WELCOME

A note from JA A very warm welcome to the latest edition of Discover. The last few months have been a whirlwind of exciting events and project developments, such as our new Sri Lanka JA Eclipse Beach Resort set to open in 2017 – which you can read all about in this issue (page 18). Over the summer we were honoured to receive a number of awards and guest indorsed accolades for our properties both in the UAE and Indian Ocean. These included World Travel Awards – The ‘Seychelles Leading Luxury Hotel Villa’, for Enchanted Island Resort, ‘Middle East’s Leading Family Resort’ for JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort (Dubai), ‘Middle East Leading Serviced Apartments’ for JA Oasis Beach Tower (Dubai) and the ‘Indian Oceans Leading Hotel Suite’ alongside the ‘Maldives Leading Hotel Suite’ for JA Manafaru, Maldives. We were also delighted to receive a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from TripAdvisor for Enchanted Island Resort in the Seychelles, which is a true testament to our guest experience on the idyllic island. As the UAE’s hottest months are now behind us, it’s time to enjoy all the city has to offer: from our incredible beach destinations and suites (page 10), to the top Friday brunches in town (page 28) and all the hidden gems of Downtown Dubai (page 24). With the wedding season in full swing, we’ve also rounded-up the most beautiful locations to tie the knot at our JA properties in the UAE and Indian Ocean and asked our onsite wedding coordinator to share his advice on successful planning (page 32). If you’re looking for a healthy few months ahead, find out about the return of our popular yoga retreat at Hatta Fort Hotel (page 51) and Speedflex, the latest fitness craze to takeover Dubai (page 52). I hope this issue offers you all the insider tips and spots to enjoy while you stay with us. We always love to hear from you, so please feel free to send us any holiday snaps, stories or comments to – discover@ jaresorts.com or follow us online facebook.com/jaresorts twitter @jaresorts instagram.com/jaresorts JA was thrilled to sponsor the Projecx Waterboys for the Amsterdam Rugby Sevens. The team played a fantastic game against international teams and took home the prestigious Heineken Boot trophy. Our congratulations to all the players.

CONTRIBUTORS Favourite travel destination: I love Sri Lanka. I used to live there and adore the beaches, the food and the buzz of Colombo. Holiday packing essential: My Aeropress! I can’t live without my portable coffeemaker. Top travel tip: Before you go, ask everyone you know for contacts who live at your destination, and then get their insider info. My favourite travel destination: I enjoy exploring the UAE, from taking staycations in the city to off the beaten track road trips to oman and Hatta. My holiday packing essential: A great swimsuit and comfortable walking shoes for discovering new places by foot. Top travel tip: Book in advance! I always do my research to find the best foodie spots and live music venues, which often get very busy, so definitely make reservations to avoid disappointment. My perfect trip: I love travelling and never turn down the opportunity to go somewhere new. I’m happy, as long as I have a great travel companion, a new book and an iPod full of my top tunes. Favourite travel destination: Tokyo is amazing, but I also enjoy going to Sri Lanka – beaches, history and oodles of culture, right there, in front of you and bathed in sun. Holiday packing essential: I travel so light it’s ridiculous. Places are different. But there’s always something, or someone, to wash your clothes. Better than lugging a giant case around, or even thinking about it, any day. Top travel tip: Experiencing the world is to experience differences. To know people best, focus on our similarities. Life is a shared experience. My perfect trip: I’m a city boy so there are ideally plenty of people around – including my wife, of course – and plenty of history, culture and preferably some hopping nightlife to boot.

HOW TO‌

BANISH JETLAG

PHOTO: JOHN HONG/THELICENSINGPROJECT.COM

Beat the fatigue when travelling between time zones with these easy travel tips

The secret to defeating the dreaded jetlag begins on the plane. While it might be tempting to kick back in the air with a few glasses of your favourite tipple, frequent flyers recommend sticking to lots of water and herbal tea. Snack smart and forgo the salty inflight meals that can leave you feeling heavy. Pick up a healthy wrap and salad at the terminal and load up on fresh berries and almonds. 8

Pop in your earplugs and snuggle down for a powernap. If you struggle with sleeping in the air, take the time to enjoy the tech-free environment and catch up on your favourite top TV shows or new films on the inflight entertainment. Avoid sleeping pills as they can leave you feeling drowsy on arrival. Be sure to move around on the plane when possible. Take a stroll up and down the aisle to stretch your legs.

