WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be

Carly Pike (@carlyandteds) Retail Manager at Level Shoes

JULY

Seeing those lines on the pregnancy test confirmed that we were indeed expecting another baby! My initial thoughts were filled with a combination of anxiety and overwhelming happiness. I was carrying another little human. I vividly remembered the symptoms; constant nausea, vomiting, dizziness and if these weren’t them, I was going mad. My first pregnancy had been unbelievably difficult, but babies are a miracle in themselves and I knew that I could do this again. Surely it couldn’t be as bad as the first time, right?! I had seen the wonderful glowing mothers out 14 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

and about, but for the second time I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Unfortunately, I had no glow and was only at the very beginning of my journey.

AUGUST

It was the first day of the sale and I could not move from the office, the vomiting was unbearable, and I knew I had a job to do but was overcome with guilt about not being able to support my team and my family. As a Retail Manager, I put so much pressure on myself to succeed, my career had always been so important to me. I told myself...

‘I could be a great mumma, multitask, prioritise and do many things I love’. Luckily, not only is the company behind Level Shoes family-owned, but people are at the heart of everything they do. Therefore, being surrounded by genuine, positive people and the support they give me is incredible. They sat with me, comforted me each time I was hospitalised and words of wisdom were sent my way. You soon realise that as an expat, the people you work with become your very own family.

SEPTEMBER

Zofran, the anti-sickness drug soon became my best friend and it was my hope of getting through each day. My husband and my little boy were by my side the whole time, rubbing my back and motivating me - my rocks in all of this. The hospital I visit here in Dubai is incredible and my Doctor is calm, informative but so caring and has always listened to me. Every few days I was put on IV drips, given new medication and I tried ‘new’ foods. I could only eat udon noddles and the thought of fruit/vegetables in any form was tough. I was extremely dehydrated, so I knew I had to try my best. I was surrounded by so many friendly faces, yet at times, I felt lonely and isolated and the struggle made me feel so ungrateful. I took myself off social media, barely looked at my phone - which was usually such an active part of my life - and focused on getting through each day. My little boy, the apple of my eye, was also trying to accept that I was so unwell, and we tried to make each day as ‘normal’ as possible for him. Luckily, I have a wonderful nanny who took over the day-to-day running of our home and cared for my little boy like her own. Some days felt like they would never end but at the core of it all, I knew, our baby would be the end result.

OCTOBER

At 14 weeks, I came back onto social media

and used the platform as a way of connecting with others going through the same. Many reached out for help and whenever I could, I was there to listen. We were all in this together after all. At 16 weeks, I entered the doctors' room expecting to be told I was carrying a little boy - that was my initial feeling - but this tiny wriggly baby was a girl. We were all thrilled that she was safe and sound. At 21 weeks, we were told that our baby is healthy and thriving even though I had struggled. Today, at 23 weeks I am feeling positive and can dabble in a variety of foods. I set myself daily tasks to keep a routine which helps to eliminate triggers. There is definitely a rainbow after every storm and this little girl will be mine. My heart is so full!

Some days felt like they would never end but at the core of it all, I knew, our baby would be the end result

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN NOVEMBER? Everything to look forward to in the city

N

ovember is my absolute favourite month of the year, as Dubai officially moves outdoors. Although the weather was just about bearable during October, humidity levels were still on the high side and the midday sun wasn’t exactly pleasant. With a cooler breeze comes more outdoor activities and as a family, we are looking forward to more days on the beach (public beaches and with Privilee) and outdoor cinemas. I hear there’s a great one over at JLT and West 14th on the Palm which have special family movie nights, both of which are free. We recently moved back to the marina and the timing couldn’t be better. We are looking forward to walks around the water, bridge parks, food trucks and pop up markets. One of our favourite things to do is get the water taxi for only Dhs5. The kids love it!

LAURA BUCKWELL Event MC

16 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

I’m also looking forward to eating al fresco. The Bread Street kitchen has a wonderful family brunch where they open up the doors for activities outside and we are also looking forward to trying out the Bab al Shams family brunch too, which looks really fun. Another activity on the list this month is the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary to see the flamingoes, a lovely nature-based activity which is absolutely free. You park up, walk down the pathway until you reach a small lookout point on the water and you get to learn all about the beautiful flamingoes. If you go around 4pm you might catch them at feeding time. Well that’s the hit list for this month. I’m not sure I’ll want November to end!

