One of the Îrst things you may notice when you discover you are pregnant is a change in breast size. Your breasts continue to change throughout pregnancy, sometimes going up a couple of cup sizes. All our bras are wire-free and specially designed to ensure nothing can dig into your delicate breast tissue during this rapid time of change. When do I need my Îrst maternity bra? When your current bras feels uncomfortable at around 8 weeks. Moses baskets are ideal for newborns as they’re small and comfortable. They can easily be moved around your home making them perfect for daytime naps or longer sleeps at night. See page 56-57

Cribs are smaller versions of cots and are suitable for newborns until about 6 months old (depending on the size of your baby). See page 58-59

Cots can be used for newborns and will see you through their baby years. Just remember to put your baby in the feet to foot position (your baby’s feet placed at the bottom of the cot to minimise the risk of them wriggling under the covers).

Cot beds convert into toddler beds when your little one grows bigger, so they’re a great investment. Remember they are slightly bigger than cots so measure your nursery before buying.

It is recommended that a new mattress is purchased for each child. A second hand mattress will have seen better days and a new mattress will provide better support and will be more hygienic for your baby.

Check the size to ensure little legs and arms don’t get trapped between the mattress and cot. There must be no more than a 3cm gap around the edge of the mattress, so check the dimensions before ordering your mattress.

Immerse them in the hustle and bustle of normal life in the day, and get out of the house – daily fresh air and daylight will help regulate your baby’s body clock. At nap times, keep the curtains open and don’t minimise noise. At night, do the opposite, and during night feeds keep your voice low, with little stimulation. This contrast will eventually help your baby learn that night-time is for sleeping.

R O U T I N E M AT T E R S It is vital to establish a good bedtime routine as it is the foundation for healthy sleep habits for life. Every night, set aside 30 minutes for your routine. Start with a short warm bath, then take your baby straight into the room where they’ll sleep, keeping the lights dim. Dress your baby for bed, then give them a cuddle and kiss before settling them in their cot. During the early weeks your baby will probably need a feed right before bed, but in time, you can try feeding before bath time, so they become less dependent on sucking to sleep. Aim to put your baby in their cot slightly awake so they get used to settling themselves.

Remember, your child may need more or less sleep than average, so try not to compare your child to others. If they are thriving... then you’re getting it right.

Car seats are divided into groups, and it is your child’s weight (not age) that matters. Weigh your child before visiting a Mothercare store so we can help you select the correct car seat as per the ECE/ R44 standard.

The law states that all children must use a car seat until they are either 135cm in height or the age of 12 – whichever they reach ³rst. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure children under the age of 14 years are restrained correctly in accordance with the law.

Ensure you arV T]VRc `_ eYV SV_V³ts of \eeping your child rearward-facing for as long as possible. There are a number of options once your child is ready to move into a Group 1 car seat and our car seat experts will give you all the information you need to ma\e this decision.

what is i-Size? A new EU regulation that aims to improve the safety level of child car seats, and so provides improved protection. i-Size became a recognised legislation for car seats on 9th July 2013. It does not replace the ECE/R44 legislation, instead it will continue in tandem as an option.

5 KEY OBJECTIVES

Improved protection at higher forces for side & front impact and a much better protection of head and neck, with the addition of side impact testing as part of the i-Size regulation.

Rearward-facing travel is mandatory up to 15 months old for i-Size car seats because studies show rearward-facing travel can be safer in a frontal impact.

i-Size promotes ISOFIX, which has less chance of SVZ_X ³eted incorrectly than belted car seats.

B A BY C A R R I E R S A baby carrier or sling lets you keep your little one close and provides a convenient way of transporting your baby. When you first use a baby sling or carrier please ask someone to help you so that you can practise putting it on and off. Check the sling/carrier on a regular basis to ensure no parts are worn or broken.

Baby should be carried at carer’s chest height and no lower than the waist. Adjust the sling/carrier to fit the size of the carer and ensure the sling fits securely for the carer and the baby.

