Oh, the things we do for our children! From giving up hobbies and bidding farewell to me-time to stopping or reducing leisure activities and changing our social circles, there are too many scenarios us mamas are very familiar with when it comes to sacrificing for their education.

A leading international bank has revealed that parents in the UAE are among the world’s top three spenders on their children’s education; they spend an average of USD 99,378 in total on a child’s education from primary school up to undergraduate level in university, as indicated by a survey of 15 countries.

Despite the costs, education remains a vital priority for UAE parents with many willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that they can afford it. Facts and figures aside, I hope that mothers know the value of extra-curricular education and leisure as well.

Getting your child to spend more time outdoors is priceless, and this is the right time to do it.

So, whether they spend their November splashing about, bouncing in play areas or shopping the market with mama, make sure your kids have as much fun as possible. You can’t put a price on that…

EXPECTATIONS VS. REALITY: BECOMING A NEW MOTHER Rosa Bullock

Five months ago, I met my daughter Ayda Grace. When I was pregnant, I was bubbling with excitement about parenthood. Ayda would be my little sidekick and we would conquer the world together, making time for diaper changes and feeding sessions of course!

Motherhood is enormously rewarding, but surprisingly more challenging than I had anticipated. It's an emotional whirlwind that sends you on the ride of your life. Here's a list of the expectations I had before Ayda Grace was born and the amusing reality of life after becoming a mother:

A cape in one hand and pacifier in another, I thought I would be zooming around being the mommy equivalent of Wonder Woman.

I would breeze through emails and gather dropped jaws off the ground as my family and friends cheered me along. Never a hair straying out of place, the coffee in my cup permanently hot, and all my emails read and replied to – I was determined to own the ‘working mommy’ title to the bone. But then, my baby decided she's got plans of her own...

I'm leaving my desk to console her before even getting the chance to log onto my computer. I thought I would never let motherhood affect my professional life – then I experienced the joys of drafting client proposals with a wailing baby in the background. Not fun.

Every decibel tugs at my heart strings and, before I know it, I'm cradling her in my arms with my emails wailing in the background.

Despite the challenges of being a working mum, her smile makes it all worth it.

When I decided to get back into the game and zoom off to meetings, I experienced severe separation anxiety, especially in the first week.

However, distance makes the heart grow fonder, so returning home to my little one after a taxing day out was the best feeling ever!

Preparing for motherhood like it's an exam I was determined to ace. Reading all the lwiterature on the subject and being able to recall academic sources in my sleep. I hoped to breeze through my little one's first year – ticking all the necessary boxes along the way.

Worrying yourself sick because your baby is heavier or lighter than other babies their age. Trying to relax about it, but then worrying yourself sick about neglecting your child's health.

Several books and online resources state very strict feeding times, but realistically, I found that it can be quite a challenge if you're trying to stick to an hour on the clock. The internet is brimming with countless articles, blog posts and instructional videos about how and when to feed your child. The bottle versus breastfeeding debate is all over the place, and then there's calls from family and friends who have more advice than they know what to do with.

Browsing Google with a fine comb and waiting for my mommy instincts to kick in, I'm always playing with numbers in my head. As if being a new parent wasn't exhausting enough, there's all the anxiety that comes along with wondering whether your child is healthy enough. But then, your child surprises you by learning something new, whether it's a different giggle or rolling over. The twinkle in their eyes when they look at you makes you feel like the best mother in the world.

The reality every mum knows: Parenthood, especially in the first few years, is like learning how to ride a bike. It's something that conquers all your senses and reduces you to your most vulnerable state. There's constant inspiration to be the best version of yourself for your little girl.

Becoming a mother has boosted my professional life, in a way, too. It's driven me to go above and beyond for my child.

Adjusting to a professional working mum's lifestyle takes time, but when you hit that sweet spot, you gradually watch it become second nature. You may not always be sure you can handle it, you may even fall and scrape your knee, but there's always an incentive to get up and keep trying, especially when you're dealing with an adorable baby and not a rusty old bike!

Just when you thought you had nailed parenting, something suddenly becomes a new challenge, a project for you and your little one, and potty training is a very important step in their development and independence.

A world of no more nappy changes? Well yes, eventually, but bear in mind it’s another milestone for your little one. As with all new skills, it takes a time, patience and some methodology to crack it.

