But in order to manage her business and home life, she need to demonstrate what it takes. “I am very proud to show my girls that decisions in life can be driven by passion and a lot of hard work,” says Olivia. Becoming a mum has confirmed this, and everything from her school-runs to playtime is a measure of success. To start the day positively, Olivia admits she focuses on getting a café latte on her way to work. After that, it’s in and out of meetings with customers, to the store in Mercato or office in Al Quoz, and while she’s

en route, phone calls with the team to complete her to-do list and focus areas for the week. At 2:30pm, it’s pick-up time for the kids to drop them home, meetings with customers, distribution and online businesses, delivery schedules, new assortment selections; and ways to expand and open new doors. She gets home between 7-7:30pm at least three time a week, to have dinner with the family, and either goes to bed after putting the kids to sleep at 8pm; watches a cool series; or catches up with girlfriends for a nice night out. “Our conversations are usually about how we will remake the world. Dubai has really become home to me!” Olivia also tries to ensure the girls have the right balance of creative activities in both physical and intellectual ways. “They go to gymnastics, ballet and swimming, each week, to help them learn how to creatively move their bodies. I see them being so confident in how they dance and even show their friends cool moves,” she says. Olivia credits her children’s school, Dubai International Academy, for being awesome with hosting concerts. She also works on their intellectual creativity with various language classes like French, and soon Greek, to allow them to feel comfortable in any language. “We read in all three languages at home and ensure a balanced language environment. I practice what I preach and make sure that they try out all the super products we have at Caramel and Sun - like colouring maps from Omy which guarantee quiet time,” she says. Olivia finds that she has been letting them get bored to discover their own creative spark and develop their play stories alone or together, without needing “digital sugar (TV/Ipads).” She’s also looking into bringing some great new no-screen products like LUNI brand, which is a great storyteller and focuses on reducing kids time with screens. Since they are parents of Third Culture Kids with roots in France, Greece and a life In Dubai, Olivia and her husband focus a large part of time with their children on two things. “I am instilling our French roots and give them the platform to show their creativity in their own way.” Although they are still young, she wants them to feel creative in the place they live, the way they think, draw, move, dance and express themselves overall. Work is fast-paced and constant, here in the UAE, but Olivia always makes time for her children and family. “We make sure we spend time together and also one-on-one time with each of the girls, so they feel special as a family unit as well as individuals. I love little shopping trips with each of my kids,” she smiles and tells me. You can tell Olivia is extremely proud of what she has accomplished, and the fact that she has two girls that she can be a role model for. “I am a very passionate person and jump into things because they excite me. I thrive for constant creativity and want to build this in my kids from the early years,” she says. Olivia strongly believes in passion being the road to success, and creativity being a platform for happiness. Her advice to other moms is to help kids find their creativity and spark. Everything happens for a reason, just don’t allow yourself to get stuck if you can’t find your reason,” she says, ending our conversation on a wise, hearty note.

SPECIAL CARE FOR YOUR BABY’S SKIN There’s no room for debate - a newborn baby’s skin is the softest, loveliest, most precious thing there is. Every parent will tell you that. There is more to a baby’s skin than its unique feel and smell. It consists of three main layers which ensure protection, regulation and sensation. The outermost layer protects against microorganisms, chemicals and allergens and this barrier function is very important for infants. Babies’ skin has just one fifth of the thickness of adults’, which can increase the likelihood of permeability and dryness. It is therefore important to select the correct type of products and ingredients for use on babies’ sensitive skin to: • Prevent diaper rash • Minimize skin conditions such as eczema • Preserve the barrier function
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS FOR YOUR BABY’S SKIN It is recommended that products used for cleansing babies should not alter or affect the protective skin barrier. When choosing products for infant and newborn skin, you should always choose pH neutral products, products containing only mild preservatives that are fragrance-free, alcohol-free and soapfree. Fragrances and preservatives are the two most clinically relevant allergens found in personal care products. One of the most common products used to support a baby’s skin routine and care is baby wipes. While you may find many baby wipes options at your local supermarket, it is always important to check the number of ingredients in the product before purchasing the wipes.
WHAT MAKES WATERWIPES DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BABY WIPES?
