Advice from a pair of sorta-seniors Bridget Gallagher and Janey Hynes
First and foremost, welcome to the class of 2024! You made it to McAuley, hopefully, in one piece. I know you may be having mixed emotions—scared, excited, both or anything in between. Back in the day, we too, were fresh-face freshmen, who were thrown into the McAuley community. Now that we’re a couple of years older, and a couple of years wiser, here is some advice for you all to survive your first year. Our biggest piece of advice would be to try EVERYTHING you want and can. As a freshman, the world is your oyster, (even if you are allergic to shellfish) and you have so much time to try new things. Clubs, sports, art, theater and even classes. Do not be afraid to try something new because you will thank yourself in years to come. And who knows? Maybe your new best friend is waiting in that club you are unsure about joining, or that sport that you mom is really suggesting that you ‘at least try.’ If you ever need help, ask! Advocating on behalf of yourself plays a huge role in success. We guarantee you your teacher will be more than happy to help you with that burdensome homework. It may be hard going from being a big-dog in eighth grade to the bottom of the food chain, but it’s important to remember that we were all freshmen at some point in time. Sometimes, you have to close a door to open a window. Enjoy this year and the years to come as much as you can because your time at McAuley will go by fast, but the memories that you make here will stay with you forever. graphic by Sydney Banks and Moria Cosme
Snack Time Brisa Torres, Aine Mcintire, Colleen Rooney
Brisa: Considering the fact that I live off of snacks, I’m the best candidate for this review. No offense to my co-authors, but I am extremely knowledgeable in this department. I feel like I should start off on a positive note before I start complaining, so let me tell you about my holy grail snack. Chia Squeeze by Mamma Chia in the flavor Blackberry Bliss. This snack has it all—amazing taste, health benefits, and it keeps you full. It’s not too sweet but it is still flavorful, and the combination of blackberries and chia creates the perfect texture. This snack is definitely a 10/10. Okay now it’s time to complain, this snack and I will never cross paths again, freeze-dried mango. I love mango, it is one of my favorite fruits, but this simply was not it. The texture was jerky-like and Target somehow managed to make mango not taste like mango and, instead taste like laundry detergent. I will not be eating this again, I give it a 1/10. Aine: THIS IS FIRE! Trail mix is such an underrated snack. My favorite trail mix is the Classic Trail Mix. It
contains a variety of nuts, dried raisins, and M&M’S. Walnuts and almonds provide an abundance of health benefits like improved memory and increased attention span, according to healthline.com. The dried raisins provide nutrients and fiber to your diet, and the M&M’S add the perfect amount of sweetness. Trail mix is easy to pack and eat during class breaks throughout the day. I rate this snack a 10/10. Another healthy and delicious snack is freeze-dried strawberries. Unlike regular strawberries, which are difficult to pack without becoming soggy and messy, the freeze-dried style removes the water

Necessities for Hybrid Learning Anna Fagan and Jo Gomez
The first year of high school can take some getting used to. One thing that can make freshman year easier is having all the proper necessities for school. Since lockers aren’t allowed yet, here is a list of essentials to keep in mind while at school and at home:
Keep a snack and water nearby to stay hydrated and satisfied on Google Meets Use headphones at home to help drown out background noise Bring your fully charged iPad and charger with you to school, so you’re prepared for anything Have the all apps and books downloaded and ready to go for your classes Make sure your at-home workspace is free from distractions Don’t forget to smeyes! (smile with your eyes) Have a designated spot for your ID, so you never forget it. You don’t want to have to pay a dollar for a temporary ID! Bring personal tissues, hand sanitizer and an extra mask just in case Buy a fun new pencil case and fill it with supplies so you never have to worry about borrowing someone else’s (and you can get compliments on your cute new merch) Don’t forget, it’s still high school! Try to meet new people and have fun!
but maintains nutrients and sweet flavor. These are unquestionably a 10/10. Colleen: To finish out this review, I would like to begin by clarifying that I am a notoriously picky eater. The unfortunate fact that I am gluten-free makes it that much more difficult to find delicious and healthy snacks. Luckily, the Zone Perfect Gluten-Free Oatmeal Chocolate Chunk granola bar came in clutch. These bars are a treat! Packing a whopping 10g of protein and only 8g of fat, it is the perfect in-school snack. I give it a 9/10 with a point deduction only for the price. I was not as lucky with this other snack, seaweed. If you enjoy drinking ocean water or smelling the fish section at the grocery store, seaweed is for you. Unfortunately for me, I do not fit into that category. This crystalized and salted version of the soggy sea plant tasted no better than it would have if had come straight out of the water. The texture was similar to that of a potato chip, which was one of its only redeeming qualities. While relatively healthy, it genuinely made me gag. I give it a 1/10.
