Editor’s Note It’s all about our children. When it comes to protecting them and ensuring support for their right to safety, shelter, healthcare and education, the UAE spares no efforts.
Dubai’s call to donate books to refugee children. Adopting the Reading Nation campaign, they’ve supported a drive to provided five million books to children around the world.
Now, and for the first time, anyone in contact with a child – from parents and teachers to doctors and nurses – can be held accountable for causing harm, and is legally obliged to report cases of suspected abuse. The new child protection law, which came into effect last month, has been making international headlines and quickly became the local parenting world’s hot topic.
UAE children are also being educated on good values and habits. Thousands of schoolchildren have been shown the dangers of playing with fireworks as part of a safety campaign. In Dubai Police’s Stop! Stay Safe, police officers and Dubai’s ambulance service visited malls, schools and community groups to spread the message.
Before the summer holidays, schools across Dubai have answered HH Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of

TRADITIONAL PLAY OVER TABLETS AND
Touchscreens
Society has become obsessed with consumer electronics, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that today’s children are so ‘tech-savvy’; most toddlers prefer screens over teddy bears and they have no problem swiping and tapping on their tablets, which they’d have learnt to master before they could even recite the alphabet!

eing hooked on innovation is good, but getting addicted to electronic gadgets is another story, especially when it concerns children. While there may be some who would argue that there’s no definitive study which cites the harmful effects of technology over younger children, as parents, we’ll always be concerned over the possible effects of touchscreens and videos over our little ones, especially during the crucial stages of learning and development.
❝ ❝ Don’t forget to make games out of household
chores – not only will these instill the value of helpfulness and responsibility in them, they’re also powerful outlets which promote positive development in all sorts of areas!”
Modern gadgets and children The good old childhood days as we know them were filled with games, read-aloud sessions, outdoor play, riding bikes, hide and seek, playing freeze tag and a lot more – activities which have now become mere trips down memory lane. Children moved a lot and they were creative with their hands and imaginations, only until technology took a hold of most of their daily lives. Sure, it wouldn’t do any harm to be technologically-savvy in this ultramodern age, but there’s no denying the fact that there are adverse effects to the excessive usage of media among children which have been wellstudied throughout the years. Some studies have found that when children were overexposed to technology, they became more at risk of developing intellectual and learning disabilities, a shorter attention span, as well as other problematic behaviours. Experts agree that early brain development is determined by environmental stimuli (or lack thereof ), so excessive virtual world interactions – without the appropriate sensory experiences to learn things – would surely hamper the progress of knowledge. There are also concerns regarding the effects of an addiction to technology on children’s health and well-being.
12 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle at an early age are major factors which tend to contribute to a rise in childhood obesity rates. Screen-addicted children are also likely to develop poor eyesight at an early age, while delayed bedtimes caused by an obsession with gadgets can lead to sleep deprivation. The list could go on… Tech detox tips for the family Understandably, the ubiquity of handheld devices and electronics in today’s society makes it difficult for parents to completely ban children kids from using technology. It’s inevitable: A child must learn to use computers and tablets in order to develop some kind of technological proficiency to prepare them for the academic demands awaiting them at school. So what’s a parent to do? The key is to make face-to-face interaction and “unplugged” play the highest priority for families.
Spending quality time with your children will definitely bring them away from screen and help them develop behaviours which immensely contribute to their growth and wellbeing. There are plenty of ways to break the tech-gadget habit of children. Parents can slow their busy schedules down a bit and increase playtime. Engaging them in playful surprises and joining in pretend play helps encourage kids’ creativity and imagination. One of the best ways to encourage imaginative play is to offer appropriate props and items which would help stir your child’s imagination including role-play toy sets and mock adult-life experiences. Instil in them the love of reading by giving them age-appropriate books. This will surely encourage the development of language skills, stimulate the development of brain connections and boost their cognitive skills and creativity. You can also stock up on traditional toys which promote thought and interaction: blocks, pull toys, musical boxes, rattles and so on, plus puzzles and other educational toys which promote problem-solving skills. Outdoor play, country walks, bike rides and trips to the park are also all-time favourites, especially since they encourage a lot of healthy, free movement. Don’t forget to make games out of household chores – not only will these instill the value of helpfulness and responsibility in them, they’re also powerful outlets which promote positive development in all sorts of areas! Simple tasks like folding the laundry, setting the table and putting away groceries can get so much fun when everyone in the family is involved. The bottom line is, then and now, active interaction and family togetherness have had a positive impact on children and that is precisely what they need in order to learn and grow.

