It is nearly impossible to escape the strong grip that advertisements and commercials hold on society. They appear when you turn on the television to watch the news; you are bombarded with anything from toothbrush ads to car ads. Billboards selling you insurance populate the roads you drive on and follow you all the way to your destination. There is always an advertisement urging us to buy something. American society has become so accustomed to these advertisements selling us things that we often are not asking to buy. Social media only amplifies the issue of an excess of advertisements, and the funds wrapped up in some advertisements is appalling. With television watching platforms, such as Netflix and Hulu, the ad-free watching experience has become favored amongst a majority of the population. However, commercials still permeate through bingewatching platforms. The Super Bowl commercials that everyone either loves or hates are a prime example of high cost advertisements that are intended to reach the television screens of every family in the country. The cost of Super Bowl advertisements is a subject not frequently addressed. Instead, people tend to focus on
how funny or entertaining the commercials are. However, when it comes down to it, the prices of these ads are shocking. Some Super Bowl ads for 2022 ranked at over $6.5
million, according to Nielsen Media Research. The amount of money being poured into advertising and commercials is significantly rising, and this change in advertising calls for a change in consumer habits. Advertisements can often maintain a negative underlying message, and it is important to be cognizant of how we perceive advertisements. One specific category of advertising that can negatively impact consumers’ perceptions
is in the beauty industry. Oftentimes, beauty product advertisements perpetuate society’s harmful stereotypes about beauty, and a severe underrepresentation of every individual’s beauty is evidenced. As some brands work toward being more real and inclusive in their advertising, many brands are not, and this issue regarding commercials and advertising needs to be addressed. Issues such as these feed into a bigger issue of this constant pressure for consumers to buy, buy, buy. Consumers are told the product will be one thing, and after they buy it, the product is completely different. We just accept this as a society because right now, that is “just the way it is.” Harmful messages through advertisements and the amount of money being poured into advertisements should not just be accepted and ignored. This doesn’t have to be the way it is. Society’s priorities should align with real world issues that affect entire populations rather than constantly forcing products into the hands of consumers everywhere. The constant growth of advertisements is not expected to be on the decline anytime soon, so it is important for society to gradually shift its priorities from buy, buy, buy to why, why, why?

An active shooter situation is something you never want to find yourself in; however, you always want to be prepared in case of an emergency.
Although school shootings are a rare occurrence, they do still happen. In the state of Illinois, it is mandatory for schools to enforce a lockdown drill. This allows faculty, staff and students to have a plan in case something ever did occur.
“We do these drills for the students and faculty’s own safety. You don’t want to be on the news for a tragedy we could have had a plan for,” security guard Officer Dan said.
After winter break, the faculty underwent training with police officers to better prepare for a possible lockdown. During this training, they took note of things they had to change in the school, as well as what they could add to increase the safety. They have added cards that indicate if everyone in that room is okay or if they require medical assistance. Among these additions, there are new locks on doors that did not have them before and only one open entrance into the school in Circle Drive.
“The lockdown cards are a form of communication. We put a new security desk down by the athletics to help monitor evening security,” Mrs. Gardner said.
Mia Miceli
If you find yourself in a lockdown situation, there are 3 things you can do: you can run, hide or fight. You only run if you know for certain the intruder is far enough away that you can make it out. If the intruder is too close, lock your door, barricade yourself in the room and hide. If the attacker is somehow able to get into your room, grab anything to throw at them. Water bottles, books, scissors and anything else big and heavy could be used as a weapon.
To fill in the students on what was going on, level deans met with theology classes to give them a run down of what would happen during a lockdown, as well as answer any questions that they may have.
“We think it’s important for our students to be aware of what the most up to date practices are in the chance there is a hard lockdown or active shooter,” Mrs. Gardner said “We’re trying to protect you guys from people on the outside trying to get in. That’s the most important thing,” Officer Dan said.
Teachers are not trying to scare us; they just want to make sure that we are safe. If you have any questions, concerns or feeling like something needs to be changed, you can talk to your level dean or Mrs. Gardner.

