Back-to-school season is finally here and, while many parents over the world anticipate a change to a much busier lifestyle, Dubai parents are more concerned about the recent school fee hike.
SALES MANAGER: Mathew Tharakan
The rank-based inflation means that, for example, Dubai’s 16 schools ranked as Outstanding in the Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) inspection report are qualified to increase fees by up to 6.42 per cent, as per the KHDA’s fee framework.

For many parents, taking the children back home for school is the only option – and it can often mean one parent stays back in Dubai. For others, leaving may seem like a more feasible plan. Experts at recruitment consultancies are constantly referring to rumours of a potential mass exodus due to rising costs of living in the emirate. However, education experts are highlighting more positive factors, including how the fee hike indicates schools’ efforts to maintain current standards of education – and even surpass them. Let us all look forward to school season and take the time to evaluate what we are really expecting from our schools!

AN Alternative EDUCATION NEW EDUCATIONAL CONCEPTS IN DUBAI
10 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
EDUCATION & CHILD DEVELOPMENT Choosing where our children would acquire knowledge and life skills is not easy. No matter how many articles we publish on the “right” nursery or school if, as a parent, you do not feel it in your heart that your children are getting the education they deserve, nothing else will ever matter.
T
his is what happened with some mothers in Dubai. Inspired by education back home and their very own ideologies and beliefs, they set out to find something different. For Cecilia Lawrence, a Swedish mother-of-two, she had noticed what she calls “parental cultural clashes” early on. “My British husband and I have been living in the UAE for ten years and have always embraced the cultural diversity and differences. Only when I became a mother did I begin to realise some factors; the way we look at education and treat children in Sweden and Scandinavia is very, very different from the way things are done in Dubai,”she explained. To the mother, it seemed as though there was no familiarisation or gradual settling-in periods for young children. According to Cecilia, there is a very gradual introduction to nurseries and schools in Sweden, where parents are actively involved to ensure the child feels safe and confident. “Some of the nurseries I spoke to in Dubai, I was told that it was ‘normal’ that children would be upset, crying and suffering from separation anxiety. That did not resonate with me at all,” she adda.
At the beginning, Cecilia felt like she was a difficult parent yy Mummy Cecilia Lawrence who was too picky. She did not like that children started school so early on, that schools were big institutions with strict policies when it came to parents, that recess time was limited, and many more factors. Later, as she spoke with more parents, she came to realise that some of them shared similar opinions. Homeschooling until she found the right school, Cecilia founded a Facebook group named “The Holistic Education Initiative”, where parents were able to communicate over the topic. Joining the
group shortly after was Daniya Jackson, another unhappy parent. “It is how learning happens that we may not be happy about. Children are often over-stimulated in a large classsized environment, pushed to excel academically beyond their capabilities by both the parents and system as psychological and other research findings confirm,” explains Daniya. To her, this is where afterschool parenting became of utmost importance. “What we, as a family, accepted, was that no school was perfect. Furthermore that, there may not be one perfect school for both of our children, ages five and seven. However, as dissatisfied as we were with some schools, we were not ready to take children out.” For Daniya, whatever happens in school needs to be discussed at home. Events and behaviours processed, decisions made and conclusions drawn. She concludes: “Hence, the ideal school for us would be the school that eliminates, to a great extent, that need to ‘unschool’ the children. “The school that is kind to our children, teaching them to think and how to always learn, and fosters a life-long zest for leaning, rather than remembering information for the test, would be our school of choice.” Will some of these concerned Dubai parents ever get their wish in full? Mother, Baby & Child looks at some ways in which this may have come true through running and upcoming educational establishments which are aiming for something different, to say the least.

Finnish Education Center (FEC)
Reijo Koivula, CEO, Antti Lehto, Marketing Director & Co-Founders, FEC yyYou are claiming to be doing something fundamentally unique; how is your approach to education different and why? There are many, many details. The main themes are the same as in any school: child-cantered, supporting divergent thinking, creativity, innovation and so on. However, it eventually all comes down to staff and how things are done. Finnish teachers are the backbone of the education system and teaching as a profession is highly valued in Finland. All teachers have master’s degrees and it is very difficult to get accepted into a programme in order to become a teacher. Described in one word, our approach to education is: human. We are not going to implement any country’s education system anywhere as is, but the foundation is in the Finnish education system and values. yyYou use programs including Skillzup, which focus on a digitised approach to assessment. How important is Digital as part of your curriculum? We think digital environments are an essential part of learning and have to be used by students as well as the teachers. Assessment is one thing, but even more important is getting used to the digital world as an environment – that is where we are headed anyway. yyWhat is your latest in education and how do you plan on implementing this in Dubai? The latest developments like 12 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

