FAST ON THE MOVE WITH RIDE ON 1-2-3

SPONSORED CONTENT

Three products in one. Ride On 1-2-3 is a true all-rounder. It provides countless options to keep your little one busy, first as a mobile play center, then as a walker and later as a ride-on. Fun is pre-programmed with Ride On 1-2-3. It supports your child as they take their first steps and promises pure entertainment. At the same time, it supports development of motor skills. Learning to walk made easy. With Ride On 1-2-3, your child can get going at just 6 months and start his or her first ‘walking or driving lessons’. The ‘cockpit’ looks almost exactly like the inside of mom or dad’s car. There is a steering wheel, two mirrors, large green indicators and, of course, a horn. Your child can start driving by him or herself and practicing straightaway. The colorful buttons on the play element encourage children to try them out. Pressing activates the ‘radio’ that plays different children’s songs. Children grow up. Once he or she has mastered walking, your child can try out the walker. Ride On 1-2-3 converts easily, by removing the seat element. This reveals two handles for your little one to firmly hold. 2x height-adjustment means that Ride On 1-2-3 adapts easily to your child’s height. At long last. This is the moment we have all been waiting for. It’s finally time for your little treasure to try out the rideon. Now it’s just a matter of climbing on, driving off and having fun.

I

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY?

don’t know about you but January for us has been a whirlwind and literally shot passed. I find it usually drags on but not this year, probably because of all the activities and I’m sure February wont be much different. There are 29 days in February this year and there’s something on every week. The first that’s caught my eye is the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature where kids can meet and greet their favourite authors, listen to stories, attend workshops and shows, and for the older kids, enter writing and poetry competitions. I’m trying to encourage my 6 year old to read more so this will open his eyes a bit if he with lots of other kids who are properly into it too. That’s over at the Intercon Festival City from the 4th to the 9th.

Everything to look forward to in the city

LAURA BUCKWELL Event MC

We are also looking forward to our day trip to Laguna Water Park one weekend, as they have just started an all you can eat, all day bbq - what’s better than a water park and all day food overlooking La Mer, hey? Looking forward to a sunset beach walk after too as we haven’t been that end of town for a while. Another interesting event I stumbled across is over at the DWTC this month - ‘Fun with Finance’ for Parents and Kids! What an amazing idea. If my kids were the right age I would definitely go to this, as I think instilling a financial education at a young age is essential. Anyone with kids age 10+ can go and parents are welcome, where kids can learn about how to manage personal finance. That’s running on 15th Feb at DWTC. Another notable date for the diary is the Dubai School and Childcare Show from 6-8th also at DWTC which means it will be big and worth it if you are on the hunt for a good school. I recently went to The Boardwalk over at the Park Hyatt, right on the water, which is absolutely stunning and the food was out of this world. While there I was reminded of how much I wanted to try out the BBQ Donuts a few years ago and I’m determined to give them a whirl. They are basically floating orange donuts with a DIY bbq in the middle which you can take out to sea. Random but brilliant! I’m also hoping to get back into some sort of fitness (still hasn’t happened yet) and Privlee have partnered some amazing gyms and as a member you can join most of The Tribe’s fitness classes. I’m going to see if I can get into it again. Wish me luck!

PLAY WITH HAPE TOYS FROM BIRTH Keep your baby entertained on Hape infant soft mat no matter where you go. Hape portable baby gym features a hanging apple, a bee with fluttering wings, and a flower that will delight little hands and eyes – and it doubles as a stylish tote bag! Hanging cheerfully over baby’s crib, Hape Infant play arch will keep your little one amused and happy. Colorful dangling play pieces stimulate baby’s vision, hearing and sense of touch, helping to develop their brain and motor skills. Add more fun with Hape cute motifs. Keep baby’s pacifier clean and always within reach with colorful and functional Ladybug Pacifier Clip. Thoughtfully developed infant toys that stimulate babies’ senses, encourage self discovery, and reward movement. @hape_mena

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be

Rujoom Qamar Founder of @rujoomsreverie_

JULY We had just gotten over a super busy month of Ramadan and I had travelling plans lined up, starting from London. I noticed my mood was so low, feeling lethargic and just irritated at the littlest of things. I discussed this with my friend when she randomly suggested I take a pregnancy test to which I replied saying it can’t be! That was the last thing that was on my mind because I had not even missed my period date yet. I got my visa, we booked our tickets, and then my friends words rang again in my head and I thought, ‘What if ?’. I decided to do a test and there it was, the two lines! Totally unexpected to say the least, but it made me, my husband and family happy. My first born is almost five-years old and it was

not like my family and close friends around me had not questioned the second baby (gazillion times) To confirm this, I scheduled myself immediately for a blood test, the same day, to know for certain before I travelled. On knowing that I hadn’t even missed my period yet, the doctor disregarded my positive home test and suggested I wait for the blood test report. I won’t lie, while I waited, I started to get convinced that it could indeed be a false positive. But I got a call from the hospital same evening confirming and congratulating me for the news.