MUM'S MORNING WITH DUBAI LONDON CLINIC THE VILLA CENTRO BRANCH Three insightful presentations focused on key health concerns during our latest Dubai London Clinic event at The Villa Centro branch

D

ubai mums gathered at Dubai London Clinic, The Villa Centro branch recently, for an insightful closed-door discussion on all things oral health and gynaecology. During the interactive event, doctors from the clinic offered advice on the child vaccine regime, dental health for both children and adults, and the importance of regular breast screening. Speaking on the controversies that have recently made the headlines surrounding vaccinations, Dr. David Egbert – specialist paediatrician at DLC, spoke of his personal experiences in dealing with cases in both the UAE and Canada that have reaffirmed his belief in the effectiveness of various vaccinations. “If you’re considering the first flu vaccination for your baby, it can be given any time after reaching the age of six months,” he said. “The first vaccine requires two shots, one month apart – subsequently after this, the vaccination should be conducted annually.” Dr. Nuno Sarmento, general dentist, discussed tips to instil a healthy dental regime in both children and adults. He advised that to reduce the build up of bacterial plaque, teeth should be brushed after every meal using a fluoride toothpaste. If this is not possible, he suggested chewing a sugar-free gum or washing your mouth out with fluoride mouthwash after meals. Finally, Dr. Nada Altabara, a gynaecology 20 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

specialist with more than 20 years’ experience, spoke about the importance of breast screening throughout the year. She reaffirmed the need to build awareness and advised mums to “know what is normal for you” when conducting self-examinations, but to notify doctors of any abnormalities as soon as possible. She also stated that clinical breast exams, conducted by a doctor, should be carried out yearly from the age of 20, with mammograms recommended every two years after the age of 40. Two mums walked away with fabulous raffle prizes as the event drew to a close; Duaa Al Haddad was gifted a Dhs1,000 voucher to use on cosmetic dental treatment at Dubai London Clinic, and Emily Turnbull won a Mother, Baby & Child magazine subscription.

PROTECTING BABIES’ SKIN DURING COOLER CLIMES – BY WATERWIPES

We all know that the colder months can play havoc with our skin, making it dry, flaky and giving us painful chapped lips. However, did you know it can have the same effect on baby’s skin too?

24 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Cooler climes causes a baby’s skin to become dry and inflamed, often leading to rough, red cheeks and hands, which irritate and cause them a great deal of discomfort. And while babies’ mouths are often covered in dribble, they can get chapped lips because saliva breaks down the top layer of skin.

IS YOUR BABY TOO HOT OR TOO COLD? While human instinct is to make them all warm and cozy, this can actually make things worse. Over-dressing your baby can do more harm than good. Too much swaddling causes discomfort to the baby, making them feel hot and uncomfortable. Babies can overheat easily, which is not only irritating, but also makes skin dry and other skin conditions worse. To begin with, dressing babies in thin, breathable layers of cotton is much more suitable as compared to wool, polyester or nylons. This will allow more air to reach the skin and to make it easy, remove a layer of clothing ensuring they don’t feel too hot. Ensure your baby is wearing a hat and possibly gloves too, checking regularly that those areas aren’t overheated.

KEEP YOUR BABY'S SKIN CLEAN AND WELL-MOISTURIZED Keeping your baby well-moisturized and hydrated during the cooler months is key to avoiding skin conditions. Use a non-perfumed moisturizer on them regularly, however, bathe them less regularly, as too much water can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to dry out more. If all this sounds a little concerning – how can we keep them clean if too much washing is a no-no? This is where WaterWipes come in. Made from 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract, they are the world’s purest baby wipes and the number one choice for newborn skin.

So, grab your coat and venture out with confidence and determination, enjoying the cooler climes in a more relaxed manner and make the most of the coming months.

MANAGING YOUR CHILD’S DIABETES Dr Amani Osman, Consultant Paediatric Diabetologist, Imperial London College Diabetes Centre (ICDLC) discusses ways to avoid diabetes stigmatisation and tips to help children Managing type 1 or type 2 diabetes is not an easy task. Having diabetes as a child is even harder. As a caring parent, you should create a diabetes management plan to help your child stay active and grow as healthily as possible. Diabetes stigmatisation in society makes the treatment and monitoring process an underthe-counter deal. However, parental support can eliminate the negative outcomes of diabetes stigmatisation and encourage a positive state of mind. The first step is to find ways to cope with bullying and stigmatisation if it occurs. Diabetes groups and camps exist to provide enough emotional support, and this is especially important for young kids and pre-teens. It could seem superficial, but diabetes stigmatisation is a real problem for those who have diabetes of either type, and it can affect a child’s mental and emotional wellbeing. This, in turn, can lead to negative psychological outcomes, as well as poorer clinical results. Even though the person with type 1 diabetes is just a child, people suspect that the cause was overeating. There are cases when other people, assuming type 2 diabetes, ask the child if he or she should be eating so much, when in fact they are consuming a normal diet. In addition, the ability to give oneself insulin injections, even in the early years of elementary school, is just part of the regular course of treatment for diabetes specialists, but it is looked upon with astonishment, even today. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2019 | 27