EDUCATION & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
PARENTING
Art Village Nursery Nina Farokhfal Managing Director
yyYour focus is on the expressive arts; why do you think we often neglect this aspect of children’s development and how may this affect them? Many parents are not aware of the benefits of the expressive arts when it comes to children’s development. Art can be a form of communication for children and a way for them to express themselves and get a better understanding of their world. Involvement in the expressive arts gives children the opportunity to look at and experience their world in many different ways. Teaching children how to be creative and think outside the box are way more important skills to master; we want children to gain confidence and strengthen their self-esteem rather than learn how to count to ten! yyParents may think of the nursery’s activities as extracurricular rather than educational. How is the nursery different from establishments where children can engage in role play-based education? Outside venues where children can partake in different activities can indeed be very educational. However, the nursery has an educational culture of its own. The setting is well-structured; children get into routines, learn how to share and follow instructions. You have teachers who have the educational background and experience working with children.
14 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Nursery is not just a place where children come to participate in educational activities. It is a small community for children to grow and become responsible citizens of the world. yyHow do you ensure that children’s nutrition is taken care of; tell us about a typical day’s menu?
We provide the children with a healthy and balanced vegetarian home-cooked menu. All of the ingredients we use are fresh, additive-free and made daily in the school kitchen to ensure that the children will receive a variety of different foods. artvillagenursery

Zaya Early Learning
Jasmine Swiel Early Learning Centre (ELC) Manager yyYou are only Waldorf-inspired; which aspects of the Waldorf education have you chosen to acquire and why? Waldorf is a vast educational philosophy with deep roots in spirituality and anthroposophical beliefs. While this has a crucial role to play in the Waldorf educational system, it may be very challenging to the diverse culture of religion and ethnic backgrounds that make up the UAE.
❝ ❝Being in the UAE where Waldorf is not an
established system (yet), we need to find a happy medium. Oak Meadow has the creative and childcentred approach to pre-academic and academic skills which we are looking to apply.❞
So, by removing the spiritual focus of the Waldorf philosophy, it leaves us with three fundamental aspects: 1. Rudolph Steiner’s differentiation of the three developmental stages – in our case, from birth to age six, and how this motivates the way we teach in order to reach each child with compassion for where they are at this stage of their development 2. The development of each unique child and their individual character 3. An appreciation and respect for nature These three things are the basis for all learning at Zaya Early Learning Centre. yyWhat type of curriculum will you offer in the early years, before the age of seven, and how are you going to ensure it does not clash with the focus on the humannature connection? Our curriculum (pending license approval), the US-accredited Oak Meadow, shares many traits with the Waldorf curriculum, but is structured 16 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
similarly to a mainstream curriculum in that the lessons are in shorter blocks (a weekly lesson block instead of blocks of up to six weeks). Oak Meadow has been serving families from the homeschool community as well as supporting schools across the US and now even internationally since the 70s, and the developers come from a variety of backgrounds. For this reason, being in the UAE where Waldorf is not an established system (yet), we need to find a happy medium. Oak Meadow has the creative and child-centred approach to preacademic and academic skills which we are looking to apply. There is an ongoing connection between the learning process and natural contexts throughout Oak Meadow’s curriculum so there will be an emphasis on nature in all of our classes.
yyPlay, cooking, painting and discovery – these are all elements found in every nursery; what makes yours different? Zaya Early Learning is not any different to any other preschool in what we want our students to learn; we differ in how we provide opportunities for them to learn. Nothing in the Zaya ELC classroom is there accidentally or without careful consideration to the child’s response to that particular item. yyNo electronics whatsoever! Tech-savvy parenting advocates would be disappointed. How would you convince them that this is the right way to go? There are so many choices for nurseries and preschools in the UAE, parents can choose from among many which offer techbased learning. However, at Zaya Early Learning we see the huge deficits that can be caused from a dependency on tech-based learning. While we do not want to convince anyone to bring their children to Zaya ELC, we do want to advocate and educate parents of the dangers of tech-based learning at a young age. There is a wealth of research and evidence to show the long-term damage of over-exposure to tech gadgets. Generally, parents who are attracted to somewhere like Zaya Early Learning are either already familiar with Waldorf or already looking for something different. I truly believe the program will speak for itself! Zaya-Early-Learning

