Figures recently revealed by the UAE’s national statistics centre show that over 12,000 couples filed for divorce during 2011-2013, one of the highest separation rates in the world. PARENTING The scary numbers are an indicator to how big of a percentage of the 89,000 single-parent households in the UAE from Euromonitor International’s 2012 survey results is made up of divorced couples. Being a single mother is not easy. With financial responsibilities and rising costs of living, a mother finds herself having to make much more decisions, many of which will also affect the psychological wellbeing of her children. Holiday season is warm and happy. For singlemother households, it is often difficult to keep it that way. From deciding to where the children will be spending the holidays to making the necessary Santa arrangements, a mother finds herself stuck amid a never-ending balancing act. Here are some tips on how to avoid holiday blues and make this holiday season the most spectacular one yet: ALTERNATING HOLIDAYS
Many couples look at a ‘time share’ sort of arrangement to ensure their children are getting the best of both worlds. Some parents alternate the holidays, others the specific timings when the children would be physically present with one family or the other.
While no child would hate getting double the gifts from Santa, remember that it can be overwhelming for them. Children tend to adjust their behaviour around different relatives and too many changes can take the fun out of this joyful time, so ensure there is not too much back and forth between families – this is where careful planning is key. AN OPEN DISCUSSION
Talking things out, especially in an informal setting whenever possible, can help untangle the most complex of situations. Single mothers’ lives revolve around their children and the mere idea of not having them around can make you feel lonely. It does not have to be this way!
Make sure you spend some quality time with your children doing the things you love before they leave for some holiday time with their father.

RELAX! HOLIDAY STRESS-BUSTERS The holiday season can be stressful for many reasons. For some mummies, something as simple as gift wrapping can be a burden – not because it is a daunting task in itself, but rather because there is so much to do along with it. So, how can you keep stress at bay and enjoy the holidays?

Do not overspend. Easier said than done, but the holidays do not have to be a time when you would need a credit card to survive. A visit to the toy store will make everything seem like a ‘must-have’, but it is best to make sure you limit kids’ requests to Santa to three items each – narrowing it all down for you to things you can find and that fall within your budget.
It seems like you are doing all of the work. Hubby is relaxing a bit more than you would like him to. Even after he cooks, you still have to clean up. How are the holidays supposed to be fun? Bear in mind that men and women have very different expectations of how ‘perfect’ is supposed to look like. For him to be aware of what is important to you, write him a small to-do list which clearly details tasks you would expect him to fulfil. Add a small note in the end with a fun activity you could do together, just the two of you, to make it sweeter. It is the season of joy after all.
Make sure the children are prepared. For family visits, holiday traditions and everything else. Show them photos of family members and tell them their names and a little bit about them. Do NOT kick the kids out of their beds; try to make room for visiting family anywhere else at your home.
Study the ‘etiquette’ of giftgiving for children. It may seem like they like everything, but that is not the case. If your relatives have been thoughtful enough to ask you about what your children would like, give them a list. Define ‘morning’. You will only open the gifts on Christmas morning? What does ‘morning’ mean? Mamas know that, for younger children, morning is more like dawn. Insist that stockings would be opened when everybody is present.
Older children can understand a gift certificate, but kids under ten need something ‘real’ to open on Christmas day. Alternatively, you can take them to pick out their own gifts, but be warned, this can lead to many stressful moments and tugs of war between the ‘sale’ and ‘just in’ isles.
Ask for help when you need it. There is no shame in asking a friend, family member or even professional to help you with cooking, cleaning or otherwise. Do not wait until it is too late, ask for it before you get too stressed out. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | DECEMBER 2016 | 27

