My birthday month is here! I’m one of those women who shout it from a rooftop. Along with my special day, there’s a lot to look forward to this month. The temperature starts to drop, al fresco brunches and gatherings begin, and I can finally enjoy long walks by the beach again. Find out what this mum is looking forward to (page 13). The October issue focuses on Education. Discover which curriculum is the best for your child (page 38) and why early childhood learning is significant for babies and toddlers (page 40). We also touch upon breast cancer, in the health section (page 25), and childhood obesity (page 29) both of which are growing at an alarming rate in the region. Our cover stars of the month are twins, mums and Founders of Pastel Cakes, who were born and raised in the UAE. Find out how these self-taught bakers manage work-life balance - from page 18. As usual, we have the latest trends, shopping finds, dining recommendations, décor tips, and a Halloween spread your children will love (page 55).

Colette Barr and Leona Collins, Founders of Save Our World (a Dubai-based female-led company) are encouraging children to learn about the environment and become eco-friendly. Their latest adventure ‘The Eco-heroes and The Plastic Planet’, is the third book from the collection, available in English and Arabic. A great gift for those trying to teach their children how plastic is present in so many aspects of our daily lives without us realising the impact. The novel is filled with plenty of humour, touches on traditional local culture, family and friendship, whilst delivering a clear message on plastic pollution and ocean conservation. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OCTOBER? Our mum of the month reveals everything she’s looking forward to

T

here’s every reason to be excited about October. Not only is it my 40th, at the end of the month, but it’s finally time to enjoy the great outdoors. After a long hot Dubai summer, the good weather is on the horizon, although it probably won’t be until midOctober that we can really fully enjoy it.

LAURA BUCKWELL Event MC

Dubai is on its best form when the weather gets cooler and outdoor activities are in full force. Along with different attractions opening up again, I’m looking forward to park and beach life the most, with picnics galore. To eat al fresco is going to be such a treat. Kite Beach will come alive again and with a beach tennismad husband we will certainly be popping down most weekends, as well as an occasional visit to the restaurants, markets and beaches across JBR and La Mer. Although Privilee pools have been our saving grace over the summer, it’s time to bring out our membership cards again for beach access. They recently added The Anantara to their partner hotels so I’m very much looking forward to checking it out. I’m also looking forward to the outdoor markets, especially the Ripe Market on October 25th at the Police academy, and the biggest market of them all at Global Village on October 29th. Oh, and guess what? October also means we are only a few months away from Christmas. And I’m sure the music and festive gift displays will be across all of the shops next month too. Love it! Here’s to the after-school play dates and weekends outside.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be

NATALIE KRISH

Qualified primary teacher and PE Teacher at Brighton College Al Ain

JUNE

I realised I was pregnant during a family holiday to Thailand. I looked in the mirror and my breasts were literally bulging out of my bikini top. Seriously? Already? But it had taken a year of trying to get pregnant with our first child, Jacob. I decided not to mention it to my other half straight away, as I wanted to get back home and do a test first (Cue: nervously locking myself into the bathroom the minute we touched down). It didn’t take a second for those two lines to appear and my emotions to start somersaulting. I came out of the bathroom and lay down next to my beautiful sleeping toddler, wrapped my arms around him and sobbed. He suddenly seemed so grown up and there were so many questions on my mind. How would I be able to love another like I love 14 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

him? Would he feel pushed out? Would it affect our relationship? How would I care for two children and work? How would we afford it? Would I have another emergency C-section and what would happen to our living arrangements - we’re both teachers overseas. It was overwhelming and the 'unknown unknowns’ loomed large for me. But for my husband, it was the opposite. He was absolutely overjoyed. I hoped it would rub off.

JULY

What followed was a mix of extreme nausea (not helped by crazy heat), horrific anxiety and the worst bloating. I was also finding it really hard to hide at work. I struggled physically and mentally. Before I found out I was pregnant, I’d been feeling so fit and healthy. I was enjoying

being able to push myself, and being totally honest, liked my body for the first time in a long time. The fact that my body was changing so quickly was getting me down this time. Every run I did was hard, which made me not want to do it anymore. Every outfit I wore required at least five changes. I had to wear more makeup to hide breakouts. I despised my growing breasts and wider hips. Why couldn’t men do it the second time round? It didn’t seem fair.

AUGUST

We flew home to England for the summer holidays and it was such a relief to escape the desert heat. Telling family was different, too. There were mixed reactions and lots of questions, many of which we didn’t know how to answer. I would smile and be excited in front of people, but behind closed doors I would double over with worry and I felt like I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. I was supposed to be happy and enjoying every second of pregnancy, wasn’t I? I felt so guilty. Was I damaging the baby? Would our bond be as strong? How could I feel this way when there were couples struggling to conceive? Another child had always been on the cards, but I couldn’t help but ask myself if it was the right time. But then I remembered that there never really is a ‘right time’. We get what we’re given, and I had a tiny person growing inside me. Maybe it was time to embrace it and see where it might lead. We decided to find out the gender by booking a private scan. We wanted our son to know if he was having a baby brother or sister, and for us to announce it with our family and friends. Bang. Blue. Mixed emotions ran through my head. Brothers. Another loving boy. Finally: a ‘known’. But a tinge of sadness for the un-walked path too – no daughter. I hope I’m not a terrible person for thinking like this.

SEPTEMBER

I am 19 weeks and the bump is well and truly here. Having him properly present in my day has helped - I feel like I can start bonding with him. I feel more positive. He moved for the first time this week while Jacob was teaching him

about diggers. It was magical and I felt those butterflies I’d been longing to feel. He really is in there. I’ve joined a prenatal yoga class and it has been wonderful to have time for just me and my bump to connect. It’s been a tough few months, but the love I feel for my baby boy is undefinable. I’ve done a bit of reading and found that most pregnant women have anxious moments. That it’s normal to worry whether your baby will be healthy at birth, whether you will be a good parent and whether you will be able to provide for your child, as well as having fears about labour. This doesn’t make us bad mothers and it certainly doesn’t mean we don’t love our babies. I haven’t decided about my birth plan yet and there are some big decisions ahead. But what I hope for is a healthy and happy baby (and a sleeper, this time please?) and, hopefully, the rest will fall into place.

