EDITOR’S NOTE Mothers from all walks of life and their children often take part in Mother, Baby & Child’s monthly cover story photoshoots – as was the case with our June issue. We believe in engaging the community and supporting motherhood on a local level; our goal is to ensure the magazine acts as a mirror for mothers, offering insights and advice on what they’re seeking the most. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with mothers in such way as – while putting together the pieces for stories which we hope would influence and inspire them – we’ve also learnt about their lives and the ways they interact with their children. Amazed at their perseverance, openness, resourcefulness and ability to always
see the big picture, we found that, just as much as we aim to help mothers, they’ve been teaching us the most precious of lessons on motherhood. An extra channel to further facilitate this open communication has been through Marhababy, boxes of joy delivered at no cost to expectant and new mothers’ doorsteps. You can now find our magazine in each and every one of them and it’s our own way of saying to you, mummies: “Thank you for being our inspiration and we’re proud to be part of your magical journeys!” Happy Father’s Day to all of the wonderful husbands out there and wishing you all a ‘Ramadan Karim’.

Wellness
AND BEYOND When it comes to fitness, Rob Donker makes it look so easy. A personal trainer, nutritionist, wellness speaker, multiple award-winning Natural Physique competitor and founder of corporate wellness company Beyond Wellness, Rob’s passion comes across in every move he makes, whether it be on a treadmill at a well-known Dubai gym, working out with the crowds by the beach or through an Instagram post where he raves about the latest health craze.
H
ere, Rob speaks to Mother, Baby & Child about keeping your family healthy, looking out for fitness-related myths and how tree hugging has nothing – and we mean nothing – to do with the foundation of wellness.
yy You are the Founder of Beyond Wellness; what do you think transcends the concept of wellness as we typically know it?
Many people will rubbish wellness as some sort of tree hugging, yoga, hippy practice. Real wellness, however, is probably one of the most important factors in our lives. It is having the drive to get up in the morning, a clean
bill of health, the stamina and mobility to function throughout your day, in addition to being happy with your current situation in life. yy Mothers often fall into the trap of being too busy to take care of themselves. How can they find the time to cater to their health and well-being?
This is something which may initially seem very hard, but can be achieved with some smart “hacks”. Mentally, a great way to start your day mindfully and purposefully is through meditation. You can easily find 10 to 20-minute guided meditations on
MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2016 | 13
PARENTING YouTube and play them through your earphones in the morning when you get up before the mad rush. For fitness, we have High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), a form of exercise which reaps maximum results from short intense bouts of exercise, typically lasting 15-20 minutes in total. Lastly, making the right food choices on a very hectic schedule can be hard, but not impossible. Eating healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, hummus, cottage cheese etc. makes it incredibly easy to eat well through the day with zero preparation. yy Ramadan tends to involve changes in lifestyle, particularly when it comes to nutrition. How can families ensure they’re getting all of the nutrients they need?
I think the issue with Ramadan is that people feel so hungry by iftar they tend to overeat, so eating mindfully becomes an important factor. There are normally around 4-5 hours of time when most people eat after sunset so eat small, regular meals to sustain your energy to avoid feeling lethargic and sleepy. This mean you can still take part in activities during the evening too. yyOut of all the health and wellbeing tips you give women, which ones do you think are the most important and why?
Lifting weights won’t make you bulky. Women seem to think this will happen and, understandably so, since it’s all over social media and magazines. What they don’t mention is that almost all of these fitness models are on performance-enhancing drugs which will form excess muscle. In fact, when women lift weights – naturally – they develop a strong metabolism which would help reduce body fat, in addition to building better muscle tone and shape. 14 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
❝ ❝Women seem to think this will happen
and, understandably so, since it’s all over social media and magazines.”
yyAs a personal trainer, what was the weirdest fitness request you’ve ever gotten?
The strangest requests I receive are regarding changing body parts, men wanting smaller bums and bigger biceps, women wanting smaller calves
and bigger chests. It’s great that people have goals and there’s a lot we can do over a substantial amount of time. However, some particular requests would require a plastic surgeon! yyThe number one question: how do we avoid falling off the fitness wagon?
I think accepting that it’s going to happen is the first way to avoid a dropoff. Life isn’t perfect and it’s going to get in the way sometimes. Many people stress out so much that something has ruined their regime that they go “all out” so to speak and end up making matters worse. So, if you ended up have that croissant with your morning coffee, who cares, it doesn’t mean you need to eat a bucket of fried chicken for lunch and biryani for dinner. One little treat isn’t going to ruin your whole week, so don’t stress.
FAMILY & PARENTHOOD
yyHow can we make sure we’re doing the right thing for our bodies; can one size fit all when it comes to health and well-being?
As with most questions in health and wellness, it depends. Yes, we could theoretically all follow the same training regime to burn body fat and build muscle. However, with workout regimes, there are factors which need to be taken into consideration; can you perform the exercises properly? Will you comply to the frequency of sessions per week? Are they enjoyable for you? In terms of nutrition, this is more tailored as with most people there’s going to be a variation in calories depending on gender, age and weight. Moreover, allergies and intolerances need to be taken into consideration. However, as a blanket statement, a healthy, balanced diet combining all the essential nutrients is key to health and well-being. To keep things as simple as possible, in order to shed excess body fat and feel better, eat less and move more. yyYou’re a supporter of the corporate wellness concept. Why do you think it’s so important and how can we make sure employers in the UAE are aware of this?
In the UAE, there’s a very strong ‘work hard, play hard’ attitude. This could be fine for a short period of time, but we know it always causes trouble on the long run. A recent YouGov Siraj survey has found that 60% of UAE residents were stressed and 65% out of these claimed this was from the workplace. Many people spend far more hours than required at work too.
Another study by Dubai Heath Authority has found that a staggering 81% of people in Dubai didn’t engage in enough physical activity on a weekly basis to increase or maintain health and wellness. This is why we need to MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2016 | 15
PARENTING be in the workplace educating staff and management about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This not only helps staff, but also the company in increasing productivity and decreasing health insurance costs. yyWith the wealth of health tips available out there, we often get confused. How can we keep it simple and get back to basics?
I fully agree, there’s a lot of information out there which can be misleading and confusing; the 5 main tips I would give to people to get the basics right are: 1. Drink lots of water, this is vital for literally ever cell in your body to function properly. 2. Eat predominantly fresh fruit and vegetables, white meats, fish, eggs, good fats and herbs and spices. 3. Take part in some kind of activity daily, even if its walking for 30 minutes. Try to be vigorously active at least 3 times a week (jogging, playing with the children, cleaning the house, all of these count).
❝ ❝Yes, it’s a very worrying time to be
bringing up children. Feed them properly, get them into activities and sports so they enjoy exercise from a young age and, most importantly, spend your precious time with them.”
4. Find time for yourself in a relaxing environment to either meditate, pray or reflect. 5. Practice gratitude for happiness, there is always something in life to be grateful for. yy Are you concerned over our children’s future? How can we ensure the coming generations are healthily happy?
Yes, it’s a very worrying time to be
bringing up children. Feed them properly, get them into activities and sports so they enjoy exercise from a young age and, most importantly, spend your precious time with them. This is the best way to keep your kids healthy and happy in this modern age. yyAny messages to help fathers encourage their children, especially young boys, to work out and watch their health?
I think the absolute best way for a father to encourage his children (especially boys) to be into health and wellness is to champion the concept himself. Every child’s father is their own superhero, so for a father to show his children he’s fit and strong, that he can lift them up and swing them around with ease, also keep up with them all afternoon – they’re going to learn from him.