Take care not to let baby get too hot or cold when using a sling/carrier. Remember your body also creates warmth for baby. Layered clothing for your baby is ideal.

feeding tips Breastfeeding has manj SV_V³ts both for mums and babies, especially when it comes to protecting them against infections and diseases. Don’t worry if you feel it’s taking a while to get the hang of breastfeeding. Your midwife, health visitor and friends who have breastfed can all be a great support in the early days, and we’ve also got some tips and advice cards in store.

A f te r y o u r b a b y i s b o r n . . . Straight after birth: Your breasts produce a creamy substance called colostrum which provides your baby with early nourishment and antibodies until your milk comes in. Colostrum is very concentrated so your newborn will only need small amounts at ³rst. Within the Îrst hour after birth: If you feel up to it, you could try breastfeeding in the ³rst hour. This can help with the bonding process Remember, your baby’s mouth should completely cover the areola below the nipple and your nipple should be far back in your baby’s mouth. 2-4 days after birth: Your breasts will start feeling full and this is a sign that your milk has come in. Midwives usually recommend that you feed your baby on demand (whenever they are hungry) at ³rst until breastfeeding is established and you feel comfortable.

Do wash all your feeding equipment with hot soapy water using a teat and bottle brush before sterilising. Do check the temperature of your baby’s milk before each feed. Do read and follow any formula milk instructions carefully. Do throw away any unused milk after your baby has ³nished feeding and always make up a fresh bottle for the next feed.

Don’t... Don’t put boiling water straight into the bottle; instead allow to cool for no longer than 30 minutes. Don’t try to force your baby to ³_ish each feed, baby’s appetites vary and sometimes they’re just not hungry. Don’t mix breastmilk and formula milk in the same bottle – breastmilk can be kept (and frozen) but formula milk needs to be discarded after each feed. Don’t heat your baby’s milk in the microwave, hot spots can scald.

bathtime tips Bathing a newborn can be surprisingly daunting for ³rst time parents! Take a look at our advice cards in store for information on all those ‘³rsts’ from topping and tailing to cutting your baby’s nails. Here are some tips to make it safe, easy and fun.

Get everything ready before you start – towel, toiletries, ´annel, thermometer and whatever your baby will be wearing to bed (plus a clean nappy!) Being organised makes being a parent so much easier.

If your baby cries at bath time, spend 10 minutes playing, giggling and tickling their toes so they feel relaxed before you bathe them. Then make sure you

Undress your baby but keep that nappy on! Wrap your little one in a towel for warmth and gently clean their face (make sure you clean the neck too as it gets really grubby when they are small). However, if it is necessary for them to sit in the front seat when in a rearward facing seat the airbag must be de-activated. Swaddling is the practice of wrapping babies in swaddling cloths, large muslins, lightweight blankets or cotton sheets. Swaddling keeps a baby’s arms close to their body and legs snuggled together, which may help your baby to sleep soundly and securely by recreating the comfort and snugness of the womb.

tips and advice... choose lightweight fabrics for good air circulation, ideally soft and stretchy to wrap around baby’s body. regularly check your baby is in the correct sleeping position, on their back. swaddling can help relieve symptoms of colic by providing gentle, even pressure around the abdomen. swaddling may also help with positioning your baby for breastfeeding by tucking away wriggling little hands and arms. please remember swaddling is only intended for use with young babies. do not allow your baby to get too warm – regularly check your baby’s temperature. babies should not be swaddled at every sleep or nap time.

tips for successful feeding your baby should start with some fairly quick shallow sucks and slower, deeper and more rhythmic. properly. When his sucking slows or he starts falling asleep it may be time to take him off and wind him. If he seems fully fed you can put him down to sleep. If he’s still hungry, he can feed on the second breast until full. how long your baby feeds can vary from as little as 10 minutes to as much as an hour or more - this will depend on how fast

look for the signs your baby is feeding well and getting enough milk if: he settles well after feeds; he has at least 6 wet nappies a day; he gains the right amount of weight. your baby is not feeding well if: he falls asleep at the breast but then wakes and cries when you try to settle him; his nappies are dry or his urine is concentrated and smelly; his weight gain is poor. If so, check your breastfeeding position with your lactation consultant or gynaecologist and ask for further advice. never be afraid to seek help if you are struggling.

