Find out how pregnant women and mums manage work-life balance. Our cover star discloses her journey and tips

12 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

12 MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR HOSPITAL BAG September to December are popular birth months in the UAE and if your baby is arriving soon, read on to find out what to pack in your pregnancy hospital bag for you & your little one! It’s a truth universally accepted that when pregnant, packing your hospital bag is one of those things it’s hard to get around to. But worry not, we’ve compiled a hospital bag checklist so you can see what you need, to feel prepared for your big day (and the good news is – it really isn’t that much).

WHAT TO PACK IN YOUR PREGNANCY HOSPITAL BAG – FOR MOM WHAT TO PACK IN YOUR PREGNANCY • Your maternity notes, birth plan and UAE documentation HOSPITAL BAG - FOR YOUR BABY So the healthcare professionals and midwives are clued up on what you want and need. Don’t forget your passport, Emirates ID, attested Marriage Certificate and Insurance card for any hospital processes.

• Comfortable PJs and slippers You may like the idea of wearing new silk pyjamas when receiving hospital visitors, however, comfort is the only thing you’ll care about post-birth. (Tip – take a couple of PJs for different temperatures as you never know whether the maternity ward will be cold or warm). • Underwear Big cotton underwear (disposable paper ones are uncomfortable) and maternity pads, plus nursing bra and breast pads. • Music/tablets/books It’s a good idea to have something to pass the time and/or help relax you during labor. Listening to your favorite tunes or reading a good book will help soothe those nerves. • Toiletries Just some travel-sized essentials will do - shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and brush, moisturizer and lip balm. • Snacks/drinks A couple of healthy snacks and drinks at hand will satiate your hunger pangs, if any.

• Clothes, bonnets and a blanket A couple of newborn baby clothes and bonnets, along with a pair of booties, mittens and a blanket – cellular ones are a good idea – are must-haves. • Baby wipes The closest alternative to cotton wool and water, WaterWipes are the world’s purest baby wipes; the number one choice for newborn skin. These wipes contain only two ingredients – 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract making it safe to use on sensitive and premature babies’ skin. • Muslins and Diapers A good stock of diapers in the bag will be beneficial, as well as the muslin cloth for cleaning up the various fluids there’s sure to be.

WATERWIPES ARE THE ONLY BABY WIPES AWARDED BY SEVERAL ASSOCIATIONS: • Allergy UK • The National Eczema Associaton of America (NEA) • Gold Winner of Mother Baby & Child Awards 2018 as Baby Wipe Brand of the year • AssociatIon Française pour la Prévention des Allergies – AFPRAL • The Eczema Association of Australasia (EAA) • Registered with Vegan Society

• Going-home outfit The clothes you arrived to the hospital in might be a bit worse for wear, so something clean and comfy for going home in is a good idea. • Phone and charger Because how else are you going to let everyone know ‘MY BABY HAS ARRIVED!!’?

Available at leading retail outlets across the UAE. For more information, please visit https://www.waterwipes.com/ae Powered by:

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be

LOLLA TODOROVIC

A sports physiotherapist, spartan race global brand ambassador and a rescue scuba diver

DECEMBER

Quite a month full of accomplishments on so many levels. I finished my second Trifecta in Spartan race in Oman, won the podium position and after all these active months, I couldn’t wait to enjoy my Holiday season. Christmas Jingles came on, decorations prepared, and a quick fun Santa gift run was on my calendar. Christmas Day came by and I enjoyed the miraculous vibes and the festivities, the food, the laughs and all the family fun. After that, of course, preparation for New Year’s Eve. I had a lot on my mind and was feeling bit tired and sleeping often, for a longer time, with a little sense of nausea once I woke up. In my head, it was all probably from the long racing season and the Trifecta competitions (around 60 km of obstacles course racing in 14 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

48 hours) and the long season of racing and completing two marathons and countless numbers of runs and races, so, it made sense.

