HOSTING THE SAUDI ARABIAN FOOTBALL TEAM IN DUBAI JA Jebel Ali olf Resort was thrilled to play host to Saudi Arabian football club Al Ittihad during their recent trip to ubai. While it was his first time staying at our resort, Al Ittihad head coach José uis Sierra immediately felt at home, as the Saudi club have used it as a training camp for years. The hotel is first class in every way, he said. The pitch we train on is first class and all the facilities help us prepare in the best way. The coaching staff also carried out training sessions at the resort’s JA Centre of Excellence, which provides top-grade sporting facilities for visiting teams. We have extensive training sessions between outdoors and the gym, Sierra added. The players need recuperation time as well, so we use the beach and other facilities here. All these will help us start the season in the best possible shape. It’s a fantastic place, not just for training but also to enjoy as a tourist destination. ast season, Al Ittihad won the prestigious Crown Prince Cup and the coaching staff have set their sights on yet another successful season for the club. We have the same ideas as last season, that the team always challenges for the titles, the head coach said. And at the same time we want to add new players, especially the new players that are being promoted from the youth team. Being here in
ubai and playing friendly matches will be positive in terms of studying the players we don’t know too well yet. At the end, in terms of challenging for the titles in Saudi, these things will benefit us. Al Ittihad is a big team that is expected to challenge all the time, Sierra said. After last year’s Crown Prince Cup win, we want to win it again and win even more competitions. We hope to win as many competitions as possible. On January 16, 018, Abu habi will host the Saudi Super Cup between Al Ittihad and rivals Al ilal. Will the Chilean coach be bringing his s uad to JA Jebel Ali olf Resort again or sure, without a doubt he said. The general coordinator of the first football team, Yousof Y. Al- ajjar, revealed: This is not the first time we’ve stayed at Jebel Ali. It’s a wonderful hotel. It’s probably the tenth year we have set up camp here. It’s got everything – the training pitches are excellent, as is the service, and one other benefit is that it’s far away from all the traffic and crowds. You could even train on the beach. I always encourage the management to stay here.

PROTECTING OUR BLUE PLANET JA Resorts otel’s Maldives-based marine biologist Stacy Mallaby reports on the some of the most pressing issues facing the marine world in the Maldives and how she and her team at JA Manafaru are working to generate awareness and restore life in the waters rom an environmental standpoint, 017 has been a busy year in Seatopia, our resort research centre, kicking off with Earth our on 5 March. or this celebration of our planet, I wanted to involve as many of our guests and associates as possible to raise the awareness of energy conservation and how to help the planet across the resort. rom 8pm to . 0pm, all non-essential lighting was turned off throughout guest and associate areas across JA Manafaru. Our guests were invited to take part in their villas and informed of this

shutdown and a special Earth our turndown service by our housekeeping team. Extending the event beyond the hour, reduced lighting remained for the evening as guests dined by candlelight at the resort’s various restaurants before enjoying a special unplugged acoustic set at Infinity Bar and Pool. The bar and beach area was lit solely with candles, tiki torches and a bonfire, while our guests relaxed on beach bean bags to take in the special music event. Overall, the night was a huge success and many of our guests complimented the event.

Earth Day 2017 at JA Manafaru, Maldives
This was soon followed by Earth ay on April. The occasion got under way bright and early with management and associate beach cleaning at JA Manafaru. This continued throughout the day as we conducted cleanings on our house reef and also a nearby uninhabited island named Medhafushi. Earth ay was a special event for Seatopia as it was the official launch of JA Manafaru’s coral adoption programme. uests had the uni ue opportunity to work alongside myself and plant coral fragments onto metal frames. Cool one, the resort’s children’s centre, even joined in on the action with some of our smaller guests planting corals. At the end of August, I planned a week-long beach and island cleaning event called Beach Walk for ature’. This cleaning effort focused on Medhafushi Island, as being completely uninhabited with no waste management facilities, the island suffers with a lot of marine debris being washed up onto the beach. Our goal was to rid Medhafushi of this debris and litter. Everyone got involved, including management, associates and our guests. We visited the island over the course of one week and together we collected over 50kg of garbage, ranging from plastic bottles to an infinite supply of shoes and ip ops. International Coastal Cleanup ay, which took place on 16 September, was another big feature on Seatopia’s calendar. This global celebration is the world’s biggest volunteer effort to protect the ocean and saw over 1 million people taking part in 016 alone. I am very proud that JA Manafaru was a part of this. Beach and reef cleaning were the events of the day. owever, the main activity, and probably the most important, is a community beach cleaning conducted at one of the local islands neighbouring JA Manafaru.

