CHERI BEASLEY U.S. Senate, North Carolina • • •

A devoted public servant and an experienced leader A champion for North Carolina working families An opportunity to flip a Senate seat and make history

A devoted public servant and an experienced leader

Cheri Beasley is a devoted public servant and an experienced leader

who has dedicated her life to the people of North Carolina. Cheri was taught that she could accomplish anything with hard work and faith. Her mom was a trailblazer, earning a Ph.D., and becoming a university dean and a national leader in her field. After Cheri graduated from college, she went on to earn a law degree and began her legal career as a public defender in Fayetteville. She won her first election as district judge shortly after she and her husband Curt welcomed their twin boys, Thomas and Matthew. In 1999, she was appointed as a state district court judge and won elections for the position in 2002 and 2006. Cheri won a seat on the court of appeals in 2008 by a commanding 15-point margin, becoming the first African American woman to win a statewide election. In 2014, Cheri was elected associate justice of the state Supreme Court, overcoming a Republican wave that flipped Democratic-held seats in North Carolina and states across the country. In 2019, Cheri made history by becoming the first African American woman to serve as chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Now, she is running for Senate to fight for all North Carolinians.

A champion for North Carolina working families Cheri is running for Senate to expand opportunity for all North Carolinians. “Whether it’s health care, education, or the ability to find work that supports a family and retire with dignity, too often Washington only responds to the well-connected,” she has said. “As we come out of this pandemic, now more than ever, that needs to end.” Cheri is ready to continue her career of outstanding public service as a powerful advocate for North Carolinians in the Senate.

An opportunity to flip a Senate seat and make history Cheri is running for the open U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican incumbent Senator Richard Burr, who is not seeking reelection in 2022. Republicans are sure to do everything in their power to keep this swing state seat under their control and to keep Democrats from strengthening our razor-thin majority in the 50-50 Senate. We know Cheri has what it takes because she has won tough statewide elections twice before — for the court of appeals in 2008 and for the state Supreme Court in 2014. North Carolina has never before elected a African American senator, and Cheri has what it takes to make history as the first. Currently, there are no African American women serving in the U.S. Senate, and the EMILY’s List community has the opportunity to help Cheri give African American women across the country a powerful new voice in Washington. Let’s show Cheri our full support, and help elect this champion for North Carolina working families to the Senate.

He began his career as a fun past time, practiced in stolen moments of free time from his growing personal training business. With more and more demands for his digital artwork, Dwayne knew he had another business in the making. He finds inspiration in his everyday life and spends countless hours perfecting his craft. His art is unique and he enjoys delaying the gratification of each piece by waiting a few days after a project is completed before releasing it to the public. The pieces that do make it to the public eye, prove eye-catching, and Dwayne wholeheartedly believes in them. This method works since it was one of his designs that initially caught the eye of Mara Prose.

RELAX vs. NATURAL To relax or not to relax, a question that has baffled minds since the perm first arrived in 1905. In 2021 women continue to struggle with the idea of embracing their natural hair or laying those natural baby hairs down with a perm. The perm [permanent] makes it easier to manage by relaxing the natural curl pattern from the hair which makes day-to-day hairstyling, like combing and brushing easier. The hair will maintain a straight appearance, regardless of the humidity which makes life just a little bit more convenient. On the other side, permanently rearranging the natural structure of the hair can increase the chances of regular breakage and shedding, which causes damage to the scalp and hair. It may be easier to manage, but it is harder to maintain. A retouch should happen somewhere between four to eight weeks. The hair can become over processed if not applied correctly. If you decide on maintaining your natural hair, get ready for the time of your life! It’s all about the volume and bounce. The structure of the hair is stronger than relaxed hair and the elasticity will help prevent breakage. If versatility is your jam, installing different styles will certainly satisfy you. Natural hair allows for the simplicity of washing -n-go, two strand twist, twist out, silk press or if you’re really feeling adventurous, try locs. Whatever you chose, understand it comes with a cost (not just monetarily). For natural hair, shrinkage may be an issue. You will have to straighten the hair to see your true length. Another concern is tangling and knotting, which cost you time (and time is still money) when caring for your natural hair. You may even experience “the swell” or frizzy or frizzing in humid climates or when working out.