T
eaching children how to use technology in a positive way may be imperative given the demands they would face later in life. However, can kindles, iPads and tablets replace books? Does grabbing a screen and tapping away even come close to page-turning excitement?
❝ ❝ “I know of many pleasures to owning or reading a book, quite apart from exploring and enjoying its contents.”
The good ol’ days “There was a teacher who would wander out to supervise playtime in the school playground, hugging a book to her chest. She would say: ‘I’ve got such a lovely story here. Don’t you want to know what it is?’ and then, eyes merry and bright, she would tease by just showing a tiny part of the cover – a quick flash or a small corner,” says Zandra Johnson, director of Fairytale Furniture Ltd. which produces a range of character-based children’s chairs each with a story book to inspire imaginative play. “I know of many pleasures to owning or reading a book, quite apart from exploring and enjoying its contents. The pleasure of the titles, some so enticing and intriguing, as tantalising as a riddle. Also, the design of the cover, the tactile pleasure of holding the book in your hand feeling the texture of the cover, the thickness of the paper and the beauty of the neat rows of type covering each page,” Johnson adds. The pleasure of holding a book and flipping through its pages may, however, appeal to the older generations more. As a parent or grandparent, settling with a child on lap to read together, to share a book where you both hold and

Early studies have also found that interactive media, such as eBooks and learn-to-read applications, can be useful in teaching vocabulary and reading comprehension, but only in children who are of a preschool-age or older. “Unfortunately, these devices may replace hands-on activities, which are important for the development of sensory motor and visual-motor skills necessary for the learning and application of math and science. This is because when they’re using touchscreens, they’re not building up the muscles needed for writing,” adds Al Ka’abi.

turn the pages back and forth is such a joy. Can you really replicate that by looking at the small tablet of an eBook? The science behind it all With the advent of technological alternatives to traditional reading, kindles, tablets, eReaders and eBooks have become popular. Our children have significant tendencies to use them as an alternative to the paper book, but will these have an impact on their future and the way they learn? “Recent studies have revealed reading from kindles or tablets can lead to lower levels of sleepiness in comparison with reading from a
A teacher or parent should be present to assist the child in grasping the overall concepts so they don’t get stuck on the exciting graphics and fast pace of a digitised reading program. As for the paper book, it has extra advantages including its relative mobility and the fact that it doesn’t depend on electricity, which means it can be used anywhere. For some, whatever our children prefer to read on, as long as they get to read, it’s a win. For others, traditional is the way to go. While paper books may still hold their benefits, keeping up with technology means that our children may occasionally need their digital reads. Also, have you ever tried snatching an iPad from of a toddler’s hands?

As the support system grew year on year, Safia came to the realization that many parents were in the same situation as her, struggling to get their child the attention they needed in mainstream schooling in Dubai. This motivation led her to form the SNF institute in 2007 with the support of parents of children with special needs. SNF is a development centre which offers personalised and professional care for young adults with special needs. Committed to preparing young adults with special needs for integration into mainstream society and future inclusion in the workforce, SNF offers a range of training and development programmes which include behaviour modification, speech therapy, special education, reading and writing, art and computer and recreational activities. Realising how the specific needs of special needs students were often missed or not prioritised in traditional schooling, Safia made it her mission to play an active role in equipping these students with the necessary skills to join the workforce and become active members of society. In her role as founder and director of the SNF centre and a mother of a special needs young adult, Safia has dedicated herself to promoting independence and confidence among young adults in the special needs community in order to help them become self-sufficient both personally and professionally. Gentle Guidance
THE POWER OF POSITIVE PARENTING
yy By Dalia Abu Alam Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor
Parenting is more than raising children, they need to listen to you and follow your guidance. It’s about developing personality and preparing children for the life ahead of them.
26 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
FAMILY & PARENTHOOD Raising children positively is a very challenging job. It’s like any other job which requires training and practice, where parents need to challenge themselves and look at the situation from different perspectives, their children’s and their own. Practicing, learning and developing parenting skills can help parents become the best they wish to be. Here is an example from a mother facing day-to-day challenges with her son, with a simple few steps to demonstrate positive behaviour in
the stressful moments we often face with our children:
What we can do and how should we behave positively in these situations?
A mother was picking her son up from nursery; the boy asks: “Can I go to the playground?”
1 Give yourself a few seconds to think before you answer your child.
The mother replies: “Ok, but only for 5 minutes as we can’t stay long. I have many things to do, I don’t have the time to stay and play for more than that.” On their way home, the child asks his mum if he could eat some McDonald’s. The mother refuses and says: “No, we can’t have burger now, enough!” When they’re at home, the boy starts to play in the house and drops a vase by mistake. The mother says: “Stop destroying furniture around the house!” These were the two hours the mother spent with her son after picking him up from school: What message did the child receive in these three situations? His mother has approved for him to play in the playground, but not for so long as she had other priorities (this is not what the mother said, this was the message understood by the child). His mother refused to buy him McDonald’s without considering or understanding his request. “Stop destroying the house.” I’m a destroyer: this will be the child’s belief about himself, especially if it’s repeated frequently. He’ll begin to drop and destroy things, but this time he’ll do it intentionally. Small comments we say to our children are the reason for their behaviour, stubbornness and negative attitude. Not only that, but they shape their beliefs and personalities.
2 If you said any negative comments, ask yourself: if you were in your child’s place, what would you have liked to hear from your parents? Judge yourself as a parent and change your comments. 3 Train yourself to say the same message, but positively. Here are other suggestions for that same example: 1 In the playground, she could have said: “Ok, let’s play together for 5 minutes.” When it’s time to go: “Can we leave now dear as we need to get going?” When you consider your child’s priorities without conditions he’ll be able to listen to you. 2 In the McDonald’s situation, the mother could have replied: “Oh, I know you love burger, but I’m sorry we can’t have it now. When we go home, we can order.” Ensure to stick to your promise when you go home. Keep your promises to your child so they keep their promises to you. Show them understanding so they can understand you. 3 When the boy dropped the vase, the mother could have said: “I know you didn’t want to break it, but next time can you please be more careful and play with your toys instead? Give them the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. A parent’s positive attitude leads to a child’s positive behaviour.