You will surely soar through this edition of the Inscape when you learn all there is to know about this Inscape edition’s student spotlight, Maura McCluskey. McCluskey is a current senior at McAuley who has quite the impressive hobby: she flies planes! She became interested in flying planes after doing some research at the age of 16 and gained her private pilot certificate when she turned 17.
“I knew flying was something I wanted to try at least once and I fell in love with it,” said McCluskey. She learned about the flying world from her grandpa, who has had a long piloting career, but she recommends watching YouTube videos if interested. “I started flying after I learned how to drive, so I conquered the ground and then took on the sky,” explained McCluskey. “I can go anywhere I want in America, as long as my wallet can keep up!”
As a private pilot, she is able to fly wherever her plane will take her, and she is able to fly on her own, which is one of the most exciting things about flying for Maura. “I love to stop at different airports to just buzz around,” voiced McCluskey. “Lewis University put up an airport tower recently, so I had to go check it out and say hi to the people in the tower.” As incredible as this sounds, training
to get your pilot’s license is not as simple. It takes a lot of hard work not only in the air, but lots of consistent energy on the ground too.
“Much like learning the rules of the road, you have to learn the rules of the sky as well, and there are a lot of them,” explained McCluskey. “I had to learn aeronautical/ flight science and theory, flight maneuvers like how to land, steep turns, and stalls, how to plan my flights, what to do in every emergency imaginable and so much more.” However, that hard work sure paid off as Maura now gets to fly the most amazing aircrafts to the most spectacular places.
“The coolest place I got to fly over was Lake Michigan at night,” expressed McCluskey. “It is a surreal view because any body of water at night is a pitch-black void. With Lake Michigan being so big, it looks like there’s a black wall in front of you. I think it’s the coolest thing ever.” These amazing experiences have contributed to Maura’s interest in pursuing a future in relation to flying aircrafts. “Becoming an airline pilot is my dream,” expressed McCluskey. “I want to go commercial, which is flying while carrying passengers, but I’m ready for whatever opportunities come my way.”

Splash yes? Or splash no?
Splash Mountain, a Disney World staple, had one final run Jan. 20, before closing for good. The ride had been running since 1992. Splash Mountain was located in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park. Splash mountain was a “Song of the South” themed water ride, with a 52 ft. drop. Although a favorite amongst many Disney fans, the new theme is being welcomed. Splash Mountain will be rethemed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in late 2024.
Many regular Disney goers admitted that they thought Splash Mountain would remain in its original glory for many decades to come. The iconic ride has been featured in “Full House” and rode by countless celebrities. The ride was never supposed to be reimagined, but in 2020, a change.org petition gained 21,000 signatures shaming the racist theme. Splash mountain is themed after “Song of the South”, a Disney movie from 1946. The movie features animation with bunny Brer rabbit and a former slave named Uncle Remus. The two tell stories and help a young boy solve his problems. The character Uncle Remus caused controversy because he portrayed a former slave living contently and happily amongst his former slave owners. Many people of color in 1946 claimed the movie was not an accurate
depiction of their experience. The movie depicted plantation life as easy. This backlash caused the move to stop streaming and being sold in the 80s. This caused Disney to receive backlash from Disney World goers.
The new theme will be Tiana from Princess and the Frog, famously the first Black Disney Princess. Fans are excited about the new theme being Tiana, after the former theme delivered racist ideals. Disney Parks states, “In Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, you’ll join Princess Tiana and jazz-loving alligator Louis during Mardi Gras season as they prepare to host a one-of-a-kind celebration for the people of New Orleans.” After you drop from the same 52ft drop as Splash mountain you enter the famous Princess and the frog swamp. It will be lit up with fireflies and all the creatures from the movie. The ride will play Zydeco music, a very special and cultural blend of rhythm and blues from Louisiana.
Splash mountain was a very beloved ride by many, and as fans have stated the ride wasn’t about racism to them. Other fans have stated that they wish Tiana got a restaurant like “she would have liked”. Mostly it seems people are excited to see this new adventurous ride, and it’s colorful Mardigras theme. The ride will have a special
Chicago bans gas stoves
Before the invention of gas stoves, families relied on coal and wood to light the fire in the stoves in their home. Once gas stoves became available, they quickly grew to popularity and are now found in almost every kitchen across the country. However, electrical and manual appliances might be making a comeback after the potential ban on gas stoves in Chicago. Gas stoves have been linked to childhood asthma and numerous other cardiovascular and respiratory infections. Nitrogen dioxide is emitted from these stoves into the surrounding air. Inhaling nitrogen dioxide is typically not dangerous, but respirating elevated levels of this chemical can cause serious respiratory issues in both children and adults. The mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, began toying with the idea to ban gas stoves a few months ago following investigations that show the damage these stoves are costing. Studies have shown that the chemicals, including Nitrogen dioxide, have been linked to growths in climate change and global warming. Many other major cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles, Boston and New York City, have already begun to ban gas stoves. to promote electrical and manual appliances.
part of the Disney Mardi Gras parade, Disney stated. The theme is fresh and exciting. Tiana and her ride were long awaited and we will see them in 2024!
well received as gas stoves are an essential part of everyday life for many families through cooking as well as a source of heat. The ban is intended to promote electrical and manual appliances. The influx of respiratory illnesses along with influence from other large cities are greatly swaying the city of Chicago and to potentially ban gas stoves.

