Editor’s Note
Mother’s Day is coming! As you can imagine, at Mother, Baby & Child it’s a day we really look forward to. Not only is it all about you – the lovely mamas who inspire us, but it also serves as a reminder of the magnificent notion we’ve chosen to write about and represent. Starting off with some education news: We’ve been reading that fees for top Dubai schools could jump by 4.8 per cent the next academic year. Rest assured, mamas, the schools we’ve been interviewing have been very keen on maintaining an open communication with parents and many of them are not even changing their fee structure. Now for some baby news, Beyoncé broke the internet with her lovely baby bump and a 63-year-old woman has given birth to a healthy baby girl through IVF in Dubai. Congrats are also in order, George and Amal Clooney are expecting twins, a boy and a girl, and we’re busy coming up with baby names for them. “It’s going to be an adventure,” George said when asked about the baby news. Oh it will be George, it’ll be just that and then some more.

PRENATAL EXERCISES FOR MUMS-TO-BE
Pilates is a well-known low-impact, total body workout, especially suited for pregnant women. As expecting mums have limited options to exercise in Dubai, Real Pilates encourages pregnant women to stay active and maintain high energy levels throughout their pregnancy through a variety of prenatal exercises.
The ‘Prenatal Mat’ classes are specially designed to maintain strength and endurance, supporting a woman’s changing body during pregnancy. This workout is on a mat with small equipment and it’ll help women enhance muscle tone and keep a healthy body weight. The ‘Prenatal Reformer’ session is easily adjusted for the changing pregnant body and adds an exciting element to prenatal as well as postnatal exercises. These classes are great for building strength, relieving back tension and maintaining posture throughout or after a woman’s pregnancy.
Classes start from AED 85 and packages are available. real-pilates.com 08 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

ISSUE Baby’s BIRTH CERTIFICATE
AT THE HOSPITAL
The Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) has launched a new system which authorises the issuance of electronic birth certificatesfor newborns at Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children.
Documents required for the issuance of a new birth certificate include the original birth notification provided by the hospital and family book (applicable to citizens only) as well as the parents’ passports, marriage certificate and identity cards.
Healthcare facilities and centres currently connected this system are required to send electronic copies of all original documents to HAAD. HAAD then validates the accuracy and completeness of paperwork and provides the necessary approvals for the issuance of an electronic certificate at the hospital.

MUMMY DIARIES EXPAT MUMS TELL US
ABOUT MOTHERHOOD
IN THE UAE
Mum to 7-year-old Barney, and newborn baby girl Daisy, Lucy Holmes is from the UK and has been a Dubai resident for six years. The freelance marketing and PR consultant currently lives on The Palm Jumeirah with her husband, Lee. What’s the best thing about being a mum?
Being a mum is everything to me, and has probably become the most important part of my identity. It’s hard to define, however, the most important element is probably the feeling of pure, unconditional love with my child and sharing this wonderful, amazing responsibility with my husband. Tell us the funniest moment you’ve experienced with your child.
My son is a real character. I loved it when he was learning to talk and would often get words wrong or make up words for things. I made a little book of these memories; this week, my kettle broke and he said: “Mummy, why did you break your tea machine?” I love his literal explanation of items and that he already knows that, like every true Brit, my tea is important to me. How has living in Dubai changed your motherhood style?
We’re lucky enough to have live-in help, which is essential to us and is a very common requirement here, especially when both parents have full-on jobs. Having an amazing helper frees up my time to spend precious moments with my son as I don’t have to do household chores. I’m probably a happier and more attentive mum than 20 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
when we were back home in the UK and I was juggling motherhood, housework and a career. What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a mum?
A very personal challenge was when we tragically had a late miscarriage and had to explain to my son that the baby had gone to heaven. Helping him understand it, choosing the right language and emotionally supporting him while also struggling to come to terms with it was a huge challenge, but we were surrounded by love from family and friends who really helped us. What’s the parenting tip every mother should know?
To always follow your own instincts and constantly show love. Little people need to be surrounded by love, positivity and happiness – just like big people… What do you think Barney will do for you this Mother’s Day?
I hope we’ll spend a precious family day together and be outdoors. Simple fun for me is a picnic on the beach or at the park. My husband always arranges for a card and gift, which is so sweet, and I love it when my son makes his own card for me.

MUMMY DIARIES EXPAT MUMS TELL US
ABOUT MOTHERHOOD
Mummy to Laith, Lyana and Liam, Afra Nolan says she was born into a melting pot of culture, but is technically part Yemeni, part Tanzanian. She’s been in Dubai for as long as she can remember, working, growing and falling in love. What has surprised you the most about motherhood?
Everything! Motherhood has made me a warrior; it’s given me strength I never knew I had. Motherhood has shown me love I never knew I could feel and has given me happiness I never thought I’d have. What’s your parenting style like?
I used to be the ‘type A’ mum, volunteering in school, going for weekly playdates, doing activities throughout the week, homework, reading – just heavily routine-driven. Although I still am very strict with the kids’ routines, I have learnt to be more relaxed.
We spend more afternoons talking, painting, listening to music and it has brought us closer. I enjoy the simpler things in life, with a more holistic approach. How has life as an expat mum in Dubai been treating you?
I’ve never felt like an expat here and I don’t think I ever will. I’ve been raised with Emiratis, speak Arabic and associate a lot with Emirati culture. I can only say that Dubai has been nothing less than a great home to me.
What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a mum?
I’ve had my fair share of challenges and they still arise every now and then. The biggest would be sleep deprivation, my kids’ diet and, of course, being patient. On the other hand, the rarer challenge I face is raising Irish and Tanzanian/ Yemeni children, wanting to embed a little something of the European, African and Arab culture without pushing them into having an identity crisis! What do you think the kids will do for you this Mother’s Day?
A card they’ve made at school, and that’s still the best present I could ask for. Although, I wouldn’t mind a Cartier bracelet (hope you’re reading this John). 22 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Located in Souk al Bahar, CLAW is the perfect location to watch the madness of downtown Dubai and party with pals and their kids. You can’t pass up the chance to eat messy, delicious and addictive grills and seafood.
Our very friendly waiter Mark, who seemed to speak every language known to man quite proficiently, brought a line-up of cooked-toperfection dishes to our table. First up was an endless bucket of steamed mussels, followed by a mixed seafood bucked, garlic oysters and an extra-giant lobster. All cooked/grilled with mastery, the lobster was a favourite. The kids munched on burgers and nachos, and were happy to colour and play all the way through dinner. We ended the meal with a monster shake, ‘Stand by Me Hershey’s’, which was drenched in chocolate, M&M’S and a piece of chocolate brownie. All in all, highly recommended for a family-friendly dinner!