JANUARY New Year’s Eve was amazing, my husband and I were out celebrating and welcoming the New Year having fun, dancing and enjoying the moment. Caught in the moment of festivities I almost forgot that my last period was somewhere at the beginning end of November and we were at the first week of January and nothing in the horizon except the weird sleeping. I wondered if it was possible. Must’ve been the Christmas blessings and a mark of an amazing new year for both of us. First things first, I thought, let me check. I ran to pharmacy got three types of pregnancy tests

just to be sure, tried them all and all confirmed my suspicions. Yes! I was pregnant. Now, to tell him or not to tell him, that was the question? I decided to but had to figure out how and when. His birthday was around the corner and what could be more surprising than this joyful news. With a heart flooded with joy and eyes filled with tears we celebrated my husband’s birthday.

FEBRUARY-MARCH The first detailed scan of our little bundle of joy, My doctor was very articulated and detailed in her first scan - I had a mixed feeling of joy and fear. I was going to see this little one, I was expecting to see a full fledge baby, but the moment the scanner touched my belly I started to have goosebumps in this happily anxious way to see my baby for the first time. I saw a round dark shape, with nothing of what I had in mind. That shape had two tiny leg and hand shapes, and was jumping in my belly, and then to add another layer of emotions I couldn’t get a grip of myself when she put the volume on loud to hear the fast heart beats "dom dom dom". It was just exhilarating. I was very happy to know that everything is normal and just as it should be.

APRIL – JUNE Despite what I heard from my family and friends about morning sickness, nausea, and other pregnancy syndromes, I did well for a first-time pregnancy so far. My nausea was to the minimum and I felt active. In early April, I saw there was a Spartan Race in Abu Dhabi, for Stadium Edition, so after I consulted with my husband and checked with my doctor, I decided to participate and yes I did it, but I was very careful and took it easy. I was so happy and felt the satisfying sense of accomplishment. After this amazing experience it was time for a detailed scan for the baby by which we had the choice to know the gender of the baby. It’s a boy! My husband and I were so happy and joyful, for the fact that the baby is doing well.

JULY-AUGUST During this period of time in Dubai, it’s very hot and humidity reaches its peak, so technically

we barely go out and do any outdoor activity. I managed to keep my active life by adopting the indoor TRX excising and some yoga in addition to some walks every now and then, when the weather allows. I started to be more maternal in my instincts, I have this urge of preparation and of what is known as nesting urge, so I bought baby clothes, covers, the crib, stroller and all the possible accessories that you might think of, and you might not think of, as well. I cannot wait until September, and guess what, I am a September girl myself too. Baby Noah and I will be born in the same month and if we are lucky, we might even be born on the same date which is September 2. Now I am anxiously waiting to see this little one and be ready to hug, kiss, smell and take care of him (Yes, my hormones are talking now) and I am very emotional yet very reasonable and cautious by all means. PREGNANY Rocks!

24 HOURS IN THE LIFE OF A MUM AMY POWER

Owner of Namaste Baby (Parent & Baby Wellness classes) 16 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

6-9AM

I usually wake up around 6am (sometimes earlier!) and begin the day. I start by getting my eldest daughter’s breakfast ready and then make a start on everyone’s snacks and lunches for the day. After that, I sit down, give my baby Alma her milk and breakfast, before having a quick coffee and a bit of brekkie for myself.

so I have plenty of freezer stock to pull out when I don’t have time to cook.

2-7PM

9-10AM

May heads off to nursery at nine, so on the days where I have a class, I use this time to set the room for when the parents arrive with their little ones. A quick once over with the hoover and moving of some furniture and the room is then ready for the mats, treasure baskets, handouts and refreshments. Before everyone arrives, I try and squeeze in a quick meditation to prepare myself and get in the zone.

10-12PM

Class time. I welcome the mamas and babies and wait for them to get settled and comfortable on their mats, we have a little chat and then begin the massage. At the end of the routine I like to do some self-care for the mums either in the form of a guided meditation or muscle relaxation. We end with drinks and snacks and discuss any concerns or hurdles they may have encountered in motherhood. On a class-free day, I use this time to spend some quality time with Alma.

I collect May from nursery at 3pm and we spend the next couple of hours playing, at soft play or in the pool. From 5pm onwards it's dinner, bath time and then bedtime. I usually manage to get back downstairs after putting the girls down at around 7:30pm.