WaterWipes, the world’s purest baby wipes, are made from 99.9% high purity water and a drop of Fruit Extract. The Fruit Extract has naturally occurring antimicrobial properties, and acts as a gentle skin conditioner. WaterWipes are soap, alcohol and fragrance free to help reduce the risk of drying out the skin and the potential development of nappy rash. Clinical studies, overseen by dermatologists show that WaterWipes have good skin compatibility, are non-irritating and non-sensitizing. WaterWipes provide safe cleansing for the most delicate newborn skin and are so gentle they can also be used on premature babies. They have been specifically developed to be as mild and pure as cotton wool and water. WaterWipes contain minimal ingredients and are manufactured using a unique and patented technology within cleanroom conditions, allowing it to produce a gentle and effective baby wipe without the addition of unnecessary ingredients. WaterWipes are the only baby wipes awarded by several associations: • Allergy UK • The National Eczema Associaton of America (NEA) • Gold Winner of Mother Baby & Child Awards 2018 as Baby Wipe Brand of the year • AssociatIon Française pour la Prévention des Allergies – AFPRAL • The Eczema Association of Australasia (EAA) • Registered with Vegan Society

WAYS TO ENJOY DENTAL CLEANING
Dr. Amit Asudani discusses ways to make dental health a fun activity for little ones
THE TIME CAPSULE
GET PLAYFUL
Use a timer when brushing because children are fascinated by timers. Turn up the music and let them listen to a song as they get ready for the day. If their favorite jam is two minutes (or more) you’ll be able to ensure they’re hitting the dentist-recommended amount of brushing time.
Make time around the sink fun, by letting them pick a toothbrush that’s in a unique shape or get their favourite cartoon character to hold the brush. With so many childfriendly designs and flavours of toothpaste available over the counter today, it’s best to let them choose what they want. Children feel much better about activities in which they are involved.
BRUSHING IS NOT A TASK/CHORE When brushing, smile a lot, make funny faces, and compose a funny song while you and your child clean your teeth. 24 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Children should have their first dental appointment within six months of their first tooth coming in, or at 12 months of age, whichever happens first. Taking them to the dentist at this young age not only lets the dentist assess the condition of the tooth or teeth, it also gets the baby used to dental appointments early on and makes seeing the dentist a part of their routine. The second appointment should be at the age of three - consider this as the reinforcement appointment. Avoid getting any procedures done on that visit, it should just be a simple visit to the dentist. Here are a few tips to try at home:
MAKE A GAME OUT OF IT Take advantage of your child's playful nature when teaching them how to take care of their teeth. The earlier you start, the simpler the games can be. Just make sure to put a big smile on your face and keep the mood light. Try a copycat game. To play, brush your teeth and get a big mouthful of bubbles and then smile wide and let the bubbles run down your chin and into the sink. It looks funny, but that is the point. Then have your child copy what you did. Next time, let your little one lead and be prepared to make a toothpaste mustache on your lip if that is where they leads the game. Have fun with it. You could also try rewards. If messy games, such as copycat are not your cup of tea, go with a reward system instead. Put stickers on the calendar each day after your child brushes and flosses, or let them pick a board game that the whole family can play together at the end of the week. This can be a great activity for the whole family, and it creates a connection in your child's mind between dental care and fun. Teaching your little ones about good dental health is important for lifelong dental habits. Throw in a bigger reward for a full month of brushing and flossing, such as an evening at the movies, a favourite meal and dessert.
BEFRIEND YOUR DENTIST
Just like making daily brushing fun, important, so is making a trip to the dentist. After all, they’ll be visiting at least once a year for annual checkups. Find a doctor who makes you and your kid comfortable being in their office.

TEACHER’S PROFILE
MICHAELA BARBER
Head of Juniors at Repton School Dubai How did you get into teaching?
Your greatest achievement?
Since the age of five, I have always wanted to be a teacher and that desire has never waived. I remember asking for chalk and a chalk board for birthday presents, as well as organising my bedroom to include a school library bookshelf. I feel very fortunate that I have had a clear career path since such a young age. I followed that dream and have never regretted the decision.
I am very proud to be part of Repton. When I was appointed, the CEO at the time explained ‘You are not like any other Head that we have appointed before, we are taking a risk with you!’, and I am so glad they did. Four years on and I still walk through the Repton arch every day, proud to be part of such a vibrant community.