I was supposed to be happy and enjoying every second of pregnancy, wasn’t I? I felt so guilty

P A R E N T I N G

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITY FOR YOUR CHILD With ever-increasing options and all the potential benefits associated with extra-curricular activities, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Banu Akca and Zeynep Guney, Founders of UrbanCircle (urbancircle.ae) ‒ an online platform with over 400 verified services for kids − share their tips to making the right choices, so that kids are happy and engaged

1 2 3 TALK TO YOUR KIDS Understand their interests and ask for their preferences before signing up. There might be a mismatch between your desires and theirs and that’s alright. Don’t push them into something they don't want to do. Present the option, explain the benefits and encourage, but never force, them. It’s also fine for them to try different things and stop some along the way. They can always specialise as they get older.

CONSIDER YOUR CHILD’S CHARACTER Identify what you want them to achieve and if it suits their personality. Is the aim to relax and have fun after a busy school day or to excel in an area they are already strong in? Do you want to boost their confidence, or teach them to become a team player? Try to balance your goals and be cautious of having too many challenging activities at once.

16 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

MAKE SURE THE LOGISTICS AND TIMELINES WORK There is no point in signing up for an activity that you know you won’t make on time and stressing everyone out. Younger kids especially might already be tired after school, so make sure they’re physically and mentally ready for the activity. Try to consider weekend options if necessary.

4 5 GET FEEDBACK FROM OTHER FAMILIES Recommendations always help, so ask other people who send their child to the same activity. Understand why they were or were not happy, what the teacher’s style is like and whether it would be a good fit for your child. For children, it is often about the teacher more than the activity itself.

6

8

EVALUATE THE PRICE AND TIME COMMITMENT Think about whether it is suitable for your budget and consider any additional costs. Do a trial before committing and ask what the options are, if you need to drop out for some reason. Check the makeup class policy in case of absence.

7

CONGRATULATE YOUR EXPLORER Show them how proud you are for trying new things and stepping out of their comfort zone - it is a big step. Your child might not be the next Mozart or Ronaldo as yet, but what matters is they are trying their best, keeping themselves active and happy.

STAY AND WATCH If possible, attend some of the sessions to see how the class is run and how they’re doing. If not, talk to your child after every session to make sure things are going smoothly and discuss any potential issues.

DON’T FILL EVERY HOUR Remember to make room for family time, as well as "just being kids” play at home or the park. Unstructured play is just as important for developing skills as after-school activities. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | OCTOBER 2019 | 17

A SPECIAL BOND Twins, mums and the duo behind Pastel Cakes, Maha and Nada Safa, grew up in the UAE. Here they discuss what it’s like to own a bakery and raise children in the city they call home “Our parents are both from Lebanon, but we call Dubai home. We were both born and raised here and love the opportunities this country has allowed us to pursue. But, although we were born here, we embrace our Lebanese roots and draw inspiration from our backgrounds within our baking,” Maha and Nada Safa tell me as we gather at Nada’s home in Green Community. The children have just come home from school, and with self-taught bakers as mums, there’s always a treat around. The duo learned how to bake by constantly watching their mother in the kitchen. “Eventually we started to bake alongside her to learn all her tips and tricks. Every weekend, our mother would bake a different kind of cake - she would let us help her, and as we grew older, Maha started perfecting the recipes and baking and I grew an eye for detail, taking care of the overall aesthetic,” says Nada, mum to Joy Ballout (4) and Ryan Ballout (7). The twins collectively have backgrounds in Business Administration, Marketing, and the Culinary Arts.

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | OCTOBER 2019 | 19

P A R E N T I N G

While the mums love baking, their most integral role is being mothers. “It’s the most rewarding role in life, next to being CoFounding twins! When the kids are in school, we are busy managing the business and when they come home, our roles switch to mum,” says Maha, mum to Shadi Al Masri (7). Pastel Cakes is their labour of love. It launched in 2016 and was conceptualised on their journey through motherhood and shared passion for baking. “We decided to join forces and become ‘baking partners-in-crime.’ Since then, we have seen great success, now delivering to over four thousand customers per month. We have no plans of slowing down anytime soon,” the twins tell me. For those who have just been introduced to the bakery, they accommodate almost every dietary need: vegan, keto, gluten-free, you name it. The inspiration behind the café began when they were organising their children's birthday parties. “Instead of the traditional way of planning, we realised that we had pushed everything aside, focused on the cake, and planned the rest accordingly. Ever since then, we were obsessed,” explains the twins. As we chat, I wonder if the twins ever get mixed up – they are identical after all! “ Yes, a lot actually! It’s funny when people we don’t know come to us and talk and then realise it’s the other twin they know,” says Nada. Every day brings a new adventure, but the twins tell me they adhere by a set routine during the week. Like any family, it’s getting the kids up and ready, school drop offs, fit in a workout and then it’s all about Pastel Cakes until the evening, when they head home to spend time with the kids. “Finding that work-life balance, for the both of us, is so important. We both make sure that we schedule all of our meetings during the day when our children are at school. That way, we can spend the rest of the day with them and have our special time together when we’ve all worked hard at the end of the day,” says Maha. Juggling motherhood and business is something that a lot of mothers are faced with. The twins feel that every mother is different and needs to discover what uniquely works for them and their family. “For us both, we understand that having your own business means you’re constantly working. However,

our kids are always our number one priority and we have learned to manage our time and the best way to do it is through a routine,” they tell me. The one thing that they agree they have both changed on since becoming mothers, is their perspectives on life. They have learned to enjoy life through their curious eyes and the importance of rising to any occasion. Being mothers gave them an excuse to stay young forever through their experience of childhood, while enjoying a love beyond measure.