The world knows Andrew Tate as “Top G” and the ”king of misogyny.” But how, and why, were these titles created? The BritishAmerican social media personality first began his climb to fame in the kickboxing ring. Starting in 2007, the 20 year old Tate competed in 85 fights, and after 13 years, he had won four IKSA world champion titles. His celebrity status didn’t end in the ring. In 2016, Tate entered into the 17th season of the British reality show, “Big Brother.” It only took one week for Tate to be abruptly kicked off the show, as a home video was leaked of him assaulting a woman. Tate claimed the video was edited and that the two partaking in the video had been “joking around.” The scandals surrounding Tate did not stop after the release of this video, and if anything, Tate viewed this as his opportunity to continue his journey to fame and success.
What happened after his retirement from kickboxing and his expulsion from the reality show? Tate did not shy away from the social media spotlight. It is unclear when Tate started his successful “business” of webcamming, but behind the screen, Andrew and his brother, Tristan Tate, were scamming men and women left and right. From the article, “Brothers make millions using webcam girls to sell ‘sob’ stories to desperate men,” news reporter, Emer Scully, describes the idea behind the business
and tells readers: “…Tristan brazenly told the Sunday Mirror ’it’s all a big scam,’ and bragged he doesn’t feel any guilt because ’no one cares’ and ‘it’s their problem not mine.’” Not only does he specialize in scamming people, but he created an entire online university to help young men “escape the matrix.” The course cost participants a monthly fee of $49.99 to be prescribed with misogynistic self-help tips and opinions such as, “Women do certain things and men do certain things. And we live in a world now where the whole idea of the roles has been conflated to the fact where if I come along and say women are better with children and men are better at fighting, that I’m somehow sexist when it’s clearly true.”
Sadly, the sexism and misogyny does not stop at his businesses. Tate uses social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, to broadcast his harmful opinions to billions of people. In 2017, Tate decided to respond to the #MeToo movement surrounding the Harvey Weinstein scandal by tweeting, “If you put yourself in a position to be raped, you must [bear] some responsibility.” Following Tate’s relocation to Romania, he claimed that part of the reason he moved was because it was more difficult for him to be accused of sexual assault. He stated, “I’m not a rapist, but I like the idea of just being able to do what I want.”
On Dec. 29 Tate was arrested on charges of rape and human trafficking. Why was he arrested? After investigating Tate’s webcam scam as mentioned before, “The country’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism, or DIICOT, said that Tate and his brother Tristan are suspected of having recruited victims for a criminal online porn scam.” Social media has claimed that an interaction on Twitter with the climate protection activist, Greta Thunberg, is the reason Tate was found and arrested. But, officials have denied this, and apparently Tate has been under investigation since April 2022. Although it has been proven that Thunberg was not the cause for his arrest, it is a fact that Tate’s arrogance was what led to his downfall.
Deadly helicopter crash in Ukraine
Lilly Daggy
On Jan 18, a helicopter in Ukraine crashed and killed 14 people including one child and many prominent Ukrainian government officials.
The crash happened in Brovary, a town east of Kyiv. It crashed near a kindergarten and residential building, injuring 25 people on the ground and killing 14 others. Five were on the ground and nine were in the helicopter.
The crash saw the loss of Ukraine’s Interior Affairs minister, Denys Monastyrsky. This has been the highest profile death in Ukraine this year. Other officials who passed away include Yevhen Yenin, the first deputy minister and Yuriy Lubkovych, the state secretary. Three other officials also passed away, along with the three crew members of the helicopter.
Monastyrsky and the other officials were on their way to meet with the head of police, Volodymyr Tymoshko. After Monastyrsky’s death, the Ukrainian police chief, Ihor Klymenko was appointed as the provisional Interior Affairs minister. It was said that operations in the interior ministry would continue.
Their deaths are both shocking and sning. Many have expressed their condolences to their families, including President, Joe Biden, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and many other Ukrainian government offivals. Zelenskyy addressed the people, saying, “This has been a dreadful day which we must get through and must endure. And we will endure it.” He also thanked the people who worked to keep children out of harm’s way, and he even mentioned some by name.
It is believed that the crash was an accident. Zelenskyy ordered an investigation on it, and no accusatory statements have been made. Still, investigators aren’t yet sure of the cause of the crash, but it’s suspected that there were either flight violations or technical malfunctions. It was also foggy and cloudy on the day of the crash, and helicopters must fly low when they hold officials, so this may have contributed to the crash because it would have been very difficult to see.
Many witnesses said that as the helicopter was coming down, it was avoiding many high rises and packed blocks. It then crashed over a kindergarten, where many were scrambling to get themselves and
and others to safety. Hlib, a witness at the crash stated, “We took the children and passed them over the fence, away from the nursery as it was on fire, especially the second floor.” Many employees at the nursery, parents and other volunteers helped people escape the crash and the fire it had caused at the nursery. This crash is tragic and many good people have been lost. Hopefully with time, we can get more details on everything that happened, and the families of the crash victims receive some closure.

