Celebrating 100 Years of Success
We opened our doors officially in Fort St. John in 1977, offering our expertise to the booming oil patch, and have never looked back. But our origins go back far earlier than that. Our founder W.G. McElhanney established the firm in a tiny one-room office in downtown Vancouver in 1910. By the 1950s, not long after oil was first discovered near Fort St. John, McElhanney crews were already in northeastern B.C. undertaking survey work for the oil and gas industry.

We have been working here ever since, building on the reputation W.G. McElhanney established from the beginning: one based on the ideals of professionalism, integrity, creativity, pride of ownership and dedication to doing our best for our clients. That reputation has been continued and built upon by everyone who has come through our doors since, making McElhanney what it is today: an internationally recognized company operating throughout western Canada and worldwide.

I
t is with great pleasure that I welcome to the North Peace and Northern Rockies region, nestled in northeastern British Columbia, the Best Place on Earth. In this Olympic year, British Columbia has welcomed the world. Those of us who live in the region know how fortunate we are to enjoy one of the most beautiful and pristine environments anywhere. Our local communities are built on the strong work ethic and dedication of our citizens. They work in a wide range of industries including: agriculture, forestry, mining, energy and tourism. I’ve been blessed to live in northeastern British Columbia for most of my life and prior to entering the Senate of Canada, had the immense honour of representing local interests in the B.C., Provincial Legislature since 1991. I have travelled the world but would not want to live anywhere else. I sincerely hope you enjoy your stay in Fort St. John or any of the other local communities you may visit. Please take some time to explore our unique and diverse region and I hope you come back soon.

W
hen you think of energy in BC, and indeed, all of Canada, you cannot help but think of “the Energetic City” – Fort St. John. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome new residents to the best city in the best province, in the best country in the world.
Those who make Fort St. John and area their home soon find it to be a dynamic centre for nearly 65,000 residents in Northeastern BC. Fort St. John continues to bustle with new businesses opening, residential construction, improvements to recreational facilities and cultural offerings. The state-of-the-art Enerplex will have its grand opening in October, and will usher in a new era of recreation for the City of Fort St. John. In addition to the work opportunities, there are many options for play as well. Fort St. John has a very vibrant arts and culture scene and was named the Music Capital of Northern BC in 2009. Downtown Development Fort St. John is growing, and energetic entrepreneurs and established big brand names are opening new businesses to service the area. The city has been recognized as one of the best places in Canada for business success, and there are many opportunities for forward-thinking investors and entrepreneurs to consider. Though many buildings in downtown Fort St. John have recently been renovated and have found new lives as places for residents and visitors to enjoy, the city center is not without challenges. Downtown Fort St. John is a diverse mix of older buildings, newer developments and challenging situations, with many “brown lots” – old gas stations that left the soil beneath them contaminated. These sites now require costly cleanup before they can be developed or used as green space.

a percussionist from Toronto who is normally seen playing with the likes of Nine Mile and Xavier Rudd, spent the month of November 2009 living in Fort St. John and working with Northern Groove. Here are his reflections on his adventures in the city:
“
Someone told me Fort St. John is a place for dreamers because it’s a place where dreams are left for the people to grab.
”
Fort St. John, British Columbia. Someone told me it was a place for dreamers because it’s a place where dreams are left for the people to grab. It’s a place assumed by others to be in the middle of nowhere and most people just asked me “What are you doing up there?” It’s a place where life happens. How does a musician who grew up in southern Ontario end up in “The John”? After being invited to come up and work for a month I was excited to actually live in a place I had only visited before. It’s been an adventure that I couldn’t have seen coming, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Fort St. John is a place that combines hard working and hard playing people. Everyday was an adventure, a new relationship, and an amazing time. This town is a beautiful combination of the land, the people, the work, and the Wild West.
In a matter of a month I think I have experienced every human emotion at a level that I never expected. It’s a community of people who support each other and wants every member to grow. It’s a place where dreams come true and a place where passions run high. I was told that once you drink from the Peace, you’ll always come back. Another friend just smiled and said “You’ll be back”, and others sent me away with warnings, “If you come back