EXTENDED FAMILY STRESS
For many mothers, the main source of holiday stress is family responsibilities. Family relationships are complicated as is, but become even more stressful when it is time to visit for the holidays or deal with certain relatives, what has changed and what stayed the same. Mum is making this all about her. You are a mum too now and would like your own traditions, but she is taking over. While you may not want to sound like a cry baby, it does bother you a little.
Tempted to avoid a toxic relative? Whether you are the invitee or host, avoidance will not really do anything for you. A big part of personal growth is learning to deal with people you do not like. A more reasonable solution would be to keep your conversations with them short and sweet or, if you are hosting them, ask them to bring a friend so they will be busy chatting with them.
You may wish you did not have to give so many presents. So many people give them to you, but you do not have enough money to gift back.
The economy has hit everyone hard, it is not just you. You will find that many people are having that exact same problem and the way to solve it is to get creative. Why not create something small, but sentimental – like a keychain with your photo together in it? In this case, it is important to remember that she is living some of her best moments. As a mother gets older, she subconsciously feels like her role has become less important. Do not validate that by undermining her contributions. It is best to respect her input and add to it without hurting her feelings. Try to hint that whatever it is that you would like to do was actually the kids’ idea – every grandmother wants to keep her grandchildren happy.

Remember, not everything has to be perfect. There is a lot of holiday magic to be lost that way. You are only human and it will all turn out to be beyond wonderful in any case. Focus on gratitude. You are spending it with your favourite people; what could be better?

‘HEGURU’ LEARNING Right-brain education comes to the UAE By Sarah Whitehead

Traditional teaching methods tend to engage the more logical left side, while the more creative right side of the brain is largely ignored.
Parents are always on the lookout for new approaches to improve their children’s learning experience, especially for those who struggle to conform to the more traditional teaching methods. Until quite recently, any attempts to modernise and improve upon traditional teaching techniques were seen as eccentric quackery.
A NEW AGE
Now, however, parents and educators are seeing the benefit of tailoring learning to match children’s capabilities rather than forcing them to see the world our way. Realising that children think and learn differently, and that we cannot expect all children to follow the same traditional approach, is the key to developing the more modern, revolutionary teaching techniques. One example of such a technique is ‘Heguru’ learning. According to proponents of Heguru, different methods of learning engage different sides of the brain. Traditional teaching methods tend to engage the more logical left side, while the more creative right side of the brain is largely ignored. Providing an education which focusses only on one side essentially
means that children are not learning to use their whole brain. Heguru promises to develop the right side of your child's brain in as little as 10 minutes per day.
WHAT IS HEGURU?
Established in Japan more than 30 years ago, the Heguru concept utilises right-brain development learning programmes and specialised teaching methodologies. It is aimed at infants and young children so they can develop mentally and maximise the benefits of the skills they learn. The word Heguru comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the acronym HEGL, which stands for the Henmi Educational General Laboratory. It has now become the standard expression for the HEGL method. The training programme inspires a fun, yet focussed learning environment for young children using visual training aids which nurture a photographic memory and speed-learning capabilities. An ideal complement to pre-school education, the Heguru method aims to enrich and enhance a child’s ‘genius potential’. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | DECEMBER 2016 | 43

Scientists have identified two modes of thinking, dependant on which side of the brain is dominant. The right side of the brain is responsible for intuition and creativity, while the left side for logic. People who are right-side dominant are the deep thinkers, artists and writers of the world. Their left-sided counterparts, being more analytical and objective, tend to shine in subjects like maths and science. Children who are right-side dominant can start falling behind as early as pre-school because of the teaching methodologies applied, while parents may not even be aware of it. Though students use most parts of their brain in the learning process, and none are strictly ‘right or left-side’ only, most are dominant in one node – so not every teaching style completely fits their learning capabilities. Neuroscience also tells us that what we learn in our formative years will last a lifetime, so nurturing a child’s ability to use both sides of their brain will provide a wealth of advantages lasting throughout their educational journey and into adulthood.
BEYOND ACADEMICS
While a useful learning tool, Heguru does not just focus on academic achievement. The goal is to instil in your child an independent, creative and productive mindset, ensuring that they
excel in all aspects of life. For academic, artistic, sporting, professional or even personal goals, Heguru is designed to give your child the tools they need to succeed. These learning techniques are relatively new in Dubai, but they have been used in other parts of the world for quite some time. How to Communicate with Your
CHILD’S TEACHERS
Teachers are responsible for most our children’s time at school. A teacher’s impact on your child’s development is immeasurable, hence the importance of a strong and open communication between you and them.

