SIX REASONS YOUR CHILD BENEFITS FROM SUMMER CAMP These two-month long summer programmes can help your child in many ways - not only do they keep them amused and entertained, but they also teach them a variety of social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills that help their development.

summer camp is a great way to introduce them to what is to come. Camps can give them a taste of what they can expect at nursery because it familiarises them with concepts such as structure, schedules, classroom rules, communication with others, sociability, sharing, having meals and independence.

Six reasons to enroll your child in a nursery camp this summer:

4

1

Summer camp helps to teach a child about independence. Because the child is away from his/her parents for the day, summer camp helps to adapt and prepare them to be separated from mum and dad for a short period of time. It is often difficult for kids to be away from their parents as required by pre-school; which is why joining a summer camp for a few hours each day is a great way to accustom them to independence, slowly but surely.

2

It teaches invaluable social skills. Taking a break from mum and dad, and being around other kids is a great opportunity for children to learn to interact with others. Summer camp is all about sharing, taking turns and having fun with others in a variety of different activities. This helps to build confidence, which in turn helps your child to be a sociable, friendly and empathetic individual in the future.

3

Summer camp provides an opportunity to prepare your child for nursery. If you’re planning on registering your child for their first day of pre-school in September,

It keeps your child physically active. Instead of spending the summer watching television or playing on an iPad, summer camp provides an opportunity for your child to be involved in all kinds of physical activity. It is often effortless because this physical activity is disguised as fun and entertaining activities that offer your child new skillsets. More than that, physical activity leads to stronger hearts, lungs and bones, healthy body weight, enhanced energy levels and superior emotional well-being.

5

Summer camp provides continuing education. If your little one has spent the full year at nursery learning and growing, the discontinuity in the summer can interrupt this process. Camp is a great place to apply all of the cognitive and emotional learning achieved at nursery throughout the year.

6

It is also great for parents! In general, summer camps have a lower number of students enrolled, which means that it is easier for you, as a parent, to forge meaningful relationships with the other parents of the nursery. In that way, by having your child enrolled in summer camp, not only will you have more time for yourself and your personal business, but you will also get more time to socialise.

TEETHING All babies go through teething and most parents struggle to alleviate the symptoms. This is a list of the four interesting facts about teething:

1 2

3 4

The first teeth erupt at proximately 6 months of age and continue over the next three years. In most cases teething causes minor discomfort and may be obvious by drooling, crankiness and irritable disposition. Normal signs of teething also include red cheeks, red swollen gums and a need for the baby to chew things. Fever, stuffiness, diarrhea and a runny nose should not be blamed on teething. A child with these conditions and symptoms may require medical attention.

Parents can help ease teething pain by massaging their baby's gums with clean fingers, offering solid (not liquid-filled) teething rings, or a clean frozen or wet washcloth. If you offer a teething biscuit, make sure to watch your baby while he or she is eating it, as chunks can break off easily and can lead to choking. If the child is refusing to be fed offer him cold food for some time.

Do not use teething tablets Stay away from teething tablets that contain the plant poison belladonna. Belladonna is commonly known as ‘deadly nightshade.’ It is a plant whose leaves and berries are extremely toxic. Belladonna has been used as both a poison and a medicine throughout history.

TEETHING COOKIE RECIPE

TEETHING SYMPTOMS:

Ingredients:

• Refusal to eat • Teething rash • Biting • Night waking • Crying • Drooling • Irritability

• 4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup of apple sauce • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tbsp agave nectar

TEETHING REMEDIES: The things that can help soothe your baby's teething pain include massaging sore gums, offering something cold (like a teething ring that has been kept in the fridge, or acetaminophen (on an occasional rough night).

Mix all the ingredients together, either by hand or using a mixer. Shape the cookies in rectangular form and bake them for 20 minutes at 320F in the oven. You will need to lower the temperature and reduce the cooking time by a few minutes if you are using a fan oven, so do a ‘tester’ cookie or two until you get the right recipe for your oven. Wait for the cookies to cool down and become hard before giving them to your baby.

SIX WAYS TO PREVENT

TODDLER TANTRUMS IN PUBLIC

Dubai-based writer and mum to two toddlers, Hina Zohaib Khan, tells us how she has worked out the best ways to prevent a toddler tantrum in public. (And let’s face it – this advice is gold!)

In

our busy lives rushing from one place or activity to another, it is easy to forget how bad it can feel from a toddler’s viewpoint when good things come to an end. As adults, we know how to regulate our emotions, but for toddlers it is quite challenging to handle their objections, frustration and to resist their own impulsive behavior. These feelings are natural for toddlers and they are simply not at a stage of 26 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

knowing how to cope. At the same time, keeping up with toddlers can be a very tough task, meaning that the dreaded ‘toddler tantrum’ has the potential to become a catastrophe in public places. There is absolutely no guarantee that your small kids will behave well in public settings such as a wedding, at someone else’s home, in the mall or the park. But as parents, we often try to bribe them to be nice. Warning them about their

behaviour is a common tactic, but haven’t you noticed that this often makes them upset, as they feel you have ‘turned against them.’ And sometimes after a few warnings, children will tune you out and don’t even take the warning seriously. Giving countdowns doesn’t always work either, as my kids end up having even worse tantrums. I have often come across mums discussing ways to persuade their

children to calm down and deal with their tantrums. Let’s take a typical scenario and I shall guide you through the ways to keep toddlers calm and avoid a stressful flashpoint for them. How many times has your toddler thrown a fit while leaving park? Of course, numerous times. As a mum of two toddlers, here are some of the steps I take when it comes to leaving the park and avoiding a tantrum:

MAKE THE TRANSITION SMOOTH Moving on from an activity or a place can feel simpler for them if you introduce a distraction. You could give a snack as a transition, or listen to your child’s favorite song. This will give you a chance to indulge him in another activity and you could exit the park without chaos.

GET DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL

Race: Children love to laugh and have fun. Race them back to the car or stroller. You can either race with them or make it an opportunity for siblings to race. Their competitive nature works almost every time.

It is best to

acknowledge your child’s

feelings

Sing: Children love making up new songs, how about you try to describe what you are doing, and what is happening next. The words in your little song could go something like this: ‘We’ve had lots of fun in the sun…and now my dream is to get ice-cream’ (You might need to have some frozen mango, or home-made frozen yogurt pops ready in the freezer at home!)