8-9PM

Study time. I am currently doing a diploma to further my services at Namaste Baby, so I try and squeeze in an hour of study time in the evenings, if I’m not too exhausted from the day.

9-10PM

This is my time to sit down and unwind, spend some time with hubby and catch up with our favourite T.V. shows. I usually end up falling asleep around this time too.

12-2PM

While the baby has a long lunchtime nap, I cook our evening meals. My slow cooker is my best friend at the moment! My go-to meals are chillies, curries and stews - all packed with lots of veggies and beans/pulses. I like to batch-cook MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2019 | 17

ALL THINGS MEDIA AND MOTHERHOOD Dina Butti takes us through her life off set and discusses why Dubai is the best city to raise children in

E

gyptian/Canadian Dina Butti has German roots, was born in Greece and has since, lived all over the world. Married to an Emirati-American, the first thing she’s quick to point out is how confused her kids are about their nationality. “Honestly, my husband and I are both still confused about our own traditions and culture too, so we're a bit of a 'celebrate it all' kind of family.” As a child, Dina moved around every couple of years, but as much as she learned from roaming the world, she’d love a chance for her own kids to grow up a bit more settled. "Living in Dubai is already so multicultural, so hopefully they'll gain similar experiences to my own just by being here. We take it for granted that we can just let them mingle with strangers and roam around MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2019 | 19

P A R E N T I N G

places we go without being worried - that is invaluable and a big reason as to why we may never leave Dubai,” she says. Dina’s parents moved to the UAE - while she was still in university in Montreal - just as her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Dina spent her breaks in Dubai, to help take care of her, and interned at INTV and CNN Arabia. "Those internships were massive opportunities for me and gave me lots of firsts. My first on-air reports, first red-carpet coverage and first celebrity interview! Once I graduated, it was an easy decision to move to the UAE where I landed my first job at MTV Arabia,” she tells me, while her two boys play in the background. A quick look at Dina’s social media pages, and you will spot the mummy hilariously entertaining her children with dance videos, doing chores with them – with superhero masks on (brilliant idea!) – and out and about with her family. “Most of my career life was spent presenting for Dubai One TV (where I also met my husband), but I transitioned into the freelance life during my pregnancy. I still present and

produce tons of videos alongside my boys for social media, do voice overs and occasionally emcee events like award ceremonies,” says Dina.

Like most mamas, I’ve discovered the idea of achieving the perfect balance is a fantasy

20 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Finding that career and home life balance took ages for Dina, but luckily, she has carved a successful career that allows her to bring her boys into work. “Depending on their moods that is, it’s either my biggest accomplishment or my biggest mistake. Like most mamas, I’ve discovered the idea of achieving the perfect balance is a fantasy and that no matter what I do, I somehow feel guilty (working on that),” she says. Dina gets to manage her hours, a position she feels quite lucky to be in, but she also finds herself up at night editing videos and finishing up work. Most days she gets woken up around 6am, by loud yelling, and the parents find themselves in a mad rush to get everyone ready for the day. “We drop off Mush (the older child) to school, while Smush (little one) usually hangs out with our awesome nanny Norma so that he can take his nap at home. I try to do any voice overs or

editing during this time and reserve any family filming for later or weekends when the hubby is there to help,” she tells me. The family love hanging out at the park, followed by messy bath time for the kids, a debrief of each of their days during dinner, a couple of tantrums about not wanting to go to bed and then finally sleep. Once the boys are tucked in, Dina and her husband zone out in front of a solid session of Netflix while munching. While she hasn’t scored any good shortcuts for motherhood as yet, she has learned overtime that becoming super comfortable and asking for help has been her saviour. “All pride has been tossed out the window since this journey started,” she admits. “I figured that when I became a grown-up, I wouldn’t rely on my parents so much, but I feel like I need them now more than ever. There is no way I could do even half as much as I do if they weren’t there helping me run errands, picking up the kids and filling in as production assistants whenever we’re filming. Also, the emotional support.” She reveals an account of one of her weekends, where she burst into tears in the middle of Dubai Mall and the only thing that calmed her down was her mother. “Just because I’m in my 30s doesn’t mean I don’t need some mama cuddles too, right?” a statement most mums would agree with. Overtime she has also realised that kids often think of their parents as perfect and it sets unreasonable expectations. "Even though my eldest is only four, lately I’ve been letting him see me cry more, I share my flaws and I put myself on timeout when I need it. I’ve noticed it’s developed his compassion and I hope it’ll eventually teach him to be more forgiving with himself, as well as with me when I make mistakes,” she says. "Whenever times are tough, I try to remind myself that there are lessons I am meant to gain from these experiences that will ultimately benefit me." Dina is quite a spiritual person and believes that if you are compassionate and offer kindness to others, that the universe will reward you. These beliefs give her faith that even if it may not be what she envisioned for herself, she is carving out the perfect journey.