EDUCATION Many mothers struggle to communicate with their child’s teachers. They often forget that they are educators and that, at the end of the day, they only want what is best for every child they teach. What can you, as a parent, do to make communicating with your children’s teachers easier and understand their point of view should any conflict occur?
• Help them get to know your child better. Provide information on important things which may not be listed on school application forms such as moderate behavioural issues (a tendency to get distracted, for instance), learning difficulties or changes in family life.
• Always assume positive intent. Even when you are not on the same page, or if any of you is struggling to understand the other, believe that they only want the best for your child. • Be their partner. Most parents approach their children’s teachers defensively and that should never be the case. Even if communication starts after your child gets into trouble, try to keep the relationship as positive as you can. • Do not wait until a problem arises to get in touch. By then, the problem is usually too complex. Initiate contact with them and be proactive, the easiest way to do that is through parent-teacher or school events. • Your child may interact with their teacher on a daily basis, but may not be able to fully grasp what is expected of them. Make sure the teacher communicates to you what is important to them, especially when it comes to homework.
• Tell them about your goals. What do you want for your child? Is your focus on learning, grades or extra-curricular? What is important to you as their parent?
• Acknowledge how difficult the teacher’s job may be at times. It is a lot harder than most people know; if you are having trouble dealing with your child or, for example, their ADHD – just imagine what it is like to have a classroom full of children. • Show gratitude. Do not wait until that ‘happy holidays’ card or the end of the year to let the teacher know how much you appreciate their efforts in helping your child. • Ask your child’s teacher about their preferred contact method. Familiarise yourself with school policies and important events, and let the teacher know that you would like to stay informed. • In e-mail communication, keep it as brief as possible. Maintain a professional tone and keep your message about school matters. Also, be very diplomatic and avoid criticising them. • Offer solutions to help your child’s teacher. Rather than leaving it all to them, be proactive and give them ways through which you can help with your child’s learning and development. • Assure the teacher that they can come to you for help, but make sure they understand that this is no quick fix. They still have a huge role to play and, rest assured, they are qualified enough to handle anything that comes their way.

Children can learn and develop from moving to a new destination

Relocating to a different country can be stressful for families with young children. Many expatriate parents are concerned about supporting their child’s learning and development during an international relocation. However, it may not be as challenging as you might think. Development occurs over a relatively long period of time and is associated with qualitative changes in your child. That is, what your child cannot do today, they may be able to achieve later. First, with assistance from an adult or capable friend, and later they will be able to complete the skill or activity all by themselves. Learning leads a child’s development; therefore, the richer the child’s experience the greater their understanding. As parents, teachers and siblings of young expatriate children, we need to consider learning and development that occur not only in educational institutions, but also during the course of a child’s everyday life. This includes what and how a child may learn and develop during an international move out of Dubai, for example.