Ceramic Artist: Shannon Butler › Shannon Butler makes one-of-a-kind ceramics and paintings at her very own Kilnhouse Studio in Fort St. John. Regular creations include unconventional mugs, tumblers, vases, pendants, mosaics, and watercolours. Customers can expect different pieces every time they come into Kilnhouse. Her work is influenced largely by music and fashion. This becomes apparent in the vintage lace texture impressed into the surface of the clay on many works and various song lyrics written in the surface of the pieces, including those of Johnny Cash, Brandi Carlile, and Ridley Bent to name a few. The pieces are all innately very feminine and Shannon says she aims to create a contemporary yet vintage aesthetic with her ceramic works. Her most recent work features a curious character named “Rainbow Owl”, a tell-it-like-it-is type of owl who speaks about northern culture, and is highly ironic. Kilnhouse Studio is located at 10510-101 Ave, and is open Fridays and Saturdays 10am to 6pm.
‹ Artist: Brian Jungen Brian Jungen is a Canadian artist from British Columbia with Swiss and Dunne-za First Nations ancestry; he is based in Vancouver. Jungen was born in Fort St. John, British Columbia and graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1992. Jungen’s art draws upon the tradition of “found art”, espoused by such twentieth-century artists as Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp. Instead of presenting objects “as-is,” however, Jungen often reworks them without fully concealing their original meaning or purpose. For instance, Jungen’s series Prototypes of New Understanding consists of aboriginal masks assembled and hand-sewn from parts of Nike Air Jordan shoes. Jungen writes: “It was interesting to see how by simply manipulating the Air Jordan shoes you could evoke specific cultural traditions whilst simultaneously amplifying the process of cultural corruption and assimilation. The Nike mask sculptures seemed to articulate a paradoxical relationship between a consumerist artifact and an ‘authentic’ native artifact.” An exhibition of Jungen’s work was held at the Vancouver Art Gallery from January 28 to April 30, 2006. Later that year he also held an exhibition at the Tate Modern from May 20 to July 9, 2006. Jungen is the first living Native American artist to exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian with Strange Comfort, on view from October 16, 2009 to August 8, 2010.

Day & Weekend Trips around Fort St. John
Looking for a little adventure? It’s always nice to get away for the day or take off for the weekend. Fort St. John is surrounded by so much awe and wonder that it could take years to fully explore all the sites that are only a few hours away. Liard Hot Springs The second largest hot spring in North America, Liard is located at mile 765 Alaska Highway, about 60km from Muncho Lake. It was once the home of the Beaver Dunne-za, Sikanni, and Nahanni First Nations. It is now a provincial park that features warm swamps, unique vegetation and spruce trees. The area is without a doubt one of the hallmarks of Northern BC, and is truly a hidden gem. Despite its beauty in the summer, this place holds even more magic in the winter when you can leisurely soak in the heat, while enjoying the contrast of the cold and icy weather. WAC Bennett Dam Learn about Northern British Columbia's hydroelectric history by taking a scenic road trip approximately two hours away, where you can tour the WAC Bennett Dam and Williston Lake, North America’s largest man made reservoir. This local trip is a perfect family getaway for the day. Peace Island Provincial Park Southwest of the Taylor bridge is an area famous for its annual gold panning championships, and a great place for family summer outings. Enjoy picnics, swimming in the river, and camping in one of the designated areas. There is also a boat launch available for those who wish to discover the majestic Peace River and explore its hidden wonder. Pink Mountain On the Alaska Highway, drive 180km north of Fort St. John until you reach mile 147, then make a turn on Road 192 and drive up a mountain (SUV or 4x4 recommended). You'll soon discover this unique landmark and the breathtaking view from the top. Pink Mountain received its name because it literally glows pink from a distance in the morning sunrise when the fireweeds are in full bloom. These flowers also attract rare arctic butterflies giving the mountain an edge of mystery.