H E A L T H

Don’t put labels on your child So, the second crucial thing a family can do is to attend doctor’s appointments together with the child to provide support and protection, so he or she won’t feel lonely or sad. It’s important to implement healthy food choices for the whole family, not just for one child. It is important to let your child feel included, so limit fast food and encourage the whole family to follow a healthy diet. The same goes for exercising, which is applicable to all parents, not just those parents of a child with diabetes. An active lifestyle will help keep illnesses at bay or help you manage those that you or your child already have. Again, it should be a family thing. The right perception of diabetes plays a crucial role. Parents have to explain that diabetes is not a “bad disease”, but rather a health condition that requires specific lifestyle and dietary changes, and constant monitoring. Therefore, don’t forget to encourage and reward your kids for diabetes monitoring. Also, don’t put labels on your child and don’t stigmatise type 2 diabetes as a “lifestyle disease”. While type 2 could be triggered by lifestyle factors such as poor nutrition and lack of exercise, managing type 2 diabetes requires changing diet and lifestyle in general. So, as a parent, you should focus on what to do, rather than why it happened. Lastly, returning to the topic of diabetes perception and stigmatisation, it is advisable to stop using words with negative connotations such as “illness”, “diabetic” or “disease”. Such terms are highlighted as potentially problematic because they can be perceived as judgmental and they do not take into account the various factors in children’s lives that can impact on their diabetes management. They also don’t take into account the realities of living with such a demanding, unpredictable, and relentless condition.

TEACHER’S PROFILE

MATT BLENFORD

Football coach at Elite Sports Academy How did you get into coaching? I have coached since secondary school, aged 16, completing my Football Coaching badges through the F.A Learning System. As a career, I became part of and ran a Coaching Franchise in the United Kingdom, working with schools in the Oxfordshire area around the time of the London 2012 Olympic Games and wanted to inspire young children through Physical Education and Sport.

What excites you about your role? In the world of coaching, every day is different. It is nice to wake up and thoroughly enjoy your job, and I love that I can have a positive impact on young children, inspiring them to play sports that they love and give them the opportunities in sport that I was fortunate to have when growing up.

Any challenges you face? Every child offers a different challenge on the coaching field. They are all different in their own unique ways, learning best the way they can, and when a group of children all come off with a smile having loved their time in the session, you know the challenges have been overcome and that you have made a positive impact.

Your greatest achievement over the course of your career? Having the opportunity to run, grow and

manage my own Sports Academy in the U.K. Myself and my team made a huge impact there, but after a few years, I felt the time was right to move to Dubai, and now I am continually working towards doing the same here.

How do you get students interested in what you teach? It’s simple, I am passionate and enthusiastic about what I do, so every time I deliver a coaching session, or run a holiday camp for children, I feel my energy imparts on the children and sets the tone of the session. Children feed off of this and certainly at the company I work for Elite Sports Academy, we know the children will absolutely love the content we deliver, which keeps them interested in the sports we deliver.

One thing you would like to change about the football academic system in the UAE? Personally, I would like to see increased legislation and governance for all ‘Academies’. This will help to increase the quality of coaching, development pathways for talented players and provide safer learning environments for all children across the U.A.E. If you would like to experience an Elite Sports Academy Football or Swimming session, please contact Matt at matt@elitesports.ae or visit elitesports.ae MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2019 | 31

ASK THE PRINCIPAL BILL DELBRUGGE

Director, Dunecrest American School

How did you begin your career in education? When I first started as an educator, it was because I loved music and I wanted to share this love of music with other people. My first job was as band director, teaching instrumental music. My goal was to make sure that the fine arts were well established at the schools I served, and to foster a love of music and performance within our students.

How long have you been at this school and where were you prior to this? I joined Dunecrest American School as its Founding Director, serving through the pre-operating year. We opened our doors in September 2018. I have been a part of the Esol Education organization for over 10 years, serving as the Director and Head of School at American International School in Egypt (AISE), one of the leading American schools in the Middle East and Africa in terms of student achievement. I have also served as Senior Educational Consultant for Esol Education and currently serving

as the President of the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS). Before coming to AIS Egypt, I was the Superintendent of Schools in Flagler County, Florida, where my team and I were

responsible for all facets of education for 26,000 students. The seven years I was in Flagler County the District grew from 6,800 students to 26,000. In addition to the PreK-12 program, the school district also operated

