Talent Spotlight

By: Harold Smith Angela Tomlinson

As you take a leisurely stroll down Hay Street, Fayetteville, NC on any given 4th Friday, you can hear the hustle and bustle of the community with great anticipation an excitement awaiting the evening’s festivities. Art vendors, entertainers, specialty shops, galleries, and the crisp sounds of laughter and merriment fill the streets for approximately four to five blocks. As you continue to stroll, you will begin to hear to hear melodious resonances permeate the atmosphere. Distinct echoes totally different from the guitars, trumpets, saxophones and such. As you begin to follow the harmonious chords that will transcedly lead you to an 18 year old Violin Wizard; Mr. Dextorist Timmons.

Who would you say have been your strongest supporters? My aunt Ms. Brenda Singleton is actually my strongest supporter. She always encourages me to be and do the very best. She understands the music and the message that I am seeking to relay. You are making a difference at such a young age, what has kept/keeps you grounded? What keeps me humble is the fact that I am making a positive impact. The affirmative feedback that I receive is the encouragement and motivation that I need to continue this journey. Knowing that I am changing lives feeds the hunger and the drive to want to do more.

Define Violin Wizard…. Webster’s Dictionary defines wizard as of “the very best kind”. In my search for a name, I wanted to ensure that my name defined my craft and what I aspired to become. The Violin Wizard stemmed from my motivation for changing lives and the ability to leave people in awe as they listen to my music.

When and how did you first become interested in music and why did you choose the violin as your instrument of choice? The genesis of my music all started in the 5th grade. My class was introduced to stringed instruments. Of all the stringed instruments, the violin was the instrument that intrigued me the most. There was such an amazing sound that penetrated the atmosphere from such a small instrument. I was beyond amazed. How long have you been playing music? I have been playing for 9 years. I will be 19 years old in September. Who are your musical influences? My musical influence is a young man called “The Mad Violinist”. He is indeed one of the leaders of broken stereotypes. He is a violinist that plays straight from the soul to ensure that every song has a purpose. He is skilled to play any genre of music. Listening and following him has instilled a greater hunger within me to become even better at my craft. In addition, my High School Music Teacher, Janice Swoope was also a major influence. She was always a great motivation. I always aspired to be just like her. Does anyone in your family play music? Many of my family members play instruments. However, I am the only one that decided to pursue music in this manner.

“Knowing that I am changing lives feeds the hunger and the drive to want to do more” What venues have you utilized? Currently, I play as a street musician at Cliffdale Christian Center, Walgreens and 4th Friday events in downtown Fayetteville sponsored by the Arts Council. In addition, I have several events in Fayetteville and Charlotte in the works. What else do you do besides play music? When I’m not practicing my craft, I enjoy playing basketball. However, my true love is mentoring and teaching other young people. It truly does my heart good to deposit positive energy in others. What is your favorite genre of music and why? I love all genres of music but I have to say Hip Hop and R&B would be my favorite genres. Why do you do what you do? What is your motivating factor? My motivating factor is to inspire other young musicians to follow his/her dreams. Music is a universal language. I believe that I can speak to the masses through my music. My purpose is to change a mood, mindset and ultimately lives starting with my community evolving to the world.

What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I am currently enrolled in my first semester at Elizabeth City State University. I will be majoring in Music Performance – Violin. My plans are to continue to make a positive impact on campus as well as within the community. I would love to go on tour at some point to spread my message globally. However, no matter where I go, I must continue enriching the lives of everyone I encounter through my motivational speaking with my violin. One last thing, becoming one of the greatest violinists of my generation would be an honor as well. What closing remarks would you like to leave with our readers? In closing, I would like to add. Although I am only an 18 year old violinist; I must reiterate that I am a young adult that believes in fulfilling purpose. I am a young man striving to make a difference one community at a time. All young men are not lost. Some of us, including myself, are a “force to be reckoned with”. As I stated earlier, music is a universal language. Our gifts will make room for us.