PARENTING
TIPS F OR N EW M U M S
When you become a mum, it seems like 98% of your female family members, friends and acquaintances suddenly turn into either Oprah or Martha Stewart.
You’re flooded with bits and pieces of advice on everything ranging from how to take care of your baby to home improvement tips. Don’t fret, here are 50 tips which will help you stay on the same page as baby, without (completely) losing your mind.
ADVICE, ADVICE AND MORE ADVICE
1 2 3 4 5
Ignore advice from anyone with a child over two years old. They probably don’t remember (yes, we said it). smile and then do only what feels right.
Listen,
Be realistic! Think baby will fit right into your life and you’ll get back on track in no time? That’s just not going to happen.
Go with the flow. Parenting is not a scientific formula. Let things come naturally and smoothly, and doing what feels right for you and baby will sure do the trick.
Join a mother-baby group. You get to share ideas, have endless chats about baby and much more. It’ll help you feel like you’re not alone.
Mums love calling themselves ‘supermums’, but guess what? They all are! If someone offers to help, and you feel comfortable, let them.
BREASTFEEDING
10 11 12 13
9
6 7 8
Listen to baby. Instead of applying a ‘two-hour’ feeding schedule, why not leave it on demand? Baby’s needs are a good guide of what you need to do.
Breastfeeding may sound easy, and very natural. Right? Not really, and that’s why we would recommend getting some help from a lactation consultant.
Breastfeeding hurts at the beginning. It’s completely normal as your nipples are raw and cracked. Don’t lose hope; the pain will eventually subside.
Stay hydrated so your body can make enough milk. You can even sip from a glass of water while nursing. Drink at least eight glasses of liquids a day.
Depending on your age, metabolism and activity level, your calorie needs will likely be 2,200 to 2,400 daily. The good news: Breastfeeding mums tend to lose one to four pounds a month even with the added calories.
Don’t try to establish a feeding schedule during the first six weeks. It’s crucial to let your baby nurse whenever they want. The more baby eats, the more milk you’ll produce.
Wherever (and whenever) you nurse, have plenty of pillows (for back support and to help position the baby properly), water, snacks, a good book and the TV remote.
Breast pumps will save your life, especially if you’re planning on going back to work. Pumping is for day care, “metime” and daddy’s share of feedings.
26 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
HOME AND BUDGET
14 15 16 17 18
You don't need to bathe your baby for the first few days. You may prefer to wash their face, neck, hands and bottom carefully instead.
Get a house cleaner. Yes, it may sound very ‘Dubai’, but there’s nothing worse than breastfeeding while staring at an un-vacuumed carpet or a grape juice stain.
Plan your budget. Balancing income and expenditure is no easy task, but it’s doable. For more tips on that, read more later this issue.
Make use of online shopping. You may find amazing deals and it’ll save you a crazy trip to the supermarket. Plus, it’s easier to spot essentials through automatically-generated ‘recommendations’. So baby is occupying one hand, but how many things can you do with the other? Plenty! From brushing an older child’s hair to texting and making spaghetti, say hello to multitasking.
SAFETY
19 20 21
Babies can’t regulate their body temperature until they’re six months old, so dress baby accordingly. They should wear the same amount of clothing as you, in layers.
Your baby’s safety is extremely important; make sure your car seat is properly installed, and ask for help if you’re not sure whether it is.
For eye drop time, lay your baby on their back and put a toy on their belly so they’ll look down. Place a drop on the inner corner of the eye, right by their nose. When they look up or open their eye, the drop will fall right in.
TIME WITH BABY
22 23 24 25 26 27 28
For the first two months, limit baby’s exposure. You don’t have to stay away from crowds at all times, but avoid overexposure, especially during flu season.
After that, travel! Yes, you heard us. Babies may cry, but compare that to toddler tantrums and you’ll understand why hopping on a plane with baby actually makes sense.
As they grow up, let them live! Let them climb, get dirty and play. Wrapping them in cotton wool will do them no good as they need to build up social and physical immunity.
When you finally leave the house, make sure you carry a shirt for you and changes of clothes for baby. Need we say more? You’ll need bumper packs of muslins. And plenty of them. From wiping dribbly mouths to protecting your shoulders, are you really ever safe?
Heard of baby wipes? What are we saying, of course you have! You’ll also need plenty for dubious stains on your shirt, wiping baby’s mouth and even cleaning the house.
Don’t be sad that this stage is passing. There’s more excitement to come as baby grows into a happy toddler and fun tween.
SLEEP
29 30 31
Test out different techniques when it comes to sleep, feeding time or even play time. Baby not happy while you’re rocking them in your arms? Try putting them against your shoulder. Whatever makes them happy… Spend time with baby! Time with baby means bonding time, so it’s less discussing grocery shopping while carrying baby on one hand and doing the laundry with the other, but rather 10 minutes of playtime.
Try this for instant mama-baby calm: rub lavender oil on the back of your neck, wrap baby in a blanket and bounce on a fitness ball or the edge of the bed.

Need an instant soother? Run the bathroom fan and faucet. Low noises remind your baby of hearing your heartbeat in the utero, hence calming them down.
Newborns sleep an average of 14 to 16 hours a day – a few hours at a time. Nap when baby naps, and start as soon as they do.
Have trouble napping? Try different techniques. Experiment with earplugs, an eye mask, or a white noise machine. You can even ask daddy to take baby for a stroll to ease the stress!
Always place your baby on their back on a firm mattress, never on plush mattresses, waterbeds, sofa cushions or any other soft surfaces. Sleep close to your baby, but not in the same bed – for safety reasons. Sleeping close to them regulates stress levels and immunity, and makes sleeping easier.
Try different sleeping arrangements. You’ll be hearing plenty of opinions, but there’s only one thumb rule to follow: “if your sleeping arrangement is keeping everybody up, change it.”

Make sure you get some time for yourself. Whether it's painting your nails, reading a book or calling a friend, if it makes you feel good, do it. Don’t forget to also make time for a little romance. Date nights are still a good idea, you’re still as beautiful post-partum as you were before.
When things get overwhelming, it’s ok to cry. Really, go ahead, it’s scientifically proven to make you feel better.
You’ll experience a range of emotions after baby arrives, from laughing until crying to drastic mood changes. Don’t be scared of them, to the contrary, you must embrace them. If you have a million things to do and you’re waiting for baby to nap so you can get to do them, then take advantage of any bit of free time you get to rest.
Have a daily goal. It’ll make you feel like you’re making progress if you could achieve something new daily, or even something you’ve always been doing, but in a shorter period of time. Get up and get dressed. If the first thing you do when you wake up is tend to baby’s every need, you’ll be in your PJs forever.
Let’s talk about pregnancy trackies. Are they pretty? No. Are they comfy? Maybe, but at what cost? Buy some size 16 clothes in cute styles and wear then until you get your pre-pregnancy body back. Celebrate the small achievements. You’ve managed to dress up or drink a hot cup of tea? With baby, that is HUGE, so give yourself some credit.
Work on non-baby tasks. We’re not talking massive spreadsheets, but rather small projects with plenty of lead time. You need to get your mind off strictly-baby tasks from time to time. Give up on ideals. Don’t think that your child will never be given anything to keep them quiet (a bribe or that you’ll never think of what it may have been like to remain childless. Seriously, we know how hard it can get. It gets better. All of it. Hang in there and enjoy those mama-baby moments in the dark for as long as you can because you’ll miss them later on.
Motherhood is not a competition. We may be pre-programmed to compete, but the real prize is already here, and it’s your baby – so slow down and enjoy! 28 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

