Fort St. John & Area Community Guide

2009

T

he Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce is a dynamic organization of local businesses that represent and serve the business interests of the community. One of the Chamber’s major projects each year is the production of the comprehensive guide to everything Fort St. John - this publication. If you’re a long time resident, or someone just interested in the area, you’ll find something new about the community. It’s the guide to the lifestyle, culture, and the workforce of Fort St. John. This magazine was produced locally in Fort St. John by Motion Media - the incredible support of the community has been overwhelm-

ing, and this magazine would not be possible without the generous support of our advertisers. We’ve done our best to make sure the information we have compiled in this magazine is accurate and as up to date as possible. The Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce and Motion Media assume no responsibility for errors or omissions. If you see something that should be adjusted for future publications, send an email to info@fsjchamber.com. We hope you enjoy this year’s publication!

Our Energetic Leaders A Chamber of Commerce in one of the busiest areas in British Columbia must be just as dynamic as the businesses it serves. The Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce does just that. Working with a strong and vigorous membership of well over 400 businesses – one of the largest per capita in the province – in Fort St. John, Taylor, Hudson’s Hope, Charlie Lake, Baldonnel and more, the Chamber of Commerce strives to provide its members with the incentives, benefits, representation and support needed to make their enterprises grow in a flourishing economy. Whether the issue at hand is local, regional, provincial or national, the Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce strives to be there for its members.

Russ Beerling President, Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce

Those who make Fort St. John and area their home soon find it to be a dynamic centre for nearly 65,000 residents in Northeastern BC. As the largest city in the Northeast we are also the service centre for the province’s oil and gas industry, while also serving the agriculture and forestry industries – and a growing tourism sector. In fact, Fort St. John this year was named the Forest Capital of BC!

Bruce Lantz Mayor, City of Fort St. John

Fort St. John has enjoyed steady and sustainable growth for many years and is ideally positioned to withstand the economic fluctuations that plague many other areas of the world. Our retail, industrial and residential growth, coupled with a municipal government determined to manage that growth efficiently, fosters a sense of energy second to none in the nation. This is a great place to live and it’s a great time to live here – in a city that is open for business. enny Morrison grew up in Fort St. John and joined the Elks Speed Skating Club as a young child where his speed skating skills developed and flourished. His biggest success so far has been winning a silver medal in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, as a member of the Canadian Mens’ Speed Skating Pursuit Team. In 2007, Denny took a gold medal in the 1000 metre event at the World Cup Finals, held in Calgary. In January 2008, Denny won a gold medal in the 1,000 Meter race at the World Cup in Hamar, Norway. Most recently, on March 15th 2008, Denny broke the 1,500 meter speed skating world record with a time of 1:42.01, and earned a $25,000 cash prize.

Denny Morrison Photo DESGphoto / Lars Hagen

Currently, Denny is working hard and continuing his training for the 2010 Olympics to be held right here in BC. When he is not working and training in Calgary, Denny enjoys heading back to Fort St. John to visit the family, and even going for a few laps around The Outdoor Oval. Denny’s older brother Jay is also an accomplis hed speed skater – he developed his skills in here in Fort St. John as well. Today, Jay competes on the world circuit and is also rated as one of the best speed skaters in the world, along with his younger brother. The Olympic path was paved for the Morrison’s by Fort St. John’s first Olympian, Linda Johnson-Blair. She competed in long track speedskating at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.

Downtown Shopping Fort St. John is growing - and energetic entrepreneurs and established big brand names are opening new businesses all the time to service the citizens of Fort St. John. The City has been recognized as one of the best places in Canada for business success. There is ample opportunity for forward-thinking investors and entrepreneurs to take a serious look at the opportunities that exist in the Energetic City.

Downtown Development The downtown area of Fort St. John is continuing to evolve – and it isn’t without it’s challenges. Downtown is a diverse mix of older buildings mixed with newer developments and a challenging situation with the many “brown lots” – old gas stations that left the soil beneath them contaminated, and now requiring costly cleanup before they can be developed or turned into green space. On the bright side, many of the older buildings downtown are being improved - the recently re-opened Lido Theatre shows the opportunity for the history of Fort St. John to find a new life … there are plans for many of the other older buildings downtown to find new lives or be re-developed into the next generation of Downtown Fort St. John. Each year, the community celebrates our potential by participating in the Fort St. John Arts Council’s Flower pot project and Communities in Bloom. Residents and businesses in Fort St. John are proud of our beauty and our potential for the future.

