EDITOR’S NOTE

was more than raising a child. It was the process of preparing leaders who are capable of shouldering responsibilities and leading development, a top priority for him.” Those were the words of HH Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of UAE Gender Balance Council, and President of Dubai Women Establishment, who praised HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on the 10th anniversary of his accession as Ruler of Dubai. In an article titled ‘Ten Years of Empowerment and Excellence’, Sheikha Manal said she had been privileged to be have been raised in the school of leadership led by Sheikh Mohammed, noting that, when she was a child, Sheikh Mohammed had taught her dedication, determination and the development of clear goals. It is with her wise, beautiful words that we begin this new chapter in the continuous success and evolution of Mother, Baby & Child. Our April issue marks the first step on, yet another, journey in support of motherhood, family and the future of our children. With Dubai’s Knowledge and Human

Development Authority’s (KHDA) very recent announcement on its re-focus on the fundamentals of education, this issue brings forward an important question: “Are we helping our children become future-ready?” We work as parents, community members, educators and media every day, making decisions to prepare children for their distant future lives, but how are we doing on this front? The Director-General of Dubai’s KHDA highlighted educating hearts, not just brains: “If they are happy, they’re going to read, they’re going to exercise, they’re going to see the world differently. Happy people learn better. Happy people don’t call in sick. Happy people will wear whatever uniform you give them.” Let us join the leaders in ensuring we are doing everything we could and going that extra mile, to help shape the future of our children exactly as we all envision it to be.

IN-DEPTH

A VERY SPECIAL PARENT

An exclusive meeting with scientist, VIP – and mother –

HE Dr Maryam Matar Many very eloquent words have been spent in homage to one of the Arab world’s most prodigious and honoured medical innovators, Her Excellency Dr. Maryam Matar. Listed as one of the 100 Most Powerful Arab Women, she is Founder and Chaiman of the UAE Genetic Diseases Association, and was previously Founder and Director-General of the Community Development Authority. Yet it’s often overlooked that so illustrious a figure is actually a Mum, confronting on a daily basis the issues facing working mothers everywhere - and with an agenda that’s even more packed than most! Here, she speaks exclusively to Mother, Baby & Child magazine…

Mother, Baby and Child | 13

PARENTING

yyWhat are the challenges of combining a career as a worldclass scientist with raising a young family?

Of course, the first thing I must say is that I am in a very fortunate position and am so very happy to be faced with a challenge of this kind! The important thing to realise is that there are certain priorities in each in area of life: for example, in terms of science, it is vital to stay ahead of the topical debates and innovations in your subject, and this takes quality time and dedication. Yet as well, being a parent means being there to see and experience the changes in your child and to share the challenges, concerns and joy these will bring. For example, no matter how busy my schedule, I set aside time to share my daughter Sara’s bath-time every day. This has become a powerful and special time for us both to be together. I think it also means a lot to her: I notice, for example, that while other children will spend their money on sweets and toys, Sara will often buy bath accessories! Making sure that you can spend this time together – no matter how demanding the other commitments on your time – is so fundamental for me. Another way in which Sara and I spend time together actually started on March 25th this year, with her first public speaking engagement. I am asked to speak in public quite a lot, and it will be wonderful to work with Sara to help her develop this skill. I can see that this will be a major part of our togetherness as she gets a little older. yyHow has parenthood changed your priorities and added a fresh dimension to life?

It has added so many wonderful qualities to my life, but I will not 14 | Mother, Baby and Child

myself – took the view that I would go on to be Minister. Yet, the reality is that I had to adjust this goal in the light of parenthood, at least for the time being. I had been privileged to enjoy a very smooth career path, but saw that other priorities really needed my attention. In the future, I may get this particular career back on track, but as for now, there are wonderful professional openings that I have been able to combine very favourably with parenthood. yyWhat are some of the key ‘learning curves’ of parenting as you see them?

pretend that it has not altered my goals and career path a little, too. Many of your readers will know that back in 2008, I was Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health and Primary Healthcare at the Ministry. Some people – including perhaps

people in the community. What is more, my own values have become much more grounded. A recent example is how I went to a friend’s birthday celebrations wearing a simple abaya, very basic jewellery and the same Prada bag I take with me everywhere. I could tell that a lot of people thought Maryam Matar should arrive with spectacular jewels, but I want to show that ‘me is still me’ - and it is what is in the heart that is really most important. Perhaps, I would never have started thinking this way without the journey of parenthood. yyHas being a mother altered the way that Society and the media see you as a leading local personality?

Yes, definitely, it has. I think that many men in particular see me differently, and that is the case wherever I travel, whether to a

science colloquium in Europe or to an event here in the UAE. They behave in a more respectful and reverential way. Having said that, I feel the media have adjusted very easily to my being a parent. It has not replaced their portrayal of me

as a young woman, but instead has added more depth to the image they like to present of Maryam Matar. yyDo you still pursue your personal objectives of being a Nobel prizewinner in 2032?

Oh yes – I even visualise the awards ceremony and hear my name being called, ushering me up to the stage! I think about holding the trophy in my hand and even the weight that it would have! Perhaps these dreams are not so unrealistic, since I am privileged that my field of genetics – which is called Epigenetics – brings a genuinely new understanding of who we are and the genetic strand that we will pass on to our children. By 2032, these breakthroughs should be very well- developed and documented, and be a key part of the way we think about society and the environment and the impact they have on the individual. Mother, Baby and Child | 15

PARENTING

Just as an aside, talking about breakthroughs in genetics, did you know that the experiences you have during your first Trimester of pregnancy actually go on to impact the genetic code that your grandchildren will inherit? This is how profound our understanding of the genetic code is now becoming. yyHow would you describe some of the major opportunities here in the UAE for children as they grow up?

The UAE’s vision is all about achieving the benchmarks and excellence of a world-class nation, and to be a leader, not a follower. We see this in every area of life here, from architecture and urban planning, through to the diversification of the economy and remarkable achievements such as the Expo 2020 win. Any child growing up with this background has a great head-start in life, especially if we bear in mind that the UAE is a great model of social and ethnic integration, where citizens of all nations can feel at home and chose to participate in that future as much as they wish. yyAs a potential Government minister, are there are any ‘family-friendly’ reforms that you might one day introduce?

There is one that I would certainly introduce. I want to make it law that the long, formal version of every woman’s name should show her mother’s name. At present, everything is defined in relation to the father, but – come on! – it is time to celebrate the role our mothers play.

Relive Life-Changing Discoveries

10 YEARS OF NOBEL PRIZE MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS COME TO THE UAE In 2015, for the first time in the Arab World, the Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation (MBRF), in association with Nobel Foundation, hosted the ‘Nobel Prize Museum: Ideas Changing the World’ exhibition at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Discoveries and inventions which had transformed the face of science and medicine were showcased at the museum, which brought the achievements of Nobel Laureates to life.

PARENTING The museum’s success echoed across the region, in every UAE school, its inventions discussed among students and families marvelling at what it had to offer upon every visit. After attracting thousands of visitors from different nationalities and community groups, the exhibition was turned into an annual event to be held for the next ten years, in a first-of-its-kind partnership in the Middle East. This year, another fascinating exhibition was held from February 21 to March 21; ‘Exploring Life: Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine’ was held at Children’s City, in Dubai Creek Park, to help children understand the contributions of Nobel Laureates towards serving humanity through the health and medical fields with breakthroughs and inventions presented in the simplest, and most marvellous, of ways. In an exclusive interview with Jamal bin Huwaireb, managing director of MBRF, Mother, Baby & Child looks into the future of innovation and science, especially for the younger generations being brought up in the UAE, in light of the ten-year Nobel partnership. yy We are looking forward to the ten-year partnership with the Nobel Foundation. Please give us an overview of the upcoming yearly exhibitions and what children and parents can expect.

Over the next ten years, MBRF will organise the Nobel Museum Exhibition in other cities in the UAE as well as other Arab countries. At this stage, children and parents in the region can look forward to more creative activities and events during the exhibition which will take them through a closer encounter with the Nobel Laureates and their achievements. yy What were the highlights of this year’s exhibition and how did children respond to the scientific discoveries? The Nobel Museum Exhibition 2016 has built on the remarkable success of the first edition held in Dubai last year. This year, the exhibition has featured three specialised workshops led by Nobel

CHILDREN AND SCIENCE

I believe the Nobel Museum Exhibition, with its exciting and fun-filled activities, will definitely enable younger generations to embrace the innovation and knowledge represented by Nobel Prize winners. Our aim will be to empower future generations in the Arab world with knowledge, and inspire them with sustainable solutions developed by some of the most innovative minds in the world. yy How does MBRF plan on supporting families in the future and what other similar initiatives do you have in the pipeline?

experts on topics such as physiology and medicine, the role of molecules in the development of human life and the experiences of Nobel Laureates in these fields, which has inspired children to learn more about the contributions of Nobel Prize winners. The exhibition has also enabled children and young people to understand the contribution of Arab and Islamic scholars in solving medical problems.

yy In your opinion, how can we further instil a love for science among our children? How will you encourage little inventors and scientists? Children are, by nature, curious to learn about new things and everything around them. We need to create the right opportunities for them to inspire their creativity and instil an innovative mentality within them.

We promise you more programmes and exhibitions which promote the dissemination of knowledge among families and document human achievements to enrich minds. Our aim is to encourage youngsters to study science and aspire to win a Nobel Prize of their own. For a look into MBRF’s upcoming Nobel Museum exhibitions, please visit www.mbrf.ae. BRILLIANT YOUNG MINDS

The Inventor

Genius tends to be discovered in the most fascinating of ways. Like any child, then nine-year-old Emirati Adeeb al Blooshi was not a fan of doing house chores. When asked by his mother to clean his room, his answer was to – simply – create a robot that would do it for him. Inventing a device which vibrated with batteries and feathers, his creation managed to do the job.

26 | Mother, Baby and Child

CHILDREN AND SCIENCE This would have come as a surprise to any other mother. Not for Adeeb’s though, as he had developed his first medical apparatus by the age of five. Seeking to help his father swim after a trip to the beach, the young inventor decided to upgrade his father’s prosthetic leg which, by not being waterproof, had prevented him from doing so. The UAE’s wise leadership, and the entire world, have since opened up for Adeeb. Awarded the Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award, the 11-year-old’s ambitions have no limits. After his science tour of the world, Adeeb can only dream big. yy By the time you were five, you had developed your first medical apparatus; how have your parents and school encouraged you to work this hard?

First of all, I would like to say that whatever I am today, it is because of my supportive parents and the values they have brought me up through. I was always encouraged to believe in myself and work towards accomplishing my dreams, no matter how big or small they were. While my parents believed in me and gave me all the moral support I needed, my school inspired me to excel through education and creativity. The friendly nature of my teachers helped me open up my ideas and thoughts, which has given me a lot of confidence. yy You have invented a wonderful device to help your father; tell us about your feeling

when you first saw him use it.