20 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

As the children play and pose for pictures, I try to find out handy mummy tricks for our readers. The twins laugh and tell me “You can get anything done through storytelling and play. We use this trick with our kids, and it works most of the time.” As for advice for other mums, Maha and Nada believe in trusting their instincts. “Never compare yourself to other mums. Just be the best mother to your child as you can be. For us, it’s quite simple. During meltdowns, a simple hug can change everything,” they reveal while playing with their little ones.

COPING WITH INFANT TROUBLES When healthy babies get sick, panic amongst parents sets in, especially firsttime parents. Occasional infections and fever are inevitable; however, when it gets more serious, that’s a cause of concern for everyone. Dealing with infants and toddlers, makes it even harder on some parents. A common problem amongst toddlers is diarrhea, especially during the teething phase or when they contract a viral infection

Diarrhea can last for days and can come about from something in a baby’s diet, or infection or a stomach bug. Although diarrhea is common and usually passes on its own, the most important thing is to ensure your baby is drinking enough of fluids to avoid dehydration (including breastmilk if they are being breastfed). In severe cases, it’s best to contact your health care practitioner.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR? 1. If your baby is under 12 months old and has diarrhea and/or vomiting

2. If your baby has more than five bouts of diarrhea or vomits more than three times in 24 hours 3. Consistent vomiting and unable to retain any fluid in the body 4. Is still dehydrated despite using oral rehydration sachets 5. Baby’s stools are very loose and watery

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR BABY’S SKIN Even though this isn’t a nice time for you and really not a great time for your baby either, due to the constant passing of stools against their delicate skin means more chance of nappy rash. It’s more important than ever to keep on top of changing your baby’s nappy if they have diarrhea and that’s where WaterWipes can help. Created by a father who was extremely concerned about his own daughter’s nappy rash, the wipes contain just water and a drop of fruit extract and are the world’s purest baby wipes. This may be a frustrating time but oh so-common for parents, so remember – you’re not alone. In case of diarrhea, soothing your baby and baby’s bottom will be taken care of by WaterWipes. And if you are ever concerned about your baby’s condition, always consult your midwife or doctor immediately.

WATERWIPES ARE THE ONLY BABY WIPES AWARDED BY SEVERAL ASSOCIATIONS:

ABOUT WATERWIPES: WaterWipes, a global Irish brand, are the world’s purest baby wipes made with only two ingredients, 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract. WaterWipes were created by a concerned father looking for a better baby wipe after discovering his newborn suffered from nappy rash and sensitive skin. They are available in all major retailers. 5 WAYS AIR POLLUTION HARMS CHILDREN Research shows that unclean air affects new-borns’ development in various ways. “A few small steps can help parents mitigate its impact,” says T R Ganesh, General Manager – Middle East & Africa at Blueair You can’t build on a weak foundation, and the same holds true for human beings. The first 1,000 days of a child’s life, from the moment of conception until the age of two, are critical. Healthcare advice has rightly focused on the nutrition of pregnant women and new-born children, but new research shows that clean air is fundamental to a child’s physical and cognitive development. A two-year-old’s brain is twice as active as an adult’s brain, building bridges to connect the nerve cells in the brain for future use. Naturally, there is much focus on child nutrition and development during the first 1,000 days, with governments around the world highlighting the need for enhanced care over this period. Unfortunately, increasing industrialisation, vehicular exhaust and environmental damage leave more children at risk by rising levels of air pollution. UNICEF estimates that 17 million babies under the age of one, worldwide, breathe toxic air. Air pollution exposure takes its toll on an individual’s health in numerous ways, starting in the womb.

Miscarriage

Unclean air can have a fatal effect. An increase of just 10 parts per billion in seven-day average levels of nitrogen dioxide was associated with a 16 per cent increase in spontaneous pregnancy loss, of 1,400 women, according to a report by Fertility and Sterility.

Premature birth

When pregnant women regularly inhale common pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter of less than 10 and 2.5 microns, their babies are 3 per cent more likely to be born prematurely – as stated in Environmental Research Volume 117. Preterm babies can suffer lifelong effects such as cerebral palsy and Intellectual disability.

Low birth weight

As air pollution levels increase, the risk of low birth weight increases correspondingly, up to 15 per cent. This contributes to the risk of diabetes, obesity

and cardiovascular disease as well as neurodevelopmental problems. More than 20 million infants worldwide are born each year at a low birth weight.

Childhood asthma

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) research suggests that current levels of air pollution are associated with asthma development and illness among children. In addition, it appears that increasing temperatures and CO2 concentrations may be associated with increased pollen concentrations and allergenicity of pollens.

Hypertension and cardiovascular disease The American Heart Association indicates that foetuses exposed to higher levels of air pollution during the third trimester of gestation had a higher risk of elevated blood pressure in childhood – which often leads to high blood pressure in adulthood. This is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease.

Early-life protection against air pollution While industrial pollution and climatic factors may be out of our control, parents can take action to improve the health of their infants. Young children and pregnant women also tend to spend more time indoors, where the air is up to five times more polluted. Take these measures at home: • Ensure proper ventilation when using cleaning products, air fresheners and home pesticide sprays, and keep your home free from mould. • Avoid investing in new furniture or a car, due to the risk from toxic particles and microplastics. • Invest in an air purifier to improve indoor air quality and reduce pollutants. • Garages that store cars and lawnmowers should be well ventilated. • Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke. INTERACTIVE MUM'S MORNING

Three insightful presentations focused on key health concerns during our latest Dubai London Clinic event