GIVE THEM MOTIVATION Give kids a reason to move on. You could try to have something more ‘exciting’ in the car. This could be a snack or one of their favorite toys. Give them a motivating reason to go home, such as reading a story, ‘being a little chef’ and helping you to prepare a meal. I usually hand my three year-old his favorite fruit and promise to give it to him at home after washing it.

MAKE PREDICTABLE ROUTINES Tell them in advance about what the plan is, for instance that you have to leave the park in 1 hour because daddy will be

home, or we’re going to watch a show on TV together so we must leave. Sunset could be another indicator of when it’s time to leave. Setting a timer could help your child to have discipline. You could try setting the alarm on your phone 15 minutes in advance, and then again five minutes before it is time to leave. Tell them when each alarm goes off and what it means – and remind them of the next thing you are going to, and why you’re going there. When the second alarm goes off, tell them to do the last thing they want to do in the park and remind them again that you’re going to get in the car and go to the next thing.

EVER TRIED SCOOPING? Having let them know before the trip that you’ll only be there for a set amount of time – and then given them both 15 minutes notice, and then the last five-minute notice before they say goodbye to the place, when the time is up, you can simply scoop them up in a fun way. Congratulate them as you are doing this on something like playing really nicely, running fast, jumping higher than they did before, swinging high up on the swings, etc. For example, if your child is playing in the sand, scoop him up and wave bye to the sand, the kids and the surroundings. Tell them to say ‘see you soon, I have to go and get my ice cream now / go home now / help mummy to cook now / etc.’ I have tried it quite a few times with my elder one and, well… it kind of works!

GIVE THEM CONTROL “It’s almost time to go, so choose one more thing to do” works like a charm. Your tot will at least feel like they are in control of something. Ask your child what is one last thing they want to do before leaving? And make sure to allow for the time it takes. It is best to acknowledge your child’s feelings. Not that they won’t then be upset, but it will provide them a source of comfort and confidence that they are understood. I hope my pointers help you learn how to convince your toddlers, because they have definitely helped to make my life calmer! MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2018 | 27

THE LINKS BETWEEN CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND EXERCISE In our interview with Dr. Nashila Farrah Jaffer, Doctor of Chiropractic, Director of ‘We Rock the Spectrum’ Kid’s Gym, she discusses the crucial developmental reasons to build regular movement and exercise into children’s lives, and how We Rock the Spectrum can help fulfil these needs.

Why did you decide to set up We Rock the Spectrum (WRTS) in Dubai? In the past, children led more active lifestyles because gadgets were not readily available like they are today, so kicking a football around or playing in the garden were the norm. Nowadays, children go to school from such an early age and have regular routines when they should actually be actively learning and playing through movement. Movement is essential in the development of children's neurological system. In fact, 90% of stimulation to the brain comes from movement of the spine. I feel this lack of movement has significantly affected the growth and development of children today. Being a mother myself, I have seen how important it is for my children to do something active every single day, and in Dubai it is not the easiest with the hot summer months. Thankfully the parks are fabulous and they are a fantastic way to keep children moving and active and encourage a healthy lifestyle in the winter months. So, when I came across We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym whilst searching online, I thought this would be perfect in Dubai as an indoor playground for children to fulfil their sensory and motor development needs whilst having fun. I call it ‘Play with a Purpose.’ What kind of services and classes do you offer? We have Open Play whereby you can come with your child at any time of day, just like a regular gym, so you don't need to in advance, just 28 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

show up. We encourage parents to play with their child inside the gym, but we also have a ‘Drop n' Shop’ option where we can supervise your child for an hour or two. We have kids’ fitness classes, dance and drama classes, a maths enrichment programme, birthday parties, coffee shop and free WiFi too. We also work very closely with Pure Child Health, a centre that offers occupational therapy and speech and language therapy, and we run parent workshops at the gym to help educate parents about child development. Why is it so important that parents take their children to a gym? It is important for children to get into good habits early on and understand that movement is an essential part of an active, healthy lifestyle. Just as adults go to the gym and exercise to keep themselves fit, the same should be available for children so that it becomes a habit. If we can encourage the importance of exercise from a young age we will avoid many more health problems later in life. What age should parents think about taking their kids to the gym? We Rock the Spectrum Kid's Gym welcomes children as young as 1 year old. There are fun swings to help with spatial awareness and movement as well as soft play toys, role play and arts and crafts to encourage fine motor skills, as 30 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

well as social skills interacting with other children. From birth to age 5, a child's brain develops more rapidly than at any other time in life. Scientific research has made it clear that the quality of a child's experiences in the first few years of life helps shape how their brain develops. Therefore, I would encourage movement and activity as early as possible. Tell us about some of the specific benefits of the equipment. There are ten pieces of equipment that will be found in every We Rock Kid's Gym, each one with a specific purpose. For example: • The climbing apparatus enhances body awareness, body scheme, motor planning and bilateral coordination. The child's body weight, combined with gravity, provides additional proprioceptive feedback to the joints, helping the child coordinate their movement. • The bolster swing provides a swinging side to side motion that is a great motor planning and motor sequencing activity. • The trampoline builds lower body strength and helps to teach balance and provides a full body workout. • The zip line, by far the most popular piece of equipment in the gym, is a great way to build upper extremity strength,

muscle endurance, enhance the ability to integrate and tolerate movement and help give self-confidence as children challenge themselves to hold on long enough to get to the crash pit at the other end! How do your services and classes cater to children on the Autism spectrum specifically? The equipment found at all We Rock The Spectrum Kid's Gyms are the same pieces of equipment used in occupational therapy offices to help regulate children on the spectrum who experience sensory processing difficulties. In fact, statistics show that as many as 1 in 6 children experience sensory symptoms that could affect their everyday lives. We encourage parents with children on the spectrum to come and play with their child in an inclusive environment with children of all abilities. This encourages parentchild bonding, social interaction and a place where children of ALL abilities are welcomed. In addition, there are long waiting lists for some occupational therapy clinics and it can also be unaffordable for some families. She adds: “Our staff are fully trained on the specialised equipment and we even have a Calming Room for children who may need a break from the excitement of the gym!”

