In mid-December, as we were approaching the joyful festive season, a world-first viral story put a smile on our faces. A Dubai-born woman diagnosed with a deadly blood disorder as a child was able to give birth through IVF after doctors implanted parts of her right ovary back into her body. The parts had been frozen for over 15 years after they had removed them as a preventative measure during her puberty. Another happiness-worthy moment was when we learnt about the UAE Minister of State for Happiness Ohood Al Roumi’s #100DaysofPositivity initiative. Talk about positive education! Did you know that 85% of students in Dubai say they are happy? This new initiative is for schools, teachers, parents and students. It is designed to bring out the best teaching and learning from within to help embed positive education practices across all schools. Check out the hashtag for beautiful school moments and do not forget to ask your school to take part! The Mother, Baby & Child team wishes you a wonderful, prosperous year ahead.

The Mother, Baby & Child Awards are held annually to acknowledge the enormous contribution which brands, educational establishments, healthcare providers and other entities make towards shaping UAE-based families' futures through their role in helping mothers and nurturing children.
Now in its 5th year, the ceremony was held on December 7, 2016 at Habtoor Grand, Dubai Marina to celebrate mothers' favourites, who go over and above for families and communities, as voted by the mothers themselves. The only awards of their kind, the Mother, Baby & Child Awards have given mothers the opportunity to help shape vital industries which are part of their daily lives and recognise brands for supporting their families. This year, more than 180,000 Mother, Baby & Child readers voted for their favourites, a total of 338 nominees across different categories. Here is a look into what has made this year as special as ever. See you next year!

Savour All-Italian Kids’ Favourites
When we know a brand for a certain product and they go bigger, we are often tempted to try their new creations, especially when food is involved. Barilla is an Italian brand known for its pasta products, and they have decided to open their second outlet in Dubai (with only one other outlet in New York).
The Barilla eatery at Dubai Festival City keeps it simple, and that is why kids love it. Serving traditional Italian favourites including spaghetti, pizza and minestrone soup, it is well-lit, and offers high chairs, a kids’ menu with activities and colouring, and plenty of crayons.
The sumptuous dishes will change the way you think about ‘mall food’ with Rome-worthy warm bruschetta bread with olives and tomatoes and burrata mozzarella straight from heaven. The Mains did not disappoint either; the pizza was thin and crispy, filled with greens and dried bresaola beef, and the pasta – just perfect with fresh tomato sauce and seasoned ground beef. For dessert, a must-try is the caramel panna cotta with a creamy milk base and a thin top layer of caramel, a spoonful for the kiddies and one for mama with a sip of macchiato. Yep, definitely Italian!

SCHOOLS
and Childcare Show Finally Arrives in Dubai! In
partnership with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), the Schools and Childcare Show will be held from January 20 – 21 at Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC).
It will bring outstanding schools, nurseries, afterschool clubs and educational institutions from Dubai and worldwide all under one roof. Admission is free of charge.
Parents in Dubai are certainly pleased: “Finding the right school for my child is one of the most important things to me. It can be hard in Dubai because you often have to visit the schools one by one which is often difficult when you are working,” Jenny Arnold, mother-of-two told Mother, Baby & Child.
“It is good to have such an event which is held in partnership with the KHDA. This reassures me that the information I will receive will be correct,” said motherof-three Lana Ahmed.
Schools and childcare institutions from across the city are also excited about the event. Not only will they have stalls so they can meet parents face to face, but they will be able to answer questions and discuss important topics in the seminar corner while their students showcase their talents on stage for all to see!
Taaleem, GEMS, Fortes, Horizons and many other leading Dubai and international schools and nurseries have all signed up. This is the first time this event will be taking place in Dubai.

Bake and Wander at the Walnut Grove
Set within a warm wooden ambience, Walnut Grove City Walk is a breath of fresh air for the rather modern complex. It looks like an intricate jungle, Alice’s land of wonder with lush greenery, whimsical décor and colourful, drool-worthy dessert displays.
The food at Walnut Grove is as exceptional as the interiors. Their friendly, happy staff know their menu and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Highlights from the menu include sweet and savoury social dining boards, burger classics prepared with a twist, homemade pasta variations and scrumptious healthy salads in massive portions.
desserts would look like – and they do not disappoint. Like something straight out of an Instagram shot, the dessert board is something out of this world, with something for everyone including rainbow cupcakes, goldchocolate eclairs and carefully-crafted macarons.
Walnut Grove also offers its younger diners their own specialised experience with a dedicated kids’ menu and hosts kid-friendly interactive baking sessions where the youngsters prepare their own unique creations, in addition to an open bakery experience where they can watch the skilful bakers bring each cake to life. Grab Some Food
for the Soul
‘Tesoro’ is Spanish for treasure, and that is exactly what this Taj Hotel eatery is. One of the trendiest venues in town, Tesoro has revived its menu for the upcoming season focusing on food for the soul. Think hearty, flavoursome Moorish dishes…
Since you are visiting with the kids, you must give the Chef’s Plank a try. A selection of small plates to share for a set price, it would give them a chance to try more than one dish. The plank is no sample-size setup; you get reasonable portions of signature dishes including the creamy Burrata Bowl,
mini Padpi Chaat wheat crisps with yoghurt and potato – and much more.
The mouth-watering mains will not disappoint either. We loved the Arabic mixed grill with perfectly-cooked lamb chops, chicken shish taouk and grilled prawns. For dessert, we did not expect to see Tiramisu, yet we did – and it was delicious! If you are looking to have a yummy dinner with stunning views, we can safely say Tesoro has the best seats in town