ROAD SAFETY FOR CHILDREN By Natasha Bajaj
38 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Woman driving away onto the highway at 120km/hr; cut to scene two, she becomes a mother and the speed changes to 60km/hr. Welcome to motherhood, where the most important thing is your child’s safety. At this point, everything takes a back seat while your baby’s safety takes the front one. Motherhood changes the course of your driving for sure. Car accidents account for 40% of children’s deaths around the world. There’s no formula to stop this, but there are loads of preventive measures we can take to ensure our children’s safety: • Install the right type of car seat for your car • Always check if the seat is locked up properly • Maintain the right speed and keep checking on it • Use the hands-free • Stay at a safe distance from the next car and always slow down • Always use the child safety lock • Keep the baby car mirror for when you need to check on them, but don’t keep looking • Always check the temperature before sitting in the car • Never turn the music volume up too loud • Always have a spare tyre • Put a familiar toy in front of the baby every time you drive, but make sure it can’t lead to choking hazard • Be confident and happy when you drive It’s always better to know the tricks of the trade in case of emergencies. There are plenty of companies in Dubai which can talk to you about road safety and teach you the right preventive measures. Some of the schools in Dubai have also taken up road safety campaigns. Oaktree Primary School was the first school to participate in the 'Be a Road Safety Star' campaign, spearheaded by an RTA-approved vehicle testing centre in Dubai. “At Oaktree, we recognise the importance of Health and Safety in everything that we do. This, of course, extends beyond the time that the children spend in school. Potentially, one of the most hazardous parts of the day is when children are being transported to and from school and we want to make sure that children are empowered to know about road safety,” says Oaktree Primary School Founding Principal Christopher McDermott. Always remember, you should drive as if every child on the road were your own!

STRESS-FREE MAMA STAYING MINDFUL AND HEALTHY
"Making the decision to have a child – it’s momentous. It’s to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." Elizabeth Stone, Author
Have you heard of ‘mum stress’? Yes, mamas, it seems like they have a new term to describe this very special type of hectic lifestyle, but how stressed are you? You’re the centre of your family-verse, so take a deep breath and read on for tips on how to avoid getting stressed out. Memory Block
Forgot a playdate, to buy that toy or (gasp) a birthday? You’re only human, and as a mama you’re very likely to forget certain things given everything you’re handling. Do your best to make it up, but don’t go overboard, and come up with some strategies to remember next time. One-on-One Time
For many mothers, being 24/7 with their child is mandatory. Truth is, that’s not always possible, nor is it necessary. However, if you feel like you’re constantly missing your child, it’s time to take out the calendar and plan a special mama-baby outing with them. You can also try to maximise on the time you already spend together. The Best of the Best
Your child may not have the latest gadget or the greatest doll collection – and that’s okay. Instead of thinking about what’s missing, recognise what’s already there. Work as a family to regularly count your blessings and acknowledge what you’re grateful for. A Healthy Child
If your child is healthy and growing, then why worry? Maybe your child’s diet is among your concern for the right reasons, but it may also be entirely in your head. Track your family’s diet and make small tweaks if you feel necessary, but try not to feel too pressured. 40 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Missing a Game
There will always be a game, conference, recital, you name it. Can you really clone yourself to be in multiple places at once? We highly doubt it. It’s ok to miss that one performance. You can always record it and play it later with your child, encouraging them all along. Where’s My Me-Time?
You may occasionally feel like you need some time alone to refuel. And you do. There’s no reason to feel guilty over the fact that you’d like some me-time. Being the best version of yourself, a happy, healthy mama is also for your child. Your Child Won’t Thrive
Even as adults, we find our calling whenever it’s meant to be. If your child is having trouble with school, friendships or otherwise, give it some time while offering them all of the support they could need. Don’t worry, they’ll eventually catch up on their own. That Feeling
You watch the news, you’re always plugged in on social media and there are disasters everywhere. Yes, the unthinkable can happen, but that doesn’t mean it will. Understand that you and daddy are doing your best to keep your family safe and try to unwind away from it all every once in a while. Doing Your Best
Oh, but you are! Have you seen how happy the kids are? This is the verdict, right there. Being there for them and loving them IS giving it your all, so stop stressing and enjoy your time with the kids – every single moment of it.

The Nefertiti Neck seems to be an obsession now; we all want that elongated neck and perfect jaw, but what is it exactly and are the results permanent? Janna Thompson, Dubai
19 20
Even today, the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti is a symbol of beauty. Her striking jawline is something desired by many.
Nefertiti jaw line contouring is a non-surgical procedure and it’s performed using a combination of injectables. During the procedure, we reshape and enhance the jawline. I analyse the existing structure then identify key elements that need improvement.
I work on are the neck and jaw muscles. We relax these muscles to give a sharp contour. Then comes enhancing, augmenting and defining the jawbone using fillers; this gives definition to the jawline.

25
It’s a very simple and painless procedure. The results are long-lasting, but not permanent and can last from 6 – 12 months, depending on the patient’s lifestyle. When hyaluronic acid is injected under the skin, our bodies produce natural collagen, which stays there for long and results in healthier skin.
The best candidate for the procedure is someone between 20 – 40 years old who is looking for a striking and beautiful jawline. The results show immediately, but the final result comes into effect within 5 – 7 days. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MARCH 2017 | 43

LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT & YOUR TODDLER
As soon as her baby starts to say his first words, a mother is delighted, amazed and curious. This little human is beginning to express himself, his emotions, fears and needs. The onset of verbal communication is a turning point for young children, so what is the best way to encourage positive language and effective communication at home? 44 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Promoting communication and language development at a young age is very important as it plays a crucial role in enabling children to understand, organise and retrieve rules which contribute to emotional and behavioural regulation.
“Language is a way of expressing one’s own behaviour and emotions and reacting to that of others,” explains Suha Alshuaibat, head of the Speech and Language Department at Camali Clinic Dubai, which offers child and adolescent mental health services. “Children who are able to say: ‘I am mad’ or ‘I am sad’ are more likely to gain the support and understanding of adults than those who throw temper tantrums or become violent.”
“Temper tantrums are common in preverbal children; when a toddler lashes out, they are telling you in the only way they know that something is bothering them.”
What is the most common language development problem in the UAE?
Interestingly, due to the diversity and high number of bilingual homes in the UAE, one commonlyfaced problem is developmental issues caused by parents not sticking to one language when raising their young child, which may lead to various communication difficulties on the long run.
“For a pre-schooler, speech and language challenges can include difficulty in understanding gestures and various concepts, identifying objects and pictures, answering questions, constructing sentences and following directions among other issues. Such issues can, not only slow down the affected children’s learning graph, but also make it difficult for them to express themselves properly, leading to frustration,” explains Kate Hedger, special educational needs coordinator at British Orchard Nursery. “Children’s experiences at home, age-appropriate learning activities and parent-child bonding are critical to speech and language growth, essential in developing their academic and social skills.”
Here are the top three parental tips for communicating well with a toddler:
1.
Don’t just point and grunt
Children are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. While it may be easier for a child to point at a toy and coo at it, and easy for parents to simply hand it over to them, a simple exercise will help stimulate conversation. Try to prompt and wait for any response, praise it and raise the bar at each stage.
2.
Avoid Baby Talk
Avoiding baby talk and using adult language with your toddler will develop and challenge their language skills. You can pretend that you don’t understand what your child’s non-verbal language means.
We may understand that phrases like ‘num num’ mean ‘I’m hungry!’ and it will be easier to give your child food, but to develop your toddler’s speech, ask them what they mean. Don’t underestimate your children – sometimes asking for a clarification is the push they need to get their communication going.
3.
Don’t feel alone – try parent sessions
Parent education sessions need to be planned and should follow a similar sequence each time, engaging parents in a short, motivating, introductory activity then presenting new information, processing the information through activities and helping parents apply new information.
Such sessions provide opportunities for parents to learn about their child’s language and literacy development, as well as opportunities to discuss and gain the skills to support this development. Often, parent education sessions provide the opportunity to dispel common misconceptions regarding children’s positive language and literacy development. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MARCH 2017 | 45
EDUCATION Featured PRINCIPAL
Heather Mann Dubai British School Jumeirah Park (DBSJP) What are your principles and values when it comes to running the school?
This is an easy question to answer as it’s at the heart of all decisions and actions. For me it’s simple, ‘the students come first’. This may sound obvious, but in the day-to-day running of a busy school what’s in the best interest for children’s development and progress can get sidelined. Sometimes, this means parents and staff having to take a different look at things and being flexible with their own plans and needs. What inspires you when it comes to managing and improving the school environment and encouraging students?
Every day, as I walk the school and spend time in classes, I’m inspired by the joy of learning that you can see on young children’s faces and the eagerness to find out more by asking even deeper questions from the older students. There’s no better motivation to continually improve than being around creative and enquiring children and young adults. What aspect of your school are you most proud of?
At DBSJP, our students are making amazing progress in all aspects of their learning, academic and social development due to the dedicated team of professionals who go above and beyond every single day. We have children who hated their previous school, but now skip into the building eager to learn. 46 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
What are your thoughts on technology-based learning vs. more time outdoors?
Where would we be without technology? We have to face the fact that we can’t live without it and for certain, there will be more of it around in the future not less. Children of today will be using technology in their working lives which hasn’t even been invented yet. Therefore, children need to learn to use technology appropriately and for the right purpose. This doesn’t mean spending hours in front of a digital screen or being tethered to the internet 24 hours a day. We all know the importance and benefits of getting outdoors, it’s a key ingredient to well-being and happiness. It’s a balance. I recommend that parents set a limit on screen time, and for the whole family to have a ‘no phones after bedtime’ rule. Do you think we will eventually adopt a no-homework policy in UAE schools?
Homework has always been a controversial issue. Some parents and teachers see huge benefits, while others are against it. Current research and trends against homework may well be challenged in the future. I don’t believe it’s wise to have a UAE-wide policy on homework; should be school-specific, tailored to the wishes of the school community. How do you see the recent school fee hikes and how has your school adopted them?
At DBSJP, we’ve had no increase in school fees. In fact, there’s currently a discount applied to all families and a sibling discount applied to families with three children. If students were to describe your school, what would they say is their favourite aspect?
We regularly ask students their views. A high number talk passionately about their teachers and the way they support them and make learning fun. Many children talk about all of the additional opportunities they have been given, particularly the leadership roles and responsibilities they have been trusted with.

EDUCATION
Ask the My 4-year-old likes to stay home and play with his kids' tablet, even when on vacation. He hates the outdoors and rejects all types of activities which require any movement. How can I encourage him to play sports and kickstart some healthy physical development? – Janna Thompson, Dubai
Your child needs to know who’s the authority in this relationship. If you’re allowing him to carry on playing with the tablet even after making suggestions of other activities, then he’s going to think that he’s in control. A parent should always be the one to take control of a situation! A tablet shouldn’t be used as a soother for children who have not had enough sleep or as a substitute to being active. It should definitely be limited to a maximum of one hour a day for 2 to 5-year-olds and they should really only be watching high quality educational programmes, which you’re able to watch with them. It’s very important that your son gets some form of exercise as this will make his muscles and bones stronger and he’ll be less likely to become overweight as he grows up. Have you tried organising playdates with some school friends at your local park or going for 48 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
a ride on his bike/scooter? There are also lots of ECAs which you can enquire about in your local area. If he sees his friends participating in these activities, this should hopefully encourage your son to do the same. What physical activities does he do at school and does he participate in these? Is this just 'a phase' that he is going through at home? We’ve all heard the phrase 'you have to be cruel to be kind' and in parenting there is no truer a word said.