Together, parents, teachers and older siblings can support young children’s learning and development while families begin to pack and move out. Research indicates that priming events directed towards the child’s level of understanding are important. Such events are practical ways which may assist children in talking, thinking about and understanding the experience of moving out of a country. It is valuable to include priming events into conversations for all ages before, during and after a move so that children know what to expect and can begin to process events in their own way. Priming events may support a child’s learning and development. Priming events are short conversations that occur during incidental or planned activities. They are structured conversations that may help your child learn and begin to understand the process of change that is about to occur.
BEFORE THE MOVE – SAYING GOODBYE IS IMPORTANT • Discuss feelings that you and your child will experience while leaving friends. Invite families to contribute with images or drawings into a scrapbook.
• Let the child select their favourite place and make a celebration out of saying goodbye – go on a family outing and take photos.
• Together with your child, highlight important dates on the
calendar and mark off the days as the events occur (last day of childcare, last music class and last day in the house).
• Explain what it will be like as your child’s bedroom and surroundings are packed into boxes. Invite your child to help pack a box of their belongings and explain how the box will get to the new house.
• Read storybooks with your child about moving to different places.
TRANSITIONAL PHASE • Help your child select a few treasured items to be responsible for during the trip. • Help them select activities to complete on the journey — there are some playful
geography apps for young children which will help them learn about countries and landmarks.
ARRIVING IN A NEW COUNTRY • Research shows that attending educational institutions is often the first routine a child experiences when entering a new country.
• Involve your child in the process of looking for an
educational institution; visit the school/nursery’s website and the physical location together.
• Follow your child’s interests as well. For example, if they enjoy sports or music find a community group which caters to these activities. Moving countries is a positive experience for many families with young children and paves the way for new and varied opportunities. Working through different priming events with your child may help smooth a stressful transition period and support the child’s learning and development at the same time.

With so many new nurseries opening in Dubai every day, it can be difficult to keep up. Parents usually end up picking the one closest to their home or asking their friends for recommendations. The first exploratory visit can be overwhelming: ‘What should I ask?’ ‘Am I asking too many questions?’ More importantly: ‘Am I asking the right questions?’ Here are some key questions and why you should ask them: What qualifications do your teachers have?
Never feel too embarrassed to ask this question. While a standardised teaching license procedure for the UAE is underway, teaching qualifications currently vary across nurseries with each teacher carrying a different license from their home country. Look up different teaching methods and how they are applied, and aim to choose a nursery where teacher qualifications are aligned with the educational vision you have in mind for your child. What is the policy on taking children on for extra days — how much more is it going to cost me?
Money questions can be awkward, but with many nurseries charging big dirhams, it is your right to know what exactly the fees would cover. You also need to know whether they would be able to accommodate your child should the need be and how much it would cost to do so for each extra day. How do visitors register when visiting the nursery? For example, are they required to sign in and are copies of their Emirates IDs kept with security?
Safety is probably one of the primary issues you should address when trying to figure out whether a nursery would be your child’s dream second home. First of all, are their guards by the gate? How is the gate monitored? Are there CCTV cameras throughout the nursery? How do they check on visitors?
Nurseries have very different systems in place and while many of them may be efficient, it is always a matter of personal preference when it comes to considering the type of security you think your children may require. Do all members of staff have first aid training?
It is wrong to assume they all do. You would be surprised to see how many principals may not be able to immediately answer this question. Be on the lookout for new early learning toy creations as there are so many magnificent inventions popping up every month in the market. While you may think nurseries would only have the best of the best, there are plenty of toys you may or may not see on your visit. Take a closer look; are there any random toys laying around? Are there boxes full of toys just to keep the children occupied? There needs to be some sort of strategy for choosing carefully-selected toys and it goes without saying that every child should have something age appropriate to play with. Is the menu prepared on-site, daily?
You pay close attention to what your children have at home, but do you have any idea of what they will be feeding them at their new nursery? Nutrition is crucial during the early years and when we talk food we mean not only quality, but portions and the general thought process of putting together a full, balanced meal. - 2 egg whites - 1/2 cup caster sugar - 2 tsps. hot water - 2 tsps. Arabic coffee granules
1- Dissolve the coffee granules in the hot water. Set aside 2- Whip up the egg whites on high heat. Once they are frothy, gradually add the sugar 3- When they hit soft peaks, pour in the coffee and whip till stiff peaks form 4- Pipe mini meringues on a baking tray lined with wax paper 5- Bake at 120C for 45 minutes to an hour, or until the meringues dry out and harden