There is always a face behind every aspect of McAuley. Though we may not realize the amount of effort that goes into producing such a wonderful environment, there are people that work extremely hard to support the students of McAuley. The staff that work to prepare the most delicious meals to fuel the students at McAuley put huge amounts of effort into the food they are presenting. As an introduction, we want the students of McAuley to get a better understanding and sense of image behind the faces that cook their meals every day. “I have always had a passion for cooking and having the opportunity to do it everyday with people that surround me with positive energy, the students and my co-workers, makes me love what I do,” says Lupita Rodriguez.
Lupita: Lupita Rodriguez is a Hispanic woman working in the cafeteria for the students of McAuley. She has been living in America for 23 years, working at a buffet for 8 years and McAuley for the past 7 years. Coming to McAuley, she was given very flexible–but enjoyable–hours, and enjoys the environment the McAuley girls offer. Rodriguez works in meal prep for not only the cafeteria, but the Kitty Mac Cafe as well. She prepares ingredients for items such as soup and cookies, which include dicing fresh vegetables and hand-making the dough and batter used in our famous McAuley cookies. If you ever need to find her, Rodriguez is always welcoming students with a friendly smile as they pay for their delectable, fresh meals.

Carmen: MariCarmen Gonzalez has been at McAuley for 21 years. She travels from 18th and Pilsen, taking 3 buses to school everyday in order to get there by 8 am when she starts. Gonzalez originally worked on young girls’ quinceañera dresses before injuring her vision and taking some time off to care for her children. She has been married for 57 years with 3 children and 2 grandchildren. After hearing about a possible job opportunity as McAuley, she decided to apply. Spoiler alert! She got the job and has been a face of McAuley for 23 years. Gonzalez is commonly known as “the grandma” in the cafeteria setting, but she does not see that as a negative comment. “I consider being called ‘the grandma’ a caring nickname because I am a grandmother myself and admire the opportunity to be a caring example to my grandchildren,” said Gonzalez. One inspiring thing we learned from Carmen–and something that she lives by–is the saying that with the amount of effort and hardwork you put into the world, that same amount of work will come back to you.
Virginia: Virginia Fernandez has been working at McAuley for 23 years, so I guess you could say she likes the McAuley community. Not only is the schedule very convenient and flexible for her, but her coworkers and students she interacts with on a day-to-day basis inspire her passion and love for her job. Fernandez has a very light, funny personality and energy, which makes her an extremely engaging person to talk to. She decided to tell us a story about her dog, Chique, and the day he sent her on a goose chase around her neighborhood looking for him. “I had been searching for him for four hours, when I saw him sitting on a neighbor’s porch,” explained Fernandez. “I said ‘Oh! That’s my dog! Chique, get over here!’” She is an extremely entertaining and compassionate worker, who I hope every student has the opportunity to talk to.

Alexis: Alexis Aranda is a 19 year old woman, who you may commonly see with a welcoming smile in the Kitty Mac Cafe. She has an independent spirit and works hard for what she desires for herself. She originally worked at Dunkin’ Donuts, which was a very different setting in comparison to McAuley; however, she learned many of the skills she enacts into her job at McAuley from working at Dunkin. Aranda is an extremely kindhearted, compassionate person who admires the community she works within. “I feel like we are all a family who support each other and help each other get things done,” expressed Aranda.
extremadamente amable y compasiva que admira la comunidad en la que trabaja. “Siento que todos somos una familia que se apoya mutuamente y se ayuda mutuamente a hacer las cosas”, dice Aranda.
Carolina: Carolina Zarate originally worked in a bakery preparing fresh pasteur items to sell. Working in this environment prepared her for the skills and work life required at McAuley. She heard of a job opening at McAuley and immediately grasped the opportunity to work in such a positive environment. Living only a quick seven minutes from McAuley was not the only positive aspect Zarate considered when starting at McAuley. “Applying and taking the job at McAuley was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself,” said Zarate. The job is not only convenient to her schedule, but she is also working in what she considers a very loving environment with very caring and considerate girls.
Janet: Janet Gavina is a newer member of the McAuley community, only starting here this past October. She is originally from Michoacán, Mexico, but since moving to Chicago, she recognizes the change and differences of scenery. However, she is so grateful for the position to work in such a positive environment. Though she did not work in Mexico, when Gavina heard about a job opening at McAuley, she decided to take the opportunity. She admires the good vibes McAuley produces into their environment and believes working here inspires her ability to become a better person. “It’s like a family I was blessed with and created, without being born into it,” said Gavina. “I made this family on my own.”
Santiago: Santiago Plata, starting only a short three weeks ago, has been a major positive change for the environment at McAuley. He works as a behind-the-scenes face that you might see making the mouthwatering chicken tenders and fries we all eat almost everyday. Plata was born in Columbia and traveled to America this past March. As he adjusted from Columbia to America, he had to get used to many differences and challenges that came his way. However, Plata can’t find anything to complain about in his change in scenery–apart from the not-so-natural cold weather. He is very blessed to be working in a community where he can do something he is passionate about, which is cooking. Plata loves the positive energy McAuley exudes as a community and work setting.