Kinuseo Falls Higher than Niagara Falls, Kinuseo Falls is a beautiful symbol of Northern BC that is recognized the world over. The falls are about an hour and a half drive from Tumbler Ridge. You can see the falls from the top viewing platform just off the parking lot, or hike down a semi-challenging trail to the bottom and look up in amazement. While you’re on your way to Kinuseo, stop in Tumbler Ridge and get information on where you can find dinosaur tracks! Whispering Pine Ski Area Go east of Fort St. John on Highway 64, past the Alberta border towards Worsley. This is where you will find the Whispering Pine Ski Area. With many well groomed runs, it is a great hill to start if you’re a beginner, and is a perfect place to take the entire family. Whispering Pines features many downhill runs, a brand new chair lift, and scenic cross-country ski trails. Powder King Crave Powder? Then Powder King is just the place for you. Powder King is located in the Pine Pass about 2.5 hours south of Fort St. John, half way to Prince George. World famous for its powder and well known for its pristine atmosphere, this hill is a great challenge for the more seasoned skiers who prefer to make their own tracks, while still offering exceptional groomed runs for all levels.

Energy • Forestry • Agriculture
Our Core
W
ith our three main industries, forestry, agriculture and energy supporting our economy, Fort St. John has a strong, diverse and growing industrial base.
A Major Player since the 1970’s
The Northeast is the only area of British Columbia producing commercial quantities of oil and gas, and has been a focus of petroleum exploration and development since 1952. Our 194,000 square kilometers include the northern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the northwest part of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Gas is processed at 38 plants and central dehydrators in Northeastern British Columbia. Major plants are located in Taylor, Fort Nelson and Pine River. Fort St. John is central to the drilling activity in Northern BC, and because it is situated in a region that is estimated to have one of the largest oil and gas deposits in the world, Fort St. John maintains a steady pace despite North America’s recent economic setbacks.
The expansion of the industry over the past decade has fueled much of the province’s economic growth and prosperity, and has provided billions of dollars to the provincial treasury.

26 Fort St. John & Area COMMUNITY GUIDE
Since the beginning of it’s development in 1970, the Oil and Gas industry in Northeast BC continues to play a huge role in attracting a tremendous amount of human resources to the area, and is an attractive market for many major energy players.
Headquarters of the Oil & Gas Commission The BC Oil and Gas Commission headquarters are located in Fort St. John. The OGC is the crown agency responsible for the regulation of crude-oil, natural gas and pipeline activities throughout B.C. The OGC mandates a “one-window” policy and considers the potential environmental, economic and social impacts prior to any developmental activities, and maintains regulatory oversight of existing projects.
BC Based Energy Energy Services BC is the only British Columbia based oil and gas industry association, representing members at the regional, provincial, and national level. Local energy service companies have the equiptment, training and skills to do the work required for the oil and gas activity in the area. In addition to oil and gas, the mighty Peace Canyon and WAC Bennett Dams stand to the west of Fort St. John and provide over 40% of British Columbia’s hydroelectric power.
Site C Dam likely to go ahead The BC Liberal government has given the go ahead for the Site C Dam project to move forward to an independent environmental assessment. If the third phase passes successfully, the dam will create up to 35,000 jobs and will be generating power by 2020. The impact of this project on our community will be huge, with thousands of people moving to the community during construction, and many spin-off jobs being created. While the project will be good for our economy, a beautiful river valley will be lost with the construction of the dam.

Forestry T
he Peace Region values the importance of the forestry industry and earned the title “Forestry Capital of BC” for the year 2009. Our main forestry facilities, the Fort St. John Canfor Sawmill, the Taylor Pulp Mill and the most recently constructed Peace Valley OSB plant, employ thousands of people in our area. Fast growing poplar trees grow in abundance in this area, providing most of the fiber for our mills and processing facilities. Because of our efficient and costeffective operations the forestry industry in Fort St. John has not been impacted by mill shutdowns and slowdowns like other areas of the province in the past few years. It is a testament to our efficient workforce and dedicated can-do attitude that our area continues to tick along and outpace others in the industry.