AUGUST

Funny story, even with my first pregnancy I

16 | FEBRUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

was due to travel when I found out. So, this time as well, I carried on with my travel plans, as planned. Our summer was spent in London, Istanbul, Lahore, Karachi and finally back home. During these weeks, I was going through the usual morning nausea, the tiredness and fatigue, migraines and extreme mood swings.

SEPTEMBER 12 weeks had passed and I was ready to tell people after the first in-depth scan. Since I'm a blogger I knew I couldn't hide the news for long. As and when I would break the news to someone, first thing I'd hear was “How were you travelling around so much in that

condition?" Well ladies, if there’s no risk associated with your pregnancy, it is totally safe to travel in your first trimester. Except, you have to be prepared to fight a lot of sickness and stay a little careful of the physical activities you do.

OCTOBER I was finally starting to feel a lot better emotionally, felt a positive sudden change in my mood and energy levels. I bounced back on my social media blogging and opened up about my pregnancy. Yes, I was starting to put on weight monthly. I am one of those who gains a lot during the pregnancy. Scheduled soon for my anamoly scan, which is ideally done between 18 to 20 weeks for a much deeper look and to detect any abnormalities (God forbid!). I was excited to know the gender of the baby. Husband and myself had been hoping for a girl this time, while my older child prayed every night for a baby brother. I was soon to find that out - but only reveal it to my close family and friends.

NOVEMBER In my anomaly scan, we discussed the Ectopic fetal heartbeat and the fact that I am in early gestation and my due date was now expected to be 10 days earlier than what had been calculated before. Cool! That just crossed another 10 days off my countdown. But even though the doctor assured me the ectopic heartbeat was insignificant, it still got me a teeny bit worried. My doctor referred me for another radiology scan with fetal heart specialist, but I had to get this approved by insurance and had to wait till the third trimester begins. As per policy, one radiology scan per term.

DECEMBER I had my scheduled radiology scan to confirm the fetal heartbeat. Nothing to worry about!

I was around seven months - already 12 to 14 kgs up. However, this time around I decided to not shy away from the bump or my growing weight. I told myself I will continue to dress up and try my best to look good. I invested in dresses that gave room to growing belly, and other maternity clothes - ordered online from various different stores like Namshi, Voga closet, Asos maternity. Winter break started, and we had no travelling plans for the first time in a long time. So, we planned activities to keep busy in the city.

JANUARY Started off this month with a family picnic watching the spectacular fireworks by the Abu Dhabi corniche. Since I am in my last trimester, another 50ish days to go, I am growing by

the day - now around 25 kgs up. With this increase in size it is becoming increasingly uncomfortable. I feel sciatic pain at times and unbearable heart burn. No matter what I eat, or don’t eat, day or night, I had been experiencing severe heartburn. I got prescribed pills that were a life savior. My baby shower is happening this month, which is being planned by my amazing friends. My child is now eagerly counting down days and asking me every day when he can meet his baby sibling. My mum has started shopping for newborn onesies and immediate use items that I don’t already have. We are all getting super excited. I must say I am nervous as well - worrying if my second is also going to be a surgery, and if so, how will I manage the recovery, the newborn, and school runs. But I guess I should just let it all be. I just need to stay strong and positive.

FINE HYGIENIC HOLDING AWARDED “STERILIZED BRAND OF THE DECADE 2020” Fine Hygienic Holding (FHH), one of the world’s leading Wellness Groups and manufacturer of hygienic paper products, has been awarded the prestigious and highly coveted “Sterilized Brand of the Decade Award” in 2020, by the Family Hygiene Institute (FHI). The patented technology utilizes ultraviolet light in the form of vertical waves to destroy bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms, producing a 99% sanitized product. This precision and consistency is what has made Fine such a trusted brand throughout all its markets, and vindicates the FHI’s decision to present them with this award.