What excites you about your role?
How do you get students interested in the subjects that you teach?
I tell the children, parents and anyone who will listen, that I truly believe I have the best job in the world. The chance to be involved in shaping young people’s lives, to be a guide in developing children’s aspirations, providing them with opportunities within a safe and secure environment and to enable them to go on to achieve what they desire, is something I truly enjoy being a part of.
As a Primary practitioner, I teach all subjects. But the truth behind getting students interested, is to be interested yourself. I am passionate about learning. This year I have been teaching humanities to Year 5 and we have had some thought-provoking lessons about environmental change and how each of us can make a difference on a daily basis, by reducing our use of plastic and palm oil.
Any challenges you face?
One thing you would like to change about the educational system?
The hardest challenge is making sure that every child feels that they are the centre of their own universe. I want every child to believe that everything is possible and that nothing is out of reach, which is something I aim to achieve every day. To find ways to create an environment for each child to thrive every day is the biggest challenge I face, but one that makes me excited to go to work every day.
I strongly believe in a personalised learning pathway for each child. Not everyone is suited to classroom learning with a teacher at the front. Most academic children thrive in a traditional classroom environment, however others prefer to study in more practical ways or to utilise technology. If I could change one thing it would be to provide bespoke pathways for each person.

ASK THE PRINCIPAL DEAN PYRAH
Executive Principal at Victoria International School Sharjah
How did you begin your career in education? I began teaching in an Independent School in Melbourne in 1994, as an English and History teacher at Yarra Valley Grammar School.
How long have you been at this school and where were you prior to this? I am in my tenth year at Victoria International School Sharjah. Prior to this, I was in a senior leadership position at GEMS Wellington International School in Dubai.
Please tell us about your school curriculum. VISS is a premium not-for-profit international school in the United Arab Emirates providing a quality Victorian education to a diverse international community. It is a highly sought-after school and is seen as a leader in education in the region. The school teaches the Victorian version of the Australian curriculum and its teachers are predominately sourced from schools in Australia, the majority being from Victoria. The school also teaches the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program to students in grades 11 and 12.
What sets this school apart from others in the city? VISS is recognised as the pre-emanate, notfor-profit international school in the Northern Emirates. We also have one of the largest state-of-the-art campuses in the whole of the UAE as well as excellent performing arts and sporting programs and world class facilities. We maintain strong relationships with International universities in Australia. The campus also boasts a dedicated Innovation
and robotics Centre, and an outstanding Arabic programme across the K-12.
What should parents keep in mind when enrolling their children at your school?
Any notable achievements from the students?
We have world class teachers, great facilities, an extensive Music and Preforming Arts programme, a strong community, and wellbeing and behavioral programs. It’s also worth noting we have a holistic educational approach.
The Robotics team won the UAE robotics championship twice and have represented the UAE in International competition in China for the past two years.

THE MONTESSORI METHOD Montessori-educator and Founder of LazyMontessorian.com, Francesa Liberatore (@lazymontessorian), discusses how this system helped both her children
MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | AUGUST 2019 | 29
E D U C A T I O N
Choosing a nursery for your child is a daunting feat, especially with the amount of choice we have in this country. Maria Montessori believed that each child holds within themselves the keys to their own development, and therefore her method was designed to “follow the child” and allow them to express what is already within them. If this sounds a little too vague, fear not, the method is detailed and defined and easy to recognize. Here are six key principles of Montessori philosophy that you can and should expect to find in a good Montessori programme:
MIXED-AGE CLASSROOMS
This is easier said than done in the UAE because many parents choose to send their children to big school at age 4. However, in most Montessori nurseries you will find classrooms of children from 2.5 to 4 years and over, and probably a toddler class for the 6 month-to-2-year-olds. Maria Montessori believed that mixed age classes were more representative of real life, and that a mix of ages allowed children more freedom and independence; the younger children learn from their older peers, and the older children feel a sense of pride and responsibility in acting as role models.
A FOCUS ON FREEDOM This is probably the most well-known tenet of Montessori and possibly the most misunderstood. The kind of freedom that Montessori envisaged was not 20 children running wild, which understandably fills even a seasoned parent with dread. It was rather a community of children who are free to “work” (her word for what is more commonly known as “learning through play”) on what they wish, as long as they wish, but who are also bound by defined rules for order (tidying up after themselves), and respect (behaving respectfully towards the Montessori materials, peers and adults).