When I first saw him use it, I felt very happy that I was able to solve my dad's problem and it made me even happier when I saw a smile on his face. He is my role model, so I am glad I was able to help him. After that, I made it a point to reach out to other people around the world and solve their problems through my inventions and ideas. yy What about that cleaning device? Tell us about the funny story behind this invention.

My mother is like the secret superhero of

MOTHER TO MOTHER What Adeeb’s mum had to say: “Be your child's best friend. Believe in your child, bring them up with good morals and values and always make them feel special. When your child sees you like a friend, they will open up and learn so much more from you. In this way, you can ensure the child will learn good lessons of faith, peace and love more easily.”

the family. She does so much of the work and ensures the family is happy, so I always feel like I have the best mother in the world. Since she is busy most of the day trying to keep us all happy, I wanted to do something for her that would help her and also make her feel loved. So, one day, I decided to invent this small, but cute, cleaning robot which could help my mother around in cleaning the house. yy What is the most important thing you have learned on your science tour?

One of the most important things I learned is how to benefit humanity and spread peace through education, technology and science. That is my dream and the vision of this great nation. yy Do you have any plans for an invention you have not told anyone about? Tell us about it!

Yes I do, but it will be a big surprise.

The Astronaut It runs in the family. Dana al Blooshi is Adeeb’s younger sister. Growing up as a part of the same scienceloving family, she was encouraged to work for what she loved. Hence, Dana reached for the stars, literally. Named “Dana of the Emirates” by His Highness Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Dana looked up to her brother following in his footsteps, and later joining him at the Space Center Houston’s Space College. The first Emirati child to get involved in exciting programmes in the fields of aeronautics and space administration at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States, Dana was awarded nine certificates and two gold medals. yy Your family values are characterised by a focus on creativity and innovation, how has this helped build your ambitious character?

God bless my parents; I would like to thank them. Their love for science and support throughout have made me feel more confident and unique – they are the world’s greatest parents. yy Tell us about your brother’s influence on you; would you consider him your role model?

Adeeb is both a brother and an inspiration. He is my role model and friend, and I have learned so much from him as I used to shadow him during 28 | Mother, Baby and Child

our younger years at all of his scientific conferences and trips. He has the kindest heart I have ever seen, and he is very sensitive, so no matter how busy or tired he was, he would guide me whenever I had any questions. I wish every girl in the world a brother like him!

THE BRAINIACS

yy You have done so much with NASA! Tell us about this experience.

My experience at NASA was both fantastic and fascinating. I took part in an ongoing, yearly training program with them and the scientific value of such an experience is infinitely beneficial and inspiring.

I have undergone space and robotics trainings – on land and underwater – in the US and graduated as a top student, in addition to living in zero-gravity conditions. We would be assigned on missions outside the space station, which was difficult and risky as any mistake could affect the entire mission’s success. My training lasted for two months and a half, non-stop, from 8 am until 4 pm daily, but I was overjoyed because this is what I love. yy How has your NASA training affected your schoolwork?

It had no effect whatsoever; my training took place during the summer holidays, so there was no conflict. yy What else would you like to say about the path you have chosen?

I would like to thank my country’s wise leadership for the immense support and indescribable honour of being named Dana of the Emirates – such a precious meaning is attached to my name, and I am forever-thankful for His Highness Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s support.

My future plans are huge and, to me, the sky is not even the limit. You can be on the lookout for more surprises!

She focuses on developing trusting, respectful, honest and affectionate relationships with her students and emphasises the importance of literacy. INSPIRING TRIBUTES On Teachers, Science and Education

P

rofessor Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge, released a new video which paid tribute to the math teacher who inspired him, ahead of the Global Teacher Prize 2016 which was held in Dubai, UAE in March. Here is what he had to say: “It all starts, with the seed of love. The love of music, the love of history, for me it was the love of science. At Saint Albans School, there was an inspirational maths teacher, Mr Tahta. He opened my eyes to the blue print of the universe itself, mathematics. I wasn't the best student at all. My handwriting was bad, and I could be lazy. Many teachers were boring. Not Mr Tahta, his classes were lively and exciting. Everything could be debated. Together we built my first computer, it was made with electro-mechanical switches. Thanks to Mr Tahta, I became a professor of mathematics at Cambridge, in a position once held by Isaac Newton. I have spent my life attempting to unlock the mysteries of the universe. When each of us thinks about what we can do in life, chances are, we can do it because of a teacher. Behind every exceptional person, there is an exceptional teacher. Today, we need great teachers more than ever. We must always remember, Teachers Matter.” – Stephen Hawking

PAGE-TURNING MAGIC

The Art of Crafting a Children’s Story “A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.” C.S. Lewis , Novelist interviews Al Marzooqi for her very own perspective on crafting the perfect story. yy How early did you start writing and how what stories were you most interested in? I started writing at a very young age. Then, growing into an adult, I have always loved children, and always been interested in their problems and concerns, with plenty of messages to direct at them. Hence, I found writing to be one of the best practices through which we could alter a child’s behaviour, while subliminally instilling plenty of positive values. As we know, stories often attract children, if anything because of the wonderful illustrations. The role children’s stories play in development can only be fully understood by examining how society has evolved as a result of every syllable, little detail, colourful illustration and every precious storytelling session which has built dreams, bridged gaps and brought characters and scenes to life. Storytelling, as enchanting and personal as it may be, comes naturally to human beings; after all, we all have a story to tell or a twist to put on every story we are going to tell. What differentiates a good story from a not-so-fascinating one, however, is how helpful it is in assisting the storyteller as they deliver it, in 38 | Mother, Baby and Child

making it as magical as can be. With regular sold-out workshops on writing children’s books at the Dubai International Writers’ Centre, Emirati author Shaima Al Marzooqi is a celebrated novelist and columnist. Born in 1988, Al Marzooqi graduated from Zayed University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Writing from a young age, she was always passionate about reading, believing that it had a significant impact on her language, thoughts and personality. In light of her participation at the Emirates Festival of Literature held on March 2016, Mother, Baby & Child

yy How has your degree in Early Childhood Education helped you in becoming a children’s author? My Early Childhood degree has impacted me a lot. In order to write for young children, you need to know how they think, their brain’s mechanisms, likes and dislikes, needs and behaviours, ways of solving problems – even how they imagine and their imagination’s capacity. My degree has helped me understand many concepts about childhood and being in touch with them at all times as you are writing.

CHILDREN AND LEARNING

yy Give us some tips and secrets from your hit workshops; what would you teach children who are looking to become bestselling authors and how can their mothers encourage them?

A mother needs to encourage her children to read for their own benefit and knowledge. We absolutely must instil in them an appreciation for reading and teach them its benefits over their selfdevelopment, language development and life skills. When children fully comprehend the importance of reading, and family and school play a role in fostering this skill, developing it and familiarising them with it, the child gets accustomed to it and loving it. Hence, there would be no concerns whatsoever over their future as they would become avid readers constantly seeking both education and leisure. I believe there is no fun without benefits. Make sure you always encourage your children to read, and I mean read. A writer is like a radar which catches and captures ideas from their surroundings, only to translate them into fun yet educational stories. Additionally, a mother needs to

personally encourage her child to keep writing, and patience is crucial when it comes to development and growth. yy What is the best way for a mother to read a story to her child and what should she be aware of?

Read with your child and get together as a family to discuss your readings. Get closer to your children and speak to them about the importance of reading and its role in self-development. Take your children over to libraries and literary events, and help them choose the right

books which are fun yet educational at the same time. yy What about women, how can they follow in your footsteps?

In life in general, I do not see any difficulty when it comes to my passion, and this should be the case for other women as well. There may be challenges, which is normal, but you should always overcome them with knowledge and its pursuit, in addition to, of course, always reading.

It takes a lot to put on a good show, and a lot more to put on a good Disney show, which involves embodying the spirit of characters which generations after generations have watched, keeping record of their every move, memorising their best lines and even creating friends out of them for company within brilliant imaginations.

Guille: When I perform in Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival as Buzz Lightyear. My favourite moment is when I see all the children in the audience screaming with excitement for Buzz! It is a joy to perform for the children all around the world.

To find out more about what goes into a Disney Live! show, Mother, Baby & Child Editor Dina Maaty interviews two Disney performers, Charlotte Plowright and Guille Flores, ahead of the Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival, where Mickey Mouse and his band of friends, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy, and more will bring joy to thousands of spectators in Dubai.

yy For such an energy-filled show, there have to be tons of funny on-set moments. Can you give us some examples? Charlotte: Anything can happen in live theatre, that is the beauty of it. It could be a wardrobe malfunction, a missed cue or even a performer falling over! It can be so funny to the performers on stage when something does not quite go as planned, but the audience may not even be aware of it.

yy In your opinion, what is the most fun Disney story to perform and why? Charlotte: The most fun story to perform is Aladdin. I absolutely love playing the role of Princess Jasmine and dancing with Aladdin. Together, we have so much fun performing the high-energy number ‘Friend Like Me’.

yy You have to think on your feet and disguise any mistakes by performing a suitable contingency. After all, the show must go on! Guille: Touring with my fellow Disney Live! Cast and crew you can always expect fun to ensue. We are a big family who come together to put on the best show for our guests. We have so much

fun, it is hard to name one situation. However, I will say that when you come to the show, you too can expect to have lots of fun with over 25 of your favourite Disney characters. yy What is the best thing about the character you portray?

Charlotte: I portray the role of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin. To me, she is the ultimate Princess; she lives in a Palace! Princess Jasmine is a dreamer, who is free spirited, confident and kind. She is incredibility independent and always stands up for what she believes in, which results in her falling in love with Aladdin, even though he was a “street rat”. Guille: What I love about portraying the role of Buzz Lightyear is that I have the chance to inspire young children to bring out their inner space ranger and be brave and strong, to always be themselves. A MOTHER’S TRAGEDY TURNS INTO INSPIRATION The Story of Baby Lucia yy By: Sandrine Piedras

“They told us there would not be any ashes because at this young age the bones were mostly cartilage. On the same day, I ran to a tattoo shop and got a tattoo. I wanted her to have existed. I needed proof for the world around me and myself.” Entering the NICU – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – is a frightening experience which no mum and dad are ever prepared for. It can turn the greatest adventure, parenthood, which we all look forward to, into an episode of uncertainty 42 | Mother, Baby and Child

and fear that almost nobody ever speaks about. Pregnancy is a time of sharing, of strong emotions, an intense period for the parents-to-be, an adventure composed of many steps, every day, a journey on a

mostly well-marked path led by soothing, skilled medical staff. However, when suddenly a few weeks before the scheduled date you end up in the emergency unit because you start to bleed slightly and lose some fluids, your life is suctioned by a tornado which takes and shakes you in all directions. You most likely had a C-section as an emergency procedure like myself; you are not ready to have your baby, your hormones are crashing down, you cannot touch your baby, plus, you need to pump every three hours. It is a nightmare. All you want is to have your baby in full health and in your arms. Instead, you become the outside observer of a transparent aquarium in which your child is connected to an array of tubes and sensors, which only allow for minimum contact. NICU is a world apart, with its many opaque codes, rhythms, sounds and smells. Many things are to be discovered and understood for oneself, as the highly-skilled staff is 200% focused on the welfare and survival of your child.