Here are my top 10 tips for potty training: plenty: Make sure your child is having 6 – 8 1bowelDrink drinks of water-based fluids a day to help keep their and bladder healthy. It goes without saying, but

avoid fizzy, caffeinated and sugary drinks. Don't limit their drinks to help them stay dry as it doesn't work. The bladder needs to be filled and emptied properly to function well.

Usually the time to start is when they’re around two years old, and if you can, choose a time in your family life which doesn’t have any other major changes or disruptions. Be consistent and kind: it’s often difficult, and you may feel like you’re not progressing, but every child eventually gets there.

The Galleria on Al Maryah Island is gearing up to welcome friends and family ahead of the 2017 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a different kind of track. Children are invited to come and meet the young Emirati professional race car drivers Amna and Hamda Al Qubaisi for some inspiring tips, and to test their driving skills at the specially-formulated children’s driving track at the mall.

From November 16 – 18, children ages four to 11 will be offered complimentary driving classes before suiting up for a ‘driving test’ on the children’s pedal car driving track. Mind the brain. Teaching your kids about the brain

2 and how it works will help them take control of

situations. Make sure they know how strong the brain is and what it can do, helping them understand and grow through stimulating their brain power.

Raise a young entrepreneur. Unstructured play

3 is beneficial as it helps your child explore. However, there are certain activities which need to be planned and carefully thought-out for children to learn how to ‘get started’ and take initiative. Think of your child as a little entrepreneur: where would you want them to start?

Keep it optimistic. There’s nothing worse than a

do attitude. Speak to your children about positivity and discuss any challenges they’re facing, helping turn them into learning experiences.

Teach them to be resourceful. This is one skill

Learning to make a castle out of milk cartons is way more useful than store-bought toys with no educational value whatsoever. A resourceful child will later know how to put together a presentation in 15 minutes, just in time for that urgent meeting.

Embrace the imperfections. Kids can be the biggest

6 perfectionists! Even the slightest inconvenience can turn

into hours of wailing and regrets. Not only is this a terrible approach to life, but it can also make them rely on you to make things right. Make sure you clarify that imperfections are human, laughing at your own and allowing for them at home.

Communication is essential. Your kids must learn to

7 have a proper conversation rather than getting their way

by objecting and raising their voice. A can-do kid solves their own situations and keeps communication open with their peers and others.

Help them develop a sense of responsibility. Can-do

8 kids know that getting what you want in life is about what you put in. Make sure they understand their responsibilities by encouraging them to undertake age-appropriate chores and develop their own study routines.

Ensure they become ‘good helpers’. Research has

9 shown that kids, by nature, like to help others. All you

should do is encourage this behaviour, which translates into a can-do attitude and desire to know more, be more and do more.

Exploration is key. Not only does this open them up

When it comes to reading, schools do their part and parents reinforce it at home. The same holds true for children’s physical literacy. You can start by speaking to your child’s teacher, principal or the PE department.

The most important thing to remember is that you can’t do wrong. Just move with your family every day and, if that’s all you can do at the beginning then you’re still well on your way.

There’s nothing better, in my opinion, than being able to ‘play’ all day long with children, during which they unfold their natural curiosity, in addition to a sense of wonder and enthusiasm for play and learning. Through play, children help me see things from a whole new perspective which is so uplifting and inspiring.

How important are parent-teacher relationships at The Cardinal Valley Nursery?

Over the years of my teaching career, I’ve spoken with many parents and educators about what a ‘good parentteacher relationship’ should be. The answers from those conversations were varied and underpinned by a wide range of beliefs and values.

I think that, these days, some parents can come across as overcommitted and anxious, and many have unrealistic expectations. This is certainly not a healthy start to a relationship. We at The Cardinal Valley Nursery understand the need for a consistent, effective and open communication that’s achieved through collaboration, understanding of our common goals and, most importantly, trust.

We respect and value our parents as the prime caregivers and learn through them about their children’s needs, likes and dislikes. Finally, parent-teacher relationships don’t just happen, they develop and flourish over time.

As a centre director, how would you describe a successful early years’ education?

I see a successful early years’ education through the happiness, success and accomplishments of every child.

A successful programme is one that ensures that the child is the centre of focus, and enables them to discover, explore and learn at their own terms without constantly being instructed and directed to perform actions.

Finally, the goal of a successful early years’ education now is to lay a solid foundation for the child in their key development years, equipping them with the skills and potential to compete and succeed in an ever-changing world.

Tell us more about the D-ThinkEd® approach, the world curriculum, and how they’re different.