Once settled and unpacked at the hotel, go for a swim or gentle jog on the beach to shake off the journey. Light exercise will help get your blood flowing and ward off any bloating from the flight. Adjusting to a new time zone can take a few nights at your new destination. Plan your movements to help you gradually shift your body block and save the intensive sightseeing for a few days into the trip. magazine

48 Hours

in MALÉ

Most travellers use Malé, capital of the stunning Maldives, as a stepping-stone to the country’s many resorts. But there’s more than enough in this mercantile gem to keep one happy for hours. Here’s how to spend 48 of them well…

A

s home to almost half of all Maldivans, Malé is by far the atoll nation’s most important city. Hundreds of years as a fishing and trading post have lent the capital a bright, bustling aura at odds with the laid-back attitude of the rest of the country. That said, it’s still a city surrounded by breathtakingly blue ocean and lined with historic buildings – a soulless metropolis it most certainly isn’t. Malé, and the Maldives, has grown up under a variety of ethnicities and religions – from Sri Lankans and Indians in prehistory, to Buddhists, Brits, Dutch, Portuguese and Arabs, the latter of whom gave the country its Islamic faith, architecture and even some of its linguistic heritage. Malé’s crushed coral, tile-roofed homes are iconic of island life, while a variety of mosques, museums and markets reflect Maldives’ fascinating location at a crossroads of great empires. 15

JOURNEY among the tight-wound streets, though, and you’ll find more than enough to keep you fascinated for two days.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS

THE HARBOUR OF THE CAPITAL, MALÉ, MALDIVES.

GETTING THERE

Any visitor to the Maldives will arrive via Malé International Airport (MLE), located on Hulhule Island near the capital. It is surely one of the planet’s most gorgeous descents – and the connections aren’t bad either. MLE hosts the biggest seaplane operations in the world, and it’s one of these that you’ll need to get if you’re headed to or from the JA Manafaru resort, winner of countless awards. Direct travellers from MLE to Malé, meanwhile, can hop on an airport 16

ferry, of which there are dozens daily that leave at intervals from ten to 30 minutes at minimal cost. There are also speedboat services, in case you’ve developed that rare condition in Maldivan vacationers – a hurry. Don’t expect a languid, coastal town on the southern shore of Kaafu Atoll, however: Malé has long been a prized location with little space, and it shows. The building trend for years has been skyward, and a cluster of white-lined blocks juts out of the sand like a bonsai Miami. Weave

Islam shapes almost all aspects of life in the Maldives – it became an Islamic Republic three years after the end of British rule, in 1968 – and good places to start sightseeing in the capital are Malé’s two most famous mosques: the Old Friday Mosque and the Grand Friday Mosque and Islamic Centre. The former, known locally as Hukuru Miskiiy, dates from 1656, at which point the Maldives had already been an Islamic region for up to 500 years. Its coral walls and Quranic carvings are an understated marvel, while its short, muscular minaret is different to most you’ll see across the Muslim world. The Grand Friday Mosque could barely be more different, having been erected in 1984 at the behest of former president Mammon Abdul Gayoom, who served from 1978 to 2008. The Islamic Centre of which it’s a part was named after the 16th century Maldivan hero Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, who defeated the Portuguese with his brothers Ali and Hasan. His tomb is located at another mosque near the central Sultan Park. Opposite lies Muliaage, the President’s Palace, a brightly-coloured building dating to 1914, and the National Museum, which, despite a 2012 break-in during which 30 ancient Buddhist stone carvings were destroyed, still houses an impressive array of items from the Maldives’ past.

MARKET CAPITAL

For a real look into daily life in Malé, you’ll need to visit the city’s many markets. Fish is at the top of the local roster, and the main Fish Market, located on the ribboning Boduthakurufaanu Magu road, is a heady mix of sights, sounds and live-action gutting. The latter might not be your favourite tourist activity, but an amble through the market’s tight-wound stalls is exciting and eyecatching. Visit in the mid-afternoon magazine

when the bartering really steps up. If you’re more in the mood for fruit and vegetables, there’s plenty on offer for you too. Malé’s bustling produce market comprises stacks of coconuts, bananas, yams, nuts and just about anything bright and juicy. And there are also markets catering to artisans hawking locally made arts and crafts, for something unique to take home. There are shops and cinemas, and even the National Stadium, home to the national football side, the ‘Red Snappers’, should you be around on game day. But most activities in the small island city are to be

magazine

found offshore in the guise of a wide selection of dive and surf trips. The Sea Explorers Dive School, a short walk from the stadium, is Malé’s best-known.