The North Peace Economic Development Commission City of Fort St. John, District of Hudson’ Hope, District of Taylor and Electoral Areas “B” & “C” “The year was 1930; I was two days from being 19. I had just arrived from Peace River Crossing. Hudson’s Hope looks like a small paradise and reminded me of the home I had left in England two years before.” —Ethel Rutledge, Hudson’s Hope resident – 96 years young
M
y name is Sandra Lemmon and I am the new Economic Development Officer for the North Peace region. I too felt I had arrived in paradise when I re-located from Canmore, AB this past August. The region is vast in geography and diverse in economies. With a mission to “Encourage economic development projects to diversify and strengthen the economy of the North Peace, the North Peace Economic Development Commission focuses on building regional alliances, providing leadership, information and research and eliminating the barriers to economic development in the North Peace region as serves a regional population of 60,000. “The North Peace has been providing economic opportunities since Alexander Mackenzie and today there are more opportunities than ever”, notes Commission Chair, Dan Davies and life long resident Bisected by the mighty Peace River, the BC Peace region comprises almost one-quarter of British Columbia’s land area. Fur traders, explorers and homesteaders settled in this vast northeast region of British Columbia with dreams of freedom and a better life - the same dreams that continue to attract people to the Peace Region today. Now, instead of hardship, these modern day settlers find contemporary community facilities, and remarkable job and business opportunities. The people of this region live here because they like it here. Young families make up the largest part of this area’s residents, and for good reason. The North Peace region is not only a great place to start a small business or to find a job, it is also a great place to raise a family and enjoy a high quality of life. The North Peace economic region is the ancestral home to the Beaver and Athabasca speaking tribes: Blueberry River First Nations, Halfway River First Nation and Doig River First Nation. By developing trust, three of the local First Nations within in the Treaty 8 (one of whom is the Doig River First Nation) recently signed Agreements with the Provincial Government, which will enable the communities to have the foundation of stainability. Today these communities are building partnerships to ensure a prosperous future engaging in economic activities like construction, road building, forestry, oilfield services, seismic, first aid and safety services, 32 Fort St. John & Area COMMUNITY GUIDE
and reclamation. Local First Nations are fostering cultural awareness and collaboration and seeking partnerships to build capacity in all types of business and services. They are also becoming an active investor within the region. From prairie farmland and boreal forest to alpine tundra and rugged Rocky Mountains, the Peace Region produces 90 per cent of the province’s grain, 38 per cent of its hydroelectric power, has some of the largest gas fields in North America with over 10,000 wells drilled, employs about 2,300 forestry workers and plays host to 300,000 tourists each year. As the only prairie in British Columbia, it also is home to the province’s grain and oil seed industries, and is the most northerly agricultural area of Canada. Recently, the NPEDC worked closely with the North Pine Farmers Institute to secure nearly one million dollars in funding from the Northern Development Initiative Trust to purchase and operate a grain elevator and rail head in Fort St. John, creating jobs and supporting agriculture producers in the North Peace region - a good example of collaboration between all levels of government. As the “Energy Capital” of the Province, the City of Fort St. John offers big city amenities with small community friendliness. Dr. Sherry Cooper, Global Economic Strategist & Executive Vice President, BMO Financial Group recently named Fort St. John as one of the Top-10 Small Business Hotbeds in Canada.