“Gait” is the clinical term used for “walk”. There is so much that happens in the foot and leg as the child's limb develops, but not all of it goes according to plan. Parents usually take their children in for a check-up with concerns that their child's feet looks flat, turns inwards or outwards, or that they experience pain in one or both legs after exercising. Often, this pain can be worse at night causing the child to wake up, which is quite distressing for both parents and the child. “This used to be termed "growing pains" by those who had no idea what it was,” says Dr Charlotte Hawkins PhD, Founder & CEO of Infant Club Foot Appeal. Dr Hawkins has been in practice as a consultant in Harley Street, London, UK, for the past 30 years and specialises in paedatric lower limb development and gait. In simpler terms, her focus is on how a child's foot and leg develop and how that child walks. If anything is not right with that development, Dr Hawkins helps the child’s foot function in order to stop it from merely existing, or future foot and leg pain. “I spend half of my time treating the most povertystricken children in Africa, through my own charity the Infant Club Foot Appeal. So far, we have treated 2,500 children within the past nine years. It’s wonderful to be able to treat children in such great need, it provides a good balance in life.”

These aches and pains should not be ignored and without treatment, could go on to cause further, more complex issues during development

In recent years, Dr. Hawkins has noticed an increase in clientele from the Middle East. Her view is there are hundreds, if 26 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

not thousands of children who suffer with leg pain during their development, due to a poor understanding of lower limb development and the growing pain myth. “Many of my patients are from the Middle East, as there is an awareness of these "growing pains " and its true meaning is better understood now than ever before,” she says. “I can’t fail to be impressed by all of the Middle East and UAE families that I see. They are not afraid to seek the right treatment for their children, they have a real ‘can do’ attitude.” These aches and pains should not be ignored and without treatment, could go on to cause further, more complex issues during development. The list is extensive and includes Osgood Schlatters disease, Chondromalacia patellae, Anterior Tibial Syndrome, Plantar fasciitis, Severs Disease and Juevenile Hallux valgus. Other common issues relate to hypermobility or ligamentous laxity, "stretchy tendons" - often a paediatric bespoke orthotic can provide the correction that is needed. If you are worried about the way your child walks or if your child has foot and leg pain, Dr Charlotte suggests taking your child in for a gait test. “This is usually something that requires attention, not pushed aside in hope. Be sure to seek the correct advice and approach your GP or Paediatrican for guidance and don't take ‘growing pains’ as an answer,” she firmly advises.

Key life skills include: • Creativity and imagination • Leadership and personal development • Citizenship • Critical thinking and problem solving • Digital literacy • Collaboration and communication

Gareth Newman, Director English Language Services at the British Council, says, “In order to future-proof their skills and develop into successful and confident individuals, children today need more than English proficiency. They need to learn how to be agile and resilient, so they can explore higher education opportunities abroad and become part of a highly mobile and competitive labour market, as well as enter into jobs which do not yet exist.” Investing in the early year’s education of your child has the biggest impact. There is strong scientific evidence that shows that this is the period when the brain undergoes its greatest development, and investment in early education facilitates children’s long-term success on their academic journey and later life. Give your child a head start by equipping them with essential life skills for future challenges. Primary Plus provides an inspiring environment with interactive classes and creative projects that spark a love of learning and promote expertise in English. By incorporating real-life topics that relate to children’s personal experiences, the programme aims to improve their language naturally and arouse an interest in exploring the world using English. Taught by British Council specialists who are world experts in English language teaching, Primary Plus is a module-based, six-level series of courses with ageappropriate themes and topics that match stages of child development. Classes are designed to be lively, fun and challenging, with teachers encouraging freedom of expression in a safe and conducive environment. Courses are now open for registration. TEACHER’S PROFILE