30 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
FOSTERING INDEPENDENCE The Montessori teacher – more commonly referred to as an educator or guide – acts upon the directive to “help the child help themselves”, which basically means they will set things up so that your child can do things themselves as much as possible. The Montessori-prepared environment is instrumental in this: you will notice that children have free access to the bathroom and are expected to wash and dry their own hands. They may also have free access to snacks, which they are also allowed to prepare themselves (although this varies from nursery to nursery, ask about snacktime routines). Young children are encouraged to take off and put on their shoes independently; all materials (I explain this word below) are at childheight and the child is expected to set up their own work and then clear it up themselves. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home claiming they cut an apple into slices or swept the floor, but be assured this was all child-proof and supervised!
I would look out for a healthy mix of materials and toys, with preference for real-life scenarios MONTESSORI MATERIALS Instead of toys, Montessori nurseries have materials. These, together with a trained Montessori-educator and a carefully prepared environment, are the third pillar of a Montessori classroom. She carefully designed all the materials for her classroom and you can expect to find a Practical Life section with everyday objects for the children to work with, such as pouring water and threading beads; a Sensorial section with materials designed to stimulate the child’s senses; a Math section; and a Literacy section. Many Montessori settings will also have more traditional toys such as a play kitchen, a role-play area and building blocks. Although purists would say these don’t belong in Montessori education, I believe they can often enhance the children’s learning experience, so I would look out for a healthy mix of materials and toys, with preference for 'real-life' scenarios and natural materials such as wood.
MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | AUGUST 2019 | 31
E D U C A T I O N
A LONG(ISH) WORK PERIOD Ideally, Montessori education envisages an uninterrupted three hours of "work time” for the children to use as they wish, within the classroom. However, in most nurseries in the UAE, you will find this is closer to two or more hours. The idea behind this is basically that it takes a child a significant amount of uninterrupted time to become fully engaged in their work. Hand in hand with this idea is the basic tenet that you must never disturb an engaged child, because the kind of deep focus this child has achieved is essentially the aim of Montessori education, for it will allow the child to develop, learn and grow.
Teachers aim to allow the child to lead their own learning
CHILD-LED LEARNING Possibly Maria Montessori’s most well-known and oftrepeated tenet is “follow the child.” This encapsulates all that is wonderful and unique about Montessori, in that the educators are present as guides, not traditional top-down teachers, and their aim is to allow the child to lead their own learning. Maria Montessori believed that only this kind of independent learning would allow the child to fully develop into their own unique selves, because fundamentally the child will learn only if they are truly interested in the topic. But how do we spot child-led learning in a nursery? Things you can look out for are nonprescriptive use of arts and crafts materials − where the child is allowed to be creative with materials, rather than told what to create − a range of different “real” learning materials within the classroom environment such as photos and replicas of animals; explorations of the parts of a plant; a globe; Math materials the child can hold and manipulate; a carefully prepared environment that allows the child freedom to work independently, and a range of open-ended materials that encourage the child to explore and create.

1 RISE AND SHINE Encourage children to wake up early and start their day at least an hour and a half before they head out to school. This gives them muchneeded time to ready themselves mentally for the day, without rushing.
2 HYGIENIC HABITS From a young age, stress on good hygiene such as regular hand washing and bathing. Children tend to spend a lot of time in the company of others, outdoors and in new environments, so it is essential to maintain good levels of health.
SET A ROUTINE It’s important to set a routine for children, from a young age, to build and nurture entrepreneurs of the future. Navin Valrani, a seasoned education entrepreneur and CEO of Arcadia Education, attributes much of his success to having a structured routine. Find ten simple ways to do so
4
SPEND TIME ON SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Though this may not be as routine, it is important for children to make time to develop their skills - be it creative outlets, sporting options or entrepreneurial endeavours. This is sometimes implemented within the classroom. At Arcadia, we promote this through our Junior MBA Programme for our primary school children, which leads on to the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL) programme for our secondary school students. 38 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
3
TUCK INTO A HEALTHY BREAKFAST Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a reason. It helps boost energy levels and gets the metabolism going. A nutritious meal provides the added benefit of giving children the vitamins and minerals needed to take on challenges throughout the day.