EATING OUT

Whether you’ve explored Malé on foot or in the sea, there’s plenty of good food on offer. Many of the city’s most reputable upmarket eateries focus on southeast Asian cuisine, and places such as Sala Thai, Symphony and Belle Amie Bistro prepare traditional cuisine with the city’s abundance of fresh seafood. For a real taste of the Maldives, head to Irudhashu Hotaa,

where the fish curries and traditional hedhikaa, a local samosa variant, are dished out in their hundreds after prayers. Newport, situated on the beachfront, is an eclectic mix of European, Middle Eastern and local fare, and offers good coffee for the tired traveller. The Jazz Café, contrary to its evening-oriented name, is an excellent breakfast spot and a cozy retreat from the nearby jetties and harbours. Which is useful, because that hustle-bustle is the way you’ll be returning to the JA Manafaru, or home, after a packed two days in one of the world’s quaintest capitals.

Sri Lanka S

ri Lanka is – no question – on the rise. Tourists are rediscovering the charms of the island nation, which has beautiful beaches, exotic animals, verdant highlands and ancient monuments, all contained in an area about the size of Ireland. Big it isn’t, but it’s home to an array of things to see and do out of all proportion to its size. The big draw for most visitors, deservedly, is the beaches. Sri Lanka’s beaches, especially those on the south and east coasts, are world-beating, with all the soft sand, lush vegetation and clear turquoise waters that one could ask for. So it makes perfect sense that JA Resorts & Hotels is due to open a new resort in Sri Lanka in 2017 on one of these spectacular beaches.

JOURNEY Kathiraveli, which lies between the cities of Trincomalee and Batticaloa on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast, was chosen for its natural beauty and will be home to the first ever luxury resort in the area. Imagine arriving by seaplane to see a collection of three-bedroom villas and private pools laid out on a worldclass beach backed by natural greenery. Tempted? Read on…

TREETOP SUITES AND PRIVATE POOLS Colourful fishing boats, blue skies, white sand and palm trees: that postcard-perfect scene will be the showcase for 108 luxury suites and villas running along 450 metres of beachfront and forming a luxurious retreat under the name of JA Eclipse Beach Resort. Paying tribute to its stunning coastal location, water is an integral part of the resort’s design, incorporated everywhere from free-form swimming pools scattered throughout to a lazy river trailing its way through the resort to various water features and private villa pools. The villas themselves also offer

multiple bedrooms (with canopied king-sized beds) and outdoor rainfall showers, but guests can choose to elevate themselves in the resort’s modern tree-top suites instead, from which the views out to sea are unsurpassed. Luxury – this is a five-star resort after all – is the key component here, and every detail of the suites and villas, from the Sri Lankan-inspired furniture to the lavish bedding, has been carefully chosen.

WATERSPORTS

Thanks to the beautifully clear waters of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka’s developing itself as a top destination for watersports (Arugam Bay and Hikkaduwa in particular are starting to pop up on surfers’ radars), and JA Eclipse 20

Beach Resort will have its own fully equipped watersports centre. This will include a PADI dive centre where qualified instructors will take guests scuba diving, and it will even offer nitrox diving, which means deeper, longer dives. For guests who prefer to stay above the water, whale-watching tours run regularly – Sri Lanka’s coasts are one of the best in the world for spotting the enormous blue whale. Parasailing, wakeboarding, water-skiing and jet skiing will also be offered, allowing guests to spend as much time getting active in the ocean as they do lounging at one of the resort’s four main swimming pools.

FAMILY TRAVEL

Vacationing together as a family is important, but there are moments when every member of the family wants to do something different. The JA Eclipse Beach Resort has plans to keep kids of all ages entertained with clubs and activities, including a crèche that will babysit children from four months to three years old when parents need a break. The ‘Coolzone’ is tailored toward children from four to 12 years of age, and older teens can hang out and meet new friends at the ‘Chillzone’. For adults, the spa and wellness centre can serve as a wonderful retreat and opportunity for some well deserved “me time”, with a variety of therapeutic and beauty treatments. Before a massage or facial in one of the peaceful rooms designed in tropical style, guests can meditate in the herb-infused relaxation garden, or luxuriate in the hydro pools, sauna and steam room. Older kids may want to scuba dive or parasail, and adventurous families with a sense of humour can pile onto a “banana boat” – a long inflated tube pulled through the waves behind a boat. The rapid twists and turns often land riders in the water – luckily, the ocean here is warm! Guests will be spoilt for choice when it comes to meals, as the resort is set to have eight distinct dining options. Romantic evening for two? Visit the wine cave for a relaxing pre-dinner drink before sampling Sri Lankan specialties and Asian fusion dishes at the White Orchid. Family meal, post-swim? Meet up at the pizzeria, or try the beach bar and grill. Lively drinks with friends? Head to Eclipse for music and perfectly crafted evening cocktails.