Dubai mums gathered at Dubai London Clinic Villa Centro late last month for an insightful closed-door discussion on all things oral health and gynaecology. During the interactive event, doctors from the clinic offered advice on the child vaccine regime, dental health for both children and adults, and the importance of regular breast screening. Speaking on the controversies

that have recently made the headlines surrounding vaccinations, Dr. David Egbert – specialist paediatrician at DLC, spoke of his personal experiences in dealing with cases in both the UAE and Canada that have reaffirmed his belief in the effectiveness of various vaccinations. “If you’re considering the first flu vaccination for your baby, it can be given any time after reaching the age of six months,” he said. “The first vaccine requires two shots, one month apart – subsequently after this, the vaccination MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | OCTOBER 2019 | 25

should be conducted annually.” Dr. Nuno Sarmento, general dentist, discussed tips to instil a healthy dental regime in both children and adults. He advised that to reduce the build up of bacterial plaque, teeth should be brushed after every meal using a fluoride toothpaste. If this is not possible, he suggested chewing a sugar-free gum or washing your mouth out with fluoride mouthwash after meals. Finally, Dr. Nada Altabara, a gynaecology specialist with more than 20 years’ experience, spoke very timely about the importance of breast screening, ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness month this October. She reaffirmed the need to build awareness and advised mums to “know what is normal for you” when conducting self-examinations, but to notify doctors of any abnormalities as soon as possible. She also stated that clinical breast exams, conducted by a doctor, should be carried out yearly from the age of 20, with mammograms recommended every two years after the age of 40. Two mums walked away with fabulous raffle prizes as the event drew to a close; Duaa Al Haddad was gifted a Dhs1,000 voucher to use on cosmetic dental treatment at Dubai London Clinic, and Emily Turnbull won a Mother, Baby & Child magazine subscription.

THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION LABELLING

At Waitrose & Partners it’s all about paying close attention to the details, which is why the Good Health labelling was introduced in 2018, making it easier for mums to make healthier choices for their little ones

We know it’s not just calories we need to look out for, if we want to eat well, it’s the overall balance of nutrients. Which is why the traffic light labels on many pre-packaged food and drinks at Waitrose & Partners and other retailers can be so empowering. This is a simple colour-coding system, ideal for when you’re short of time. Simply choose products with mainly green and amber lights for a healthier choice. The Good Health label is a handy shortcut that tells you straight away whether a product is a healthy choice. Any product bearing the label will provide a clear nutritional benefit, helping you get what your body requires. A product must meet the government guidelines on fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt – so you won’t see any red traffic lights, unless the fats or sugars are naturally present in nuts and fruit. The Good Health label complements the traffic light label by highlighting the nutritional benefit on healthy choices.

HOW TO READ A LABEL

The trio of colours: The red, amber and green colours show, at a glance, whether a product is high, medium or low in fat, contains saturates, sugars or salt. Use the colour-coding to compare two products. Sizing up portions: Check the pack for portion size. It might be per pack, per half pack, or per 100g – whichever it is, you’ll need to know to make the right choices. Daily calories: Check the pack for how many calories there are in a portion and in 100g of the product. Aim to stay below the daily allowance or recommended intake (RI) of 2,000 caloraies (kcal) per day.

Source of Fibre: If it’s high in fibre, it contains more than 6g fibre per 100g. The source of fibre should contain more than 3g per 100g. Protein: Your protein should be at least 12% of the energy value of the food (20% for high protein). Fat: Low in fat products are less than 3% fat, containing no more than 3g total fat per 100g. Low in saturated fat are less than 1.5% saturated fat, containing no more than 1.5g saturated fat per 100g. Reduced fat is 30% less fat than a standard, similar product, and Fat free is less than 0.5% fat, containing no more than 0.5g total fat per 100g Omega 3 (high in omega 3): This icon is displayed on fresh oily fish such as trout, salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna, as well as canned fish in oils (excluding tuna) and fortified products such as eggs, milk and yoghurt.

28 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Vitamins and Minerals: We need over 40 different kinds of vitamins and minerals every day for good health. Eat a wide variety of foods every day, so that it provides at least 30% of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) for the vitamin or mineral, per 100g or per single portion. The source of vitamins and minerals should provide at least 15% of the NRV for the vitamin or mineral, per 100g or per single portion. Five-a-day: Aim for five portions each day. Your diet should contain at least 80g of fresh, frozen or canned fruit or vegetable, or 25g dried fruit.

THE COMPLICATIONS INVOLVED WITH CHILDHOOD OBESITY The prevalence of childhood obesity continues to increase in the UAE. Here Dr Mohammed Al Hadad, Head of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Consultant Bariatric Surgeon at Healthpoint, discusses the life-long effects MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | OCTOBER 2019 | 29

H E A L T H

According to the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention’s latest statistics, the prevalence of obesity amongst children between the ages of 5-17 was an alarming 14.45%, at 2018. The risk factors for childhood obesity are numerous, but lifestyle factors such as sedentary behaviour and unhealthy eating habits are a major cause. In addition, mental factors such as stressful life events, depression and other psychological problems can lead to overeating or eating disorders, and as a result, may also lead to childhood obesity. Additionally, medical factors like genetics, family history and endocrine disorders may play a role. It is also important to highlight that there is now an understanding among the medical community that overweight parents are more likely to have overweight children. The complex hormonal or metabolic factors causing the link are not yet fully understood, but there is certainly a case for offering obesity treatment as part of the pre-natal care available to expectant mothers. Physical effects of childhood obesity include a reduced quality of life and an increased risk of developing other comorbidities or physical conditions such as bone and joint diseases, heart diseases, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, trouble sleeping and sleep apnea, breathing problems, metabolic syndrome and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Mental and psychological consequences of obesity in children can also include lower self-esteem and body dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety and disordered eating amongst other illnesses or disorders. Unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles are largely to blame. Children spend most of their time at school and this is where most of their lifestyle habits, that survive to adulthood, are established. This is why school-based nutritional policies and programs that encourage and teach healthy eating habits among children are vital. Physical activity lessons and education in or after-school have also been shown to be successful in preventing childhood obesity. Tackling obesity is a long journey that requires great determination, and the involvement and cooperation of

many parties. Aside from the child’s own commitment, schools, doctors and parents also have a role to play. While teaching children about healthy lifestyle choices is important, it is not enough. Our children follow in our footsteps and our lifestyle habits are passed down to them. I always tell parents to set the right example by

eating healthily and exercising. I encourage the whole family to have balanced diets and engage in physical activities together. However, it is never a good idea to blame or shame your child for being obese or overweight. Only psychological support and acceptance will help to tackle the issue.