TIPS FOR DEVELOPING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL When parents send their child to school, they often do so with memories of their own school days and experiences. But things have changed since then Dubai schools are among the most progressive in the world and getting closer to your child’s school can really help to enhance their education. Here are some quick tips to help achieve this…

MEET YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER When the school year starts, arrange to meet your child's teacher and discuss how you can work together for developing your child’s education and maximising their school experience. Ask how well your child is doing compared to other students. If your child is not keeping up, especially when it comes to reading, ask what you or the school can do to help. It's important to act early before your child gets too far behind.

ATTEND PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS AND SCHOOL EVENTS Schools usually have one or two parent-teacher meetings each year, but you can also ask to meet with your child's teacher any time during the year. You’ll also find other school shows/ events that the children have worked hard towards, which are superb for parents to attend to give them a better idea of what your child has been doing at school. Parents are often surprised at how much their child has developed and thrived when they see these shows!

GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL Learn what the school offers. Read the information the

32 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

school sends home, and ask to receive information in your native language if necessary. Talk to other parents to find out what programmes the school offers. Maybe there's a music programme, afterschool activity, sports team, or tutoring program your child would enjoy. Remember to keep track of events throughout the school year.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD GETS THEIR HOMEWORK DONE Let your child know that education is important and that homework needs to be done each day. (I remember being told as a child that the kids who did best at school are the ones who would be most likely to get paid more than the kids who didn’t do well in their exams. Whether is true or not is beside the point – it was certainly leverage I could understand!) You can help your child with homework by setting aside a special place to study, establishing a regular time for homework and removing distractions such as the TV and phone during homework time.

VOLUNTEER AT YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL Teachers appreciate it when parents help out at the school! There are many ways you can contribute, such as volunteering in the school library, or make food for a school event. At most schools, groups of parents meet regularly to talk about the school (this is usually called the Parent Teacher Association.) The meetings give you a good chance to talk with other parents and teachers and to work together to ultimately improve the school experience for your child.

HELPING YOUR CHILD COPE WITH SCHOOL TRANSITIONS Changing schools is often a traumatic experience for children. The idea of change from familiar surroundings, leaving their friends and feeling like a ‘new kid’ where they don’t know anyone can make them feel very isolated.

M

oving home, or even moving to a new country is a fully life-consuming process and it can be hard to stop and really appreciate how these changes can affect your child. Moving to a new school is part of the upheaval that will bring its own challenges to a child. To help your child to transition from one school to the next, check out the following tips, which we hope will inspire some approaches you can use.

Help your child keep in contact with their old friends If the family is moving, take pictures of friends and familiar places and offer ways to keep in contact with close friends via phone, email, and letters. Help your child talk about what he or she will miss and about what will be new and different.

Talk about the new school and find out more together Encourage your child to discuss the future transition by asking questions such

34 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

Help your child get to know the new environment beforehand. When possible visit the school together. Even viewing it from a car or seeing a photograph of the building is better than leaving the first day to the child’s imagination.

Include your child in the decisions If you have a choice of schools, listen to your child’s ideas about what is important to them. After visiting various schools, openly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each. Although the final decision is yours, it is important that your child feel included in the decision-making process.

Let your child know it is natural to feel apprehensive Your child may be stressed about not having any friends in the new school and worried about whether they will be accepted by other kids. It is intimidating for a child knowing that everyone already has their friendship groups, whereas they don’t belong in any of them as a new kid. They know that they will not know their way around, and may fear that the academic demands may be higher. Make sure you tell your lots of stories about your own childhood experiences of when you were new at school. Go into lots of detail and let them know that it is normal for everyone to feel apprehensive, but the feeling only lasts for a very short time by telling them: ‘You’re only new at the start, after that, you won’t be new anymore.’ Remind them that every single child in the school was new at one stage and felt the same, and it didn’t take long for them to make friends in class. Tell them your stories of the good things that happened, such as how you met your best friend or

about whether they will be accepted by other kids.

as, ‘What have you been thinking about your new school?’ Make a list of your child’s concerns and together try to find answers to the questions. Many schools have websites that describe procedures, show virtual tours, and answer common questions. Ask the school if they have a buddy system, or if there are any other children starting at the school at the same time as your child. If so, ask for the school’s help in connecting your child to them.

which teacher was your favourite and why. Also remind your child that when they get to school, they will be doing exactly the same things as everyone else, so will quickly make friends.

Empower your child Empower your child by discussing actions he or she can take if a problem arises. Ask, ‘What concerns you most about the new school?Listen and then ask: ‘If that happens, what will you do?’ Help your child think of constructive ways to

deal with any difficult situations that may arise. It helps to take the fear out of the situation if your child is confident they know how to handle such situations.

Let your child know that you totally believe in them Let your child know that you absolutely expect the transition to be successful, but they have to just wait it out with a short time of feeling overwhelmed at the start – which is entirely normal. Your attitude can go a long way in helping your child.

Provide extra support after school starts Understand that your child may need extra time, attention and support. When such a fundamental change happens for your child, whereby he/ she cannot enjoy some predictability, your child may regress to an earlier developmental stage. Do plan time for family fun because when such overwhelming transitions occur, you and the family are a crucial anchor for familiarity, predictability, routine, love and support.

Encourage your child to express his or her thoughts and emotions Even when a concern seems minor to you, be respectful and know that it could seem like a major crisis to your child. Try to put yourself in his or her place and understand how a child might feel when overwhelmed and without the right perspectives or coping skills. Ask open ended questions like, ‘How’s it going?’ or make comments like, ‘You seem sad.’ Then listen to your child – in fact, it is more useful to listen carefully than interrupt and start giving advice!

Know when to seek help If after a period of time your child is reluctant to go to school or seems truly unhappy, seek help and talk to the school. Express your concerns and meet with your child’s teacher and/ or school principal for advice. Together, perhaps with your also child being present, work out a plan of action. EXPERT OPINION

DR . PA U L L IEB L ICH Director of Schools Scholars International Group

WHAT DOES PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION MEAN FOR OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE? Education expert Dr. Paul Lieblich, Director of Schools at Scholars International Group, says that education requires disruption to become “forward-facing.” Here, we look at what this means and how Clarion School Dubai helps to build the professional skills that will equip our children for the future.