PARENTING HOW TO SAVE ON CHILDREN’S CLOTHING Follow these savvy tips to avoid spending a fortune on your child’s wardrobe.
PLAY MIX AND MATCH WITH NEW COLLECTIONS Children’s retailers tend to group items, with new collections placed by the front of the store. If you are looking to save, you may buy that fabulous pair of purple-glitter shorts almost fresh off the designer’s sketch board, but match it with a top from the clearance racks. 38 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
BUY GENDER NEUTRAL
TIP:
THE MOST NEUTRAL COLOURS ARE YELLOW AND NAVY.
It may be tempting to give in to good old stereotypes and it is even more confusing nowadays with new hue combinations like Facebook blue and Pokémon yellow (who comes up with these things?).
Kids can share items like pyjama pants, winter gear, raincoats, tennis shoes and even sweaters as long as you buy them in neutral shades and simple designs.
‘SECONDHAND’ IS NOT A BAD WORD
GO A SIZE UP
Flea markets are a Dubai institution – kind of like brunches. Trust us, you can find items with the tags still on – and even if you do not – you will end up with bargains and lovely clothes at a fraction of the cost. Remember, kids outgrow clothes SO FAST.
Speaking of how quickly children outgrow clothes, going a size up is always a good idea. It will not even show, especially with items such as raincoats, snow trousers and pyjamas. Kids can wear a new item for a couple of months and then it gets stored away for the next year leaving them room to grow.
Just be sure to thoroughly wash these items before adding them to your child’s wardrobe.
BUY ‘PLAY CLOTHES’ There is a big difference in terms of quality and price between clothes they can play in and others they wear to outings and even school. Look for deals where you can buy two or three shirts for around AED 30, or discounted graphic tees, sweatpants, flip-flops and shorts. You will thank us after two hours of playing at the park. Just be sure to thoroughly wash these items before adding them to your child’s wardrobe.
SELL AND SWAP Hold a garage sale and sell all of your kids’ old clothes. Alternatively, organise a swap shop with your friends. Ask each one of them to bring 10 to 15 pieces in great condition and approximately the same size, and you will end up with new additions to your child’s closet without actually spending a dime.
RECYCLE While getting rid of old clothes the right way makes sense, keeping them for siblings is often a good idea. Whether you have more than one child or you are planning to, siblings will not mind wearing the same clothes again as long as they are not too old or belong in the 60s.
KNOW YOUR BUDGET SHOPPING A huge part of shopping on a budget is knowing where to actually shop. Here are some options:
• Dubai Outlet Mall is located on the Dubai-Al Ain Road (Route 66, just off the E611 highway). It is open from 10 am – 10 pm, seven days a week and there is ample parking. Shops offer 30 per cent or more off regular-priced clothing.
• Dragon Mart is a gigantic, maze-like mall and everything it sells is made in China. It is located on Al Awir Road, International City.
• Global Village is home to a multitude of pavilions from
different countries. You can hunt for bargains and haggle, but will have to wait for Dubai’s cooler months to do that. It usually runs from November to April.
• Al Karama offers quite an adventure for discounted shopping. Located in an older neighbourhood near Dubai Creek, it is a world away from Dubai’s sleek malls – just be wary of counterfeit goods.

Saving is a habit which has to be taught at a very young age. Surrounded by luxury in Dubai, our kids are already born into the ‘silver spoon’ mentality. Mindless spending becomes a habit because we hardly say ‘NO’ to them yet we expect them to save money and know its value.
Here are some smart tips to get your kids into the habit of saving and understanding the meaning of hardearned money:

Make sure they know the value of money: Talk to your kids more often about money, mentioning how much things cost and what could have been saved. Explain that money can buy happiness for someone in need.
4
Teach them how to use it: Give your child some money and ask them to spend it on making someone happy. You will be surprised at the ideas they come up with.
Go on a financial field trip: Have your child make all of their deposits in person at the bank. Get them to take the money right up to the counter and get used to dealing with the teller.
If it is their first visit, call ahead and see if someone can give you a tour of the vault – kids are often fascinated with that. When you get home, log onto the bank’s web portal and show them where the money is and how it shows up in their account after they make a deposit.

PARENTING
It is no secret that a mother dedicates most of her time to her family.
20
A shopping trip suddenly becomes an excuse to buy your toddler a new pair of cute jeans and you secretly look through spa menus for mummy-andme pampering packages.
NOT-SO-SNEAKY WAYS TO FIND TIME FOR YOURSELF 46 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
While spending time with your family will always remain a priority, you need some me-time to relax and unwind. You probably know the ‘happy mama-happy baby’ motto already, so here are 30 – totally okay (and legal, we promise) ways to find some time for yourself.
1
Make it a part of your routine. Children love routines and are more likely to stick to an activity if it is a daily thing. Making time for yourself should also be a part of the routine – make sure it is mandatory!
2
Set a goal. It may sound too obvious for some, but for other mums me-time does not even make sense. Take a step back and decide why is it exactly that you need more free time. Setting a goal will make working towards it worthwhile.
3
Make a wish list. What activities are you looking to do more of? Make a list and prioritise two or three things which you will focus on for a while before moving on to the next batch. Choose things that make you happy, relaxed, sane or all three.
4
Embrace nap time. The kids are sleeping and it is all quiet, it is finally time to…get some cleaning done? Wrong! It is time to write, listen to music, enjoy a cup of coffee or take a short nap yourself. Go ahead, we will not tell anyone.
5
Create your own spa experience. It may not be as amazing as the real deal, but whenever you have some time when you are just sitting on the couch – or even watching TV – grab an aromatic lotion and give yourself a nice foot massage.
6
Take a bath. Another experience that reminds us of the spa, and it is as easy as one-twothree. A 20-minute bath is the perfect way to relax – all you need is bath salt, oils, candles and voilà.
7
The early bird gets everything. Wake up a bit earlier than everybody else, even if it is only for 30 minutes. You can enjoy this time much more than any extra sleep you will get – pray, read, sip on some good coffee – just relax.
8
Structure your evenings. As much as waking up early can be beneficial, it may not be for everyone. If you are a night owl, schedule some time after the kids go to bed for some relaxation or evening time with hubby.
9
Plan your meals ahead of time. Write it all down, from recipes to ingredients, and head to the supermarket for once-and-for-all grocery shopping. This will save you plenty of time and you will not have to go back and get whatever is missing for this dish or that snack.
10
Try to delegate. Your young ones may not be the best at household chores, but they can help you do the little things – and with all that energy they have, they will be happy to dive right in. Also, get hubby to help.

