Colour connected... The inaugural Dubai Festival of Lights, organised in Downtown Dubai by Emaar Properties, in partnership with the City of Lyon’s Festival of Lights, offered a spellbinding experience for visitors, with more than 30 spectacular lighting and artistic installations covering alleyways and public spaces creating the brightest square kilometre on earth: these charming visual effects perfectly represented Dubai’s successful balance between heritage and modern life. Dubai hotels welcomed more than 11 million guests in 2013, a million more than in the previous year, and moving between continents is now even easier: a recent ruling brought the total of European countries whose citizens no longer need a visa to enter the UAE to 28, and Europe reciprocated by making UAE citizens the first from an Arab country to enjoy visa-free travel to 26 countries in the Schengen area. Work on the Smart City project for Dubai has now commenced. It has been announced that no less than 1,000 government services will go smart in the next three years, allowing easily accessible, quick, and efficient access through smart devices. The Dubai public transport network is also becoming more interactive by the day. The first 100 of a grand total of 3,500 Dubai taxis with interactive LCD screens and WiFi connection now run from Dubai Airport, named among the top nine airports in the Middle East by consultancy firm Skytrax. The first eight trams of the Dubai line, the first tram line in the Middle East region, will enter service at the end of this year, making it the world’s first tram to run with ground power and without overhead wires. Additionally, the final two stations on the Metro green line, the first urban train network in the Arabia peninsula and the world’s longest fully automated metro network, are now open and ready to handle 11,000 passengers per hour per direction. Emirates Airline, named among the top eight on-time airlines in the Middle East and Africa in 2013, has just started a new connecting flight with Boston and announced a daily service to Chicago, which will start in August. Dubai is clearly becoming a place where being connected within the city and with the world is easier than ever. Stay connected! dv

155 million-year-old dinosaur arrives in town! Luxury shopping is an ancient art - and Emaar has just given shoppers at the dubai Mall another singular and sensational object at which to marvel: the addition of a 155 million-year-old Late Jurassic Period female dinosaur discovered in 2008. For several million dollars, Emaar was able to purchase the remains of the adult dinosaur — the first of the ancient creature’s bones that have been found in a sleeping position. The remains were moved from dan Quarry in Wyoming, uSa, and their reconstruction at the mall will be the first time they have been shown outside the uSa. The 24.4-metre-long, 7.6-metre-tall exhibit of the prehistoric dinosaur is open for free viewing by the public in the

Grand atrium of the mall. The exhibit is the only one of its kind in the world and is mounted in an upright position. Nearly 90 per cent of the fossil’s bones are original, making the skeleton unique in the history of palaeontology. The best part? The dubai Mall is reaching out using various social media platforms of Emaar Properties (using the hashtag #NameTdMdino) to find a name for their dinosaur. The winner of the competition, to be selected by a committee of scientists, experts and senior management of Emaar, will win a five-day/six-night trip for four (two adults and two children under the age of 12) to ‘Jurassic Park’ in universal Studios, Orlando, uSa, inclusive of flights, accommodation and tickets to the attraction.

Jump in! This year’s annual charity swim in dubai was a lifesaver for doctors Without borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). More than 700 men, women and children of all ages and levels raised more than dhs200,000 when they participated in Wild Wadi's Swim around burj al arab. The 12th annual charitable event saw Thomas dalgarno and Gwen Van beek win the 1600metre competitive men's and women's races — while others enjoyed a more leisurely 800-metre ‘open swim’. all of the proceeds from the event go towards MSF's humanitarian aid and to the uaE Red Crescent Society. 10

Al Ghurair Centre's Dub Fest international all the world’s a stage. Students of the bard know that from the earliest days the best performances have been those where actors and audiences interact. The al Ghurair Centre celebrated this age-old theatrical tradition with their launch of the al Ghurair Centre's dub Fest international street theatre and comedy fair. Previously incarnated as the dubai Street Festival in Marina Mall, this renamed and revamped free 10-day family-friendly event brought 30 international acts from over 12 different countries to perform in over 300 shows for thousands of visitors. The extravaganza included zany acts from ex-Cirque du Soleil gymnasts, Guinness world record holders, international break dancers, live musicians, flamethrowers, tight-rope walkers and 3d chalk artists performing on the inner streets of al Ghurair Centre in deira — topped-off by the unusual talents of the Rubberband boy from Christchurch, New Zealand.