INTERVIEW WITH THE PRINCIPAL
CHRIS BROMHAM UPTOWN SCHOOL, DUBAI A TAALEEM SCHOOL
yyWhat are your principles and values when it comes to running the school? At Uptown School, the staff and I spend an enormous amount of time embedding the core International Baccalaureate (IB) and Taaleem values into our students and would consider ourselves a values-based school. These values include being inquirers where our students develop their natural curiosity as well as being principled so that they act honestly.
yyWhat inspires you when it comes to managing and improving the school environment and encouraging students? Again, The mission statement of the IB states the aim to change the world through education. What inspires me
is seeing our students grow through the opportunities they experience in school. We must never waste a single opportunity to support our students on their learning journey and we all work tirelessly to improve the learning experience that we deliver every day.
yyWhat do you think is the best way to deal with a student discipline incident and the communication process with their parents? Our student behaviour system is centered on the IB Learner Profile, which lays out the attributes that we wish to instill in our students. When students make poor choices, our main priority
is to help them reflect on the impact of such choices. This is invariably more productive when the conversation occurs between the student, school and parents. A positive parent partnership is central to a student’s success. My advice to staff is always to listen to parents and empathise with how they are feeling. Simple misunderstandings can often be a source of conflict if not dealt with swiftly and empathetically; if parents understand that you always have the best interest of their child at heart, in all dealings, problems can be quickly solved.
yyWhat aspect of your school are you most proud of? I am so proud of how everyone in our community embodies the Learner Profile. This results in a highly internationallyminded atmosphere where all cultures are respected and celebrated. 18 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
EDUCATION & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
yyWhat would your ideal school environment be like and how would you encourage that kind of culture? Well, I come back to the value proposition mentioned above. In a perfect school, every student would discover their passion and excel academically and personally. We encourage this by instilling a belief in staff that their efforts really do make a difference and that how they go about their day will make the difference. Happy, engaged students make eager and motivated learners.
yyWhat are your thoughts on technology-based learning vs. more time outdoors? There is no panacea that provides an answer to all of the challenges in education. Technology, when used in an appropriate, targeted and precise manner can significantly enhance learning experiences. When used poorly, it can also provide a distraction from the real business of learning. I believe that spending time outdoors is vital to a healthy and balanced childhood. Involvement in team sports can be particularly enriching. I would not see it as a choice between outdoor play and learning through technology. A balance is easily struck.
yyDo you think we would eventually adopt a no-homework policy in UAE schools? This is a fascinating question! Educational research is yet to prove a direct link between the amount of homework given and academic success. The work of academics such as Alfie Kohn in the US would suggest that, especially in primary school, homework causes so many difficulties at home that it is ultimately counterproductive. The challenge for schools is to ensure
that homework is purposeful and effective and for parents to find a stressfree, productive way to facilitate this at home. We believe that family time, sharing the day’s experiences over a meal and reading together are the most valuable home activities. Interestingly, we have just as many parental comments about too much homework as we do about too little. I do not think that we will ever move to a point where homework does not occur across the UAE, but I do see the debate raging on!
yyHow do you see the recent school fee hikes and how has your school adopted them? School fee increases are never popular
with parents. It is important to remember that the quality of a school never exceeds the quality of its teachers. As the demand for the very best teachers outstrips supply. we must provide packages that will attract the “best of the best”. As more new schools open in Dubai, market forces will impact fees and force new entrants to try and attract students away from the more established schools. However, I would sound a note of caution. Effective education is based on stability and stability is based on longterm financial planning. The best schools will avoid the temptation of slashing fees to boost short-term enrolments at the cost of long-term stability. Parents should be cautious of “special offers” which are often unsustainable on the long term! MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2016 | 19