1 Preheat your oven to 175 C
FROSTING
1 Rinse and drain the macadamia nuts before placing them in a food processor and pulsing until smooth and creamy
2 Add the vanilla and salt before adding the almond milk, maple syrup and coconut oil. Blend it all for 2-3 minutes until very smooth, scraping down the sides when needed. Chill for 30 minutes before processing
ingredients in a small bowl and stir into a smooth chocolate. Add the mixture into the food processor, blend for 2 minutes. Pour into cupcake tins and place in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes

There is something about my boys and running naked, it is like the utmost joy in life. On a more serious note, I am really grateful that they are healthy and happy and that I can be around whenever the need me. It is not always perfect and is very exhausting physically, mentally and financially, but that look in their eyes is worth the sacrifice.

What are immunisations, more commonly known as vaccines?
Immunisation is an important and successful method to prevent children from becoming infected with certain dangerous and lifethreatening illnesses. Many countries worldwide have now introduced immunisation programmes and their effect can be measured by the drop in cases of infections. Why does my child need to be to be immunised if the rate of infection has dropped?
Infection rates have indeed dropped, but they still exist worldwide. If the immunisation rate drops in a community to a critically low level, these infections can re-surface as recently seen with the measles vaccination in the US or UK. Is it true that most children who get infected have been immunised?
Immunised children can still get infected as none of the vaccines offer a 100% protection rate. Most children’s immunisations protect them by 85 – 98%. Also, some children do not receive the full course and are even more at risk. 68 | DECEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Why is it necessary to immunise children when they are so young?
The reason why immunisation programmes worldwide start with very young infants is because they are the most vulnerable to serious infections and require specialised protection.

Children are naturally exposed to many more foreign particles called antigens every day through eating and breathing. These can cause a reaction from the child’s immune system which we either call an infection or allergy. What can I do to make the doctor’s visit for vaccinations less stressful?
• Prepare yourself and make sure you understand the importance of immunisation. Discuss any doubts with your paediatrician and do not be afraid to ask questions. • Remain positive. Children can sense when you are afraid of needles yourself. • Distraction is the best way to help children overcome their fear of needles.

CHILD Our spines have a natural curvature to help us move, maintain balance and walk properly. Scoliosis is a condition which makes the spine curve from side to side; its causes remain unknown, but it can be hereditary.
In its more severe forms, scoliosis can affect children’s performance at school and their quality of life in general.

A scoliosis curvature forms in the shape of an ‘s’ or ‘c’, an abnormal shape for the spine. If the curve becomes severe, it can cause pain and discomfort, and the more severe it becomes, the worse its possible effects on the lungs, heart and joints. HOW WILL SCOLIOSIS AFFECT YOUR CHILD?
Most of the time, scoliosis is too mild to affect a child’s life in any way and does not even require medical treatment. The more advanced it becomes, the higher the chances your child may require a back brace or even surgery.
“In some children, scoliosis can create a mild curvature, which often corrects itself in time. However, in some cases it can also be severe and require casting, bracing and ultimately surgery using magnetic rods to correct. In such cases, scoliosis can impact quality of life with limited activity, pain, reduced respiratory function or lowered self-confidence,” says Dr Firas Husban, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and a specialist in spine surgery at Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery.
“That is why it is important to catch the condition on time before it progresses to a more advanced stage where it requires surgery. Early detection of orthopaedic problems and regular follow-up throughout growth remains the most important measure in children with spinal deformities.” HOW WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
Some children show visible signs of scoliosis: the ribs are pushed out or one shoulder blade is noticeably higher than the other. At other times, it is not so obvious and because scoliosis does not hurt or happen suddenly, it is not always easy to diagnose. Schools in the UAE now test for scoliosis to identify it early on.
HOW EARLY ON CAN IT APPEAR?
Infantile scoliosis is defined as scoliosis which is first diagnosed between birth and three years of age. This category comprises about 1% of all idiopathic scoliosis in children, which is the most common type, and 60% of patients are males. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | DECEMBER 2016 | 71
H E A LT H There are two theories on how infantile scoliosis develops. One theory suggests that the spine bends during birth and never goes back. The other theory focuses more on a post-delivery approach suggesting that placing the baby on their back would flatten both the skull and back. WHAT ABOUT OLDER CHILDREN?
Scoliosis can be diagnosed between the ages of four and 10. This type is medically referred to as ‘juvenile scoliosis’ and comprises about 10% to 15% of all idiopathic scoliosis in children. At the younger end of the spectrum, boys are affected slightly more than girls and the curve is often leftsided. Towards the upper end of the age spectrum, scoliosis is predominantly diagnosed in girls. “The primary age for the onset of the spinal condition is nine to 14 years old occurring equally among both genders. Female children are eight times more likely to advance to a degree of curvature that requires treatment,” adds Dr Husban.
HOW IS SCOLIOSIS TREATED?
“Children younger than 10 years with curves greater than about 35 degrees tend to get worse without treatment. In order to check this, our team will assess children through a spinal screening that checks for deformities and then they will have a consultation with our physician,” says Dr Ali Zahran, consultant anaesthesiologist and head of the Anesthesia and Pain Management Department at the Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery. You can consult a paediatric orthopaedic specialist in case you need further tests or advice with managing the condition. Specialists will recommend methods to reduce the curvature:
• Casting ‘guides’ the spine towards the right shape. In children under two years of age, this external brace is worn all the time and can be changed only under anaesthesia. • Corrective surgery is the preferred option for severe cases and the type of surgery is dependent on your child’s age.
• The most common surgery conducted is usually to insert growing rods, which can be controlled externally post-surgery with magnetic rods.