Turtle tales! The latest book, The Turtle Secret, from long-time city resident (since 1975), Gulf cultural champion and acclaimed children’s author, Julia Johnson, was launched recently in Jebel ali. Johnson, who has appeared on the bbC and in radio productions in the uK, quickly became familiar with the city’s viewers on dubai Channel 33, and her first book, Let’s Visit the United Arab Emirates, was published in 1987. Since then Johnson has written over a dozen stories, including The Pearl Diver, A Gift of the Sands and The Peacock and the Mermaid. Her book The Leopard Boy was lauded by former Children’s Laureate and award-winning author of children’s books, Michael Morpurgo, as “a beautiful story, a wise and wonderfully told tale”. Welcome Back! Starting 22 March, a new ruling by the uaE Ministry of Foreign affairs exempts citizens of 13 European member states from requiring a pre-entry visa to the uaE – in the hope of extending an even greater welcome from dubai to European tourists. With citizens of the other 15 European member states already being exempt, the announcement means that all citizens of the European union holding an ordinary passport will be allowed to enter the uaE without having to previously apply for a visa. The 13 countries that come under the new exemption are Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia, Romania and bulgaria. dubai’s top visitor source markets in 2013 included five European union countries, each of which were already exempt from requiring pre-arrival visas: the uK, Germany, France, italy and the Netherlands.

Roger that! Swiss champion Roger Federer and american star Venus Williams were crowned the winners of the 22nd edition of the dubai duty Free Tennis Championships, after a fortnight of thrilling matches and spectacular performances from the world's top class players.

ver 115,000 spectators flooded into the Tennis Village this year to enjoy the electric atmosphere and worldclass sporting action of the 2014 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Owned and managed by Dubai Duty Free, the world's leading duty free retailer, the DDF Tennis Championships began in 1993 as the Dubai Men’s Open, with the women’s tournament joining in 2001, and has gone from strength to strength, as proved by this year's success. Chanting crowds showed unprecedented enthusiasm and support for the champions taking part in the 2014 WTA and ATP tournaments, and were rewarded by a series of matches full of unexpected results and nail-biting action: drama did not spare the courts, with player Juan Martin Del Potro forced to retire after aggravating his pre-existing left wrist injury, and world number nine Simona Halep forced to abandon the tournament with a right Achilles injury. Venus Williams was crowned champion in the WTA tournament, her third Dubai trophy, defeating French player Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-0 in a fast and furious final. With this victory, Williams not only proved that her long lay-off due to health problems is completely over, but also became only the second player ever to win in Dubai for at least three times, joining four-time winner Justine Henin. “It feels good,” said Williams. “Just to be able to be here and compete was the first thing that made me so happy; and then obviously to play well, win the title and have this wonderful streak here is definitely an accomplishment.” Russian duo Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova scored their first Dubai title in the WTA doubles, with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win over Americans Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears. In the men's tournament, Roger Federer made history by taking the coveted ATP trophy for the sixth time, while crushing the 11-game 16