Suhoor,
AN EARLY BREAKFAST? Healthy Eating During Ramadan and Beyond
yy Sarah Kanaan
Market Nutritionist, NestlĂŠ Middle East
Suhoor, the most important meal of the day in Ramadan, makes fasting easier and more tolerable, but what should it include to make it a healthy, balanced meal? This meal replaces breakfast. It helps jumpstart your metabolism and gives you the energy which will sustain you until iftar.
18 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
HEALTH & NUTRITION
W
hile suhoor is important for adults, it is even more crucial for fasting children as it affects their physical performance and mental alertness during their active day. Children who don’t eat suhoor may become tired at school and lose concentration in class. Skipping suhoor also prevents them from getting all of their nutritional needs and most of the essential nutrients for their growing bodies such as iron and calcium. yyWhat food groups should be included in your child’s healthy, balanced suhoor?
❝ ❝As a general rule, consider your suhoor
your breakfast meal consumed at an earlier timing.”
and corn. Picking the right type of grain can often be confusing, so it’s best to always check the label to be sure a food is really made of whole grains. As a general rule, consider your suhoor your breakfast meal consumed at an earlier timing. Explore healthier food items such as semi-skimmed milk, fruits, whole grain breads, lowsalt cheese and whole grain breakfast cereals making sure you switch your children’s consumption from refined to whole grains which can be as simple as substituting refined cereals with whole grain.
It is important to choose the right variety of foods for your children at suhoor including complex carbohydrates, fibre and lean protein. Complex carbohydrates, which are slowly absorbed carbohydrates, help release energy slowly during the long hours of fasting and are found in fibrerich foods such as whole grain breads and breakfast cereals. Therefore, it is highly recommended to consume at least half of your grain intake from whole grain foods. yyWhat exactly are whole grains?
Whole grains are products which contain all the three natural parts of the grain: 1. The first part (scientifically called the germ) nourishes the seed and is rich in B vitamins and Iron 2. The second layer (scientifically called the endosperm) provides energy to the grain, and contains carbohydrates and B vitamins and 3. the outer shell of the grain (scientifically called the bran) is the main source of fibre. Not a single component stands out in delivering health benefits, but rather, it is the combination found in whole grains which works. Whole grains can be found in a variety of cereals and include wheat, oats, barley, rice

THE 5 LANGUAGES OF Love Parenting Workshops Aimed at Emirati and Arab Parents on Effective Parenting Techniques yy By: Haroon Tahir

FAMILY & PARENTHOOD
T
hat was the idea behind a parenting workshop which was recently hosted in Dubai and focused on parent-child communication and the ‘languages of love’. The workshop, part of a monthly series, was led by Emirati family counsellor, Aisha Al Mutwa, and was aimed at Emirati and Arab parents. Centred around the idea that there are 5 languages of love that parents can communicate in with their child: physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts or acts of service, the workshop explained that parents can use these 5 languages to understand their children better, improve their relationship and, concurrently, positively impact their child’s emotions, feelings and behaviour. The workshop also emphasised on the importance of child individuality, while tailoring your communication approach to your child using a coherent mix of all the communication methods. For example, where words of affirmation may shape one child’s behaviour, another child may respond more effectively to gift or acts of service.
yy Parenting is easier when we understand that our children are human beings with their own personalities from day one.”
“The key is to understand their children’s unique language of love, it’s different from one child to another and what works with one, won’t necessarily work with the other,” says Anisa Al Sharif, co-founder of Zoom In Photography and a doting mother to a 4-yearold daughter, who organises the workshop series.
“Parenting is easier when we understand that our children are human beings with their own personalities from day one; each child has different needs and sees the world in their own unique way, learning this enables parents to adjust their communication style so that they strengthen their relationship with their children.”
Anisa sees children as unique individuals from day one:

