I am so grateful for your support of Mother McAuley. Together, we are part of a long-standing tradition and legacy of empowering courageous women to change the world.
We continue to attract bright, enthusiastic young women to join the ranks of our 29,000 alumnae. These young women are bold and confident. They are unafraid to take on new challenges, and their hard work and dedication leads them to excel in the classroom, on the playing field, on the stage, and in every facet of their activities here at McAuley.
This legacy has turned McAuley into a destination school. Families willingly commit to travel to 99th Street because they know that a McAuley education is worth the effort. Our college-preparatory curriculum, grounded in the liberal arts, nurtures the growth of the whole student. With more than 50 student clubs and organizations, a dynamic athletics program, a strong focus on visual and performing arts, and a commitment to Mercy values and service, we foster both academic and personal development in an inclusive, well-rounded environment.
I am proud to share that McAuley is the largest single-gender school in Chicago, the fifth largest all-girls school in the country, and one of the largest Catholic high schools in the city. We are strong because of the Sisters of Mercy, who have been visionary leaders throughout our long history; our steadfast dedication to our mission; thoughtful strategic fiscal oversight; our families who continue to value a single gender education for their daughters; and the support of you, our generous community.

Mighty Macs Soar in ABC 7 Friday Flyover
On September 15, 2023, our Mighty Macs had an incredible time with ABC 7 news as the featured Friday flyover school. ABC’s Terrell Brown sang Taylor Swift with A Capella, sipped Starbucks in the Kitty Mac Cafe, played volleyball with the State Champs, crowd-surfed with MacNation on our turf field, and officially became a Mighty Mac when he threw on the M costume himself. Lights, Scoreboard, and a New Era for McAuley Athletics
On April 30, 2024, the McAuley community gathered to celebrate a major milestone with the unveiling of a brand new scoreboard and state-of-the-art LED lights on our turf field—thanks to the generous support of Marquette Bank, the Tom Hopkins Foundation, and an anonymous donor. President Carey Temple Harrington ‘86 shared her gratitude, highlighting the $2 million investment that makes McAuley the first all-girls school in Chicago to feature a turf field with top-tier amenities.
Honoring Sister Mary Brian Costello and Sister Corrine Raven
On October 12, 2023, McAuley honored two extraordinary leaders: Sister Mary Brian Costello, RSM, and Sister Corinne Raven, RSM, with a special blessing and dedication ceremony led by President Carey Temple Harrington ‘86 and Sister Sue Sanders, RSM, PhD ‘69. Sister Mary Brian Costello, who served at McAuley from 1959-1973, made significant contributions as an English teacher, Curriculum Director, and Principal. She championed innovative teaching methods, integrated liberal arts and critical thinking into the curriculum, and introduced advanced placement classes and a television studio to enhance learning. In recognition of her impact, The Sister Brian Costello Learning Resource Center was dedicated in her honor in 2022.
Sister Corinne, who served McAuley from 1978-1997, also held numerous roles including English Department Chair, Principal, and Board of Trustees member. Her leadership was marked by a passionate commitment to education and a deep dedication to the students she served. Sister Corinne was instrumental in the construction of the main gym and played a pivotal role in advancing equity in women’s sports. Her warmth and welcoming nature truly embodied of the spirit of Catherine McAuley.
Mercy Women in Action
Mother McAuley has a robust scholarship program, offering more than 50 named scholarships each year thanks to the generous support of our scholarship donors. Our named scholarships have been established in honor of family members, classmates, foundations, and more, and range from a one-time $250 award to renewable half-tuition awards, and all have made an impact on our students.
In addition, Mother McAuley is proud to partner with external scholarship organizations in Chicago that assist students with school tuition. These organizations not only provide financial assistance for students and families, but many also offer wrap-around services, including tutoring, college application assistance and support, career exposure opportunities, mentorship, and so much more.
These scholarship opportunities play a vital role in making the dream of experiencing the lifetime advantage of a Mother McAuley education a reality for our students and their families. As their needs increase year after year, we remain committed to increasing our financial aid and scholarship support in partnership with donors.
Your Gifts Help Her Soar
Sophia Rowan ‘24 graduated this May primed and ready for her next adventure to the United States Air Force Academy. With full-tuition scholarships to the University of Notre Dame and the University of Chicago, full-ride offers to the University of Alabama and the University of Tulsa, and acceptance into top-ranked business programs at Indiana University and the University of Illinois, not even the sky was the limit for Sophia’s future.