THE FINNISH EDUCATION SYSTEM Maryum Nawaz, Nursery Development Manager at Best Kidz Nursery – Best Education Group discusses the success of the Finnish Education system and why it’s one of the best worldwide 34 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

I began my career in Early Years education in 2011 and have never looked back. I was a Nursery Principle in Dubai for over eight years and then in 2018 I had an exciting opportunity to join BEST Education Group, in their project to head the first Finnish nursery in the UAE implementing Finland’s highquality early years curriculum. In Finland, children do not start school until the age of 7. They are given the freedom to enjoy their early childhood to grow up as children. In Finnish kindergartens, learning and teaching are connected to the children’s natural ways of acting. There is a lot of playing, physical activities, exploring and self-expression. Tests and formal scoring are not considered beneficial in the Finnish pedagogy, so there is no standardised testing. With no grades and busy-routines children are then able to focus on the true task at hand – learning and growing as a human being. The focus is on a positive attitude towards learning, as well as learning to gain skills that children will need in the future. Preschool children are rarely seated to complete regular reading exercises. Finnish teachers are free to teach if they determine a child is “willing and interested” to learn. They don’t push them, and children learn because they are ready for it. As per the Finnish system, children often have the same teacher for up to six years of their education and all teachers are required to have a master's degree before entering the profession, which highlights the importance of highly qualified educators who understand children, their needs and learning styles. THE ROLE WE PLAY As early years professionals, we have a vital role in how we communicate, observe, listen to, support, encourage and care for young children, as well as the kind of learning opportunities and environments we offer children in their early years. It is vital to provide high-quality Early Years education in promoting lifelong learning and building a solid base for learning and wellbeing to foster caring, capable and responsible future citizens. The reason we brought this type of high-quality early years education to the UAE, was due to the need for availability of this type of education, which combines best practices and also the need to shift parent’s expectations. Early years matters, as the most important stage of development in a child’s life is between the age of 0-3 years. The Finnish methodology is formed on phenomenonbased learning. It is focused on the well-being of the child and their needs are at foremost. The skills and knowledge learned in early years are strengthening – not only the child’s cognitive skills – but also the child’s participation and active involvement in the society. It is focused on Equality and Equity - implementing pedagogy which meets with the different needs and skills of children – offers an individualised learning program for all children. The approach focuses on preparing children for the future, the skills they will need, in order to build responsible future citizens. It is important to have children learn the essential and social skills of cooperation and collaboration at an early age. What the children of today will face in the future is a constant stream of change and an unpredictable future. So how do we prepare MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2019 | 35

them? They need to be adaptable, innovative, and creative. If they learn these basic 21st-century skills, they can easily learn math, languages, science, and much more in the future. BEST PRACTICES Our curriculum follows Finland’s National core curriculum for Early childhood Education and Care (2016). Learning happens when children play and explore together in a positive way with meaningful interactions. We ensure that learning and teaching are connected to the children’s natural ways of acting so there is a lot of playing, physical activities, exploring and selfexpression through child-led and child-initiated activities. We have a holistic approach to education and care and the aim is to promote wellbeing as well as learning. Good care and education, planned for child’s interests and needs, creates best learning opportunities for a child. Emphasis is given on the interaction and building up of close relationships with each child, which helps to facilitate learning. Learning situations, solutions and environments change according to the day, activity and according to the child and we ensure rich learning environments to promote learning. We ensure good quality of interaction in a peer group, individual play, small group and large group which facilitates equality. Positive emotions and learning experiences in a peer group supports to learn more. Educators document the children’s play, as this observation gives a lot of information about children’s world, their thoughts, interests, emotions and experiences. We learn by observing children, to provide the earliest possible support when needed, so we focus more on adult self-assessment rather than child assessment. In the short and long term, play benefits cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. When play is fun and child-directed, children are motivated to engage in opportunities to learn. Since the ‘child’ is the focus, his or her need for support can be recognised and appropriate support arranged. Specific learning difficulties can be detected at an early age through careful observation of their behavioural and developmental pattern. The development of transversal competence starts in early childhood and promotes children’s growth as individuals as well as members of community. Transversal competence consists of knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, will and an ability to apply future skills. According to researchers, these learning outcomes are the skills people need in the future. For example, good interaction with people with diverse cultural backgrounds and worldviews requires familiarity with and respect for one’s own cultural background as well as those of others. Active and responsible participation and involvement form a foundation for a sustainable and good future and children are guided towards friendliness and good manners. Learning is based on the child’s strengths, interests – to get meaningful experiences. It supports children to learn and start to understand themselves as learners. The focus is on teaching skills and not just knowledge in order to prepare them for the skills they will need in the future.