winning streak of Monegasque player Thomas Berdych, his opponent in the final. After an initial stumble, and battling it out to the last breath in a very close match, Federer emerged victorious with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 – the Swiss player proving that he is now back on top form after a 2013 season hampered by back problems. “It's like one of those things – you just hope it turns for the better,” said Federer on being down in the first set. “Once you do get back, it's important to not then relax and think, oh, the hardest part is done. I was happy I was able to win that second set. Anything could have happened.” The path to victory has not been easy for Federer, who survived a scare in his match against Czech champion Radek Stepanek, winning 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals, in another game that excited the crowds. Federer said he was helped by the great atmosphere generated by the sell-out Centre Court crowd: “I really do feel I have great crowd support here in Dubai,” he said. “The Mexican wave was a treat. I really do appreciate all the support I get here.” Serbian player Novak Djokovic had hoped to equal Federer’s number of Dubai victories and to achieve a career first with five wins in the UAE tournament, but his dream was stopped by Federer himself in a semi-final which had all the energy and tension of a final, the crowds overflowing from the stadium to see the two great rivals facing each other. The close match saw the Serbian make the better start, but Federer fought back and Djokovic admitted that it was a deserved victory. “Congratulations to him for coming back in the match,” said Djokovic. “He deserved to win. He played better in the second part of the match. I just wasn't managing to move as well.” A great performance in the ATP doubles also came from Indian Rohan Bopanna and Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who achieved their first championship title together with a final score of 6-4, 6-3

Venus Williams' magnificent performances have thrilled us throughout what has been a very interesting competition played at the very highest level,” said Tournament Director Salah Tahlak. “The final between Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych was a fitting end to what has been a wonderful festival of tennis that has thrilled not only the many thousands of fans who have flocked to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, but millions around the world who have watched some fantastic competition on television and other media,” Tahlak added. As a cherry on top, the DDF Tennis Championships have also been named for the 10th time in 11 years as the most-favoured ATP World Tour event at the ATP World Tour Masters 500, an accolade received at the 2013 ATP World Tour Awards. This prize is particularly welcome as it is voted for by the ATP players themselves. “It is a great honour to once again receive this award,” said McLoughlin. “We always try to ensure that the players have a fantastic experience when they come to Dubai, and to create a very relaxed and friendly environment. Also, over the years we have greatly enhanced the facilities, including the opening of our own five-star hotel on-site, the Jumeirah Creekside.” “The DDF Tennis Championships are definitely one of the bestorganised tournaments in the world,” Serbian former champion Djokovic commented. “They make sure that all the players feel like they’re at home. They have great facilities, and now with the new hotel it has become even more convenient for the players to be close to the courts. For a player to be part of such a great event is always an honour.”

it is not a surprise that the dubai duty Free Tennis Championships are continuously voted among the favourite tennis tournaments for top aTp and WTa champions: dv caught up with some of the amazing activities that took place off the tennis courts.

he thrilling action on the courts of this year's DDF Tennis Championship matched the great events happening off the courts, making this tournament truly unforgettable for fans and players alike. The fortnight-long festival of sports and entertainment saw a stellar line-up of players battling it out on the courts and great entertainment at The Tennis Village. And, in between training, the top players have also kept busy off-court. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Gomez Herrera and former world number one tennis player Boris Becker accepted the invitation from HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, to try indoor skydiving at his private wind tunnel, where wind speeds reach over 320 km/h; while this year’s champion Roger Federer revisited the Burj Al Arab, site of one of his most iconic matches – in 2005, its 321-metre-high helipad saw the game between the Swiss champion and Andre Agassi becoming one of the most seen sporting events of all times. Tomas Berdych took advantage of the state-of-the art facilities of The Aviation Club-Fitness inside the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel to 18

keep in shape during the tournament, while Juan Martin Del Potro headed to the airport to test the luxury facilities of the Emirates Airbus A319, the only executive private jet service from Emirates Airline, featuring a private suite, a spacious lounge and even a spa. Italian Andreas Seppi chose to take a spin in an Audi RS7 Sportback 4.0 TFSI quattro instead. Seppi, who used to own an Audi, tried the sporty and luxurious car at the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. Women’s world number three Agnieszka Radwanska made the day of over 200 aspiring young female tennis players who came to the DDF Stadium for the Tennis Emirates Head Coaching Clinic. Radwanska gave the girls tennis tips and encouragement, and was joined by UAE national head coach Jorge Martin. 2013 champion Petra Kvitova visited Concourse A at the Dubai International Airport, and had fun sampling some of the extensive range of perfumes and makeup and browsing clothing and accessories in the designer fashion outlets of Gucci, Chanel and Michael Kors; while Caroline Wozniacki headed to Ski Dubai for a fun day in the snow: the former world number one tried the new Snow Bullet zip wire and took time to pet the resident penguins.