Fort St. John is full of great shopping opportunities that cater to all tastes. Quaint boutiques, specialized retail shops, large chains, and commercial establishments are all open for business!

Oil & Gas

The Energy Industry

T

he energy industry attracts dedicated souls that are ready to get their hands dirty and make sure the fast-paced industry continues to chug along and power the growth of Northeastern BC. The oil and gas sector in British Columbia is one of the stars of the provincial economy, generating significant economic activity each year and employing thousands of British Columbians. The Government of British Columbia is committed to opening up every region and community of the province to a wealth of new opportunities; BC’s oil and gas sector holds tremendous promise for BC. The natural gas industry has grown rapidly over the last several years and growth is expected to continue. Natural gas development in the Northeast represents a major and growing sector of the province’s economy. Large, world-class discoveries have fostered increased international interest in our natural gas potential. Since deregulation of gas markets in 1985, British Columbia natural gas has played a growing role in domestic and international markets. Increased use of natural gas for electricity generation in BC and in the United States offers promising market opportunities.

30 Fort St. John & Area Community Guide

The Northeast is the only area of British Columbia producing commercial quantities of oil and gas and has been a focus of petroleum exploration and development since 1952. Its 194,000 square kilometres include the northern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the northwest part of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Gas is processed at 38 plants and central dehydrators in northeastern British Columbia; major plants are located in Taylor, Fort Nelson, and Pine River (near Chetwynd). These plants, along with hundreds of service companies employ thousands of people in the area and throughout the province. Service companies include anything from a catering company, trailer rentals, first aid attendants and welders to vacuum trucks.

crude oil, natural gas and pipeline activities throughout British Columbia. Its headquarters are in Fort St. John, central to much of the drilling activity in the province’s Northeast.

BC remains an attractive market for the major energy players - even with the recent economic pressures, the industry hasn’t seen much of a slow down. The future looks bright - Shale Gas Plays like the Montney and Horn River Basin promise to drive future growth.

Additional support is provided to the industry through the provincial Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources and organizations such as Energy Services BC. Energy Services BC is the only British Columbia-based oil and gas industry association representing members at the regional, provincial and national level. Regional and provincial initiatives have been ongoing since the inception of the society in 1974.

Fort St. John is home to the BC Oil & Gas Commission (OGC). The OGC is a Crown agency dedicated to regulating

The Oil and Gas Commission’s mandate is to provide a ‘one window’ approach to reviews of oil and gas industry applications and ensure environmental, economic and social impacts are taken into account prior to any development activities. Since its inception over ten years ago, the Commission has assumed most of the oil and gas regulatory responsibilities formerly held by provincial government ministries. It is also unique in the fact the organization is based in Fort St. John - a long way from the Lower Mainland, where government agencies are usually headquartered.

Oil & Gas

The Energy Industry The city has attracted and impressed some of the biggest names in the international energy industry. In addition to oil and gas, just to the west of Fort St. John stand the mighty Peace Canyon and W.A.C. Bennett Dams, which provide over 40% of the province’s hydroelectric power. Williston Lake, the reservoir for the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, is the largest manmade body of water in British Columbia and the ninth largest hydroelectric reservoir in the world. The construction of a third dam on the Peace River, “Site C”, to be located just 7 km from Fort St. John is currently under consideration. When it comes to energy production, Fort St. John really lives up to our name, “The Energetic City!”.

An Alaska Highway Tragedy Remembered

A tragedy that happened on Charlie Lake in 1942 while building the Alaska Highway was nearly forgotten about... until a few dedicated local Fort St. John residents dug up the details on the accident that claimed 12 lives. Today, a monument stands on the shores of Charlie Lake for all to remember the sacrafice made by Canadians and Americans during the building of the great Alaska Highway. Not long after the bombing of pearl harbour on December 7th 1941, President Franklin D. Rossevelt approved a plan to build an inland supply route from Canada to Alaska. Construction of the Alaska Highway began in March 1942 and brought nearly 11,000 american soldiers to Northern British Columbia, the Yukon, and Alaska. As the work began, many soldiers were stationed in the Fort St. John area.

choppy, with one foot waves - powered by two 22 Horsepower motors, the boat proceeded north in the increasingly rough water and stronger headwinds, with waves soon reaching two to three feet.