our children later, the entrepreneur’s venture became synonymous with children’s fashion, an authority on junior apparel in the Parisian market. Here, Mother, Baby & Child interviews Nathalie on making your children’s childhood as fashionable and colourful as possible – from a mother of five, entrepreneur and fashionista. yyMelijoe has come to life from your own experience as a mother. How would you advise mothers to use their own experiences and inspiration for business? I think passion matters above all. I can only speak for myself, but I have never launched a business just for the sake of it. I love fashion, and children’s fashion has a little something extra, emotionally; it is “cuter” and I find it very touching! I love the products, trends and fabrics. Having five children myself, I also strongly believe in and know what I am talking about… yyWhat was the biggest disappointment you encountered in the world of children’s fashion which has led you to launch your own brand? When I had my first child in 2003, I found that when I went shopping for my son, I was disappointed in most of the stores’ selection of clothing which was offered. There were no destination sites for children’s shopping at the time and we launched with just a handful of brands I loved. Right away, I began to realise how rich the children’s fashion world was, with strong brands, great style and adultfashion inspirations. Before I knew it, Melijoe became

the online go-to for kids’ fashion. Today, we feature over 100 of the best brands in children’s fashion, in nine languages! yyRaising five children in parallel with a business has got to be a challenging experience. How do you manage? Every mum wants to know…
I guess the biggest thing is finding a balance: I would not have been a good mum had I not felt fulfilled. My husband lives in London during the week; we are all together as a family on weekends, but I always save an evening or sometimes a weekend, for just for the two of us. The other factor is knowing how to be efficient. At work, I can do a million things at once without second thought and when I get home in the evening, I am 100% focused on my children -- no TV, smartphone or any other distractions, just quality family time. yy Your children have got to be the most fashionable, in and out of school, tell us about their
PARENTING fashion experience. I have five children who have five very different personalities and so many different styles which they love! I like to blend brands that I love such as ChloĂŠ, Marc Jacobs and Gucci, but also Petit Bateau, Scotch & Soda, Kenzo and Little Eleven. I test every brand and they love experimenting with their individual styles. yyBack-to-school fashion can get very dull. How can we make sure children do not get bored of their uniforms and look polished at all times? We do not have uniforms in France, but I am certain that accessories (if allowed) can change an entire outfit!

WHERE DOES Baby SLEEP? LONG-TERM CO-SLEEPING AND FAMILY PROBLEMS
Where should an infant sleep? This is a common question as children at a very young age are vulnerable to many dangers, so parents often prefer to keep a very close eye on them. However, recent studies have shown that co-sleeping, a well-known practice, may not always be the most effective solution.
34 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
FAMILY & PARENTHOOD Co-sleeping, room-sharing, and bed-sharing Many people use these three terms interchangeably, but there are some differences: Co-sleeping is when a parent and child sleep within a “sensory” distance of each other, meaning that each can tell that the other is near by their touch, sight or even smell (co-sleeping is sometimes also called sleep-sharing.) Room and bed-sharing are types of co-sleeping: room-sharing is when parents have a crib in the room with them, a bassinet or portable crib near the bed, a separate crib attached to the bed or a similar arrangement. Bed-sharing is when parents share their bed with their children (sometimes called the “family bed”), which has raised more concerns among paediatricians and other experts. How is co-sleeping problematic? There is no evidence that co-sleeping past six months is a problem in itself. However, findings by the Pennsylvania State University, USA published on The Child and Family Blog suggest that sharing a room or bed long-term with a baby can be a sign of family dysfunction. Problematic co-parenting and poor spousal relationships may encourage mothers to share a bed or a room with their babies long-term. It has been found that 75 per cent of couples engaged in co-sleeping during the first few months of life. By six months, however, most had switched their baby to a separate room. The remainder tended to cosleep for the rest of the year-long study. “Those who persisted with co-

sleeping beyond six months tended to have more family problems. Marital adjustment – how well the parents got along – was worse. The quality of co-parenting – how effectively the parents made decisions about the baby together – was poorer,” says Douglas M. Teti, professor of human development, psychology, and paediatrics at Pennsylvania State University on the research findings published by The Child and Family Blog. “The level of family chaos – how well parents stayed focused on babyrelated tasks – was higher, and the quality of care when putting their baby to bed was lower. Long-term co-sleeping parents tended to be less responsive to their babies and make more hostile comments to their infants. Overall, they were less sensitive to their babies,” he explains. First, poor co-parenting and spousal relationships seem to lead to persistent co-sleeping and increased depressive symptoms in mothers. Second, mothers with depressive symptoms keep their babies awake more. It may be that, in some cases, problems in the couples’ relationships lead to heightened stress and, hence, to mums spending more time with their babies at night.
Why do families opt for cosleeping? Some studies support the belief that it: • Encourages breastfeeding by making night-time breastfeeding more convenient • Makes it easier for a nursing mother to get her sleep cycle in sync with her baby’s • Helps babies fall asleep more easily, especially during their first few months and when they wake up in the middle of the night • Helps babies get more night-time sleep (because they wake up more often with shorter feeding time, which can add up to a greater amount of sleep throughout the night) • Helps parents regain closeness with their infant after being separated from their babies during the workday So, where should Baby sleep? Findings have not identified regular co-sleeping as problematic in itself. Parents who co-sleep often operate healthily and function well as couples and parents, but studies indicate that the family system’s health can play a big part in determining how parents structure infants’ sleep in the long term. Sleeping arrangements are not just a function of culture. Teti advises: “Our findings should not be interpreted as finding fault with or attacking co-sleeping. I have three children, and I co-slept with all of them. We should advise parents that, if they wish to co-sleep with their infants, they should retain a sound balance and pay plenty of attention to the quality of their marital relationship. Every parent would be wise to care as much for their relationship with their spouse as they do for their relationship with their baby.” MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | SEPTEMBER 2016 | 35