AN ETHICAL RESORT

As part of JA’s policy of supporting its associates as much as possible, a selection of Sri Lankan members of staff may be given the opportunity to return home to work at the new resort. The company will also be hiring heavily from the local population, bringing tourism jobs to a part of magazine

The convenient location of the JA Eclipse Beach Resort means easy access not just to the coast, but to the country’s lush tea plantations, leopardspotting safaris, and historic sights. Discover the beating heart of the city away from the masses

igger is certainly seen as better in Downtown Dubai and DIFC. Dubbed ‘The Centre of the Now’, these neighbourhoods are home to the world’s tallest building, The Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Fountain, the world’s highest performing fountain, and The Dubai Mall, an enormous retail haven with thousands of shops and restaurants spanning over 5 million sq.ft. But there is plenty more to see and do surrounding these blockbuster tourist destinations. Here, we share the hidden gems you ought to discover now…

24

First of all, visit The Dubai Design District, otherwise known as d3, a new creative neighbourhood to be filled with a mix of office space, major brand flagship stores and small boutiques with galleries, workshops and artists’ studios. While the project is still under construction, it’s set to be the new hub for the region’s design talent. Guests are welcome and it’s well worth a visit to see what’s up-and-coming in the Middle East’s art and fashion industry. (dubaidesigndistrict.com) Culture vultures will also be pleased to see a plethora of cutting-edge art galleries in this part of the city. The

region exhibits a huge variety of established Middle Eastern artists, sculptors and emerging talent. If you fancy adding to your collection, or simply browsing the incredible creative displays, head to Gate Village in DIFC where you will find Cuadro Gallery (cuadroart.com), The Empty Quarter (theemptyquarter.com) and Opera Gallery (operagallery.com). While hailing a taxi might seem like the easy route, why not work up your appetite (or burn off the previous night’s feast), and rent a bike. Fun for the whole family, this is our favourite way to see the city. Byky (bykystations.com) has stations set magazine

JOURNE Y

up in various areas around town, including Downtown Dubai. Prices start at Dhs15 for 30 minutes. There are cafés dotted on nearly every street corner in DIFC and Downtown Dubai. If you’re travelling with little ones, treat them to lunch at Pizzaro (pizzaro. me) on Emaar Boulevard, a local favourite serving some of the best pizza in the city. For dinner make your way to DIFC, an upmarket business district and home to many of the Emirate’s top-tier restaurants, including Gaucho, Zuma and the popular Le Petit Maison – a highend French restaurant lovingly nicknamed ‘LPM’ by Dubai’s socialites. If you fancy a taste of the Middle East, try Em Sherif (emsherif.com), a fine dining experience based around authentic Lebanese cuisine. The jewel-box décor, glamorous crowd and delicious food have made this a new hotspot in town. If you’re after a more casual scene, we recommend Zaroob magazine

(zaroob.com), a quirky eatery with fun interiors and live cooking stations rustling up Arabic street dishes with a twist. As the sun sets and the palm trees lining Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard are illuminated by thousands of twinkling fairy lights, Downtown Dubai is a spectacular setting to while away an evening.

THE WEDDING PLANNER

W

hile throwing a wedding is an enjoyable experience, it often comes with the stress of planning such a momentous event. From menus to try, cakes to pick and seating plans to arrange, the list of to-do’s can seem never-ending. On hand to take the stress out of the planning process, meet Rijan Sabordo, JA’s Wedding Planner. Here, he opens up his little black bridal book and reveals his expert tips to organising your special day. “Wedding planning is one of the most challenging parts of the hospitality industry. You need to be creative, good at listening, attentive and very patient. I always tell my clients to sit back and relax as I’m there to take on the responsibility and help them realise their dream wedding – a very memorable day which only happens once!”

The BesT DaTe Once your fiancé pops the question you need to start thinking about the ideal date. It’s important to get married at a time that also works for your family and friends. Decide on at least three preferred dates in case one is not available at your selected venue.

Venue Armed with your dates, next it’s onto the location. Ask about the availably upfront to avoid any disappointment. The venue should possess the quality of your requirements. JA Resorts & Hotels offer a brilliant variety of options for weddings; including blessings, dinner receptions and after parties.