11
Outsource too. Do you really need to be doing all of the cooking and cleaning yourself? Not at all! You do not have to exceed your budget either. It takes a few minutes of simple math to allocate resources properly and find out what it is you can spend less on in order to get a maid or use a cleaning service.
12
Forget perfection. Focus on doing any task at hand adequately rather than doing everything the perfect way. This way, you will get more done and have free time to do the things you love.
16
Look for child-friendly stores. There are plenty of places around town where you can drop the kids off and set out to do whatever it is you need to. Find a play centre at the mall or kids’ area at that big home retailer. There are even cafés in Use Fridays to plan. LEAVING FOR
MOTHERHOOD A UAE MOTHER’S MATERNITY LEAVE STORY
50 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
We have been spotting headlines on maternity leave laws in the UAE, the latest being on the Abu Dhabi government extending it for staff. The capital is now giving women a three-month paid leave after having a baby, and allowing them to leave two hours early (rather than one) for a year after their baby is born.
A maternity leave extension in Dubai is very likely, with the UAE Gender Balance Council confirming that a new law is being drafted. In July 2016, one UAE-based company decided to take the first step. Atkins and Faithful+Gould, its subsidiary company, doubled its paid maternity leave. Fiona Blakey, Regional Quality, Safety, Security and Environment (QSSE) Country Manager at Faithful + Gould and mother to baby Erin, tells Mother Baby & Child about how it has all happened.
THE ARRIVAL
When I arrived in Dubai four years ago, I never imagined I would be starting my family here. Newly married and with an exciting new career ahead, it was not even on my mind! I had this exciting place to discover. It was all so overwhelming, but I just knew it was the right decision after being made redundant in the UK; it was a positive move.
The one thing I promised myself after having my daughter is that I needed to make a difference for other mums. If you were, like myself, arriving in Dubai as a newly-married couple, you never look up or research maternity leave allowance or laws. Maybe you had arrived with your hubby and the plan was to stay home.
WELCOMING BABY ERIN
On day 45 of my maternity leave, I was home thinking about how I would report to the office the next day, with a rack of bottles for washing surrounded by nappies. Looking at my daughter Erin made me cry, the thought of leaving
Fiona Blakey
her to go into the office was hard to stomach. I felt like I had blinked and suddenly I needed to be back at work. Such a big change and yet only 45 days to adapt! Luckily, I had been able to bolt on my annual leave, which meant I did not get any time off during my pregnancy or the months before. After giving birth, I took a total of four months off work, two paid and two not, and managed to add some days from religious holidays.
Back at work full-time, I pushed myself to apply for a promotion, hence a challenging first year for me as a new mum in a new role trying to find the right balance. However, I managed to find a good nursery which accepted my daughter at such a young age. So nursery tick, promotion tick, now to tackle this maternity policy. It took me a year to start making some progress and, luckily for me, the Women’s Business Network was already starting to focus on some of these areas, but no policy changes had taken place.
My colleague and I researched our competitors, why we should make the change, what the business would gain from it and how it was the right thing to do. We presented to the board and received an approval the same day – not even a year after I gave birth and the change had already taken place!
We have now changed the policy from minimum labour law to 14 weeks with full pay and many women are benefiting from this. To be honest, it feels great: women are thanking us and, even though we may not be the ones who have benefited from it, we needed to act on their behalf. My advice to you is very simple: Do not moan, do not ignore it, be a game changer and just ask! You never know what the outcome will be, but you can only try.

Kent College Dubai What are your principles and values when it comes to running the school?
In the course of our first term, the staff and pupils collaborated in drawing up a Learner Profile, which identifies the attributes that we want our pupils to develop in the course of their time in the school, and which we believe will set them up for life. These reflect the values that run through everything we do as a school and are closely aligned with the same core principles of our sister school, Kent College Canterbury. So in essence, we educate our pupils to be: kind, resilient, open-minded, reflective, articulate, principled, creative, ambitious, courageous and resourceful.
What inspires you when it comes to managing and improving the school environment and encouraging students?
The school environment is first and foremost the people in it. When you have got teachers and support staff who care about getting the best out of pupils, and who have the inspirational qualities in themselves to motivate and encourage them, the school becomes a rich environment for learning. My own inspiration comes from the fundamental satisfaction of every teacher to see each pupil grow in awareness and confidence as they move through the school. Tell us about some challenges you have encountered and how you have addressed them.
The main challenge in starting the school was to ensure that we were able to open on our planned start date and that everyone was ready to start teaching from the outset. We achieved the first objective through the determination to meet the promise we had been making to parents (some of whom were justifiably sceptical) that we would open on time, and found solutions to the problems
52 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
as they occurred. We have an excellent team of resourceful and adaptable staff, so we were also able to start teaching in earnest from day one. What do you think is the best way to deal with a student discipline incident and the communication process with the parents?
Setting up clear expectations from the outset about behaviour and pupils’ respect for each other and for the rules reduces the likelihood of disciplinary issues. The best way to deal with an incident when it occurs is to investigate it at the right level, and apply the school’s discipline policy fairly and consistently once you have established the facts. It always helps to involve the parents in the process and let them know that something has occurred, and in the rare case of a more serious incident, to discuss the facts and the intended punishment with them before making a final judgement. Always write to them after the decision so that the incident and the consequences are on the record. What aspect of your school are you most proud of?
The close ties with our sister school in Canterbury, and the way in which we have created such a vibrant and positive school from scratch in such a short time.
Do you think we would eventually adopt a no-
homework policy in UAE schools?
No. I think homework is an important aspect of education because it involves the pupils and their families in the responsibility of learning out of school time. Particularly at secondary level, it is essential to reinforce work covered at school and allow pupils to prepare and undertake assignments in their own space and learn how to manage their time. If students were to describe your school, what would they say is their favourite aspect?
We were very fortunate in being given approval to open all year groups at once, so we have pupils from all ages from three to 17. As a result, we have a great sense of the school as a family, and have had some fantastic whole-school events such as National Day, the end-of-term concert and our inaugural InterHouse Cup competition. I think the pupils would say that those occasions have been really special. What do you focus on to ensure students’ learning experience is as comprehensive and dynamic as possible?
A sense of security and confidence with their teachers and peers is crucial so that they can focus on learning knowing that they are allowed to get things wrong and be given another chance to try again and do better.

Bus
Our children go to school and come back home by bus every day, often spending plenty of time on board due to traffic or a long commute. How can we ensure they stay safe and help school staff who are supervising them? GETTING ON THE BUS
• Children should be at the bus’s designated pick-up point five minutes before it arrives. They should never run to or from the bus. • They should line up away from the road or street as the bus approaches. • They should always wait until the bus arrives, stops and the driver opens the door saying it is ok to get in. • Make sure there are no object dangling from their bags which could get caught in any part of the vehicle.
ON-BOARD BEHAVIOUR
• If seat belts are available, they must buckle up. • They must sit properly, facing forward at all times. • Throwing objects inside or outside the bus is not permitted. • They must lower their voice so as not to disturb other children or the bus driver who needs to concentrate and keep his eyes on the road. • Children should not eat or drink on the bus.

REMEMBER! According to the RTA’s Guiding Manual of School Transport in the Emirate of Dubai, the school principal is solely entitled to deny any student the school transport service if they make one of the following offences:
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…
In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) introduced a few changes to school bus specifications earlier this year. • All school buses in Dubai are now equipped with a GPS technology tracking system. • School buses were allowed to modify their interiors; they can now carry up to 60 students only if they have two fire extinguishers, two first-aid kits and two attendants. • The UAE’s biggest school bus operator has introduced an app. Which enables parents to track the bus boarding status of their child, the bus location and receive updates in real time. They can also pay bus fees through the app. • Many buses have installed rear view cameras to help drivers. • Some school buses are now equipped with cameras which stream to a control room back at the school.
58 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
• Cause a school bus delay more than three times during the academic year • Violate any safety rules or pose danger to others during the bus trip • Refuse to ride the bus from the students’ gathering point agreed upon in advance by the school administration. • Leave the school bus before reaching their designated drop-off point without prior permission. • Continually cause trouble during bus trips, with more than three cases reported against them.