CHILD-CENTRED LEARNING The Power of Progressive Education
30 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
EDUCATION
Based on the late 19th century model of the United States’ Progressive Era, progressive education stems from the belief that children are rational beings who need to understand their responsibilities as future participants in society.
Y
ears before this Era, philosophers had been studying the possibility of a more empowering education, which provided children with a wider perspective. Demands for a different type of schooling paved the way for progressive education which, in the words of one of the world’s first progressive headmasters: “helps an individual to develop an understanding of life, and the character and the power of thinking and doing that will help him to live richly, to use his abilities wisely and fully, and to be a useful and constructive member of his community.” Today, progressive education has found its way into schools around the world and, given the all-encompassing nature of Dubai’s educational system, the progressive model’s principles have been flourishing in full among its educational establishments. “The key elements of progressive education include a child-cantered, developmentally-appropriate mode of teaching that encourages dynamic, real-time collaboration and creative problem-solving. Children embark upon hands-on, extended integrated studies of subjects that are driven by both established curriculum and the needs of individual classes,” says Kimberly Taylor, a US-based expert on progressive education who is helping bring the curriculum to Dubai as academic advisor at Clarion School. “Children will have a real sense of Dubai by having explored it with all of their senses. They’ll learn to share this knowledge with one another on a daily basis, in real time. For example, when studying the Dubai creek, students will visit many times to analyse, sample and explore the water, vegetation and
MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2016 | 31
PARENTING
marine life present there. They will map how it has changed over time and how this has affected the people who lived nearby,” she adds. Through the progressive curriculum, children are encouraged to analyse their own learning, take responsibility for it and share it with others on a daily basis. In doing so, they develop a sense of themselves as learners and see the impact of their thoughts and actions in the classroom and wider environment. Teachers are seen as facilitators of learning, offering age-appropriate provocations for students to discover, uncover and construct their own learning. Rather than having a child memorise facts from a textbook, students are encouraged to approach their learning in a handson manner, utilising all five senses. With the arrival of a comprehensively progressive learning experience, Kimberly highlights the importance of a smooth parent-teacher relationship: “We find that clear, concise and consistent communication between parents, teachers and children enhances children's understanding of their learning, thereby extending the learning environments both at home and in school.” “The parent is truly the child's first and most important teacher. When a child has clear and consistent communication from both parents and teachers about academic and behavioural expectations, they can work to meet them to the best of their ability both at school and at home.” 32 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

KHDA RELEASES 2015-2016 SCHOOL RANKINGS REPORT Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has released the 2015-2016 School Inspection Key Findings report, which ranks each private school in the emirate and gives it a grade. The report highlights the performance of schools on the basis of curriculum as well as quality of school governance, leadership, self-evaluation and more.
Throughout Dubai, there are a total of 173 private schools – with 265,299 students; ninety per cent of Dubai students attend private schools. The 5 highest-ranked schools in Dubai were: • Kings’ School Dubai • GEMS Wellington International School • Jumeirah College • Jumeirah English Speaking School • Dubai College
The 5 lowest-ranked schools in Dubai were: • H.H. Shaikh Rashid Al Maktoum Pakistani School Dubai (English Language) • Gulf Model School • Crescent English School • Islamic School for Training & Education • Dubai Arabian American Private School
This year, 28 schools have improved their overall rating, with five declining. The report has found that 61 per cent of Dubai’s students are now in schools which offered a ‘good or better’ quality of education. In 2008-2009, only 30 per cent of students were.

THE BARE NECESSITIES UAE Residents Living Clutter-Free Convergence culture is among the most dominant features of modern society with mobile phones symbolising this trend by decluttering virtual spaces and bringing all online operations together into a single handheld device. yy By Hiba Naz
A
s people have internalised the benefits of decluttered virtual spaces, they subconsciously began applying this way of living in the physical world as well. According to a report compiled by LA Times, on average, a US household contains 300,000 items ranging from paperclips to chairs. There are many superfluous items which needlessly occupy space that people are now trying to shed. The trend is also rapidly manifesting itself in the UAE, as residents have been trying to follow the ‘less is more’ mantra. They’re downsizing their material possessions to create space and make a quick buck.
38 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
HOME IMPROVEMENT
The trend was initially observed by leading Dubai-based e-commerce website EZheights.com, where they noticed a rising number of ads for household goods. The rise of consumerism has led to an increase in possessions and this accumulation of goods is taking a toll on finances and household spaces. Additionally, with a large number of resources available at one’s disposal, the ‘less is more’ attitude is more environmentally-friendly and a practical approach for people staying in apartments. “Buying second-hand is more costeffective than buying new and there are often some real treasures to be found at a bargain price,” says Adham Saleh, managing director of EZheights.com. Saleh believes that this trend is just a product of technological advances where people are getting used to fewer items in their living spaces. “An alarm clock, telephone, radio, computer, diary, camera and calculator can now all be found in one device – the mobile phone. We’re becoming increasingly ‘paperless’ with documents and images stored on the cloud. In the 21st century, our lives arguably have the potential to be more streamlined than ever, hence the growing trend of ridding ourselves of superfluous junk,” he adds. What’s Hot in Home Improvement yy By Heather Vandevoorde, Ph.D.
Are you the type of woman to strap on a tool belt and get busy with DIY projects? According to the UAE’s Marketing to Women platform, 60% of us are. In fact, if you’re part of the 40% of women who shy away from DIY, isn’t it time to add some new skills? YouTube is full of step-by-step instructional videos. Here’s a checklist of the 10 skills every mother should know how to do around the house:

t’s a growing trend; women are not just writing the “honey do” lists any more, they are completing them. Perhaps that’s why the results of a recent annual online survey conducted in the UAE by Al-Futtaim ACE has shown some unique and emerging trends. Some of the more feminine-touch highlights include: • 95% of respondents indicated a willingness to pay extra for longlasting, energy-efficient lightbulbs • Also in the “green” frame of mind: low-chemical and odour factors beat out price as the top features customers looked for in paint • 50% (a 12-point rise from last year) wanted to further beautify their homes by adding mirrors, wall art and other decorative accessories
• 50% were looking to obtain kitchen appliance upgrades, followed by 47% looking to change kitchen doors, knobs and other features. • 48% of the same wanted to add accessories to the bathroom
Overall, 88% expressed a desire to make some sort of household improvement this year with 75% volunteering to do the work themselves versus hiring someone. The average budget range was from AED 1,001–5,000 allocated to these projects. Outdoors, 60% of respondents prioritised adding furniture, plants and grills over other work. Indoors, people felt the same with 47% indicating that new furniture topped their lists. Answers were high-tech oriented with a 17-point increase, with 38% of people reporting that they researched online, and a further 22% used social media for home improvement ideas. Ninety-three per cent of those surveyed owned basic hand tools, though very few owned power tools. Ladies, if you have never used a drill, you are really missing out on some fun. THE CHECKLIST Easy Ways to Enjoy Flying with Children
50 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
SAVVY MAMA
With the summer holidays approaching and families starting to think about flying home or to a new destination, it’s worth going over some basic steps to make flying more pleasant for you, your children and your fellow flyers.
✔A happy flight starts online
before you leave for the airport. Many websites have comprehensive details of the paperwork required for traveling with minors, so you can plan ahead. You can also order children’s meals online and reserve equipment such as bassinets for infants.
✔
✔Take advantage of all the
concessions offered to families, such as being allowed to take strollers to the door of the aircraft when boarding. Families also get priority when boarding and you can wait until other passengers have disembarked before doing so with your family.
✔Understand air pressure: The
pressurisation in passenger aircraft is likely to be a child’s main source of discomfort. During landing and take-off, giving the child food or drink will trigger their swallowing reflex, which will help their ears equalise.
✔Most parents have a good idea
of which foods make their kids overactive and tetchy, but in general, avoid sweet treats or ones that have artificial colourants when travelling. Chewy snacks like dried fruits will help with pressurising their ears while limiting the spikes in blood sugar which can result in tantrums. While it’s good to keep
the child hydrated, don’t overdo it as this can result in nappy changes and trips to the toilet
✔Pack favourite, familiar snacks
for the kids to supplement meals served on board.
✔Keeping the child occupied is
obviously crucial if they’re awake. One tried-and-tested trick is to gift-wrap treasured toys and present them when the child gets bored. It might also be useful to buy some new toys and ration them out during the flight. Avoid toys like Lego blocks as they can fall in hard-to-reach places.
✔ Mobile devices can be of benefit
to parents and, although many families ration children’s use of tablets, a long-haul flight might justify a little leeway. Headphones are useful tools for movies, music, apps and games, but crayons and paper are always favourites.
✔Generally, it’s better to not seat
kids on the aisle, as they may bump into passing trolleys which have hard edges and hot water.
✔Don’t over-pack. You’ll need
the basics – wipes, nappies, sanitisers and so on – and remember that if your child is very young, you’ll need to carry them as well¾

FOR YOU
With the weather getting warmer, the desire to apply more makeup is no longer there. Thankfully, the “natural” look is quite popular this summer. Of course, natural still means a bit of work, but that doesn’t mean complicated with layers and layers of beauty cake. Let me break it down for you:
GOING
Natural yy By Haneen Odeh

THE BEAUTY CABINET
• The number one
step for natural is to have great skin. Luckily, along with perfect nails and bushy eyebrows, it can be faked. I recommend using a tinted moisturiser like NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser. The colour range is fantastic, texture is hydrating enough and it blurs out most imperfections while still looking like you have nothing on. It gets bonus points for containing a broadspectrum SPF 30 sunscreen and being oil free so it’s good for all skin types.
• I then recommend some concealer,
but keeping it light is key to the natural look. For that, the Benefit Cosmetics’ Fake Up hydrating concealer is terrific. It’s emollient enough to apply smoothly and comes in 3 different colours. If you constantly have very dark blue or purple circles under your eyes, then it may be worth layering a colour corrector underneath. For that, I recommend the Laure Mercier Secret Camouflage

goes away and leaves the skin looking radiant.
• As for blush, gel or cream is the
most natural looking. My favourite is the Multiple Stick in the colour Orgasm by Nars. This is a gorgeous peach flecked with a bit of gold which flatters all skin tones. A light application of that will give you the radiance you need. Onto the eyes then…

concealer. This is a two-step concealer, the first is an orange/peach colour corrector followed by a fleshcoloured concealer on top.
• Whichever concealer you opt for, a
quick dusting of powder on top of that is key. I use YSL beauty Soufflé D’Eclat loose powder. It has a slight bit of shimmer, but once applied, that
eyes. Groomed eyebrows are key to looking put together. I used to fill mine in with a powder, but decided to try micro-pigmentation, which is a semi-permanent application. They now look full, yet natural, and it gets bonus points because it saves me so much time in the morning not needing to fill them in anymore.
• As for the lips, I swear
by the Dior Addict Lip Glow; it’s a balm which “revives” your lips’ natural colour while hydrating them. I use it religiously. It comes in 2 colours, pink and coral, and looks great on pretty much everyone. It’s the epitome of “my lips, only better”.
IS ‘NONTOURING’ THE NEW CONTOURING? First, there was contouring. Then, there was strobing. Now, these two trends have come together to create the next big thing in makeup: nontouring. Celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Khloè Kardashian are ditching their matte makeup looks, opting instead for nontouring’s natural-looking glow.