My daughter Lucia was my first child. She was born premature on September 19th, 2015 at the age of 29 weeks and 4 days. She died of a grade 4 IntraVentricular Haemorrhage (IVH) on November 10th of that same year, after 51 days spent at the clinic. Going back home without my baby was an almost insurmountable experience to live, but I could thankfully count on my husband, family, friends and also other NICU mums who had lived similar experiences at the same time, even though we all had different endings. We had the cremation in France, and they told us there would not be any ashes because at this young age the bones were mostly cartilage. On the same day, I ran to a tattoo shop and got a tattoo. I wanted her to have existed. I needed a proof for the world around me and myself . From this experience, I left having made a promise to my daughter that her short life would leave a footprint on earth, in addition to her indelible presence in our hearts and souls. It is from that promise that the Survivor Guide in Dubai’s NICU was born; it focuses on vital information pages that

any mum arriving at the NICU should know: • Rules of the NICU • Strange machines found there • A glossary of abbreviations and medical terms • Necessary logistics and administrative steps to be taken • Support groups in Dubai • Tips for breastfeeding and other practices • What to do on the first day you come back home • How to cope, how to be a parent • A wonderful success story This welcome guide was created not only from pain, tears and love, but also the joy of getting to know amazing women who had went through hell with me and helped me grow as a woman, wife and mother. I hope my baby Lucia lives through this guide and can help as many mothers as she could. DEAR DIARY My daughter Aariana is four-and a-half years old. The most significant change her presence in my life has brought is that I have become more aware and conscious of what is really important in my life. She has led me to question what I really want, how I can create value in my life or that of others and what are the most fulfilling things – whether at work, in my relationships or in the way I lead my life now. yy Manika Dhama Writer & Journalist

Life’s most treasured moments

Parenting involves a lot of ‘functional’ elements. I have tried to make these and all moments with her about conversations and sharing. The hugs, storytelling and dancing without an occasion are all treasured moments because kids just fill you up with feelings that you can’t always describe.

Biggest “aha!” moment as a mother

Oh so many! It began with the time the doctor said I’d have a daughter. Unforgettable moments have been there each day watching her grow into a very opinionated four-yearold, who, recently, upon being asked what she would like to be when she grows up, said: “playing guitar, scooter-ing and eating cupcakes.”

Most difficult part of pregnancy

My pregnancy was one that involved 44 | Mother, Baby and Child

a lot of travelling for work in the first five months, which I enjoyed because with a baby you are never alone. I even took a free-wheeling Eurotrip in the sixth month,

breathing in the wonderful air at Engelberg in Switzerland, sitting out most rides at Disneyland Paris, walking down all the steps of Eiffel Tower and roaming the streets of Amsterdam. The only terrifying moment was when a routine test had shown hints of a virus that could potentially harm the foetus. I cross-checked the results with specialists, in person, on web forums and via mail, including with a doctor who was an authority on the subject. It was only when he, and all others, confirmed that all was fine did I go back to breathing easy.

Favourite kids’ fashion brand

Since the beginning, I found Mothercare products to be great in terms of quality, design, etc. For her clothes now, I like smart casuals from Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, Gap and H&M. Their kids’ range is less “pink & frills are for girls” and more stripes, polkas and solid shades which I love.

DEAR DIARY

THE MOMMY DIARIES

I have the most amazing relationship with my daughter Isabella, everything we do together is fun, no matter what – whether we laugh, read or it is just a bedtime story, it is unique, unconditional love.

yy Leyla Brunto n Fashion Designer & Blogger

Proudest “mama” moment

Most recently, upon hearing that Isabella was the youngest and best in her music school. There are too many to list, everything she does makes me proud!

Biggest mess your child has ever made

When she made spaghetti Bolognese with her daddy, that was quite fun – enough said. One thing your child loves the most Isabella loves her bedtime dog; she has had that toy since birth. She named it Doogish, and the little grey, cute thing travels with us, even now, wherever we go.

Best and most useful item you own as a mum

Being a full-time mum and working in the fashion industry can be challenging. When I do not get my hair appointment on time, there comes my lifesaver, and latest obsession, hair clips from thetrendinghair. com.

BABY’S GONE TO SLEEP Sleep Training Myths Debunked!

yy By: Natalie Willes Baby Sleep Consultant/Trainer

Have you ever stopped to think about what the definition of sleep training really is? Unfortunately, several incorrect sleep training stereotypes exist – from shutting the door on a newborn for 12 hours, to eliminating all night-time feedings, to surrendering your family values to a sleep trainer who stays overnight at your home for several weeks – we have heard it all. 46 | Mother, Baby and Child

THE BABY BIT

With all the different parenting philosophies and advice, it is easy to get lost in a whirlwind of information. No matter what sleep preferences you believe in for your baby, read on to learn what sleep training really is, and what it does not have to be. Sleeping through the night

“Sleeping through the night” is the single biggest misnomer in the realm of sleep training. In actuality, no human goes to sleep and stays asleep all night. Babies and adults alike usually wake up between 3-6 times each night! When a person (baby or adult) is an independent sleeper, that means they are able to put themselves to sleep from these normal nocturnal arousals. However, a child will only know how to put themselves back to sleep throughout the night if they are able to fall asleep 100% on their own for all naps and at bedtime.

Zero night-time feedings

Sleep training does not necessarily equate to baby sleeping through the night without any nighttime feedings – and sleep training certainly does not mean the elimination of night-time feedings if baby is hungry. Regardless of the information learned from countless baby sleep books, fellow parents and strangers at the grocery store, the fact remains that: A child’s parent and paediatrician are most equipped to decide whether or not that child still needs a night-time feeding(s).

Parents know their baby best. If a baby is waking up in the middle of the night due to hunger, a feeding should be given. For the overwhelming majority of babies over the age of four months, more than one– two a night is not necessary. If your child is at a healthy weight and their paediatrician has okayed fewer or no night-time feedings, parents can rest assured that most or all of baby’s nighttime wake-ups are not directly due to being woken up by hunger. Finally, if a child is truly waking up due to hunger, then they should be fed and fall immediately Mother, Baby and Child | 47

PARENTING back to sleep, putting themselves to sleep throughout the rest of the night with relative ease. If a child is still waking repeatedly at night, it is likely that few or none of the feedings are due to hunger and are instead due to the fact that baby is relying on the feeding to put himself back to sleep.

commit to not physically facilitating their child’s sleep, but visits and comfort are almost always okay. Remember that when a baby is given the necessary space to learn what it feels like to take control over their body and allow himself to fall asleep, he will eventually (and usually quickly) learn how to fall asleep on his own.

Another common sleep training myth is that hiring a sleep consultant means the consultant stays overnight at your home, gets paid every hour through the night to work their so-called magic and teach your baby to sleep through the night. This definitely does not have to be the case.

In most cases, it is not advisable to consider sleep training a baby younger than 16 weeks of age. Sleep training a baby aged between four to six months usually yields the fastest results with the least amount of overall crying, but it really is never too late, nor is there any age above 16 weeks in which it is inappropriate, to sleep train a baby.

A stranger staying the night at your home

The vast majority of sleep consultants have one in-person or video conference consultation, usually in the light of day, followed by turning back a personalised plan and being available for follow-up support. A good consultant can gather all the information they need about your family from whichever initial questionnaire they have you fill out, combined with the hour-long consultation. Finally, the best consultants are available for heavy followup support, especially via text and email, so that they can answer questions, spot issues, and tweak the plan if needed. Crying it out – all night long

The biggest elephant in the room when we talk about sleep training is crying it out, or the “CIO” method. No parent wants to hear their baby cry, especially with all the contradicting and often misleading messages regarding the potential harm it may cause for baby. In my extensive experience working with babies, protesting during sleep training is because baby is frustrated they are not getting help to fall asleep. In almost every single case of sleep training for infants and toddlers, some form of checking in and comforting baby during the falling asleep process is possible. During sleep training, parents need to 48 | Mother, Baby and Child

Rigid sleep habits for a newborn baby

The reason we avoid sleep training newborns is because they are not always cognitively capable of falling asleep without assistance. Even in cases where a very young infant is able to fall asleep

unassisted, they are usually not cognitively able to sustain a regular sleep schedule with regular naps. Meaning, even if a twomonth-old can fall asleep without help, they are not usually capable of abiding by the wake times or nap lengths necessary in order to successfully sleep train. Adhering to harsh rules

A sleep consultant’s main role is to guide parents in how to help their child learn to fall asleep without assistance. If the techniques or advice recommended by a sleep consultant make mum or dad feel uncomfortable, the sleep consultant should be prepared to make adjustments according to what works best for the family. In fact, a good sleep consultant should tell you in significant detail exactly what their sleep program is like before they allow you to hire them. Even when I have clients reach out to hire me on the spot, I always call and speak with them first, outlining my methods and going over what they can expect, so that they go into the process with eyes wide open. If a parent is not comfortable with a certain consultant’s style, they should keep searching until they find someone whose techniques they feel comfortable with and with whom they feel they can develop a good rapport. Final thoughts

No matter how you slice it, sleep training comes down to one thing – helping your child learn to fall asleep wholly unassisted. That means going down with their eyes wide open, and falling completely asleep without the help of a parent, caretaker or other prop such as a swaddle, pacifier or moving car. Sleep training may take a few days of dedication and persistence, but the benefits of having a baby who knows how to fall asleep on his own at bedtime and nap times, and fall back asleep when awoken, is the secret ingredient, and the correct definition of sleep training. With the proper sleep training methods, the phrase “sleep like a baby” takes on a whole new meaning!