DR. CHRISTINE JACOB

Head of Languages at Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai (SISD) How did you get into teaching? I grew up in a family of teachers. My parents and many of my cousins are/were teachers. I loved going to school and decided that I wanted to be a lifelong learner. As I decided to follow into the family tradition, I realised that I had been right: as you sit on the other side of the classroom, as a teacher, you never stop learning.

What excites you about your role? After more than 25 years in education, I still thrive on being surrounded by young people. I am inspired by their curiosity, their capacity of enquiry and their contagious enthusiasm. I’m convinced that a good education and broad general knowledge are essential keys to success. As Head of Languages and as a Language teacher, I like to think that I’m contributing to better communication between people. I strongly believe that speaking foreign languages and valuing different cultures enriches life and makes it easier.

Your great achievement over the course of your career? Getting Swiss German students to love French literature and educating them to read and appreciate texts – and not only those on movies with subtitles.

Any challenges you face? As a language teacher, I find it sad that most young people rely solely on English 30 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

to communicate. Many mother tongues are disappearing. Language and culture are closely related. It’s important to maintain and promote the diversity of languages, in order to uphold your intrinsic values.

How do you get students interested in the subjects that you teach? As a teacher, you need to stick to a program – which is not always compatible with the students’ interests. It’s important to make the students understand why what they are learning is important. Away from the traditional way of teaching, it’s also important to consider the students’ own interests and motivation, and to rely on them while teaching. Additionally, I would say that teachers must also show some understanding of students who are not interested in their subject. In such cases, it is useful to set precise learning objectives adapted to the student’s learning preferences and abilities.

One thing you would change about the educational system? Regarding language teaching, I would promote exchanges with other schools, and students speaking another language. Languages can’t be learned only in books, practice is important. The immersion into another language and another culture makes the additional language acquisition more effective, e.g. students learn vocabulary because they need it to understand and be understood. They develop openmindedness and grow up as world citizens.

ASK THE PRINCIPAL EMMA DEAKIN

Nursery Director at Willow Nursery, Dubai Marina How did you begin your career in education? I first started my career back in the UK when I was only 16 years old (I`m now 33). As soon as I left school, I knew I wanted to work with children. I firstly worked as an apprentice to gain my qualifications in childcare. This took me nearly three years. I then worked my way up in the same nursery group to be a Deputy Manager, and after six years at the company and more training, I took on the Nursery Manager at another nursery, and have been a Manger/Principal ever since.

How long have you been at this nursery and where were you prior to this? I have worked at Willow nursery in the Dubai Marina for three and a half years and love every minute. Before Willow, I was a principal for a brand new nursery in Dubai at the time and was part of the set up team, which was very exciting.

What curriculum is on offer? We follow the British curriculum – the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

What sets your nursery apart from others in the city? I know that most principals say this, however I honestly do feel that the team you build together sets you apart. The knowledge and the kindness we show our families at Willow shows through in everything we do. We have mutual core values that are shared within our Willow community. I feel that the trust we build with our families is of upmost importance and why we have children coming back year after year.

Any specific activities offered at the nursery? As we are in the Dubai Marina, we do pride ourselves on the fantastic outdoor space we

have. It is very unusual to have a nursery with a big outdoor area. We also have a unique service using our `Willow Buggies` which allows parents to drop their children off at certain places. We then bring them to nursery in our buggy. The buggies are from the UK and are very safe and of course, fun for the children.

What should parents keep in mind when enrolling their children at your nursery? We are part of a group of nurseries called

32 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Kids First Group, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. We follow the Reggio Emilia approach alongside our curriculum. We have babies from 45 days old until FS1 and are open all year round - great for working parents. Additionally, we have flexible timings and a unique induction program that allows both parent and child to settle in their own time, which builds trust and has proven to be successful. Throughout the year, parents can join in on our many stay and play sessions and be part of our activities. At Willow Marina, you really do become part of our family.