Lisette:
Hot takes: SUB DUB
Lisette Corral, Ella Martin and Keira Jarrett
Since August 28, 1965, Subway has been the best sandwich one could ever eat. I will take Subway over any other sandwich shop because it is literally the OG. I love going in because, of course, the service is fast, but the colors are also so aesthetic inside. I have had times where my friends and I stood at Subway and ate; it was very pleasing. It is just so appealing to the eye and always satisfies my taste buds.
I have eaten the same thing, and it never gets old. My following order is the Italian footlong toasted with ham, no cheese, lettuce, cucumber, pickle and olive oil. I know it’s a weird combo, but it tastes so good with hot chips and vitamin water. This just literally does everything! I love the toasted flavor of the sandwich and putting the hot chips in the sandwich.. The flavor is immaculate. Also, I am paying for a foot long that is 12 inches when I would be getting a smaller size for the same price at Potbelly and Jimmy Johns..
Ella: Who wouldn’t like to enjoy a warm, delectable sandwich after a hard day of work and responsibilities?
Subway and Jimmy John’s offer cold sandwiches that you can easily whip up at home for free, however, Potbelly offers toasty, hot sandwiches to warm up any person’s day. Every time I visit, I enjoy their delicious BLTA, made up of bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and my personal favorite topping, pickles, but they have so many other tasty options. They have numerous other menu options beside sandwiches such as shakes, salads, soups and even a breakfast option. Potbelly can be eaten whenever you want, with a meal for any type of day and mood, wherever you want, with easily carried sandwich bags that fit your meal just perfectly, and however you want, with over 18 pre-made sandwich choices as well as custom sandwiches.
My favorite part about Potbelly, besides the food, is the homely feeling you get when you walk in the restaurant. The atmosphere gives off a cozy, antique feeling, which provides a comforting ambience for your meal.
Keira:
Jimmy John’s is the best sandwich establishment–hands down. First off, when you walk into Jimmy Johns, the smell of the freshly baked bread overwhelms your senses. And, even if you choose the delivery option, they live up to their slogan of being ‘freaky fast,’ so the bread is still fresh when it gets to you.
I like a variety of sandwiches from the fine establishment, but personally, I love the roast beef sandwich with lettuce, mayo and provolone cheese. Not only are there sandwiches, but they have their own brand of chips. The crunch is life-changing. You’ll never want to eat another brand of chips after you try Jimmy Chips. My usual order consists of the barbecue flavored chips. They’re amazing.
Not only do they have a wide variety of sandwiches and chips, but their pop selection is outstanding. I personally love their Dr. Pepper. The carbonation is the perfect amount. And to top it all off, the cookies are a must-have. The chocolate chip cookie is the perfect sweet treat after your delicious sandwich. If you don’t already agree with me, go to your local Jimmy John’s, and you’ll see what all the hype is about.
When we are joking or angry, we sometimes say stuff we don’t mean. We can make a harsh joke that might not be funny. Something that has bothered me very much is the use of depression and anxiety thrown around. For example, someone might be joking and say, “that just made me depressed.”
I have had anxiety for so long as I can remember, and for me, when people throw it around, it makes me upset because I feel like it belittles it. People throw around depression and it just becomes something so normalized. Don’t get me wrong, I am a part of the problem. I would do it and not even notice I am doing it. I have grown to realize that words can hurt someone and they may not even realize it.
This is not with just anxiety and depression. Sometimes we make jokes that can be so invalidating for the other person. I think it comes down to our generation; our generation is very different and likes dark humor. How many times do we say a mean comment to our friend and begin laughing, even if it’s such a terrible thing? I’m not trying to tell people not to make jokes because hey, I do the same. I just want people to realize that sometimes words can really affect someone.. I would know,
Since I was in sixth grade, I have gone to therapy. I never liked talking about it because people thought it meant I was crazy and needed help. As I grew older, I grew an appreciation for therapy and being able to talk and get a different view of things. Recently, I had a situation where someone did say I was crazy, but I know that’s not true thanks to going to therapy. I am very open to the idea of therapy and am a huge advocate because I want people to know it’s such a good thing. It has made me realize to be intentional with what I say and how I act. It has helped me to be open to other perspectives and understand that other people may not express they’re bothered, but deep down, they will be thinking about what they hear--even if it’s ‘just a joke’--all day.