POWERED BY:

Education expert, Dr. Paul Lieblich, says that education requires an overhaul in order to answer the transitioning needs of global industry and society as a whole. Assigned to Clarion School Dubai following his recent appointment as Director of Schools at Scholars International Group, his first aim is to reshape the process of learning to ensure that it addresses the demands of a rapidly-evolving modern world.

recruitment firm, Hanson Search. In a valuable insight for parents, the Middle East office of Hanson says it is now witnessing new criteria being specified from employers, who are asking the recruitment firm to put forward job applicants that possess ‘soft skills.’ Soft skills are a combination of people skills, social skills, communication skills, character traits, attitudes, career attributes, social intelligence and emotional intelligence that enable people to navigate their environment, work well with others, perform well in themselves, take responsibility and achieve their goals. These soft skills complement traditional ‘hard skills’ and competencies. The competitive working environment of the future that your children will have to compete in will need these attributes, rather than just sector-specific qualifications. Addressing the need for change in education, Dr. Paul Lieblich, Director of Schools, says: “Our industries are changing due to automation and other seismic shifts. In order to remain competitive in the workforce, people need to be able to adapt and innovate in their roles. Education needs to be reimagined to meet the changing needs in society. By addressing the process of learning and instilling the joy of learning within children, we can create a desire in them to be continual learners. At Clarion we are

The process of learning is a key feature of Clarion School Dubai - the first progressive school in the MENA region. Clarion School Dubai, is built off a framework developed in collaboration with the renowned Bank Street College of Education in New York City. While learning is aligned to accredited American standards, there is a realignment of education to be ‘learnercentered,’ with a heavy emphasis on the process of learning. This involves a high level of expert facilitation where all teachers are required to have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Education. Dr. Paul Lieblich says: “There needs to be a structural shift in our understanding that education is no longer a rite of passage that ends after college, but something that continues beyond the academic setting. Hence, we must focus on developing a child’s toolkit to learn, to want to learn and to enjoy the process of learning. This is the real value proposition to our children at Clarion - once we acknowledge that K-12 education is only one part of the required learning for an individual, we can then better understand what the purpose of a K-12 education should be.” By giving children greater ownership of the learning process, localising the 38 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

This approach to learning develops important traits like a growth mind-set, resilience, collaboration, communication, creativity, innovation and critical thinking.

KINGS’ SCHOOL DUBAI CELEBRATES

AN ‘OUTSTANDING’ DECADE OF SUCCESS The latest KHDA rankings have awarded leading British curriculumbased Kings’ school their rating of ‘Outstanding’ for the 10th year running. This is an insight into how the school has consistently maintained this ranking for a decade.

Kings’ School Dubai, the founding school in the Dubai-headquartered Kings’ Education portfolio of British curriculum campuses, is celebrating another education milestone with an ‘Outstanding’ Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) inspection ranking for the 10th consecutive year. Established in 2004, and the Foundation Stage and Primary school of choice for over 940 students representing 60 nationalities, Kings’ School Dubai was one of the first schools in the emirate to be awarded the highest possible KHDA ranking when the inspections system was launched for the 2008/9 academic year. Alan Williamson, Director of Education for the Kings’ group of schools, said: “I’m delighted with the outcome of the recently announced inspection by KHDA, which is testament to the hard work of our dedicated and experienced school leadership team, inspired and passionate staff, incredible students and their supportive parents. “To retain ‘Outstanding’ 10 years in a row is by no means easy, especially given the increasing rigour of the DSIB Framework. Kings’ School Dubai successfully strives to deliver ‘the best by every child’ each and every day and is a wonderful environment that prepares students for their transition to our fantastic secondary school, Kings’ 40 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

School Al Barsha, which has grown considerably in its reputation for delivering excellent academic outcomes within the context of a similarly values driven system of strong pastoral care.” “There is no doubt that the KHDA inspections, which are carried out by the Dubai Schools Inspections Bureau, have helped to raise the quality of education in Dubai. The framework is challenging and rigorous, and preparation of inspection documentation and evidence is extensive. This involves evaluating your performance as a school against each of the six standards in the framework and also whether your planned improvements and resulting actions have been able to positively move the school forward,” said Bede Higgins, Principal, Kings’ School Dubai. In 2017, Kings’ School Dubai participated in the KHDA Abundance Group Project, with the team lending its expertise to support another local, nonKings’, school. “This was an opportunity for middle and senior leaders from both schools to come together and exchange ideas, visit one another’s campuses and share best practice; and the relationship is ongoing,” said Higgins. The school’s leadership team is not resting on a decade of ‘Outstanding’ laurels, with the focus for 2018 on further developing Arabic language capabilities and performance for both native and nonnative speakers. “As educators, we are never satisfied. We are constantly evaluating all aspects of our school and our performance. We identify gaps and look at ways to develop and improve what we offer,” explained Higgins. “It’s a very challenging framework with regards to Arabic language expectations, particularly in a city where Arabic isn’t necessarily the primary language of communication, due to Dubai’s multicultural population,” he added.

TEACHING AND LEARNING ARABIC

The team has already ploughed considerable time and resources into reviewing the delivery and pedagogy of Arabic and how its Arabic language team members deliver lessons in a way that matches the rest of the curriculum, and

which children are familiar with. “What we’re really focusing on now is transferring some of the key teaching practices and pedagogy used in English or literacy learning to our Arabic classes,” said Higgins. “This includes such things as ‘talk for writing’ where children verbally generate ideas in order to produce a piece of written work, or a ‘shared write’ where the class collectively contribute to build and write a story together. Our children are used to doing this in English, so when we transfer some of these skills across to Arabic, we should see well structured, higher quality pieces of writing. Equally by applying early reading techniques including phonics to our Arabic lessons, reading will also improve,” he said. Mohamed Ali Mohamed, the school’s Head of Arabic has also been spearheading an Action Research Project on phonics with the KHDA, which Higgins cites as a further example of how Kings’ School Dubai is applying techniques from English to support teachers in raising standards in Arabic, both within Kings’ and i n similar schools across the city.

