sleep safety … advice

Babies don’t come with an inbuilt body clock and at first, day and night will blend together. They will have sensed the difference between night and day in the womb from your movements or stillness, but cannot connect this with light and dark and instead will use their hunger as a sleep cue.

• always place baby on their back to sleep • avoid letting your baby get too hot or too cold by using a room thermometer (16 to 20°C is ideal) • place your baby to sleep in a separate moses basket or crib in the same room as you for the first 6 months • use a new, firm, flat, waterproof mattress • don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping • never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby • don’t smoke, or let anyone smoke around you or your baby during pregnancy or after the birth

how can you help?

Immerse them in the hustle and bustle of normal life in the day, and get out of the house – daily fresh air and daylight will help regulate your baby’s body clock. At nap times, keep the curtains open and don’t minimise noise. At night, do the opposite, and during night feeds keep your voice low, with little stimulation. This contrast will eventually help your baby learn that night-time is for sleeping.

routine matters It is vital to establish a good bedtime routine as it is the foundation for healthy sleep habits for life. Every night, set aside 30 minutes for your routine. Start with a short warm bath, then take your baby straight into the room where they’ll sleep, keeping the lights dim. Dress your baby for bed, then give them a cuddle and a kiss before settling them in their cot.

During the early weeks your baby will need a feed right before bed, but in time, try feeding earlier, so they become less dependent on sucking to sleep. Aim to put your baby in their cot slightly awake so they get used to settling themselves.

always remember: your baby may need more or less sleep than average, so try not to compare them to others if they are thriving… then you’re getting it right remember, always place your baby on their back to sleep

swaddle and muslin blankets Being tucked up into a swaddle feels a bit like being held and cuddled. This can be soothing and comforting for some tiny babies, mimicking the snugness of the womb. Swaddling can help prevent their startle reflex from waking them and create a feeling of security and calm. You can swaddle with a special swaddle blanket, a lightweight blanket, or a muslin blanket. If your baby likes to be swaddled – and they’ll let you know if they don’t – remember to swaddle safely.

I love my new home collection! It’s full of life, fun and colour but still with the classic little bird vintage feel. The cot is my absolute favourite and turns into the sweetest toddler bed. Moses baskets are ideal for newborns as they’re small and comfortable.

They can easily be moved around your home making them perfect for daytime naps or longer sleeps at night.

Cribs are a smaller version of cots and are suitable for newborns until about six months old (depending on the size of your baby).

Cots can be used for newborns and will see you through their baby years. Just remember to put your baby in the feet to foot position (your baby’s feet placed at the bottom of the cot) to minimise the risk of them wriggling under the covers.

Dropside cots are suitable from newborn until approx. 2 years, with a three-position adjustable base and easy-to-lower side that allows you to lift your baby in and out with minimal fuss.

Cot beds convert into toddler beds when your little one grows bigger, so they’re a great investment. Remember they are slightly bigger than cots so measure your nursery before buying.

Analogue or digital monitors allow you to listen to your baby from another room.

Digital monitors offer more channels and clearer sound.

A video monitor allows you to not only hear your baby, but lets you see them too. A video camera transmits pictures to a screen on the parent unit. Some feature remote pan, tilt and zoom to adjust the view, and infra-red so you can keep an eye on your baby after dark.

Sensor pad is placed under baby’s mattress to detect movement and breathing. An alarm will sound if no movement is detected after 20 seconds.

Some models also offer audio monitoring.

Connected video baby monitors with high definition Wi-Fi cameras help you keep an eye on your baby from a parent monitor, compatible smartphone, tablet, or computer directly from the Hubble App. Helping to keep you and your baby connected anywhere.

Both analogue and digital monitors allow you to listen to your baby from another room, but digital monitors offer more channels and a clearer sound. Here are the basics to help you decide which model is best for you and your baby.

choosing nursery furniture With a little one on the way, choosing and organising your baby’s nursery furniture can be an exciting project for you and your partner to share. There’s a bit more to it than choosing styles and colours of course, and it’s a good idea to measure before you buy.

recommended:

� cot – look out for options with drop sides (which makes it easier to lift baby in and out), height

� feeding chair – pick from comfy rockers or gliding chairs which are perfect for

adjustment (so you can keep lowering the

sleepy cuddles and feeding – some have

mattress as they get taller) and teething rails

cushioned footstools too

� cot bed – these convert from a cot into a toddler bed as your little one grows – remember, they are slightly bigger than cots

� mattress – there are plenty of options to match your baby’s snoozing needs – make sure it’s at least 10cm deep, and fits snugly up against the cot sides

� changing table or cot-top changer – makes those outfit and nappy changes far less of a strain and there are handy places for changing essentials

� dresser – look for deep drawers for bedding

recommended:

� shelves and storage baskets – ideal for storing those tiny socks and sleepsuits, and toys and books as your little one grows

� under-cot drawer – utilises the space under baby’s cot – the perfect place for bedding

� pictures, lampshades and bunting – adds an individual touch and are stimulating for baby during the day

At mothercare we know that a healthy baby is a happy baby. That’s why we’ve put together a series of helpful feeding tips so that your baby gets off to the best possible start.

feeding tips Breastfeeding has many benefits both for mums and babies, especially when it comes to protecting them against infections and diseases.