THE E-AFFAIR A Psychological Perspective

54 | Mother, Baby and Child

RELATIONSHIPS

Social media platform popularity has been on a worldwide rise for the past few years. This year, Facebook Middle East and North Africa (MENA) announced that, as of December 31, 2015, more than 120 million people in the region were using the platform every month. Across the MENA region, almost 83% of individuals came back to Facebook every day. Social Media and Marital Problems There are no regional studies linking the increasing usage of a popular social media platform such as Facebook to a rise in e-affairs. However, According to the Family Guidance Department in the UAE, divorce rates and court-case marital problems have increased by at least 30% last year, with 5060% of crises involving the use of social media. “Social media is constantly being deemed among the main causes of marital problems, which can lead to divorce as couples dedicate less quality time to each other, or even start ignoring their spouses altogether,” says Dr Hanan Kandil, specialist psychiatrist at Zulekha Hospital. “Very often, instead of facing problems as they arise, they tend to sweep them under the rug, which usually results in a widening of the communication gap,” she adds. Hence, communication channels which are often considered among the positive attributes of the ongoing social media frenzy, are cut – usually subconsciously – with the help of wrong attitudes and behaviours. Does a heavy involvement with social media on both the husband Mother, Baby and Child | 55

FOR YOU

and wife’s parts make a difference in the impact of a possible marital crisis? Experts highlight that an obsession with social media from both parties is highly likely to make the relationship suffer, with the problem usually only discovered at the point of irreversible damage. “Humans have fixed time and mental energy resources. Therefore, partners dedicating an excessive amount of time to online activities deprive their relationship of the same exact portion they would otherwise spend in each other’s company, learning to enjoy doing things together,” explains Dr Kandil. Another important factor is the psychological backdrop of e-affairs; the human mind often creates a justification system as a result, and in support, of the addiction. “Many people who have an online affair do not view it as the same as having a physical one. They tend to justify this as ‘not really cheating’. However, it is in fact, the same. It can be even more addicting to those who engage in these types of affairs and more devastating to the families affected by them,” says Dr Farida M. Nasr, psychiatry specialist at Jefferson Regional Medical Centre, USA. 56 | Mother, Baby and Child

partner’ creates an illusion of fascination: “Individuals are often unaware that online lives are, on many occasions, censored, curated or even entirely faked while in real life relationships they face both positive and negative situations. This is why comparing one’s relationship can easily trigger resentment leading to a crisis,” adds Dr Kandil. How to minimise the impact of social media on relationships:

How does an e-affair really develop and why? A seemingly harmless beginning can evolve into something more, and that is where the true danger lies. Whether the two parties connecting on the platform are complete strangers or colleagues, acquaintances, or ex-partners, the frequency of conversations within such a set-up creates a lasting bond which almost always transcends what was initially intended. Moreover, the trap of the ‘perfect

•  Plan and limit the use of social media. •  Prioritise family time so everybody wilfully takes part in activities they agree to and enjoy. •  Listen to each other with the aim of solving problems and helping your partner feel comfortable and loved. Try not to judge, blame or confront your partner. •  Married couples with children should make an effort to arrange for time without them every once in a while. •  Couples should regularly discuss their expectations within the relationship. They can sign up for pre-marriage workshops to learn about compromise in marriage and the openness and acceptance of trait differences in their partners.

THE MYTH OF ROMANTIC EXPECTATIONS Why Hubby is Your Prince Charming?

So many factors may contribute to the myth of romantic expectations. Media plays a huge role because of romantic comedies and novels, magazines, and Disney movies like Cinderella, which teach women – very early on – that all we have to do is wait, and a “Prince Charming” who is perfect in every way (has no flaws!), will magically pop into our lives out of nowhere, rescue us, and we would ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after!

yy By: DeAnna Lorraine Professional Relationship Coach & Matchmaker

With no marital issues, no communication conflicts, this man will bring us flowers and romantic gifts all the time (and be a major hunk by the way). Wow, what a dream life!

But that is just it. Those kinds of expectations and ideals are just that – a dream. A fantasy. The idea of a Prince Charming or a “dream man” has really imprisoned women in a box of unrealistic expectations when it comes to marriage. 58 | Mother, Baby and Child

RELATIONSHIPS what we perceive as “flaws” in the good man we are with. That focus on what we think is “missing” or not ideal then actually creates and perpetuates a feeling of dissatisfaction and unhappiness in what may otherwise be a good and loving marriage. What you focus on always expands. So, if you focus on the 20% of your man that you do not like or that “does not fit your ideals”, then you are going to grow more and more disappointed and irritated with it. The more we think about it, the less happy we are, and the more we spend time wondering if “the grass is greener” somewhere else. Little does the man we are married to know that he is constantly being tested by us as we are comparing and contrasting him to our Prince Charming! So, another unintended consequence of these comparisons, is that we may inadvertently make the man we are with feel inadequate, or chip away at his selfconfidence over time, thereby making him less motivated to do nice things for us and make us happy. A very important thing to understand about the male species is that men actually thrive on women accepting them and acknowledging them, not us disapproving of them and acting disappointed in them. A good man actually instinctively loves to make his woman happy. It breaks his heart and feelings of self-worth when he feels like he is disappointing her. When women become fixated on this dream man, they can become quickly dissatisfied with their own. He may be relatively attractive and have qualities that make him a great husband or father – including loyalty, honesty, patience, affection and humour – but she thinks: “Hmmm, maybe I should have someone who is more handsome or hilarious or who compliments me all the time… and so on, and so forth.” Then, we would start longing for a guy who is different and, in our eyes, “more perfect,” or ideal, and focus only on

❝ ❝“Another unintended consequence of these

comparisons, is that we may inadvertently make the man we are with feel inadequate, or chip away at his self-confidence over time”

We are also forgetting another important factor: we are not perfect either! We are not ideal in every way, and we have flaws, too. Since, after all, we are human beings. If you focus on the 80% of him that you like and on the places and times when he does make you feel happy and loved, then your happiness and satisfaction and the relationship will actually grow. It is healthier to have the mindset that your dream man is right in front of you! HEALTHY EXPECTATIONS/IDEALS

HIGH UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS/IDEALS • Your man will be ultra-handsome, tall and in perfectly good shape now and throughout his whole life • He will shower you with non-stop romantic gestures, and compliment you all the time

• “Attraction” is important. It is realistic to want to feel attracted to your man, in your eyes, but that is all that matters. If you think he should look like a supermodel though, you are setting yourself up for disappointment because it is expected that men will gain a little weight over the years, and age, etc., just like women typically do, so take that into consideration. • For men, being “romantic” does not come instinctively (unlike how it is portrayed in movies). Also, it is in a man’s nature to tend to put more effort and romance in the beginning of a relationship, and then dwindle over time as he gets comfortable with you (pause for sad sigh). I know, I know, sad, but true. • A healthy ideal to have is that your man be affectionate with you, loving to you, express his appreciation to you, compliments you sometimes and does SOME “romantic gestures” throughout the year.

• He may not do these things daily, or shower you with romance, all the time. It will make you happier if you accept that men are not wired this way to remember to constantly do these things, and notice and appreciate the times that he does do them, rather than focus on him not doing them enough. • Expect your man to “understand” you all the time, completely, and know the perfect thing to say in every moment

• You want a man to be very masculine, yet sensitive

• You expect him to be “Father of the Year” 24/7, and go out of his way to help you around the house, with domestic chores, and your kids all the time, every day

60 | Mother, Baby and Child

• Remember men are MEN. They are “wired” differently than women, and they think, act and communicate differently. Men tend to be simple and express themselves more simply. Do not expect a man to think, act, talk to you and share his feelings with you in the exact same way as you would expect. • You should feel able to communicate with him openly and honestly; he should be honest with you, and should understand you or at least make an effort to understand you about 50-70% of the time. • Yes, a masculine man can be sensitive, and you should expect a fair amount of sensitivity to your emotions and for him to cherish your feelings, but it is unrealistic to expect him to be very masculine, but have the same sensitivity level as a woman, all in the same package. • For the man, he typically occupies the main roles of Leader, Provider and Protector so he is more focused on expending energy on fulfilling those roles well. He wants you to express appreciation and respect for him when he fulfils those roles. • You should expect him to be a present and loving father to your children when he is available, and help you with chores around the house some of the time, but you may keep feeling disappointed if you expect him to work all day, be a good provider and protector, father – and then, on top of that, come home and help you with all the household chores every day.

RELATIONSHIPS happy, appreciative, playful and attractive when you interact with him. That tends to have the positive ripple effect of him feeling happier with YOU – and expressing affection, love and romance more often. So, you will get more of what you want when you focus on the positives, and focus on BEING positive yourself. Would you not rather be happy in your marriage?

Although many expectations are too fantasy-based and unrealistic, the most important ideals for a relationship which are realistic, and that a woman should NOT compromise on, are: having love, friendship, honesty, good communication most of the time (as can be expected from a man – see chart), and respect present in the relationship. On another related note, it is important to know HOW to communicate to a man that you would like him to “do a little more of” something that would help you feel happier and that he is fulfilling more of these ideals for you. Most women make the mistake of complaining, criticising, or nagging their man, to try to get him to change or “do” something. A common example is of a woman complaining to her man: “You never do romantic things for me! I wish you would bring me flowers more!” or “you never compliment me anymore!” When a man is greeted by an angry, disappointed woman who is complaining to him about what he is not doing, it makes him feel defensive and unappreciated – which puts him in the exact opposite mood of wanting to do romantic or nice things for you! It may even distance him further and perpetuate the cycle. Women primarily need love, romance and affection, but men primarily need respect, appreciation and acknowledgement. When men are getting those primary needs met, then they feel the desire to give women more love, romance and affection. So, here is a much more effective technique to communicate with a man and have him respond positively instead

❝❝

“Women primarily need love, romance and affection, but men primarily need respect, appreciation and acknowledgement”

of complaining or criticising him: you give him positive acknowledgement, appreciation and respect first, for the positive things he does, and then tell him what you would love more of. Here is an example of this in action:

“Honey, I know you work so hard to provide for our family and you are a wonderful husband and father. I really thank you for that, but I love it when you XYZ (do romantic things for me sometimes) (are more affectionate with me and tell me I

am beautiful, etc.) more. It makes me feel more connected to you and I love feeling appreciated by you.” When your man DOES do something or tell you something that you like, make sure that you acknowledge him for it and give him positive feedback in the moment! Look him in the eyes, touch him affectionately, and say, “thank you so much for saying/ doing that, that makes me so happy. You are amazing.” That will usually make a man want to do those nice things even more. See, men “train” and improve with positive, not negative, reinforcement. To help you even further with keeping healthy, realistic expectations in your marriage, and not letting unrealistic expectations cause dissatisfaction and hurt it, I have put together a helpful chart which outlines the top expectations that women have of Prince Charming which are too high and unrealistic, coupled with what are healthy and realistic expectations instead. You may want to print this out and hang it up somewhere as a reminder! Mother, Baby and Child | 61

TOP WARDROBE HACKS Our closets do a good job of keeping our secrets well hidden; from last-minute impulse buys at Mall of the Emirates to that sequin skirt we do not even want to talk about, digging into our closet tends to bring out memories and nearly-lost, on-sale shopping moments, all while showcasing what we can wear for the day. That is why, however, our closets can often get too cluttered. Shedd, the new fashion marketplace app in town, gives us the lowdown on a perfectly-organised closet:

1

Hang – flip – shed You like to hang on to a lot of clothes and never know what to give up? Try these three simple steps: hang the hanger in one direction, flip the hanger once worn and shed the remaining items which have not yet been flipped in the past two months.

2

The week’s looks Don’t you enjoy those extra 15 minutes in bed in the morning rather than having

to get up and decide what to wear to work? Then, why not label hangers with the days of the week and plan each outfit accordingly; therefore, you will have your whole week planned?

cards and store them under the labels ‘work’, ‘casual’ and ‘evening’ so you can quickly refer to the cards if you’re having a typical “I have nothing to wear!” day.

6

Know your seasons When we move from winter to summer, bring out those floaty dresses and light cotton pants and store those winter knits. This is a great way to go through your clothes and identify what had been left unworn that season.