D-ThinkEd® is an approach based on the design-thinking methodology first developed at Stanford University,

California. At The Cardinal Valley, we use design thinking through play to develop children’s creative confidence and foster an active problem-solving mindset.

Our world curriculum is a unique blend of the British EYFS, IB and American Common Core, with an intrinsic focus on the cross-contextual integration of the curriculum. With the constant evolution of education, children must now learn the connections between curricular subjects and themes, instead of just ‘learning’ about individual subject matters in classrooms.

Through design thinking, we impart the right skills to our children, so they can approach an exercise, activity or project as problem-solvers and leaders. These skills help unlock their creative curiosity and facilitate a quick and agile mindset with the ability to understand complex concepts and critically think about them.

How is your learning through play approach different?

Play is one of the most powerful tools that children employ to learn, explore and develop. Our job is to foster an environment where they can leverage this power of play. We give them uninterrupted blocks of time to play and reach deeper levels of learning and understanding.

As children might approach a play-based exercise

where they’re learning about the concept of gravity, for instance, we leverage the use of tools, materials, resources and the environment to let them explore, develop hypotheses, discover and record results for themselves. When they experience what gravity means for themselves through play, they have a better understanding of it than if we were to read it out to them from a book.

We at The Cardinal Valley let children create their own paths by leveraging the power of play.

How do you know if your teaching strategies are effective?

We place great emphasis on observations and assessments. We assess children throughout the year to identify their strengths and areas of interest. We’re particularly keen on recording the beginning and end of term assessments as these help us discuss with parents the unique gifts of their children, and how much they have progressed over the past few months.

We also follow an assessment model that assesses children along multiple intelligence domains, as we then share with parents the varied range of domains that their child is competent in.

How can I help my child form their identity from the early years?

Every child is unique. Even identical twins, with identical features, will have different personalities and qualities. When we discuss children’s uniqueness we rarely focus on their self-identity and what it means for them and those who are around them.

The Oxford English Dictionary describes self-identity as: “The recognition of one's potential and qualities as an individual, especially in relation to social context.”

So how can we help children develop their self-identity in this age of social media where they’re bombarded with countless images of how they should look, feel and behave?

Here are a few tips: Start with being confident in your own identity. Make a list of your traits and, maybe ask your family, friends and colleagues what they value about you. Being aware of your own identity will help you support your child in discovering their own.

Next, ask others about your child’s strengths, and speak to your child about their thoughts. It’s important that you listen to your child’s voice and opinions – ask open-ended questions and pose moral dilemmas, for example: What are your friends’ special qualities?

If your friend took your apple, what would you do and why?

Allow your child to explore their own thoughts and feelings without judgement or criticism. If they ask you a question, or seek your views, consider answering with: “That’s an interesting question, what do you think about that?” This will allow your child to think critically before you add your own opinions.

Having an awareness of their self-identity from the early years will help your child grow and develop with confidence in the years to come.

STARTING NURSERY? IT’S AS EASY AS

Motherhood is nothing short of a rollercoaster of emotions: just when you thought you had it all figured out, life throws new challenges at you. One of the biggest is having to accept the fact that your baby will be with strangers for quite a chunk of their day; when it’s time for nursery, there’s just so much that can go wrong, but – and you can trust us on this one – it usually goes right!

Sending kids to nursery can be difficult for both parents and children,” says Dr Sarah Rasmi, parenting expert and psychologist for Play:Date, an app that helps build a child’s social circle. “There’s something symbolic about sending kids to nursery. In a way, it signals that they’re growing up. As parents, we love watching our kids grow, but it’s also a reminder that they’re not our ‘little babies’ anymore.”

Given that this is a monumental shift for children, going to nursery may entail separation anxiety and a challenging adjustment period within the classroom environment.

“For children, there’s a disruption in routine,” explains Dr Sarah. “Kids are used to being in their own environment with their parent or caregiver. Suddenly, they’re now separated from that person and pitched into a new environment. Many kids also go from having one-on-one attention to having lots of other kids in their classroom who also want and need attention.”

How can mum make the transition easier?

Drop by the nursery “Visit the nursery,” advises Dr Sarah. “This will give children the opportunity to meet with their new teacher, explore their environment and connect with classmates. Best of all, they’ll

be doing this alongside their parents. This will make the transition a little bit easier for everyone (especially mum and dad!.)”

Make time for play Playdates will help children get accustomed to new faces.

They also implement and encourage social skills and boost confidence. Nurseries always factor in a child’s social capabilities when they join, as it helps nursery staff determine areas of development in a child, including their language and understanding capabilities.