5
A TIME FOR HOMEWORK
While no child warms up naturally to the thought of school work outside the classroom, parents can use discussion-based methods to encourage a homework routine. Discussion is key at Arcadia and our secondary school students benefit from discussion-based learning through our partnership with R.E.A.L. Discussion, focusing on four foundational discussion skills − namely Relate, Excerpt, Ask and Listen − which parents can carry through after school hours.
8
MAKE READING A MUST The best way to build a child’s creativity and diction is to incorporate time to read on a daily basis. There should never be a time where a child says that he or she is not reading a book. It really is critical not only to be reading, but also to be exposing children to different genres.
6 LET THEM DO CHORES Another way to build responsibility amongst children is to assign them certain tasks to oversee. Setting the table, doing the dishes or other such tasks will ensure that they are contributing to family life, and better prepares them for life outside of the home. It also provides them with a sense of responsibility and accountability.
9
PLAY TIME IS ESSENTIAL
7
This is an all-important element of developing social abilities and skills in children. While play dates can be set for younger children, which boosts team-work and communication, it is important to ensure this is seen through the older age groups as well. In a world driven by technology, it is vital that the human connection is valued in the life of a child.
FREE TIME This important aspect gives children the reigns and allows for autonomous thought processes. Families can offer guidelines or suggestions for what might be done during this time, with philanthropic endeavours being a great option to try out.
10 BED TIME Children in nursery or school require adequate amounts of sleep to help them relax and reboot their energy levels each day. Given the array of activities they will encounter on a daily basis, getting in at least eight to ten hours of sleep a night will provide them with the rest needed to take on each new day with much gusto. Armani/SPA There is no shortage of luxury spa choices to explore in Dubai, but something about my experience at Armani/SPA put it a cut above the rest. Located on the hotel’s third floor (inside the world’s tallest building, no less) the spa is decked out in sleek, grey hues, and its design is every inch of minimalist luxe that one would expect from such a high-end, stylish brand. I arrive 15 minutes ahead of my treatment time, and I’m greeted with fresh watermelon juice and a scented cold towel. I make my way to the trendy changing rooms, relaxation room and spa area, where I find two temperature-controlled saunas, a steam room and a cooling ice fountain, making up the spa's sequential bathing area. Outside, there’s a stunning pool with views that span across Downtown Dubai, which are particularly impressive during my evening visit when the city lights up.
Back inside the spa, I’m shown to a dimly-lit, cosy treatment room for my 50-minute classic massage. My therapist recommends an essential oil infused with pink peppercorns for the treatment, which she assures me will enhance muscle relaxation. She begins with a medium pressure along my back, legs and arms. Carefully kneading my stress points, while being cautious to avoid a slight strain in my lower back, she continues with firm strokes across my shoulders, chest and feet, and I leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Be sure to head back to the relaxation room for your post-treatment wind-down, complete with chamomile tea, dried fruits and a good book. There are certainly worse ways to spend an evening! DINING IN THE CITY Hotspots for all ages Mitts & Trays Bluewaters Island, Dubai
A trip to Bluewaters Island is incredibly calming. The serene neighbourhood is flooded with natural light, walkways and stunning views from every corner. If you’re looking for a lunch-spot with the ladies, this is the place to visit. The decor features plenty of netural tones with copper finishing at the coffee and dessert bar. Simple wooden tables allow the dishes to be the highlight of this dining experience, with an international menu that caters to all palates. The homegrown concept serves a menu brimming with pasta dishes, seafood, meat, burgers and plenty more. We began with a kale and walnut salad to whet our appetite, beautifully presented with candied walnuts, dried cranberries, feta cheese for texture and a slight tartness. The second starter could be eaten as a main course as it’s decadent and heavy, but absolutely delish. Cajun spiced fried potato cubes are drizzled with hot demi glaze, and topped with melted cheese, sour cream, jalapenos and scallions. It’s a dish you have to try, so skip snacks or breakfast if you can. For mains, we highly recommend sharing Seabass, a traditional Arabic-style dish with modern influences. The fish is cooked perfectly, with the