However, I find it so hard to cook things which I don't like, plus I can be impatient, and finding the time to fit this all in to a weekly routine is difficult. Can you help advise on how I can get around this; are there any cookery classes I can attend for fussy eaters or beginners?”
“Dear Louise, I totally understand that you don’t like certain foods and spices and that you’re struggling with finding the right dishes when eating out. My advice on finding the right places would be to read menus online beforehand. If you can’t find any dish on the menu, then I would suggest you call the restaurant and discuss it with them. From my own personal experience with restaurants in the past, they really try to help and in most times have created a dish for my liking which

Mum...mum...mum. How can I get the kids to ask dad for help insteadf? He can be sitting right next to them and they’ll still come seek me out in the bathroom! This mummy is tired of hearing her name a 1000 times a day. Daddy has two arms and two legs he's good at doing things! I love that they come to me; I want to be there for them and help them as much as possible. I just need some help when they all gang up on me at once. I'm not superwoman!”
“Dear Korena,
what to do.
It’s very good you’re bringing a situation like this up as it’s one which many will recognise themselves in, maybe in different ways. They want to take control of their own lives, but how? You’ve already come very far; you see what's happening and you're asking for help.
The answer is to start working out what’s inside! In this inside gym, you train the art of loving yourself to work on your self-esteem, selfimage and self-respect. You’ll grow and become a peaceful, safe and a secure mother and wife who loves herself. When doing this, you’ill allow yourself to put boundaries for you and your family. When you make a change from the inside, your children, husband and environment will follow.
Awareness is step number one, while thinking about how you want your life to be is step two. Step three is how to proceed and
A life coach is a really good investment; it’ll benefit the whole family now and in the future. You’re a role model for your children, the way you are and live they’ll become; you’re a very wise woman who just needs to believe in herself.

Janine Plum Founder, Desert Roses Accessories “As a locally-based start-up, when thinking about expansion, how does one go about penetrating the market locally and further into the GCC and surrounding areas. What key steps would you advise I take in order to reach retailers outside of Dubai? While I have a growing presence in Dubai with locally-based retailers, I’m struggling to reach bigger brands and convince them that there are many good quality, locally-produced products.”
“Dear Janine, 20 steps to a new market: 1 Begin with a catchy media campaign. 2 Run a colourful front page ad on a local paper in the city you’re now targeting. 3 Mention phrases such as “launch conference/event”. 34 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

8 Prepare a fun presentation, but not longer than 30 minutes. 9 Get a good speaker. 10 Ensure that the that guests are there for a maximum duration of two hours (including presentation). 11 Prepare gifts for the audience (mention it on the ad). 12 Remember that you’re promoting your product and brand, and that partnerships of any form are very much welcome. 13 A prospective partner might actually save you the trouble of actually setting up a physical branch. You’ll be surprised as to how many existing businesses have the premises, display, manpower and local experience, and are hungry for a good product. 14 Set a budget for the program and do it at least three times. 15 Assign an active team member to the task. 16 Name the project. 17 Set a date. 18 Put it on your drawing board. 19 Consider your first month’s rent there already. 20 Start and all the best!