Have your listening ears ready “Follow the nursery’s lead. They’re equipped to deal with the separation anxiety, especially at the nursery stage,” says Dr Sarah. It’s important for parents to listen and communicate with their child’s teacher as it helps build a relationship based on trust and understanding.”

Starting nursery is a big deal for little ones. They’re spending most of the day with new friends and adults which can be unsettling. However, children, with the right direction and positive reiteration can overcome upset behaviour and anxiety, which will lead to a love for nursery and, eventually, learning.

Apart from modelling this behaviour, you’ll also have to teach them through fun activities, engaging them and keeping them aware of the value of what they’re doing.

Here are some ways to teach your kids about sustainable living: Plant a tree. Whether in your own garden or backyard, or in collaboration with the Municipality, planting a tree is good for children so they can watch it grow over time; watching their success flourish will help them learn about growth, persistence and caring for Mother Nature.

Repurpose old items. Old, worn out and even broken items can always be reused. Teach your children that, instead of throwing away items they don’t use anymore, they can simply look for other ways to use them.

Donate clothes and toys. Sit together and go through toys and clothes which you no longer need and can donate. You might even find some items that are worth keeping for a bit longer.

Avoid single-use items. This includes water bottles, paper towels, triple-wrapped convenience foods and more. Think about how many of these items you have at home, and what you’re teaching your kids by using them.

Eat the right things. Local, sustainable and organic is the way to go. The good thing about these methods is that they can also inspire you to grow your own food – big garden not required. You can grow cherry tomatoes on your porch!

Visit local farmer’s markets. The way to healthy eating starts here, and it’s such a fun outing for the whole family. Bonus: The weather now is perfect for outdoor markets.

Use both words and actions. Recycling, using less water and power, even the car you drive all send powerful messages to your children. Never underestimate the importance of modelling good behaviour – and it all comes down to details.

Create teachable moments. Make sure your kids understand why you’re behaving a certain way. You may be reusing items, but remember, they don’t understand the logic behind it: it’s important to explain it to them.

Clean with sunshine. Hot, soapy water and sunshine clean toys and soft furnishings as efficiently as market cleaners. Home cleaning products usually have tons of chemicals, in addition to being harmful to the environment.

Read to your kids. You probably remember some of the bedtime stories which were read to you as a child, and your kids will too. Choose stories that encourage good practices towards the environment and read them to your kids.

Take a nature walk. Okay, so Dubai may not really have that many flora and fauna at your doorstep, but we must admit, the greenery is beyond stunning and a walk around the corner may show your kids some plant species they may have never seen before.

Make it fun. Caring for Mother Earth doesn’t have to be ‘boring’. Try to make sure this isn’t a ‘going green’ initiative, but rather a learning curve for the family – and a way to spend more time together doing things that matter.

All-natural fabrics “Fabrics can be divided into three types,” says Babak Moghaddam, operations manager at Champion Cleaners Dubai. “Firstly, you have fabrics made from natural fibres. The most commonly-used natural fibres in school uniforms and sportswear are cotton and wool. These two fibres are very well-known for their soft textures and can be worn very comfortably; they’re also natural and perceived to be better for the environment. The drawback is that they crumble easily, colours tend to fade with washing and they’re more expensive.”

Man-made fibres Then, we have fabrics made from man-made fibres; the most commonly-used man-made fibres in school uniforms and sportswear are polyester, viscose and acrylic yarns. They all share the characteristics of natural fibres being extremely predictable, stable and durable.

• Acrylic Cotton: While pure acrylic yarn is still widely used in school knitwear for its hard wear and excellent value, an acrylic cotton mix is taking over the market to offer a more comfortable, warm yet light garment.

“Parents can rest assured that all the above criteria are met when uniforms are purchased from schools or from school uniform manufacturers. For parents who wish to personally purchase uniforms from retail outlets, they should check the care label which will clearly specify the mix and its percentage. For younger students, it’s highly recommended to purchase washable uniforms which is again specified in the care label,” adds Babak.

• Polyester is very common with professional sportswear as it draws moisture away from the body and disperses it to outside air, keeping the wearer cooler and drier in hot conditions. It’s light, resilient and cheaper than cotton.

Some kids love sushi and others don’t, but health experts say: sushi may not be an ideal food for kids: What about a sushi burrito without the raw stuff instead?