HOMESCHOOLING Is it right for you? 60 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
At present, there is no ruling concerning the homeschooling of expat children in the UAE, so it is allowed. However, it is recommended that you subscribe to an accredited programme so that if your child does re-enter mainstream schooling, you have the necessary evidence available. Homeschooling has become a popular option for parents who want to provide their child with a high quality education, without paying the hefty price tag associated with it. “It is not just the price, but rather the attention being given to students. Nowadays, each class consists of a minimum of 25-30 students. Children are not getting the attention they need,” says Diane Menzies, a mum of four who has been homeschooling her children for the past six years.
With the rising costs of education and waiting lists in excess of 12 months to get into schools, it is becoming quite a task to educate your children in the UAE.
Over 700 families have taken matters in to their own hands by opting to educate their children themselves, at home.
Many parents also choose homeschooling if their children are pursuing a career in sports or music and need a flexible timetable to work around training. “We work with families from all walks of life. Some have just moved to the region and are unable to find a spot in any school, others have children who need a more individualised learning programme,” explains Dorlyn Weybourne, an enrolment coordinator for K12, a US-based online education programme. But is it really a viable option? Cody Claver, manager at K12, says: “It is a good option, but maybe not for all families. Choosing to be your child’s teacher is tricky, it is a balancing act that some manage well and others do not. The other option would be to hire a tutor to guide your child through the online curriculum.”
Still undecided? Here is some homeschooling 101 you need to consider first: QUALIFICATIONS – BECOMING A PARENT-TEACHER
As a parent, even if you are qualified to teach, you will never be able to exercise as much discipline as required with your child. While there is no official degree required to homeschool, the instruction delivered will depend solely on your skills. Are you prepared to act like a teacher and ensure that your method of instruction will suit and benefit your child? CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES
If you have children of different age groups, you may need to combine subjects which are not age-specific such as history, literature or the arts into one class for all. Assignments can then be tailored according to every student’s needs. Other subjects such as maths and reading will need to be tailored in line with each student’s level. A SET EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Homeschoolers structure their days however would work best for them. Many choose to begin their day very early in the morning, as in a traditional school, while others blur the strict distinction between ‘home’ and ‘school’. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2017 | 61
EDUCATION There are many educational methods you can follow at home, rather than one as you would choose for your child in traditional schooling; these methods include Waldorf, Montessori, classical, leadership education, interest-led learning, unit study and more. While more options may mean more freedom, combining too many methods often leads to confusion. Will you be able to pick just one method? Make sure you have a reasoning behind your choice and aim to stay as close to your pre-determined educational goals as possible. TESTING PROGRESS
No school means no standardised testing structure in place. You may choose for your children to be tested at intervals to ensure they are progressing or postpone this until they are in high school. Either way, there should be a systemised approach for you to be able to measure their progress and gauge their interest in certain subjects and topics. FRIENDSHIPS
Ask any child what their favourite part of the school day was and they will most probably say something about their friends. While you may try to compensate with outdoor activities, neighbourhood parties or otherwise, your children will miss out on the ever-crucial peer-to-peer interaction. FUTURE SCHOOLING
One of the main things you need to consider is whether there would be any problems when/if you return home as some countries, including the UAE, do not recognise homeschooling as valid and transfer certificates are frequently required to enrol in a school. If you decide to enrol a child in a school here in the future, it can be done, but not all schools will be open to accepting previously homeschooled children and you can expect to have some difficulties. SUPPORT, ADVICE AND TIPS

Traditional education may be a heavy financial commitment, but apart from some flexibility – which can also be negative – homeschooling does not offer much when compared with its counterpart. When it comes to education, there is no easy path. Good luck with whichever system you pursue for your children!

The Early Years British Curriculum… Explained! By Gurkamal Punia Dasani Living in Dubai, it is often very confusing to choose a nursery or school for your child. While on most occasions we would not need to make curriculum decisions back in our home countries, here we come face to face with an important choice: British, American or Australian? How much would it really matter when the children are young and all they seem to do is play? The decision is entirely up to you, but what really makes the difference is knowing the types of curriculums. Britons represent the largest western community in the United Arab Emirates, so it is no wonder that the most popular early years curriculum in Dubai is the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), but what does this curriculum really consist of? THE FOUNDATION
A child’s experiences from birth to five years have a strong impact on their future. Mastering early developmental skills lays the correct foundation for a child to be able to develop further skills they will need to learn throughout life. Children learn through play so, even though you may feel like they ‘only play’ at the nursery or school during the early years, this is actually how your child is learning, problem solving and preparing for more complex tasks. THE MAIN PRINCIPLES
The EYFS curriculum sets high standards and promotes teaching 64 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’. The curriculum is based on four main principles: • Quality and consistency • A secure foundation • Partnership with team members • Equality of opportunity In addition, there are four overarching principles:
• Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
• Children learn and develop well in enabling environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers. • Children learn and develop in different ways and at different rates. The EYFS Framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities. LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS COVER:
• Areas of learning and development which must shape activities and experiences (educational programmes) for children in all early years settings
• Early learning goals that providers must help children work towards (the knowledge, skills and understanding children should have at the end of the academic year in which they turn five)
The EYFS supports an integrated approach to early learning and care. The progress check at the age of two assists professionals to seek further help if a child’s development is not as expected, providing guidance and allowing support to be implemented as early as possible if required. THE EYFS FRAMEWORK
• Assessment arrangements for measuring progress
The curriculum’s Framework does not require the progress check to be completed in a prescribed or standard format. It only specifies that information about a child’s development is provided to parents in the prime areas of learning and development of the EYFS.
THE SEVEN AREAS LISTED BELOW ARE THE BASIS OF LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE EYFS CURRICULUM:
Parents are encouraged to become involved in their child’s development and learn how they can support development at home. A ‘what to expect when’ developmental guide is provided to parents.
• Communication and language • Physical development • Personal, social and emotional development • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the world • Expressive arts and design
Apart from being the core document for all professionals working in the foundation years, the EYFS Framework gives mums and dads the confidence that regardless of where they choose for their child to be educated in the early years, they can be assured that the same statutory commitments and principles will underpin their child’s learning and development experience. EDUCATION
I I M TER ! S N I BEGool after the holidays
h c s o t k c Going ba
The new school term comes after a long winter break and the kids often feel like it has been ages since they have last been to school. A mini back-to-school event, the new term may be an extension of the older one, but it still brings about its own challenges.
66 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Here are some tips on preparing for school after the holidays: SCHOOL SUPPLIES
While you still have your children’s supplies from the first term, it is important to do a quick check-up to ensure they have all they need. There may be some supplies which have been lost, are broken or need replacing for any reason.
let it drag on. Let us not forget that it is the end of a long, joyful holiday… Tune in to work out how they are feeling and coping, offering to help as much as you can. This would also be the perfect time to check for any signs of bullying or other troubling school problems. To ease any anxiety, make a list together of things they can look forward to this new term. This will turn anxiety into excitement to welcome the new school period. CONNECT WITH A TEACHER
LUNCH BOXES AND AFTER-SCHOOL SNACKS
Remember, the children are going back to school in colder weather. You will need to make sure the household is stocked with everything they may need. For after-school snacks, you will need more options to keep them warm such as cheese which can be grilled and cocoa for the hot milk.
Teacher-student relationships are very important for your children’s wellbeing. A teacher can be an anchor for support and motivation. Ask your child if they would like to connect with a teacher to tell them about their holiday adventures, you can help drop them an email for a chat over lunchtime on the first day of school.
SETTING GOALS
TAKE YOUR TIME
The kids may still be in ‘holiday mode’. The best way to ensure they are well-aware of the fact that they will be starting a new term is to set goals. Have a chat with them about what they are looking to achieve this term, whether it is joining a club, getting better grades or even making new friends. REVIEW HOMEWORK
Did they have any homework to finish over the holidays? Many children go on break and leave everything behind, only to find that there was some holiday work to do – talk about rushing on a school night! RE-ADJUSTING THE SLEEP SCHEDULE
No more late nights! It is time to adjust the sleep schedule for the entire family, and this should happen at least one week before school as it will take time.
Skip late night meals and soda, and open the blinds in the morning to let natural light in.
Fast forwarding through preparations will just intensify stress levels for the entire family. Rather than rushing and panicking, take it slow, and make sure your children feel and do the same. Remind them that feeling a little bit anxious is normal, and that other children will most probably be feeling the same way too. Remember to look forward to the new term and the opportunities it will bring too.
Most importantly, are the children happy to go back to school? They may be feeling anxious or stressed and it is crucial to evaluate this before the new term.
A HAPPY RETURN