Road Safety
ON THE LINE
? d e r e v o C u o Y t o G e c n Has Your Insura If there were ever any doubts over the effectiveness of road safety campaigns, now would be the time to dismiss them. In the UAE, trends in consumer behaviour towards car insurance packages have proven that awareness over family safety and well-being on the road has indeed shifted.
56 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
FINANCES
A
growing awareness over the importance of road safety could be leading UAE consumers to buy car insurance based on the level of cover, rather than simply selecting the cheapest option. Data from Middle East finance comparison site compareit4me.com has shown that 85 per cent of customers buying car insurance through the site would not opt for the cheapest policy, choosing instead to spend more on better cover.
❝ ❝The main problem lies in the fact that
awareness remains on the lower side when it comes to car insurance packages.”
These findings tie in with a new report from the UAE Road Safety Monitor which shows that 56 per cent of motorists feel that driving in the UAE is more dangerous now than it was 6 months ago. “Our data shows that the public is more interested in cover than price. Many of our insurers offer a range of products with varying levels of cover. We see the mid-range products as being by far the most popular with about an equal number of customers opting for premium or basic products,” says compareit4me. com CEO Jon Richards. Last year, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) reported that Dubai has one car for every two people, placing the city high on global ratings for vehicle density, while the Ministry of Interior reported that 21 per cent of fatalities on the roads in 2015 were caused by lane swerving. According to a study commissioned by Qatar Insurance Company (QIC), this frightening statistic is in no small part linked to the misunderstanding and misuse of indicating.
“I was surprised by the fact that such a large portion of people say they actively use the indicator, but all other statistics indicated that they didn’t. Also, it seems like people feel accidents will happen to the others and not to them, which again shows they focus more on how other drivers behave rather than looking inwards,” explains Frederik Bisbjerg, head of group retail and executive vice president for MENA retail at QIC. The possibility of facing costly repairs is evidently playing on car owners’ minds,
as is the problem of being without easy means of transportation should an incident occur. Compareit4me.com’s Richards explains: “In addition to spending on good quality car insurance policies, we also see many customers topping up their cover by purchasing add-ons such as Personal Accident and Replacement Car.’’ Confusion over covers
The main problem lies in the fact that awareness remains on the lower side when it comes to car insurance packages, and overestimating what they can offer. More findings show that over one third of car owners in the UAE believe they can count on their car insurance policy for general wear and tear claims. “Unfortunately, the stigma of women not knowing much about cars is still very much prominent not just here, but all over the world. So, do a little research first about the type of car you’re interested in. Go into it equipped with some knowledge,” says Financial Life Planner and Author of Millionaire Mindset - 6 Steps to A Wealthy Life Rasheda Khatun Khan. “The number one mistake is solely relying on the car dealers’ financing and additional ‘add-ons’. Be sure to
shop around. Check your own bank, or others, for car loans. Shop around for the extras or at least know what they cost elsewhere. Look at comparisons between car brands too. You might just find the same car at a better price. Be savvy in your purchase,” she adds. More often than not, car insurance policies don’t cover the replacement of auto parts which deteriorate with time and use, such as brake pads and tyres. Car insurance is generally in place to cover unpredictable events such as accidents and collisions. Wear and tear is inevitable, and therefore not covered by most, if not all, car insurers in the UAE. “Definitely find yourself a good insurance broker. Be sure to go with a broker who’s been recommended by someone you know. Use the same person, this way you can guarantee good service. Also, brokers usually get better prices simply because of the buying power they have in giving regular business,” advises Khatun. Generally, the more expensive the car, the higher the auto insurance price. There are also a number of other factors to be considered in the calculation of insurance premiums such as vehicle type, amount of driving experience, accident history, age and where the applicant lives. What to look out for:
• Do you get no claims discount? • What’s the excess on the policy?
This means you have to shell out this amount first before you can make a claim. Your provider will often sell you a low premium, but high excess.
• Will roadside assistance take my car to a garage of my choice? Make sure you keep the card in your car as you only need it in case of emergency.
• Am I covered in the UAE or entire GCC? • Understand whether you’re taking comprehensive or third party insurance.
• If I change my car halfway through my year, can I transfer the policy to my new car?¾

800 ID CARD A New Hotline for UAE Visa Applications

FAMILY AFFAIRS
Picture this: Your visa is due for renewal and you have to use your one free afternoon this week to go to the typing centre, followed by a tiresome visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to complete your application. Unfortunately, you weren’t the only busy mum who had the same idea and you now have to keep an eye on the screen until your ticket number is called. This may take a while. Now, picture the same scene with a restless child running
around asking when it’ll be over. The situation is quite familiar to many of us. Luckily, Dubai residents can now consider this a thing of the past. Last month, ID Card Centre , Dubai’s first ‘smart’ document processing centre, launched a multilingual toll-free hotline, 800 IDCARD (800 432273), to assist customers enquiring about the new ‘UAE Vision’ system for immigration visas. ID Card Centre decided to extend

its services following the recent announcement by the UAE’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) on the UAE Vision system for visa processing. The new system makes it possible for residents to visit any authorised typing or documentation centre for visa processing requirements, which means we no longer need to pay a visit to the GDRFA headquarters or any of its external branches. To make things even more convenient, ID Card Centre has tied up with Zajel courier service, which would enable us to schedule the pick-up or delivery of visa-related transactions from the comfort of our own homes. “We wanted to offer residents an alternative, less frustrating application process,” says Ismail Ibrahim, managing director of ID Card Centre. He also warned customers seeking typing or documentation centres for visa applications to look out for the ‘Amer’ logo as these are the centres approved by authorities. The Centre also offers other services including medical documentation for visas, document attestation, legal translation, legal advice, business set-up processing, business name registration, trademark and barcode registration, and Wages Protection Systems (WPS). The hotline service is available in Arabic, English, Hindi and Malayalam and is open from 9 am – 10 pm, Saturday to Thursday. Ramadan timings may differ ¾