JOURNEY TO

Motherhood AND BEYOND

One of the most renowned food bloggers in the UAE, Karen McLean, sheds light on her journey, what it’s like being a mum to fraternal twins and nifty tips for new mums MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2019 | 39

I S S U E

I’ve known of Karen McLean ever since she began her blog, Secret Squirrel Food (@secretsquirrelfood). Her gorgeous chia bowl creations and flower-shaped avocado toast turned me into a loyal follower for years, while inspiring me to create the same for my work-desk breakfast. The creative mind, photographer and chef behind the blog, relocated to Dubai over six years ago, for her husband’s work – he runs a consulting firm called Compass Project Consulting – and has since focused on fulfilling her passion of making healthy food anything but boring. “Secret Squirrel Food is a collection of my recipes that celebrates the pleasures of eating simple, natural and wholesome food. I love to experiment in the kitchen and create quick, easy and delicious recipes,” says the mum of fraternal twins. But before Karen switched roles, she was a fully-qualified chartered accountant. “I worked in a Commercial and Business Operations team for a major Japanese Pharmaceuticals company looking after Middle East, Turkey and Africa. Prior to that, I was in Supply Chain & Logistics and also spent many years as an external auditor. I decided to leave the corporate world four years ago to pursue my love for cooking and healthy eating,” she says. Karen admits, although it can be challenging and terrifying at times, it is also exciting, surreal and, in many ways, indescribable. “It takes a lot of courage to take the leap out of what you’ve always known and into a life of passion as a freelancer.” Her love for food developed at a very young age. Karen’s grandfather inspired her passion for food - he owned four restaurants in Vietnam and she spent her childhood cooking in the kitchen with him. “My parents are amazing cooks, and my sister and I also share the same passion for food. What I love about food is that it brings people together. I started Secret Squirrel when I moved to Dubai and one day, I started putting my photos and recipes on Instagram and Secret Squirrel Food was born.” As my photographer Charls jumps around to make the babies giggle for our photoshoot, Karen mentions her first baby is her three-year old miniature dachshund, Teddy. Her fraternal twin girls, Emily and Sophie - who are now five months old – have completed the family. But it’s been a long journey for Karen, and she admits, this has been the longest and shortest five months of her life. “Pregnancy doesn’t come easily for a lot of people. I had such a difficult pregnancy journey and it took me over four long years to finally meet my two little rainbow twins. I’ve had two miscarriages in the past and it was absolutely heartbreaking,” says Karen. Miscarriage is so common, but it’s a subject which is still taboo and not often talked about. “I felt so alone and helpless at the time and wasn’t aware that one in four pregnancies end in a loss. I hope no-one ever goes through the struggles I went through, but if you do, just know that you are not alone." As our conversation moves along, we touch upon the changes in a mum’s day-to-day life. Karen admits, it’ very hard managing work, babies and life in general. “I have to be super organised to be able to get everything done and often plan my days, a week in advance so that I have some sort of idea of what’s ahead of me.” Karen also believes in taking each day as it comes and having no expectations at all. Try not to think about things too much. When she had the twins, she would wake up each day and say to herself that she just needed to get through the day, and then when evening came around, she told 40 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

herself she needed to just get through the night. The morning arrives and it was the same routine all over again. “I survived the last five months – phew!” She’s usually up first thing in the morning around 6am, as soon as the girls are up and often wonders if she will ever sleep in again. After feeding the girls and putting them on their playmat or bouncy chair, she makes porridge, avocado toast or a smoothie and a nice cup of tea to start the day. “I try to juggle work, content creation, emails and calls throughout the day. Work is different everyday depending on the projects and campaigns I’m working on. I have a nanny, Liyana who looks after the girls, whilst I work. She’s amazing and very much part of our family!” To connect with the girls and Teddy, Karen often goes for a walk to the park at 5pm. Bath time is always at 5.45pm, followed by dinner feed and then an early bedtime at 6.30pm, so that she can cook dinner and catch up on emails in the evenings. “I try to spend as much time with the both of them as I can. I know saying that time flies by is clichéd, but time is really flying, and they are growing up so quickly. I don’t like to separate them; they are always together when I’m spending time with them.” One thing she has learnt over the past few months is to not listen to others and follow her instincts. “Mama knows best!! If you receive advice from 20 different mums, you will get 20 different responses. It can get very overwhelming, so just go with your gut as only you will know what’s best for your baby.” As for smart tips, this new mum admits she has plenty. First of all, she suggests heaps of tummy time. It’s really good for babies and strengthens them (read the benefits of this on page 44). “Try to sleep when the baby sleeps (although this is easier said