EDUCATION
TECHNOLOGY in the Classroom
How are Dubai educators Utilising IT? From environmental classroom simulations for biology class to virtual math manipulatives to help students visualise complex concepts, teachers all over the world have been using new technologies for next-level methods of instruction.
Technology has given us plenty of tools and many schools/nurseries in Dubai have been using them to improve the classroom experience for students, ensuring they get the most out of their education. 68 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

ere, Mother, Baby & Child interviews top schools and education experts to know more about how technology has been helping your children and what is in store for them in the future. “Technology is a ubiquitous part of learning today. We have made some strategic decisions to decide how children and staff will be using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching, learning and communication processes. It was then that we decided that we would be an Apple-only school.” Graham Beale, Principal The Arcadia Preparatory School
• No heavy school bags: Instead of piles of books, pupils
at The Arcadia Preparatory School now carry a single iPad with all of the information they need for lessons preloaded.
• A good mix of traditional and modern teaching methods: The school’s policy encourages students to use traditional mediums of learning through books and several hours in the library and receive training to become technology-savvy right from a very young age.
• Environmentally-friendly: All school circulars are distributed to parents through an application.
• Seamless communication between parents and teachers: Parents are able to access the learning feed from their own mobile devices and can share, comment and give their feedback in real-time. • Cyber security: The robust network security system protects students from cyber threats and educates them on the risks of unsafe browsing.
“We have successfully used iPads and Smart Boards at the preschool age at our nurseries and believe that these products are both appealing and appropriate at that age. While we see many children who are technology savvy at such a young age, we believe that the right software on an iPad and a Smart Board offers the perfect combination of entertainment and education regardless of a child’s inclination towards technology.” Monica Valrani, CEO Ladybird Nursery & Early Learning Centre “Kids are more motivated and keen to learn using the interactive board. Our teachers have been practicing Jolly Phonics, matching games and music to movement. This way they can own students’ attention easer and deliver the subject more efficiently. Kids love it because the learning process is more interactive with songs and storytelling.” Renu Navani, Founder & CEO Milestones Nursery “The future is all about technology and education cannot lag behind. Not only has it taken over our world and lives, but it has also paved its way through education, reshaping academic delivery. Every educator would agree that technology exposes students to a world of learning tools, giving them the opportunity to cultivate their curiosity, make connections and unleash their creativity.” Daad El Yafi, Head of English Language Arts Academia Management Solutions International (AMSI) “At our nursery, we introduce and reinforce these skills by focusing on using equipment that responds to the child’s action (at basic level) and the use of simple real ICT equipment available in the classroom like remotes, CD players, cameras (nursery, FS1 and FS2) and computers for fun educational games at Foundation Stage.” Vandana Gandhi, Founder and CEO British Orchard Nursery MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2017 | 69

Give Your Home an
(AFFORDABLE)
Extreme Makeover
A makeover can breathe life into your home. When it comes to making changes, every little detail counts. Something as simple as your seasonal cleaning will make a huge difference in the way you see your space and the way you feel living there.
An extreme makeover, however, is a completely different story. It is about making drastic changes which will transform your home and – believe it or not – it need not feel drastic. Here, Mother, Baby & Child gives you some tips to help you with the task:
START WITH THE BEDROOM AND BATHROOM
• Your bedroom is your palace of peace. Everything – from the comforters to the sheets – should reflect who you are. Give it seasonality with more fur and quilted bedspreads for winter and cotton piqué coverlets for summer. • Dress your bed the way you want it to look. From electric green sheets to comforters covered in spring florals, who says you have to keep it simple? Do not forget the children’s bedding too!
• Make a sky of golden stars with rubber stamps and a metallic ink pad in your children’s bedroom. Wallpaper their closet for sheer joy every time they open it. • Add a super quirky lamp to this or that corner. Experiment with lightbulbs; ditch the standard flame tip and try using clear Edison bulbs instead. Get rid of any classic lampshades for a more modern look. 72 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
• Okay, so you want more drama. Change the colour of your lampshades to black. It creates lovely pools of light and – added bonus – they will be super resistant to chocolate smudges.
•Bath accessories can be found at very low prices and will transform the way your bathroom looks. Try polish-nickel soap dishes and trays for a hotel-like vibe. • Create an oasis out of your bathroom with overscale towels in new hues. Add a few small candles which you can light when you have guests – or not.
NOW FOR THE LIVING ROOM
• The living room is one of the most ‘active’ rooms of your home. The furnishing needs to reflect that, so it is always good to go with bold or bright colours. If you love your paler palettes, you can still do a soft pink, but add some quirky pillows or centrepieces to create contrast.
Learn About Home Improvement, DIY and More…
• Wooden beams are a good way to completely transform your living room. It gives your space a more ‘homey’ look and will sure spice up that boring ceiling.
• Buy a tree in a basket or planter and put it in that empty corner. An instant dose of happiness! • Paint your baseboards a dark colour. Whether it is Spanish brown or dark grey, it will make the walls pop and hide any scuffs. You can also paint the walls chocolate brown or even Hermès orange with a semi-gloss finish. • Dull bookshelves are boring. Liven them up by painting the back and sides a contrasting colour. Pick the colour up across the room with a pillow. • Consider setting the furniture and carpet at an angle. It will change the dynamic and give the illusion of a livelier, more active setting which perfectly embodies the room. Programme your flat-screen TV to display video art.
FINALLY, THE KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM
• An inexpensive way to completely change how your kitchen or dining room look is with light fixtures. They come in all shapes, colours and sizes and can give the illusion that this is a new space. • Buy a length of crown moulding at least two inches deep and create a picture ledge. Then, get standard frames and put your children’s art or family photos. Change the content around every few weeks.
• Find beautiful containers for your counters, think white modern canisters for flour, sugar and pasta with a matching tray for oils and vinegars.