ALL ABOUT Stretch Marks What are they? Believe it or not, many women still get confused when they hear this term. Is it enough to know they just don’t look pretty? Not really, because stretch marks can take on various forms.
40 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
BODY & SOUL
Stretch marks typically appear as bands of parallel lines on your skin. These lines are a different colour and texture than your normal skin, and they range from purple to bright pink to light grey. When you touch stretch marks with your fingers, you might feel a slight ridge or indentation on your skin. Sometimes, stretch marks feel itchy or sore.
❝ ❝You can have them just about anywhere, but they’re most common on your stomach, breasts, upper arms, thighs and buttocks."
When do they appear? Commonly during or after pregnancy, hence the relevancy of the topic to every mother and mother-to-be out there. Also, after any sudden changes in weight. Stretch marks are not typically dangerous and often disappear over time.
Are you at risk? The factors include: • being a woman • being Caucasian (having pale skin) • having a family history of stretch marks • being pregnant
Dr Marwa El Badawy Specialist Dermatologist, Al Zahra Hospital
Stretch marks, or Stria Gravidarum (SG) during pregnancy, are caused by the mechanical stretching of the skin in association with hormonal factors. They tend to occur in areas of maximum skin stretching. It is estimated that up to 90% of pregnant women develop stretch marks. The risk factors for their development include family history, race, skin type, birthweight, baseline Body Mass Index (BMI), age, weight gain and poor nutrition.
Where do they appear? You can have them just about anywhere, but they’re most common on your stomach, breasts, upper arms, thighs and buttocks.
Doctor’s Orders
• having a history of delivering large babies or twins
• being overweight • undergoing dramatic weight loss or gain
• using corticosteroid medications What are the causes? Stretch marks were found to be a result of, just that, the skin stretching in addition to having too much cortisone in your body, which makes the skin lose its elasticity. Cortisone is a hormone which is naturally produced by adrenal gland.
Stretch marks are common when: • The tugging and stretching during pregnancy causes the skin to stretch
• Some corticosteroid creams, lotions and pills may decrease the skin’s elasticity • Adrenal gland disorders including Cushing’s, Marfan and the EhlersDanlos syndromes alter cortisone levels
Prevention and early treatment of red stria show better results. Once they become white, they can only be reduced, but not completely treated. Therefore, prevention and early treatment are the best ways to manage them. Using moisturising cream and/or lotion regularly at least twice daily with a gentle massage helps maintain water content in the skin of the abdominal wall. Using products containing centella, bitter almond oil and hyaluronic acid are helpful for that purpose. Cocoa butter and olive oil aren’t effective for preventing SG or reducing the severity of lesions. There’s no conclusive treatment. However, Tretinoin-containing creams and gels hold promise for reducing the severity of new-onset SG, but their use is limited during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Other modalities such as microneedling, microdermabrasion, laser and radiofrequency help reduce the size of SG and improve the general appearance of the skin. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JULY 2016 | 41
FOR YOU What are the stages in the development of stretch marks?
When do stretch marks form?
1-3 3-6 6-9 months months months
Stage 1: Early stretch marks will appear pale in colour, and may also be itchy. The skin immediately around the stretch marks may also look flattened and thin.
While stretch marks generally become visible during the last trimester of pregnancy (around the sixth or seventh month), some women will start to see them forming as soon as their bellies start growing. Most lighter-skinned women tend to develop pinkish stretch marks, whereas darker-skinned women tend to have stretch marks that are lighter than the surrounding skin.
Stage 2: Gradually, the stretch marks will enlarge in length and width and become darker and more pronounced. Stage 3: Once the stretch marks have matured and when the skin is no longer under tension, they will start to fade and become paler. They may also appear slightly depressed and irregular in shape or length.
It is estimated that up to 90% of women are prone to developing stretch marks in pregnancy. In studies conducted over the years, the likelihood of developing them has been found to vary according to:

However, the star claims a sense of humour has also helped her get through motherhood, a piece of advice her mother had given her at the age of eight.
Lisa Actress Lisa Kudrow’s motherhood experience was anything but simple. How has it changed her? She’s become more cautious and fearful, she says, upon finding out that the stakes were very high and that being a mother didn’t come with its handbook. 46 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
MOTHERHOOD
Jennifer Actress Jennifer Garner seems to always exude happiness, but she claims she’d get grumpy when her mother would ask her to eat anything but peanut butter sandwiches. The best advice she’d ever given her? Eat your veggies…
Felicity Gwyneth
For Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman motherhood has mostly been wonderful, but she also felt like it could often get boring – apparently, that’s one of the things they never tell you.
Shakespeare in Love Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother is part of the same industry, and the actress claims culture has been a big part of her upbringing. Bookmarks A CERTAIN AGE
A Novel - By Beatriz Williams Full of the glamour, wit and delicious twists that are the hallmarks of Beatriz Williams’ fiction and alternating between Sophie’s spirited voice and Theresa’s vibrant timbre, A Certain Age is a beguiling reinterpretation of Richard Strauss’s comic opera Der Rosenkavalier, set against the sweeping decadence of Gatsby’s New York.
THE MANDIBLES A Family, 2029-2047 By Lionel Shriver
With dry wit and psychological acuity, this near-future novel explores the aftershocks of an economically devastating U.S. sovereign debt default on four generations of a onceprosperous American family. Down-to-earth and perfectly realistic in scale, this isn’t an over-the-top Blade Runner tale. It’s not science fiction. The Mandibles is about money. Thus it is necessarily about bitterness, rivalry, and selfishness, also about surreal generosity, sacrifice and transformative adaptation to changing circumstances.