INGREDIENTS

• 150g Japanese white rice • 15g asparagus • 80g prawn tempura • 15g avocado • 45g crabstick • 1 piece of Nori sheet

METHOD

• Lay the bamboo rolling mat on a flat surface.

• Place a sheet of nori on top of the mat, then spread the sushi rice thinly and evenly over the nori.

• Sprinkle sesame seeds over the sushi rice.

• Place the rest of the ingredients evenly.

• Mix the shredded crabstick and mayonnaise, then place the mixture with the prawn tempura and additional mayonnaise.

• Use both hands to keep the roll tight and bamboo mat to distribute pressure evenly.

Why Cutting Carbs is So Tough Mamas, we hear you: “Pasta tastes so much better than being skinny.” Well, we don’t know if we agree with that, but regardless of how heavenly a Hawaiian pizza sounds right about now, carbs can make you gain weight. While a known fact, nobody knows exactly why carbs have had such bad PR in the past years. That’s why Dr Nas Al-Jafari, family medicine consultant at Intercare Wellness, is here to tell us more about carbs.

Low carb or low fat?

Evidence suggests that low carb is more successful than low fat from a weight-loss perspective. This is mainly because ‘insulin resistance’, which leads to diabetes, happens in combination with weight gain. The main stimulators of insulin – and weight gain – are carbohydrates. On the other hand, natural fats are more filling and provide the benefit of lowering insulin.

It would be wrong, however, to completely demonise carbohydrates; the big issue here is the abundance of refined and processed carbohydrates which have crept into our food environment. Eating unrefined carbohydrates in their natural form is an important part of a healthy nutrition plan. Similarly, everybody’s nutritional needs are different, therefore no one size fits all, otherwise everybody would be doing it and succeeding.

Can I lose weight if I go on a low-carb diet?

The simple answer is: yes, you can, but it’s not guaranteed; weight loss is far more complex than cutting calories and carbohydrates.

Weight is not simply a calorie scale, and there are many other variables in play. Weight gain (and loss) happens under hormonal control and addressing your nutritional intake is one of many factors to take into consideration, the others being sleep, stress and exercise.

I've lost weight on a low-carb diet, but I'm getting sick of it. How can I keep the pounds off without eating low carb?

The trap people often fall into is not replacing the carbohydrates with natural fats, which are nutritious, tasty and more importantly, filling. Another aspect of your nutrition which can help is the timing of when you eat. The body is primed to feed during daylight hours and fast during darkness, which is more in tune with our diurnal rhythm (day-night clock). Eating during a smaller eating window, otherwise known as intermittent fasting, can be just as beneficial as changing the foods you eat.

I'm on a low-carb diet and I'm not losing weight. Why?

There’s a general misunderstanding when it comes to weight loss: it’s not as simple as adjusting calories in, calories out. Think of your body weight as more of a thermostat (it has a set point!), which is under hormonal control. The most common example of this being the dreaded plateau encountered by most people when trying to lose weight: the body goes into starvation mode, reducing your metabolic rate and increasing your hunger hormones to compensate for the weight loss.

Similarly, other factors in your lifestyle – like stress, sleep and exercise - can have a knock-on effect on your hormonal balance. Body weight is a hormonal problem, therefore addressing your whole lifestyle to improve hormonal balance is key.

What would be better for me to focus on: cutting carbs or sugar?

Sugar has no nutritional value, therefore cutting it is the obvious answer.

It’s also worth minimising ‘refined’ carbohydrates in any form, meaning carbohydrates which aren’t in their natural state: this includes cereals, grains and fast food. It’s the refining process which makes carbohydrates inherently less desirable when creating a weight loss nutrition plan.

Why is it so difficult to cut carbs?

One reason is because the bulk of modern nutrition has become focused around carbohydrates.

Therefore, they’re the most readily-available foods: convenient and cheap. Controlling your food environment, being prepared and buying fresh are key to successful weight loss.

Sugar and other refined carbohydrates are also physically and emotionally addictive, they trigger reward pathways in the brain like addictive drugs. Thus, the body craves them.

Switching to foods with a higher natural fat content will keep you full for longer and prevent those dreaded carb cravings.

The tricks to eating less carbs:

• Eliminate sugary drinks.

• Don’t eat too much bread.

• Stop drinking fruit juice and flavour your water instead.

• Choose low-carb snacks like lean turkey and almonds.

• Eggs are a great low-carb breakfast option.

• Replace potato and bread with veggies at restaurants.

• Choose almond or coconut milk over cow milk.

• Read food labels for carb levels.