TEACHER’S PROFILE

SOPHIE BIRCH

Class Teacher at Victory Heights Primary School How did you get into teaching? This is pretty cliché, but ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. With my whiteboard easel safely stored in my bedroom, I would rush eagerly upstairs to teach my 'class'. I remember saving all of my pocket money just so I could go to the local stationary store to buy whiteboard markers. It was always a good day when the pens were on offer. I even went as far as completing pieces of work to mark; whipping out my red gel pen and providing my well thought out written feedback. For me, teaching is a vocation. I cannot think of anything else I would rather do. I feel so lucky to love my job!

What excites you about your role? I am one of the lucky ones. Every day I wake up excited to go to work. I know that may sound ridiculous but seeing my class, making them smile and motivated to learn, truly brings me joy. Being a teacher is so rewarding when you see the progress ‒ social and emotional included ‒ children make. It's an incredible feeling.

Any challenges you face? In teaching, there will always be challenges. I feel so grateful that I have an amazing team of teachers around me who can help me tackle any challenges I may face. Of course, like any job, there are days when the admin piles up. However, I try to remember that it is the children who I must always prioritise and such jobs always seem to get done in the end.

Your greatest achievements over the course of the year? Personally, I feel that my greatest achievement is the relationship I build with my pupils, I know that I leave a lasting impression on them. Being a teacher isn't just educating, it's caring, nurturing and supporting your pupils. Having taught in schools where unfortunately not all pupils have come from loving, privileged backgrounds, building positive relationships has been vital to creating a safe learning environment.

How do you get students interested in the subjects that you teach? I think my passion and enthusiasm keeps my pupils interested when I'm teaching. My class would probably tell you that I'm crazy; I sing and dance (not very well), prance around, teach in different accents - Welsh seems to be their favourite. When possible, I also get the children up out of their chairs and involved in their learning. There's never a dull day.

One thing you would like to change about the education system. Currently, I feel very fortunate as I work in a school who value the mental health of their staff. Because of this, there's not really much I would change. Obviously, this isn't the case in all schools, and I think that all over the world teachers struggle with managing workload and the general pressures of teaching. Therefore, it is really important that schools invest in their staff's mental wellbeing to ensure positive working environments for all. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | OCTOBER 2019 | 33

ASK THE PRINCIPAL DR NEIL HOPKIN Principal, Sunmarke School

How did you begin your career in education? Both of my parents were educators and I saw how demanding it was to be a teacher, so decided to work in the technology industry as a software engineer. However, over time I came to realise that in both work and hobbies I was actually teaching, so it was time to respond to my calling. That was 25 years ago, and I have enjoyed every moment since. I started my teaching in Kew, Richmond upon Thames, London, opposite the world-famous Kew Gardens.

How long have you been at this school and where were you prior to this? This is my first term as the new Principal of Sunmarke School, which is a post that I am very excited about. Prior to that I was Principal at The British International School Shanghai, China, and prior to that at Dover Court International School, Singapore. So, I have been very fortunate to work in two of the highest performing educational provinces in the world and I am able to bring that wealth of knowledge here to Sunmarke School. Before that I had a series of headships in the UK and was advisor to two Deputy Prime Ministers and three secretaries of state around areas of early years education and the use of new technologies in schools, amongst other subjects.

Please tell us about the school’s curriculum. We have a fantastic offer at Sunmarke and are able to tailor a programme for anyone. We follow the English National Curriculum until 16 years of age, which is world renowned for being thorough, with ambitious standards and expectations, as well as interesting and motivating for learners. This culminates in the GCSE examination, which acts as a springboard for great 16+ options. Sunmarke students are able to pursue the BTEC programme, which equips them for a wonderful career through some inspiring ‘real world’ experiences, or they can follow the traditional ‘A’ level route,

which allows students to choose very specific areas of study,. We have also started offering the IB Diploma or career-related pathways for students that are searching for world class preparation for academic and professional futures. It really is an amazingly diverse offer,

34 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

all taught by teachers who are at the very top of their profession.

What sets your school apart? Sunmarke School recognises that excellence can only come from diligent hard work over

intelligence and strength of character to be the highest performers in all aspects of their lives. No other school in Dubai, or the Middle East, has our understanding and history of development with Positive Education and, as a result, no one else can offer students the support that we can offer to ‘be amazing’.

Any specific activities on offer? We have an excellent STEAM facility which supports students’ development in Design Thinking, and which is the defining design philosophy across global industries today. We also have astonishing Performing Arts facilities and an inspirational arts department that affords every student an opportunity to express themselves. Together these two areas enable our students to develop their Creativity, Collaboration and Confidence in ways that often leave their parents envious and wanting to return to school themselves. We also have a wonderful financial and business entrepreneurship programme which supports the ingenious minds of many of our students, whilst for our younger students we have the most wonderful early years setting you will ever see.

Any notable achievements from the students in the past? Our students achieve many wonderful ambitions during their time with us, but two key achievements stand out. Firstly, our excellent education means that ultimately, they get to attend the universities of their choice, across the world, including Russell Group universities in the UK and illustrious universities such as Carnegie Mellon in the USA. However, equally importantly, our students also develop into rounded personalities of whom we can all be proud. Nowhere is this more heartwarming than in our Sports Heroes Academy work where our students support people of determination in achieving their own sporting ambitions.

What should parents keep in mind when enrolling their children at your school?

the years. Our outstanding examination results are matched by the extraordinary Positive Education that has been the bedrock of our approach since the school was founded. This is a philosophy that has achieved the elusive and unique balance of driving hard

for outstanding academic results whilst building the students’ character and heart. We believe in this two-pronged approach since we know that employers no longer seek only the highest graded students, but also those that are equipped with the emotional

Your child only gets one chance at schooling. Their academic success is as much a reflection of their character development as it is of their intellect. Therefore, when determining what constitutes the best possible place for your child, the development of their mind and character could not be in better hands than Sunmarke School.