This advisory card is full of useful advice on how to bottle feed your baby, what you’ll need to get and how to keep everything perfectly clean and safe for your little one. Breastfeeding is best for baby – if at all possible out more within our breastfeeding advisory card.

keeping everything clean and sterile whether you’re using expressed breast milk or formula, careful and thorough washing and sterilising is essential. use a bottle and teat brush to help you clean all the equipment thoroughly before you put it in the sterilising unit. always wash your hands before you take any items out of the steriliser. when using sterilising units, read the instructions carefully and practise using the unit before you actually need to use it.

making up feeds always wash your hands before making up a feed. carefully follow the formula milk manufacturer’s instructions. powdered formula comes in a tin or box and is not sterile. To make up formula milk safely, feeds should be made up with water at 70°C (i.e. using the water within 30 mins of boiling) to kill any potential bacteria. make up a feed when you need it. It is now not safe to make up a batch of bottles to store in the fridge.

washing bottles

then add the powdered milk to the water – the right number of scoops of formula powder will depend on your baby’s age and needs (see formula instructions). place the cap on the bottle and then shake from side to side to mix the powder and water together. cool the feed down by placing the bottle in a jug of cold water. Always shake the bottle and check the temperature (with a few drops on the back of your wrist) before feeding your baby. if your baby is unwell or premature, follow all these instructions and maybe consider using ready-made formula

throw away any unused milk – whether breast or formula, it’s not safe to reheat or use it later as it is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Weaning is a big step for your baby and you’ll need to take care to offer a nutritious diet. This advisory card is full of handy tips to help you create a well balanced healthy diet for your baby, and overcome some of the common problems that you might face when weaning your baby.

how to breastfeed weaning your baby what to give your baby the amount your baby eats will vary. Always let your baby decide how much to eat. s/he may begin with about two teaspoons once a day but as their feeding skills develop babies begin to eat more food and need to drink less milk. By a year, they should be eating minced and chopped family foods and you can cut out all bottles of milk. foods right from the beginning of weaning so that offer your baby can play with food and start to learn how to self feed. Start with soft foods like sticks of cooked vegetables, cooked pasta pieces, toast or pieces of soft ripe fruit. When they begin eating minced and chopped food from about foods e.g. raw vegetable 9-12 months you can give harder sticks and apple slices. up to 6 months, most babies won’t need vitamin supplements. After this, breastfed babies should have baby vitamin drops containing vitamins A and D. Non-breastfed babies who drink less than a pint of formula a day should also be given drops. give a mixture of foods so your baby gets all the nutrients they need. Include: – meat, eggs and pulses – starchy foods like potato, rice, pasta and breakfast cereals – fruit and vegetables – cheese and yogurt used in moderation, jars aren’t a bad thing – they’re convenient, and made without additives and salt. But jar food tends to be smoother and some babies it hard to move onto lumpier food. And it’s better for your baby to learn to like your family foods that are made with fresh meat, eggs, vegetables and fruit. if your baby has a vegetarian diet, include starchy beans, peas, lentils, dahl, tofu and eggs for protein and iron. overcoming common problems if your baby doesn’t want to eat lumpy food, try increasing the lumpiness very gradually, moving from puréeing to thicker and thicker mash and then onto mash with soft lumps. Offering foods can help a lump-phobic baby to try new textures. if your baby doesn’t seem to like vegetables, s/he just needs longer to learn to like that taste. Just keep offering them. Naturally sweet vegetables (e.g. sweet potatoes, yams, carrots and parsnips) are often more popular choices. babies learn by copying so eat the foods you want your baby to learn to like. After about 12 months it takes much longer to learn to like new tastes.– sometimes you have to offer a new food about 15 times before your child will try it. Always offer new foods with a positive expression/or in a positive way- it really helps. But don’t get into a battle about it – mealtimes should ideally be fun for you and your baby if your older baby doesn’t want to eat much, it may be that s/he is drinking too much milk or diluted juice. try to do a little research before you go, as every cot, pram and steriliser provided at your destination means one less thing for you to take with you. If there are laundry facilities you can take fewer clothes and if the hire car company provides car seats it means you won’t have to. making things easier if you’re travelling by car take nurser y rhyme and stor y CD’s, a selection of distracting toys, and a supply of snacks to avert boredom. Plan frequent stops. An adult in the back often helps. be prepared for travel sickness, take suitable bags in the car or on the plane plus lots of wipes. Consider travel sickness tablets for older children or anti sickness pressure point wrist bands. if you’re try to book aisle seats close to the loo, and pack small toys (bring them out one at a time) and snacks (to avoid ears popping). Take plenty of drinks, a change of clothes for baby (perhaps even a clean top for you). check whether you can buy nappies, wipes, formula milk and baby food at the resort - saves you having to take lots of supplies. if you’re going overseas, make sure your baby has a passport.