7 8

Style hanger Hang tops with the bottoms you wear them with, along with the bag and jewellery to complete the outfit – saving you TONNES of time each morning when deciding what to wear. Divide and conquer Dividing your clothes without even realising it, at the beginning of each month, hang up a divider and everything you wear that month would go on the other side of the divider; it will really show you what you DON’T wear.

9 10

Flip-flop file In a summer all-year-round country, we tend to own two, three, or – in some cases – eight, pairs of flip-flops and beach sandals. Neatly store them and keep them from flying everywhere in their very own file. Sweet-smelling drawers If you have a perfume that you love or one that is almost empty, line your drawers with tissue paper and spray them to make your clothes and towels smell amazing. We live in the city of malls. With over 72 shopping havens in Dubai alone and another eight under construction, Dubai has become one of the world’s most popular shopping destinations. Last year, a total of 56 million people visited the 19th Dubai Shopping Festival and spent about AED 145 billion. Around 50% of all luxury goods sold in Dubai last year came from The Dubai Mall, the ‘world’s most visited destination,’ of which 60% were UAE residents.

FINANCES need this now? When is a better time to get it if not now? • Have a spending budget if you are going on a mall spending spree. Going shopping can be so much fun, especially with friends. You have a bit of lunch, shop, get dessert and shop some more – it is a great afternoon out. • If you are not already in the habit of doing this, then try to start now: Give yourself a limit; this way, you get to enjoy your day out and not go overboard with your purchases. Do not be in the situation where you come home and are fearful of looking at your bank text messages totalling how much you had actually spent. Now the question begs, what are you all buying? And do you really need it? I get it – kids need so many things for school alone, from uniforms to sports kits and accessories. Not to mention, they keep growing out of everything. Then, the summer arrives and, if you are not away for the whole summer, you are going from mall to mall spending money. Life is full of expenses and there are many we cannot avoid, especially when it comes to our kids. Meanwhile, credit/store card debt is increasing, families are not able to save and – worst of all – many couples do not even know how much they actually spend each month. This could lead to devastating financial consequences and commonly results in relationship problems. We have to go back to our grandparents’ advice: “if you cannot afford it, do not buy it.” Going to malls makes it so easy to spend unnecessarily. It is time to curb that spending and become a smart shopper. That does not mean you cannot buy what you want, we

just need to ask a few questions before we make that purchase. Here are a few handy Do’s: • Before you go to the mall, have a list. It is so easy to get distracted at the mall – that is how they are designed – to encourage impulse shopping. Avoid going to the mall for no reason. Just like your grocery list, make a list of what you need. Know which stores you need to go to and come home with only what was on your list. • Before you impulse-buy, ask another question. Do I really need this? Do I really

• Wait for the shopping festival in January or the Summer Surprises for those big purchases. Dubai has some good sales. Get to know when your favourite brands are having their sales over the year and try to schedule shopping trips then. Also, look out for the outlet stores where they have all the brands at discounted prices. Compare prices and get yourself the best deal. • When buying gifts for others, get creative. We all love buying gifts for our loved ones. The look on their face is just priceless. Well, get creative and see what you can make yourself. Sentimental, handmade gifts are among the best ways of showing how much you care. • If it is a birthday party together with other parents, many mums these days do a round-up and get one bigger gift from everyone. This has worked really well as we all know how many birthday parties there are. Get involved and suggest it to your mum friends. These are just a few ways to help you become a smart and savvy spender. Happy shopping! Mother, Baby and Child | 67

The Importance of Knowing Your Plastic UAE residents, shown by financial surveys to be among the Middle East’s biggest spenders, have been recently spending even more. According to a report on consumer spends for 2015 by Network International, a payment solutions provider in the MENA region, domestic spends have increased 13 per cent over 2014, while overall card spends in the UAE grew by 9 per cent over that same year.

FINANCES The report, based on credit and debit card transactions in the UAE, found that spending by UAE-issued cards has remained, by far, the largest in value over the past two years and has remained steady between Dh9 billion and Dh10 billion per month.

UAE Residents Love to Eat and Relax!

UAE residents showed the highest increase in spending in the F&B and hotel sectors. They spent 23 per cent more in restaurants in 2015.

While most UAE residents, particularly those residing in Dubai, may be aware of their increasing spending patterns with a recent Lonely Planet study setting a daily budget of Dh600 as the cost of living for basic needs alone, the majority are completely in the dark when it comes to the interest rates attached to their credit cards. “Credit cards are big business in the UAE, with about 5.9 million debit and credit cards in circulation and spending on plastic rising yearon-year,” says Jon Richards, CEO of the compareit4me.com, a Middle East financial comparison services group. According to a the group’s recent survey, which questioned participants across the UAE on a selection of personal financial products, 63 per cent of credit card holders do not know the interest rate attached to their plastic. “Like any form of debt, credit cards need to be managed responsibly. To discover that nearly two thirds of credit card holders do not know the interest rate attached to them is alarming,” expressed Richards in reference to the survey. Despite popular misconception over the difficulty of accessing financial information, experts insist crucial data is only a phone call or browsing session away. If cardholders are unsure of the rates, or even completely unaware of where they stand, they may contact their banks for assistance. “Understanding the terms and

conditions is vital to your financial health,” adds Richards. In addition to understanding how much they will be charged, card holders should also be aware of their late fees. The best option may be to pay off the balance in full every month and avoid interest altogether, as Rasheda Khatun Khan, financial

planner and author of Millionaire Mindset – 6 Steps to a Wealthy Life, advises. Most cards have about 50+ days interest-free credit. but you should always check your card or bank facility on-site and see if you are getting a good deal. Also, there are often the "extra" fees which seem to pop when we sign up. Always remember to get a numeric example of the rates,” says Khatun Khan.

The best option for cardholders remains to keep track of every single swipe, even with interest rates in mind, to ensure spending never gets out of hand. Otherwise, Richards explains, you may pay the price of losing control over your finances.

The compareit4me survey has also found that 28 per cent of credit cardholders did not know how missing a credit card payment would impact their chances of getting a loan in the future. “With the launch of Al Etihad Credit Bureau, every aspect of your financial history is tracked and can be analysed by banks,” highlights Richards.

“Missing monthly payments or bouncing cheques are some of the things logged on your credit report and can affect your future ability to access finance such as a loan, another credit card or even a mortgage. Again, I urge credit card users to swipe responsibly; excessive monthly payments can quickly become unmanageable.”

Heels and Your Health “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” Marilyn Monroe

CHIC MAMAS Did the 50s icon have a point? She probably did. Little did the star know, plenty of studies in the years to come would support her fashion-conscious claims on the importance of wearing the right footwear. Ah, the beauty of science and the science of beauty. In a 2014 series of studies by Professor Nicolas Guéguen from the University of Southern Brittany in France, High Heels Increase Women’s Attractiveness, it was found that the higher the heel, the more of a contribution it made to how attractive a woman looked, hence increasing confidence. Confidence is one thing, however, and health is another. The higher the heels become (some higher, modern shoe styles do not even have a heel), the more doctors urge women to look out for problems they may cause, but how much harm can a little boost really do? “The human body was originally designed to move without any shoes on. Our ancestors not only walked barefoot, but they walked everywhere. Shoes were only introduced to provide protection to the bottom surface of the foot,” says Dr Stan Pierce, chiropractor at Atlas Spinal Center Dubai. The use of high heels originated around 3,500 BC; they were worn by the royalty looking to differentiate itself as being higher, literally, than the commoners. “In raising the heel of the base of a person’s body frame, the body must reset its centre of gravity so as to not fall forward. Commonly, the pelvis will be forced into a forward tilt and the lower back will be forced into an overlyaccentuated curve. This puts additional stress onto the its spinal joints and creates an abnormal stretch of the hip and low back muscles on the front of the spine,” explains Dr Pierce. Imagine standing on the downhill slope of a mountain and the amount of stress that is placed on the lower back to compensate for the weight imbalance. This imbalance also causes abnormal tension in the muscles of the leg. Many women like the “toned” look that their overly-tense leg muscles reflect. However, this ongoing tension

Give your feet room to breathe. When wearing heels more than 1-2 inches high, your feet tend to be pushed forward into your shoes. If you are uncertain about your correct size, make time and exert some effort into getting the exact measurement. If you still feel squeezed in, choose one size bigger than you would normally wear to avoid cramping your feet.

can create long-term damage to the lower leg’s blood vessels and lymphatic drainage. Additionally, the mechanics of the heel and arch of the foot are dramatically altered, creating the potential for developing foot and ankle arthritis, fasciitis, heel spurs and pain, as well as exposure to an increased vulnerability of spraining the ankle. Does this mean ditching those brand new stilettos or going a bit lower? There are no studies which designate an exact “safe height” for heels, but according to doctors, the higher the heel, the more damage to the body. According to Dr Sameera Al Obaidli, lead physician at Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Centre, a heel below two inches affects the body the least: “Wear heels on days with limited standing and walking; you can also add soft leather insoles to relieve pressure on the knees. Stretch before and after wearing them and make sure you choose appropriate footwear with a sensible heel height and a comfortable toe box.” The human body can adapt to the temporary imbalance of wearing heels for an evening or a special event, every once in a while. It is the ongoing, daily use of higher heels that creates the damaging effects. Hence, it is time to re-consider a dressy pair of flats for those need-for-chic moments. Dr Pierce recommends: “wearing flats is definitely a safer option. Some people have abnormally high arches and may require the use of an arch support, even inside their flats, in order to have good foot mechanics. However, the use of flatter shoes lowers the risk of health problems when it comes to the legs and spine.”

hey say the simplest of answers is, most often, the right one. Minimalism is an art, best understood by great minds who have adopted it religiously in belief of its value as a lifestyle. While Dubai’s appeal may lie in over-the-top creations and limitless luxury, Armani Spa – located within Armani Hotel – exudes effortlessness with an air of exclusivity from its Burj Khalifa address. Armani Spa is not a world of its own – its beige-and-black interiors perfectly camouflage it within the hotel, assuring visitors with a seamless experience in continuation of its philosophy and service standards. Following a warm welcome from the entire spa team, the Spa Manager briefed me on the ritual to come. Armani Spa does not like to present you with a menu, as they prefer a highly-personalised experience, customised to fit your needs, as the knowledgeable manager had so carefully explained. This eliminates germs and odours at the same time •  For a more efficient and effective effort, clean from top to bottom, rather than the opposite. Cabinets come first, followed by counters, handles and tables, with floors being the last to clean so you can ensure you get anything you drop •  Did you spill blueberry jam on the

carpet? Woman’s Day warns us, avoid the natural reaction to rub at a stain. In addition to making the stain go deeper, rubbing actually untwists the fibres of the carpet. So, even if you remove the stain, the unravelled carpet would still look quite odd. •  The best thing to do is to scoop up what you can with a spoon, then keep blotting the spot with a wet paper towel. Leave to dry, then treat the stain with carpet stain remover. Test your cleaner in an unseen area first just for safety •  Stove-top grills are a fiesta for germs. The Food Network recommends sealing them in a Ziploc bag with ¼ cup of ammonia overnight. Scrub them the next morning •  How clean is your cutting board? Think for a second about what you cut on it: cheese, bread, veggies, chicken? Make sure it is clean by rubbing salt with a half-lemon all over the board. This gets inside the nooks and crannies •  Microwave ovens need more than

just wiping down. Put ¾ cup of water and three tablespoons of lemon juice inside, run until the substance boils, then turn off the oven and let it sit. Open the door after ten minutes and wipe down the grime left behind •  Always use lemon juice and white vinegar as substitutes for chemicalbased cleaners for all of your cleaning. Chemicals can ruin the natural shine of counters and floors •  Kitchen sponges are the dirtiest items in the house. Do you regularly clean them? The best way to rid your sponges of unwanted bacteria is to microwave them for two minutes on High. It is fast and easy, but remember they are hot when you remove them. You can also run them through the dishwasher or soak them for five minutes in either bleach or white vinegar. How did you do on our list? Chances are you keep a clean, safe and healthy kitchen already, but now you know enough to pass even the board of health’s most rigorous of tests.