A HAPPY SCHOOL

According to Higgins: “Kings’ School Dubai is a ‘happy school’ for children to attend and a rewarding place to work as

an adult, which is reflected in the very low staff turnover and retention of staff over a number of years.” He said: “We firmly believe that children need to be happy in order to learn but that it’s a question of balance, ensuring that they are also challenged at an appropriate level in order to develop. To support this, we need to use all the qualitative and quantitative data available to identify what each child needs.” A highly sought-after facility, Kings’ School Dubai, nonetheless, currently has limited places available in Years 5 and 6. Higgins remarked: “What is important for us to communicate is that once your child is in a Kings’ school, then you have a place with us right through to the end of secondary education, and with secondary school places often challenging to secure, this is one definite advantage of a Kings’ education.” He is also realistic about the Dubai schools landscape, and noted: “We have an amazing reputation, but there are other schools here with equally fantastic reputations. In order to maintain our reputation, we must continue to have high expectations. I believe that ‘high expectations is the expectation’, and through our innovation agenda we are continually looking at new ways of doing things.” MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2018 | 41

KINGS’ SCHOOL NAD AL SHEBA

WELCOMES NEW PRINCIPAL With a wealth of international headship experience on three continents, and a lifelong passion for education, Kate Fuller has big plans for her new role in Dubai. Here, she shares her career inspiration and vision with you in her open letter to parents and interview with us.

A British national with over 15 years’ teaching and senior leadership experience, Kate has successfully guided children – and teaching teams - on lifechanging learning journeys, from the UK and Malaysia to the US, and now Dubai. She joins the Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba family from the British International School of Houston (flagship of the Nord Anglia Education US group) where she was Head of Primary. Kate also spent a number of years in Kuala Lumpur as Principal of the primary campus at the top-rated Alice Smith School, prior to which she held headships and strategic education consultant roles in the UK.

Kate Fuller,

Principal, Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba

Passionate about providing children with an outstanding British international education, her reputation as an excellent change manager means she is wellrespected among her industry peers and parents, and a highly sought-after thought leader and educational authority.

KATE FULLER’S OPEN LETTER TO PARENTS “Dear Parent,

It is said that teaching is the profession 42 | MAY 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

that teaches all other professions. I believe it is a true vocation. In the eyes of a child you can see endless possibilities, unlimited potential and unerring curiosity. It is our job to keep this belief alive. We are the facilitators of the children in our care, the keeper of their dreams, fans of their aspirations, their biggest cheerleaders and critical friends. We are the ones who encourage them to aim for the highest heights, while standing below them with a safety net, should they fall. Kings’ Education Founder and Chairman, Mr Tayeb Al Baker; Kings’ School Dubai Founding Head Teacher and former CEO Kevin Stedman; and Kings’ Group Director of Education, Alan Williamson; have each shared their vision for the school with me. Outstanding educational groups have many things in common. They have the same exacting standards, excellent academic outcomes and superb facilities. The difference with Kings’ is that we place the wellbeing of students and staff at the heart of what we do; the needs of learners and learning are our top priority; and we want the very best for every individual in our care. We are a place where every child and adult is cherished - and challenged.

We are the ones who encourage them to

aim for the highest heights

We all want the very best education for every child that comes through a Kings’ School. It is these beliefs and experiences that bring me to Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba, a place of learning full of unlimited potential.”

ASK THE PRINCIPAL

Kate’s experience speaks for itself, but we wanted to know more about her inspiration and ambition in our interview. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A TEACHER? I spent time volunteering in a school for students with special educational needs after having worked in London as a recruitment consultant. Working with children was such a refreshing and invigorating change, and I realised I had found my true vocation. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE? Basically, I am a ‘people person’ who also loves professional reading and data. It’s a variety of different approaches depending on the circumstances, person and context. In established teams, I take a more

democratic approach, drawing on their ideas and experiences within the dynamic that has been built and embedded. When looking at educational change, I take an instructional approach, drawing upon research and international best practice. Finally, when tracking and embedding the change, I use a transformational approach to ensure continued improvement. AS A PARENT AND TEACHER, WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS A CHILD SHOULD EXPERIENCE DURING THEIR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY? I believe that all children need to experience the joy of learning. The ability to follow their lines of inquiry, sate their curiosity and develop a love and passion for exploration into their unknown. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR MOST VALUABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCES? As a child, one of my most vivid memories was fungi hunting in the woods in year five with Mr Beasdale. We were allowed to roam in pairs and return at the sound of a whistle. I remember how liberating and exhilarating it was to be learning outdoors. As a leader, one of my greatest learning experiences was training to be a British School Overseas inspector, and being

able to see my own school through critical eyes as a result. WHAT DO YOU BRING TO KINGS' AND THE GROUP? Kings’ is a phenomenal educational group with a strong track record in excellence. Joining it will offer me new professional challenges as we plan to open the secondary phase at Kings’ School Nad Al Sheba, and raise the expectations even higher, building on the work of my predecessor, Darren Gale. My contribution will be a strong understanding of curriculum, learning and teaching, and professional development coupled with an excellent track record in raising achievement and attainment of students and staff. WHY THE MOVE TO DUBAI? For me, I view it not as a move to Dubai, instead I am moving to Kings’. Joining an exemplary school group with such a stellar track record is the main reason we are relocating. I am also excited about my own children being educated at Kings’ and we are looking forward to exploring Dubai and learning more about life in such a vibrant city. KINGS’ SCHOOL AL BARSHA

BUILDS ON SUCCESS With the latest Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) rankings raised to ‘Very Good’, a new principal and an AED 20 million expansion programme underway, Kings’ School Al Barsha is building on its four years of success.

The recently released KHDA inspection saw Foundation stage given an ‘Outstanding’ rating across the board, with Primary in an extremely strong position and Secondary, in its first year of national and international performance at GCSE level, recording outstanding KHDA results. “A real triumph is that across English, Maths and the Sciences the results were outstanding in terms of attainment, with KHDA giving a ‘Very Good’ overall,” says Alan Williamson, Director of Education for Kings’ Education.

NEW PRINCIPAL A familiar face will also take on a new role with Rebecca Gray, current primary head teacher, promoted to Principal. Says Williamson: “Rebecca is an outstanding leader with a formidable track record from the UK, and in the two years she has been with us, her energy, ideas and creativity have brought a real sense of purpose to the Primary environment, where every classroom is literally buzzing.” This frees Williamson up to focus his attention on other opportunities and projects across the group’s trio of high

profile schools, which include ongoing development of Kings’ successful model for sporting excellence and wellbeing, exploring links with universities, the possibility of positioning Kings’ as a teacher training institution, and introducing the first Confucius Hub at a premium British curriculum school in Dubai.