KEEP YOUR VEGETABLES FRESH FOR LONGER Having the right temperature and moisture is key to retaining the quality of food. Cool temperatures reduce moisture loss and prevent it from decaying. However, if it is too cold, there could be a formation of frost. Ideal moisture levels should be between 60 and 70 per cent; having too much or too little moisture affects storage life. Your apples, pears and mangoes are less sensitive to moisture loss and require low humidity, whereas high humidity levels are required for your watermelons, strawberries, leafy greens and other vegetables. Placing them in the right compartment of your refrigerator is also vital to prolonging their life and flavour. 66 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

TIPS & TRICKS
y y Tell us about Ramadan preparations: how hectic does it get and what is the most difficult thing to do?
Ramadan is a very busy period for us; we have full house every day during iftar and we have to prepare suhoor at the same time. One of the most difficult tasks in Ramadan is organising the team. As we have more people helping in the kitchen, it can get difficult to organise and assign tasks for everyone, but the dynamic in the kitchen is more lively and the energy of the team inspires me to keep going.
During Ramadan, my working hours change, the team gets bigger, we cook more food and add much more dishes to the buffet. We plan the Ramadan menu in advance and carefully select every ingredient.
❝❝During Ramadan, my
working hours change, the team gets bigger, we cook more food and add much more dishes to the buffet.”
y y Which one of your dishes is a must-try this month?
The fish tagine! I have been working on the recipe for this dish and I am sure our guest will love it.
y y What are your Ramadan favourites and what are the dishes which people love the most?
I am a harira soup lover! For me, harira soup is a must during Ramadan; I eat a bowl every day. It has so much flavour and goes well with beef, chicken or seafood, I just love it. The Moroccan chicken bastilla is a favourite during Ramadan. I think it reminds people of their childhood, it is a dish many mums cook during Ramadan. Seafood dishes are popular as well.
y y What is the most rewarding part of being a chef and how does your job dynamic change during Ramadan?
It feels great when people enjoy the food you cook, bringing families together around the table is an amazing feeling. I love being able to create new dishes and innovate traditional recipes.

For the Mains, we went for the Wagyu Tri Tip with Roast Potato and Jus Moghrabieh with Broccoli and Tomato Sauce. The Wagyu was perfectly cooked at medium and Moghrabieh, which I ordered without knowing what it was, consisted of little small balls of wheat drenched in a comforting Moroccan-style tomato sauce. The desserts were also winners, with the Bread and Butter Pudding with Raw Coffee and White Chocolate Custard at the right degree of sweet and my companion ordering seconds of the Oreo which was, naturally, an Intersect Oreo, stuffed with apricots and dates and served with a very sour lemon-infused cream.

Staying Hydrated
WHAT’S IN A BOTTLE OF MINERAL WATER?
The importance of reading food and beverage labels extends beyond recognising health benefits and measuring caloric intake. Even with something as vital and simple as water, staying hydrated should also mean staying informed as bottled water labels can offer more insights than we believe they do.

ater hydrates and helps regulate body temperature; this is especially important for children who are physically active or living in hot climates like the UAE’s – all without adding calories to their diet, but are there any components which can make it more difficult or harmful to drink water? Sodium is the first ingredient to look out for as high sodium can raise blood pressure. You should also look out for high levels of minerals. If they’re too high, they make the water difficult to digest,” says Stefano Lorini, managing director of Memag Trading, Monviso water’s distributor in the UAE. It’s often assumed that water has no sugar content, but some bottled water brands may have added sugar, another ingredient to look out for. If the label shows calories, that means sugars have been added. Furthermore, you’ll find that ingredients vary from one brand to another; bottled water companies purify water, but then add extra ingredients back. The good news is: mineral levels are often too low to cause any health problems, but they may cause variations in taste with some brands

Better-tasting varieties may make it easier to consume larger amounts of water, but can that effect always be considered positive? “To avoid dehydration and make sure your body has the fluids it needs, you should make water your beverage of choice. If you drink enough so that you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colourless or light yellow, your fluid intake is probably adequate,” explains Stefano. “Although uncommon, it is possible to drink too much water. The higher the sodium levels in water, the more

likely the body will retain it. Given the increasingly processed, high-sodium diets we follow today, low-sodium mineral water can help clear the body of toxins and support ideal-weight goals.” As for children, they may need to modify their total fluid intake depending on how active they are, the climate they’re living in and their health status. For example, hot or humid weather can make them sweat and requires additional fluid intake. When kids have fever, diarrhoea or are vomiting, their bodies lose additional fluids. In these cases, they should also drink more water.
5 simple steps to make your children drink more water 1. Make it available: when they see water, they’re more likely to drink it.
2. Know the right amount, the recommended daily water consumption for children is: • 6-7 cups for 4 to 8-year-olds • 8-9 cups for 9 to 13-year-olds Remember this is just a guide, every child is unique and so are their body’s requirements. 3. Monitor their hydration levels, children may be at a greater risk of dehydration than adults for several reasons, one of them being that they don’t often voluntarily drink adequate amounts of fluids during physical activity, so make sure they drink water before, during and after any type of exercise, especially in hot weather. One of the more practical ways to assess your child’s hydration levels is

BETWEEN THE LABELS through the colour of their urine. A clear urine means your child is wellhydrated. The darker the colour, the less hydrated your child is and the higher the need for drinking water. 4. Be a role model: Encourage your children to drink water more regularly. Make sure to drink water in front of them in order to encourage them to adopt the behaviour themselves. 5. Make the act of drinking water easy and entertaining by using fun straws and cups at home or playing water-themed games; you may also try adding a lemon wedge or squeezing a little bit of fresh orange juice in for some taste.