World number one Serena Williams tested her taste buds by taking part in Gastronomy Grand Slam with BBC celebrity chef Silvena Rowe, who was in town to take part in the Dubai Food Festival. The two new pals joined the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel’s executive chef Eric Vasta in the five-star Nomad restaurant, creating a grilled green chicken shawarma with crunchy mint and pomegranate salad. “I love to cook,” said Williams. “It’s a passion of mine so I really enjoyed meeting Silvena today. She's really awesome." Speaking of fine food, the traditional players’ party at the Tennis Village saw the athletes enjoying gourmet creations under the stars and exploring the traditions of the UAE through colourful dresses and activities such as falcon handling, with entertainment including a talented magician and a belly dancer. The FANtastic fan day encouraged tennis aficionados to come to the games with the most outrageous outfits they could put together: the winner of the best costume, who went home with a free weekend stay for two at the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel and two tickets to the finals, was decided by the crowd itself, as cameras scanned the audience looking for those who inspired the loudest cheer. The kids’ day saw over 700 pupils from 12 schools across the UAE take to the courts, filling it with excitement and energy. Helping to give away prizes were WTA doubles players and previous Dubai champions Sania Mirza and Cara Black. No wonder falconry has been practiced in the UAE for over 2000 years and that today Emiratis are still passionate about this incredible sport. The latest edition of the Fazza Championship for falconry, which is organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre under the patronage of the Crown Prince of Dubai, HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has this year enjoyed record number of participants, both amateurs and professionals, with over 3000 falconers from all over the GCC flying into Dubai to take part in the races. A high-tech air-conditioned tent in the Dubai area of Ruwayyah, complete with plasma screens and comfortable sofas, was set up for participants and spectators alike, so that the shining sun outside would not stop anyone from having a great day. The Fazza Championship is one of the richest falconry competitions in the world, and falconers, or ‘Khaleejis’, compete for incredible cash prizes of up to Dhs500,000, and for luxury cars such as Range Rovers, Bentleys and Lexus SUVs. The UAE is one of the only countries where professional falcon championships like these are organised; mostly, around the Gulf, falcons take part in hunting competitions – in Dubai, the only important factor is speed, and a great deal of it!

This sport is great fun for everyone involved, but requires lots of skills and patience, as expatriate Dr Maryam Hampel proved. The German veterinarian, who was competing for the eighth time, this year scored her fastest ever time with her young Gyr Falcon, who flew 400 metres in only 23 seconds. “I am enormously passionate about birds of prey, particularly falcons, because they are very regal birds,” said Hampel. “I feel very privileged to be able to both tend to them in my role as a veterinarian and then watch them compete.” “It is both exciting and at times a little intimidating for me to compete alongside such experienced falconers,” she added, “but I am very happy to be in the company of these exotic birds and such great talent!” The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre organises many competitions throughout the year, and not only for falconry: shooting is also a very popular sport in the UAE, and in recent years increasing numbers of women are taking up this traditional activity that in the past was mostly dominated by men. The Fazza Championship for shooting in Nad Al-Sheba has attracted a lot of women shooters from the GCC, and HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammad bin Hasher Al Maktoum, Olympic shooter, double trap gold medalist, and Head of the Organising Committee of the Fazza Championship for shooting in the Schützen category, said: “We have been exploring the idea of initiating an exclusive training programme, led by a professional, to train Emirati women in the art of weaponry – and hope to announce the programme in the coming months.” Emirati shooter Fatimah Mohammed Ali has been a professional shooter for four years and says: “Shooting is filled with the element of challenge and it is very rewarding to share a competitive platform with men. The shooters at this championship are extremely motivated, which gives the competition an even more exciting dimension.”