• Eat more protein.

Small steps, big goals; take it step by step and you’ll find yourself eating less carbs overall mamas – now that’s a plan!

When you live in Dubai, valet parking, yachts, supercars, 24/7 delivery services and the world’s largest, well, everything become staples of everyday life. Our kids learn to ski on the world’s biggest indoor slope, play in the world’s biggest malls, brunch on unlimited steak and lobster and swim in pools surrounded by palm trees and super yachts – seemingly oblivious to the trials and tribulations of the big, wide world out there.

Growing up, our kids won’t know any different and, to them, the levels of luxury and safety the UAE provides will become the norm. So, how will this affect them if we move back to our home countries? Well, the task is not as difficult as it may seem. There’s plenty to do to keep your child’s feet firmly planted, but to do so we need to occasionally take them out of their comfort zone – all while staying in this beautiful country.

Get back to nature

We may not have forests of green or tropical jungles, but we do have some of the most beautiful deserts in the world and they’re the perfect places to get back to nature.

Take your kids camping, search for camels and oryxes, light a fire, roast some marshmallows and take in the wonder of the stars at night. It’s a great way to get down and dirty, connect with your children and show them what nature has to offer.

We have some of the most beautiful neighbouring countries surrounding Dubai – India, Sri Lanka, Georgia and Jordan, to name a few. Let your children experience how other cultures live.

• Not only does a baby massage stimulate your baby’s muscles, but it also helps blood circulate, which prevents dry, itchy skin and conditions which result from it. Over time, baby massages can help with hyperpigmentation and keeping your baby’s skin blemish-free. Just make sure you learn the basics of a beneficial, correct baby massage.

• Moisturisation is an important factor when it comes to baby skin, but so is using the right

products. Make sure you use chemical-free lotions, designed specifically to help protect their skin. Just like with adults, try to apply the lotion right after bath time to ensure optimum absorption.

• Dubai is quite the sunny place to be! However, direct sunlight can be very harsh on your

baby’s skin – causing severe damage. Whenever you’re out in the sun, make sure you use an SPF to protect skin texture and prevent pigmentation.

• Detergents make baby clothes smell comforting, but don’t forget that clothes are constantly

in contact with their skin. Make sure you use mild/organic detergents to avoid skin irritation.

• Be wary of harmful wipes, too. Baby wipes may be a mum’s best friend, but not all types out

there are gentle on babies’ skin. Beware of chemicals and harmful substances when choosing your baby’s wipes.

• Try to always be in contact with your baby’s skin. A mum’s touch has an important effect,

nurturing and magically soothing a baby’s skin; so, skin contact is important whether it’s at bedtime, bath time or any other time.

• During the early months, avoid using scented baby products as a fragrance means there are chemicals, which will irritate baby’s delicate skin.

• Babies need to wear loose clothing which doesn’t aggressively rub against their skin. Always buy quality clothes in soft, baby fabrics.

If I have fat removed through liposuction, will it reappear elsewhere?

First, let’s understand what fat is. From birth until adolescence, a human body produces millions of fat cells. After adolescence, these fat cells don’t multiply, but can store fat and increase in size. How fat is stored varies from one person to another. Fat deposits in some parts of the body more than others, it primarily depends on genetics.

We classify patterns of fat deposits as Android or Gynaecology.

Now, there are two kinds of fat cells – the Labile and Stubborn. Labile fat cells can be easily metabolised, whereas Stubborn fat can’t. When a person loses weight, fat cells shrink, but will remain in their location. Labile fat, typically located inside the tummy around the organs or

in the form of cheek, neck and arm fat, etc. is the first to metabolise and shrink. Stubborn fat, which is normally located under the skin in the tummy, thighs and hips, is very difficult to lose.

Liposuction is ideally performed for Stubborn Fat and the purpose is to improve the proportion of the area that grows bigger than the rest of the body parts. This is best suited for individuals who are exercising and trying to stay fit with healthy nutrition, but are not able to reduce stubborn fat. Once fat cells are removed by liposuction, new cells don’t form again, but other fat cells can continue to increase in size if a person continues to consume calories.

• Always wash baby’s clothes before they wear them. You need

to make sure that clothes are fresh and clean, but only using baby laundry detergents which are specially designed for this purpose, being fragrance and dye-free. Wash baby’s clothes separately from all other items, including family laundry.

• Always use fragrance-free diapers and make sure they fit loosely to avoid chafing.