New vaccine could treat aggressive breast cancer
An experimental vaccine meant to fight off breast cancer, made by the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, successfully generated a strong immune response to a tumor protein. This finding suggests that this vaccine might be able to fight off aggressive forms of breast cancer. “The findings are promising enough that the vaccine will now be evaluated in a larger, randomized clinical trial,” Dr. Mary L. Disis, director of the Cancer Vaccine Institute said.
The phase 1 trial was designed to test the safety of a vaccine that targets the protein HER2. HER2 is in as many as 30% of breast cancers. HER2 cancers are more aggressive and are likely to reappear even after chemotherapy.
The overproduction of HER2 can cause an immune reaction that can be beneficial. Disis and her colleagues created a DNA vaccine to prompt that same response.
When the vaccine is injected, the DNA is obtained by the cells, which then begins to produce the protein encoded in the vaccine’s DNA. Cells will give the protein to the immune system which is more likely to generate a stronger cytotoxic immune response.

Sixty-six women who had metastatic cancer were brought in for this study. Every woman completed a standard course of therapy and either had complete remission or had only a tumor left in their bone.
The patients were followed for three to 13 years. The length of the follow up was long due to the fact that HER2 is found on many other cell types. The follow up was used to ensure the vaccination did not trigger an autoimmune response against other healthy tissues containing HER2 over time.
“The results showed that the vaccine was very safe. In fact, the most common side effects that we saw in about half the patients were very similar to what you see with COVID vaccines: redness and swelling at the injection site and maybe some fever, chills, and flulike symptoms,” Disis said. The vaccine had no severe side effects with strong immune response within patients.
“We’ve now followed these women for ten years and 80% of them are still alive,” Disis said. Researchers noted that the patients have done significantly better than patients with similar stages of breast cancer.
“I have high hopes that we’re close to having a vaccine that can effectively treat patients with breast cancer,” Disis said.
3D printed homes
3D printed keychains and smaller designs are impressive and are even created within the walls of B wing, but an entire sustainable house built from a 3D printer was unheard of… until the emergence of BioHome3D. The idea of homes being created by large 3D printers is developing, and so are the homes that have been created so far. One specific 3D home, the BioHome3D was not only formed on the largest polymer 3D printer in the world, but it is also sustainable and does not harm the environment.
The construction of 3D houses specifically with eco-friendly materials is taking place in Maine. A heavily wooded area, Maine has a surplus of trees and wood, and these materials serve as the catalyst for the interesting new construction of houses.
“There’s a lot of that waste material now that is generated yearly in our state and in the region,” Habib Dagher, the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center’s executive director told Architectural Digest. “We have over a million tons per year of waste wood residues that are accessible to us [and] that can create a lot of homes,” Bridget Reed Morawski wrote in Architectural Digest.
As if the BioHome3D using more sustainable materials was not impressive enough, the house is also recyclable. Therefore, instead of the rubble of knocked down buildings
demonstrating waste, the destruction of these 3D homes will only lead to the rebuilding of other 3D homes. In order for this to occur, houses have to endure certain tests to ensure their recycling capabilities.
“The process is repeated five times to evaluate five recycling opportunities that may cover 500 to 1000 years of reuse,” Morawski wrote in Architectural Digest.
The benefits of these homes are endless, and the pros of sustainable 3D homes include the following: a reduction in the cost of materials, more ethical materials being used and a decrease in labor as the polymer 3D printer almost entirely creates the homes. In addition to the better, sustainable 3D homes, there are also entire groups of 3D houses being built, such as in a community in Austin, Texas.
“Just outside Austin, Texas, massive machines are squeezing out 100 three-and four-bedroom homes, in the first major housing development to be 3D-printed on site,” Diana Olick wrote in an article for CNBC.
Even though the costs of these 3D-printed houses that are being built in “bulk” are higher now and are not using sustainable materials, these homes are planned to be more inexpensive and more affordable when compared to similarly sized homes on the market in the future. 3D homes as a whole are still in the early development stages, but the promise of sustainably built homes,
specifically the BioHome3D in Maine, can benefit the environment. These homes can also work towards ameliorating the skyrocketing prices that homebuyers face when searching for a new house. Additionally, a reduction in the rate of homelessness is possible, and 3D homes can eventually help the environment and humanity.