Over in Secondary, the focus is a little different. “Because we have our first Year 13 now coming through, and a new Year 7 with over 150 children starting in September, we do actually need more classrooms,” notes Williamson. Here, 12 new learning spaces will be added as part of the Expressive Arts building expansion, “to allow the English and Maths departments to unite under one roof.”

The current focus for Williamson and Gray is the AED20 million development of the campus’ social spaces and existing facilities, which will be completed in time for the start of the new school year. Kings’ remains committed to its original academic and business model, which is for a school of approximately 2,000 students with seven or eight-form entry across different sections and phases. “The point of this project is not simply to add classrooms to accommodate more students,” reaffirms Williamson.

CREATIVE CAMPUS The left side of the campus will be home to an expanded Primary block, with a

Several music classrooms will be introduced while the Primary block will be home to additional Arabic and Islamic Studies classrooms, a Mandarin language classroom, plus a large Primary canteen.

Rounding out the exciting new developments will be a second food technology classroom (a first for Dubai in terms of full-scale hospitality standard facilities), two state-of-the-art science labs, further playground space improvements and the addition of more green spaces. A HEALTHY DIET DURING RAMADAN The Holy month of Ramadan is seen by many as the perfect time to improve, regulate and revise their diet. If done correctly this can be an opportunity to cut out unhealthy foods and start enjoying a more balanced way of life. If done incorrectly however, it can cause more harm than good. Here, Dr. Mitesh Patel, Medical Director at Aetna International, shares his top tips on how to maintain your health throughout Ramadan.

WHAT TO EAT • A balanced diet with equal proportions of carbs, fat and protein • Foods high in fiber such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains • Slow digesting food like bread, salad, cereal or oats, and toast. These foods all provide a constant release of energy • Lots of fluids with vitamins: fruit juice and isotonic drinks, but not energy drinks

WHEN TO EAT • You should have at least two meals a day (before dawn

46 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

and after dusk) and it’s important not to skip one of them • Lots of fluids between Iftar and Suhoor is key to maintain adequate hydration • Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, should be a wholesome meal to be filling and provide energy for the day to come • Try to limit the amount of sugary foods you have and instead include other sources of carbohydrate in your diet, such as wholegrains, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and legumes • Avoid fatty foods and salt as much as possible as it stimulates thirst

REST & EXERCISE • Sleep daily for at least 6-8 hours to get sufficient mental and physical rest. Less sleep means you’ll feel tired during the day which in turns leads to less productivity and movement • Try to walk or participate in some kind of physical activity • If you are on medication, or on a health management plan of any kind, make sure you consult with your doctor

OBESITY, DIABETES AND OUR CHILDREN

The Middle East is currently dealing with a serious health crisis. The number of obese and diabetic children in the region has skyrocketed in the past 15 years, however, parents are the ones who can help to combat the situation and help their children into a healthy adulthood, according to Dr Bahee Van de Bor, Specialist Paediatrician and Dietitian, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London (GSOH).

48 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

ccording to a 2017 survey conducted by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in collaboration with the Dubai Statistics Centre, we are facing the following statistics: • More than 13,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the UAE each year

weight gain early to prevent children from becoming obese, is key.”

HOW OBESITY IMPACTS THE BODY ORGANS

• Diabetes prevalence in Dubai is 14.7% of expats and 19% of Emiratis

Obese children are at an added health risk as their problems get compounded in adulthood as they suffer acute organ deterioration.

• The total prevalence of diabetes in Dubai is 15.2% of the emirate’s population

Brain

• Undiagnosed diabetes in Dubai is in 11% of the population • The rate of pre-diabetes (people with a high risk of developing diabetes) in Emiratis is 16% and 15.5% in expats • According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 36% of children in the UAE are overweight – more than one in three.

A DOCTOR’S VIEW Dr Bahee Van de Bor, Specialist Paediatrician and Dietitian at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, (which treats children from all over the GCC including the UAE for diabetes), explained why obesity snowballs into life-threatening health issues. “Overweight children are at high risk of becoming obese adults. Overweight children and young adults are more likely to have problems with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and other conditions that are linked with excess weight, including asthma, non-alcoholic liver disease, gall stones, problems with joints and polycystic ovary syndrome.”

Due to obesity, blood vessels to the brain may narrow, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood throughout the body efficiently. As an obese child grows into an obese adult, he is likely to have higher risks of suffering cerebral strokes.

Heart Excess fat leads to fat deposits that make blood vessels become more stiff, thus obstructing blood flow. This happens over a period of time. Recent research conducted by a team of consultants from GOSH in London and UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health into the impact of obesity in children has shown that these children develop stiffer arteries. This leads to stiffer arteries in adults which are linked to problems such as strokes and coronary artery disease which can lead to an earlier death. The study shows that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that obese children have higher rates the of stiffening of their arteries, which provides evidence that these children are at risk of heart disease when they grow older.

These health problems arise when childhood obesity continues into adolescence and then adulthood; particularly when the cause of weight gain is not addressed early. When poor eating patterns are not addressed early, ongoing weight gain can lead to overweight and then obesity.

Eyes

The good news is that health problems such as high blood cholesterol and blood pressure linked to obesity can be managed early in childhood. When left untreated, these health concerns can progress into life threatening problems later in life. Identifying and treating rapid

prevention measures should take place in childhood.

Excess weight leads to diabetes. Many children are suffering from type 2 diabetes, which over a long period leads to severe eye damage called retinopathy. It leads to vision loss through increased risk of retinal inflammation.

Obese children are more likely to suffer from asthma and sleep apnoea (difficulty in breathing). This problem can easily be resolved in childhood as the child is trained to eat healthily and shed excess MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2018 | 49

good living READ FOOD LABELS body fat. However, if left uncontrolled, the excess body fat eventually obstructs the nasal passage, reducing oxygen flow and causing breathlessness, disturbing sleep rhythm that also leads to poor sleep and fatigue.

Stomach Increased abdominal or visceral fat in children compounds the risk of diseases such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes and colon cancer. If obesity is checked during a child’s growing years, he can easily get rid of the visceral fat which is a precursor to all lifestyle diseases.

