WISH you WERE HERE… For the first time ever, over 10 million tourists chose to holiday in Dubai last year, confirming the Emirates’ position as a major tourism destination. According to the Dubai Department of Tourist and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) the number of tourists visiting Dubai in 2012 represented an increase of more than nine per cent over 2011. “For the first time in our city’s history we have crossed the 10 million threshold of visitor numbers,” said Helal Almarri, Director General of DTCM. Dubai’s rising international visibility and increasing variety of tourist activities, hotels, conferences and exhibitions has led to more tourists spending time here. Additionally, a number of new 5-star luxury hotels opened last year, including the Dubai Duty Free-owned Jumeirah Creekside, Fairmont The Palm and the JW Marriott Marquis. A number of budget hotels and new apart hotels also opened. In tandem, a growing number of hotel guests, room nights and average length of stay saw hotel revenues jump by 17.9 per cent to reach Dhs18.82 billion. The total number of hotel guests and cruise passengers recorded in 2012 was 10.16 million, of which 9.96 million were hotel guests. Almost a third of tourists came from Saudi Arabia, and a quarter from Europe. The number of Russian and Chinese tourists is also growing significantly. With major attractions such as the Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, the biannual Dubai Shopping Festival and sports events such as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, the Dubai World Cup (with the world’s richest horse race purse) and the Emirates-sponsored Rugby Sevens, tourists are spoilt for choice. Already, thanks largely to the Shopping Festival, this year got off to a racing start with hotel occupancy rates in January reaching an average of 89.6%, pushing average rates up by over 10%. The opening of Concourse A at Dubai International is expected to play a major role in welcoming more visitors to the city, which continues to grow and prosper like few others. Dubai recently hosted a delegation from the Bureau International des Expositions, which was here to evaluate the Emirates’ ability to host World Expo 2020. If Dubai’s bid, with the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, is successful the city can expect some 25 million people to visit. OIL RAISES MORE THAN A MILLION FOR CANCER More than 1,300 guests, including ViPs and dignitaries, attended The Oil barons Charity ball, to pledge their support for the Friends of Cancer Patients Society. Marking the event’s 10th anniversary, this year’s ball was glamorously titled ‘The Glitter ball’. While the total amount raised is yet to be finalised, senior organising officials of the event are confident that the amount has exceeded the impressive dhs1 million raised at the last ball. CHARITy QuEST TO MOuNT EvEREST Founder of the dubai-based Maria Cristina Foundation, Maria Conceicao, is set to scale Mount Everest to raise awareness and funds to support the educational needs of the impoverished slum-dwelling children of bangladesh. Joining Maria on her quest to battle poverty through education is Etihad airways cabin-crew member denitsa boyadjieva. densita organised three bake sales with the help of 60 volunteers, raising over dhs15,000 - out of which dhs5,000 will go to cover her trek expenses, with the rest to be donated to the Maria Cristina Foundation. Maria is expected to summit the highest mountain peak on earth between 10 and 27 May 2013 depending on weather conditions, while denitsa will support Maria on the trek up to the Everest base Camp and then return to the uaE. ell me what you eat,” wrote Jean-anthelme brillat-Savarin, “and i will tell you what you are.” and with the opening of Nomad in the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, dubai residents and visitors have the opportunity to take a sublime culinary journey. “The restaurant’s inspiration was one of metamorphosis,” says donald bremner, Hotel Manager. “Metamorphosis is the transitioning of one form to another and there is no better example of a culinary change than that of South East asian cuisine from the grilled flavours of the north to the aromatics in the south.” “Working in Nomad reminds me of travels in asia and dining on some of the best cuisine each country had to offer,” says Joseph dircks, Nomad’s Chef de Cuisine. “Civilisation began in a naturally organic landscape. as man adapted to the landscape, it was transformed into an organised environment, full of the wonders of the man-made world. The transformation of organic fluid shapes into fractal geometric buildings is represented in every urban environment around the globe,” bremner continues. “This 22