BABY SWALLOWS AN OBJECT If baby cannot breathe or is struggling for breath, this is when you should be worried. Unless the object they swallowed is toxic (like a button battery), and if they are breathing and behaving normally, you should:
a) Try leaning them forward so they release it themselves.
b) Schedule an appointment with the paediatrician for an x-ray.
BABY IS HAVING SPASMS Benign sleep myoclonus causes seizure-like movements which only occur during sleep and stop instantly when they wake up. These movements, usually brought on by a loud noise or touch, are harmless. When to worry: If baby is having abnormal eye movements, has trouble breathing, turns blue or the seizure lasts more than five minutes – head to Emergency immediately.
BABY HAS AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO FOOD It is an emergency if your child has flaring nostrils, swollen lips, is wheezing or releasing high-pitched whistles as they inhale, or turning blue. If their breathing is ok, it is probably nothing too serious, and can be dealt with at a paediatrician’s office. Milder reactions to allergies include eczema, diaper rashes and diarrhoea
Parents usually assume it is jaundice when skin changes colour, but orange skin is actually different from yellow. If their eyes remain white and clear, it may be ‘carotenemia’, a very common phenomenon where the way baby food is manufactured affects its breakdown in the body causing more carotene absorption. When baby eats more carotene than they need, their sweat glands release this colour; you will notice it more on the nose, palms and soles of the feet. Should you be worried? Not at all! Carotenemia is harmless and baby’s skin will go back to normal as soon as you change their diet.

What You Need to Know About the Whooping cough mainly affects babies younger than six months old who are not yet protected by immunisations, and kids above 11 years old whose immunity has started to fade.
WHY IS IT CALLED A ‘WHOOPING’ COUGH?
This type of cough causes severe coughing spells, which can sometimes end with a ‘whooping’ sound when the child breathes in.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS • Runny

• Low-grade fever
• Diarrhoea (early on) Children under the age of 18 months with whooping cough should be watched at all times because the coughing spells can make them stop breathing. Young babies with bad cases may need hospital care too.

• If you are pregnant, get vaccinated with the whooping cough vaccine in your third trimester. • Make sure your baby gets all of their doses of the whooping cough vaccine (even if you got it when you

According to the UAE Ministry of Health’s Immunisation Guidelines, before vaccines, many children died from diseases that vaccines now prevent, whooping cough being one of them. Those same germs exist today, but babies are now protected by vaccines, so we do not see these diseases as often.