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION

Barry Cooper, Deputy Head Academic at Brighton College Dubai discusses the influx of tech in education and how it’s paving the way to the future

34 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

With the advancements of technology being introduced at an increasing speed, every day brings another innovation in the classroom. The best of these are those that supplement traditional teaching in a way that gives the children a new perspective. “Education relies on good, old-fashioned learning, but it is delivered with every modern technique and tactic we can find. From laboratories to robotics, iPads to iMacs, smartboards to software; we value and utilise technology, using it to help our students achieve the most out of their studies. Technology for some learners is a tool that significantly reduces barriers that they may have to learning. This has given greater confidence and capacity to some pupils to present and develop their work to a much deeper level. There must also be a focus, not only on tech being used in the classroom, but also on tech being taught in the classroom as a subject. We need to give children the tools that they need to use the ever-advancing technology that is available to them, as it is inevitably going to be a huge part of their personal and professional lives. It is worth pointing out, that tech hasn’t taken

over classroom leaning as yet. In the best schools it hasn’t, and it never will. In the modern word we are facing a danger of technology replacing or becoming a substitute for teaching techniques. Technology should always be used as a tool that only supplements this. The iPad is simply the chalk and slate of the twenty first century, not the replacement of it. Children need to learn skills from people in real life so they can adapt and apply the skills themselves. There are emerging trends that add value to the classroom. Virtual Reality technology, for instance, will be the next big trend in schools. VR promotes curiosity and wonder and opens doors to so many experiences both in the past and the present for children to access. For example, VR gives children the opportunity to travel all over the world, experience careers, develop empathy, explore the ocean and the vastness of space, and even explore the human body - making it an important supplement to any curriculum. In order to encourage children to pick up a device, I highly recommend parents to learn with their children. Asking children to help and to explain things about technology will always persuade them to learn and develop their skills. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2019 | 35

ROAD SAFETY TIPS

This time of year is often spent in the car, driving to take that long-awaited staycation, or catch up with friends and family. Travelling with a baby can make this journey slightly complicated. Here, Suzanne Brown, Co-founder of ClevaMama ( baby products retailer) has put together her top tips to make the journey enjoyable for everyone

1

PREPARE YOUR CAR

2

Make sure your vehicle is safe and ready for the long ride. Fill up the tank, check the tire pressure, change the oil if needed - the last thing you want is to break down with your baby in tow.

MAP OUT YOUR REST STOPS No one likes to be cooped up in a car for too long, and it is very important to be prepared to stop every couple of hours to take your baby out of the car seat for a break. You might want to schedule your stops around baby's feedings to make planning easier.

CAR SEATS CAN GET HOT

To keep your baby safe and help him/her in case of a crash, modern car seats are now being made padded and heavy. This can cause an issue with car seats getting too hot, particularly on a sunny day. Always make sure to travel in the morning or evening to avoid the worst of the heat. Dress the baby very lightly, and in layers (not many), which can be quickly and easily removed and remember to cool down the car before you head out - run the air-con for a few minutes. It’s also advisable to get window shades to protect baby from the sun, pat your baby down with a damp cloth before your journey, and pull over for hydration breaks.

4 CONSIDER BUYING A BABY MIRROR Set it up so you can see your baby clearly from the front seat and they can see you.

46 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

10

PACK WATER AND SNACKS FOR YOURSELF Particularly if you are breastfeeding, you need to eat, and drink water regularly to hydrate and fuel milk production.

FOCUS ON ENTERTAINMENT You want to keep your baby happy during this trip to avoid on-the-road meltdowns. Try decorating your windows with some brightly coloured removable images – careful not to choose anything so large that it interferes with your ability to see. Bring their favourite toys and books, but don't let them have all of them at once. For older babies and toddlers, let them enjoy their favourite shows on a tablet.

8 FEED AND CHANGE YOUR BABY BEFORE YOU LEAVE Take care of your baby’s basic needs before you start driving. If your baby is warm, dry, and fed, he or she will be more likely to tolerate the drive. Moreover, you’ll be able to get a good start and drive without having to stop prematurely.