RsVP Once you have the date and venue fixed, send out your invitations as early as possible, this will ensure your guests mark the event in their calendar and you can start finalising numbers.

the design, flavour and how many layers you require. You want to make sure that there is enough for all of your bridal party to enjoy a slice.

ConCePTualising Pick out your decorations; this will include the signage, table plan board, chair bow colours, an arch for your ceremony and the lightings for the venue. Decide on the flowers that you want to use, as some florals are seasonal and will not be available. Also select stationaries such as table numbers, guest name cards and your guest book. For party favours, look for something personal that reflects your love story.

The PhoTogRaPhy Once you have confirmed your photographer, ask them to visit the venue to check out the best spots for your photo session. To avoid delaying your event on the day, decide on how many hours you will need them for, so that you do not end up paying extra for unnecessary pictures.

When deciding the menu, think about what will be enjoyable for different tastebuds. Check over your guest list to gauge what kind of beverage package to go for: this will also help bring down costs. For the cake, select magazine

Ask your hair and make-up artist to do a free trial in the lead-up to your big day to avoid any botch-ups or allergies to certain beauty products. When it comes to creating your wedding gown, ask the designer or

enTeRTainMenT A great band or musician will add fun to your wedding. Ask them to interact with your guests and encourage everyone to hit the dance floor!

The insider’s guide to navigating Dubai’s top shopping destinations

ith dozens of malls, boutiques and souks selling everything you could possibly imagine, from designer goods to fine jewels and toys, Dubai has become synonymous with shopping. The region’s expansive malls, with their indoor ski slopes, ice-rinks and aquariums look more like luxurious theme parks than shopping spots. But don’t be fooled, these blockbuster retail havens house hundreds of shops to indulge in a little retail therapy. Credit cards at the ready!

The Dubai Mall ArguAbly the most famous of the malls, largely thanks to its enormous square footage, The Dubai Mall is a bustling tourist attraction in the heart of the city. Ranked one of the biggest malls in the world, this retail complex could keep you entertained for weeks. Start with the Dubai Fountain performance, an elaborate water display showcased on the 30-acre Burj Khalifa Lake with choreographed water jets shooting as high as 500 ft. The show occurs every 30 minutes from 6pm till 11pm daily. The mall also has an ice-rink and aquarium making it a great day out for the entire family. 38

While you’d be hard-pressed to visit all the shops in just one outing, there will be something for everyone, from high-end designer stores such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton, to stylish boutiques Symphony and S*uce – fashion fans will be spoilt for choice! There are plenty more retail options for others, selling everything from books and music to tech and jewellery. refuel: Stop in for a healthy bite at Social House. Offering fresh juice, rustic flat bread pizzas, super-food salads and a handful of delicious Asian dishes, this buzzy café will suit all taste buds. the detAils: Visit thedubaimall.com magazine

ENJO Y This enormous mall is one of the busiest shopping destinations in Dubai. With hundreds of stores, dining outlets and entertainment attractions, Mall of the Emirates is a brilliant place for a fun day out. The real selling point is the indoor ski resort. An artificial wintery wonderland with ice sculptures, live penguins, a toboggan run, five ski runs (the longest being 400m) and a Freestyle Zone with jumps and rails – you’ll feel as though you’re swishing down the slopes of the French Alps. On the shopping front, this mall has all the international heavy-hitters, including Topshop, H&M and Zara, as well as sports shops, children’s wear and much more. refuel: St. Tropez Bistro offers a quiet retreat away from the heaving shops. Enjoy a menu full of French classics such as bouillabaise, duck confit and moules marinieres in an elegant and relaxed setting. The deTails: Visit malloftheemirates.com

Mall of the Emirates Ibn Batutta

JA Resorts & Hotels offer free shuttle bus services for guests to a number of malls and tourist attractions in Dubai; including Mall of the Emirates, The Dubai Mall, Ibn Battuta Mall and much more. Available from JA Ocean View Hotel, JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort and JA Ocean Beach Tower. Contact the hotel’s concierge service for more information.