So, there you go, relax or not to relax? That is still the question. -Master Stylist: Angela Robinson, American best.

for decades and has become increasingly popular among the African American community. It signifies a radical acceptance of the African culture and leads to a healthier head of hair. Although, seemingly a positive, the trending of natural hair has been cast down by American corporations but has continued to triumph over cultural hurdles in corporate America. Historically, natural hair, making it’s impact in the supreme court and although failing court appeals, the expression of hair within black culture continues to exude the spirit of boldness and resilience in today’s workforce. According to African culture, hair is the highest point of the human body, regarded as the closest to the Most High, and symbolizes the pathway to the soul. In African tradition hair maintenance is upheld by a close family member or friend for life. It is believed to be harmful to the hair if managed in the wrong hands. Within this tradition we revived the famous reply “Don’t touch my hair.” Many African Americans can certify that it’s preferable not to have “just anybody” styling their hair. This is because black hair tells a story. What narrative is your hair sharing in the 21st century? Black hair is sacred, black hair is enchanting, black hair is beautiful, black hair is charming, black hair is illustrative. Black hair is black culture! Makeup is art, beauty is you! -

Blended Cosmetics

B

lended Cosmetics' goal is to help every woman express themselves through makeup. We wanted to create a cosmetic line for all women and encourage women to be BOLD and BEAUTIFUL. Our products are very special to us because our products are thoroughly thought out. We do external research on all of our products, to Include the naming of palettes, graphics, and shades. We are dedicated to delivering high-quality and cruelty-free products. HOW DO I KEEP MY MAKEUP LOOKING FRESH ALL DAY?

The best way to lock your look in place is setting spray. Oily skin: Your mission is to find a setting spray that mattes. Avoid anything that says "hydrating", “moisturizing" , or "dewy". Dry Skin: Your goal is to look for terms like "moisturizing," "dewy," and "luminous.” Setting spray is the final step in your makeup routine. It ensures your makeup sets for hours. 2 STEP PERFECT COMBO: LIP LINER AND LIP GLOSS One tip for how to keep your lip gloss on all day is by first applying lip liner. Lip liners help shape and define lips. Lip gloss will adhere to the lip liner and application will become smooth. Once your liner is on, you’re ready for lip gloss application. Simply line your lips with lip liner then carefully fill in lips with liner. Swipe lip gloss across your lips. Be careful to stay away from your lip line.

SUMMER BEAUTY SECRETS Applying lash glue to lashes and lash lines provide easier application. Prep your skin BEFORE applying makeup. Preparing your skin for makeup ensures that application goes on evenly. Prime your eyes with an eye shadow base to create the perfect blank canvas for making the eye shadow look more vibrant. Try prepping your lips with a gentle lip scrub. Exfoliation will help buff away dry skin on lips, leaving you with a smoother, softer canvas.

Secret To BETTER Skin! I am often asked, “what is the secret to great skin” and my answer is, cleansing. Yes, it may seem so simple, but it is the easiest step in your skincare routine, and the most important. Without proper cleansing and the correct cleanser for your skin type or condition, all the subsequent steps are an epic fail. Let’s start off by exploring when to cleanse. The rule of thumb is twice a day: once in the evening and again in the morning. Why cleanse at night? -I’m glad you asked. You’ll need to remove all the dirt, oil, debris, and makeup (if you’re wearing make-up) layers that have accumulated throughout the day. Should you cleanse if you do not wear makeup? Absolutely! (And your skin will thank you for it). Contrary to popular belief, your naked skin is exposed to different environments throughout the day. For example, you wake up in your home (environment 1), get in your car (environment 2), drive to the store (environment 3), go to work (environment 4), take that much need lunchbreak (environment 5), and after you’ve given your all to the workplace, you return home. Each of these environments contribute to the dirt, oil, debris layers and do affect your skin. So, cleanse them away. It must be said, if you wear make-up, you need to cleanse your face nightly. Why? Because! Here’s something to consider. For every night you sleep with make-up on your face, you age your skin by 7 days. The makeup prevents your skin from performing the normal cellular turnover process, leading to breakouts, clogged pores, dry skin causing pre-mature lines and wrinkles. Now let’s get into that morning cleanse. Take note. If you are going to put on make-up, serum, or SPF, your skin needs that clean foundation. The morning cleanse may need to be avoided for certain skin types (sensitive, rosacea, or extreme dry skin (an oil-based treatment maybe best here)). For normal to oily skin, the morning cleanse is essential to washing away dead skin cells that shed at night, sebum, produced by the skin, and the yucky toxins that your skin has excreted. Now, let’s choose a cleanser. How do you know what type of cleanser is best for you? Should you purchase that cleanser that gives you that “squeaky clean” feeling? NO! If you cleanse your skin and you feel squeaky, guess what? Your skin is dehydrated and you are doing more harm than good. Oily skin types can experience dehydration even when then skin is producing excess sebum to self-protect. Sometimes you are the reason your skin is oily. If you are using cleansers that remove all the oil from your skin, you are compromising your skins barrier, causing the skin to over produce oil to hydrate. If you are using a gel cleanser and notice your skin has a white cast to it after washing, you should consider a cream for daily cleaning and possibly use the gel bi-weekly as a deep cleansing solution. If you are a dry skin type, a cream cleanser is the first step in relieving that dryness. Sorry, you will not have the visual fulfilment of seeing foam or bubbles, but the after-effects of the cream will leave your skin feeling comforted, hydrated, and silky smooth. Finally, we can address the how-to. It may seem elementary, but I meet hundreds of people that do not know how to properly cleanse their skin. Question, do you wet your face before you add cleanser? If you said yes, keep reading. The correct answer is, NO. Let’s get clean. With clean hands, place a dime to quarter size of cleanser in the palm of your hand and spread the cleanser over your face. Sure, it may feel harder to spread but use circular motions to work the cleanser over your skin, this will attract all the dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants. Then and only then should you add water to cause the gel cleanser to foam or the cream cleanser to thicken. Finally rinse your skin with warm water.