sun-safety if you’re pregnant your skin may be more sensitive to the sun, so up the SPF, drink plenty of water and stay in the shade whenever possible. small babies should be kept out of the sun altogether so take a pram parasol, or sun shade to provide cover. A pop-up beach play shade is useful for day time naps on the beach and for breastfeeding out of the sun. buy a high SPF for children and tr y to give them a good coating before they get dressed each morning (even if it looks cloudy - they can still burn). You can always top up on the beach and after swimming, UV sunsuits give great peace of mind and protection. show a good example by wearing a sun hat and insisting children wear hats too.

During the transition from crawling to walking, babies enjoy anything which they can use to pull themselves up into a standing position. Baby walkers help to serve this purpose well, if used with care and under adult supervision.

baby walker safety Baby walkers are designed so that babies can sit in the walker and then move it around by pushing it along with their feet. Although, they’re called baby walkers, they are not really designed to help babies learn to walk, but more to give them a degree of mobility, to have a fun playtime session with the parents (or carer) and for your baby; the fun of being able to see the world from a different more up right position. The following advice is essential to consider before your baby uses a walker. carefully follow the instructions always check the walker is correctly assembled, thoroughly that comes read over the user guide or instruction with your baby walker. Keep it in a safe place, should you need to refer to it again at any time. never leave your baby unattended – the parent or carer needs to share and be part of this play time activity. surfaces. newborn up to 6 months at this age, babies are fascinated by faces – after just one day, a baby will prefer their mother’s face to that of a stranger. tiny babies love to have ‘conversations’ – so copy his smiles, frowns and gestures and talk baby talk with him. even though they can’t hold things yet, babies still enjoy watching you wiggle a teddy or a rattle for their entertainment, and also make sure your baby has lots of tummy time play. look out for ‘cues’ that show that your baby is ready to play – e.g. face-to-face contact, reaching out hands, turning eyes or head towards you, smiling, babbling and cooing. remember, babies of this age need lots of sleep and tire very easily. from 4 months your baby will now be reaching out and grabbing things, and will be much more physical too, maybe starting to roll or sit. to help your baby become more ‘body aware’, play physical games such as gentle swooshing them into the air, or blowing raspberries on their tummy. reading to your baby is very important – he or she will love hearing your voice, and over time will pick up language skills quicker and develop a love of books. at this stage babies can’t focus on two things at once – so give them a new toy and they will drop and forget the one they are playing with. 6 to 12 months sorting and playing comes along tremendously as your baby has more control over their hand to eye coordination. allow plenty of time for tummy play, rolling and crawling. from baby books to shape sorters and stacking beakers –

out how things work for themselves, with on hand help from you if needed. intricate rattles with more parts, loops and textures can be really interesting to your baby now. consider toys for the pushchair, highchair and in the car, to help avoid your baby getting bored. start bedtime stories from around 6 months (or before) – even if only short and sweet your baby will love the attention. baby swimming, tumble tots or baby yoga might also be worth trying at this stage – ask your Health Visitor for details.