ECO-FRIENDLY WARRIORS With climate change being a hot topic, it’s important to touch upon the cause of our actions. While recycling and avoiding plastic are baby steps, we should become more conscious of our purchases too. Here Elli Kasbi, Founder of Elli Junior, discusses the significance of choosing sustainable options for your children How is eco-awareness and social responsibility a part of your philosophy? Most of our products are made with the intention of having a much longer lifespan than average. Our new collection is made from 100 per cent organic bamboo or 100 per cent organic cotton. We want to bring you the best quality at the most affordable price. We support that by paying a little more for our materials.

Why is it important for mums to buy ecofriendly and sustainable products for their children? By choosing sustainable and eco-friendly products, you are helping to save our planets resources. We aim to produce all products as responsibly and sustainably as possible. This is a continuing process. A broad and long-term environmental approach is taken to our entire business, which is a constant factor in decision-making at all levels. Our goal is to have a 100% sustainable company. Mums, you will support a better world with less waste, reduced consumption and reduced energy consumption. So, buy responsibly and create a big ecological difference in your life.

When shopping for toys, should mums choose wood over plastic varieties? No matter what you choose for your child it’s important

to understand the benefits of wood and disadvantages of plastic. We try to not bring in plastic toys and offer a variety of toys that can be used for generations to come. Wooden toys are made to last and future siblings will be able to use the same toys. Furthermore, they will even be in a good condition for you to put them away for your grandchildren. We work with solid wood products that are non-toxic and harmless for your child. So, if it falls down, it won’t break and fall apart. If you are looking for durable toys, it’s important to invest a little more for quality. Plastic can be toxic, so we try to not use any plastic. Besides, its bad for the environment too. By using wooden toys, you can also educate them on the harmful effects of plastic and teach our future leaders by being a good role model.

Top 3 baby items that should always be eco-friendly? Building blocks - to learn the alphabet and numbers in a simple way. Baby walker – These act as the perfect support for babies who have started learning to walk, but also works as a toy in itself and to place other toys in and drive around, even for slightly older children. Blankets - An organic fabric that only gets softer with each wash and has great temperature controlling properties. Elli Junior is a one-stop baby shop offering a unique selection of high quality Swedish organic accessories, toys and interiors. THE BEST CURRICULUM? Neil Matthews, Principal/CEO at GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail discusses the various curricula on offer in the region, and how to select one that’s best for your child

38 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Choosing the right school for your child is a very important decision for a parent. Given the large number of schools offering a wide range of curricula in the UAE, this decision is made much harder. Across the network of over 40 schools in the UAE within the GEMS Education group itself, we offer the UK, American, IB and CBSE curricula. The UK Curriculum (or National Curriculum for England) provides a broad and balanced range of subjects with an emphasis on student-centred learning. Student progress is carefully tracked and achievement across all subject areas is promoted. GCSE and A-Level courses are studied in Secondary School requiring students to select a number of subjects to pursue. The American Curriculum also focuses on high standards of achievement in all areas. In American Curriculum schools, progress is benchmarked against standardised tests which lead to the SAT exams and advanced placement test for admission to universities. The International Baccalaureate or IB is designed to offer a well-rounded, internationally-focused curriculum with a growing emphasis on independent research at the Diploma level. The Indian or CBSE Curriculum has a high focus on academics covering a wide ability range. It is seen as a highly supportive curriculum which encourages every student to reach their full potential. When deciding upon a curriculum for your child, the factors to consider would include how long your plan is to be in the UAE and future destinations for your family - whether you are looking for a broad curriculum or a more focused route and the aspirations of your child. In the Early Years, there is very little variation in curricula as the emphasis is on learning through play and developing key social skills. As children progress through school, the decision around curriculum becomes more important as this will have an impact when moving to a new country and considering higher education and university destinations. My best piece of advice when deciding upon the right school and curriculum for your child is to visit your shortlist of schools. Each school has a unique ‘feel’ and by visiting, meeting staff and seeing learning in action, the decision to be made will often be much easier.

EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING Shehla Bridle, Managing Director at Jebel Ali Village Nursery Group touches upon the significance of nursery and how it develops a child’s skill set 40 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Attending nursery is incredibly important for infants as there are certain advantages. The essential one is that they learn social and emotional skills and also learn to socialise with other children. The right age to begin nursery varies, as there are many different reasons for a child attending nursery. For example, parents have to work, or parents feel the child needs the social interaction. Most parents enroll their children between 1.5 and 2 to 2.5 years. The question most people ask is why do I need to send my child to nursery? My answer is always that it prepares children for primary school. It furthers a child’s development of social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs and it helps to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing. At nursery, we begin by encouraging children's motivation and enthusiasm for learning, and support them in developing skills to promote their learning. By building self-assurance and self-esteem, they help the child to become independent learners developing their confidence in whatever they do. The preschool teacher will also develop a child’s emotional wellbeing and allow the child to develop as an individual becoming confident and secure. Research, according to new Oxford University, has found that children of all backgrounds, who receive a preschool education, are almost twice as likely to go on to sixth form and sit A levels.

In addition to this, the benefits do extend beyond the children, to their parents and families. Many programs will focus on the family by helping parents to support their children, with the intention of helping the parents to establish more stable and secure lives for themselves and their families. Parents who are part of a strong preschool program will become involved in their child’s education and development and will find ways to aid their children with lifelong skills. Transitioning from no children to children, sacrifices a lot and many parents find this very hard to deal with. The reality is that a parent finds their own identity, while the child starts to learn theirs, and the quality time the parent has together with the child will be more meaningful. Children become more independent and are able to take care of themselves. Preschool also boosts language pre-math and literacy skills. That said, finding good quality childcare or preschool can be a difficult task for parents. There are lots of things to look out for and to remember to ask when they visit a childcare setting. Such questions as ‘How do I know if my child will be happy? Will they cater for my child's needs? Do they provide feedback? What if my child doesn't like it?’ The things to look for in any nursery is a welcoming smile and happy, environment with resources that will engage children. There are many preferences for parents - outdoor play area, extra activities such as ballet, French, or sport. These are very personal, and a parent knows their child the best and whether a certain environment is the right place. The key is to find somewhere that you are comfortable with and feel that your child will be content with too.