metamorphosis is the inspiration for spaces that continually evolve and transform in both space and function to accommodate the schedules and need of the global traveller. Through texture and form, the fluid and fractal shapes energise guests as they refuel their mind, body and soul.” Nomad’s design reflects the spirit of travel and curiosity. “We selected the Puccini Group to design the hotel because they are highly experienced in the field of designing restaurants,” says bremner. “The restaurant complements the hotel by providing all of our guests’ dining desires in one exciting venue. The design continues using the contemporary elements demonstrated in the hotel with cleverly positioned pieces of art that mirror the hotel’s creativity.” The challenge was making the culinary concepts connect throughout the restaurant. To make sure each theme flowed seamlessly, the Puccini Group chose a high-end contemporary design concept, including an interactive bar system, spy glass mirrors, custom furnishings and outdoor furnishings from dedon. diners have four diverse culinary landmarks on their itinerary. the wine bar and terrace, a lounge experience that caters to travelers who are in need of ‘fuel’ and a place to rest and recharge. it includes a large atmospheric outdoor terrace, an open fire, the latest playstation games and inside, a wide selection of wines, including 30 by the glass—all with interactive wine menu through both a wine table (for groups) and an ipads for individuals, allowing our guests to learn more about the wines on offer. Second is the main restaurant. With a dedicated entrance, diners journey via a bridge across a pond, and are instantly struck by the airy and bright indoor dining, including candlelit meals by the water, family style grill-it-yourself BBQ tables and al fresco dinning in the gardens. he Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships proved that it had come of age when the world’s number one tennis player Novak Djokovic raised his trophy and called for the ATp to upgrade the tournament to Masters 1000 Series. Owned and managed by Dubai Duty Free, the world’s leading duty free retailer, the tournament has gone from strength to strength since its was launched on the ATp Tour in 1993. “Being named as the best World Tour 500 Event nine of the past 10 years says everything about the quality of the tournament,” Djokovic said. “You always have at least four or five of the top 10 coming here and over 100,000 spectators. This says enough about the quality of the tournament. i don’t know a single player who has played here and has a negative feeling. On the contrary, everybody wishes that this tournament was played for a bit longer - like we do in indian Wells and Miami – and i think that this tournament deserves to be elevated to Masters 1000 level.”

Speaking at the event five-time champion roger Federer, “i think the [players] who come here really enjoy it. They feel they're really well taken care of. The tournament is well run. You have a lot of practice possibilities. i think players like to see there is always an investment in terms of trying to get a bit better or give more attention to detail. You see expansions.” “That means they care about the players and they're not happy, you know, just making money every year. The money sort of comes back to the players, which is really nice, and the fans and the media, everybody [is] involved. i think those are the reasons it wins, really. And it's a tournament that's grown a lot, and it's very prestigious now as well. i think that also helps the case,” he said. This year the Championships welcomed a bevy of the very best players in the world, including roger Federer, Tomas Berdych, Juan Martin Del potro, Viktor Troicki, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Caroline Wozniacki, petra Kvitova and Jie Zheng, though in the first days of the tournament

World Number One Serena Williams and top seed Victoria Azarenka both withdrew from the Championships due to injury. “Once again many thousands of tennis fans have been able to watch the very best players in the world compete here in Dubai,” said Colm Mcloughlin. “We were able to witness petra Kvitova display the form that took her to the 2011 Wimbledon title, and see the top player in the world, Novak Djokovic, come through a thrilling final to win his fourth title here." HH Sheikh Hasher Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, president of Tennis Emirates, and HH Sheikh Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, Chairman of the Asia Tennis Federation and president of Arab and Kuwait Tennis Federations, watched the exciting men’s final from the royal Box. One of the most emotional matches of the tournaments was the semi-final between part-time Dubai resident Federer and Berdych. it was a tough match for both players and, despite the crowd’s support for Federer, Berdych beat the world’s greatest player of all time in three sets, 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4, after the defending champion held three match points in the second set tiebreak. “i couldn't be feeling better than this, coming from court [after] playing roger – i would say almost in front of his home crowd - and being the one who won that match. it really feels great," said Berdych, the first player from the Czech republic to reach the final since Jiri Novak in 2003. Dubai’s fortnight of tennis was filled with match after match of exhilarating world-class tennis and numerous thrilling moments. Sports celebrities, including Dubai’s Sports Ambassador, legendary footballer