School brings the usual runny nose, sore throat, fever and headaches with it, but a simple flu can lead to more serious conditions such as ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia. With the flu easily spread through direct contact with an infected person, children are more susceptible to contracting the illness, especially since they are less likely to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze.
“It is recommended that children receive the flu or influenza vaccine to prevent the spread of the condition; it also reduces the likelihood of developing more serious diseases such as pneumonia or bronchitis,” says Dr Mohammed Zaheeruddin, specialist paediatrician at Medeor 24x7 Hospital, Dubai. HOW OFTEN SHOULD CHILDREN BE VACCINATED?
Children should be vaccinated annually for optimum results. The American Academy of Paediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States both recommend that children above six months old are vaccinated as it reduces the risk of contracting the flu by 50 to 60 per cent.
“Babies younger than six months are at high risk of contracting the flu, so it is recommended that parents, caregivers and older kids are vaccinated to ensure the disease is not spread,” adds Dr Zaheeruddin. AND WHEN…?
The vaccine should ideally be administered end of October as it expires the following
June giving the child a period of two to three months to build up immunity against the flu before the onset of the next season. However, it can be administered at any time. IS THE VACCINE FOR EVERYONE?
The flu vaccine should be avoided for those who have a severely weakened immune system, are allergic to eggs or vaccine antibiotics or have a severe asthma. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE CAREFUL While the flu vaccine helps reduce the risk of contracting the infection, the doctor also recommends teaching kids simple precautionary methods.
“Teach children the importance of covering their nose and mouth when they sneeze or cough. You can train them to use a handkerchief when they are sick or provide them with a pack of tissues to use at school. Make sure to wipe down their pencil cases and other stationery with antibacterial wipes daily after school to limit the spread of infections. Wash their toys, especially soft toys, on a regular basis too,” explains Dr Zaheeruddin. “Build their immunity by including vitamin C-rich foods in their diet on a daily basis – some good sources are citrus fruits.” Preventing the onset of the flu through vaccines helps reduce the risk of contracting serious diseases like pneumonia and bronchitis. Remember to always consult your doctor and follow up on your children’s medical records to avoid missing any important vaccinations.

Many of the diseases which affect our children are under-diagnosed. One of these diseases is allergic rhinitis, which affects school performance and attendance rates, yet is constantly mistaken for the flu.

Recent studies conducted by University Hospital Sharjah (UHS) have revealed that Allergic Rhinitis (AR), a type of inflammation in the nose caused by allergens, affects 36% of children in the UAE and 1020% of the population worldwide. Although very common among children, AR is widely under-diagnosed and may reduce sleep quality, lead to poor concentration, and affect school attendance and performance if left untreated.

“Environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, pollution and infection may contribute to the development of AR. Allergen exposure is another major contributing factor and typical allergens include house dust mites, grass and tree pollens, dander from animals such as cats, dogs and horses, in addition to mould usually found in bathrooms, kitchens and soil,” says Dr Hanan Al Sharif, consultant paediatrician at UHS. Symptoms of AR may vary among children, but the most common ones to look out for are a runny or itchy nose that does not clear up, sniffling, sneezing, mouth breathing, snoring, coughing, a recurring ear infection and sometimes reduced hearing.
“We identify the allergen by performing skin prick and IgE blood tests, after which we advise on how to avoid such allergens by taking simple measures such as purchasing an anti-allergy mattress, washing bed linens at 60ºC or higher and reducing the number of soft toys in their bedroom.” “For children who have a special soft toy they cannot be separated from, we suggest placing it in the freezer compartment of a fridge for six hours and returning it to the child when thawed," adds Dr Al Sharif. Calling for parents to be more aware of potential symptoms and take early action in order to prevent further complications, doctors highlight that a proper diagnosis via allergy testing and treatment is a must!