Kings’ School’s Monthly Tips
How to Help
YOUR CHILD
Thrive in Foundation Stage 1
Congratulations on making the leap to FS1! Rebecca Mundy, Head of Foundation at Kings' School Al Barsha, answers some common questions on helping your child feel confident, safe and happy at their new school. Starting FS1 can be nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time. How can my child and I learn to embrace it?
FS1 is a magical time in a child’s life and an opportunity for them to develop into a lifelong learner. We work closely with parents to ensure children are provided with a strong foundation for learning as they move towards FS2 and beyond. Describe a typical day in the life of an FS1 student at Kings’.
Our school day begins at around 8 am, when FS parents will bring their child to the classroom and have an opportunity to speak to the class teacher and share any important messages. Upon arrival, children are encouraged to independently put away all of their belongings and get ready to start the day. We then register all the children and sing the UAE National Anthem. Next, our children wake up their brains and bodies by engaging with ‘squiggle while you wiggle’ or ‘dough disco’, which promote gross and fine motor skills to get them ready for writing. During the rest of the day, the children will have some teacher-led phonics and maths sessions and participate in ChiL (child-initiated learning) time, where they can access our indoor and outdoor learning environments. Children in FS1 also have weekly music, swimming, PE and library sessions. Our day finishes with story time and children are collected from the classroom at 1 pm. How long does it take to settle, on average, and what can parents do to help?
Joining a school is a huge learning transition for children. They are MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | MARCH 2017 | 49
EDUCATION exposed to new and high expectations and it can often take time for them to respond to those boundaries at school. Children may take some time to settle and there may be some issues in the beginning as children are learning how to manage their own emotions and behaviour.
Newsflash!
KINGS' school TO OFFER SIXTH FORM
As a school, we will communicate any issues with parents and work together to ensure we are supporting the child to build relationships and manage their own behaviour in and outside of school. What can parents do at home to help children thrive in FS1?
It’s a saying that the best gift we can give to anybody is our time, but this is especially true for our young children. A child’s brain is 85% developed by the age of five, so it’s incredibly important we give them a strong foundation to become lifelong learners. We would ask all parents to spend time with their children – talking, listening and sharing experiences with them. It’s also so important that parents encourage children to be independent and have high expectations of them. If we believe that children can be successful, then they’ll achieve and believe in themselves. Please encourage your children to feed and dress themselves and take ownership of their belongings, as we expect this of all children from the very beginning of FS1. Parents should read to their children and model using imaginative and rich language as children can only ever say words they hear and are exposed to. Finally, it’s also important to encourage your child to spend time outdoors and build up core strength in their bodies. 50 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Choosing the Right
SPRING CAMP for Your Child
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to spring camps. For your child's camp time activities, your choices can range from robotics and chemistry lab to flower arranging and exploring the jungle. Here’s how to find the right camp where your child will experience fulfilling activities, making friends and gaining confidence along the way. • Think of the basics first. Is the camp running for a few hours a day only, or has it been tailored to fit working parents’ schedules? • Choose around your child’s interests. Don’t send them off to something where they won’t be able to have fun while learning. If they don’t have any preferences, choose a traditional camp with plenty of options. • Bear in mind the camp style or culture. Are you looking for one which would welcome parents or something that focuses only on the kids? If you’d like to spend more time with your tots, you’ll have to make sure they can accommodate that. • Seek qualified, trained staff. It goes without saying that camp staff should know the basics of taking care of children, but what about first aid, CPR or location-specific training against natural disasters, intruders and other threats? • Make sure your children are ready. Discussing the camp with your children can provide some insight into their preferences. They should get to back their lunch and backpack; this will also help them calm down knowing what they have and might need. • Find out if your children’s friends would like to attend the same camp, and check out what they’ll be doing if they wouldn’t. Maybe they’ll inspire you to explore a bit further?

EDUCATION
FUN AND EDUCATION at the Nursery
The Coolest Nursery Programmes in the UAE When it comes to keeping the kids entertained while teaching them values and developing their skills, nurseries in Dubai always come up with the coolest of ideas. From yoga to funky gymnastics, here are some nursery programmes we love:
YOGA AT LADYBIRD Kids are not exactly known for being Zen, but a nursery in town begs to differ. Toddlers at Ladybird Nursery & Ladybird Early Learning Centre are responding positively to the benefits of yoga, from increased concentration in their lessons and better strength and coordination to improved sleeping habits. ladybirdnurserydubai 60 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
GYMNASTICS AT MILESTONES Children’s physical development is as important as their openended experiences. A child can’t sit and listen to stories or hold a marker without a developed core, or arms and hand muscles. So, in order to facilitate physical development Milestones Nursery hosts ‘Monkeynastix’ once a week where children are exposed to a special pre-gymnastics programme designed to support muscle-building and improve posture. In addition, they offer ‘Soccerstarz’ football classes where they develop kids’ coordination skills and balance.

FLEXIBILITY AT BRITISH ORCHARD GymJuniorz at British Orchard Nursery is the first indoor gym programme for children, and it promotes strength, flexibility, agility, coordination and self-confidence. The 1-hour long class includes a warm-up and stretch to improve flexibility and prevent injury, an aerobic workout to music to improve fitness and coordination, a gymnastic skill session which varies depending on age and skill level, a fitness circuit to improve balance, strength, and confidence and more. British.Orchard.Nursery.Official
BABY YOGA AT JUMEIRAH INTERNATIONAL NURSERIES (JINS)
Baby yoga is incorporated into JINS’ nursery programmes to play a positive role in children’s development, especially for their physical and emotional well-being.
Sensory play is also part of regular JINS’ nursery programmes as it plays a crucial part in the development of young babies, as they are limited by their mobility, but not in their ability to interact with their surroundings. Additionally, the Russian Kids’ Club is for children aged eight months to seven years old. Russian language is introduced through an accelerated learning methodology. Prices for the lessons start from AED 89.

YOGA FOR BABIES
EDUCATION
What Are the Benefits?
Mother, Baby & Child interviews Livia Anzaldo, CEO & founder of Yoga Retreats, a company which organises plenty of classes for mothers with their children, for a look into this new trend that’s got us wondering, can yoga really be good for baby too?
Where did the idea behind baby yoga even come from? Babies experience being rocked by their mothers throughout pregnancy. After birth, gentle movement and touch are the basis of synaesthesia – the integration of sensory experience – or the way babies unify their sensory experiences in general through an emotional interaction with their parents or trusted carers. What are the physical benefits of baby yoga? • In one short daily session, babies receive as much physical activity as if they were engaged for a few hours. • Baby yoga promotes more and better sleep. • Regular movement promotes a more ‘settled’ behaviour with less extreme ups and downs. Can yoga have any effect on baby’s development? • The baby’s bodily systems are stimulated, including the digestive and nervous systems. • Baby yoga keeps babies content between feeds and helps alleviate wind and colic. • It reduces babies’ frustration in the transition from one developmental stage to another, while assisting their transitions. • Tactile stimulation has been shown to contribute to the development of the brain and the nervous system. What about the psychological aspect? • Baby yoga helps the parent and baby to get to know each other better through active means of communication which are easy to learn and practice. • New challenges introduced at a pace that babies can absorb and integrate increase their ability to positively cope with new situations. • Active interaction with parents is the foundation for future positive social relations during the early years and beyond. • Joint relaxation is mutually beneficial for parents and babies and enhances non-verbal communication between them. GREEN MAMA Tips for Going Zero-Waste with Kids
Diaper changes, extra cleaning…having a baby makes an environmentally-friendly lifestyle sound impossible. The good news is, you can still maintain a waste-free life, even with kids running around or a new baby at home. Here are some practical ideas: WASHCLOTHS NOT WIPES We know, we know, you’re crazy about baby wipes – and so are we, but if you find yourself filling up one-litre trash cans with dirty wipes then it’s time to reconsider. A good washcloth will last for ages. All you need is warm water and soap, or mix up a natural solution of organic soap and scented essential oils. NATURAL SKINCARE AND HEALTH PRODUCTS Babies and kids’ skin needs natural, gentle products. While buying packaged products is inevitable, you can also try to occasionally use the real stuff. Diaper rash? Bring out the olive or coconut oil. These can always be bought in glass jars or reusable containers. Use a neti pot or reusable handkerchiefs for stuffy noses.
r u o Y t r Sta ’ Green Kidshapter C
SCHOOL TIME Ask your kids’ teacher to cut on paper. They can send only necessary papers home with the kids, and opt for soft copies. Also, simplify and reuse lunch containers for kids’ lunchtime at school; you can use stainless steel containers or wrap contents in a kitchen towel ‘furoshiki’ style. GET CREATIVE WITH BABY FOOD You can always make your own baby food. Look up simple, healthy recipes – which usually have a very short list of ingredients. Make large batches, store in reusable containers, or freeze in an ice cube tray before transferring to a container. TELL FAMILY AND FRIENDS Instead of buying you piles of products you may not need, tell them to give you ‘free babysitting’ coupons instead. You can thank us later.