Bad Dieting Advice Yo Have Got to STOP Beli u evin
g
"Stop snacking."
Eating small amounts of food more frequently will help you lose weight as it keeps your metabolism going and makes it easier to curb cravings. The key is making smarter food choices; snacking on nuts, fruits and yogurt will keep your energy levels high throughout the day. Such foods make perfect snacks when eaten along with three to four small main meals. 74 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
"Detoxing is for weight loss."
A detox is one way to start a diet, but if you are thinking longterm, this is not the way to go. It is impossible to maintain for very long and coming down to a healthy weight is a lifestyle choice.
"Go for an all-organic diet."
Organic foods can be the wiser choice when it comes to health and general wellbeing – on certain occasions at least, but eating conventionally-grown produce will not make you gain weight. It is more important to focus on quantities and what you are actually eating than fussing over whether it is organic or not.

"Eat less, move more."
Eating less without putting any thought into what you are eating will make you hungry; when you get hungry, you eat even more than you would have eaten in the first place had you not waited that long. Choosing foods that keep you full for longer will enable you to give your body what it needs and avoid hunger pangs.
Told to ‘move’ more? Consider this: • You burn 19.7 calories when climbing 11 floors of stairs. That means if you climb 29 floors of stairs every day, you burn off one small apple worth of energy.
• If you park your car a mile away from work (1.6 km), you burn 80 calories to walk to work. This is less than a banana in calorie world. As you lose weight, your body becomes more conservative with energy and motivates you to lower your activity level by making you lazier. Invest your energy in structured exercise which will give you better results, faster. Working out strategically is way better than wasting energy over more daily movement, especially if you do not like taking the stairs or walking.
Stephanie says: “The way you eat can constantly be improved, so simply choose one meal at a time and tweak it. Make the changes long lasting and most importantly understand WHY you need to make changes and you will stick to them. Throw the FADS away and learn to love your healthy lifestyle instead of seeing it as a burden.”

Mango and Sweet Coconut Sticky Rice By Gangwon Konluk Executive Chef, Fuchsia
Creamy, sweet and delicious, even your toddler will love this for breakfast or as a snack.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 cup Thai glutinous rice, soaked in water and covered for 2 hours • 1.5 cups coconut cream, preferably freshly extracted • 3/4 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons rice flour • 4 fully ripe Thai mangoes • Sesame seeds for garnish
METHOD
• Rinse the soaked rice until the water runs clear, then drain well and steam the rice – this could take anywhere between 20-30 minutes for the rice to be fully cooked. • When the rice is fully translucent, immediately turn off the heat and keep it hot in the steamer. • In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of the coconut cream, the sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt over medium heat and bring to boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. • Add the hot rice to the coconut syrup, mix well and remove from heat. Cover the saucepan and let the rice steep and cool down for 40 minutes, stirring once halfway through. • While the rice is steeping, put the remaining 1/2 cup of coconut cream and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a small saucepan and whisk in the rice flour. • Place the pan over medium heat and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes, until the mixture comes to a gentle boil and thickens. Remove the pan from heat and set the mixture aside to use as a topping. • Working with one mango at a time, use a sharp paring knife or vegetable peeler to peel off the skin. Flip the mango over and remove the flesh from the opposite side in the same way – giving you 2 fillets. Repeat with the remaining mangoes.
Fuschia
• To serve, arrange 2 mango fillets on each of the 4 serving plates. Divide the sticky rice evenly and spoon the coconut cream topping on top, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve immediately. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2017 | 79

5 FOOD DELIVERY APPS
(FOR WHEN YOU JUST CANNOT COOK) Mummies, we know those nights: hubby is driving home from work – starving – and the kids are practicing their ‘artistic’ skills all over the walls; you have just burnt an entire family serving of pasta and life is not looking very good.
Luckily, Dubai never disappoints when it comes to spoiling us (we like to call it a must). Here are some delivery apps to make your life – and those crazy nights – much easier:
DELIVEROO
This app gives you different categories to choose from, so you do not have to think about where the dish you are looking to order comes from (is teriyaki Chinese or Japanese?).
EATEASILY
This app is a fuss-free platform. As the name suggests, it is great for easily placing an order through a clean-cut, user-friendly tool.
From healthy food to perfectfor-sharing family meals, it is all on there. The app lists plenty of restaurants which do not typically deliver, so say no to fast food and hello to the good, wholesome stuff.
The Catch: The restaurant list is not as extensive as you would hope for it to be. However, we have spotted some secret menu items on there, you will not find these dishes on other menus.
The Catch: There is a sevendirham delivery fee, but hey, eating from your favourite Downtown eatery has to come at a price – right?
FOODONCLICK
This app is similar to the others, but with a fun twist. If you have got some time to browse, you can spot plenty of offers and know what people are ordering, in real time.
TALABAT
This app is good at making you order and this is mainly because of the offers. With occasional discount coupons of up to 50% and offers all year round, you can get a full meal for much less than you normally would. The Catch: Read the fine print. Offers can be valid only during weekdays or for a minimum amount. You will always find some amazing offers though. 80 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
UBER EATS
The Catch: This app always seems to take up more of our time, maybe it is because it is so much fun to browse?
Everybody is raving about how fast Uber Eats is. There is just something about using the brand we have known to drive us around town for so long to order food.
The Catch: The app often has trouble finding your address in Dubai. Once you get your area in, get ready to browse their varied list of restaurants and cafes.

