BACKGROUND The Standard operates trendy boutique hotels in some of the world’s greatest cities, including two in Manhattan, New York – one in East Village and the other in the Meatpacking district.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? The 21-storey hotel has a young community vibe, enhanced by the lobby design and garden patio where guests and city dwellers can meet. It’s a green space in a city where spacious gardens are hard to come by, so it’s popular. You enter the tower though an original NYC tenement-style building before ascending to unparalleled views of Manhattan. There’s a constant buzz, but it’s not overwhelmingly busy.

WHERE IS IT? Located o Cooper Square in the cosy and charming East Village neighbourhood, known for its eccentricity and art scene. It’s surrounded by restaurants, cafés and community gardens and close to New York University’s campus too.

FOOD AND DRINK Street-side bistrostyle venue, Café Standard, features varieties of mushrooms grown on site, so menu highlights include mushroom toast and steak frites with wild mushroom Cognac butter. If you don’t like mushrooms, there are plenty of non-funghi options too. The Garden serves drinks and bites and o ers a raw bar, and tucked next to The Standard, NO BAR is a welcoming venue for drinks, bar snacks, DJs, live events and more. Room service is also available.

BUSINESS There’s a business centre and a limousine service. For the ultimate convenience, cooked-to-order breakfasts are available for a fee.

LEISURE There’s no gym, but the hotel has a partnership with Crunch Fitness, a full-service gym across the street, which guests can use. A walk around the Cooper Square neighbourhood is a must.

VERDICT It’s modern, hip and fun. It’s not traditional luxury, but The Standard East Village is a boutique hotel with excellent customer service, clean rooms and amazing NYC skyline views. It’s central and close to various Subway lines, and taxis are easy to hail too. This could easily become your hotel of choice every time you visit the Big Apple. Allyson Portee