IF SOMETHING Pops Up‌ Why mummy entrepreneurs are choosing pop-ups
With an active business climate and many mothers struggling to go back to their original, traditional workplaces, mothers are seeking ways to develop their own businesses, also in avoidance of the increasing online-offline retailer gap.
82 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
MUMS IN BUSINESS
M
any brands and venues have turned to creative pop-ups to help keep the boat afloat and revive business. Share This Space, a Dubai-based distribution channel for local and international boutique start-ups and brands, shares its insights with Mother, Baby & Child on why pop-ups are the future of retail: 1. Closing the gap between online and offline
Pop-ups give online brands a platform to bring what’s seen on screen to the real world. Products you had in that pending cart can now be felt, smelled or tasted in person before checking out to make the purchase. The need for this reassurance and understanding will never go out of style. This tradition will always prevail even in such tech-obsessed times. This is just a way to give a brand’s audience the best of both worlds and merge two divided fan bases. 2. Breathing life into venues On the other hand, offline
MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2016 | 83
CAREER retailers may have a different dilemma: expensive rent and decreased footfall. Pop-ups can remedy this by giving additional income for sharing a space, creating a new experience for customers and drawing in their own online and offline followers bringing life to an otherwise stagnant venue. Pop-ups aren’t a new concept and their constant re-emergence just shows that it’s a tried-andtested solution. According to retail
specialists, pop-ups are a massive $8-billion market alone and these numbers have encouraged more to join the movement. 3. Staying relevant made more feasible
Not every pop-up ‘pops up’ for the sake of making ends meet. It’s also a way to keep a place relevant. Relevance is the life force of any successful business. The times are changing and sometimes the ‘in thing’ isn’t what it was when
you first started your venture, but it’s there in concrete and you’re sticking to it. This doesn’t mean you can’t ride the trend wave either. This is another great way pop-ups come in. They allow you to create mini campaigns which keep you relevant without having to abandon an existing model, make a huge commitment or change at all. It’s temporary and can last just as long as the current ‘in thing’ before trying out the next one.
IN THE HOT SEATMohamad
Karim
Retail & Operations Manager, The Change Initiative
yyHow does The Change Initiative’s concept encourage pop-ups?
The Change Initiative is a family-owned business; therefore, it’s quick and easy for us to come up with immediate ideas that help support the local community and help people connect. We encourage pop-ups because we believe they help support and engender the community spirit and help drive knowledge of The Change Initiative as a legitimate community space in the true sense of the word – of the community, for the community. yyWhy do you think pop-ups are the new way of doing business, especially for mothers?
Pop-ups aren’t a new concept. Farmers have been selling fruits and vegetables roadside for the past 50 years and more. Country fetes are community pop-ups that bring crafters and bakers and makers together; they have been happening for at least the past hundred years! So, pop-ups are not new. The world of marketing has taken the idea and made it trendy, but it’s a good thing because it helps ensure they remain as legitimately good ways of supporting small businesses and the creators of small-batch, artisanal products.

Motherhood is a beautiful feeling altogether, but there have been days when I’d felt like a zombie due to lack of sleep. I do make mistakes like everybody else, but I learn from them to develop as a human being, parent and interior designer. I make time to focus on my personal growth by adopting resilience. I’ve realised that setting specific time blocks for activities, even with a newborn, helps my family feel fulfilled. yyWhat’s the most inspirational aspect of being a mother?
Motherhood is inspiring in more ways than I can think. A lot of my designs are now child-friendly. I try to avoid sharp edges which a mother would not want with a toddler around and see all of my designs from a mother’s perspective, then decide whether they would be suitable for a house with kids around. Being a mother has given me a completely new perspective on interior design. yyHow has motherhood affected your career?
I work harder and I’m more focused on my goals than before. My
career and family are the two most important things in my life, but balancing them is an art which I’m gradually learning to achieve. I face various challenges every day, but
don’t let them dictate my attitude towards my passion. I believe that if you stay focused on what you’d like to achieve, you’ll always find a way to overcome all obstacles. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2016 | 87

Decide early on whether you’re looking for an e-commerce website or purely an informational one as there’s a big difference in cost and set-up time. I’ve seen, on countless occasions, people taking months and months over putting up a website when in fact it’d be better to get the simple contact and company information pages up quickly first and slowly build it up. It’s essential to have a web presence for any business in this day and age.

yyYou always bring new services to the market; how can an entrepreneur do this without affecting their core branding?
I think many small businesses have never actually taken the time out of running their business to clarify what their core branding is and what they stand for. If they haven’t worked it out, how can they expect their clients to know? I know this because I was guilty of it for years! Once you run that exercise, it’s a lot easier to be creative with adding services while staying true to who they are. yyYou support non-toxic products, tell us about the importance and ease of checking on what we buy for our children.
Parents have it much easier these days in some ways as information
❝ ❝I think many small businesses

is available at your fingertips. Having said that, I also believe we’re inundated with conflicting information all the time which can often result in total confusion as to what’s the right thing to do for our children. We were the first baby business here back in 2008 to introduce
BPA-free bottles to the market and, although research was still new, I believed in giving parents a choice. As a business, we continue to bring in a wide variety of products, but always follow our benchmark for safety, innovation and quality. yyWhat are some tips you can give mothers who are putting together a shopping list?
Write it, then cut it in half! If you’re having your first baby, you’ll be totally overwhelmed with all the choices available these days. You’ll also be given a lot of advice, wanted or unwanted, from friends and family. There are a few key products which make total sense, but many which are ‘nice to have’s’ and not strictly necessary. My advice is to focus on the main areas – sleep, play, eat and travel, and always think about your own lifestyle, not that of your friends or family back home. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2016 | 89