HEALTH HEALTHY HACKS FOR AFTER-SCHOOL SNACKS
As soon as they get back from school, children will grab any snack they can find. If all they can see are chips and cookies, this is what they will have. Here are some ways to make quick, fun snacks for the kids:
Pair pita and hummus
Make it cheesy
Take advantage of all of the shapes, sizes and textures different types of cheese can offer. For example, you can complement herbed cheese with fruits like grapes to make beautiful flowers and ‘toy’ cars.
Butter it up
Peanut butter is packed with protein, an essential nutrient for growing children. Spread it over stacked graham crackers and strawberries or squish it between apple slices for a fun sandwich
Pop, pop, pop
Nutritionists have been constantly telling us: Popcorn is not evil, it just has bad PR. We often associate the snack with unhealthy movie time eats, but popping some popcorn – preferably organic – with some olive oil is an easy hack to one of the yummiest snacks. 82 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Pita and hummus are not just for adults! Make this famous snack more child-friendly by toasting the pita, cutting it into smaller strips and adding a bit of hummus on the side in an emptied fun egg.
Mix a power trail
Trail mixes are fun to eat and can be packed with healthy ingredients; choose two power foods, say pistachios and berries, and roast them in the oven with a bit of agave syrup.
Ditch the candy bar
So the kids want chocolate? Smooth chocolate spread onto a rice cracker for a light, yummy snack.
Bake your own pizza
Fast food gives pizza a bad name, but the popular favourite can be a great option if the right ingredients are used. Why not make a whole-wheat crust and add wholesome toppings like broccoli, arugula and fresh tomatoes?

Y H F T A L T A E HDo Your Kids Need Them?S
Low-fat diets have always been very popular, also chosen by most parents for their children. To maintain a healthy weight, we automatically think fats, but what about healthy fats? Healthy fats supply nutrients which are essential for growth and energy as well as the absorption and metabolism of some nutrients. When you limit your child’s fat intake, you may be depriving them of essential nutrients. Many low-fat diets are low in zinc and vitamin E. Zinc is essential for growth and the proper functioning of the immune system. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant which can help protect against disease.
vaWhen children are eating a low-fat diet, they typically eat more high sugar and starch carbohydrates, which can lead to blood sugar problems and decreased immunity.
TYPES OF FATS Alert!!
1
SATURATED FATS
are considered less healthy types of fat as they raise blood cholesterol and can increase the risk of heart disease.
These are the types of foods that you should try to limit:
2
POLYUNSATURATED FATS
are better for the body as they can help reduce blood cholesterol, especially when your child’s intake of saturated fats is low. Foods that contain polyunsaturated fats include sunflower oils, fish, legumes, nuts and seeds.
84 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
• Salami • Sausage rolls • Potato chips • Hamburger, pizza (takeaway) • Milk chocolate • Cheese and cream-based sauces • Chicken with the skin on
3
MONOUNSATURATED FATS
can lower blood cholesterol if meals and snacks are also low in saturated fat. Such fats are found in canola and olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds.
4
TRANS FATS
Found in some pastries, biscuits and fast foods, trans fats are unsaturated fats which behave similarly to saturated fats in the body because of their chemical shape. They can be found naturally occurring in some foods or in processed foods. When choosing packaged foods, look for those lower in saturated fat and minimal to zero trans fats. Avoid foods that contain ‘hydrogenated oils’ or ‘partially hydrogenated vegetable oils’ in the ingredient list.
NOURISH YOUR CHILD WITH EVERY MEAL:
• Choose low-fat dairy products and lean meats • Serve raw vegetables with homemade dip • Dress salads in homemade dressing • Deep-fried foods • Keep ‘sometimes’ foods like ice cream, cakes, biscuits, chocolates and lollies to a minimum
HOW DO I ENCOURAGE MY CHILDREN TO EAT WELL? • Avoid placing restrictions on food as these may lead to eating disorders later on. Instead, try to make sure they taste and love nutritional foods early on. • Look at your child’s meals over a two-week period rather than day by day. This will help you put things into perspective and not focus only on the bad parts. • Keep healthy food at hand. If the crisps are easier to reach for than those fruits and veggies buried down in the fridge, what would you expect the children to reach for? • Tie every food to something your child cares about. Rather than labelling something as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, tell them about how lean protein will keep them strong for sports or antioxidants will make their hair shiny. • Praise healthy choices and do not nag about unhealthy ones. Taking things slow is always a better approach.

You and your kids are doing your best and tomorrow is always another day, so relax and enjoy every meal and bite. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2017

The Easiest Way to Lose
Weight Walking Off the Kilos
Our grandmas have always been telling us that walking is the best – and easiest – way to shed off any extra pounds. If you are like most mums, you probably do plenty of it without even realising it. Here is how walking can help you get in shape, especially after giving birth:
1 2 3 4
The number of calories you burn through walking is determined by your body weight and walking pace. On average, if you walk at a pace of 4 miles per hour (a common pace) you can burn roughly 400 calories per hour. Walking is the perfect workout for pregnant women. Swap days, shorten your walks or even skip them occasionally according to how you feel. You can also walk for short intervals throughout the day.
During the hardest part of your workout, you should be able to converse without gasping for breath, though not with complete ease either.
You can walk with the kids, just make sure they keep busy. Let them blow bubbles, draw arrows on the sidewalk or have a scavenger hunt in the middle of which you stop for a snack.

FEEL LIKE DITCHING YOUR DIET?
It is probably 3:33 pm…
Midnight cravings? Forget that! Experts now believe that 3:33 pm is the precise time of day when dieters are most likely to give in to temptation and ditch their diet. 90 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
After interviewing over 750 failed dieters in the UAE, researchers from New Atkins Lifestyle insist this is the time when dieters are at the highest risk of straying from their healthy eating regime because of a number of different factors including stress, boredom and a midafternoon dip in energy.
They discovered that the majority of people (51%) broke their diets mid-afternoon, compared to 18% in the morning and 31% late at night.
Why?
• 29% blamed temptation from their friends, colleagues and family • The rest said emotional distress, hunger and a busy lifestyle had led to comfort eating
So, what are you usually doing at 3:33 pm? Are you making lunch, picking up the kids or still at work?
The Five-Point Plan
R
1. Eat a healthy breakfast 2. Spread your calorie intake across the day 3. Avoid sugary snacks if you experience an energy dip 4. Stop using food as an emotional crutch 5. Eat the right kind of lunch, high in protein and complex carbs
EVIEW
Other reasons your diet may not be working; you are:
• Going crazy counting calories. Remember, you need to eat, just try to keep it balanced and do not forget to exercise.
• Not monitoring your hunger cues. On a scale of one to ten, how hungry are you? Eat only when hungry and stop before you are stuffed. • Forgetting to watch the clock. Eat every three to four hours to keep blood sugar levels steady and stay full. • Rushing into the diet. Go slow losing one or two pounds per week and even slower if you are breastfeeding.
Natural Elements Spa & Fitness Centre Located at the massive Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Natural Elements Spa & Fitness Centre just feels like the perfect place to hide away from the kids and relax on a good Friday morning. Ideal for emotionally-exhausted souls, their Kundalini Back Massage is a nurturing treatment with an extraordinarily restorative effect on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