Many islands in the Maldives lack effective waste management and disposal facilities with only three islands out of a total of nearly 1, 00 having a recycling centre. ocal islanders face challenges in not only disposing of their own waste but also fighting the battle against garbage carried on ocean currents from all over the Indian Ocean region washing up on their shores. ere at JA Manafaru, we have the ability and means to recycle and dispose of garbage such as this. ast year associates and guests were welcomed to Mulhadhoo, a large island to the east of JA Manafaru with a population of about 50 people, by the council and islanders to join forces and help clear the beaches. This year, we also took our efforts to another island for our second community clean-up. In order to support all of these clean up events, I secured a partnership with Parley, an initiative which works throughout the Maldives to collect ocean plastic, encourage participation in clean-ups and offer education on the harmful impacts on marine life and ourselves. They promote avoidance of plastic in everyday life (particularly single use plastics such as bottles, bags, and straws), interception of plastic in the environment, and redesign of plastic as a product through support and research into new technologies and developments in plastic production to develop more sustainable solutions. Marine biologists in the Maldives such as myself conduct much of the collection and it’s a great way for resorts, their guests and locals to get involved in this environmental crisis. To further increase awareness and bring the issue of marine debris to the masses, Parley have teamed up with public figures such as Stella McCartney and

Pharrell Williams, and are partnered with Adidas who use the collected ocean plastic to produce a range of sports shoes, clothing and football kits for big name clubs Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. In addition to the collaboration with Parley, I’ve also been fortunate to secure collaborations with Manta Trust, the Olive Ridley Project, and Shark Watch. Manta Trust documents and tracks the movement of mighty manta rays all over the world, providing them with information on spatial and population demographics, such as history and reproduction cycles. I now manage the Manta Trust database for aa Alifu Atoll (the island on which our resort is located) reporting on all sightings and identifying individuals from the spot pattern on the underside of their bodies. We actually have one confirmed sighting of a completely new individual to the Maldivian manta ray population, and think those seen here may be a subpopulation that stay close by from June to October, and then come to feed in the plankton-rich waters from ovember to May. The Olive Ridley project documents and tracks the movements of sea turtles, in addition to actively rescue those entangled in abandoned fishing gear. ata about the abandoned fishing gear is recorded (mesh size, material it’s made from and colour of the net) and this is used to help locate the origin of the net and develop new fishing laws and regulations. Similarly to Manta Trust, the Olive Ridley Project also identifies turtles by

using the pattern of scales on either side of their head. Their work in the Maldives re uires good planning and logistics in order to get turtles to rehabilitation centres for much needed medical care after entanglement. To facilitate this, they have also partnered up with Trans Maldivian Airways who transport the turtles to where they need to go on scheduled resort ights. On 1 June, we had our first ying turtle, aiydha, who was rescued from a nearby beach and sent to a turtle rehabilitation centre in orth Malé Atoll. Shark Watch records the sightings and numbers of sharks seen throughout the Maldives to determine if the shark fishing ban (introduced here in 010) is successful in not only protecting shark populations but also maintaining the health of the reefs. All of these projects are uni ue as they rely on citizen science to be successful. ere at Seatopia, I encourage all of our guests to report sightings of these animals and if they have photographs, to share them with me. If they have spotted and identified a manta ray or turtle, they will then have the opportunity to name it and I will update them if it is seen again in this atoll or somewhere else entirely. I’m also conducting community outreach sessions at various schools and islands throughout the atoll in an effort to highlight the importance of the marine environment, threats facing the oceans and reefs in today’s society, and what we can do in our daily lives to have a more positive effect on the environment and to protect it. This initiative began with a talk at aa Alifu Education Centre, hidhdhoo with rade and 10 students focusing on marine litter and debris in celebration of World Oceans ay. This was a great success and students and teachers alike were very interested. I will be visiting other schools throughout the atoll and act as almost a supplement to their current marine awareness curriculum, giving students the chance to uestion and learn about issues from someone who works in the field. The aim is to not only raise awareness on marine issues but to also create the interest and drive to seek out more sustainable ways of living in this island nation.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE HOTEL? It really is a fascinating and exciting role as it gives me the opportunity to be of assistance to our lovely guests from all over the world. It’s my job to help to further boost their stay by recommending various adventurous activities and experiences to make their holiday a more exciting one.
WHAT DOES A WORKING DAY USUALLY ENTAIL? Many of our guests have travelled a long distance to spend their time in ubai, so it’s important for us to meet and excel their expectations. My aim is to always make them feel at home from the moment they arrive. I’m always happy to assist our guests with whatever they might need, from booking activities for kids to advising on the best dining spots in the city. I also manage my team by organising their schedules and helping to increase their morale whenever needed.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE AREAS WITHIN THE HOTEL? There are so many the restaurants and swimming pool area are brilliant, but first and foremost it has to be the lobby area of the hotel as it’s where I am based and am able to interact with our guests and put my skills into practice.
WORKING AS A CONCIERGE FOR A HOTEL, YOU MUST BE VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ON DUBAI’S BEST SIGHTS. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TOP RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VISITORS DURING THEIR TRIP? It all comes down to each guest’s individual interests and whether they are celebrating a special occasion. In my eyes, every guest is a VIP so I want to help them get the most out of their trip. As we all know, ubai is such a fun city with something on offer for everyone, including adventure tours, theme parks, water sports, shopping malls and so

much more. Some of my top suggestions include a visit to the world’s tallest building Burj alifa and then a trip to the older part of the city where many of the souks, art galleries and museums are located.

It’s full of life and there are always dynamic activities happening, which create wonderful memories for our guests and also me personally. The towering Ain ubai (otherwise known as the ubai Eye – a giant erris wheel with amazing views over the city) is currently under construction and is sure to make this part of town even more exciting for our guests.