My

Existence Is not Vanity Author Angela Tomlinson

Say what you will and feel as you do, but it won’t convince me that vanity speaks of my existence. My hands, my legs, my face, my body are molded and shaped in the manner for sheer purpose and all greatness. The operation of my mind, the tone and inflection of my voice and the twinkle of my eye speak of immense destiny. You can’t understand and you may never understand and I can’t begin to explain to you why I have been created to mark a statement in this Earth. An Earth that’s so flooded with smiles and frowns, an Earth that reeks with evil and an Earth that reveals its good. An Earth that was given to us to make it a pleasing place to reside yet the hands in control handled her loosely. The minds of the inhabitants shifted from the care of the next man or from the care of that woman and that child to…..”What can I do for me?” The domino effect began after this shift and the mindset became, “This man is for himself, that woman is only for herself,” but when will the prince and princesses of this Earth stand and say…..”I EXIST!” I exist to take the hand of that child who sees the beating that his mother takes from his father and lead him to see that life is about a choice and his life can be the opposite of what he has seen. I exist to extract the poison of prejudice from the veins of the yellow man, black man, white man, and the red man. I must “be,” so that they may see that when they cut and bleed, the blood runs red. I proclaim with a loud voice, “Come out and come into a common language of love and let love be and begin to subdue ill sown thoughts towards the color of one’s skin. My existence is to prick at the mindset of the young girl holding the bullets in one hand and a gun in the other with a determination in her eyes and a planted thought that “death,” would be more peaceful than the life of being bullied. The crack, the crystal meth, and the alcohol have made themselves known to the nations. They exist to pour slow death to its victim. They are successful with their existence and they fight to keep one’s eye fixated on the lie that they tell to their culprit that the only way to live is to continue to be intimate. Crack, crystal meth, alcohol and all substances of addiction has made my existence justified! I remain ready to fight fist to fist with this epidemic that so seeks my brothers and sisters. I am not convinced that my existence is in vain. I was created with determination and I was born set with an aim that was intentional. My life, my breath, my being, my vivacity, and vigor serves to build, to edify, to tear down, and to love in spite of the injustice that surrounds me day by day. My existence is not in vain and I stand unmoved from the position that I was predestined to hold. There are no lies, no daggers, no strongholds, no restraints, and no unbelievers of my capabilities that will keep me from excelling to the epitome of happiness, joy, and freedom because………. MY EXISTENCE IS NOT IN VAIN. …to be continued

“Versatility has always been a part of my DNA” Simply DelaJouere Fashion Magazine® 18

A name to be remembered, a service that is never forgotten…….

RayTHOMAS… TheBRAND CONSULTANCY

SDJ: What is Bronco radio? RT: Bronco-iRadio.com was established on October 10, 2010 (the work started in 2009 when I was given the opportunity to revamp a non-functioning student station that housed a broken studio board and one computer) and pre-launched into existence as the newest student organization on the campus of Fayetteville State University. Through Title III Grant funds, along with support from Student Affairs and the Communication Department we were able to design state-of-the-art studios which have the capabilities for hands-on learning, round table discussions, guest artists, and community support. Bronco-iRadio.com streams both audio and video over the internet. The On-Air content is provided by students for the local and global communities as I also host my syndicated “The RTVS Live®” (The RayThomas Variety Show Live) with student interns as co-host and on-the-job-training. Bronco-iRadio.com is operated by a management team of students and I supervise/advise and responsible for ALL teaching of broadcast related techniques, principles, Student positions not limited to: General Manager – Program Director/Brand Manager – Operations Manager – Business Manager/Traffic Director – Sales Manager – Production/ Creative Services Director – Marketing & Promotions Director – IT – Photography, Videography – A&R – Public Relations – Social Media – On-Air Performance. SDJ: You have established a successful career in modeling, media, and now radio…. How have you been able to make the smooth transition between the mediums? RT: Versatility has always been in my DNA. I’ve been exposed to many experiences and have always been a multi-tasker. I’ve found that time management is the key component to being successful in my different interests. SDJ: When/how did you start as a DJ - and what or who were your early passions and influences? RT: I fell in love with Radio Broadcasting when I was in high school at Cambridge Rindge & Latin back in 1983. We had a Radio Station (WRLS) and I would also do the morning announcements. I was also a multi sport Student-Athlete playing Basketball and Baseball. SDJ: What are currently your main challenges as a DJ? How do you overcome those challenges? RT: I wouldn’t consider myself a DJ as I’m more of a Personality that on a daily basis communicates to a global audience. Everyday I strive to be better than my last performance and I’m sponge like in regards to soaking up new information. That, I believe is a welcomed challenge as I strive to be an innovator in the medium of broadcasting. Evolution is a beautiful thing if one is willing to embrace the possibilities of what is ahead. My philosophy is FM (ForwardMoving). SDJ: When there's more music than one can possibly take in, it is becoming increasingly hard to know what constitutes an original and a remake anymore. What's your opinion on the importance of roots, traditions, respecting originals and sources? RT: I believe having a “Strong” foundation in whatever one’s life path or musical taste may be is important. You have to have understanding of where the music came from in order to an idea of where you would like to move it or take it to. Having a respect for ones past is an important component of becoming a true game changer/innovator or even curator of ones arena.