• To avoid diaper rash, change baby’s diaper frequently and whenever wet or soiled. After you’re done, pat baby dry and avoid rubbing as it can irritate their sensitive skin. Make sure you apply a thick layer of ointment or baby powder.

• Babies need two baths a week, and they should be in warm,

not hot water. To prevent baby from getting cold, pour water onto their shoulders as they bathe. Gently wash baby’s scalp with a baby shampoo and use cotton balls to cleanse the face.

• Once they’re six months old, babies can be exposed to

the sun. However, you need to protect them with SPF 30 sunscreen – as a minimum – applied at least 30 minutes before going out. They also need a hat to shield the sun.

• If baby’s skin becomes red after sun exposure, make sure you quickly use a soothing cream. Cool compresses can also help soothe irritation.

Why does my child toe walk?

There can be four reasons for children to toe walk:

Depends on the age, as it’s a brief part of developmental milestones before walking. While the child is cruising along the furniture, you’ll often see babies toe walk or even just stand on their toes; this helps build muscle strength in the hips and lower limbs for independent walking.

The child can be tactile sensitive, especially on the soles of the feet and will tiptoe on specific textured surfaces. The less surface area for the foot that touches the floor, the less discomfort the child experiences.

The child could be seeking some pressure feedback into the calve muscles of the leg. This will happen at random times, but more often, and will be while the child is standing and/or walking.

It could be idiopathic toe-walking, which means that the reason is unknown and it might or might not go away.

Why does my child like applied pressure i.e. tight hugs, weighted objects, etc.?

This could be a sensory processing issue where the child’s proprioceptive system, which is located in the muscles and joints, isn’t processing incoming information correctly and they don’t feel their bodies the way we do.

This child has difficulty regulating resistance activities such as the opening and closing of objects. This is the same child who will most probably stomp their feet while walking, bump into furniture, press hard on a pencil, write roughly on a page, grips items hard, enjoy rough tumble play and might lose friends due to this problem.

If the child enjoys the tight hugs and handling slightly-weighted objects, then allow it in moderation and under supervision with activities recommended by a therapist with experience in sensory integration/ processing.

Why is my child only able to manage soft foods?

Depending on the age of the child, if they’re older than 12 – 18 months, then it would seem to be an oral defensiveness difficulty where they are very sensitive with food textures: this could lead to problematic or picky eating.

The therapist would also question other areas that are linked to tactile processing, as the mouth is an extension of the skin that covers the rest of the body. This child would need to be exposed to structured texture exploring along with deep pressure activities to help regulate the tactile experience with the aim of helping them accept varied food textures within their diet.

How can I improve my child’s pencil grip?

We would need to look at how the child is physically holding the pencil, observing the wrist, arm shoulder and core postural position while writing/colouring. Underlying factors needs to be addressed; this is often decreased shoulder stability.

When a child presents with an incorrect pencil grip, it’s a compensatory strategy, and while underlying issues are addressed via gross motor and fine motor physical activities, one could also trial specific pencil grips to aid in correcting the hand position while holding the pencil.

Observing how your child interacts with their world is key to spotting any deficiencies and problems early on. The earlier you address disabilities, the better you’ll be able to handle them and higher the likelihood of treating them for good.

Newborns enter this world with an unexperienced immune system. With time, they battle various infections and get their immunity primed. For example, it’s perfectly normal for a child to develop six to eight episodes of upper respiratory infections in a year.

In fact, it’s important for a child to acquire mild infections to develop lifelong immunity against some diseases.

However, if a child is overly susceptible to infections, their immune system may need to be boosted.

A simple, yet important way to boost a child’s immunity is to give them the necessary vaccinations. Hygiene, particularly handwashing, plays an important role in reducing stress on a child’s immune system.

Hence, children should be taught the importance of handwashing at home and in school.

How can I boost my child’s immune system?

1. Breastfeeding Exclusively breastfeeding until six months of age and continuing to feed for a year or two at least is crucial to protect the baby against diseases and give them the nutrition they need. Breast milk contains various antibodies and white blood cells which protect the baby from ear infections, diarrhoea, pneumonia, meningitis, urinary tract infections, etc.

2. Healthy Dietary Habits Good nutrition is essential for an intact immune system.

• A balanced diet containing all five food groups should be offered to the child: dairy products, fruits and vegetables, cereals, protein (meat, poultry, fish, eggs or pulses) and fat (oil, ghee, butter, etc.)