FOR YOU

SAY GOODBYE TO STAINS FIVE TIPS FOR THE FAMILY HOME FROM KĂ„RCHER HOME & GARDEN

As anyone with young children will tell you, marks and stains are inevitable when there are little ones around, gleefully discovering the world in their toy cars or reaching for the colouring pens and paints. Mums and Dads are used to finding chewing gum on the carpet, stickers on the furniture and works of art on the wallpaper. The following cleaning tips will make removing stains and other drawing marks child’s play.

TIP 1

Children love to let their creativity run wild. Once the colouring pencils are out, the walls are no longer safe from budding young Picassos. Parents can remove the works of art without much effort using a wall eraser. Its special fibres rub the surface and erase the colours. And it is not just walls that they can clean, the black marks left on floors by the plastic wheels of toy cars can also be removed using the eraser. For larger marks, it is best to use a steam cleaner. This will also remove the remaining dirt on the floor.

TIP 2

94 | Mother, Baby and Child

There are some things that parents become accustomed to; chewing gum on the carpet or on clothing is one of the lessappealing prospects, but it can be removed quickly by applying something cold. If the tenacious mass lands on the carpet, put some ice cubes into a sealable freezer bag and place on the chewing gum. When it has become frozen and brittle, break it up into individual pieces using a blunt knife and remove. Stubborn residue left in the fibres can be removed using a finetoothed comb. Likewise, put trousers and jumpers straight into the freezer, then separate the chewing gum out.

TIP 3

With children in the house, glass surfaces have to be cleaned more often. Small children frequently leave handprints and fingerprints on the glass panes of terrace or balcony doors. Unsightly streaks and marks can be removed every so often from the glass doors using a window vac, without much effort or preparation. Simply spray on the detergent, remove the dirt using the microfiber cloth and suction the moisture with the window vac. Buckets and squeegees can be left in the cleaning cupboard.

TIP 4

Children love stickers, and love to stick them all over the house. If they remain on surfaces for a long time, it may become difficult or even impossible to remove them by hand. When it comes to removing stickers, there are various household agents to choose from, in this order: heat, water, cooking oil and alcohol. Every method should be tested in advance on a hidden patch to make sure that the material is not discoloured or damaged. Start with a hairdryer. If a sticker does not come off by heating, try using hot water and a sponge. If the sticker still does not come off, a few drops of light cooking oil and a cotton cloth can help. White alcohol should only be used only as a last resort, as it can attach to surfaces.

TIP 5

The glitter fairy has been out and about during arts and crafts, leaving glitter not only on pictures, but all over the room. If you do not manage to remove the stubborn particles in the first round of vacuuming, try using packing tape. Wrap the tape around the palm of your hand, with the sticky side facing outwards, and move over the affected areas. If you have a lint roller at home, use this. Now that the carpet is clean, nothing stands in the way of the glitter fairy’s next visit! 96 | Mother, Baby and Child

FOR YOU

YOU SHOULD HAVE A CHEESEBURGER! Has the PlusSize Trend Created a Skinny Shaming Problem? Weight-related bullying is not a new phenomenon. While most of it tends to start during the early years in a woman’s life as she approaches adulthood, specifically during adolescence, it very often goes back to her early childhood.

100 | Mother, Baby and Child

BODY & SOUL In a recent survey conducted by women’s views portal SheByShe, this type of bullying was found to be widespread and devastating, with over 52 per cent of participants saying they were victims of weight-related bullying at least once in their lives. Most of the bullying was related to being overweight, but nearly 25 per cent said incidents took place because they were underweight. “Skinny shaming can be used for bullying or to put someone down, but it is not used often. However, all forms of bullying and emotional abuse, if severe and repeated, can lead to forms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, depression and generalised anxiety disorders if the skinny shaming victim has the vulnerability factors necessary to develop such disorders,” says Dr Carine El Khazen, clinical psychologist at the American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology. Often exasperated by media attempts to encourage what is believed to be a healthy body image and promote self-acceptance, skinny shaming has begun to spread on social media platforms, in addition to real-life situations, in a similar manner to fat shaming. “Do not hurt yourself.” “Real women have curves.” These and many more were among the many phrases heard in the gym by women, a 2015 study by Shape magazine has revealed. Such phrases make it more difficult for thinner women to accept their bodies just the way they are, but the problem becomes bigger when the emphasis on plus-size ideals increases. Plus-size models, including the worldfamous Ashley Graham and Australia’s Chelsea Bonner, have been making the covers of some of the biggest magazines, often leaving the world debating over the actual health status of these women. Nevertheless, this new “preferred” body type is often promoted as actively Mother, Baby and Child | 101

FOR YOU as skinny was claimed to “feel better than anything would ever taste” in the past. Meanwhile, high-profile cases of fat shaming, starring famous fashion brands including Abercrombie & Fitch as well as Chanel’s Karl Lagerfield, have been causing quite a stir. “What I do not understand is why fat shaming gets so much more bad press than skinny shaming,” says Dubai resident A.L, who claims she has long been accused of looking too slim despite being healthy. On the other hand, many claim skinny shaming is simply not the other side of the coin. “We are ridiculed, discriminated against and rejected; how is that the same as looking too thin?” says mother-of-three Jenna Ronson, who feels that a trip to the food aisle at the nearest Carrefour would evoke suicidal thoughts if one is perceived to be overweight. “In the past few decades, the fear of gaining weight and undue influence of body weight and shape on the selfesteem of females in their early to midthirties has been a major concern,” says Dr Farida M. Nasr, psychiatry specialist at Jefferson Regional Medical Centre, USA. “Some have become so obsessed with their body weight that they became anorexic. In my practice, these ladies have poor self-image, feel rejected and are teased by their peers; some have even contemplated suicide,” she adds. So will skinny shaming be brought forward as a real weight-related bullying matter which should be widely debated? Experts claim it will not be the case anytime soon: “In Western countries, fat shaming still remains rather prevalent, a lot more so than skinny shaming, and we all know the effect of media in that part of the world on global trends,” adds Dr Nasr. With no doubts over the importance of bringing the issue of skinny shaming to the world’s attention, it seems as though it still ranks lower on the 102 | Mother, Baby and Child

weight-related bullying scale, not because it is any less of a problem, but only due to how long fat shaming has been perpetuated and how difficult losing weight remains to be for the majority of people.

problems,” highlights Maria Abi Hanna, dietician at Right Bite Nutrition Centre. “Nonetheless, it is always important to maintain healthy eating habits and remain physically active.”

“It is possible to be slightly over/ underweight and still be healthy, provided that the weight is relatively stable. There should also be no disease-related health risks linked to a high or low weight such as nutrition deficiencies, osteoporosis or respiratory problems, diabetes, blood pressure and cardiovascular

Whether it be skinny or fat shaming, there seems to be no lack of awareness over how real body shaming is. As an approach in itself, standing against weight-related attacks in general may offer the much-needed balance in tackling both skinny, and fat, shaming and putting an end to painful experiences for women.

The cARTel is also designed in such a way that architecture is incorporated with the art and fashion which appear in the boutique. cARTel is not only a place, but rather, each piece is designed distinctively and presented in a unique and style which differentiates from the rest of the shops or boutiques. y yHow has being a mother influenced your view of art and fashion?

For me, the most beautiful role is that of a mother. We are all aware of the fact that women have many roles in this life, we wear more than one hat every single day, from a successful woman in business, to a housewife and a mother to wonderful children. Just in the way that an architect stands for large-scale projects and other roles and positions, this perfectly highlights the extent of the power of women and the importance of their presence. Being a mother has taught me patience, endurance, the ability to understand people around me and has also motivated me at the same. This is what drove me to work more and learn to give more. Just in the way that our children are inspired by us and we are the source of their strength, being their Mums and Dads, we also draw strength and inspiration from them; they are the light that illuminates our lives, and the source of our happiness. POST-PARTUM PAIN Pregnancy and the Lower Back

yy By: Dr Stan Pierce Chiropractor, AIG Clinics Dubai

The beauty of childbirth and excitement of having a new baby can often be overshadowed by the physical difficulties which birth and post-partum changes may bring to a new mother’s lifestyle.

116 | Mother, Baby and Child

MOTHER During the last trimester of pregnancy, the body releases a hormone called relaxin to begin loosening the pelvic ligaments in preparation for the baby to descend into the pelvis and eventually through and out of the birth canal. Following birth, the mother’s body ceases the production of relaxin and begins the process of restoring lumbar and pelvic support by tightening muscles until the ligaments can re-stabilise. Also following childbirth, physical demands on the mother increase with the carrying of the baby, baby’s car seat, the diaper bag, stagnant breastfeeding positions, bending over changing diapers, bathing the baby, changing clothes and much more. Combine these with the sleep deprivation, hormonal changes and nutritional deficiencies associated with pregnancy, and you can see some of the more well-known complications of being a mother. However, there is a lesser known, but extremely common condition, which is affecting almost every pregnancy, delivery and postpartum recovery. Many, if not all, women have a nerve condition which is causing their spines, pelvises and birth canals to twist and torque. As the weight of a developing baby begins a forward pull on the mother’s lower back, her twisted spine grows weaker and weaker, especially as the baby’s weight continues to increase. When the relaxin hormone weakens the ligaments, the back and pelvis will twist further, complicating the pregnancy even more. Once the pelvis begins expanding in preparation for birth, the twisted pelvis with weakened ligaments creates for a torqued birth canal.