Happy cleansing! *Please note, these are general cleansing tips to help improve the quality and health of your skin, however it is always best to consult a skincare professional.

Loc Conversations My name is Candesha Daniels, owner and operator of Cande’s Barber Styling Studio. I have a cosmetology license originating in New York. In 2018 I moved to Fayetteville, NC and gained reciprocity enabling me to obtain my NC cosmetology license. I started offering loc maintenance services when I was in cosmetology school in 2010. Once I graduated I started working in a natural hair salon on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn NY. There I met some dope locticians. One of the stylist did a braid on her client that made his hair into a neat roll. I was mesmerized. I could not figure out how she did it. When I asked, she said “it’s basically an inside out braid,” in this heavy West Indian accent. I asked her to teach me but she never did. That, however, was the day I fell in love with locs. I was determined to learn. I started taking classes, watching videos, and paying close attention to the stylists around me that I thought were “super dope”. In learning how to maintain locs, I grew a kind of aching curiosity. I wanted to know everything I could about them. Naturally, Who was the first person to wear them? Where did they originate? Why do people wear them? Are there different types? Most importantly, in my profession, how to properly care, maintain and style them.

In my research, I found, locs originated in India. The encyclopedia of hair, a cultural history, documents the oldest known record of Locs to the Hindu men called Sadhus, circa 1800 BCE. That being said, Jamaican culture known as Rastafari is credited for modernizing the style in the 1930’s. It’s not only a sign of their African identity, but also a religious vow of separation from a society they refer to as Babylon.

In today’s American culture, locs are worn for many reasons, despite controversies that tend to dumb down our society.— but that’s a conversation for another day. Whether it be religious, cultural, fashion statement, or a protective style, many people of different nationalities have adopted locs as their hairstyle of choice. That’s where I come in, Cande Barber Stylist. I work with all types of hair, specializing in hair cuts and loc maintenance. My business offers a selection of loc services including: detox, color, individual styles, maintenance and products. Because I am passionate about the quality of services I offer, I also provide free education on maintenance to all my clients.

Conversations with a Champion SDJ: How long have you been a fitness trainer and what inspired you to do so? TL: I started training clients after I studied as an assistant to a generation Iron top 5 coach, Chris “Psycho” Lewis. I was inspired by the knowledge and gift of self-accomplishment that I can share with the world. It’s truly a blessing to be able to help guide an individual to his/her best self. SDJ: What are your personal fitness goals? TL: My goal in the fitness industry is to be that pillar of inspiration and motivation for those seeking that journey to be the best version of themselves. SDJ: Tell us about your training philosophy? TL: My training philosophy stems from my teacher, Chris Lewis (Psycho Fitness), where the mind and the body meets. Our training, pushes you to the edge of your limits; to the point where your mind pushes your body and takes you past the limits into your growth physically but most of all mentally. SDJ: What does your weekly routine look like? TL: My weekly routine consists of working out six days a week for at least 2 ½ hours a day not including cardio. I train to sculpt certain areas by doing individual body parts per day. This, in essence, promotes faster growth. SDJ: How do you keep clients motivated and engaged? TL: I keep clients engaged by cultivating the innate abilities within them. Believing in every clients’ ability to take charge and show them how they can go further than ever before. SDJ: Why can't I just do cardio? TL: It is possible to do just cardio (as long as you don’t do too much). However, too much cardio will definitely prevent you from building lean muscle. It will actually eat away at your muscles. Fat is burned inside of moving muscle. The more muscle you have the faster you are able to burn the fat. SDJ: How often do I need to work out per week? TL: Its best for you to workout at least 3-4 times a week to keep a lean physique. Also, maintain proper nutritional intake is key. SDJ: How quickly will I see the results of my training? TL: With consistency, you may see immediate results. SDJ: Due to this current Pandemic, many people do not feel comfortable in a gym setting. What are some things that we can do at home to maintain momentum and motivation? TL: This pandemic didn’t slow me down at all. When the gyms closed, I went to the park with a set of dumbbells and a squat bar and just went to work so to speak. In addition, I meal prepped twice a week. Determination and perseverance is key! SDJ: What's the best thing for weight loss and keeping the weight off? TL: My best suggestion for weight loss is to hire a good nutrition coach and “trust the nutrition process. Abs are made in the kitchen!” SDJ: What’s your general advice for a healthier relationship with food?