• Unprocessed natural food should be encouraged; junk food with additives should be discouraged

• Excess sugar (juices, fizzy drinks, chocolates) should be restricted as excess sugar levels in blood tend to reduce white blood cell activity

• Good fats rich in essential fatty acids and hydrogenated oils should be included in the diet (vegetable oils/fish oils/nuts); deep-fried food must be avoided

3. Vitamins and Minerals Essential nutrients that stimulate a strong immune system include vitamins A, C, E and D, and minerals such as iron, zinc, copper, etc. These nutrients can be obtained from a wholesome diet. In the case of picky eaters, a course of vitamin supplements can be given after discussing it with the doctor. Since the dietary sources of vitamin D are very limited, children should be encouraged to play outdoors to make sure that a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure happens daily.

4. Regular Physical Activity Like in adults, regular activity in the form of playing a sport, cycling, swimming, jumping, running, climbing etc. has been found to increase the number of natural killer cells in children, thereby enhancing their immunity. As a mum, exercising with your children is a better option than just urging them to go outside and play.

5. Healthy Sleep Cycle Sleep deprivation makes a child susceptible to illnesses by reducing natural killer cells. A child’s body regenerates and renews itself while sleeping.

A school-going child should get a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep daily to be active and healthy.

In addition to these factors, exposure to chemicals, toxins, radiation and spending a lot of time indoors breathing stale recirculated air can suppress a child’s immunity. Taking care of the child’s environment will help boost their immunity.

The most important role of a parent is to reduce a child’s stress levels by loving them unconditionally, holding, hugging and kissing them often, giving them lots of down time, time for creative play or rest, in addition to encouraging them to laugh more and develop a positive attitude towards life. Reducing the levels of stress hormones in a child’s body helps boost their immunity.

Remember, mamas: Not all fevers are bad and, contrary to popular belief, you don’t need antibiotics for all of them. These small innocuous infections can, in fact, help build a child’s immunity for a better tomorrow.

EARLY SCREENING TO PREVENT CHILD HEARING LOSS

Whether it’s the relentless pound of construction equipment, constant din of traffic or even a cacophony inside a classroom, kids today are more at risk of severe hearing loss than ever before. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that 1.2 million children in the Middle East and North Africa region could be suffering from some sort of hearing loss.

Dr Bernard Hoffmann, head of the Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Department at the Abu Dhabi-based Healthpoint hospital, sheds light on the types, causes and importance of early screening and prevention of hearing loss in children: Types of hearing loss: There are two common types of hearing loss: conductive is caused by water behind the eardrum or its perforation, or middle ear malformation.

Sensorineural hearing loss is caused by inner ear or hearing nerve dysfunction or malfunction.

“There’s about an equal number of cases for both types of hearing loss presented at Healthpoint,” says Dr Bernard.

“There’s also another condition called mixed hearing loss, a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, with damage affecting both the outer or middle ear as well as the inner ear.”

It's all connected: Hearing loss in children, even if minor, can lead to significant development problems.

The sooner the check-up and intervention, the better the outcome for the normal development of hearing and speech, as well as intellectual capacities. If diagnosed with hearing loss before speech develops, the child could enjoy better speech and language results than those who are diagnosed at a later stage.

Patient case: “I once treated a two-year-old Emirati boy who was diagnosed with conductive hearing loss due to water trapped behind his eardrum. This affected the boy’s hearing, and slowed down his speech development.

Screening helped identify his problem, which was then corrected via surgery, resulting in him being able to hear and develop speech normally,” explains Dr Bernard.

Common causes: While some degree of hearing loss may

be a normal part of aging for those who are 50 years old and above, hearing loss can also affect younger patients with either a congenital or hereditary condition that manifests itself later in life.

Hearing loss can also be caused by common environmental causes such as normal activities including swimming, occupational noise by exposure to noise beyond a normal level and more.

“A more recent culprit is the use of music players and smartphones, which many users enjoy with the volume far too high. It’s important to ensure your children aren’t exposed to loud sounds, as the symptoms of hearing loss may not emerge until one or two decades later,” adds Dr Bernard.

Prevention and early screening: While some forms of hearing loss are completely avoidable by wearing protective gear, or simply turning down the volume where possible, early screening at the very first sign of trouble is essential.

Many cases of hearing loss can be reversed if treated quickly: 60% of hearing loss during childhood is due to causes that are preventable. From the earliest age, hearing loss can affect all aspects of our life, but a simple screening – especially if your child is in any pain or discomfort – can make all the difference.