Starting school is a very exciting time for children, but can also make them feel nervous, anxious and scared. hildren being aware of themselves is really important when they start school. Does your child know how old they are? Could they tell a teacher if they have hurt themselves? Help your child memorise parts of their body; it will boost their confidence when they are asked questions they know they can answer. Do not worry if your child has not been in a childcare or preschool setting;
playing with other children is all good practice for establishing friendships with classmates at school. Children who do not know each other will often make friends very easily, but if your child struggles, teach them some useful phrases such as “can I join in?” or “would you like to share?” As the start of school season approaches, try to get your child used to getting up, going to bed and having meals and snacks as they would on school days.
Together
• Chat with your child about starting school. What do they think it will be like? What are they most looking forward to? Is there anything they are unsure of or worried about? • Look at the school prospectus and website together and talk about the photos. • Find photos of you and other family members at school, and chat about happy memories from your own school days. • Visit the school with your child before they start. • Practice the school morning routine, including getting
Self-care • It will make life easier for your child if your child can master these self-care skills before they start school: • Support them to be confident about getting to the toilet on time and wiping properly, using toilet paper or moist wipes. • Do you have a different phrase for going to the toilet at home? Letting the class teacher know what it is will ensure they understand.

Bath time and stories instead of TV and tablet games can all help children wind down before bedtime. Making time in the evening to chat about your day for ten minutes can be a lovely routine for sharing fun times and any concerns. Nutritious meals and plenty of sleep will help them concentrate, learn and thrive at school. If your child takes naps, it would be helpful to try to gradually reduce these.