Pancreas Obese children are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes due to a poorly working pancreas. Early onset of diabetes leads to a prolonged exposure of pancreas to damage eventually destroying its capacity to produce any insulin, the important hormone that regulates blood sugar. In adults who have damaged pancreas, there is also an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

Liver As obesity and diabetes have become more common, so has fatty liver disease. Fat in the liver does not build overnight. It is a slow process and when abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome cause insulin resistance to remain unchecked for long, it causes a spike in fatty acid levels in blood which causes fat to accumulate in liver cells. Fat in liver cells causes inflammation and damage to liver tissue.

Knees and joints Obesity may increase the risk of osteoarthritis and the need for total knee-replacement. While this happens in adulthood with constant wear and tear of joints, doctors warn that fat children who continue to carry one-and-a-half times more body weight are usually putting their joints at risk from early on. This further affects their ability to participate in sport and can make daily simple tasks such as walking and sitting painful.

Skin Being overweight may cause skin problems due to several factors. Children are often appreciated for their chubbiness, but prolonged chubbiness indicates presence of excess body fat. As a child grows to be an adolescent, there are changes in hormones that may cause acanthosis nigricans, which are darkened, velvety areas of the neck and body folds, while stretching of the skin may result in stretch marks (striae). Increased strain on the leg veins may cause fluid retention, leg swelling, rupture of superficial capillaries (capillaritis), varicose veins, dermatitis, and even ulcers. Retained moisture in body folds encourages the growth of bacteria and fungi, leading to skin rashes and potential breakdown and a variety of infections, such as intertrigo. Finally, the foot may develop corns and calluses due to the increased weight. Be aware that, while all side effects of obesity actually take place in adulthood, prevention measures should take place in childhood – and children cannot implement these measures themselves.

The nutrition label on some of your favorite foods might sound like a foreign language, but it’s helpful to know which words and phrases mean added sugar. The nutrition label lists ingredients in order, from the predominant ingredient, the first one mentioned, to the least dominant, the last one mentioned. Look for words and phrases such as ‘fruit juice concentrate,’ ‘corn sweetener,’ ‘corn syrup,’ ‘high-fructose corn syrup,’ ‘honey’ and ‘dextrose,’ which signal that the food has added sugar. Sugar is usually added to foods such as breakfast cereal to make them more palatable to kids, but you will also find it in canned vegetables, baby food, cereals, peanut butter, bread, and tomato sauce. It is good practice to try to avoid any foods that have a long list of ingredients, keep it simple and raise your children on fresh foods, not processed ones.

SAFEGUARDING YOUR TODDLER’S HEALTH AT NURSERY Children who attend nursery tend to contract more upper respiratory tract infections (common cold) and other viruses than their counterparts who don’t go to school. The reason for this is because children at that age tend to be in very close proximity to each other and not have the very best hygiene habits in terms of hand washing, using tissues when they have a blocked nose or covering their mouths when they cough. Toddlers are still adapting and learning how to adopt these social behavioral habits. Dr. Mishal Al Kasimi, CEO and Pediatric Consultant at Health Shield Medical Center, advises on how you can increase your child’s immunity at nursery and keep them healthy and happy:

Tech them the right habits Teach your child from a very early age common hygiene habits, such as the right way to wash their hands and how they should cover their mouth when they cough.

Keep Them Balanced Ensure your child gets enough sleep at night by putting them to bed very early. Make sure they eat a well-balanced

diet and keep them hydrated – this goes a long way in preventing unwanted viral infections.

Immunisation Probably the most important piece of advice is to make sure that your child is up to date with all their vaccinations – nothing works better to boost your child’s immunity than their regular shots.

Communicate with the nursery Make sure that your child’s teachers and aides can properly identify when your child is sick and that the space itself is well-ventilated and has enough room for all the children. It is never a good idea to send your child to a nursery that packs all its children into one classroom, as the ratio of student to classroom space is very important.

No Place Like Home If your toddler is exhibiting early signs or symptoms of an illness, keep them at home. In doing so, you’re preventing that ‘ping-pong effect’ of each child infecting the other and bouncing the viruses from one child to the next.

TRAUMA IN CHILDREN: HOW TO RECOGNISE AND DEAL WITH IT

Trauma will typically create a stress response in a child that is higher and more prolonged than normal experiences, along with feelings of being trapped or helpless. Pam Nicholson, Certified Trauma Professional, explains.

60 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

T

rauma refers to any event that is outside the range of everyday human experience. In a child, trauma usually results in a feeling of great alarm, fright and often comes with noticeable changes in their personality. All of these things can result from a personal experience of a disturbing or alarming nature, or from witnessing an experience of threat or injury to someone else. Trauma affects each child in uniquely different ways. A car accident may severely affect a five-year-old. He may refuse to get back into his car seat for days or weeks. Another child of the same age may display little hesitation about climbing back into his seat. The reason for the differences in the reaction of children is that trauma is not defined by the event, but rather by the nervous system’s response to it.

RECOGNISING TRAUMA IN CHILDHOOD Children are dependent. The younger the child, the more dependent they are. They are unable to totally protect themselves or know when an adult-like situation may be beyond their coping abilities. Often, they are unable to verbally express their needs or feelings when something has adversely affected them. Since you can’t rely on them to tell you how upset they are, you will need to look for other tell-tale signs. Some of the common symptoms of trauma include: • Anxiety or anger • Hyperactivity or low self-esteem • Defiance or high-risk behaviours • Eating disorders • Avoidance or antisocial behaviours • Headaches or stomach aches • Learning or sleep difficulties • Introverted personality or difficulty trusting • Quieter and more distracted than usual Not every child who exhibits one of these behaviours has been impacted by trauma. Many such behaviours may be indicative of an unfulfilled basic need, an illness, a current stage of development, a temperament trait, lack of maturity, or a temporary minor stressor in a child’s life.

Whenever a child is behaving in a manner that feels disturbing or seems unusual, parents need to pay attention!

you should respond by ‘creating safety,’ the most vital response to trauma in a child. You should:

If you believe that your child is deliberately ‘acting out’ or ‘attentionseeking,’ it is good to pause to consider what the child may recently have been exposed to or may currently be experiencing. A parent is often wellplaced realise that an experience or incident ‘outside their normal range’ could be affecting their child.