LIV is Roman numeral 54. 54 is how many holes each golf tournament has for the LIV Golf league. It is also what you would shoot if you birdied every hole on a par 72 course, which is considered a perfect round of golf.
The idea of LIV Golf league is to give each golfer a contract. The Professional Golfers’ Association of America’s tour (PGA Tour) gives golfers money based on performance. The golfers pay for the travel expenses and can sometimes end up making no money from the tournaments, losing money in the end. LIV golf strives to ensure that the golfers, especially new athletes, don’t lose money playing in tournaments.
Many PGA golfers switched to LIV golf because of how much money they were offered. Phil Mickelson signed a $200 million contract, Dustin Johnson signed a $35.6 million contract, Bryson DeChambeau signed a $125 million contract and Bubba Watson signed a $50 million contract. Tiger Woods was offered a $700-800 million contract, but he turned it down.
Tiger Woods turned the offer down because LIV Golf is funded by the Saudi Arabian government. He doesn’t agree with their policies and position on human rights or the fact that they have links to 9/11. Many families who lost people in the 9/11 attacks have protested outside of LIV tournaments.
“We know they killed (reporter Jamal) Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay,” Mickelson said. “Knowing all of this, why would I even consider this? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates. They’ve been able to get by with manipulative, coercive, strong-arm tactics because we, the players, had no recourse… and the Saudi money has finally given us that leverage. I’m not sure I even want (the Saudi league) to succeed, but just the idea of it is allowing us to get things done with the Tour.”
Many professional golfers want nothing to do with LIV because it is believed to be a form of sportswashing, which is when a large corporation, organization or government hosts a sporting event, sponsors a team or makes a new sports league to cover something up. In this case Saudi Arabia would be using sportswashing to distract the public from their human rights crisis. Golfers don’t want to distract the public from what Saudi Arabia is doing.
The PGA has now banned LIV golfers and are trying to sue them in an effort to force evidence discovery in ongoing legal battles. In response, LIV Golf is currently trying to sue the PGA. Most believe that LIV golf doesn’t live up to its “perfect” name.
Bear Down, Arlington Bears

Big changes could be coming for Chicago football fans and potentially the entire state of Illinois. For almost 50 years the Chicago Bears have been trying to leave their home stadium: the historic Soldier Field. In the next coming years they may finally achieve their goal by moving to a brand new stadium in the northwest suburb of Arlington Heights.
In September 2021, the Bears signed a purchase agreement for Arlington International Racecourse. This new location could offer the team more revenue, as Soldier Field is the smallest and oldest stadium in the National Football League (NFL). However, there are two hiccups in their plan. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is determined to keep the Bears where they are and their lease with the Chicago Park District, and Soldier Field is not up until 2033. Before the Bears even signed the purchase agreement in Arlington, Lightfoot proposed three different plans to increase the seating from 61,500 to 70,000 and make the stadium appropriate for all seasons. Despite all of these plans, the new CEO, Kevin Warren, recently made it very clear that he is ready to move the Bears out of the city.

As a woman in a male dominant sport, it can be hard to be taken seriously. You may be seen as weak, or not competitive just because of your gender. When Maggie Zuber 10 decided to wrestle, she knew she would face some challenges.
Zuber started wrestling after the pandemic. Her club, Beat the streets Chicago, is where she currently trains.
“It is a non profit organization,” Zuber said, “It’s a really good place for anyone interested in wrestling to go to.”
Zuber will compete for McAuley during sectionals and hopefully during the State competition. She is setting an example for all of us, not just in the wrestling ring.
“Competing in male dominated sport is not easy, you feel like you have to prove yourself every practice, but it also makes you work even harder.” Zuber said. “It brings women together and closer to overpower the stereotype that women can’t do this.”
Currently Zuber is the only wrestler at McAuley, but she wants others to join her in creating a team.
In preparing for a wrestling match, it is important to be in a good headspace.
“I usually listen to music and jump around to get myself focused and hyped for the match,” Zuber said.
“This announcement from the Bears comes in the midst of negotiations for improvements at Soldier Field,” Lightfoot said. “This is clearly a negotiating tactic that the Bears have used before.”
While the Chicago government is fighting hard to keep the Bears in Chicago, the fans have shown some excitement for a change. More efficient concessions, more parking and a warmer stadium are only a few reasons the fans are hoping for the move. The biggest reason, however, might be the increase in seating, making games more accessible.
“I’ve been to multiple stadiums in the NFL and Soldier Field does not compete with any of them,” Bears season ticket holder Neal Shah of Wheaton said. “On game days, the television crews show an aerial view of the stadium, which is beautiful, but the logistics are terrible.”
There are many rumors from both sides including that the Bears are planning to break the lease contract with Soldier Field in 2025 or that Lightfoot will try to strip them of the Chicago title and try to bring another NFL team to the city. Whether the rumors are true or not, we will just have to see what happens with the Chicago Bears.
When asked about pursuing wrestling long-term, Zuber said, “My goal is to wrestle in college and hopefully get a scholarship.”
Although she may face struggles, Zuber is determined to power through these obstacles to achieve her goals.