Steam
Cleaning Cleaning and disinfecting can be very tedious. If you are not a fan of chores, steam cleaning could be the answer to your worries. Mother, Baby & Child interviews Sreekumar Panicker, head of sales at cleaning supplies company Kärcher, for tips to help you steam clean the right way:
All-Purpose/Multi-Surface Steam cleaners are all-purpose cleaners, and can be used on a variety of surfaces to remove dirt, grime, and to disinfect. Some steam cleaning machines are capable of vacuuming, cleaning and drying the surface worked on simultaneously. The multi-functionality and versatility of steam saves effort and time in cleaning as it is easy to transition to various living spaces in the house and switch between surfaces; there is no need to use different cleaning solutions or detergents. Steam cleaners can be used on everything from floors and carpets
44 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
to upholstery, sinks, wall tiles, windows, mirrors, exhaust hoods and hobs! No Detergents Steam cleaners function by heating water into water vapour (steam), which occurs at 100°C. The temperature is the key cleaning component in steam cleaning as the surface tension of steam molecules is similar to a solution containing water and a cleaning agent or detergent. Because of this property, steam machines do not require detergents to clean deeply and disinfect surfaces.
Non-Allergenic Worried about potential allergens and harmful chemicals that can affect your kids? Steam cleaners, as they operate using only steam, do not introduce any foreign particles, chemical irritants or residues from harmful detergents which can irritate eyes, skin and airways, back into the environment. As a result of the detergent-free nature of steam cleaners, the machines can be used on any surface in kids’ rooms, and on their toys and other accessories confidently. Kills 99.9% Germs The temperature and the size of
TIPS
steam particles defines the usability and effectiveness of the steam cleaner. Most steam cleaners come with a control valve that will allow the user to control both the volume and direction of steam. Steam jets can be made more efficient by using appropriate accessories such as brush heads that can be used to scrub stubborn dirt and grime from surfaces. The low surface tension, hot temperature, and the size of the molecules combine to provide an effective system against germs destroying 99.9% of them while preventing cross-contamination from other surfaces.
Caution...HOT! There are two important guidelines which should be followed when using steam cleaners: a) Usually, steam cleaners can be used on all surfaces, but to ensure the surface can withstand the high temperatures conduct this test: apply the steam to a small chosen area on the surface for approximately 0.5-2 minutes, wipe the surface and check for any colour change, deformation, swelling, loosening or peeling. If this occurs, the steam cleaner cannot be used on the surface. Additionally, surfaces which have
never been cleaned with steam before should go through an initial deep cleaning to remove any old cleaning agent residue first. b) Ensure you or your loved ones do not come in direct contact with the steam jet as this can cause burns, nor should the steam be pointed at electrical equipment or used near or on electrical sockets, a failure to adhere to this can result in short circuits. When using the steam cleaner, it is important to remember not to exert physical pressure on the cleaning tools as the steam pressure can function without exertion. Your Children's room Children’s rooms require a large amount of storage and are often shared among siblings, which makes it difficult to ensure they are practical yet pleasing to the eye.
Mother, Baby & Child interviews Home Centre’s Head of Visual Merchandising Michelle Dinsmore for tips on making your home just a little bit sweeter.
Add optical illusions to make small spaces looks bigger To make a narrow spaces appear wider, make use of mirrors to reflect more space. Large mirrors create an illusion of space, both horizontally and vertically.
Room colour Use only light hues/shades and natural colours. Do not use dark colours as they may look heavy in a small area/space.
Storage Select furniture which offers storage solutions. For example, a daybed with a pull-out bed is a good solution for additional space to share the room, but does not require more space. A sliding door wardrobe provides easy access, despite a lack of space, proving to be an effective
52 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
method of storage.
Utilising the space Avoid clutter by assessing the orientation of the room when working on the furniture layout. Remember that it is not necessary to cover all of the available space with furniture.
Colours and themes Use colours that work for all of the siblings’ ages, genders and styles when working on a shared room. Style the room with accessories that work for all siblings while considering function and style, these include accent pieces and wall ornaments which are neutral for different ages and genders. Using unique painting and vinyl techniques on walls is an easy way to create a themed room. Themes can be completed by using bedding, lights, rugs and toys in a similar theme to bring the room to life. Since these techniques are temporary, you can easily update the room as your child’s style changes as well!

A Back-to-SchoolFriendly…Home?
54 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
HOME SWEET HOME When back-to-school season hits again, the transition into a stricter schedule and more obligations can cause confusion over getting your home ready, so what do the design experts think?
A long and lazy summer can take a toll on everything, including a pretty house. The kids are home for longer periods of time and are looking to make the most of their free time, the family may be spending plenty of time away and the general mood is relaxed and laid back.
Hazem Aljesr Founder and Owner, Cities Boutique To set the mood for the end of summer and the coming school schedule, one suggestion is to organise or update your child’s bedroom and clothing. Many children are ready to express a new style or show off their new interests to celebrate the upcoming school year. Adding new posters or art to the walls, or a new comforter on the bed, will give the feeling of a fresh start and inspire your child to look forward to what lies ahead. Store all the summer toys and clothes, and re-organise the wardrobe and drawers to put school clothes front and centre. Making sure that children can easily find everything they need to get ready for school will make mornings less stressful, especially if there is no confusion over what to wear. To ensure that they start the day off right and leave for school with all the essentials, Hazem also recommends creating a pick-up and drop-off spot right near the front door. If your space is limited, a small table and a wall hook or two can be used to create an area where children can deposit book bags, jackets and any necessary papers
that need attention. Those items can easily be picked back up again in the morning as your children head out the door for school. If you have more room near the entrance of your house, add a bench where they can sit to put on and take off shoes, or even a storage bin for school-related odds and ends. Another essential tip is to make sure that your children have a proper designated space to do their homework. If there is limited space in your child’s bedroom, place a child-sized table or desk against any unused wall space to set up a study area. Add adequate lighting and drawers or bins for school supplies, and your child will have a muchneeded spot to focus on schoolwork. Erika Pace Interior Decorator & Consultant, ReDecor A dedicated homework area is a must. Create a well-lit, study-friendly room/area (preferably with lots of natural light) with a comfy seat and nice big desk. Provide any essentials your child could possibly need for homework including stationary, books, etc. I like adding a chalkboard wall in children’s rooms; they love it and it is a great part of the room for writing them notes. Make sure there is a lot of shelving where you can put away all of the clutter, organised in boxes or files. Hide children’s gear in designated cupboards to avoid cluttering rooms and hallways. With a few small changes, you can make sure that your home is properly organised to encourage an easy back-to-school transition that will have you and your children looking forward to the coming school year! A change in pre-existing moles will also take place. yyOne of the most common skin problems due to chronic sun exposure is malignant melanoma. How can we know that the moles are dangerously mutating and what are the early signs of malignant melanoma that the patient should be aware of? The camps offering swimming are limited, but something we will keep in mind for next year. yyThere is a common misconception that charity is something we do if we find some free time. easy task. Charity does not have to be having disposable income to give away; it can be helping someone in a practical way which you can do on a day-to-day basis. For example, hundreds of families in the UAE have no income to put their little one in a nursery, so the child’s ability to engage with their peers is limited. You can do something as simple as offering to childmind or have playdates with your children. This costs nothing but can make a big impact. We all need a step up from time to time and, without our extended families close by, living overseas can create many challenges. You do not need to look far to offer your support to someone.
I currently work as a safeguarding and community officer for a children’s mental health centre and it is clear how being confined to the home with no peer engagement for long hours over the summer (often alone and unsupervised) can significantly impact children’s well-being and their ability to return to school motivated.