Pregnancy doesn’t come easily for a lot of people. I had such a difficult pregnancy journey and it took me over four long years to finally meet my two little rainbow twins than done!); always ask for help - I’ve learnt that I can’t do everything myself – and lastly, don’t spend a lot on expensive toys. Just re-use any plastic water bottles you have and fill it with rice, pasta, beans etc. and you have an instant musical toy. Genius!" Going forward, Karen says she will continue living her life by one of her favourite mottos, “Live simply. Dream big. Be grateful. Give love. Laugh lots.” MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2019 | 41

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT OF INFLUENZA Flu season is back again with a new batch of viruses. To shorten its course and prevent complications, Dr Javed Hingora from Dubai Homeopathy Health Centre recommends the best homeopathic remedies for your baby 42 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Influenza is a viral infection that affects the respiratory tract causing symptoms in the nose, throat and lungs. Homeopathic treatment is aimed at stimulating the immune system to combat the virus and relieve the discomfort arising out of this infection. It is especially useful for children where use of chemical medications has limitations due to its potential side effects. A homeopathic ‘remedy’ is selected based on a cluster of symptoms that include the state of mind, energy level, location, and additional symptoms that distinguishes one influenza case from another. During flu season, one usually finds these characteristic symptoms affecting many individuals similarly in a family or a community and that same remedy can be used when it matches the symptoms. Although there are

1

more than 60 homeopathic remedies that can be of help in influenza, here is a list of the top five that can be used by children and adults alike with the characteristic symptoms. Note, for babies younger than six months, the dosage is two pills dissolved in three tablespoons water. Give them only a teaspoon from it every three hours, total four times a day for two days. These treatments can also be taken by older children and adults. The recommended dosage is two pills dissolved in a teaspoon of water to be taken orally every three hours, four times a day, for two days. Dosage for adults and children are the same, since homeopathic remedies are energy stimulation to the body and do not contain chemical substances in them.

TUMMY TIME Dr Deepti Chaturvedi, Specialist Pediatrics at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi, highly recommends this activity for motor skills development

44 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

• Alternate the baby’s head position to prevent him/her from developing a preferred position, as the baby might not be able to lift his/her head yet.

• Make tummy time part of your daily routine. You can start for a minute every time you change their diapers.

H

ave you noticed your baby has been spending more time on their tummy? Tummy time is the time that your baby spends on their stomach. This should ideally take place when the baby is awake and alert. To encourage them to do so, if your baby doesn't automatically turn, place him/her on the tummy on a solid surface such as the floor. Place a toy in front of them and engage in play. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should play with their baby two to three times each day, while they are on their stomach, beginning on the first day home from the hospital itself. Start with three to five minutes and gradually increase that time period and the frequency of tummy time, until the baby has about one hour each day over the next few months. To encourage tummy time, try some of these activities: • Place a toy just out of reach during playtime, to get the baby to reach for it. You can also place toys in a circle around

the baby, so that they reach for the toys. This will help in developing muscles for scooting on their belly, crawling and rolling over.

• Lie down and place the baby on your chest, keeping your hands on the baby so that they don’t roll off.

Doing this regularly will help strengthen the muscles in their neck and help prevent your baby from developing a flat spot on the back of his head. Prolonged time spent lying on his back can cause the back of the head to flatten. While this condition doesn’t cause any developmental problems, a misshapen head can look odd. So be sure your baby gets some tummy time each day. It also helps them strengthen their head, neck and shoulder muscles and boost motor skills. Furthermore, lack of tummy time can sometimes cause a delay in the development of motor skills, such as rolling over and crawling, Although tummy time is significant for early muscle development, it is crucial that babies sleep on their backs and not their stomachs to prevent Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

TEXTURE PLAY "The sense of touch is the first way one communicates and interacts with babies," says Monica Valrani, CEO of Ladybird Nursery

46 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

At Ladybird, our baby classroom is equipped to highlight the tactile sense for the little ones, and they engage in various sensorial activities to enhance their sense of touch. Here are some of the activities your babies can explore at home:

Sensory Wall Panel

Water Play

Create a board or wall with various textures such as felt, shiny fabrics, mirrors, moving parts, bright colours. This encourages discovery and interaction, develops eyehand coordination, and improves motor skills and movement, as they manipulate the objects.

Fill a large plastic tub with shallow water and various toys such as funnels, cups, balls, sponges, colanders. Colour can also be added to the water for variation. Babies are drawn to water as they are familiar with it in the womb and it also has a calming effect. This activity develops their fine and gross motor skills, as well as creates an awareness of shape, form and texture.