And magic it certainly is – my hair instantly feels distinctly smoother, silkier and more hydrated.

Following my greeting by salon owner Kiran and her wonderfully hospitable team, I make my way to the right-hand side of the salon for my first treatment (the salon is divided into two halves – hair treatments on one side, and nails, facials, massages and waxing on the opposite side.) First up is the signature deep cleansing facial. My therapist Christina beings with a basic cleanse before she starts to exfoliate any dead skin cells. After applying a serum to my face to enable skin recovery post-exfoliation, she adds a cooling aloe gel to moisturise and re-hydrate

Staycation: The Abu Dhabi EDITION We journey to Abu Dhabi for a weekend in the city to check out the trendy Abu Dhabi EDITION at Al Bateen Marina

Situated in the heart of the UAE capital, the Abu Dhabi EDITION is a waterfront oasis that offers a chic, urban getaway for both couples and families alike. The property opened last November, so is still very much in its infancy compared to some of the more established, well-known hotels in Abu Dhabi. But nonetheless, those looking for a luxurious minibreak – with fantastic onsite dining offerings, two outdoor swimming pools and a stateof-the-art spa facility - needn’t look any further than the EDITION’s solo Middle Eastern outlet.

brass fixtures, a standalone bath-tub, rainfall shower and without a doubt the comfiest hotel robe (courtesy of La Bottega) that I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying – perfect for slipping into after a hot soak post-dinner. One of two outdoor pools at the EDITION can be spotted from the balcony, as well as sweeping views of Al Bateen Marina and its surrounding urban architecture.

CULINARY OFFERINGS The EDITION is certainly not short of top-quality dining options for its guests. Overseen by British Michelin star chef, Tom Aikens, its three main outlets offer a plethora of cuisines and dining styles to suit all occasions. For an intimate dinner with your other half, we’d recommend heading to The Oak Room; a dimly-lit, stately-style restaurant with oak panelled walls, large leather chairs and gold details. For starters, the seared hand-dived scallops, served with piccalilli and curried flavours, are cooked to perfection and form a well-rounded, light

ACCOMMODATION The deluxe marina room is perfect for a couple’s retreat, while the twobedroom apartment will comfortably house a family of four for a weekend break. The marina room features subtle nods to the UAE’s local heritage throughout; expect stunning snaps of sand dune artwork on the walls, and grey oak timber flooring that draws inspiration from local basket weaving techniques. The bathroom features white marble surfaces with contrasting 50 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

REVIEW charcuterie board – which features a selection of cheese, olives, confit tomatoes and cold cuts; our favourite is the slightly spiced wagyu chorizo. The truffle pizza steals the show during the main course, topped with ricotta and mozzarella cheese, and sweet caramelised onions that contrast the earthy truffle taste. Breakfast is served in chef Tom’s third outlet at the property: Market. The menu takes a healthy approach to kick-starting the day (there’s no traditional English fry-up in sight) and it’s certainly quality over quantity here as everything is ordered individually off the menu, with no buffet in sight. If you’re after a light bite, try the acai bowl – packed with fresh fruit, coconut shavings and goji berries. For something more substantial to set you up for a day of sunbathing or exploring the capital’s numerous attractions, try the breakfast burrito with crushed avocado and sweet potato, or the chia seed and coconut waffles with spiced honey and coconut yoghurt if you have a sweet tooth.

and tasty dish. Before selecting your cut of choice for main course, be sure to speak to Charlie Grainger – the Oak Room’s resident meat sommelier, and the only known chef in the role across the region. Full of enthusiasm and an abundance of culinary knowledge, it’s no wonder Tom Aikens headhunted him after a chance landing on Grainger’s meaty Instagram profile. After much deliberation, we opt for the Little Joe Tomahawk, served medium rare. Not for the faint hearted, this 1kg hunk of grass fed, grade 4+ beef is cut tableside by Charlie himself, each slice revealing the shimmery red hues of a beautifully cooked steak. Perfectly paired sides are aplenty; we opt for the short-rib mac and cheese, wagyu chips and creamy peppercorn sauce – all of which are delicious.

The spa at The Abu Dhabi EDITION features separate zones for men and women, each consisting of seven treatment rooms including two Hammams, a facial room and couple’s treatment suite. In keeping with the local theme seen in the guest rooms, the amenities found in the spa keep locality in mind; dates from Ras Al Khaimah, salts drawn from the Arabian sea in Abu Dhabi, and products including Hammamii – which is freshly made in the UAE using all-natural, locally sourced ingredients and camel’s milk. It’s worth noting that the EDITION spa is the only spa in the UAE offering the Himalayan Sound Therapy, which every guest is invited to try regardless of their treatment booking. Signature treatments also include the Warm Himalayan Salt Stone Therapy, which emits 84 essential minerals into the system using Himalayan salt stones and Tibetan healing bowls alongside a carefully curated menu of specialist treatments.

For a lighter, daytime affair, head to Tom Aikens’ day-to-night Mediterranean concept, Alba Terrace. Its Friday brunch offers a selection of fresh, vibrant dishes that bring modern Mediterranean cooking to the table. Highlights from the starters include the burrata – served from a cheese trolley alongside an 8-year aged balsamic vinegar, and the

The hotel also offers two swimming pools, an indoor fitness centre, and a bespoke Cavicchi gold leaf billiard table in the main lobby for when it’s too warm for outdoor activities!

Samar Habayeb, Founder of Silsal Design House, shares her top tips for throwing the perfect tea party

SP OT LIGHT

TEA PARTY ACCESSORIES

The Linear teapot, Dhs59 at Home Centre

The Basics The first thing you’ll need for any tea party is a cake stand. Lemon cakes and Victoria sponges look gorgeous on our mint green cake stand. The second is a tea set – mix and match your favourite teapots, sugar bowls, creamers, cups and saucers. Tea Time Select a variety, but always include at least one black tea, one green and one floral blend. I like to keep things seasonal and opt for citrus fusions in summer, and apple and cinnamon brews come fall.