Doctor’s Profile
Dr Sajid Burud
Managing Director and Specialist, Internal Medicine, Medstar Day Surgery Centre yyWhat was the highlight of your career? Starting up Medstar Day Surgery Centre, a one-of-its-kind in Dubai. This has enabled me to establish a department in the centre where I could give a more focused, integrated healthcare service to my patients. Not only has this given me an opportunity to treat my patients’ problems, but it has also enabled them to live a healthy lifestyle. Incorporating anti-ageing medicine into my practice has also benefited patients. yyWhat is your favourite part of the job? Being an internal medicine specialist, treating both acute and chronic conditions, I develop a long-term relationship with my patients who share a lot more than just their medical problems with me. If I am able to help them improve their health, it makes me feel blessed. This, in return, has also made me learn from their experiences.
66 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
yyTell us about an emotional on-the-job situation? I have encountered many incidents during my practice, also in critical care. in the early days of my practice – I remember a young medical student coming in who had attempted suicide. He was brought in a state of coma, where we had almost lost hope of his survival. There were multiple sleepless nights where I stood beside his bed to monitor and treat him myself until he had regained
consciousness. It was rewarding to see him come walking into my room along with his thankful parents after two months of critical care stay. yyHow would you describe a typical work day? A typical work day is a busy day. I start with my early morning consultations and follow-ups. I do like to give ample time for each consultation to discuss problems with patients and see to it that they are satisfied when they leave. I like to prepare a treatment plan before my patients’ next visit.

Health Top Tips from the Paediatrician!

CHILD
School season’s biggest scares are always based on health concerns. Our doctors may be on speed dial, but there is only so much they can do if we do not know the basics, and many of us mummies really have no idea.
Mother, Baby & Child interviews leading paediatrician Dr Medhat Abu-Shaaban, American Board consultant in paediatrics and allergies and founder of Dubai-based myPediaclinic for some tips to keep your children healthy at school or the nursery.
No school for today…
•
If the child is sick, he should be cleared by a paediatrician to
go back to school so that other children are not affected.
The number of days the child • should stay home depends on the infection’s location, severity and type; this is why they should be cleared by a paediatrician.
Some bacterial infections are no • longer infectious after 48 hours of antibiotics, including bacterial pharyngitis. However, this depends on the infection.
If the child has a fever, they should • stay home and not go back
to school until the it has been resolved for 24 hours without fever reducers.
If the child has an eye infection, • they should not go to school until after 24 hours of the eye infection having been resolved.
A healthy school day yy Dr Medhat Abu-Shaaban
Children should:
Practice good hygiene through • careful hand washing and covering up mouth and nose with tissues when sneezing.
Consume a well-balanced diet • which is nutritious and sufficient for their age.
Sleep for an adequate amount of • time daily to avoid fatigue and lowered immunity.
through physical activity • asStaythisactive helps with better oxygen delivery to the brain and improves immunity.

irth is an extremely traumatic process for both the mother and the baby. With a baby’s neck being so weak that it cannot even hold up the weight of its own head, it is extremely common for the little spinal bones of a baby to get out of position during the birth process. Doctors of chiropractic are the only doctors trained to find and correct these spinal

misalignments so that the baby’s spine and nerves have a chance to function correctly and develop properly as they grow. Although correcting these problems at a young age will help immediate problems, it can also prevent worse problems from developing later. So the question is not: “can chiropractors treat children?” The question is: “have you had your child’s spine checked by a doctor of chiropractic yet?”