The elaboraTe design and exotic architecture steal the show at this shopping mall. Inspired by the 14thcentury Arab explorer Ibn Battuta, the décor traces his travels in six themed courts (China, Persia, Egypt, India, Tunisia, Andalusia). There are more than 200 stores, including department store Debenhams, plus a plethora of fashion and lifestyle boutiques. As the sprawling shopping complex is all on one level, the mall provides golf carts to transport you to your next stop. There is also an IMAX cinema showing all the latest films. refuel: While there is a food court with over 16 outlets, we recommend grabbing a bite at Lemonade. SKINCARE

101

We sit down with Noella Gabriel, Director of Product & Treatment Development at Elemis, the chosen skincare brand of JA spas, to find out her tips on tackling summer skin woes

WHAT MAKES A SUN CREAM ANTI-AGEING? Noella: There are two types of sun screens; those that just contain an SPF which normally end up being cheap and cheerful, and those that are treatment sun care products which also help to ensure the skin is kept highly moisturised and nourished with good protection. An anti-ageing sunscreen is a synergy of good anti-oxidants. THERE ARE A LOT OF SLIMMING AND CELLULITE 48

SUN CREAMS ON THE MARKET. ARE THESE DIFFERENT TO NORMAL CELLULITE CREAMS AND HOW DO THEY WORK? Noella: Personally, being in Product Development for many years, I find these slimming sun creams to be very gimmicky and to only provide the client with an experience without results. Who wants an anti-cellulite cream activated to increase its heat while sunbathing in a very hot climate! magazine

RETREA T What can you do to take the redness doWn from sunburn? Noella: Burning from lack of protection is the most common sign of skin damage in the summer. Once you get sunburnt then sunbathing is over! Skin can appear sore, red and hot to touch as the epidermis has been burnt, damaged and stripped of any oil content, which is why it can feel tight and very dry. The focus is now about reducing redness, preparing skin and to prevent blistering and peeling. I would highly recommend the Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath and Daily Redness Relief, which contains an anti-inflammatory phyto-amino bio-complex to help reduce heat and speed up healing. Milks and oils are great to apply as an aftersun to replenish the skin as quickly as possible. The skin underneath (your new skin) will be much more vulnerable to sensitivity and sun exposure so protection with SPF is key. If you are caught out, I would also recommend booking into a spa for a facial as this would be an excellent treatment to top up on Elemis Daily moisture for the skin.

Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath

Redness Relief

PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

Elemis’ philosophy is to encourage the client to body brush daily and to massage an oil or cream into the area depending on the time of day. The benefit of moving that area with the hands is very powerful as it stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage improving skin tone and texture.

Elemis Liquid Layer

if you have sensitive skin, What sun cream ingredients help and What should you avoid? The sun can cause sensitivity so a client who has this skin condition will know not to expose her face to the sun without good protection. Another golden rule is to always wear a hat. Once you

do elemis offer a sun product for eyes and if not – is there a reason Why you shouldn’t have sunscreen in your daily eye cream? Noella: We recently launched Elemis the Elemis Liquid Layer, which Pro Collagen gives our client a choice when Marine Cream it comes to using an SPF. This was one of the reasons why we also developed Pro-Collagen Marine Cream and launched it without an SPF. By having an SPF 30 as a separate product it can be used when necessary.

magazine

aggravate sensitivity, e.g. high colour, broken veins, it takes a lot of daily management to get this skin condition back under control. are there any sunbathing rules you should adhere to if you have sensitive skin? Never bathe in midday sun, choose early morning or mid-afternoon to help you get a healthy glow without the burn. a lot of sun creams are going very high factor. hoW do these offer more protection than the standard 15-25 spf? Noella: It simply means using more titanium dioxide to enable a product to have a measured SPF. Elemis’ decision is to not go above 30 as this is proven to give enough protection without a high cost to the skin. What causes prickly heat? Noella: Sometimes it can be a reaction between the product, the heat and sweating or just a very sensitive skin having had very fast exposure to the sun without being prepped. For this type of client I would highly recommend to prep the skin by using a Tan Accelerator 14 days prior to sun exposure. It is normally very fair skins that experience a severe sensitivity to the sun. 49

Exercise 4-5 times a week, even if it’s just a 20-minute walk with the dogs. Anything is better than nothing. An hour workout is only 4% of your day, so make time for it! Ensure you get a minimum of six hours sleep. This will ensure your body has enough time to recover from your busy schedule! Don’t eat too late at night; ideally eat at least two hours prior to sleeping. As soon as you wake up drink 500ml-1 litre of water to ensure you body is fully hydrated. Drink a minimum of 3.5 litres of H2O a day. In Dubai people don’t drink enough, we live in 30 plus degrees heat where we’re constantly loosing water. When our body is perspiring and exposed in the air conditioning for numerous hours, it causes us to dehydrate. Therefore, we need to stay on top of our hydration. Allow yourself to have at least one rest day and cheat day a week. As long as you’re good the other six days it’s fine to have a day off for your body to recover. Just don’t over indulge on food! Always eat breakfast as it truly is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast will start you off for the rest of your schedule. My favourite breakfast is oats with almond milk and a handful of blueberries – a slow release of energy that keeps me full till lunch! Eat a palmful of protein with every meal. Do a mixture when it comes to exercising, you want to avoid boredom and stick to your healthy life style. I love doing Speedflex, swimming, running, weights, netball and body pump!