When you walk into a dentist’s office, the last thing you expect is to see a baby bump. That’s where you see me, a pregnant dentist. Having spent the past two decades as a doctor of dental surgery, including 12 years in clinical practice and earning a Master’s degree in Lasers in Dentistry from Germany and a European Masters in Oral Laser applications, it seemed like second nature to me to take my baby bump to work.
yy By: Dr Yasmin Omran Dubai Sky Clinic
If
you’re planning a family, your body and baby will thank you for setting up (and cleaning up) the baby house a.k.a. your body. Visiting your dentist before conceiving is very important to get your oral health on track. Then there it comes, a big fat plus sign. Whether your pregnancy was planned or came as a big surprise, there is no doubt that it can be one of the most joyous times of a woman’s life. It can also be a challenging time, dealing with all the changes your body is going through. One of the first things you should consider when you find out you’re pregnant is to visit your dentist. The combination of a change in hormonal balance and development of a sweet tooth can have adverse effects on the gums and teeth. It’s quite common for your gums to get inflamed during pregnancy and this inflammation progresses quite rapidly if not treated. Signs of gum inflammation can range from puffiness to bleeding and soreness in the gums. A great place to start is to eat a balanced diet rich in proteins, calcium and vitamins, steering away from simple carbohydrates. This will bring all sorts of benefits for you and your baby and will contribute to your overall well-being. It’s also important for your baby’s teeth buds which begin developing at around 8 weeks of gestation. So, get started early on with good nutrition and oral hygiene to help develop those tiny pearly whites. delivery. It’s important to always let your dentist know that you’re expecting, so that they can take all the necessary precautions to protect you and your baby. The best time to get any dental treatment done is the second trimester, but your dentist should be able to carry out necessary treatments safely in the first and third trimesters as well. If you’re suffering from morning sickness, avoid the temptation to brush immediately after being sick, as the acid from your stomach can cause tooth erosion which will worsen with brushing. Opt for a drink of water instead and return to brushing your teeth around an hour later. Morning sickness is common and the acid can be very damaging to the surface of your teeth. If you experience morning sickness, make sure you rinse your teeth with mouthwash. Opt for a minty flavour that will refresh rather than add to the nausea. There’s an old wives’ tale that says “a woman loses one tooth for every child she delivers”. While we don’t have any hard data on this, there are three factors during pregnancy which may increase cavities: a boost in female 94 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
❝ ❝There’s an old wives’ tale that says “a woman loses one tooth for every child she delivers.”
sex hormones, a reduction in the flow rate of saliva and its antimicrobial properties and an increase in cravings for high-energy, sweet foods. Such changes in hormonal and saliva secretions coupled with an increase in the consumption of sweet foods can explain why some women feel like they get more cavities pre or post-pregnancy. The best way to avoid this, just to be on the safe side, is to continue to brush properly and avoid
eating all the sugary foods you’ve always known to be bad for your teeth. With my practice being focused on laser dentistry, gum and aesthetic treatments, I treat many pregnant women on a daily basis. Laser dentistry is an excellent tool for treating gum disease at lightning speed in comparison with conventional treatment. It’s extremely beneficial in reducing healing time and is a generally painless procedure. Therefore, it is ideal to control gum disease before conceiving and get back to good oral health after delivery. It’s common for anxiety and stress to be amplified during pregnancy, but staying calm and relaxed is beneficial for you and your little one. I encourage my pregnant patients to listen to relaxing music during treatments and we even practice some breathing exercises together to make treatments as pleasant as can be. Finally, enjoy your pregnancy. The emotional and physical rollercoaster may be hard to deal with, but remember that you’re cocooning your beautiful baby, so cherish every moment!

In the past, we would only hear of hair transplantation as a surgical technique to treat bald or thinning areas of the scalp. However, given recent medical advances, hair transplant procedures are now being used to treat other areas of the body. Among such procedures are surgical techniques, including eyebrow and eyelash transplants, which are becoming increasingly popular.
EASY ON THE Eyes
Eyebrow and Eyelash Transplants yy Dr Nic Isse Plastic Surgeon, The American Surgecenter, Abu Dhabi
96 | JUNE 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
MOTHER y y How do you assess patients for eyebrow and eyelash transplants?
Eyebrow and eyelash transplants are ideal for both medical and cosmetic purposes. Such treatments are recommended for individuals who suffer from partial/total loss, or thinning of eyebrows/eyelashes due to alopecia, injuries, burns and over-plucking the eyebrows or the misuse of eyelash extensions. Ideal candidates also include those who want to improve eyebrow thickness and the eyelash length and fullness. y y What makes such procedures better than other treatments/products including eyebrow tattoos and eyelash extensions?
We use your own natural hair for transplants so we can ensure a natural post-procedure look. Donor hairs are living follicles from your head so they will grow like your normal hair. Therefore, they offer permanent solutions to problems in comparison to
tattoos which require top-ups or extensions which you need to redo again and again. y y Please describe the procedure.
It employs a state-of-the-art micro-surgical transplantation technique conducted under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation. Follicular units are obtained from the back or lateral side of the scalp. Grafts are separated into singular hair follicular units, with each of the units carefully prepared to ensure they are intact and ready for transplant; they are as small and as clean as possible. Any excess fat, dermis and epidermis is trimmed away as only a minimum amount of tissue should be left around the bulb. The units are placed one at a time into each recipient site – tiny incisions on the brow area or eyelids. Every hair follicle is implanted individually with utmost care to ensure specific placement onto the recipient area. Depending on how many hairs
are transplanted, each procedure could take between 2 to 4 hours, with the surgeon meticulously checking the shape and density of the transplanted hairs until both parties – surgeon and patient – are happy with the results. Procedures are virtually pain and risk-free, although the patient may experience minimal tenderness and some small crust formation on the areas of scalp where the hair graft was taken for about 5 days. Basic post-operative care is essential. The healing process would take approximately 5 days. y y How long will it take until I get to see the final results?
Transplanted hairs will grow at the rate of normal scalp hair. Once the eyebrows grow, they will require regular maintenance and trimming and the same goes for the eyelashes.