“Among the many, many lessons I’ve learned in these halls, this is the most valuable - I’ve learned that I am capable of doing very difficult things - and this is both a comfort and a challenge.
Each experience I’ve been blessed with has challenged me to believe in myself a little more and become a fuller version of myself.”
And it all started with her choice to attend Mother McAuley four years ago. Throughout her four years, Sophia gained confidence in herself, learned to believe in her own abilities and potential, and made lifelong friends and memories. She took advantage of the endless opportunities afforded to her as a Mighty Macshe joined the after-school performance group, A Cappella; was a member of the water polo team and helped lead them to a second place state finish this year; won multiple regional championships as a member of the Math Macs team; and worked hard in her classes, graduating with ten AP college-level courses, accolades as a National Merit Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction, and memberships in four of our honor societies as well as the Catherine McAuley Honors Scholars.
She credits her success to the teachers, coaches, and students she encountered as a Mighty Mac. Their unwavering support helped her realize her potential and encouraged her to work hard and dream big.
A Heart Full of Gratitude and Joy
“The opportunities I’ve been given would never have been possible without attending Mother McAuley, and my ability to attend Mother McAuley would have not been possible without the support of the scholarships I have received here,” Sophia shared.
Indeed, Sophia already understood the importance of scholarships as an incoming freshman. When she was notified that she received the Agatha O’Brien Scholarship, a renewable scholarship awarded based on student
performance in the Entrance Exam, she remembers her pride in contributing towards the education her parents worked so hard to provide for her and her three sisters.
During her four years at McAuley, she was also awarded the Tradition of Excellence Scholarship, Marsillo Family Memorial Scholarship, Betty and Sister Therese Windham Science Scholarship, and the John V. and Mary Ann Robinson Scholarship.
A Bright Future
Sophia was officially appointed to the United States Air Force Academy during the McAuley Honors Assembly on May 7, 2024, by Lieutenant Colonel Tim Grebs, Admissions Liaison Officer to the United States Air Force Academy. Sophia is the second student in McAuley’s history to be appointed to the Air Force Academy, and she is one of approximately 25 students in Illinois to have been appointed in 2024.
Sophia is currently enrolled in Calculus II, Intro to Computing and Cyber Operations, Intro to Physics, and History of Warfare at the Air Force Academy.
“My favorite class is history,” Sophia shared, “because we use a discussion style class and a cultural approach to deep dive into historical conflicts, which has made history feel real and personal.”
She has found that she is well prepared for her courses and workload. “The number one skill McAuley taught me was to take charge of my own learning - to find support when I needed it, whether that be from visiting the math center, meeting my teachers one on one, or pulling out my textbook.” She continues, “McAuley taught me that lots of people are willing to help if you only ask, and knowing this has helped me find the resources I need to thrive in my first semester at the Academy.”
Full Circle Moments
At McAuley, we educate our students in the Mercy tradition, infusing our curriculum and extracurricular experiences with core values that instill a strong ethical and moral compass. We empower our young women to reach for their loftiest goals, and encourage them in the process to uplift and support their peers, to give back to the communities that helped them succeed, and to advocate for and bring along the next generation.
Going Above and Beyond
Jamia Jackson ‘16 received her bachelor of psychology from Northern Illinois University and her Master of Social Work from Aurora University. Since December 2023, she has brought her expertise and Mercy values to her role as Manager of Education for the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF). This organization provides scholarships, academic programs, and personal support to approximately 500 students in Chicagoland each year.
As a Daniel Murphy Scholar herself, Jamia understands the impact this scholarship has on students’ confidence and success. Wrap-around services include college counseling; mentoring and affinity groups; tutoring; and summer internships, service projects, study abroad experiences and paid travel to academic summits and seminars.
In her role, Jamia coordinates with partner schools, families and scholars, and has the chance to work with current McAuley students who are Daniel Murphy Scholars. This spring, she gladly took on an extra project - proposing and organizing the first DMSF Project Prom.
This prom dress donation drive and fitting event helped scholars find all of the items they needed for prom, free of cost. It was important to Jamia to help relieve the financial burden of this milestone event and ensure their scholars were able to experience such a special moment and celebration.