Can Bones Break During Labour? Vertebralplasty and Pregnancy Osteoporosis
Pregnancy-related complications are of concern to every mother-to-be. Specifically with first-time mothers, pregnancy comes with its own risks. While naturally equipped with all what it needs for birth, a woman’s body often weakens with pregnancy and labour, and bone health is among the factors which need to be considered before giving birth.

steoporosis literally means “porous bones”. It occurs when the struts which make up the mesh-like structure within bones become thin, causing bones to become fragile and break easily following a minor bump or fall. A rare condition, osteoporosis associated with pregnancy is when bones break (fracture) easily, usually in the spine, or occasionally the hip, around the time a woman is giving birth causing pain and disability. These broken bones heal normally; women usually recover and return to their previous quality of life. However, and because such fractures may be frightening to the woman and her family, women are now seeking advanced, minimallyinvasive procedures – including vertebralplasty and stentoplasty – to help them recover. “We use procedures such as vertebralplasty and stentoplasty, which do not take too much time and can be performed under local anaesthesia and minimal sedation. These have a 90 per cent success rate,” says Dr Sebouh Z Kassis, specialist neurosurgeon specialised in spine surgery at Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery. “Kyphoplasty used to be the established procedure to treat these fractures. The procedure requires the patient to be placed under general anaesthesia.” he adds. This procedure can cause problems such as acute recompression of the restored height, which is why new techniques such as vertebralplasty and stentoplasty are now widely preferred. “Vertebroplasty is similar to kyphoplasty, wherein it uses cement to stabilise the vertebral fracture. This procedure is performed under local
anaesthesia and while the patient is lying face down to give the surgeon easy access to the spine.” Stentoplasty, or vertebral body stenting, is another advancement of kyphoplasty gaining popularity for its effectiveness. Here, balloon-mounted stents are placed within the vertebral body to create space, followed by the introduction of cement into the area using fluoroscopy. “The main advantage of the procedure is that, the height gain after balloon inflation can be maintained in comparison to kyphoplasty where recompression is a possibility. These techniques can be used to correct other spinal fractures and in the treatment of spine cancer as well,” explains Dr Kassis. The new procedures are now bringing hope to thousands of patients in the UAE and neighbouring countries, suffering from debilitating pain and a
compromised quality of life. They are also important in preventing further fractures and are becoming an important consideration in caring for advanced osteoporotic-related bone damage, whether associated with pregnancy or otherwise. It is important, however, to remember that there are also factors which will keep you safe and protected: Pregnant women absorb calcium from food and supplements better than women who are not pregnant. This is especially true during the last half of pregnancy, when the baby is growing quickly and has the greatest need for calcium. During pregnancy, women produce more estrogen, a hormone which protects bones. Any bone mass lost during pregnancy is typically restored within several months after the baby’s delivery (or several months after breastfeeding is stopped). • Frequent showers keep the body cool.
yyIn this region, what are some of the most common ailments expectant mothers suffer from due to the excessive heat? Expectant mothers usually complain of heat rashes in their thighs and areas which are prone to more friction due to an increase in body weight. Heat rashes are caused by an increase in basal temperature during pregnancy and also due to friction in large-surface areas. 74 | SEPTEMBER 2016 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

yyHow should expectant mothers manage discomfort (nausea, dizziness, the inability to eat even when hungry in fear of throwing up, etc.)? Discomfort can be avoided by taking frequent, smaller meals. Dinner must be consumed earlier, long before going to bed. Physical exercise will help strengthen the muscles and prepare the body for the post-partum period. As per the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, in the case of normal pregnancies, it is recommended to do 20 to 30 minutes of exercise daily. Well-maintained physical fitness helps reduce the risk of high blood pressure, decreases the likelihood of going for a caesarean delivery and facilitates breastfeeding for healthy mothers.