Mother, Baby and Child | 117

DOCTOR’S VISIT

“This nerve interference begins causing the muscles on one side of the lower back and pelvis to tighten, and as one side tightens, it begins twisting the spine and pelvis”

This same nerve condition can also disrupt the maximum contraction ability of the birthing muscles, and combined with the twisted birth canal, creates for a much more difficult delivery. This nerve condition initially begins from spinal vertebra which have become misaligned and, instead of protecting the spinal cord and nerves like they are meant to do, they begin to interfere with the nerves. As all muscles of the body are controlled by the nerves, this nerve interference begins causing the muscles on one side of the lower back and pelvis to tighten, and as one side tightens, it begins twisting the spine and pelvis. 118 | Mother, Baby and Child

This kind of twisting is incredibly common and can lead to back and leg pain, in addition to birthing complications. After the baby is born, relaxin hormone release ceases and the mother’s body begins the process of tightening and stabilising; however, tightening muscles around a twisted spine and pelvis can lead to ongoing back issues and difficulties. Although this kind of misalignment condition is extremely common, most doctors are not trained to locate and correct these spinal misalignments. Therefore, most mothers are left trying to treat the symptoms of pain and spasms with little to no success because nobody is finding and correcting the actual

cause of their problem. As it becomes more difficult for the mother to find comfortable sleeping, breastfeeding and sitting positions and she has a more difficult time standing and holding her baby, the frustration of these physical struggles begins to compete with the joys of having a child. While there are several possible ways to address a nerve condition, the Evolutionary Percussive Instrument Corrections (EPIC) spinal procedure is a gentle, painless, non-surgical solution. The aim of this procedure is to untwist the pelvis and create a healthy environment for a wonderful pregnancy, successful birth and beautiful start to motherhood.

DETECTING CHILDHOOD HEARING LOSS

without the “HUH’s” When a national health survey revealed that almost five out of 1000 babies suffered hearing loss, not many clutched their pearls over the statistic. However, the issue has undergone an increase in perceived seriousness after a 2013 research carried out by CDC (Center for Disease Control) estimated that at least 12.5 percent of children and adolescents ages six to 19 have suffered permanent damage to their hearing due to excessive noise exposure. yy By: Hiba Naz

120 | Mother, Baby and Child

CHILD

Mother, Baby and Child | 121

DOCTOR’S VISIT The causes of childhood hearing loss may range from the noise levels of the baby’s environment to birth defects and substance abuse by the mother. Mothers need to be extra careful and avoid intake of harmful substances - especially medications like ototoxic medicines and various antibiotics that have a detrimental impact on the fetus’s auditory nerve. The child can also have a genetic predisposition to developing hearing problems. Therefore, it is important for parents to be vigilante and keep a close watch on the baby’s development to detect any anomalies and have them treated as early as possible. Head traumas or exposing the child to second-hand smoke can also lead to the child acquiring hearing loss. A child can also suffer from a transient hearing loss, which occurs as a result of an infection in the child’s middle ear called ‘Otitis Media’. The infection is said to afflict almost 75% of children with at least one episode by the time they are three years old. Hearing problems that can go undiagnosed can inhibit the child’s development and emotional growth. The American Speech Hearing Language Association (ASHA) have created speech and hearing milestones to help screen their child for any sort of hearing problems that can be every parents cheat sheet to help them aid their child for a healthy growth. It is important to detect the problem earlier on and according to the cause of the hearing loss, clinicians can advise on the best treatment to help the child with his or her hearing. Hearing aids, cochlear implants and a combination of speech therapy along with assistive listening devices are all treatment methods with excellent success rates that can truly help the child live a normal life. As precaution is better than cure, parents should take the infant for regular check-ups – the tests are painless and non-invasive, hence it is ideal to make sure that the child is completely fit and in the pink of his or her health. 122 | Mother, Baby and Child

yyWhen should I start brushing my child’s teeth?

You should start brushing your child’s teeth when the first baby tooth erupts (grows in the mouth). yyWhat’s the right way to brush my child’s teeth?

The best way to brush your child’s teeth is in a circular motion with a soft toothbrush of age-appropriate size. All surfaces of all teeth should be brushed to help dislodge food and reduce bacteria plaque levels.

yyHow much toothpaste should my child use? Should I use a fluoride toothpaste?

Fluoride in the right amount is safe and effective in preventing and controlling tooth decay and fluoride toothpaste is recommended twice daily. A smear amount of fluoride toothpaste should be used for children under age 3, while children 3-8 years old should use a pea-sized amount. yyWhen can my child start brushing on their own?

Your child can start brushing their own teeth when they can hold a brush well. However, this does not mean that they will brush well and there is no specific age when a child will do this. Supervision and assistance are needed for all children. yyWhat can I do if my child refuses to brush their teeth?

Many young children will give parents a hard time with brushing, but it is important to persevere through the process because a healthy mouth is much better than the consequences of tooth decay and gum disease. While visiting your paediatric dentist, they can demonstrate how this can be done to make the process quicker while still being efficient. 128 | Mother, Baby and Child

Five Things You Should Know about Fluoride and Your Child’s Teeth. yyWhat is fluoride?

Fluoride is a compound that contains the natural element known as fluorine. Routinely using small amounts of fluoride can help prevent tooth decay. Studies have shown that in places with community water fluoridation, decay rates have reduced by over 50 per cent and children grow up with fewer cavities. Where fluoride is not available

in the community water, the use of toothpaste, mouth rinses and professionally-applied gels and varnishes containing fluoride as the active ingredient is highly recommended to help reduce tooth decay. yyHow does fluoride prevent cavities?

When sugar is broken down, it forms an acid which attacks and weakens the tooth enamel by causing a loss of minerals and creating cavities. Fluoride helps prevent this loss

CHILD

of minerals and encourages the strengthening of the enamel in areas where cavities are just beginning to develop. It also affects the bacteria which helps in causing acid attacks on teeth. When the use of fluoride is combined with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene, the risk for decay is reduced even further. yyIs fluoride safe?

There is confirmation from clinical studies that fluoride use in the right quantities for the prevention

and control of tooth decay is both safe and highly effective. However, products containing fluoride should be stored out of the reach of young children. yyWhat happens if my child swallows fluoridated toothpaste while brushing?

To avoid ingesting excessive amounts of fluoride, always monitor children to make sure they are using the correct amount of fluoride toothpaste for their age. This should be a smear

amount for children less than three years of age and a pea-size amount for children aged 3-8, twice daily. yyMy child’s dentist suggested fluoride varnish? What is it for?

Topical fluoride is applied by a dental professional to prevent tooth decay. It comes in the form of gels, foams and varnish. Gels or foams are placed in trays and held against the teeth for up to four minutes while fluoride varnish is “painted” on teeth. Mother, Baby and Child | 129

• Once the chocolate is tempered, pour it in half-sphere polycarbonate moulds, fill the cavity completely, then tap the mould a few times on sides and on the bottom to release any air bubbles trapped in chocolate • Flip the mould back over the bowl with chocolate and let it drain out; again, tap with spatula on the sides to remove more to obtain thin shell

• Leave the mould on a wire rack upside down until the chocolate starts to set, trim and clean any excess and leave the mould for 6-12 hours to crystallise • Repeat process until all the moulds are used or you have enough chocolate spheres for service 132 | Mother, Baby and Child

PICNIC MAGIC...

Three recipes for the ultimate beach picnic basket from Hello Chef!’ Founder Olivia Manner

We are heading towards that toasty summer period again so it is a great time to head to the beach while the weather is still enjoyable. While the Dubai beachside is great, snacks or lunch options around the beaches are not always that reasonable…it is often either fast food or overpriced tourist meals. So, I thought I would share with you a few awesome recipes that make for a great beach lunch picnic.

‘NICOISE’ RICE SALAD In a large salad bowl, mix cooked rice, tomato chunks, steamed green beans, sliced surimi (crab) sticks, boiled eggs and black olives. For the dressing, mix a teaspoon of Dijon mustard with the juice of half a lemon and a large tablespoon of olive oil. Season the salad with salt and black pepper.

FRESH SPINACH QUINOA AND AND CHEESE WATERMELON SALAD BAGUETTE Cut slices of yellow and red peppers and place them in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 degrees. Mix baby spinach leaves in a salad bowl with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Cut the baguette open length-wise, leaving one side still attached. Fill the baguette with baby spinach leaves, the roasted peppers and slices of your favourite cheese (I would choose a nice Emmental…). Cut the baguette in smaller pieces and wrap tightly in foil. Yum!

Cook the quinoa as per package instructions. Cut the melon in small chunks, the feta in cubes and wash and chop the mint leaves. Let the quinoa cool down and prepare the dressing. Squeeze the juice of 2-3 lemons. Mix honey and plenty of paprika powder into the lemon juice. Pour the juices in the quinoa and mix well. Finally, mix in the watermelon, feta cheese, mint leaves and some dried raisins/ sultanas.

DELIGHT CLEANSE Every beginning is difficult, and this is never more the case than when it comes to the topic of “dieting” and “cleansing”. We have plenty of good intentions of doing it well and right, but how many times do we fail when weíve only just come out of the blocks? Try a 3-day mini cleanse instead of a 7-day or 12-day program. Because even small steps in the right direction can make a big difference

Here are the top 3 benefits of a 3-day Juice Cleanse: 1. Less bloating 2. A great immune boost 3. Breaks the unhealthy cycle

CHILDREN’S NUTRITION DONE RIGHT

yy By: Pi.Dubai Restaurant Founders Amber Haque and Rami Badawi 138 | Mother, Baby and Child

TIPS

A

ny mother can tell you that one of the greatest challenges is feeding your children. When it comes to children’s nutrition, we all want to get it right. Sadly, that is not always the easiest task given that they can be the pickiest of eaters, with a natural tendency to go for fast, processed food. Visiting PI.Dubai, Mother, Baby & Child tasted the most bizarre and delicious of creations, including a kale Jell-O in the greenest of hues and a pizza made with imported ingredients to ensure freshness, quality and taste. All food on the kids’ menu is served with their preferences, and well-being, in mind – it is even all served at the exact right temperature! For some tips on nutritious, yet fun, eating, PI.Dubai has four important rules to live by: Your child can still enjoy the flavours they love in an allnatural way

Many of the flavours children enjoy can be created in a completely natural, additive and preservativefree way. Most commercial chicken

nuggets, for example, are usually made from different ground-up parts of the chicken and contain lots of added starches and salt. Instead, try making an ItalianAmerican classic, chicken parmigiana, using organic chicken breast, homemade breadcrumbs with fresh herbs, homemade tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese. Cut up the chicken parmigiana into bitesize portions before cooking to give the feel of a classic chicken nugget. The chicken can be either lightly pan sautéed in olive oil or even baked.

There are natural alternatives to sugar

Even typically sugary drinks can be made free of sugar without your child noticing the difference. For example, we like to mix fresh pomegranate juice in our homemade lemonade to create an all-natural pink lemonade. Instead of sugar, try sweetening the lemonade with a little bit of honey. Between the natural sweetness of the pomegranate and the honey, your pink lemonade will compete with any store-bought product.

Natural ingredients can be used instead of food colouring There is almost no reason to use artificial food colouring when so many fruit and vegetables contain natural colour. For example, we make homemade green apple and kale jelly. Instead of green food colouring, puree a little green kale with the apples to give your jelly a beautiful fluorescent green colour that kids will love. It is not that difficult to make your own dough!