Empowering the Next Generation of Women
Kylie Trendle ‘24 is pursuing her bachelor of science in elementary education and teaching from Saint Xavier University. In July 2024, she began an internship with the Franciscan Ministries, which sponsors the Madonna Foundation and its scholars program.
The Madonna Scholars Program provides scholarships to young women who wish to attend one of Chicago’s all-girls Catholic high schools. Along with tuition assistance, scholars receive programming in college readiness, financial literacy, academic support, leadership training, service learning, and spiritual well-being.
Kylie is a Madonna Scholar herself, and is now able to give back and help empower the young women who will come after her. This November, Kylie brought a group of McAuley Madonna scholars to one of their career day events, and has been able to assist in organizing and planning some of the organization’s fundraisers and events.

Grant Update
Throughout Fiscal Year 2024, we received generous support from numerous private foundations. These foundations responded to targeted requests for funding, including scholarships, enhancing the effectiveness of our programs and advancing various campus improvement projects identified by our Senior Leadership Team. Highlighted below are a few of our partners who have been instrumental in supporting our mission.
SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE
Aileen S. Andrew Foundation Among the priorities of the Aileen S. Andrew Foundation is supporting the educational needs of at-risk students. The grant provided assistance to 5-7 students facing financial challenges, helping them fulfill their financial obligations for the current school year and enabling them to confidently enroll in the 2024-25 academic year. The grant award was $10,000.
The Mazza Family Foundation Over the past nine years, the Mazza Foundation has awarded a yearly grant, which has provided $2,000 scholarships to our young women. The Mazza Scholars are chosen during their freshman year, and the scholarship continues to support them throughout their four years at McAuley. We are deeply grateful to the Mazza Board of Directors for their unwavering commitment: Joseph Rubinelli, Joan Lavezzorio Schniedwind, Mary Jane Rubinelli, and Nicholas Lavezzorio. The grant award was $10,000.
The Owens Foundation Since the late 1990s, the Owens Foundation has been dedicated to supporting students from Chicago’s inner city through scholarships. Several women from the Owens family are McAuley alumnae, including Julie ‘82, Sharon ‘88, and Katie ‘93. The foundation’s continued support is deeply appreciated and has a meaningful impact on families facing financial challenges. For Fiscal Year 2024, the Owens Foundation grant aided five deserving students with $1,500 scholarships. The grant award was $7,500.
The W.P. & H.B. White Foundation The White Foundation has been a valued partner of Mother McAuley for over 20 years, providing crucial financial support to at-risk students, primarily from Chicago’s inner city and the south suburbs. Steve White, president of the White Foundation, is deeply committed to the academic success of the scholarship recipients. For Fiscal Year 2024, the foundation grant aided eight students with $2,000 scholarships. The grant award was $16,000.
PROGRAM ASSISTANCE
The Helen Brach Foundation The Brach Board of Directors and Foundation President Matthew Simon has been a faithful partner for many years and has affirmed the value of ministry to the young women of Chicago by assisting us with numerous programs. This year’s support expanded our technology program by initiating the study of videography, empowering our students to create videos to market our school’s achievements and culture. The grant award was $25,000.
Helen M. Harrison Foundation For over six years, the Helen M. Harrison Foundation has been a proud supporter of the Professional ABC’s: Advice Beyond the Classroom program. This extracurricular initiative is dedicated to teaching essential professional skills, such as networking, interviewing, goal setting, time management, financial literacy, and learning from failure, both individually and in team settings. The program culminates each year in a presentation competition with other participating schools. The grant award was $10,000.
Mercy Fund for Ministry Grant Program This dedicated and long-time supporter of Mercy Education has awarded a generous grant to enhance our current ministry resources. The funding enables our students to build on the strong foundation of their McAuley Mercy education, empowering them to become prophetic witnesses who advocate for a more just and inclusive world. In particular, improvements within the Theology and Ministry Department have focused on strengthening the integration of spirituality and service. The grant award was $40,000.
The Scholl Foundation We are deeply thankful for The Scholl Foundation’s continued support of Mercy Education. This year, their generous grant was designated for the development of our future Green STEM lab. The aim of this project is to enhance STEM opportunities for young women by creating an innovative space featuring multiple work areas designed for hands-on activities, in-depth research, experimentation, and cross-disciplinary problem-solving. The grant award was $20,000.