SOUL

Do you still get exciteD about performing live? Oh absolutely. Every night is a new show with new fans who I want to make happy. Do you like to improvise your sets? Every show has a different set list so we try to tailor the show for each audience. We don’t do a huge amount of improvisation, but there is some. When you have a huge band you have to have a plan. you were in the uae earlier this year for the Dubai Jazz festival; DiD you meet your fellow performers sting anD James blunt? Yeah, I’ve met both of those guys before too. I grew up listening to The Police, of course, and I’ve done events with him a few times. He’s still one of the best singers around. 56

what Do you talk about – music? Sure. We usually don’t get to see each other because we’re all doing our own thing and we’re on the road a lot. So it’s cool to catch up with musicians and talk about music, travel, whatever is happening at the time. Do you ever ask for autographs? Ha, no. Occasionally I ask for a photo. But I know what’s it like to get asked for photos all the time, so I try not to bother other celebrities with that. you won an oscar for your song glory in the film selma. what Do you think of the movie? I think it’s incredible. I studied Martin Luther King’s life, so seeing his life portrayed on screen was very moving for me, and I was happy to be a part of that film.

With a supermodel wife, a host of hit songs and an Oscar for Best Original Song in the movie Selma, American musician John Legend is at the top of his game. Here, the superstar soul singer discusses music, movies and reaching his peak…

for big gigs, such as the super bowl, Do you feel more anticipation? Yeah, it’s different to my usual show and I get a little more nervous performing at the Super Bowl or Grammys than I would in a normal show. Firstly, you only get to perform one song. You have one moment to make that impact, you know? If I’m doing my own show I have 90 minutes to give a whole experience. In a twominute performance you have to focus and give your best two minutes. you collaborate a lot with fellow musicians anD singers – what Do you enJoy about collaborations? Music is made better by collaboration. I like to collaborate because it’s interesting to see other people’s magazine

It pushes you in different directions. How does it Happen – do you go tHrougH managers or do you get in toucH personally? It’s a bit of both. Even if you know an artist, if you want to schedule something you kind of have to go through their manager. I usually love an initial conversation with the artist, then we leave it to the managers to find out when we can do it. Logistically it can get pretty difficult but we make it work. wHat’s tHe first step in a collaboration? When I’m writing for another artist, I like to talk to them about what they’re going through and what they want to say in their song. What stories do they want to tell? you recently recorded a song witH sam smitH. How was tHis experience? Yeah, we recorded a song called Lay Me Down. It’s a remake of a song from his album. My agent actually sent me his music before he came out in the States. He said, check out this guy, he’s going to be huge. And he ended up being huge! He has a unique, special voice. He’s put out some great songs and I’m happy for his success. let’s talk about all of me – Have you figured out wHy it was sucH a Huge Hit? I think, lyrically, people relate to the message of the song. It’s universal and personal at the same time. I think people really connected to the fact that I was writing it about my wife and our relationship, but they could apply it to their own relationships. Melody matters too of course. But the song is very simple: just piano and vocal, and that makes it genre-less. It can play on any radio station. magazine

did you tell your wife (supermodel cHrissy teigen) you were writing a song about Her? No, I didn’t go into the studio thinking I’m going to write a song about us. I wrote a couple of songs that day, but All Of Me stood out. it’s going to be tHe song tHat millions of couples cHoose

That’s pretty cool. do you now feel pressure to follow it up witH a bigger song? Well, it’s pretty close to impossible for the next song to be bigger, but hopefully I can continue to make songs that have an impact. I’m never going to top All Of Me, it was one of the biggest songs in the world last year. are you ok tHat you migHt Have reacHed your peak witH tHat track? CITY GUIDES

LiTTLe BLaCk Book:

DUBAI Rosemin manji,

ayman Fakoussa,

The best part about living in the UAE… For me Dubai is the best of East meets West. I love that there is a direct flight from here to anywhere you want to go, so it’s easy to visit my family – even for a few days for some home cooking! Shop: I love Internet shopping – matchesfashion.com is my top hit. I always get excited to open their beautiful marble-printed box when it gets delivered. Spa: Vanilla Salon, Palm Jumeriah. I live on the Palm, so it’s like my second home. I actually call them my glam team! They always make me look photo ready. party: Music Hall is lots of fun. I love anywhere with great live music. relax: One of the most enjoyable parts of the region is that there are so many wonderful hotels close by. I have enjoyed weekend staycations in all parts of the UAE, when I need to escape in Dubai I visit JA Jebel Ali Golf Resort. Culture: Each year I look forward to Art Dubai. The city becomes electric and it’s such a well organised event.