The prestigious Sterilized Brand of the Decade Award was presented to Fine Hygienic Holding in recognition of their unique, sterilization technology through which they manufacture the only sterilized tissue in the world. Fine’s patented SteriPro technology ensures a fully

“Health and wellness are woven into the fabric of who we are at Fine; we believe that if you don’t have your health you don’t have anything. For the last decade we have employed our sterilization process, producing a sterilized tissue that provides customers with a reliable first line of defense against germs, bacteria and viruses, which is more important than ever as the world struggles with the Coronavirus outbreak.” The MWA’s strategy is based on collaborating and partnering with quality providers and organizations in order to provide dozens of expertise services in professional leadership and education for medical and wellness industries. This helps in enhancing and developing the standards, guidelines and credentialing programs to aid the general public and developing improved wellness. The FHI is a fully-integrated part of the MWA, which was founded over two decades ago by Dr. Christopher Breuleux, a global pioneer and visionary in the broad field of wellness. The FHI was created for the specific need of bringing special attention to hygiene and sterilization as an integral part of overall wellness. As Dr. Breuleux explains, “The word ‘wellness’ is so broad, and often connoted to the nutrition and fitness elements, when it means much more. Hygiene is a critical part of wellness, avoiding infection and spread of disease. So to help rectify this challenge, we created FHI as a means to bring more dedicated attention to hygiene best practices.” He added that it was nothing short of astounding that so few tissue companies take the effort to sterilize their products. The intuitive conclusion being that nearly all tissues could potentially represent a hazard to family health, which is why it is so remarkable that Fine, a regional company, has been doing such sterilization for the past decade; this factor made the group the easy choice for the award.

a fully sterile product, but also provides the benefit of killing germs, bacteria and viruses, including the Coronavirus, effectively limiting the spread of sickness throughout the region. Noting that the three key entry points for germs into the human body is eyes, nose, and mouth and that tissue products touch intimately all three. Fine Hygienic Holding CEO, James Michael Lafferty, commented on the award, “It’s an incredible honor for FHH to be selected from among the leading hygienic products across the globe. Fine has always been a visionary group, from the beginning we have sought to continuously stay ahead of the curve through innovation, improvement and the desire to create superior products that provide not only good value to consumers, but also improve their lives.

Dr. Nabil Fawzy, advisor and representative of FHI with over 40 years of experience in the field of Pediatrics said of the selection process, “The FHI takes into account the leading Hygiene brands regionally as well as globally, and subjects their products and processes to intense analysis according to top-level criterion set down by experts in the field. We’re looking for brands who excel in attention to detail and commitment to delivering the highest possible hygienic standards, thereby providing consumers with products that actively enhance their quality of life.” FHI wellness experts took into account the leading Hygiene products from around the world and analysed each according to global hygienic standards. Recipients of the awards receive a certified seal for packaging, which helps customers identify every day products that are of the highest hygienic standards. FHH has built a renowned reputation for providing consumers with trusted hygienic products made with the highest possible standards. The highly coveted award serves as a testament to Fine’s dedication to delivering only the finest quality hygienic products, and to the meticulous attention to detail that characterizes its manufacturing process. THE PURE JOY OF MOTHERHOOD Zeynab El-Helw, Founder of the Fashion Pirate blog and mum to little Luca, discusses her journey and why she’s choosing only the purest for her baby

T

urkish-Egyptian born Zeynab El-Helw has captured the hearts of 1 million followers through her Instagram page, Fashion Pirate (@fashion_pirate). The effortlesslychic mum – who was raised in London - launched her Instagram page in 2015 and has since used it to engage with followers. Not just those who share her ardent love for fashion and beauty, but also mums from around the globe. “The platform eventually led to the development of my e-commerce platform and further involvement in fashion events and pop ups. That is when I decided to bid farewell to my full-time job and pursue my passion,” says Zeynab, a Central Saint Martins graduate who specialised in costume and theatre design, went on to do a Masters in Marketing and another Masters in International Business Management. Zeynab moved to the UAE ten years ago, to complete an internship at Citibank, however she soon found herself applying for an opening in Dior. “I was a huge fan of the brand and its creative director at the time was John Galliano, who had graduated from my alma mater. Following my first interview, I flew back home to London and I received a call for a second interview on the same day. I decided to take a chance and flew back to Dubai, attended another interview and held my breath for two weeks. I started my job at Dior in June 2010.”

MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | FEBRUARY 2020 | 21

P A R E N T I N G

Fast forward to ten years later, and Zeynab has accomplished plenty, with an e-commerce brand, successful blog, and newborn baby keeping her busy on the daily. “I need to plan everything in advance and I can’t step out of my schedule very easily. I’m a very active person so planning ahead is key.” Zeynab tells me, managing work and life comes with its own set of challenges, but it is her first priority to spend as much time as possible with Luca. “I don’t feel tied down as I enjoy spending every minute with him and I know that these days can’t be brought back, so I really want to enjoy every minute. Of course, there are days where it’s exhausting and there is little sleep, but I always try to ensure that I reboot. My family really helps me with that.” As we chat about her pregnancy, Zeynab mentions she was lucky to have a smooth pregnancy. “I travelled until the eighth month and I was very actively involved in my work. I spent the summer in London -

where my family is based - and maintained a very active pregnancy, keeping up with Pilates, a lot of walking and swimming. In the end, I went into labour and delivered naturally at 39 weeks.” Since every aspect of Zeynab’s life is in the limelight, it’s easy to wonder if she faces a lot of pressure, being an influencer and a mum. “We always face pressure, no matter who we are and what we do. I feel it is important to prioritise yourself and take breaks when needed, as we learn to face challenges and manage everything on our own. I built a thick skin on social media and found a way to balance it being part of my work and not taking it too seriously at the same time,” she says. Behind the scenes, Zeynab can often be found reading up on the best products for little Luca and asking plenty of questions before making a decision. “I learned that choosing the right, healthy products for the baby from day one is key and can be a gamechanger.” It can be tricky with all

the choices available nowadays though, so recommendations, Zeynab mentions, definitely come in handy. For example, more and more new mothers prefer diapers made with natural materials that are less likely to harm their babies and the planet. It is important to choose brands that are tried and true, but most importantly trusted by parents for decades. “When I learnt that Pampers has a new plant-based diaper with natural benefits, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on both the diapers and wipes.” Her love for the brand soon found her becoming a Brand Ambassador for Pampers Pure. Zeynab first used the product in the UK and realised that the diapers were noticeably more breathable than other options. “This is one example of choosing the right products for your baby. In my case, it helps protect Luca’s delicate skin – and that’s a huge relief as a new mother,” she says, and we’re sure most mums would agree. Zeynab also tells me that her family have been using the brand for years. “I honestly thought they must be too good to be true, and wondered where the compromise was going to be, because as with most eco-friendly baby products, there comes a sacrifice in performance.” After trying them on Luca, Zeynab says they were everything she hoped for. “I choose the softest fabrics for him and am very careful about the products I use. Diapers are no different.” From mum to mum, Zeynab vouches for Pampers Pure as they are free from perfume, lotion, latex and chlorine, made of super soft premium cotton, plant-based fibers and other thoughtfully selected, and responsibly sourced, materials. “The fact that the prints are adorable is an added bonus – I love the ones with cute animal characters.” As for any other advice she has for mums, Zeynab says, “It’s important to remember that young mothers are stronger than we think we are, and we can tackle any challenge and change in our babies,” she says, flashing that beautiful smile with dimples that captures her followers’ hearts.

BOUNCING BACK

Global fitness phenomenon, Kayla Itsines, believed she’d breeze through pregnancy and bounce back to full fitness in no time postpartum. In a one-to-one with Mother, Baby & Child during her recent visit to Dubai, she tells us how she learnt the hard way, and has since used her experience for the greater good of other mums - in creating her brand-new post-pregnancy fitness programme 28 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

I’ve followed Kayla Itsines on Instagram for a few years now. With more than 12 million followers and an immensely popular workout regime - the famous Bikini Body Guide (BBG) - she’s firmly established herself as a go-to fitness guru for women’s health across the world. After giving birth to baby Arna in April last year, she’s recently gone public about her pregnancy journey, her struggles during that time and her experiences in the aftermath of giving birth. The picture of health, she’s positively glowing in our one-to-one ahead of her recent bootcamp at Dubai Fitness Show. She begins our discussion by complimenting my nail polish colour and insists that she must take a picture for her sister, Leah - and I instantly feel at ease, as if I’m catching up with an old friend. Having last visited the Dubai in 2017, she says she’s excited to be back in the city she loves, thanks to its weather, culture and food. “I’m a huge fan of the food here,” she says. “I eat a predominantly Mediterranean diet so I love Dubai’s focus on Lebanese food, as they’re quite similar in many ways.” Having travelled to the UAE to embark on her first bootcamp in two years, Kayla concedes that had she been asked seven months ago if she’d be doing such an event at this point, she would have never believed it. “I thought I was going to really enjoy pregnancy. Everyone told me I would breeze through it, because I’m fit, strong and I eat well,” she says. “But ultimately every woman’s journey is different, and I found pregnancy really tough. And while the whole experience was incredible and I love Arna dearly, the aftermath hit me hard. Trying to bounce back to my prepregnancy form was much harder than I’d originally anticipated. I just wanted to know when I’d feel normal again.” She says this was ultimately the inspiration for her latest release; her postpregnancy programme, aimed at mums who feel like they're starting again on their fitness journeys. “I had a caesarean when giving birth to Arna, and felt that there was a distinct lack of support for C-section mums looking to return to fitness. Everything seemed to focus on those recovering from natural births,” she explains. “So in creating this programme, that’s one of the main things I have considered in constructing workout plans. I also never appreciated how time-poor mums are until becoming one myself, so you’ll notice much shorter workouts than those typically found in BBG.” When I ask what advice she would offer to new mums, she concedes that while it may sound like a vague statement, “listening to your body” is the most invaluable guidance she believes a woman can hear. “Ultimately, it was my body that told me I was pregnant in the first place. I got up one morning to go for my usual walk - yet all I could think the entire time was how ridiculously long and tiring it felt. I felt so sick.