Muddy Messy Play Simply mix baby porridge with cocoa to create this fun activity and allow them to get messy. This activity fosters curiousity, imagination and exploration as they feel the texture, smell and taste. It is a social activity shared with friends and develops good concentration and focus as they engage in exploration. Handson play also promotes physical development such as muscle control, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

Playdough Babies love to play with playdough and feel the texture between their hands. Playdough enhances fine motor skills and develops and strengthens hand muscles. It provides unlimited possibilities for creativity and exploration. It also improves their pincer grip in preparation for writing, as they use their finger and thumb to manipulate the playdough.

Bubbles A simple activity as blowing bubbles is fun and develops eye-hand coordination as babies reach out to pop bubbles. It also motivates movement, especially as they are about to walk. It develops concentration as they focus on the bubbles and their movement. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | NOVEMBER 2019 | 47

TRIED & TESTED Enjoy me-time at the spa

Queens Beauty Lounge, Dubai Marina

Navigating the hustle and bustle of the Dubai city life might mean we don’t get enough time to de-stress and pamper ourselves. So, if you have limited time but in need of a bit of relaxation and royal treatment, we’d recommend stopping by Queen’s Beauty Lounge, located at Trident-Marina Scape, Dubai Marina. Queens Beauty Lounge offers a variety of hair, nail and body treatments using natural and organic products that nurture well-being from the inside and out. The salon’s bright interior with mirrored walls gives it a modern and sophisticated vibe. It also has slick but comfy leather chairs that are fit for a queen. Upon arrival, I was greeted with smiles and offered a cold towel and a refreshing lemon and mint-infused water. After filling out the skin consultation form, noting any allergies or lack thereof, I made my way to the spa room for my first treatment. I opted for the Express Facial with Shirley Conlon Organics (SCO), a line of organic, ethical and sustainable

skincare line made exclusively in Dubai. With gentle music filling the room I soon made myself comfortable on the plush massage bed as my aesthetician, Dalia, began the treatment. She began by washing my face using SCO’s Olive & Castor Bean Cleansing Milk before applying a facial scrub to exfoliate any dead skin cells. After rinsing and drying my face, Dalia assessed my skin type and recommended we use rosehip oil to rehydrate and reduce pigmentation on my combination skin. She then applied the oil generously, before beginning to gently massage my face, head, neck and arms. Next, she applied a detox face mask before capping the facial with a Fountain of Youth face cream. Following my facial, Dalia then proceeds with my Quick Fix organic massage. As someone who spends most of her work day sat in front of the computer, my back usually carries a lot of tension, so I opted for the full back massage

52 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

(you can choose between full back, head neck and shoulder and feet massage). She uses an SCO detox body oil and begins applying medium to firm pressure to my upper back muscles pushing out the knots with brisk yet relaxing strokes before working her way to my shoulder blades and down to the rest of my back. Since I opted for the express treatments (both lasting 30 minutes each), I didn’t expect it to be too effective but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Following the facial, my skin felt soft and smooth and I felt relaxed and rejuvenated after the massage. I will definitely recommend these services to women who are always on-the-go but want to indulge themselves. The SCO Express Facial is priced at Dhs150, and the Quick Fix Massages range from Dhs50 to Dhs100. For bookings, contact +9714 427 9689 or WhatsApp +97152 773 4508 or +97155 107 8605

REVIEW

modern gym may be adequate for most in ensuring you stay fit on your holiday, but there were two group classes that caught my eye which I was keen to try; PRAMA and Aqua-Spin.

DINING Spoilt for choice with dining venues to try, we opt for lunch at Blowfish. Its laid-back grab-and-go vibe is perfect for a quick bite in between sunbathing sessions – made all-the-more convenient by its pool-level location on the lower-ground floor. The menu is packed with tempting (and sinful) treats, but we each opt for a Blowfish burger with a side of loaded fries and onion rings to share. Juicy patties topped with gooey cheese and a hearty helping of spicy mayo – what’s not to love? Don’t miss the delicious chocolate milkshakes, too. For dinner, we head to Little Miss India. The restaurant’s exterior is as impressive as its interiors, with a tribal art taxi acting as the outdoor centrepiece on the terrace – one of the heavily painted trucks that is frequently spotted in south Asia. We make our way inside through antique wooden doors to our table in the dining area, which is decorated with vibrant artwork and polished brass walls. Here, we also have a full view of the open kitchen. We’re recommended a number of dishes to try and begin with the Bhatta da Smoked Lamb Chops to share. They arrive at our table in a smoking jar, which (though impressive to witness) also retains the flavour and ensures that the chops stay tender. For mains, we try the home-style chicken curry and the Goan shrimp curry. The shrimp curry has a slightly lighter gravy than the chicken curry, but both are rich in flavour and utterly delicious. The next morning, we head to breakfast in the Gold Lounge. Here, we enjoy eggs made to order, French toast, pancakes, and an impressive spread of cold cuts, cheese and cereals.