Mercy Day of Giving 2023
We held our annual Mercy Day of Giving on September 22, 2023, with a goal of raising $150,000 from 600+ donors in support of our McAuley Fund. We knew the McAuley community was unafraid of a challenge; we exceeded both goals and raised $156,540 from 735 donors! This support strengthens our mission and shows all current and future Mighty Macs that there is a strong community who believes in their potential.

Financial stability is a core tenet of our decision-making at Mother McAuley to ensure that appropriate fund balances are maintained to provide the Lifetime Advantage of a Mercy education. Working closely with our Board of Trustees, some of the significant elements of Mother McAuley’s financial status include:
• Annual review of operational costs as part of a comprehensive budgeting process.
• Future planning to meet our commitment to the policy of funding deprecation for the future replacement of assets through the established Funded Depreciation Account.
• Designation and restriction of certain net assets for long-term needs.
• Annual financial report audit by an independent auditing firm.
• Maintaining donor investments in order to offset the continued increases in operational costs, scholarships, and financial aid.
Fore the Macs: Playing it Forward Golf Outing 2023
On August 24, 2023, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff and friends braved an intense heatwave to tee our Mighty Macs up for success at our 2023 golf outing. The event raises money for the Tradition of Excellence Scholarship and tuition assistance, helping ensure McAuley is affordable for all students who dream of becoming Mighty Macs.
During the Dinner Par-tee, the annual Caring Heart Award was presented. This award pays tribute to alumna Caroline Griffin ‘12, a member of the McAuley golf team who passed away as a result of a congenital heart disease. Recipients of the Caring Heart Award demonstrate her courage and perseverance in the face of hardship.
The 2023 recipients, Lemolade L2L (Lemons to Lemolade) and its founders, Morgan Ingersoll Winters ‘03 and Nikki Harrington, were recognized for championing causes that share their clothing program’s values and mission of celebrating the everyday sweetness of life. Through the L2L program, they have raised more than $55,000 for incredible organizations and community members who are making the world a better place.

Celebration 2024
Celebration was held on February 1, 2024, at the University Club of Chicago. It was a full circle moment being right around the corner from the first Mercy school chartered in Chicago. What a fantastic night to rejoice in the legacy of our foundress, Catherine McAuley!
We were blessed to celebrate our esteemed honorees Sister Marion Johnson, RSM (Life Trustee) and Bridget Gainer ‘86, Nora Gainer ‘88, Maureen Gainer Reilly ‘93, Mary Gainer, MD ‘96, and Sheila Gainer ‘99 (Catherine McAuley Leadership Award Recipients) for their continued dedication to Mother McAuley and for showing compassion, leadership in the Church and society, and the ability to inspire others to service and care for others.

Throughout its history, Mother McAuley has honored its founding commitment to providing a liberal arts, college-preparatory Catholic education – steeped in the Mercy tradition – to young women, regardless of financial ability to pay full tuition. Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, thanks to the generosity of donors, 53 percent of students received financial assistance. We are grateful to the alumnae, parents and friends who have generously established or contributed to endowed and annual scholarship funds, ensuring that all young women benefit from the Lifetime Advantage of a McAuley education.