grainy pilaf and caramelized onions complementing each bite. Dessert-lovers can share the saffron tres-leches or a wide
variety of cakes. Details: Contact +9714 388 3999
OSH La Mer
My dining partner and I weren’t expecting this modern Uzbekistani restaurant to be incredibly packed on a Sunday night. However, a trip to the star-lit ceiling floor upstairs and a bite of our first starter gave us a clear indication why. The menu features Uyghurs cuisine - combining Central Asian and Uzbekistani food – with views of the stunning beachfront and Burj Khalifa as a backdrop. 48 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Our meal began with hot cherry cottage cheese dumplings - soft little parcels with a sweet-tangy sauce; a generous portion of roasted eggplant salad; and pumpkin and lamb manti - the sweet, meaty parcels take about 20-30 minutes to cook, but they are worth ordering. The starters itself are quite substantial but do leave space for the sweet and sour snapper, charcoal-grilled tender lamb shashlik, and pilaf. This adorable concept store nestled in a villa on Jumeriah road combines a boutique, café and clothing store, bringing together culture and pieces from across the globe. The quirky café is vibrant, bright and airy, with kitsch-like décor touches from the Middle East and Africa. The menu showcases breakfast-style dishes such as mezze, jalapeno eggs Benedict, labneh shakshuka and granola. For lunch and dinner options, pick from salmon fish fingers, linguine with sundried tomato, or the Kulture smash burger. We had the latter, the ultimate cheese burger with noticeably high-quality ingredients. The Angus beef patty is served in a soft bun with cheddar cheese, pickles, a special sauce, and a side of fries. Before you head around the store to admire the art, and shop for everything from summer wear to tableware, perfumes and beauty products, order the fried oreos. These hot batter-fried pieces are served with a sugar glaze which you can drizzle all over – best enjoyed with a cup of coffee. Details: Contact +971 4 399 1790

REVIEW
Rovers – the term used to define guests staying at the hotel – will absolutely love the summer deal at this hotel sited at Dubai Parks and Resorts. Those staying at the hotel can take advantage of having three theme parks and a water park, at their doorstep. It makes for a great stay if you are planning to go on a shopping spree at the Outlet Village too. The bustling, funky hotel isn’t like any other we’ve come across in the city. As you arrive, take a trolley to unload your luggage, park your car, and head to the counter to check in. The lobby is vibrant and airy with graffiti on the walls, a lounge area on one side, bus schedule on display, toys for kids and mini golf by the elevators.
ACCOMMODATION Plush designer beds by Simmons will have you and the kids jumping in the minute you’ll arrive. White and green hues brighten up the cosy room featuring a work desk, clothing rack and luggage wall compartment - besides the washroom with a rain shower. Refillable toiletries add a great eco-friendly touch. Do carry your bedroom slippers along, and keep in mind that after 6pm, the hotel works on a self-service basis for water and other requirements. STYLE CHOICE
To begin with, the style of your room matters. Is it classic, minimalist, retro or contemporary? The table needs to complement the current décor as well as the type of seating you have. Once the coffee table has been selected, include side tables in a matching or coordinating style to balance the room.
MASTER OF MATERIAL
Make sure to determine which materials you like. Do you prefer wood over glass, plastic to aluminum and stone, or maybe you are looking for a combination? If children are using the room, wood is a great option as it is durable however aluminum or molded plastic may also be preferable for easy maintenance and care.
SIZE MATTERS
The coffee table should fit nicely into the room and be to scale. The height of the coffee table should be nearly the same as the sofa seating cushions or ideally a little lower. The larger the sofa, the bigger the coffee table can, and should, be. In large spaces, more than one coffee table can also be used. However, always ensure the coffee table does not block the sofa completely as this can impact the flow of the room.
KEEP IT USEFUL
Think about how the coffee table will be used and choose the one that is ideal for its purpose. Will it be for placing magazines, remote controls and casual dining in front of the TV or is it to be placed in a formal space for entertaining? Safety is an important consideration too, if you have young ones around. Consider a rounded-edge coffee table and be sure there is plenty of space surrounding it, and access to the sofa with no fear of potential accidents.