BUDGETING Planning for Baby’s First Year By Lucy Holmes
A new baby means excitement, endless to-do lists and much more – but budgeting for their first year is one of the first tasks you’ll need to get to.
There are estimates that it can cost between AED 1.26 and AED 2.52 million to raise a child to the age of 18 in the UAE. Therefore, it’s essential that from pregnancy onwards you’re organised and budget carefully for this considerable, but worthwhile investment. 68 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
HERE ARE MY KEY TIPS! PLAN
I always love a spreadsheet, so for my second arrival, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I started a budget tracker on a simple Excel document (you can download plenty of these online if you’re not an Excel geek) which tracked requirements, how much to save each month, budgets for items and was spread over time leading up to my due date.
ASSESS
Review what you already have access to in terms of gear. If this is your first, perhaps you have friends who are looking to donate items they no longer need or that they’ve hardly used. If it’s not your first, then check on what’s still usable from your other child to help establish exactly what new items you’ll need to invest in.
BE SENSIBLE
A lot, and I mean a lot, of items are in the bracket of ‘nice to have’ and are not essentials. There’s plenty of information on gear lists and what to buy, but to get real and honest advice turn to a friend who’s recently had a baby. Even if this is not your first, it can often help to discuss with a new mum who’s in the best position to advise whether you need cot cushions and disposable underwear!
BECOME AN EXPERT
Study up momma! Learn about safety in terms of car seats, bathing, room temperature and more. I also love to read reviews of every item I buy and really spend time to think before I invest. This also helps to avoid buying items you’ll end up returning like 10 cot cushions you won’t (ever) use. Let’s face it, they’re not that safe for a newborn baby!
REVIEW OVERSEAS OPTIONS
It’s unfortunate, but true, that a lot of the big brands are cheaper overseas, even with shipping. Investigate these options via your favourite websites from your home country or Amazon/Shop & Ship. If you have family visiting from overseas who can help with the logistics of bringing these items, hire them as personal storks to deliver the items for you!
WAIT
There’s a lot of superstition and tradition over when and what to buy, but in practical terms it makes sense to only start buying items from 20 weeks onwards. If you’re planning a baby shower, then a lot of essentials can be added to your gift registry. You’ll be given a lot of clothes, so avoid buying a full wardrobe of outfits for your little one, just buy the essentials.
HAVE FUN!
This is a lovely time of your life, so don’t forget to enjoy choosing these items and get excited by imagining your new bundle of joy safely carried in that gorgeous new car seat.

Easy Ways to Update Your Kid’s Room Kids are known for their eternal messiness, and their room is no exception. With a few toys here, clothes on the floor there and some random items scattered everywhere, you’ll often think it’s easier to just leave it all and clean any other room in the house instead.
Truth is, the more organised, clean and fun your kid’s room is, the better you’ll feel and the easier it’ll be for them to spend time in it. Here are some ways through which you can update your kid’s room without breaking the bank:
CHOOSE TIMELESS PIECES
It’s very tempting to go for mass-produced, easy-to-assemble furniture, but when it comes to practicality, this type falls short very often. You’ll find yourself buying more and more items to compensate, and ending up with one mess of a room. Buy quality, timeless furniture instead and you’ll also find it holds up for much longer. 74 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
CREATE AN INDOOR PLAY AREA
Kids love play areas and – surprisingly – many parents don’t think about that when designing their rooms. Plan for play with plenty of open room space, bean bags, hanging bubble chairs, etc.

HUSH, LITTLE BABY Creating the Right Sleep Environment
Every mum knows, getting a baby to sleep can be very difficult. Getting them to stay asleep can be even harder at times. Exasperated by middle-of-the-night feedings, baby’s sleep can be heavily disrupted. Given how important sleep is for their development, here are some ways to help them sleep through the night.
76 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
BABY SLEEPS IN YOUR ROOM
Ideally, baby should sleep in your room, but in their own crib, bassinette or a surface designed for infants – at least for the first six months – to facilitate easy feeding and decrease the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
GETTING THE LIGHTING RIGHT
• Just like adults, babies need dimmer lighting to be able to sleep properly. Make sure any nightlights in the room, if any, emit very low lighting.
• If your baby wakes during the night and needs a feeding or a diaper change, keep the lights as dim as possible. • Televisions, laptops, smartphones and tablets shouldn’t be used in the bedroom right before bed as they all inhibit the production of melatonin.
KEEPING IT COOL
Scientists have yet to agree on the optimum temperature humans need to sleep in, but keeping the temperature on the cooler side will ensure your body doesn’t have to work hard to cool your warm body temperature down. Always check on baby to make sure they’re not perspiring or that their skin doesn’t feel too warm. The ideal room temperature for a baby is between 18 to 21 degrees Celsius.
TOO QUIET IN HERE
Newborns are used to the noise in your womb, hence total silence is confusing to them. White noise machines mimic those sounds and can help your baby sleep.
WHAT’S THAT SMELL?
The smell of new furniture or a recently-painted home can bother babies as it’s quite unpleasant for them. Air our anything you put in your bedroom and use chemical-free paint designed for children’s rooms. Washing your baby’s bedclothes in detergent that has fragrance may also bother your baby.
THIS IS WHERE BABY SLEEPS
It’s important to create an association in baby’s head with the place they sleep in. Try to be consistent and not have them sleep in many different places. They also need to know that their crib/bed is for sleeping and nothing else. A child’s sleep environment is much more important than you think, and small changes can make a big difference. Consider all of these small steps, and apply them one by one, to create an overall change that will help your baby sleep better.

Why Organic is the Right Choice for Mothers New UAE Concept Brings Organic to Your Doorstep
Choosing organic-certified foods is becoming more popular in the UAE and that is primarily due to the increasing availability of such foods and better awareness over their benefits. Research has found that organic produce is one of the best choices you can make for your children, reducing the risk of exposure to toxic pesticides and harmful chemicals. Our children are more susceptible to disease, with developing immune systems and a tendency to eat more foods – like apples and bananas – than we do. Here, Mother, Baby & Child interviews Romain Ollivier and Charles Dalle, co-founders of new UAE concept Farmbox, which promises fresh, 100% organic fruits and vegetables delivered weekly straight to your door – and they even have a special mums’ box! Tell us, why have you decided to start this company?
We were looking to find European-quality organic fruits and vegetables, so we decided to source produce ourselves based on our solid knowledge of the farm network in Europe. Why should mamas subscribe to receive this box?
We offer a hassle-free European fruit and vegetable delivery service which is much cheaper and fresher than supermarkets, when you shop European Organic, with contents changing every week. The delivery is recurring and automatic, so mothers wouldn’t have to worry about a thing.
Mums have a fast-paced lifestyle with a lot of things to take care of! We are helping them with their daily routine by doing their fruit and vegetable shopping, offering the healthiest produce available in UAE for their families. Why have you decided to create the ‘Mum’s Veggie Box’ and what does it include?
We wanted to help mothers feed their kids the right vegetables. This box packs a colourful array of organic seasonal delights to put veggies centre stage, making it easier to feed even the pickiest of eaters. We also offer many other box types for mothers to choose from. Our concept is growing extremely quickly. We launched only a month ago and already have 500+ subscribers. We get an average of 15/20 new clients every day.