Novak Djokovic fans also enjoyed cheering on the six-time Grand Slam winner and his younger brother Marco as they took on russian Nikolay Davydenko and Belgium’s Dick Norman in the men’s doubles, even if the Serbian duo were defeated 4-6 6-3 10-4. Meanwhile, former Olympian horsewoman HrH princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-president and prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, presented petra Kvitova with her trophy after she defeated italian Sara Errani 6-2 1-6 6-1. The ladies’ doubles title was won by Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza, who defeated Nadia petrova and Katarina Srebotnik 6-4 2-6 10-7. The following week Mahesh Bhupathi and Michael llodra beat robert lindstedt and Nenad Zimonjic 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (8-6) to take the men’s doubles title. Tennis super star Caroline Wozniacki swapped her tennis shoes for a swimming costume as she tried out some of the new water attractions at Dubai’s Wild Wadi. Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic bonded with an endangered hawksbill sea turtle, which he named leonardo, during a visit to the Dubai Turtle rehabilitation project at Burj Al Arab. Naming his new 30-kilogramme friend after his favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoon character, the player with a conscience then helped transport leonardo to the nearby Mina A’Salam Hotel, where he swam with him in the rehabilitation pen pool. Djokovic has been invited to return next month when leonardo will be tagged and released into the sea. From then on the player will be able to track him on seaturtle.org. While some of the lady players took to the Bedouin-style drums, Djokovic was seen gyrating with a belly dancer while his fellow players bonded with a pair of local falcons at the players party held in the garden of the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. Other players mixed with fans, even hitting a ball or two with some or signing balls, tennis shirts, towels and more… The custom-built Tennis Village was a hive of activity as the community gathered to be part of the major sporting event. t is the closest thing to royalty in America: Hollywood celebrity. And this year’s 85th Academy Award ceremony – a cinematic coronation of sorts – left 40.3 million viewers speechless with glamour, scandal and surprises. First-time host, American comedian, actor and writer Seth MacFarlane, was following in some impressive footsteps, including Bill Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Anne Hathaway and James Franco. MacFarlane, who used comedic song and dance numbers, including Oscar-nominated actors such as Sally Field, kept the show moving but his humour was criticised by some for his quips about women’s contributions to cinema. What was not controversial was the parade of sophisticated style that ruled the infamous red carpet. The women’s fashion highlights included Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway’s pale pink Prada gown (despite rumours that she had a last-minute fashion emergency because her gown was too similar to her Les Misérables co-star Amanda Seyfried), which was somewhat reminiscent of past Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Ralph Lauren gown. Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence stunned with her shimmering, if predictable Dior gown (she is the latest face for the fashion house) and sultry redhead Jessica Chastain stunned with her figure-flattering Armani number. Of course, male nominees looked dapper in their tuxedos – how diverse could their formal attire be? The defining fashion moment for the gentlemen nominees actually came immediately after the awards ceremony when Ben Affleck, director of the Best Film winner, Argo, shaved off the full beard he sported during the ceremony. But the host’s comedic antics and finery were the only superfluous parts of the ceremony. Many Hollywood film commentators suggested that this year’s nominees for Best Picture were miles ahead of past nominees in terms of substance and quality—focusing less on special effects and technology and more on substantive, human stories. Best Film winner Argo is a political thriller based on a true story about a hostage rescue mission, Beasts of the Southern Wild is a fantastic narrative about a child facing social and natural disaster, and The Life of Pi asks philosophical questions using the device of a conversation between boy and tiger. This year’s nominees also tackled a similar US historic moment: The Civil War. Directors Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino broached the issues of war and slavery in diverse ways—the former through a thoughtful portrait of Lincoln and the latter using an action-adventure format. The biggest surprise came during the Oscar’s final moments when US First Lady Michelle Obama gave the Award for Best Picture via satellite. A stunned and smiling audience gasped as she announced the winner, looking statuesque in her Deco-style glittering, custom grey Naeem Khan gown. dv