“Be In Tune With Your Purpose”

SDJ: Tell us a little about the Brand Consultancy, LLC. How did it come to fruition? RT: Over the years I’ve acquired many skill-sets and hence the launching of my company: RayTHOMAS TheBRAND Consultancy, LLC in 1993 and making it official in January 2011. The company specializes in: Broadcasting, Entertainment, Business, Audio/Voice Production and Photography. In broadcasting the focus is on Corporate/Independent operations and focus on Operations and Programming and Strategic Branding.

SDJ: How do you usually start preparing for a set? RT: Well, for my Radio Show, I’m constantly show prepping and feeding my mind with all kinds of information. Musically speaking, I listen to quite a bit of different genres of music as not to limit the exposure my global audience will be exposed to. SDJ: What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters? RT: In order to be the best at what you do, you must be willing to do all the things others aren’t willing to. SDJ: What are some of your other hobbies/interests/passion? RT: I grew up being a accomplished athlete in a variety of sports from: Basketball, Baseball, Football, Track & Field, Hockey, Tennis, Cycling and the list goes on. Some other hobbies are; Roller Skating, Martial Arts, Photography, Bowling and Personal Training to name a few. SDJ: What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic career? RT: That moment where I knew what I was destined to do was when I finally understood what my purpose was. That purpose was to “Help Others!” I’ve been doing that ever since. SDJ: Is there any particular piece of advice that you would like to share with other media pros that we have not mentioned? RT: Well, being that I’m a Consultant, if there are any media pros that are in need of my services please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me. SDJ: In closing, is there any miscellaneous wisdom that you would like to impart? Anything else that you would like to share? RT: I’d like to thank you for the opportunity to share a portion of my story with your readers. In parting, always be in tune with your “Purpose” you’ll find that you will lead a more (pun intended) Purpose Filled life!

oday the rich colors and designs of bowties have exploded. Men have assessed the significance of this great accessory to enhance the finishing touch of any ensemble. Riomar, one of the most significant voices in the fashion market is reaching out to the fashion connoisseur with a bold flair for designs and patterns. The brilliancy behind the icon is Mr. Mario K. iomar destined to be a household name.

SDJ: How and when did you get your start? MS: Riomar was birthed in 2012. The story is quite interesting. I was asked by a good friend to repair one of his bowties that was in need of mending. Upon completion of the repair, it was clear that the bowtie was more trendy and in much better condition. This sparked the inspiration to start designing my own line of bowties. I actually starting designing for myself which afforded me the opportunity to expand the business. SDJ: How did the name Riomar originate? MS: Riomar is quite simple. It’s my name; Mario spelled backwards. SDJ: Where and when did you receive your formal training? MS: My training is actually self-taught. All of my designs are custom, handmade originals with my customers in mind. SDJ: How many collections have you done thus far? MS: I have completed a myriad of different designs and styles. From the more simple palates, to the more exquisite bold and daring of bowtie connoisseurs, we can satisfy your taste. SDJ: As a fashion designer, what has been your greatest accomplishment thus far? MS: Many of my clients are business owners, music professionals and ministry leaders. My greatest accomplishment thus far is being afforded the opportunity to dress and style industry professionals, wedding parties and local celebrities.

SDJ: What/who is your inspiration as a designer? MS: I try to be very unique while catering to the desires of my clients. My bowties are designed with the consumer in mind while adding my own taste and esthetic to deliver an awesome accessory. Simply DelaJouere Fashion MagazineÂŽ

Riomar continued from page 32‌ Steve Harvey is also a true inspiration. He designs for all body types. SDJ: How would you describe your esthetic? MS: Edgy, out of the box. I try to ensure that I take a different spin on my designs. I do more contrasting than trying to match. SDJ: What do you do in your spare time when you are not designing? MS: Mostly music and marketing within the music industry. SDJ: Where do you see yourself 5-10 years from now in the industry? MS: My desire is to be able to sell my designs in stores and Haberdashery Gentleman’s Clothiers. SDJ: Is there any other information that you would like our readers to know? MS: Absolutely, be on the lookout for many more designs and accessories. Riomar is destined to fulfill purpose.