HEALTH The brain is one of the most important and delicate organs in the human body. It’s protected from direct external injuries by a tough structure – the skull bone – acting as its natural helmet.
How to Handle Head Injuries in Children By Dr Vishal Pawar
Neurology Specialist, Aster Specialty Clinic, International City 84 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
How do I handle a head injury? What can a head injury do?
Depending on their severity, head injuries can disrupt the integrity of the skull bone and cause damage to the brain. Minor head injuries are prevalent among people of all ages, especially during childhood and adolescence as it’s common for youngsters to bump or bang their heads. It’s often difficult to tell if the injury is serious or not by looking at a bump or a bruise. Almost all children bump their heads every now and then. While such injuries can be extremely upsetting for the parent, most injuries during childhood are sustained to the scalp, even though wounds may look scary.
A cut, bruise, bump, swelling or anything else to the head is classified as an injury. Falls are the most common cause for non-fatal injuries in children. Accidents, child abuse, trauma, etc. are also among the causes of fatal head injuries. Children and adolescents between the ages of 0-4 and 15-19 are at the highest risk of head injuries. There are two types: external, like the scalp, and internal head injuries. It’s important for a parent or caretaker to understand the difference between the two to know which injuries can be cured with a simple treatment at home and which ones require immediate medical attention.
Once a parent notices a head injury, they tend to overlook any others which the child may have. Injuries to the spine or neck, breathing issues, severe bleeding, etc. are other major injuries which require immediate medical attention.
An external injury is one which occurs when there is a minor bump or swelling on the head. Sometimes, there may be a small cut that could cause bleeding. Symptoms of a minor injury may include feeling only transient symptoms like a headache, dizziness, etc.
All of these symptoms should be monitored for at least 24 hours to ensure that a mild injury does not turn into a severe one. A child’s reaction to an injury will depend on its type and severity. In the case of a mild injury, parents should keep a close watch on the child and note the symptoms. If the child is an infant and has lost consciousness, doesn’t stop crying or is constantly vomiting, they must be taken to a doctor at the earliest.
If the child is a little older and seems normal after the injury, they need to be observed for at least 24 hours. A parent will know when their child is not acting normal, and in the case of any suspicions, it’s always best to consult a specialist for an expert opinion.
Internal head injuries are those involving the brain, skull and the blood vessels within the skull. They can be caused by experiencing a severe blow to the head, a vehicle accident, falling on a hard surface from a certain height, etc. A parent must look for visible symptoms like bleeding from ear, nose or mouth, a visible, serious wound, vomiting, a severe headache, difficulty walking and with balance, irregular or abnormal breathing, a disturbance in speech and vision, changes in behaviour, loss of consciousness, a seizure (fits), if the child is feeling numb or weak, etc. In any of these cases, it’s evident that the child would require immediate medical assistance.
A parent or caretaker must not administer a treatment unless it’s sure to help. With babies who haven’t started talking or walking yet, any visible bulges could be a sign that medical aid is required.

H E A LT H What’s a concussion and how do I handle it?
Accidents causing an acceleration or deceleration of the head or a severe blow to the head/ neck can cause the brain to violently move or shake. Such injuries may affect the functioning of the brain for a brief period of time and are called concussions.
Different children react differently to concussions, but the most common symptoms are dizziness, nausea, headaches, etc. In case of younger children, they tend to sleep longer or become irritable and cry continuously. Constant crankiness, seizures, vomiting, a change in eating patterns and tiredness are other symptoms of concussions. Symptoms of concussions may sometimes appear on the same day, a day or two later or even after a week.
Being observant of changes in a child’s appearance and behaviour is key to understanding the issue. The treatment of concussions depends on the severity of the condition. Some require hospitalisation, while others can be treated at home for which a specialist may provide the necessary remedies. Concussions may lead to serious consequences if not treated appropriately at the right time.
How can I prevent head injuries?
In many cases, head injuries and concussions can be prevented. Incidents like a fall or bump on the head may not be preventable, but being cautious and keeping an eye on the child at all times is advisable and will help reduce risks to a great extent.
Safety begins at home, be it bed safety, or baby proofing risky edges and corners like the edges of a table, staircases etc. In the case of travelling in vehicles with younger children, parents must use the right car safety measures by installing car seats depending on age and needs. Wearing appropriate head gear while playing sports is essential to avoid any head injury in older children. Following some simple steps can help prevent serious injuries; following a specialist’s advice can minimise the aftereffects of any injury.

20 Tips
for a Comfier 3rd Trimester
Kamal Dasani
Take it easy! Rest and don’t be too hard on yourself; you’re growing a human after all! Keep your feet up to reduce swelling and aches. Use a pregnancy body pillow to sleep at night, ensuring your bump is supported. Cut back on fluids in the evening to reduce bathroom visits at night. Cut out caffeine as not only does it reduce your sleep, but it also inhibits iron intake. Eat small portions and chew slowly to avoid getting heartburn. Avoid acidic, carbonated, fatty or spicy foods as they are causes of heartburn. Drink ginger tea, peppermint tea or milk to reduce heartburn and don’t be afraid to use one of the many heartburn medications available after consulting your doctor.
Try to keep your shoulders and head slightly elevated when sleeping to reduce heartburn.
Avoid clothes that put pressure on your bump. Use a pregnancy band or body suit to support your bump’s weight and reduce backache. Try a warm bath before bed – this is believed to relax your muscles, leading to a better sleep and reducing the likelihood of cramps. 88 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Run a humidifier in the bedroom to reduce the discomfort of swollen nasal passages, snoring and dry throats. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times to stay hydrated. Keep your skin hydrated with creams or sprays to reduce itchiness on your bump, hands and feet. Don’t exercise too close to bedtime as both you and baby will be too alert. Kara Cooper, speech and language pathologist at the American Wellness Center in Dubai Healthcare City, recommends you speak to your baby as it is proven to have a soothing effect. A calmer baby may mean a better night’s sleep! Attend a birthing class with your partner so that you’re not as stressed about the hospital or delivery procedures. You’ll also learn a lot from the midwives who run the class which will help calm your thoughts over the 3rd trimester and delivery. Nancy Hage, psychologist at the American Wellness Center, recommends getting connected to a group of friends who are pregnant and due around the same time as you are. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help and accept others’ offers to help; you don’t need to do it all alone.” Have a walk about if you’re uncomfortable or having Braxton Hicks contractions. Changing your position or going for a short walk can relief aches and pains. Have your birth plan or ‘wish list’ ready, and your hospital bag packed. Having the nursery prepared and all of the essentials at home will also help you relax. Treat yourself to little luxuries like massages, pedicures, etc. so that you can relax and unwind before your new addition to the family arrives.