36 Fort St. John & Area COMMUNITY GUIDE
TAYLOR Originally called Taylor Flats, the district of Taylor has been a part of the Peace Region for over ninety years. Taylor is located at mile 36 of the Alaska Highway, 56km north of Dawson Creek and 18km south of Fort St. John. About 1,400 residents are proud to call Taylor home. It is also home to the world’s largest golf ball, which was once an old fuel tank. The ball is 12.89 metres in diameter and weighs 37 tons. If golf is your thing, be sure to check out its home at the Lone Wolf Golf Club, an 18 hole, par 72 championship course. Taylor celebrates the role prospectors played in developing the region every year with the World’s Invitational Gold Panning Championships that are held during the long weekend in August. In addition, Taylor is proud to be home to the Church of the Good Shepherd, a special heritage site built by volunteers in 1932.
Neighbours CHARLIE LAKE The community of Charlie Lake is located along Highway 97, about 6km north on the Alaska Highway from Fort St. John. Charlie Lake has over 2,500 residents with a trading area of well over 6,000 people. Amenities include a school, church, gas station, campgrounds and local residences. Charlie Lake is a large lake home to many species of fish including walleye, northern pike and yellow perch. A few great places to rest for the afternoon are Charlie Lake Provincial Park, located on the west side, or Beatton Provincial Park on the east side of the lake.
HUDSON’S HOPE Hudson’s Hope is rich in culture. Known as the third-oldest European community in British Columbia, it has a long fur trading history dating back to the 1700’s. The Hudson’s Hope Museum has quite an impressive display of local fossils and dinosaur footprints that have been recovered over the years. Situated 90km west of the city of Fort St. John and 66km north of Chetwynd on Highway 29, this quaint town of approximately 1200 people is in the Rocky Mountain foothills. The magnificent scenery is filled with an abundance of rivers, lakes and wildlife, and is an ecologically diverse area. One of the world’s largest earth-filled dams, the WAC Bennett Dam, is open for underground tours in the summer season and features some amazing exhibits.

Fort St. John Flyers Win the Allan Cup The Canadian Hockey Association was formed in 1914, and the “Allan Cup” was accepted by the association as the trophy emblematic of the senior amateur hockey championship of Canada. The Allan Cup is one of Canada’s most legendary hockey trophies. In April 2010, not only did Fort St. John welcome teams and visitors from across Canada to the Energetic City for the week long Allen Cup tournament, but our very own Fort St. John Flyers won the trophy! Many local Fort St. John businesses and residents donated significant sponsorship and time to make the tournament happen. Congratulations to our Senior AAA Fort St. John Flyers team.

Denny Morrison
Our Olympic Hero
B
orn in Chetwynd, Denny Morrison started skating at parent-and-tot skates with his mother when he was three and continued his training at the Fort St. John Elk Speed Skating Club where his path was paved by Fort St. John’s first Olympian, Linda Johnson-Blair. In 2003, Denny began his full-time career as a speed skater and trained in Calgary. In person, Denny appears to be an ordinary, small-town kind of guy. Yet, behind this average demure is a phenomenal and talented Olympian.
Natural Gas On the ice, Denny inevitably skates to win. He has determination and confidence though his focus is specifically on his technique. When he trained with his competitor Shani Davis, Denny saw it as a way to motivate himself in order to improve his ability to skate rather than treating Shani like the opposing competition. Denny won silver in the team pursuit event at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin. He also finished 11th in the 1,500 meters and 19th in the 1,000 during his Olympic debut. Morrison won the 2008 world single distance championship titles in the 1,000 and 1,500, in which he set a world record of 1:42.01. Morrison won 11 medals during the 2007-08 World Cup season, including gold twice. In 2009, Morrison placed second in the 1,000 meters and third in the 1,500 at the Single Distances in March. He was seventh in the All-Around at the 2009 World Championships at Hamar, Norway. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, working with his fellow team members Matthieu Giroux and Lucas Makowsky, they together won Gold at the 2010 Olympics here on home soil. Fort St. John is proud to say that Denny Morrison is the perfect role model for anyone who comes from a small town and accomplishes dreams that may appear to be beyond ones reach. As Fort St. John’s Olympic hero, Denny’s accomplishments remind the people of this city to always strive hard and to remember what they’re truly capable of.

Land Beyond The Peace
In 1947, the Fort St. John & District Board of Trade commissioned a documentary film about the area north of the Peace River. The colour film shows familiar scenes around the area and shots of our bountiful agricultural, trapping, and service industries. The film features nostalgic shots of the Fort St. John Airport, the press room of the Alaska Highway News and the Harvest Festival parade down main street.
“ Yet, while we have our fun, we’re
aware of the work that is yet to be done in this land of ours.... there is need for many willing hands to share in the work of building this new empire, in the land beyond the Peace.” To view the film online visit: www.fsjchamber.com