Your baby will fall out of you if you keep squatting” was just one of the ridiculous myths I was told during pregnancy MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2020 | 29

H E A L T H

I even said to my fiancé Tobi, “I’m either dying or pregnant,” but luckily it was the latter, and it was the best news ever!” In the days following, she recalls her body changing. “I had extreme morning sickness, I couldn’t get out of bed,” she says. “I wanted to show women that having an active pregnancy was great - and sometimes it was. There were days when I felt okay to go for a walk, or do a workout. But I also got reflux, sciatic nerve pain and restless leg.” So despite ticking the boxes for someone who fits the seemingly perfect picture of health, the reality that this doesn’t guarantee an easy ride through pregnancy was a huge realisation for Kayla. But in keeping with her drive to maintain as active as possible during her journey meant that she was also subject to ludicrous myths from those who believed she could be putting her baby at risk. “You’ll squash your baby; your baby will fall out of you if you keep squatting; if you keep working out like this, you’ll give your daughter a complex; these were just some of the comments I received from those who were uneducated in maintaining active pregnancies,” recalls Kayla. “But ultimately, listening to your body and taking things at your own pace is all I can recommend.”

I just wanted to know when I’d feel normal again

Arna is now just over 9 months old, and being her mum is “such a blessing,” says Kayla. “A typical day for us involves us getting up and going for a walk, before heading to the gym where I do content creation and she stays with me. My days are scheduled around when she sleeps, but I’m lucky because we’re a digital business so I’m not tied to a 9-5 office job.” Over the coming 12 months, Kayla’s goal is to bond with her baby through travel. “By the time she reaches 1 year in April, she’ll have already been to four or five countries outside of Australia. I want her to learn about the world; it makes you wise, and I believe it’s so important that she knows there’s life outside the Adelaide bubble. I never travelled much as a child, so it wasn’t until I was working that I discovered so much more, and it really made me grow up quickly.” For more information on Kayla’s BBG Beginner post-pregnancy programme, visit kaylaitsines.com.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING Alison Rego, Founder of @PinksmyInk, shares tips on how she leads an environmentally conscious lifestyle

“We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors we borrow it from our children.” This saying caught my attention two years ago, as I was beginning to become more associated with climate change, understanding how we can contribute in small ways and thus, enabling children to adopt this process too. Here are a few significant changes to implement at home:

USE A WATER FILTER A filter is an easy option for home use, as it reduces the amount of plastic bottle usage at home. The one I use gives us 5,000 litres – two years’ worth of water – until the next filter change. This is a cost-saving and environmentally conscious method to adopt.

DITCH FAST FASHION My daughter and I sell our old clothes at flea market sales so that they can find a new home, and as a result we help minimise the amount of clothes that end up in landfills. Not everything can be recycled, and this is a great option for those who want to make way for the new. Remember to shop for eco-friendly materials and organic cotton whenever possible as well.

GO VEGAN This was the first change we adopted as I knew factory farming was one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas. It fuels climate change by releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and methane, adding to greenhouse gasses. It might not be easy making a complete switch to veganism instantly, but you can try eating vegan meals multiple times a week. When dining out, try to be conscious too. We’re lucky to have a great selection of eateries serving vegan food, such as The Flip Side Resto Bar, Soul Santé, Brambles, and Life and One. 34 | FEBRUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

PACK SMART Bamboo and metal lunch boxes and water bottles are sustainable, easy to clean, and a great alternative to plastic. You can also teach your child the benefit of using these materials over plastic. Citron has a great range to choose from. My daughter and I also turn away plastic straws whenever possible. You will often find us with a metal straw in our bag, as it can be reused.

CARRY A TOTE In the boot of my car, I keep a small bag and cloth bags, to keep myself from taking home plastic bags while grocery shopping. We also use mesh bags to weigh our fruit and vegetables, instead of the easily available plastic at stores.