Breast Cancer and The Mother-Daughter Relationship By Sarah Whitehead 92 | JANUARY 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

It will never be easy to hear that you or a loved one have been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease.
No matter how many stories you have read or how much you think you know about an illness, nothing can prepare for you that moment when the doctor officially calls it. Head of psychology at the Abu Dhabi-based American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology Dr Susan Partridge tells us that this is the reality for 170 women and their families every year in the emirate who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, with the advancements in biomedical care, 98% of people diagnosed with cancer can survive if it is detected early. However, the psychological aspect of cancer care can often be overlooked.
FAMILY MATTERS
When Dubai-based writer and breast cancer survivor Umaima Tinwala was first diagnosed, her first thoughts were of her father, sister and daughter. She had experienced both sides as her mother had died of ovarian cancer not long before. Her father dedicated his life to what was remaining of her mother’s and, when Umaima was diagnosed, the last thing she wanted was for him to spend more time in hospitals with her. Even of more concern was how she would approach her daughter with the news. Dr Partridge explains that a family member’s psychological distress can be as severe as that of the patient, with a lingering fear of losing their loved ones and seeing them suffer. Having been on the other side, Umaima knew very well what the future held for her loved ones.
HOW TO COPE
Considering the psychological effect of such news on both the patient and their family, Dr Partridge says that good communication is an essential part of positive coping. “Accepting that some parts of life will carry on as normal while others will need to change is a crucial step in accepting the reality of what is happening,” she explains.
Although her daughter was only nine-years-old at the time she was diagnosed, Umaima decided to take the more open approach with her. “I reassured her that I was going to be ok, that I was not going to die on her. I also made her part of it by telling her that I needed her support, that she needed to give me time to recover and heal before we can get back to normal life.”
Umaima’s open approach was not only helpful to her daughter, but it helped her mentally too, “I did not have to face the guilt of being sick and not being able to take care of her. She became a part of my treatment.”
THE UNRECOGNISED NEED
Dr Partridge explained that numerous cancer survivors and their caregivers in the US report that cancer care providers fail to understand their psychosocial needs and generally did not consider psychosocial support to be an integral part of quality cancer care. However, there is plenty of research to suggest that this is indeed an integral part of a cancer patient’s well-being and recovery.
“Hospital staff should be trained on psychological needs as well. While nurses are generally more helpful, doctors can sometimes be indifferent, inattentive and egotistic, which is horrible for the patient,” says Umaima. To make psychosocial support part of oncology services, Dr Partridge says that a lot more needs to be done in terms of mental health screening, referral and strategic planning. However, with the UAE’s commitment to continuous advancements in the health sector, this reality may not be so far away.
Umaima says, in her case, reality has been better than dreams: “Our relationship is much better now, we are more like friends. All of the time I spent at home meant that we got to talk a lot more and became closer. She is fiercely protective of me, which is incredible.” MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2017 | 93

WHY COW’S MILK?
• Milk is a rich source of calcium, which builds strong bones and teeth, and helps regulate blood clotting and muscle control. • It is also one of the few sources of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium and is crucial for bone growth.
• Milk also provides protein for growth and carbohydrates to give your child the energy they need all day. • The cow’s milk in cow’s milk-based formula is safe for babies.
• Until your child is two, give them whole milk as they need the fat for nerve and brain development. If your child’s gaining weight too quickly for their height, your paediatrician may recommend switching to low-fat milk before the age of two. • If you choose to give your children this type of milk, make sure it is pasteurised.

THE CASE AGAINST COW’S MILK
HOW MUCH MILK SHOULD I GIVE MY CHILD?
• Cow’s milk should not be given to babies younger than one because it does not provide enough of the necessary nutrients.
2-3 YEARS OLD
• It is difficult for babies to digest the protein and fat in cow’s milk. • Some children may have a milk allergy, in which case the milk would cause belly pain or cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
4-8 YEARS OLD
• However, only about 1 to 3% of children under the age of one have a milk allergy. It is even less common in children who are older than one to three years. • Cow’s milk protein can irritate the lining of the digestive system, leading to blood in stool.
• Harvard studies have shown that the effect of milk on bone health has been overhyped. Exercise and body mass index were found to have a much more impactful effect.
9+ YEARS OLD
• Flavoured milk has extremely high amounts of sugar, so you have to decide whether it is worth the trade-off for the nutrients, especially if your child hates plain milk.

10 WAYS 1
TO MAKE BABY SMILE
Forget surprises: Babies love not knowing what will happen next. Singing their favourite lullaby every day after their regular nightly cuddle will always put a smile on their face.
2
Play ‘pass the cookie’: Put a cookie in your mouth, lean towards baby, let them grab the other end of it, then take the biscuit back into your mouth. The back and forth will make them giggle.
3
Peek-a-Boo: I see you! Hide behind furniture, a blanket or even your hands. This is an international baby favourite which will never cease to exist.
4
Blowing raspberries: Babies crave love and touch. Blowing raspberries on their little belly or hands will put a smile on their face in no time.
5
Nibbles: Probably for the same reason, baby will love it if you nibble on their hands, feet or neck.

6 7
Crawling race: Turn a musical toy on and ask baby to race and find it. Babies love crawling quickly towards their goal.
Messy crafts: Bring out the paint or blow some bubbles. Babies love making a mess and a water-based mess outside of bath time is a known favourite.
8
We have guests! Unfamiliar faces are babies’ happiness. They may be looking at you all day, but bring an older sibling or daddy who has just come from work and they will be overjoyed.
9
Look at me: Baby also loves looking at you. Get into their field of vision and smile, it is a thrill they will love to experience.
10
A good stretch: We love stretching and so does baby: With your baby on their back on a blanket, gently extend their left leg and right arm out from their body. Next, hug their right knee up to their chest and gently move it toward their left side. Repeat the moves with the opposite limbs.