Making dough for pizza, bread or even pasta is not that difficult. Store-bought bread is often made with a lot of additives, including sugar. Store-bought bread is also usually rapid-proofed with a lot of yeast, depriving the dough of the natural enzymes and probiotic bacteria that form when dough is fermented for long periods of time. The rapid proofing of bread is now one of the leading reasons it is being studied for the increase in gluten sensitivity and intolerance. If you are seeking more inspiration, you can always visit PI.Dubai at The Dubai Mall. Mother, Baby and Child | 139

ESSENTIALLY RAW

Should You Try the Raw Diet? Diet and nutrition trends are always giving the world something to talk about. From singing sensation Mariah Carey’s pink-coloured food choices to Beyoncé’s obsession with liquid-only consumption, every craze is claimed to have scientific evidence, or pure resultsbased logic, in its support.

Recent studies have credited going raw for a few days, weeks, months or longer for positive shifts in health and well-being. Many experts believe that raw, plant-based food is part of the ‘medicine of the future’, as evidence has increasingly suggested that raw food improves digestion, helps with weight management, increases energy levels and reduces or eliminates many unwanted symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and even the development of chronic diseases.

140 | Mother, Baby and Child

“The idea is that heating food destroys its nutrients and natural enzymes, which is bad because enzymes boost digestion and fight chronic disease. In short: when you cook it, you kill it,” says Dietician and US Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Member Maryann Tomovich Jacobsen.

raw foods along with cold-pressed juices for maximum nourishment. A small volume of cooked foods, such as quinoa and chickpeas, are also incorporated to provide you with an extra boost of protein. You receive the delivery of a day’s worth of food and juices each morning.

DAY 1:

Being a big fan of chia, it was a welcome addition to breakfast in the Warrior Chia Pudding, which also incorporates pomegranates for sourness and a highlynutritious trail mix. The Apple Lemonade was a life-saver for a strong flu, and dinner’s Onion Bread accompaniment to the Falafel Mushroom Burger was a delight.

DAY 2:

A pre-brekkie 250ml of pure green juice? Why not! The greens provided for a soothing introduction to the airy Scones with Cashew Cream Cheese breakfast and nourishing Essential Salad lunch with more organic greens, curly kale, and starsuperfood quinoa.

DAY 3:

The ‘Tuna’ Salad’s sprouted sunflower seeds were a bit too heavy, not recommended for easily-upset stomachs. The Pineapple Powwow juice, however, was just the perfect amount of sweet. Dinner consisted of a Lemon Sage Cream ‘Pasta’, which uses zucchini spirals instead of the traditional carb-loaded version, with a delicious Raw Brownie with sea salt to follow. DAY 4:

The Chia Lassi Smoothie did not impress, mainly because for a mango lover it is more on the bland side (must.have.sugar), but the Essentially Bar later down the line had enough coconut and dates to make up for it. Dinner’s yet another ‘pasta’ variety with ‘neat balls’ made of ingredients like pine-nut ‘parmesan’ and Nama Shoyu (a type of soy sauce) was a winner.

DAY 5:

The Coco Yogo Yogurt Cups were so soft and creamy, we could devour them all day, but that was just breakfast. The cherryon-top, after a Sesame ‘Noodle’, carrot and celery noodle of course, salad, was the

Chocolate Cheesecake; never say no to cacao and pecans. What the doctors say: The raw diet has plenty of nutritional perks, and you may lose weight of you follow it religiously. Keep note, however, of any nutrition you may be missing out on (and consult a doctor to compensate) and the digestive benefits of some cooked food. What we say: For committed individuals, this is gold! You will lose unwanted weight, clean up your system and have fun in the process. Raw food makes you feel like a million bucks, with health-focused ingredients that nourish on the inside. Some swaps are pure genius, like the zucchini spirals, and will make you re-think cooking and food. The inclusion of fun desserts makes it balanced; no need for the bad guys which pack on unwanted sugar.

142 | Mother, Baby and Child

Our bodies are not accustomed to some raw foods (our fault), so some ingredients might require some getting used to. If you are a relentless carnivore, you may just miss meat a bit too much. Is five days really that long? Cacao is the healthiest sweet craving, hence its popularity in the raw world, but this only works if you are a big fan.

THE FUTURE OF “PLAY”

UAE Venues Which Redefine Edutainment Play is widely recognised as an essential component of a child’s development which contributes to their cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being. According to the Canadian Council on Learning’s Early Childhood Learning Knowledge Centre, since the early years of a child’s development set the basis for learning, behaviour and health that last a lifetime, it is important to allow a child the freedom to play and be engaged in activities which maximise their development potential.

FAMILY TIME

Recent studies have highlighted the positive trend of children in the UAE spending more time playing – with most of this play time expended in physical activities. However, experts note that there is still room for improvement when it comes to encouraging creative pastimes among children. Instead of relying on structured programs and learning, specialists suggest that engaging in problem-solving and roleplaying activities can go a long way in optimising a child’s creative potential. We take a look at existing, and nearfuture, venues in the UAE which adopt such activities and structures, so children can have fun, and learn something too.

Mattel Play! Town

Mattel Play! Town will leverage the ‘eduplay’ concept – a play-based education model which highlights the importance of stimulating children’s imagination and love for fantasy to facilitate the development of social skills. The hub is set to captivate children’s senses and allow them to step into the world of their favourite animation characters.

Across five themed play zones, children can join Barney , Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina and Fireman Sam in a variety of activities which have been carefully designed to enhance communication, self-sufficiency and adaptive skills. In addition, children will also learn about interdependence, team building and problem-solving. Each play zone has been tailored to fit different age groups and provide diverse eduplay benefits. For instance, toddlers and pre-schoolers will learn that sharing is caring and develop social skills with Barney, while Bob the Builder will help

children hone their problem-solving skills and ability to work as a team by building their way through challenges with the Can-Do Crew. In addition, an on-site café serving healthy and nutritious meals and snacks will teach children the importance of wholesome eating habits. Parents can also play alongside their children at Mattel Play! Town and join the excitement of engaging with characters they themselves loved as kids. The new destination is set to open within a few months at CITY WALK in Dubai. Mother, Baby and Child | 157

SNAP AWAY Take the Perfect Family Photo

yy Anke Groenewald

162 | Mother, Baby and Child

When it comes to taking the perfect photo of your family, nobody would know better than those who are doing it almost all day, every day. Forget blurry memories and awkward photoboambs, Picture People’s Operations Manager, Anke Groenewald, gives us her tips from the newest studio in town.

Natural light

Getting your little one/s to pose close to a window around your home makes for beautiful images. The natural light will provide lovely highlights to their features and add a softness to the image. If you want to add shadow to create contrast, slightly close the curtains to achieve a more dramatic effect.

Get creative

Use favourite toys, books or crates to

TIPS

create variety in your photos. Gifts from relatives add a lovely personal touch. Home décor makes for great props and incorporating your little one/s items will make it picture perfect.

Textured blankets and rugs

Adding textured blankets or rugs makes for a wonderful backdrop. Make your little one/s pose on their back or tummy – stand above and snap! Blankets look great when swaddled or loosely placed, each give an extra creative element.

Cheerful vs. asleep

Each parent has a specific idea of what type of image they would like of their little one/s – awake or asleep. If awake, afternap and feeding are ideal times to capture special moments of your little one/s’ cheerfulness, full of smiles and giggles. However, if you are looking for photos where your little one is asleep, photograph at the beginning of nap time. To obtain cute facial expressions when asleep, gently touch the forehead or make soft

sounds. You will notice they will smile or frown.

Any camera will do – it all depends on you

Purchase a camera you feel comfortable with and start with something basic. As you feel more confident, invest in different lenses or upgrade your camera to one which has more functions. Anke recommends researching, reading forums and checking photos taken by various cameras before purchasing. Mother, Baby and Child | 163

FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS DUBAI SOCIAL PET PARK 2016

A pet-friendly emirate, Dubai is a haven for animal lovers. While plenty of communities are tailored to accommodate pet owners’ preferences, up until now, most pet owners could only meet and interact online. However, last month, the world of pets has forever been transformed.

166 | Mother, Baby and Child

Dubai Social Pet Park is a brand new addition to the pet lovers’ community in the UAE. Organiser Diversion Group initiated the event concept in cooperation with the main sponsor, pet nutrition giant Royal Canin, to create an actual pet lovers’ community. A casual outdoor family gathering for networking and bonding held at the Dubai International Marine Club, the event offered a totally unique concept organised “for and by” the community, with 1,112 guests attending the event throughout the day. “Dubai Social Pet Park is not a pet market neither is it a show; the event was designed to gather pet lovers in the UAE to

meet face to face rather than on Facebook,” says Mohamed Aamer, CEO of Diversion Group. The event featured learning experiences aimed at encouraging community members’ involvement with rescue animals and raising awareness against animal abuse; delegates were invited to attend free seminars hosted by many experts such as Nasser Al Falasi, prominent dog trainer and founder of the not-for-profit association Dubai Dogs Society. Seminars addressed topics including animal health, dos & don’ts, training tips and how to maintain a clean neighbourhood and environment while

your four-legged family member enjoyed your company. “The main aim of the event this year was to raise awareness on animal health and introduce the community to the culture of adopting an animal rather than buying one. The event is still new and needs time to be developed further, but we were very positive about the feedback and advice received to enhance the event for years to come,” adds Amer. During the event, not-for-profit association Dubai Senior Dogs’ Project also spoke to delegates about helping and adopting senior dogs in need of a forever home. Additionally, for the very first time in UAE, Guinness World Records participated in the event in search for talented dogs. Event attendees got the chance to win exciting prizes through raffle draws, awards and much more! The event was sponsored and supported by Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort, 3M Filtrate and Cloud 9 Hotel & Care (Abu Dhabi), who organised a Free Adoption Day for a number of dogs and cats.

UZURA KUWAYAKI

Quail with shichimi pepper & herbed braised green capsicum & spring onion We eat with our eyes: This is something I learnt the hard way as I savoured on what I had believed to be a shave of – rather fresh – carrot. It was not a piece of carrot, so my guess was incorrect, and so were the 20 other speculations I had made later to a chuckling restaurant manager. Our brain is in a constant operational state, balancing out our senses and how they are all being utilised. Partially handicapping one sense, however, invigorates the others, making us experience the world around us in ways we had never imagined – including really tasting what we are eating. Ramada Hotel Jumeirah’s Asian restaurant – Ginger – decided to put that 168 | Mother, Baby and Child

to the test. Laying out a full five-course menu for us to try as we were completely blindfolded, it made for an innovative dinner set-up, all in commemoration of Earth Hour. The lights slightly dimmed, we fumbled in search for the cutlery, and laughed at our near-hits and misses, later enjoying the marvellous creations on offer in full view. Worth a try? It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, in the sense that you would probably get to do it only once due to the unlikelihood of its occurrence across the year, and because it is not the way you would want to enjoy your food on a regular basis. It makes you appreciate presentation and food combinations, but if you are a foodie, the frustration might just be a bit too much to handle.