7 BRING A FIRST-AID KIT It's always wise to be prepared just in case a mishap occurs. Take any prescription medications that your baby requires, medicines in case a fever occurs or the baby is teething, diaper rash treatment, and, of course, bandages and first-aid ointment.

KEEP IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS HANDY

5

PACK WISELY AND IN A LARGE CHANGING BAG (SEPARATE FROM YOUR LUGGAGE) On top of the usual baby stuff you'll need during the trip (diapers, wipes, etc.), bring along a change of clothes, a blanket/lovey (or anything that helps your baby sleep well), snacks, and a rubbish bag to toss things like dirty diapers and empty cups.

6

Make sure you have phone numbers for your paediatrician and emergency services handy. You probably won’t need them, but just in case your baby gets sick or an emergency arises, it’s nice to have them on hand.

Cinq Mondes Spa Emerald Palace Kempinski Dubai

The architecture of this hotel doesn't reveal the opulence indoors. Inspired by 18th century palaces in Europe, the palatial lobby features intricate gold details and a chandelier with over 40,000 Swarovski crystals - you will be at a loss for words! Take a left and head to Cinq Mondes Spa, where you are transported to a world of complete serenity. The Parisian spa features the most gorgeous entrance, with symmetrical corridors and soft lighting. At the reception, I’m treated to a cold towel, fresh fruit and water, while I pick my treatment – the Deep-Relaxing Balinese massage. The sprawling space is one you can wander around for hours, with walls opening up to treatment rooms. After scrubbing my tired feet with a reviving scrub, I was taken to the heated bed to knead away tension from my legs and shoulders. Having walked more than my usual steps per day, while travelling, my feet were swollen, aching and in desperate need of a massage. All products used combine state-of-the-art cosmetology and are free from parabens, silicone and mineral oils.

50 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

My organic and natural Tropical Nuts Melting body balm had a subtle scent and was incredibly nourishing for my parched skin. The treatment began with the sound of a bell, two deep breaths, a gentle press and rotations of the arms and feet. The masseuse began with my upper back – as it was taut with tension – pushing out the knots with slow movements and acupuncture. The relaxing massage moved downwards, to focus on my legs, drain the water retention and soothe my feet. The masseuse pressed her elbows and arms slowly into my thighs and calves, moving along with long strokes to correct the issue from deep down under the surface. I snoozed while the head massage took place, before it ended with another bell. I headed straight for the sauna and warm room facilities, while taking in every gorgeous aspect of the spa. I’ll be taking my swimmers along next time, to make use of the hotel’s indoor pool – the largest in the UAE. Dhs550 for 50-minutes treatment. Contact +971 4 248 8800 to make a booking.

Family Staycation Take a trip to this Northern emirate for a relaxing stay at Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa

An unwinding path leads you to the palatial grounds of this seaside resort. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort and Spa boasts a selection of guest rooms and suite villas with direct access to the beach, offering up to four bedrooms and a pool in some – for those who want complete privacy.

CULINARY OFFERINGS Authentic Italian fare is served at Placeri de Gustare, making it a great spot for couples looking for an intimate dinner while the children tuck into freshly prepared pizzas. Children are kept entertained with the action in the open kitchen, while nibbling on the buffalo mozzarella salad; a classic served with marinated cherry tomato salad, avocado and lemon dressing. Share a pizza – the bresaola came in highly recommended and was incredibly mouthwatering. For the pasta course, go simple with the cacio e pepe. The sauce has the right amount of flavour, highlighting each ingredient, with textures such as toasted breadcrumbs coming out to play every once in a while. Leave room for their decadent tiramisu. Breakfast is served buffet-style at Maeda; a casual eatery filled with natural sunlight. The usual offerings are on offer, with views of the Arabian Gulf – dine al fresco if the weather permits.