P
art of Dubai's Strategic Plan 2015 sets out the government's plans for promoting sustainable economic development within the emirate, with tourism identified as one of six major factors of future growth. While priority is given to protecting the interests of Dubai nationals by introducing educational programmes to improve skills and reduce reliance on outside workers, the plan also aims to adopt a sustainable approach to tourism development that will protect the environment according to international standards and preserve the fragile eco system of the emirates. After all, the reality is harsh. The UAE has the world’s largest ecological footprint and while Dubai is known for its beach resorts, lush parks and designer golf courses, keeping that landscape green requires huge quantities of water. The UAE has the world’s highest per capita water use. Several organisations have been active in combatting the deficit, including The Emirates Environmental Group, founded in 1991, which has provided visible and measurable contributions towards improving the quality of the environment, be it with annual clean-up campaigns, recycling initiatives or raising awareness with public meetings. Ditto the Emirates Marine Environmental Group founded in 1996. Look out for too the Blue Flags when you visit beaches in the emirates – part of a joint WWF initiative with Emirates Wildlife Society. The Blue Flag programme is awarded on the basis of compliance with up to 32 criteria for beaches and 24 criteria for marinas covering four key areas: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management and safety and services. There are currently 12 beaches with this distinction across the UAE.
In the hotel sector, The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has recently launched the Green Tourism Award programme to encourage innovation in eco-tourism and provide incentives for hotels to reduce their carbon footprint and promote a celebration of the UAE’s natural assets, of which there are many. First and foremost, snorkelling, scuba diving and wreck diving allow a close-up encounter with Dubai's rich marine life. The best scuba and snorkelling sites are found in the emirate of Fujairah, as well as off Snoopy Island on the Gulf of Oman, where tropical fish congregate around an extensive coral reef. The Arabian Gulf has a wide diversity of eco-systems and marine species, including sea turtles and the world's second-largest population of dugongs, or sea cows. The government has been working to restore the fragile reefs damaged by construction, by sinking old ships and planes as artificial reefs to encourage more coral growth. These shipwrecks also provide opportunities for the adventurous to explore or PADI divers to practise their skills. Land-based adventures include desert safaris, wadi-bashing and dune skiing, as well as hiking tours in the Hajar Mountains – with base camps set up in abandoned Shihhi villages (a tribe of the northern emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and neighbouring Oman). For ornithologists, there are more than 400 species of birds in Dubai at various times of year, including a number of rare species in the desert and mountain areas. The tidal wetlands are a stopover point for birds on their migration to Africa, including flamingos and herons. There are extensive bird-watching opportunities in places as aPRiL 2013

TurTle power Did you know when the UAE took part in the Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea, it commissioned 13 short films within the theme ‘The Living Ocean and Coast’. The most powerful was The Turtle, that highlighted the UAE’s efforts to protect its environment. Since its screening, the film has won the Silver Medal at the expo in Korea and the Golden Dolphin Award at the Cannes Corporate Media and TV Festival 2012. In September, the film was screened at the UAE Film Festival in Washington DC and is now being used in classrooms all over the world to help educate children on environmental issues. The young Emirati star of The Turtle, Ahmed Mohammed Ali Al Dahouri, who plays Ali, continues to capture the hearts of international audiences and won the Distinguished Character award during the recent 9th Dubai International Film Festival.
As one of the largest natural islands in the emirate, Sir Bani Yas Island is the cornerstone of the planned Desert Islands multi-experiential destination 240 kilometres off Abu Dhabi. One of Arabia’s largest wildlife reserves, the Arabian Wildlife Park, home to more than 10,000 free roaming animals, takes up more than half of the island. ‘Cruises and Sails’ itineraries offer several packages on the Arabian Gulf, while the world’s first two zero-emission buses take guests around the island’s landscapes and wildlife hotspots. Guests staying at the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara can take 4x4 Nature & Wildlife Drives of the park in specially made vehicles accompanied by expert island staff. Interestingly, Sir Bani Yas Island is also home to UAE's only discovered Christian monastery, which is open to the public. Believed to have been built around 600 AD, it was initially discovered on the island during excavations in 1992. This archaeological site makes Sir Bani Yas one of the very few destinations in the world to offer a holistic tourism experience, covering wildlife, nature-based activities, a 5-star boutique hotel and sites of historical significance.