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
Finally, the most important element in selecting a coffee table is that it gives you pleasure when you walk into the room, not only completing the space but providing the final touch. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | AUGUST 2019 | 55

SMALL GARDENS THAT FEEL BIG
The term landscaping is often associated solely with huge projects when in reality, anything from simply pruning up your backyard to creating a beautiful little garden in a small space is also landscaping. Residential gardening is all the rage now and Saresa Anthonissen, Creative Director, Dubai Garden Centre. shares tips to get a makeover
Colour Scheme
Picking a colour scheme is one of the most basic steps in creating a small garden that looks and feels big. For a tiny space, the monochromatic look has a magnifying effect. Selecting a colour palette based on factors such as the color of your home, season and general tone of the locality and as a result, building a design around this will result in an elegant space.
Accessorize
Use thematic garden accessories to elevate the final look. Accessories can add character and sophistication to the garden and convey your design idea in a better way. Water features can bring in a soothing spa-like effect, providing coolness to the soul in the scorching heat of Dubai. Your garden may be small, but don’t let it deter you from thinking big.
Divide & Rule Segmentation gives structure and organisation to a small space. Small gardens can be made to look spacious and interesting by dividing it into different areas with various mini focal points. The 58 | AUGUST 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
divisions need not be sharp or even obvious. It can be done by narrow pebble-pathways or slight changes in terrain, something that will make the garden look interesting from all the sides.
Negative Space
This is a concept of great interest in the art world. Space surrounding the object in focus is called negative space and designing this efficiently can bring positive results. In your garden, the object in focus are the plants, flowers and accessories. Planning negative space brings balance to the garden. For a multi-storey villa, designing the negative space creatively will provide a great view when seen from above.
Light Fixtures Entertaining, in Dubai, often extends late into the night. Don’t forget to dress up your garden with beautiful light fixtures. You can transition from a delightful evening tea in the garden to a night-time garden soiree with elegant lights. Complement the lighting with pretty candles and candle holders to add a warm magical glow to the whole setup.

FIVE REASONS TO GROOM YOUR DOG REGULARLY Many people think that grooming their dog is just a way of pampering them, but it actually enhances your dog’s overall health and wellbeing. Shaheen Shahani, Managing Partner of Shampooch discusses why it not only keeps them clean, but happy too MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | AUGUST 2019 | 59

1
IMPROVES APPEARANCE AND HYGIENE Although this may seem superficial, bathing your dog regularly helps remove any dirt from their coat and helps them feel and look their best. Grooming your dog also helps prevent painful matting from tangled, unbrushed fur, and long nails that can cause discomfort. Bathing and grooming also helps repress any unpleasant odours on your dog that can linger in your home. It is a win-win for everybody!
2
CONTROLS SHEDDING
A common issue that can be well managed through regular grooming, shedding cannot be completely avoided but daily brushing and conditioning your dogs’ coat can help reduce it drastically. A common misconception is that shaving your dog can help combat this. The truth is shaving can be extremely harmful as it will damage your dogs’ coat and hinder the way they regulate their body temperature. A professional groomer will use the de-shedding technique of brushing to remove the dead fur on your dog. This stimulates the production of natural oils that keep your pooch’s coat beautiful, strong and healthy.
3
DETECT MEDICAL ISSUES EARLY
will check your pooches’ ears, eyes and teeth and may notice something that would require a visit to the vet. Many serious illnesses can be prevented through early detection and regularly grooming your dog can help do that.
4
AVOID DENTAL PROBLEMS
Your pooch’s dental health can have a huge impact on their overall physical wellbeing. Brushing their teeth regularly helps remove the buildup of plaque and avoids the unnecessary expenses of a professional teeth cleaning.
5
HELPS WITH SOCIALIZATION
Dogs come in a variety of personalities and temperaments. Some rescues may not be as comfortable with being touched and as a result, the simple act of bathing them can result in tension or stress. Regular grooming helps a dog get more used to being touched and understand that touch does not result in pain. Of course, the earlier that you can start, the better. We typically recommend grooming your dog every four to six weeks. This varies from breed to breed and is also dependent on their lifestyle. If they are long-haired or spend a lot of time outdoors, they would require more frequent grooming as opposed to a pooch that is mostly indoors. At Shampooch, we carefully assess these factors and can recommend the right grooming and frequency for your dog.