ACCOMMODATION The Deluxe Suite Villa with beach access is spacious enough for a family of four. Located in a villa of the resort, the suite opens up to the washroom with a large bath tub and walk-in shower on the left, a private living area with a terrace that sprawls out to the sun beds and beach, and a sliding door that separates the living room and bedroom. FACILITIES The Spa at Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa is a tranquil haven nestled in a building between the suites and the main reception. An extensive range of therapeutic spa treatments are available, from massages to customised facials. Since climatic conditions and summer travels dehydrate skin, opt for the 60-minutes Hydrating Facial. Esse products are used, for a natural treatment to replenish parched skin. The facialist begins by cleansing the face thoroughly with a sensitive cleaner, followed by a gel cleanser to remove every trace of dirt and makeup. A cocoa exfoliator sloughs off dead skin cells to reveal fresh skin. The facial focuses on fueling your skin with probiotics and botanicals to restore the moisture for a plump, dewy complexion. A cream mask is then applied on to penetrate the skin’s surface and reveal that inner glow along with an eye contour mask to tackle fine lines. After the toner and serum, a facial massage cream is applied all over to boost circulation, with certain techniques for lymphatic drainage. The treatment ends with eye and lip treatment, and you can head straight for the relaxation room to feel invigorated. The resort offers plenty of services and facilities for little ones including a kid’s club and pool and babysitting. Adults can try kayaking, paddle table tennis, and a range of activities at the water sports centre. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2019 | 57

Mirrors have many unique abilities. They can expand a space, reflect beauty, and double or multiply the energy of an area. The energy of a room is vital to comfort - a good mirror placement can reflect and disperse incoming energy to its surroundings. Believe it or not, the most suitable place for mirrors is in your dining room, ideally, placed on a large wall above the buffet. A Feng Shui rule says that this placement increases abundance and wealth as it reflects the food on your table. In the case of living rooms, we recommend placing mirrors above the sofa or a smaller one on a side wall. Not only will this give extra depth into your living space, but also beautiful dimension. When hanging a mirror, you never want to have a mirror that is wider than the sofa below, as it will overpower the piece. We love the look of mirrors at the entrance of a home, ideally on top of a console. It adds an extra touch of decor to the space and of course, great for a quick touch-up before heading out for the day!

READY FOR A ROAD TRIP WITH YOUR PET? Pets are family and they would thoroughly enjoy a day out to Hatta or the beach with you. Hitesh Thawani, Pet expert and Managing Partner of Precious Paws (a Thai spa-themed pet boutique) reveals a few useful tips while planning a road trip with your pet

62 | SEPTEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

PETS Whilst you think the process of taking your pet out might be exhausting, with just a few tips, you could possibly have an amazing experience with your four-legged ball of fur. As you include pets in your holiday plans, it is important to tick off a few boxes including checking the hotel’s pet policy and packing the right equipment. Keep these in mind:

A SEAT FOR YOUR PET While you may think of giving plenty of room to your pet in your car, a carrier for smaller pets and a seat belt is of utmost importance considering their safety. Giving them a confided space will make them more comfortable than letting them slide unstrapped in the backseat of the car. Moreover, irrespective of the place you are enjoying your little staycation, it is better to carry a travel bed for your pet as they are more accustomed to the usual routine. A carrier is perfect for smaller pets as this will encourage them to relax in a specific place and will not give them any sort of motion sickness.

MEET THE VET Checking with your pet’s vet and getting all the necessary vaccinations done right before travel is always smart. In fact, make sure to get your pets microchipped as you never know when they might sprint away while halting at a rest stop. Also, don’t forget to carry some motion sickness meds as long road trips can make your pets extremely nauseous, anxious and restless.

MAKE FREQUENT PIT-STOPS If you are planning to hit the road with your pet, it is necessary to make a few pit-stops every one to two hours, depending on how well your pet is house trained. In these small halts, ensure to walk your pet for at least five to ten minutes so that they don’t get restless or cranky. Also, make sure to carry a small amount of food and constantly feed your companion with loads of water to keep them hydrated at all points.

ENGAGE YOUR PET WITH TOYS While you gear up for some great road trip games and jamming to music, you cannot expect your pet to stay idle on a multi-hour road trip. It is best to keep your pet occupied with some activity toys. A chew toy or a dog-safe bone would be just perfect. However, if you aren’t very comfortable taking your pet to explore Dubai, Precious Paws offers day-care and night facilities. So, while you enjoy a little vacation-time, your pets will be well taken care of and occupied with their friends. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2019 | 63