MIND YOUR CONSUMPTION When we conserve water via our taps at home, on a larger scale, less water needs to be pumped and treated. This allows for a reduction of carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. The same applies with energy and air conditioning. Air conditioners emit chlorofluorocarbon (CFC’s) that have been depleting the ozone layer for decades, so try to switch it off when it’s not in use.

SHOP SEASONAL Buying fruit and vegetables in season contributes to less carbon emissions, as transportation of imported produce involves the use of fuel, that releases toxins into the air. It’s also important to research the ‘dirty dozen.'

ADOPT MINIMALISM Last, but not the least, adapting an ideology of minimalism can not only be incredibly useful in cutting costs, but also clutter. The best way to break the cycle would be to not contribute to it.

TEACHER’S PROFILE NADINE

Ecological Projects Lead Teacher at The Arbor School How did you get into this career? I grew up in Windsor Great Park in England, and so I was always immersed in nature as a child. My free time was spent exploring the woods, the plants and creatures who lived there. This instilled a passion for the natural world in me and so, when I became a teacher, I sought to impart this to the children in my care in any way I could. I remember vividly, in the beginning of my career, I created allotments with children, and it was so fulfilling to see their love for nature grow. I then continued my educational journey in The UAE when I moved here four years ago. This brought with it many new challenges and helped me to stretch and adapt my teaching to a new culture, environment and climate. I then specialised in teaching Science in primary, as this is my area of passion and helped me to explore the concept of Eco-Science. These early adventures in teaching children about the natural world sparked something in me which eventually led me to this unique school where I can explore this exciting new subject fully.

What excites you about your role? This is the only school like this in the world and so I feel incredibly lucky and privileged to be able to teach here, and especially in the role I have. The facilities are unrivalled; I never thought it would be possible to say that my classroom is a tropical ecosystem. It is totally surreal and genuinely the most exciting role I could possibly think of. Equally exciting is the freedom which I have to explore new research, topics and ideas, and to implement them in a dynamic way from day to day. The leadership team at this school are extremely open-minded and forward thinking and this makes it a genuinely inspiring working environment.

Challenges you face? The truth is that the educational philosophy of The Arbor School is unique and differs in important ways from mainstream, traditional education. Sustainability and environmental awareness are topics which are being discussed urgently all over the world, but that does not make it easy to introduce new ways of thinking and living to both adults and children. We are all the products of human evolution throughout history, and we have been conditioned to live in a particular way. This means that the message of sustainability needs to be reinforced regularly,

consistently and with compassion. To achieve this whilst still allowing children to flourish in traditional ways is a significant challenge, but one which I feel we at The Arbor School are rising to. The need for us to change our ways is clear for all to see; our work at The Arbor School is to put this into action and see how it is possible to effect real change. Luckily, we have the facilities, leadership and supportive parental community to achieve that here.

Your greatest achievement over the course of your career or at this school? It's knowing that every child I have taught has left my care with a greater understanding of the natural systems which make up our world. I regularly see children noticing the complexity and beauty of the relationships within nature independently due to their studies. Most importantly, I love to see children’s empathy for all living organisms blossom and the fruits of this empathy manifesting in their lives. It gives me hope that, as a society, we can help to address the imbalances we see in the natural world today.

How do you get students excited about the subject that you teach? I am very lucky. The natural world is as exciting as it gets and so children are instinctively passionate and inspired by it. The incredible biodomes and learning spaces at The Arbor School exploit this fact to great effect and make excitement a routine part of life here. Children are so enthusiastic about their EcoScience lessons, partly because they understand how lucky they are to have access to such incredible learning environments. My task is to take this precious, natural excitement and use it to fuel discovery, inquiry and deep understanding of the planet we live on.

One thing you would like to change about the academic system in the UAE? This is an easy one. I would absolutely love to see Eco-Science become a compulsory part of the curriculum not only in the UAE, but all over the world. I think this is not only desirable but absolutely necessary.

GIVING CHILDHOOD BACK TO CHILDREN Makram Bou Kheir, Communications Manager at Dubai Cares reveals why parents should encourage learning through play

As parents are becoming more aware of the importance of pre-school learning and its impact on their children and society at large, let’s step back and reflect on the fundamentals of how we can support our young children’s development from their earliest age by means of stimulation, communication and most importantly, play.