The best part about living in the UAE… I used to always think that I’d only ever stay in one place for a limited amount of time, but I fell in love with Dubai for its vibrancy and diversity. Shop: My favourite brands at the moment are Diesel Black Gold, COS and Berluti. But for my multi-brand needs I always hit Saks in Burjuman Mall, my all-time favourite mall. Spa: I absolutely love SensAsia Urban Spa; it’s a brilliant spot to unwind. party: My top place to party at the moment is Blue Marlin. relax: I love to take little trips to get away from the city. I also like a stroll round RIPE Market. They have amazing organic produce and it’s a brilliant spot to spend a weekend morning. Culture: I love the way DIFC has developed into a little cultural hub with galleries such as Cuadro, Art Space and Ayyam, where you can always find interesting exhibitions at all times. I also go to the Art Nights events when the weather is cool enough.

CITY GUIDES

Zahra LyLa KhaLiL, rami aL aLi, Iranian, Blogger at LylaLovesFashion.com and Creative Consultant 30 years in Dubai

The best part about living in the UAE… Dubai is home to me. I was born here and my parents also live here. We have seen the city grow and advance into a melting pot of different nationalities and cultures. It is a city that welcomes you with open arms and gives you amazing opportunities and a comfortable way of life. Shop: Etoile La Boutique in Mall of the Emirates is a go-to for my favourite brands. I love that they carry regional designers, many of which I like to wear and support. Symphony Boutique in The Dubai Mall is the perfect place to shop for gowns and accessories. The homegrown boutique has a fabulous range of eveningwear and I always leave with pieces that make me feel like a princess. Spa: You will always find me at The Nail Spa where I get my mani/pedi done. They have really good nail technicians who make my hands and feet look their best. Relax: Dubai has some of the best beaches in the world, but I usually visit Al Sofouh Beach. It is an open stretch of beach situated between incredible villas along the Al Sofouh Road. It used to be called ‘The Secret Beach’ as not many people knew about it. It doesn’t get very busy which is why I keep going back there. CultuRe: Tashkeel is an art gallery and studio space for regional artists. I love being around different creatives and being able to produce my own artwork in their studios. My office is based there so I could be blogging in the morning and silk screening T-shirts in the afternoon. I also like to walk around Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood formally known as Al Bastakiya. It is one of the oldest parts of Dubai featuring the old windtower houses that are now turned into art and culture venues. magazine

Fashion Designer of Rami Al Ali Couture 18 years in Dubai The best part about living in the UAE… I left Syria in 1997 to travel to Dubai and fulfill my dream of being a fashion designer. It has been a great place for me to start a career in the fashion industry and to establish the Rami Al Ali Couture label. Dubai has developed and become an international fashion hub through the years. It has been an amazing journey and I’ve never looked back since then. Shop: While I prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of the malls, I tend to visit The Dubai Mall as it offers everything under one roof. Aside from being a high-end shopping destination where you can find both designer and high street stores, the mall also has plenty of restaurants to choose from in between shopping. Spa: There are endless options available in Dubai. However, my idea of a perfect spa getaway is spending a couple of hours in a very serene place listening to a mix of classical and jazz music – I love it. paRty: After a long week, I enjoy unwinding and catching up with friends at Zuma in DIFC. I love its sophisticated and vibrant atmosphere. Relax: I would recommend visiting the older areas of Dubai such as The Souk Al Bahar and the more cultural parts of the city. It’s a relaxing experience – like a miniescape from the modern Dubai. These spots showcase the culture and heritage of this region that brings me back to the Dubai I first knew when I initially moved out here. CultuRe: I love exploring new cities and soaking up new cultures. Travelling has been a huge part of my life – it’s been my number one source of inspiration. It’s my way of expanding my own understanding of the world – the people around me, their customs, beliefs and way of living. For me, the world is like a big gallery full of beautiful and interesting things to see. 59