S
he’s currently CEO of the everpopular Ladybird Nursery. A purpose-built Ladybird Early Learning Centre is currently under construction, scheduled to open this month. yyCongratulations on the nursery! What vision are you looking to pursue and how different will it be from other nurseries in Dubai? Thanks! Ladybird Early Learning Centre is on track to become the first LEED gold-certified early learning centre in the Middle East due to its ‘green’ building initiatives. Several nurseries in the UAE are based in villas which were originally made for residential purposes and have now been converted into nurseries. However, Ladybird Early Learning Centre is a purpose-built, ground-floor-only facility which has been thoughtfully designed and constructed with environmental sustainability, reduction of carbon footprint and safety firmly in mind. For example, throughout the building process, 25% of the nursery’s construction material was recycled, with 25% of the actual construction material itself having been imported within an 800 km radius, thereby saving on carbon emissions. This is in addition to more green policies we have been pursuing. Our young pupils are the planet’s custodians of tomorrow, so it’s essential to teach them the importance of conserving resources, especially water in a location such as Dubai. yyChildhood education seems like a venture which would come naturally to a mother; what would you advise mums who are looking to pursue the same? Anybody pursuing a career in early years ‘education, whether it be as an owner or a professional, needs to be passionate about the field. If financial returns are a
consideration in making the decision, I’d advise against entering this field. Whether a mother or not, one must appreciate that the field of early years’ education is a serious responsibility and, therefore, really needs to be dedicated and committed. yyHow have your children inspired your career? My children have played a crucial role my pursuit of my dreams at Ladybird. Both of them went to nurseries which are now part of the Ladybird Nursery chain in Dubai. Seeing the difference that a Ladybird education made for my children has prompted me to acquire the nursery from the founder in 2007. In fact, my younger son’s teacher in 2005, Priscilla Palmer, is the current principal of our Jumeirah branch and I think of him every time I see her! yyWhich aspects of your children’s education made you keen on seeking to manage a nursery of your own?
Both my children have been to nurseries which were greatly influenced by the Montessori philosophy and I was, and still am, a great believer in the its benefits. I am a qualified Montessori teacher and love the Montessori ethos of treating each child as an individual. When I was able to see first-hand the benefits that a Ladybird education had on my children’s natural development, it was my dream to own the nursery one day and continue running it based on the same ethos on which it was founded in 1996. yyWould you advise mothers to go after their career dreams or stay home to take care of the children? I would advise mothers that the choices they are faced with when it comes to pursuing a career or staying at home are not going to be easy ones. There’s no right answer and any choice made in this regard is a choice we should all respect. Being a mother is in itself is a tremendous achievement for any woman!

MUMS IN BUSINESS
W
ith all of the beauty-dedicated venues around town, women in Dubai tend to find that one place they’re happy to call their “beauty home” and stick to it. The Cure Beauty Spa has amassed its own following. Founded 13 years ago, it has become “the cure” to many mothers’ beauty woes. Nadia Ivanova is the mother behind it all. Mother, Baby & Child interviews her for a look into life with a 3-year-old, a charity fund, the Russian Mums in Dubai community group and bringing The Cure to Dubai. yyYour first entrepreneurial venture was at the age of 19! How did you spot and foster such skills even before as a child? Since I was a child, my mum has always said I had that streak. I personally believe it’s those who like challenges who make it to being business owners, those who like solving puzzles and mathematical equations from a young age. yyHow did the idea behind The Cure come about and what did it take to turn it into a reality? I sold a beautiful car, bought a minivan and drove my staff to and from work. I invested all of the money I had and loaned the rest from my father and my now husband, Richard, both of whom were very supportive, but were not going to just give me the money to start a business. I did all the PRO, admin and the accounting work myself and worked seven days a week. After about a year, I could no longer physically cope with all that and closed The Cure on Fridays, but then, suddenly, as if all at the same time and out of nowhere, rave reviews started coming in from magazines and private conversations and one day I realised I’d made enough money to hire help. In 2005, I set up another business with one of The Cure’s regulars who had become a friend. It’s been a beautiful journey.
yyHow did you manage to make it unique given all of the beauty businesses in town? I never thought of The Cure as simply ‘a business’. It’s always been a refuge, somewhat of a temple for me. I still look at it as a gift from God, an opportunity to change people’s lives – substantially for the people who work for me, casually and seemingly insignificantly – for people who come for what we offer. yyHow do you find the time to run the business, pursue charitable initiatives and take care of the kids? By planning and prioritising. Also, by being ruthless with some of the
Fun Bits • Guilty pleasure: Long breakfasts with girlfriends and members of our Russian Mums group • Pet peeve: People not washing their hands in bathrooms • Beauty obsession: I love Spanish massages for the face. They’re like mini facelifts with the added value of pampering • Fashion must-have: I love the latest shoe trend with the comfy, sturdy heel
ideas and wishes, simply letting them go. If they come back, they’re worth considering, investing into. If they don’t, they may be good for someone else, but not for me. I’ve also learnt not to be a perfectionist. This took a painful while, but now I know it has helped me become happier and get more (of the important) things done. Now, if I only have ten minutes to play with my son, I’ll use them and do my best with those ten minutes given the circumstances and with the resources I have at the time. I don’t wait for the perfect time and place anymore. This is how I accepted the challenge of heading a charitable foundation. As long as I do what I can, whenever I can do it, it can be so much more than what I’d ever expected it to be. yyWhat’s the most important piece of advice you’ve ever received and who did it come from? I was very lucky to have had very kind, intelligent parents. The best advice always came from them and my husband. I’ve collected so much from those three, I could write a book of quotes. The one that makes most sense to me at this very moment is this: “Always assume.”