Don’t worry if you feel it’s taking a while to get the hang of breastfeeding. Your midwife, health visitor and friends who have breastfed can all be a great support in the early days, and we’ve also got some tips, advice and videos online.

3-6 months pregnant: Read up on breastfeeding and familiarise yourself with ‘how to breastfeed’ guides. Visit mothercare.com for videos and lots of helpful tips and advice.

36-38 weeks: Get measured for a nursing bra.

after your baby is born... straight after birth: Your breasts produce a creamy substance called colostrum which provides your baby with early nourishment and antibodies until your milk comes in. Colostrum is very concentrated so your newborn will only need small amounts at first. within the first hour after birth: If you feel up to it, you could try breastfeeding. This can help with the bonding process, and remember, your baby’s mouth should completely cover the areola below the nipple and your nipple should be far back in your baby’s mouth.

2-4 days after birth: Your breasts will start feeling full and this is a sign that your milk has come in.

Midwives usually recommend that you feed your baby on demand (whenever they are hungry) at first until breastfeeding is established and you feel comfortable.

do read and follow any formula milk instructions carefully do check the temperature of your baby’s milk before each feed do throw away any unused milk after your baby has finished feeding and always prepare a fresh bottle for the next feed

don’t... don’t put boiling water straight into the bottle; instead allow to cool for no longer than 30 minutes don’t try to force your baby to finish each feed; babies’ appetites vary and sometimes they’re just not hungry don’t mix breastmilk and formula milk in the same bottle – breastmilk can be kept (and frozen), but formula milk needs to be discarded after each feed don’t heat your baby’s milk in the microwave, as hot spots can scald

At mothercare we understand how important it is to find the right car seat for each age and stage. That’s why we’ve put together a series of helpful tips, to make sure you have everything you need to know, in preparation for the journey ahead.

what to consider

what is the law?

1. Car seats are divided into groups, and it is your child’s weight (not age) that matters. Weigh your child before visiting a mothercare store so we can help you select the correct car seat as per the ECE/ R44 standard. i-Size or R129 car seats take into consideration your child’s height.

The law states that all children must use a car seat until they are either 135cm in height or the age of 12 – whichever they reach first. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure children under the age of 14 years are restrained correctly in accordance with the law.

2. Ensure you are clear on the benefits of keeping your child rearward-facing for as long as possible.

There are a number of options once your child is ready to move into a Group 1 car seat and our car seat advisors will give you all the information you need to make this decision.

3. The make and model of your car is also important, so if it’s going to be used in multiple cars, make sure you let our advisors know as not all car seats are compatible with all vehicles.

4. Our car seat advisors will demonstrate how to fit your chosen car seat and ensure that you are clear on the features and how to use them, so you’ll be confident on how to use the seat safely when you leave our stores.

5. ISOFIX is the standard system built into all new cars and car seat manufacturers, designed to make installing your child’s car seat quick and easy. With ISOFIX you simply ‘plug in’ a compatible car seat to anchor points in the car.

On 9th February 2017, new regulations regarding backless booster seats came into effect. As of this date, newly designed and manufactured models will only be approved for use by children over 125cm or 22kg. At mothercare, we recommend high back booster seats as they offer better protection for older children.

i-Size i-Size car seats are a new, different kind of car seat which offer your little one a safer way to travel and improved protection in the event of an accident. They make up the first phase of the new European car seat regulation R129, which will eventually take over from the old car seat regulations. i-Size car seats are all ISOFIX so they have less chance of being incorrectly fitted and they provide improved protection at higher forces for side and front impact. With i-Size car seats, which are fitted taking your child’s height into account, your little one has to stay rearward-facing until they’re 15 months old which is safer and helps protect their neck and spine in an accident.

Mothercare slings are designed to be used for full term healthy babies. For babies under the care of a paediatrician, seek advice before using.

Babies should be carried in slings in the same position they would be in if you cradled them in your arms.

Baby’s face should be visible at all times and not covered by body or by fabric. Ensure baby’s face is pointing outwards with plenty of ventilation. This also means baby should be carried on the carer’s front, not back.

Regularly check that the baby remains in the correct position.

Be particularly vigilant when using a sling with a young baby, or a baby with a heavy cold.

Always read and follow the instructions and product labelling for the sling. These are designed to inform you how to use the product safely. Remember that all slings are designed to have slightly different features.

•W hen you first use a baby sling or carrier, please ask someone to help you so that you can practise putting it on and taking it off. Check the sling/carrier on a regular basis to ensure no parts are worn or broken.