Shortly after 8 AM, on May 14th, 1942, a pontoon boat left the 341st Engineer Regiment landing at the south end of Charlie Lake to deliver equipment, supplies, and personnel to Company E’s Bivouac site at the north end of the lake, a distance of about 12 Miles, (20 KM). There were seventeen men on board. Major John Marvin Turvey, in charge of the expedition, had overseen the loading of the equipment, which included a radio command car, a bulldozer, drums of oil, and other supplies.

By 11:15 AM, the boat was about two thirds of the way to its destination and in the middle of the lake. The men then discovered that a plug had come out of the gas line of one of the motors and gasoline was draining out. They had just rounded the headland when Major Turvey ordered a turn to the west shore. As the boat started to turn, two waves hit in succession, flooding the right pontoon, which went under, and tipping the raft at a precarious angle. Then it settled and went under, all in less than two minutes.

The two-bay, three boat raft had been built the previous day under the supervision of Lt. John Langendoorf, of the 74th Engineer Company. When they started out from the south end of the lake, the water was

A mile and a half away in his cabin on the northwest shore of the lake, homesteader and trapper Gustaf Albin Hedin watched the pontoon ferry making its way up the lake as he cooked his breakfast. He

checked its progress through his field glasses, returned to his stove, then checked the lake again. This time, the boat was nowhere to be seen. Instead, he saw men bobbing up and down in the water. Within two minutes, he had launched his 14 foot rowboat - it took him about 15 minutes to reach the men. At the accident scene, he found nine men afloat - they were hindered in their own efforts to rescue themselves by their heavy winter clothing and boots. Some of them couldn’t swim. He hauled two survivors ashore, then returned to help the others, even though his own small boat was in danger of being swamped by the waves. Two more men were rescued during the second trip, and on a third trip, he saved one more man.

Major John Turvey, Dan Turvey who traveled from Michigan. US Ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins was at the ceremony, and spoke to the closeness of the US and Canada’s relationship. “The Alaska Highway is an excellent example of the US and Canada, two close neighbors with a lot in common, but a mutual respect for our differences, that came together to defeat a common enemy and build this amazing Alaska Highway in only 10 months. We must always remember those that have sacrafied their lives for our country, and it gives me great pride to be here today for this event.”

Five out of the seventeen men survived. A military investigation concluded that the accident was not caused by any misconduct. Trapper Gustaf Hedin received a medal from the Humane Society of Canada and was honored by the Canadian Military and the US Military. 66 years after this tragic incident, hundreds of people gathered on the shores of Charlie Lake on a cold, windy May 21st 2008 for the unveiling of a permanent memorial. Many family members of the solders traveled from across the USA to come to the ceremony, including the son of

In order to accommodate all the medical needs for the region, Northern Health has been sub-divided into three operational areas called Health Service Delivery Areas (HSDAs). Fort St. John, the hub for all the other surrounding small communities, lies within the boundaries of the Northeast Region. Northern Health medically provides acute care, mental health, public health, addictions, and home and community care services to over 300,000 people over an area of 600,000 square kilometres in the province of British Columbia.

44 Fort St. John & Area Community Guide

The generosity of Fort St. John and area showed true when the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation undertook the largest-ever fundraising campaign in the history of our community - to raise 1.3 million dollars towards the purchase of a new CT Scanner for local hospital. The Foundation’s goal of $1.3 million was achieved in only 9 short months and the final amount raised totaled over $1.7 million. Thanks to the generosity of many, the Hospital is now home to a brand-new, 64 slice CT Scanner and patients that were sent elsewhere can now access this basic diagnostic tool close to home and to the professionals they know and trust. Over 3000 donors contributed to the project, including 6 $100,000+ donations that came from the North Peace Savings and Credit Union, Canadian Natural Resources, D. Loewen Ent., Thelma Ostero, Mr. and Ms. P.A. Woodward Foundation and, Allan Markin (currently the chairman of Canadian Natural Resources). Our community works hard to ensure that everyone living here has access to the best possible health care that a northern community can provide. Why? Because we deserve no less.