LOCALLY BEAUTIFUL
The AIISHA RAMADAN label is the epitome of modern design. The beautifully-crafted garments speak to women across the world. Celebrities such as Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Scherzinger, Christina Aguilera and Ariana Grande have worn the label, which has garnered international popularity for its elegant, yet sultry look. yyYou have won many awards at a young age, how important is it to start young? Just like babies who absorb everything at a young age, starting early in business allows the person to learn a lot more and gives them more time to build success. yyWhen was it as a child that you’ve decided you wanted to go into fashion design? I was 5 years old, playing with my Barbie dolls and stitching their dresses. I was surrounded by boys all year long so the moment I was alone, I channelled my longing for girly activities into drawing and fashion. yyHow can mothers foresee their children’s future and foster their talents? They need to stay alert to their children's behaviour, interests, questions and what they like to watch on TV or YouTube. I like to take the freedom approach: if my daughter wants to draw, I don't like to push her to draw inside the lines. I like her to be herself and be happy. I also like to give her a basic introduction to a variety of activities like reading, swimming, dancing and more. Then, she gets to choose her favourite activity and I'm here to support her.
yy How are you encouraging your daughter to follow her dreams? By being an example for her where no one gets to tell her she "should" do anything. She's growing up to see her mother following her dream with an unstoppable force. yyWhat is it that mothers forget to do when they start a business? Take care of themselves. Rest from time to time and feel good from the inside out.
yyShraadha Kapoor in AIISHA RAMADAN
yyWhy have you chosen the UAE and what does it mean to you to become an entrepreneur here? I was raised here and I consider myself lucky. The UAE has offered me a wide spectrum to be whoever I wanted to be. The lack of fashion direction back in the day has allowed me to have my own with no restrictions. yyTell us about your most proud “this celebrity wore my dress” moment. Ah, several! Jennifer Lopez was massive, but dressing Charlize Theron was a dream come true.
yyCharlize Theron in AIISHA RAMADAN
yyYour designs focus on individuality, freedom of expression, self-acceptance and celebration; how can we celebrate motherhood? Be proud of the human being that you have brought to this life and give them love every moment you get a chance. Nurture that bond between you and your child and understand that every single action you make will impact their lives and shape their personalities. Hug them as much as you can, they're like little kittens depending on you, until you teach them to depend on themselves.

It may feel exciting to share some gossip or critique Susy from Finance’s parenting skills, but that’s not the right way to go. Motherhood is all about support, and there’s no right or wrong when it comes to taking care of your children, so refrain from engaging in any conversation of the sort.

THE BOARDROOM
Making their schedule about the kids A mother will always ensure her children’s needs are being met, but your schedule will have to factor for everything you do, not everything the children do, think of and might need. Make sure you have a good balance in place and remember: your children will thank you for it – you can trust us on this one.
Staying up late With all of the things she has to do, mummy often sleeps late, very late. By the time you get home, handle the chores, take care of the kids’ needs and do all that needs to be done, it’s past 2 am – at least. Sleep is very important for your well-being (we’re probably not the first to tell you) so make sure you get enough.
Redoing everything If it’s done, it’s (probably) done. Don’t keep doing things just because you think they need to be redone. This cycle is pretty much unbreakable and will only lead to disappointments and wasting time and energy over perfectly-complete tasks. Keep refocusing your energy and attention on what’s needed the most.
Comparing themselves to other mums Motherhood isn’t a competition. Every mum has a different way of doing things and, just like you avoid being harsh over other mums’ way of doing things, you should be kind to yourself too. Always remember that you’re doing your best given the circumstances.

CAREER
THE BOARDROOM
The gym Don’t get us wrong, we actually love going to the gym. However, for some mothers, the commute and commitment that comes with it may not be that ideal. With society constantly labelling every fitness activity as “the gym”, the pressure can get a bit too high. If you’re not a fan of the gym, try out any other home-based workouts through DVDs, YouTube, etc.
Giving up on ‘me-time’ You need some time for yourself. Don’t feel guilty about going to the spa for a relaxing massage, heading to the salon for a rainbowcolored manicure or spending your Friday (without the kids) with your girlfriends. Go on, you deserve it…
Trying for ‘Mum of the Year’ It’s ok to make mistakes and just as ok to admit it. Be kind to yourself and always remember that your family loves you just the way you are – crazy work weeks and all!
KEEP AN Eye ON THE KIDS With the Wi-Fi IP camera, you can monitor your house in real-time and footage can be saved directly to your smart devices. The camera features connectivity with alarm systems and notifications sent automatically through email, in addition to video conferencing. The display a 3.5 inch HD with built-in speakers and a mic and screen quality ensures there's no colour deviation between indoor and outdoor environments.

