Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 21st 1960. His parents were Lionel and Joyce Dahmer, who seem to have brought him up in a loving home. Dahmer seemed like a regular, happy child until a minor surgery on a double hernia which coincided with his little brother’s birth; which effected his self confidence and effected him from age 6. His father’s job opportunity meant the family moving from Iowa to Ohio, leaving Dahmer virtually friendless and disengaged. In an interview, Dahmer said he felt strange urges for violence and necrophilia around age 14, and the psychological stress of his parents divorce could be said to be the trigger for him acting on these impusive thoughts later in his life. His first victim was Steven Hicks, a hitch hiker he picked up in June 1978, just after his high school graduation. Years on, he had a drinking problem which resulted in him

dropping out of the University of Ohio, after only one term. After this, he was posted to Germany as his remarried dad insisted he joined the army. Two years later they discharged him for his abuse of alcohol. After this he would only get worse and continue his murders.

KILLINGS

While kids Dahmer’s age were busy growing up, he was collecting road kill, skinning them and keeping the bones to preserve. In June 1988, he was struggling with his sexuality, alongside the intense sadistic fantasies. It was then that he picked up Steven Hicks, his first victim. The process was usually the same, he would meet unsuspecting victims at gay bars, entice with alcohol and then drug and kill them. This was predominantly by strangulation and sometimes torture. There was always a sexual element to Dahmer’s murders. He got his name as the Milwaukee Cannibal as he would sometimes refrigerate their organs and clean there bones and collect them, much reflecting his childhood hobby.

is being a serial killer down to nature or nurture?

OPINIONS

I think both nature and nurture are causes. It depends on upbringing but not always, sometimes it can just be how they are or something in their brain that is not quite right and reacts to situations differently, without choice.

“

I’d say nurture is definitely one of the main factors. I think the way you were raised strongly effects what you think is right and wrong. Being raised in a violent household may also influence kids to become violent as they grow older, or it could do the opposite and make them a more kind and caring person. I believe some people are more predestined to be lest empathetic towards others. I think that nurture has a big impact, it can be very damaging for someone at an early age to have a bad family life.