Desert nature tours offer opportunities for photographing wildlife, including caracal, hyenas and desert foxes, as well as capturing desert landscapes and beautiful sunsets. Come January 2013, when CA opened its doors, none were disappointed. Our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/dubaiairports) more than doubled its page likes in the past year to 11,850 while our Twitter (@dubaiairports) followers more than tripled to 21,000 by the end of March. Hence the recent appointment of John Segaert, who brings a wealth of iCT and operational experience to the position of Chief information Officer. Segaert will be key to putting in place the systems and infrastructure required by dubai airports rapid growth. Dubai airports helps local authors publish neW chilDren’s books dubai airports was once more a prominent supporter and participant at this year’s Emirates airline Festival of Literature (held from 5 – 9 March) which hosted more than 125 authors, writers, poets and journalists from around the world. in addition, dubai airports expanded its sponsorship of the event’s Emirati Writers Strand with the launch of two new children’s books.
Emirati Writers Strand saw the introduction of a new Wednesday debate, sponsored by Watani, where the uaE’s top academics and authors discussed how the arabic language can grow and withstand the increasing influence of English. also appearing on the Emirati Writers Strand programme was the uaE’s dubai abulhoul – who at age 11 wrote her first novel, Galagolia – and Cornish House author Liz Fenwick who discussed how writers can interact with their readers through social media. dubai airports this year also sponsored local authors Fatma ibrahim, Hamda al bastaki, Reem ahli and Fatema al Kamali and illustrator Wafa al Marzougi, enabling them to publish their books in both arabic and English. about 4,000 copies will be distributed to local schools. The books, I Don’t Want to Shower and Mahra’s Magical Tree, were officially launched by Jordanian writer, publisher and advocate for literacy, Taghreed Najjar and Saudi-based publisher and founder of buzoor bookshop, Zeyna al-Jabri. anita Mehra, Vice President Marketing and Corporate Communications, said of the initiative, “dubai airports plays an increasingly important and positive role in the emirate’s cultural and creative life. We are proud to have been able to extend our support of the Emirati Writers Strand with the publishing of these books which we believe will encourage young children’s appreciation of the written word from an early age.”

Said Tahlak, “We are proud to support this great initiative which is in line with our commitment to reduce our environmental impact and provide a safe and environmentally friendly environment for our employees and customers. We believe that by supporting dubai awards for Sustainable Transport, we are able to make a significant positive step towards a greener future for the uaE.” This was the fifth edition of the Roads and Transport authority (RTa) award and the third year that dubai duty Free was recognised for its support of the dubai awards for Sustainable Transport (daST). Penfolds AmPoule on disPlAy At ConCourse A One of only 12 hand-crafted, individually numbered Penfolds ampoules is now available to view and buy at dubai duty Free. Essentially a hand-blown glass ampoule that provides an ideal wine environment and a bespoke glass plumb-bob that suspends the ampoule within a wooden Jarrah cabinet, the ampoule will be showcased in dubai duty Free in Concourse a. The Penfolds ampoule was created to celebrate the 2004 Kalimna block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has received praise from wine critics around the world and in 2011 it was awarded the highest accolade of 100 points by James Suckling, the renowned u.S. wine critic. Commenting on the Penfolds ampoule, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of dubai duty Free, said: “We are delighted to be only one of 12 retail operations to display and sell this unique and innovative work of wine art. The whole history and sense of theatre around this wine will appeal to our customers, particularly those using the fantastic facilities of the new Concourse a, which is spectacular.” The Penfolds ampoule is not only a work of wine art - it also provides a truly memorable experience. When a decision is made to open the ampoule a member of the Penfolds Winemaking team will personally attend a special opening ceremony for the owner. The winemaker will travel to the destination of choice, where the ampoule will be ceremoniously removed from its glass plumb-bob casing and opened using a specially designed, tungsten-tipped, sterling silver scribe-snap. The winemaker will then prepare the wine using a beautifully crafted sterling silver tastevin. For the lucky owner, this is a private and very luxurious wine master class, made available by dubai duty Free. 40

HeAltH, sAfety And environment AwArd for dubAi duty free based on its participation in the dubai airports Clean up day held on 6 december last year, dubai duty Free picked up the ‘best Stakeholders Team award’ for the second consecutive year at the dubai airports Health Safety Environment Excellence awards ceremony, held on 28 February. as part of its Corporate Responsibility programme, dubai duty Free has been a long-term supporter of various clean-up activities–and participated in the Clean up arabia campaign in November as well as several activities on its premises which formed part of the Emirates Environmental Group initiative Clean up uaE. The award, which was open to contractors of dubai airports and its stakeholders, examined companies which had excelled in all aspects of HSE management. The award was presented by dubai airports CEO Paul Griffiths to dubai duty Free’s Colm McLoughlin along with Chris Garton, Senior Vice-President for airport Operations and abdul Nasser, Head of airport Safety assurance. The ceremony was held at the intercontinental Hotel, dubai Festival City.