DR PATRICK NOEL Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon, The American Surgecenter, Abu Dhabi
yyWhat was the highlight of your career? In December 2012, my experience in the bariatric field was recognised worldwide during the Sleeve Consensus Summit in New York. I was invited by Professor Michel Gagner, the originator of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and one of the world’s leading experts in both minimally invasive and weight loss surgery, to present the largest experience in revision surgery from gastric banding to sleeve gastrectomy. Subsequently, this series was published in Surgical Endoscopy. yyWhat’s your favourite part of the job? It really is a life-transforming procedure. Every aspect of the patient’s life gets affected, be it their health, quality of life, mobility, etc. Furthermore, some women cannot get

pregnant for various health-related issues, but after the procedure they have a chance at conceiving; in fact, the majority do so. I’m really blessed to be in a position where I can directly and positively impact someone’s life. yyWhat was the most emotional on-the-job situation you’ve ever encountered? A couple of years ago, I operated on a 16-year-old Emirati male who’d
dropped out of high school, was bullied, depressed and had no interest in life whatsoever. With our dedicated team approach of psychological and nutritional counselling, along with a very successful procedure, he completely lost all of his excess weight and is back in school studying hard, playing sports, enjoying a social life, etc. like all young men at his age do. The best part is that, because we intervened at a younger age, his recovery was relatively quick and easy with regards to excess skin, internal health issues, etc. yyHow would you describe a typical work day? Busy, busy, busy! My hours are split between consultations and followups in my clinic at The American Surgecenter and the operating room. I’m an early riser as I like to make the most of my day ahead.

STRAIGHT yy By: Dr Nashila Farah Jaffer Chiropractic Physician, Pure European Chiropractic Centre, Dubai
66 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
MOTHER yyHow can mothers make sure that motherhood doesn’t take a toll on their spine? It’s a physical and emotional job! The lifting, bending, running, crouching – and this is just the active part – emotional energy is used and exhausted in most situations, making motherhood a rollercoaster of joy and anxiety. It’s important to take time out every day and do something you enjoy. Exercise and nourishing the body with wholesome foods are both equally as important. Exercise helps release endorphins, the ‘happy hormones’ which keep depression and the ‘baby blues’ at bay.
yyWhat are some of the most common mistakes mothers make when interacting with their children on a daily basis? A recent study has found that 61% of parents suffered from back pain
and over 40% reported that this issue stopped them from playing with their children. Picking up children, especially toddlers, can cause quite a strain on the back. It’s important to make children as independent as possible from an early age. Let them ‘free play’ and find themselves and their own interests. For the older ones, give them tasks, such as making their beds, packing their own lunch boxes, etc. They’ll eventually thrive with the added sense of responsibility.
yyFor working mothers, how can we make sure our offices are ergonomically fit?
maintain posture while sitting for long periods. Breaks should be taken periodically and having lunch is very important and should ideally be taken away from the office.
yyFor pregnant women, what should they look out for the most? During pregnancy, as the body weight increases, there’s a great postural strain on the neck, shoulders and lower back. Maintaining good posture is very important, with the head and shoulders aligned. Listen to your body, pain is the first warning sign, and shouldn’t be ignored.
It’s vital to have a work station, which is conducive to spinal health. Monitors should be set up at eye level and a strong orthopaedic chair should be used in order to

EARLY CHILDHOOD When children have poor posture, it places increased pressure on the muscles, joints and discs within the spine. This can cause early onset disc degeneration which can be difficult to detect until it causes pain or discomfort.

Your child’s instinct for body movement allows their brains to be engaged. A neurological pathway travels from your child’s body balance and movement system to the alert system in the brain, allowing for greater alertness and attention.

KNOWING THE ABCS OF MBC HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF
Metastatic Breast Cancer? 72 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
MOTHER
Women find it much easier to stay informed on the latest scientific findings in the battle against the disease and ways to detect it at an early stage. Breast Cancer Arabia reports that, while there are breast cancer awareness programs in the region, only a few give in-depth information on the disease. As it is, much remains to be said about how the disease develops and spreads in the patient’s body. Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) is a stage IV cancer which spreads outside the breast area and is the most common cause of death among patients with this type of cancer, a serious issue considered to be a taboo in some societies. MBC is breast cancer which has metastasised beyond the breasts to other organs in the body including the lungs, bones, brain or liver. It’s also the most

advanced stage of breast cancer, making it the most critical.
Yet most breast cancer campaigns and awareness movements in the region hardly talk about MBC. How often have you heard of or seen campaigns calling for action on the deadly disease? According to Scientific Publisher BioMed Central Women's Health, there’s a communication void when it comes to support for women with MBC despite the fact that 30% of women with early breast cancer will eventually develop the disease.
The Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention has found that the MENA region had a higher number of advancedstage breast cancer cases than developed countries. For instance, 62% of breast cancer cases in Saudi Arabia are diagnosed as stage III and IV,
Cancer remains a sensitive topic in this region, as many women fear the stigma of breast cancer and hesitate to seek help at the early onset of the disease. More action must be taken to raise awareness and enhance existing knowledge on MBC’s diagnosis and its effects on women’s lives.