TL: Food can be an emotional rollercoaster and most of all an impulsive decision. Remember, that humans were put here to be hunters and gatherers. We should consume resources as your body needs them. Don’t make eating choices based off of emotions. Discipline yourself to intake only what your body needs not what you may want. SDJ: What would you recommend for beginners? TL: As a beginner, I eluded to earlier, “Trust the Process!” Find the right coach and not only trust the process but believe in the process. SDJ: In summation, what would you like to leave with a readers? TL: I believe that in order for this world to prosper from who you really are, you have to present the best version of yourself that you can, mentally and physically.

What is special about black hair? I would have to say the many textures that we possess. We can do so much with our hair! What is your opinion of “good hair” “Good hair” to me is HEALTHY hair! What is your secret to "good hair"? Using great products on my clients and making sure they use the same products at home. I encourage my clients to get treatments and trims along with a healthy diet. What are your best hair care tips? I would have to say it’s important to know what you are putting in your hair, (shampoo, conditioner, and hair care products). Never be afraid to ask your stylist questions about what they are using. In addition, DO NOT color your own hair (LOL). It’s good to take care of your hair at home in between salon visits, just ask your stylist how.

Bella Amor Salon LLC

What makes you "glow" apart from your hair? My personality and my passion . The most popular hairstyle of 2020 was the "Modern Shag". What do you think will be the hairstyle of 2021? Natural blowouts with lots of curls and messy up-do’s .

15800 Northcross Dr. Huntersville, NC 28078 (980) 643-0079

What are your favorite hairstyles? I love curls! Short and sassy cuts and special occasion hairstyles. What do you enjoy most about what you do? I enjoy catering to my clients in every way. Seeing the transformation is my favorite part! I love to see their reactions to the finish look as well. Where do you see yourself in five years? Having a bigger salon that will be fully staffed with amazing stylists as I travel and teach.

L

egacy Barber Studio is a full-service Barbershop located in El Paso, Texas. This establishment is a product of the dreams of the owner Lamont Jackson; a famed Barber, with over twenty years of experience. Due to our offering of disruptive, groundbreaking services that introduce the world to the future of barbering, Legacy Barber Studio is referred to as the place where “The Barber Experience is Reimagined”. At Legacy Barber Studio, we explore all aspects of barbering, by diving deeper than the surface-level functions of cutting hair. We are thrilled to introduce the world to the clinical side of barbering. Typically, when people think of barbering, they automatically associate it with a mere “haircut”. However, our unconventional, and innovative services are changing the way the barbering industry is perceived.

Legacy Barber Studio specializes in hair, scalp and skin treatments of all sorts. Our services range from traditional haircuts to specialty services such as our Advanced Barber Systems: non-surgical hair replacement units, Exfoliating Thermal Scalp Scrub, 24 KT Gold Neck and Chin Therapy and more. We offer exclusive beard and hot towel services, as well as Ozone Steam treatments. Additionally, we render premium services that provide solutions for common issues pertaining to skin, scalp and hair, such as ingrown hair extractions, blackhead, and whitehead removal. Our exclusive services which are performed by our highly skilled and personable barbers and estheticians, along with our comforting atmosphere; is what makes Legacy Barber Studio a unique, end to end barbershop, where you are guaranteed to leave feeling like the most confident and attractive version of yourself. www.legacybarberstudiollc.com