KEEPING KIDS AND BABIES SAFE SIMPLE FIRST AID TIPS YOU NEED TO KNOW ALLERGIC REACTION? Dealing with an emergency is something you’ll have to do a lot as a mum. More often than not, your child will have visible symptoms which you don’t recognise, or will require a trip to Emergency. Here’s what you’ll need to do while seeking/ waiting for medical assistance. 90 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
The baby or child may develop a rash, itchiness or swelling on their hands, feet or face. If it’s a known allergy, use their auto-injector as indicated. If not, reassure them and make them as comfortable as possible.
ASTHMA ATTACK? The baby or child will wheeze and have difficulty breathing.
Help them sit in a comfortable position while taking their medication, and reassure them.
BROKEN BONE? If following a fall or blow, your baby or child is lying in an unnatural position or is in a lot of pain, then they may have a broken bone. Support the injury with something soft, like clothing or cushions, to prevent further unnecessary movement. Continue supporting the injury until help arrives.
FEVER?
CHOKING? According to the British Red Cross, for a baby:
1
“Give up to five back blows. Hold the baby face down along your thigh with their head lower than their bottom. Hit them firmly on their back between the shoulder blades up to five times. If back blows do not dislodge the object, move on to step two.”
2
Step Two: “Give up to five chest thrusts. Turn the baby over so they are facing upwards and place two fingers in the middle of their chest just below the nipples. Push sharply downwards up to five times.” For a child:
1 2
“Give up to five back blows. Hit them firmly on their back between the shoulder blades. If back blows do not dislodge the object, move on to step two.” Step Two: Give up to five abdominal thrusts. Hold the child around the waist and pull inwards and upwards above their belly button.”
A raised temperature is anything above 37°C. They may also have hot, flushed skin and start sweating. Use a thermometer to check their temperature. Remove excess clothes and give them fluids such as water or diluted juice. You may also give the recommended dose of medication as prescribed by doctor.
BURNS?
HEAVILY BLEEDING? Put pressure on the wound with any available resource to stop or slow down the flow of blood. Keep the pressure so it doesn’t start to bleed again and try to calm down.
NOSEBLEED? It may occur from a blow to the nose or the child picking it. Pinch the soft part of their nose and ask them to lean forward, then continue pinching for 10 minutes.
a
VOMITING OR DIARRHOEA?
A baby or child who vomits repeatedly or goes to the toilet very frequently is at risk of severe dehydration.
Give them drinks of (cooled off) drinks of boiled water and encourage them to drink small sips often. Let them rest.
Quickly cool them off under running cold water for at least 10 minutes. After it’s been cooled, cover with cling film or a clean plastic bag.
POISONING? Ingested harmful substances?
These include alcohol, chemicals (including household cleaning products) and more. Establish what they have taken, when and how much before seeking immediate help.

10 ESSENTIAL HEALTH TIPS FOR EXPAT MUMS IN THE UAE By Afra Nolan
Living in this beautiful city with harsh weather at times may leave mums and their children constantly falling ill. Sometimes, it’s the change from summer to winter (or vice versa), sandstorms, humidity or just moving between air conditioned buildings and cars to the warm, dry heat outdoors.
Whichever the case, children and parents seem to regularly suffer from colds and coughs – so here are some tips which have helped my kids and I stay healthy and avoid being at the doctor’s all the time:
FLUIDS:
The key to a healthy mind and body. My children and I have recently started drinking coconut water as its liquid is packed with simple sugars, electrolytes and minerals to replenish dehydration inside the human body. In fact, my 7-month-old and I recently got food poisoning and I couldn't believe how quickly we recovered after sipping coconut water throughout. 92 | MARCH 2017 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
CLEAN HANDS:
Regular hand-washing dramatically reduces the passing of respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, so get your children in the habit of scrubbing up when they leave nursery or school, after every playdate and before they eat. Teach them to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to themselves twice before rinsing, and scrubbing for 15-20 seconds is key.
AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE:
Cold and flu viruses enter the body through the nose, eyes, and mouth, so help your child keep their hands away from these areas. Yes, it can be very difficult to accomplish, but hand-washing in strategic moments is all the more important. Teach your child to never share a straw, cup or spoon.
A BALANCED AND HEALTHY DIET:
We all struggle with this one, but meals with plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables will help boost your child's immune system. Look for foods rich in vitamin C (broccoli, strawberries and oranges) and vitamin D (tuna, fortified milk and cereals). Eating yogurt with active cultures (probiotics) can also help build defences.
‘RAW’ HONEY:
Or so says Dr Oz! The kids can eat it straight from the jar and adults can add a spoon to their tea. Not only is it anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, but honey also reduces cough and throat irritation and helps regulate blood sugar. My kids have it two to three times a week.
Raw honey is the unpasteurised version of more commonly used honey, but with added filtration, which mainly helps extend shelf life.
HEATHY MOVEMENT:
Take advantage of the good weather while it lasts. Be physically active for 30 minutes on most days of the week. Break this up into three 10-minute sessions when pressed for time. Healthy movement may include walking, sports, dance, yoga, running or other activities you enjoy.
Not to mention, your kids will love a little back rub as part of their bedtime routine.
MULTIVITAMINS:
Once you have checked with your doctor, look for one with 100% of the recommended daily values of vitamins A, B6, B12, C, and D and the minerals chromium, copper, folic acid, selenium, calcium and zinc. Take your vitamins during a meal which contains a bit of fat so you can absorb the nutrients better; a glass of water will help the pill dissolve.
HAND SANITISER:
Give your child alcohol-based hand sanitiser to keep in their backpack. Remind them to use it before eating snacks or lunch and after using a shared computer, pencil sharpener, water fountain or other shared objects. Keep a supply of disinfecting wipes in your child's cubby/locker at school.
SLEEP:
"As soon as I feel an illness coming on, I go to sleep for at least nine hours," says Hilda Hutcherson, MD, clinical professor of ob-gyn at Columbia University Medical Center. Getting enough sleep is the most important thing to do because any other precautions you take against fighting any illness – the right food, supplements, even vaccinations – won’t offer the same protection if your body's too tired to use them properly. Easier said than done, but we should aim for at least six hours of sleep every night, if not longer.
MASSAGE THERAPY:
Shown to improve immune function and energy levels in patients, a weekly kneading, whether it's a professional massage or simply a back rub from your significant other, can also increase serotonin and dopamine, which are mood boosters that may help protect your immunity.