EARLY CHILDHOOD: SETTING THE FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE The first years of a child’s life set the foundation for their entire future growth. Brain development is fastest during the first years and is directly connected to the child’s physical development. A baby’s brain forms over 1 million new connections every second, a pace that is never repeated again during its lifetime, and over 80% of the brain is formed by the age of 3. In the same way we feed our children appropriate sustenance in order for them to grow, they also need us to engage in nurturing and stimulating interactions. In doing so from their earliest days, we set the foundations for their healthy development and help them reach their full potential. An important way of supporting our young children’s development is through communication. Language is a crucial part of a child’s development. Babies start listening before they are even born; they start hearing sound at 18 weeks of pregnancy, responding to noise or voices at 25-26 weeks, and can MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | FEBRUARY 2019 | 39

E D U C A T I O N

even recognise their mother’s voice in the third quarter. They take at least a year before speaking, but the exposure to their mother’s and father’s voices and the environment around them makes them understand the structure of languages much earlier. When we respond to babies’ babbles and gurgles, especially in the early years, we encourage two-way communication and allow children to develop their ability to listen, communicate, and express and understand feelings. This is why we should speak to our young children in a simple but intelligible way, using well-structured sentences and even rich vocabulary, and absolutely avoid simplifying our conversations with them.

LEARN THROUGH PLAY: OUR BRAIN’S FAVOURITE We can also support our young children’s development through recognising the crucial and often underestimated role of play in their lives. As American author Diana Ackerman famously said: “Play is our brain’s favourite way of learning.” When we think about our young children learning, we often imagine school desks, whiteboards and exercises. The truth is, however, that pre-school as well as school-going children also learn – and sometimes learn best – by playing hide-andseek, making up stories and even “making a mess” with paint. Therefore, at home as much as at school, we should work towards ensuring that children are encouraged to play and be exposed to all life-teaching aspects of play. Ideally, children’s learning environments should propose a wide variety of playing areas, in order to stimulate their various abilities. For instance, outdoor areas give children an opportunity to exercise and make the most out of their physical ability, while imaginary play areas allow them to tap into their creativity and curiosity, helping develop children’s imagination and sharpening their ability to conceptualise solutions. Physical play is especially important, as physical fitness is now considered as critical as mental fitness to their development. We as parents need to promote our children’s gross motor skills by engaging with them in physical activities such as climbing, running, cycling

and swimming, or even tidying up and moving objects around the house. Therefore, when we find our young children rolling around in dirt, climbing trees or chasing each other, we should recognise these as signs of healthy development. Last but not least, allowing our children to be bored is another equally important way of supporting their development. We as parents often can’t help but react to our children’s complaints about feeling bored, and sometimes resort to giving them access to digital entertainment such as YouTube videos or iPad games. But we should always keep in

40 | FEBRUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

mind that occasional exposure to boredom and alone time, promotes awareness and observation, and encourages a spirit of independence and self-consciousness. It gives an opportunity for our children to take the time to know themselves and their environments, so let them be bored sometimes and figure it out on their own. Children are our future. Let’s spend quality time with them, talk with them, play with them and let them explore their environments, so they can become the kind, generous and responsible citizens that the world needs.

CODE HAIR LADIES SALON Tucked away in a corner of Fraser Suites is this brightly-lit salon with friendly staff. The minute I arrived I was treated to a hot drink with freshly baked cookies as I waited to talk to Joe. My bangs had grown out and the rest of my hair was all the same length, not to forget it was incredibly dry and dehydrated, so something had to be done to restore my locks to its natural health. Joe quickly examined my hair and recommended the luxe caviar treatment. After thoroughly washing my hair, conditioning it and giving me a quick head massage, the hair specialist began mixing the mask. The Hairplexx Caviar anti-age restorative treatment nourishes hair, while giving it elasticity and strength. The caviar hair mask cream was mixed with serum and drops of caviar hair oil and placed onto my hair for 20 minutes. Why caviar? It’s rich in essential amino acids, protein and fatty acids, all of which restore hair. To enhance the mask absorption, the specialist used a fancy steam gun all over, before washing it out to reveal soft locks. I headed back to the seat to have a quick chat with Joe about my hair maintenance – or rather lack of – and styling. I tend to air dry my hair, hardly ever comb it, and just let it be. It may sound lazy, but it’s what works best for my hair. He brushed out the knots – which happened smoothly thanks

to the mask – and began cutting my hair in layers to give it definition and frame my face. I could tell Joe had years of experience under his belt, knew exactly what I needed for a fuss-free cut, and was quick. It’s the kind of place you could be in-and-out in 30-40 minutes, if you’re looking for a great cut and blow-dry. While I was at the salon, I saw Joe meet with a couple of loyal clients, coming in for hair extensions, colour recommendations for future appointments, and so on. He definitely seems like the go-to guy for hair! Haircut from Dhs160-210 and the caviar treatment is Dhs160-265 depending on the length and style. Contact +971 4 224 3436. Staycation: PARAMOUNT HOTEL DUBAI Have you visited this Hollywood-themed hotel yet?