Eileen McInerny 12 has a unique passion for art. McInerny channels deep emotion into every piece and works art into her daily life. She is a wellrounded artist but tends to focus on realism and abstract painting.“I’m the type of artist that splurges art onto a canvas when I get overwhelmed with emotions,” said McInerny when asked how she would describe herself as an artist. She has had lots of time to experiment and find herself as an artist considering she started art classes when she was in fourth grade. Starting so young has allowed her to find passion in art and develop into an advanced artist. At McAuley, she has become a leader as president of National Art Honor Society.“I drew a train for a social studies project, and that’s when my mom realized I was somewhat talented. From there I attended classes at Beverly Arts Center and drew all the time,” she explained. While McInerny has taken numerous art classes at McAuley, they are not just electives to her. She hopes to make art a lifelong passion and even a career. Her plan is to study fine arts and then pursue a degree in either clinical psychology or education. “Art is everything to me,” she said when asked what art means to her. “It’s not only the career path I’ve chosen, or the courses I’ve taken, but it’s just part of my daily life. It’s the sunrises I see after pulling all nighters; it’s the stickers that are slowly peeling off my ipad, and it’s something I love.”
SOS success

SZA’s new album “SOS” is nothing short of perfection. “SOS” was released on Dec. 9, 2022. It is the longest running number one female album of 2022. All of the songs are extremely catchy, the vocals on the album are amazing and the songs are hard not to sing along too. The songs transition seamlessly together, and the skip button felt unnecessary when listening to the album all the way through.
“SOS” is an R&B album but it also branches out to neo-soul, hip-hop, alt-pop and rock. SZA has such an amazing voice and is able to sing all of these genres very successfully. You can hear the emotion in her voice in all 23 songs. She makes her words and music extremely powerful but also very catchy. Her album is about how she feels after a breakup. She does an amazing job capturing the range of emotions that she went through with her breakup in every song.
Her first track on the album is “SOS” and it talks about how she is trying to find herself after what she’s been through, and it is a perfect overview of the album.“Kill Bill,” “Seek and Destroy” and “Low” talks about her angry and violent feelings towards her ex. In “Love Language,” “Snooze,” “Notice Me,” “Too Late” and “Nobody Gets Me” SZA talks about how she isn’t over her ex. “Blind” and “Used” references how she thrives off of her ex’s validation and how she was used in her relationship. “Gone Girl” and “Smoking on my Ex Pack” are about how she is better off without her ex and she doesn’t need his validation anymore. “Ghost in the Machine,” “F2F,” “Special” and “Far” are about how she has gained insecurities from previous relationships. “Shirt” and “Open
Arms” talk about the positive moments in her relationship that she will miss.“I Hate U” is about how she hates her ex for how he treated her. “Good Days” and “Conceited” highlights her new confidence and security with herself. Her last track “Forgiveless” sums up the album perfectly. She talks about her relationship and how she can maybe forgive her ex but will never forget what he’s done to her.
“SOS” shows us how SZA has grown to be more self-assured. SOS dissects her failed relationships. Although her past relationship albums also dissected her failed relationships, they focused on her insecurities from those relationships rather than how she has changed because of the relationships. Although “SOS” still does show some of her insecurities on a couple songs, her album is a reflection of how she has grown from her past relationships and how she has found more self-confidence. Her album shows us how powerful and strong she is, and she encourages us to find our own power and strength. This album shows us how SZA is so mature.

On Mar. 12, 2023, hopeful nominees will be flooding to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California in hopes of taking home one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry: an Academy Award. More affectionately known as the Oscars, the Academy Awards is a prestigious award show honoring incredible cinematography from the previous year.
While awards such as Best Picture, Best Actor/Actress, Best Director and many more are currently being voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, many media outlets are also sharing their predictions on which nominees they believe will be taking home the award.
The award for Best Picture is awarded to the best motion picture from the previous year. This year, there are ten nominees for this award including “Elvis” and “The Whale,” but entertainment news company Variety predicts that “Top Gun: Maverick” will be taking the cake. However, the entertainment website Den of Geek is predicting “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to walk away with the trophy.
The most prestigious individual awards in the show are undoubtedly Best Actor and Best Actress. These two awards are presented to an actor and actress who remarkably portrayed a leading character in a film. The nominees for Best Actress are Cate Blanchett “Tár”, Viola Davis “The Woman King” , Ana De Armas “Blonde”, Danielle Deadwyler “Till” and Michelle Yeoh “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Screenrant.com and Variety, along with many other outlets, are choosing Blanchett to be their pick for the award for her performance in the film “Tár.” Additionally, the predictions for Best Actor also have a front runner--Austin Butler for his performance in the film “Elvis”--according to Variety and Den of Geek. His competitors include Colin Farrell “The Banshees of Inisherin”, Brendan Fraser “The Whale”, Tom Hanks “A Man Called Otto” and Bill Nighy “Living”.
The competition for these awards is extremely competitive, but there can only be one winner. Everyone is just going to have to tune into the award show to see whose predictions were correct!
And the Oscar goes to... january/february 2023 a&e 10