GET ACTIVE In line with Dubai Fitness Challenge this month, it felt only right to check out Fairmont The Palm’s fantastic fitness offerings. The hotel’s large

PRAMA is a high-intensity circuits workout held in a dark studio, with disco LEDs and an upbeat playlist. The entire session is controlled by software that enables sensors to react to your movements, altering the tempo of the class to suit your fitness needs. During the 45-minute class, we complete three rounds of eight stations, working intensely for 30 seconds on each exercise. It’s an ideal option for those looking for an all-round strength and cardio conditioning session, made all-the-more fun by the addition of colourful sensor technology. On Saturday morning, I head to Aqua-Spin. Using stationary bikes specially made to be submerged in water, participants pedal using the waters resistance in order to exercise. Our instructor, Hannah, divides the class into three distinct sections: spinning, circuits and Tabata, each involving short-burst cardio intervals for a maximum-intensity training experience. As a regular spin-goer myself, I didn’t feel that the class was overly exerting, and came away thinking it was a bit of fun. But I soon eat my words and discover that the class clearly works, as I am genuinely surprised to wake up the next day with some seriously sore muscles! PRAMA and Aqua-Spin are charged at Dhs55 per class for hotel staying guests.

KIDS’ CLUB If you’re travelling with younger guests, they’re sure to enjoy the exciting programme of edutainment activities at the Fairmont Falcons Kids' Club. Open to children of all ages from 18 months up to 16, there’s something to keep everyone entertained, with activities including a splash park, climbing wall, arts and crafts sessions and dressing up.

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR DOG’S TEETH HEALTHY Believe it or not, taking care of your dog's teeth is as important as looking after your own 66 | NOVEMBER 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

PETS

Just like us, our dogs experience plaque build-up if left on their teeth. This turns into tartar, accumulates around the gum line, irritates the gums and eventually leads to inflamed gums (known as gingivitis), which is the onset of gum disease. You may not know it, but this can become the root of serious issues as your dog ages. Causing teeth to fall out and leading to bacterial infection in vital organs, if it happens to get into their blood stream. Taking care of your dog's teeth will not only keep your pet healthy, but also help you avoid expensive dental bills. Here our four tips will help you ensure your dog keeps their pearly whites, healthy.

Tell-tale signs Your vet will be able to spot any problems during your dog's annual check-up, but in between that time, here are some signs you should look out for. Yellow and brown tartar deposits on the gum line, difficulty eating, swollen and bleeding gums and bad breath. Remember, dogs can have bad breath for a variety of health reasons so don't dismiss a foul smell as doggy breath.

Start brushing your dog’s teeth In much of the same ways you take care of your own; regular brushing, a good diet and the occasional check-up, help to keep your dog’s teeth healthy. Try to use toothpaste specifically designed for pets. They are safer than the ones we use, as these can cause distress due to the foaming and an upset stomach.

eventually get used to it. You should brush your dog's teeth at least once a week but once a day is best. Always start with plenty of reassurance to calm them down. Let them have a tiny taste of the toothpaste, then begin to gently brush their teeth in a massage-like motion. This allows them to get used to the sensation. Brush in a circular motion, paying particular attention to where the tooth meets the gum. When you're almost finished, brush vertically towards the inside of the mouth to clear any plaque you've dislodged. They might not like it at first, but be patient, you'll get there in the end.

Food for oral care There are specially formulated dog foods that can reduce tartar and avoid the onset of gum disease. This is the simplest way of making sure your dog gets some form of 'brushing' each day. For example, the VetEssentials dry pet food range from Hill’s includes unique kibble technology that provides clinically proven cleaning action. Another option, which your veterinarian

might recommend, includes the Hill’s Prescription Diet t/d which is formulated to slow down and even prevent plaque and tartar. Remember, keeping your dog's teeth in good condition is essential for their health. Hill’s Prescription Diet t/d and Vet Essential range is exclusively available to veterinary clinics only. Consult your vet to find out what will be the best for your pet.

Teeth-cleaning technology in a delicious multi-benefit food from Hill'sTM VetEssentialsTM Hill's unique dental kibble technology applies a clinically proven action that cleans teeth to the gumline, helps to prevent tartar build-up, and therefore keeps breath fresh.

What about the toothbrush? Depending on the size of your dog's teeth and mouth, you may be able to use a regular toothbrush. Again, there are specially designed brushes that fit on your finger to make brushing easier too. However, you can always ask your vet for their advice.

A regular cleaning routine Although brushing is easier if you begin while they are still young, a dog of any age will