50 | FEBRUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

REVIEW

Picture this: You’'re a child, a Paramount Pictures logo is on screen, and you’re filled with excitement to watch the movie that follows. That’s the level of excitement I encountered as I walked into the Paramount Hotel Dubai nestled in Business Bay. I found myself taking in every corner of the Hollywoodthemed hotel, from the grand piano in the lobby to The Godfather artwork, moving imagery walls in the check-in area, and unpublished movie scenes in every elevator.

ACCOMODATION

Being a huge Audrey Hepburn fan, I couldn’t wait to see my Suite. The foyer opened up to the living room coupled with views of the swimming pool below, a large-screen TV; a dining area to the left with tea-making facilities, including a Nespresso machine; and the en-suite bedroom on the right. As I walked into the bedroom, my eyes met the sleek marbled grand bathroom, Marlin + Goetz amenities, and standalone bathtub and walk-in shower. I quickly filled the tub for a hot soak with salts (provided) and headed for the bedroom which featured a large rug with a Breakfast at Tiffany’s quote, placed beneath the bed. The TV placed behind a mirror screen across the bed was hands-down my favourite design features in the room, followed by the dressing table mirror with vanity lights. The opulently designed suite features plenty of curated artwork, bespoke stage lighting, leather seating, a plush bed and a tripod lamp that makes you feel like you’re living on a glamorous movie set. REVIEW

FACILITIES The hotel is home to a gym and fitness studio, barbershop, beauty salon, spa with Moroccan hammam, kids’ studio club, and one of our favourite features, the dine-in cinema. Reviving the glamour of old Hollywood, the Paramount Screening Room has gathered inspiration from classics. The private dine-in cinema is the spot to relax back with a good movie, and in true Hollywood style, can be enjoyed with Joe & Seph’s freshly popped popcorn, homemade sliders, lobster rolls and truffle arancini.

DINING Get a taste of Californian coastal-inspired café, sneak away to the hidden den, and feast on the poolside food truck grub. We headed to the pool to top up our tans, sip on fresh concoctions and indulge in nachos and succulent burgers. Before dinner, we were prompted to visit the Flashback; a speakeasy bar and lounge hidden behind a secret door in the lobby - be prepared to be transported to the 1920’s Prohibition era! We headed to The Stage for dinner, an all-day dining restaurant that features an a la carte menu, split into various ‘Production’ styles. A burrata was shared between my dining partner and I, followed by juicy lamb chops for mains, and a hazelnut biscuit and semifreddo for post-production. For breakfast, we visited The Stage again, for an expansive buffet-spread that showcases Arabic specialties, salads, freshly baked bread, an egg station, Indian dishes and sweet treats.

The products, made in Italy, are also better for the environment as no oil, artificial chemicals are used during the process. The bed fillings are stuffed with upcycled plastic materials, so that less wastage ends up at the landfill. To make an impact, Project Blu works with local coastal communities in India and the Philippines - to collect plastic waste from oceans, rivers, beaches and landfills. The aim is to educate these communities and make plastic a valuable commodity to help reduce the problem. 80% of ocean plastic comes from the world's poorest nations and the brand’s primary objective is to prevent plastic from entering the ocean. TAKING CARE OF OLDER DOGS Pets in the City recommends these tips for your aging pet

Aging dogs care requirements differ from that of younger dogs and should be kept in mind when caring for your dog. Bring some basic changes into their daily routine and that will keep them happy and healthy, longer. DIET An aging dog’s diet needs food that is easier to chew and digest as well as foods that are low in calories. A balanced diet with high-quality ingredients, in appropriate amounts, is vital to maintain a good healthy weight. Your vet will advise on the best diet that is rich in fibre and nutrition and also allows for weight loss. EXERCISE Aging dogs experience difficulty doing physical exercises. Too much exercise can cause health issues and too little won’t support muscle development. Your dog’s brain also needs exercise and a selection of stimulating toys. VET Older dogs tend to have multiple health issues and require a vet check up twice a year. Nonapparent issues can be brought to light by the vet, in time to aid him. It’s cheaper to prevent diseases than it is to treat it. ORAL HYGIENE Brushing pets’ teeth is critical for pets, especially older dogs. Dental disease and decay can be avoided while maintaining your pet’s oral health. Special treats and toys can play a big role to help keep the teeth clean.

GROOMING Older dogs have special grooming needs that require regular ear cleaning, brushing and nail clipping and these help to prevent fleas and ticks, and protect paws and joints. Mobile grooming by Pets in the City will offer comfort

for your aging dog, personalized attention, and minimal stress, due to not having to commute to the groomers. Taking care of your older dog may be more demanding but these tips will surely help keep him/her in good health and by your side.