Tea parties are back, in a big way. But, there’s so much more to a stylish tea party than just tea, so here are my five top tips to making it effortlessly elegant.

Bernadotte Thermo jug at Georg Jensen

Floral Fancy Transform your table with fresh flowers in pretty vases. For those short on time, our Just Add Flowers service delivers gorgeous blooms, arranged in Silsal vases, straight to your door. Foodie Fantasy When it comes to the spread, a mixture of savoury and sweet is key. Classic sandwich options include egg, cream cheese and cucumber, and smoked salmon – just don’t forget to cut off the crusts. A tea party wouldn’t be the same without some fluffy scones, served with cream and jams.

NEW BABY AND PET – (NO) PROBLEM? A new arrival to the family is certainly exciting for all involved, but this brings concerns regarding the effects this will have on the current members of the family, including your pet. Dr. Adrienn Krasznai at Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic discusses ways to prepare the family

ADVERTORIAL

How do we best prepare our furry family members to keep things smooth and easy? First rule, start early! Expect changes, different daily routines, less time for the pet, new smells and probably a change in room arrangement. Decisions like ‘is the dog allowed in the baby room?' need to be taken from the start and followed through right away. Otherwise, the baby may get the blame for the sudden changes. Active interaction should be reduced in time, but intensified in quality, well before the baby comes. Set times for play, cuddles, grooming, walks and active interaction, and gradually reduce them to what you think you can keep up with after the babies’ arrival. Make sure that your pet still holds its' position in your heart and continues to receive attention after the babies arrival, so that they don't feel pushed aside. Both, the pet and the baby, should have safe areas. For cats, this will often mean the chance to escape or hide in high places, to sleep out of reach or watch from a safe distance. It also means restricting the baby from access to pet food and cat litter tray, i.e. with child gates or elevated feeding stations. For dogs, proper crate training is essential to give them a 'safe retreat' and the use of chewy toys or feeding via feeding toys can help them handle the stress of the new situation better. Dogs should also learn to go for their walks with the baby stroller, so that the daily walks can continue for both the child and the dogs’ benefit. Regular visits to daycare, or runs with a dog walker, can help very energetic dogs deal with the reduced attention they will receive at home. For the baby, consider carefully which areas are strictly 'baby only', and imply this rule from the start and well before the baby

60 | OCTOBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

arrives. The use of special sticky tapes ('sticky paws') or protective netting over the baby’s cot, can discourage cats from declaring the items their new favourite sleeping place. Early installation of screen doors or child gates allows you to keep the dog out of 'baby only' zones. Never leave pets and children together unattended. Even the best natured pets can react in a defensive way if an uncoordinated move from the baby startles or hurts them. If pets and babies are allowed to snuggle, supervise their sleeping habits. While the pets will mean no harm, snuggling up too close can hinder the baby’s ability to breathe. Always make sure the babies face and chest are free. Last but not least, observe general hygiene. Always wash and disinfect your hands after handling your pet, and especially when handling faeces. Deworm your pet frequently (up to every month with a newborn or toddler in the house) and apply products for tick and flea prevention. When the day comes, choose a neutral or common space (not the pets sleeping place) and give your pet time to calm down before you introduce the baby. Allow them to approach and sniff, leave the room with the baby if they get too excited or worried, while your partner remains with the pet to help them calm down again. Avoid sending the pet out, as this will create a negative connection with the baby. Encourage a friendly approach and calm behaviour with plenty of praise and cuddles, and always make sure that the presence of the baby has some positive effect for the pet (cuddles, attention, treats, toys), so they will enjoy the baby being in the same room. In case of adverse reactions, increase distance but avoid any form of punishment (like 'telling off'), as this can lead to the pet associating the baby with negative experiences and thus rejecting the baby.

PLAYTIME FOR KIDS AND PETS Your kids have gone back to school but that doesn't mean they can't continue to have quality time with their pets. Spending time with a family pet gives children a greater sense of empathy and teaches children responsibility. Here are a few ideas on how your kids can have fun with their fourlegged siblings

The Family Dog Games Teach them a new trick: There are so many recourses including your kids favourite Youtube videos which feature training animals. These tricks will not only help your dog learn a new trick, but it will help your child pick up a new skill, as well as patience. DIY backyard obstacle course: Cardboard boxes, play tunnels, a hula hoop and a pool noodle can all be repurposed into a backyard obstacle course that your child and dog can learn to master together. Sprinkler fun: Dogs and kids are both likely to be entertained running through the sprinkler. While some dogs couldn't care less about sprinklers, they will love chasing your kids around the yard as they run through the sprinklers. Reading practice: If your little one is learning to read, there’s no better audience than a patient, nonjudgmental, four-legged listener. Have a no-stress, daily storytelling time to practice reading skills.

Kitty and Kiddie Playtime Build a fort: Collect cardboard boxes to craft a creative cat fort: cut holes, tape them together and colour the cardboard. All of it adds to a great way to spend a weekend. Watch your cat learn to make their way through the maze, perhaps with the help of treats or toys. With large enough boxes, your child and your cat can enjoy a dark oasis to let their imaginations run wild. Just be sure to assist so that they are secure and do not collapse on your cat, so as to not scare him/her in the process. Teach them to fetch: Cats love to hunt all sorts of things, scrunched up pieces of paper and milk lids for example. Kids can teach cats to play fetch with items by simply sitting on the floor, tossing it and seeing what happens. Some cats might not get the concept, and may go play with the toy independently, but over time, repetition can help your cat understand the game. They will learn that as they bring the toy back to your child that it “comes to life" every time it’s thrown. Cat car: Securely tie a piece of string to a remote-controlled car and send it whizzing with your kitty for an irresistible target. Again, for your cat's safety make sure the car isn't too fast and that your child doesn’t drive the car into the cat.