suCCessful CyCling CHAllenge for CHArity rAises more tHAn us$68,000 as part of its support for the dubai-based charity organisation Gulf for Good, three of dubai duty Free’s staff recently concluded the ‘Great asian Cycling Challenge.’
Robbie Huang, Pravin Chaudry and ariel Sarical, along with 22 fellow cyclists, completed the challenge that took them from Vietnam to Cambodia, covering a distance of 400 kilometres. The three staff cycled through the stunning Mekong delta from Ho Chi Minh to angkor Wat, the mysterious ancient capital of indo-China. Six days of cycling tested their physical strength as they went through paddy fields, farmland and villages, which allowed them to see asia from a unique standpoint. The challenge group has collected more than uS$68,000 in sponsorship in total, including a dubai duty Free contribution from its management and staff. all sponsorship funds will be donated to Christina Noble Children’s Foundation in Vietnam to help build a kindergarten for 90 poverty-stricken children in the rural Hiep Village in the dong Thap province of Vietnam. as part of the challenge, the team visited the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation charity project in Vietnam which allowed them to witness firsthand the work done for the disadvantaged children. Through its Corporate Responsibility department, dubai duty Free supports a great number of charities and is particularly keen to work with causes that benefit the lives of children.

ragone is universally recognised and critically acclaimed as a creative genius. Renowned for spectacular shows which integrate post-modern dance, music, circus art and special effects within a dramatic narrative, Dragone is best known for directing Le Rêve and the critically acclaimed House of Dancing Water as well as Celine Dion’s resident Las Vegas show which performed for over 5 years with daily sell out shows. This year, Dragone was roped in by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority for the Qasr Al Hosn festival. The result is the stunning ‘Story of a Fort, Legacy of a Nation’ show, which aims to bring the history of the Emirati -people to life, blending music, performances and spectacular special effects. As much as his work speaks of his success and passion, Dragone still has goals to fulfil and miles to go before he sleeps.
What is the genre of the shows you create? I call them a visual poem. It is about creating a series of images that connect with the emotions of the audience.
What was it like weaving a story and performance around the Qasr Al Hosn Fort? It was very challenging. We did not know how to approach the subject without turning it into a documentary. The story of the fort has already been told. But this wasn’t why I was asked to come here. I wanted to communicate with the hearts of the people, to remind them of their culture and values that history has left behind for them to learn from. These are the values for guiding the youth of this nation. His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan used to say that you need to remember your past in order to build your future.
What are the next projects you are working on? We are currently underway in Wuhan, China, we’re building a custom-designed five theatre building for a spectacular show there. We are 74

Where and when was your last vacation? My recent holiday to the Maldives was great. It’s a very small island where I enjoyed being barefoot under the sun on the beach all day.
How do you explore a new city? It depends, sometimes I like to go to a resort for quiet relaxation, sometimes I like to go camping and explore the real life of a place by going to all the unexpected and non-tourist spots. Sometime I like to visit a city simply to eat at a restaurant I’ve heard a lot about. I visit Paris, for example, just to go to the theatre or see the museum. Sight-seeing tours are a definite no for me.
What are your travel must-haves? It’s kind of a unavoidable cliche - my laptop. And my wife whenever I can.
Do you travel light?
also going to be building a theatre in Dubai by the end of 2015 beginning of 2016 for a permanent show here. It will be close to the Burj Khalifa and is being organised with the Al Habtoor family.
You obviously travel a lot. How do you manage the stress? I travel 250 days in a year. I’m always working and never feel the need for a holiday as travelling gives me the privilege of meeting different people and embracing other cultures. Having said that, I try and stay healthy amid my enthusiasm and surround myself with people who are positive for me.
How do you spend your free time, if you have any? In my free time I like to be with friends. I love travelling and I feel life is too short and I won’t be able to go everywhere. I feel it’s already late for my goal of visiting as many places that I can manage to. I travel as I want to see my journey.
I definitely travel light. What I don’t bring my wife gets along.
How do you overcome jet lag? I’ve tried all the tricks and medicines out there, nothing works. Jet lag is to sleep when you want to sleep and wake up when you want to. Of course it’s all dependant on my schedule. Jet lag is not so bad when you travel well for example being able to shower on the plane is an exhilarating experience.
What is the biggest misconception you’ve encountered about Dubai? That it is just a big shopping mall. When you come here you realise there are endless dimensions to this city.
What have you learnt in all your travels? Tolerance. As humans we always have a fear of the unknown. Embracing a different culture for what it is teaches you that we are all so similar in our differences. We have to open ourselves to meet people, to accept them otherwise no door will ever be open for us. We’re all the same, we love for the same reasons and cry for the same reasons. dv