The Facts 1 2
MBC is the most advanced stage of breast cancer.
7
Most women diagnosed with MBC have an average of 2-3 more years more to live, but there are women who beat the odds. Many women were able to carry on with longer survival rates and pursue fruitful and meaningful years which have exceeded this rate by far.
8
3
In developed countries, with approximately 30% of women affected by breast cancer, it may progress to MBC.
4
In comparison to Europe or North America, a greater portion of breast cancer cases in the MENA region are at an advanced stage.
5
Treatment for MBC lasts one’s entire lifetime and focuses on control of the disease and quality of life.
6
There are no conclusive statistics for MBC. Each patient and their disease is unique.
While not finding MBC is considered positive for any breast cancer patient, it’s always vital to proceed with regular check-ups as anyone who has undergone an earlier stage of breast cancer is prone to a metastatic recurrence. Women and men (yes, men get breast cancer too!) should stay 74 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Unlike breast cancer, an early detection of MBC doesn’t guarantee a cure. Metastatic breast cancer can occur five, ten or 15 years after a person's original diagnosis and successful treatment check-ups and annual mammograms. Women living with MBC have been largely forgotten in the public discussion on breast cancer.
9
In 2014, the MBC Alliance reported that research funding for MBC accounts for only 7% of total breast cancer research investment.
10
Most countries need further professional capacity building to provide the holistic, multi-disciplinary approach required by MBC patients.
vigilant of their health and seek help immediately upon detecting any symptoms. Living with breast cancer, especially MBC, can be a tumultuous and fearful experience for most women. While October is almost synonymous to breast cancer awareness, there is no focus on
MBC in the region. Therefore, as a part of society and members of the community, we must work together to increase awareness and facilitate access to information on MBC, with the main aim that women who are suffering from the disease feel supported, heard and empowered.

Cooking with the Kids THE DO’S AND DON’TS AND AN EASY RECIPE TO TRY FOR (TRUE) FIRST-TIMERS 82 | JULY 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
COOKING WITH THE KIDS The kitchen is a great place to spend quality time with the little ones. Not only does it help boost their self-confidence, it also helps them develop their palates and learn about nutrition. If you have picky eaters, getting them involved in meal preparation is one of the most effective ways to encourage them to try new food, as kids are more likely to eat food they have helped prepare.
M
any parents wonder at what age children should start getting involved in the kitchen, but truth is they are never too young. Even an 18-monthold would have the necessary motor skills to help out. You can engage them with simple tasks such as washing vegetables and weighing ingredients. Once they are old enough to follow instructions, you can give them more complex tasks. Before you get started, there are a few things you may want to consider. Markette’s Chef Aldo Volpi says: “While cooking with kids, it’s essential to have the process planned in advance.” This could include the type of dishes they like, utensils to be used and, most importantly, allowing ample time. You should use plastic or wooden utensils for safety and make sure long hair is tied back. Social House’s Head Chef, Bijaw Deoli, advises parents to educate their kids on cleanliness. He says: “Teach the little

ones about washing their hands and utensils before using them as they may contain germs.” You should also remind children to keep their fingers out of blenders and beaters, explaining the dangers in advance. While it is fine for children to use beaters, Deoli recommends keeping them on slow speeds. Patience is key. While safety is paramount, it is important to have some fun. Simple yet visually appealing recipes ensure that children are not discouraged from the start.
CHEF VOLPI RECOMMENDS A TRADITIONAL MAC AND CHEESE: “Get the little ones to measure 16 cups of water. Add the water in a large pot over high heat until boiling. Add four cups of short pasta and a tablespoon of salt. Stir to ensure the pasta does not stick. After eight minutes, drain the pasta and set it aside.

Warm one cup of milk in a saucepan on a gentle heat. In the meantime, get your kids to whisk together half a cup of milk and two tablespoon of all-purpose flour until there are no lumps remaining. Now, to make that delicious cheese sauce, add in a handful of grated cheddar cheese, half a teaspoon of salt and quarter of a spoon of powdered mustard to the warming milk. Let your kids stir the sauce on low heat until it thickens. The delicious creamy sauce is now ready to be mixed with your boiled pasta. Let your kids combine the pasta and half of cheese sauce in a large serving bowl, stir to coat the

Add the garlic and rosemary leaves to the tray. • Drizzle with oil, season with sea salt and black pepper, then toss well and spread out in an even layer. • Rub the chicken all over with a pinch of salt and pepper and a drizzle of oil. Stuff the chicken cavity with the whole lemon and the thyme sprigs. • Place the chicken in the tray, on top of the vegetables. • Reduce the oven temperature to 200ºC/400ºF/gas 6, then add the chicken and roast for 45 minutes. • Carefully remove the tray from the oven, use tongs to turn the vegetables over, then spoon any juices from the tray over the chicken. • Return the tray to the oven for a further 30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.