• Stay calm

A child’s development, especially brain wiring, may be permanently affected by ongoing, unrecognised trauma. Yet trauma-impacted children can also be healed by caring adults who notice unusual behaviours, respond with sensitivity, and when necessary, seek outside professional support in a timely manner. Healthy relationships, with lots of communication with your child, are key to overcoming the impact of trauma in the life of a child.

MANAGING TRAUMA IN CHILDHOOD The Trigger Let’s take a typical scenario of a child spending the day at their friend’s home. If the child usually looks forward to these visits to play games, read stories and visit new places with his friend’s family, but then suddenly pleads with his parent not to go, this could be a sign that a trauma may have occurred during the last visit. His mother’s reminder that he will be visiting at the weekend may have ‘triggered’ a memory or flashback. Possible scenarios might include:

• Not bombard your child with questions • Let your child know you are listening, by via reflecting his feelings and thoughts back to him (e.g. “…so, you hate the idea of going to Jamal’s house and want to stay home with us”) • Use gentle, reassuring touch, such as rubbing his back or holding his hand • Model deep breathing for him while reassuring him that he is safe at home. Doing the above helps to decrease a child’s stress hormones and soothe them – this is a more important first response than asking questions and accusing the child of misbehaving. Later, when your child is calm, you can invite him to talk about the last visit to his friend’s house and find out more.

Talking to you About the Event It is very important in the healing process that a child has the opportunity to talk about the traumatic event, to recount it, and put words to what happened. As the mother, you can let him skip over the most upsetting parts when he first talks about it, if that is making him feel stressed. With each time you talk about it, gently encourage him to fill in more of the details, until the emotion surrounding the event has dissipated.

Giving Some Control

• He may have overheard a loud conversation or argument between adults at their home

Along with feeling safe, he needs some CONTROL. Allowing him to have input in planning where he spends time away from the home can help to meet this need.

• Maybe he was forced to eat something he disliked

Getting Outside Support

• Perhaps he was bullied by his friend’s sibling. Regardless of the cause, a child’s lower brain will remember the experience and immediately enter ‘survival mode’ - the fundamental purpose of our brains - to enable us to survive.

RESPONDING TO TRAUMA Provide Safety If you are faced with this kind of situation,

If your child’s worrying behaviour persists, increases, or he shares something more distressing, you might need to seek professional support. Note: Unfortunately, not all professionals are trauma-informed, so parents need to research therapists and agencies to discern if they are trauma-trained. YOUR ESSENTIAL SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR SUMMER

In the summers of this region, the rules of skincare change! The largest bodily organ, skin, is also the one that takes the full brunt of the heat, the sun rays, hot winds, sand storms, humidity and greater exposure to the drying effects of air conditioning. Here, we’ve asked skincare experts, Galderma 'the makers of cetaphil skincare range' to talk us through the basic foundations for good skincare at this challenging time of year.

H

ealthy skin can help you look good and feel good, and a smart skincare routine is a must for achieving a clear, glowing complexion. The summer temperatures make us perspire more and the winds and breezes can mean that more sand, airborne particles, dust and dirt become part of our complexion! Without a proper skincare routine, the pores of your skin are prone to more clogging and dulling of your shine, which can also potentially expose you 62 | JUNE 2018 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD

to even more skin problems. Despite the seemingly endless array of products, tools and treatments, a healthy skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated.

CLEANSER Everyday soaps can be harsh and irritating, so choose a cleanser that suits your specific skin type. Look for one that respects your skin’s normal pH balance and does not damage its

natural protective barriers. If you have oily skin, opt for a cleanser that is specially designed to combat clogged pores (non-comedogenic) and also regulates sebum/oil. Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser is especially designed for this purpose. Limit cleansing your face to twice a day - in the mornings and evenings. After cleansing, be sure to gently pat your skin dry instead of rubbing your face with a towel, which will ensure that you don’t cause irritation to the skin.

POWERED BY:

DAY MOISTURISER If you have dry skin, apply moisturiser while your skin is still damp. This helps to retain moisture and keep your skin soft and smooth. You might think that oily skin doesn’t need moisturiser, but even if you notice that you have excess oil, in fact you still do need to moisturise, as even visibly oily skin can still lack water. Just be sure to use a non-comedogenic formula, as this means it is specially designed not to clog pores.

Using a moisturiser with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a great way to make sure you don’t skip sun protection.

SUNSCREEN SPF is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet (UVB) rays. The main cause of reddening and sunburn, UVB rays tend to damage the epidermis, skin's outer layers, where the most common (and least dangerous) forms of skin cancer occur. According to the US Skin Cancer Foundation, SPF15 is the minimum value for adequate daily protection. Sunscreen isn’t just for hot days in this region. Using sunscreen regularly can help guard against free radicals induced by UV radiation, which can cause skin damage and aging. While SPF 15 is the minimum value you need for daily protection, sunscreens that carry an SPF of 30 (or higher) offer even better protection, and is the smart choice if you will be spending a significant amount of time in the sun. Be sure to seek out a product with broad spectrum UV protection, such as Cetaphil Daylong SPF 50+ Gel, to protect you from both UVA rays (that cause aging) and UVB rays (that cause sunburn). And remember, while water resistance helps to ensure that your sunscreen doesn’t wash (or sweat) off, extended exposure to the sun requires a second helping of sunscreen—so be sure to read the label and follow the instructions for reapplication.

NIGHT MOISTURISER Using a moisturiser before going to

even if you have oily skin you still need to moisturise

bed helps keep your skin hydrated through the night, and will help your skin feel balanced and smoothed when you wake up to face the world. Using a night moisturiser helps you to take advantage of the skin’s natural repair mechanisms, which are more active at night.

EYE CARE Don’t ignore your eyes in your skincare routine. The skin around the eyes is delicate and thinner than the rest of your skin, and using an eye gel or cream before going to bed at night helps to hydrate, brighten and smooth the eye area, helping to prevent lines and dark circles.

In the summer months

DON’T FORGET YOUR BODY! Though your face might be the thing you focus on when you look in the mirror, don’t neglect your body. Because we’re covered up during most of the day, there is a tendency to give the skin on your arms, legs, back and trunk second priority—but this also can get dry and irritated. Be sure to use a gentle body wash, and make it a habit of moisturising immediately after stepping out of the shower or bath. Try the new Cetaphil line of gentle body washes, including Fragrance-Free, Refreshing, and Soothing. MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JUNE 2018 | 63