The latest in the UAE’s line-up of traditional sporting events is the hugely popular Saluki Championship, which takes place in Dubai Seih Al Dahal. Salukis, or Arabian greyhounds, have been bred for thousands of years in the region, and are some of the oldest known breeds of domesticated dogs in the world: praised for their exceptional intelligence, loyalty and stamina, they can run for long distances and reach speeds up to 100km/h! In Bedouin poetry, Saluki dogs have been called ‘wind drinkers’, ‘gazelle hounds’ and ‘desert eyes’, reflecting the strong bonds between the dogs and their handlers. Contestants from all over the world, including Ireland and Australia, come to Dubai with their dogs, to enjoy thrilling races and a joyful atmosphere on and off the course. These and all the other events of the Fazza Championships celebrate the rich UAE heritage and deserve not to be missed. dv

Where to handle a falcon: The best place to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures is at the Falcon Hospital in Dubai or its counterpart in Abu Dhabi; experienced tour guides will explain everything about the history and training of falcons and you will even be able to see them in flight and feed them while they are perched on your arm!

Where to practice your shooting skills: If you want to challenge your friends in Dubai, the Jebel Ali Shooting Club has floodlit clay shooting ranges where you can practice different styles of shooting including Olympic trap, automatic ball trap, down the line, Compak sporting and Olympic skeet. As Paris Fashion Week closes, and with much media mileage generated from his edgy shopping/ supermarket exhibition, it has been revealed that Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s Creative Director, is to design his first hotel in Macau, in collaboration with a Macanese hospitality firm. The multi-talented designer/photographer recently signed a deal to give his artistic touch to the prestigious Hotel de Crilon in Paris. The 270-room Karl Lagerfeld hotel is scheduled to open in 2017, as part of a palatial 20-storey tower on the island. Simultaneously, the workaholic octogenarian is said to be putting the finishing touches to the Chanel Cruise Collection 2014-15, which will be presented to the world next month at an exclusive fashion show in Dubai’s Design District D. This is the first time that the Parisian fashion house is presenting its cruise collection in the Middle East, recognising Dubai’s role as a world fashion centre. In the past the cruise collection has been presented in Venice, Saint Tropez, Cap d’Antibes and Singapore. Equipped with just wings and engines strapped to his body, French pilot Yves ‘Jetman’ Rossy recently flew around and over the world-famous and snow-capped Mount Fuji in Japan. Sponsored by Breitling, the fearless pilot made his debut Asian flight, rolling and looping his way around the mountain at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour. Rossy jumped out of a helicopter strapped to a carbonKevlar wing. Powered by four JetCat engines each with 22kg thrust, ‘Jetman’ was able to propel himself through the skies controlled by a hand held throttle. The French man uses his shoulders, body and legs to ascend and descend. “Flying here for sure is a dream; flying free with just a wing on my back is such a contrast to being enclosed in a cockpit. It’s hard to describe the emotions and feelings about having this opportunity. It’s spiritual and immense. I hope I can motivate the next generation of forward-thinkers to do something different – to strive to achieve their goals, even if they seem impossible,” Rossy said. According to statistics just released from the Economist Intelligent Unit’s Cost of Living Survey, Singapore is the most expensive city in the world, having overtaken Tokyo. According to the EIU report the list of five most expensive cities to live in also includes Paris, Oslo, Zurich and Sydney. The strong Singapore Dollar has contributed to the high cost of living on the island, as has the cost of public transport tickets, which are up to three times the price of those in New York. Caracas, Geneva, Melbourne and Copenhagen have pushed Tokyo down the ladder to sixth place. Interestingly, neither London nor New York, both notoriously expensive cities, made it in to the top ten. London took 15th position and New York, which took 26th place, remained the most expensive US city. So for those looking for more affordable destinations should check out Mumbai, Karachi, New Delhi, and Kathmandu. WiFi UAe A new age of communication is sweeping across the UAE, with telecoms provider du recently announcing the WiFi UAE initiative. Under WiFi UAE, all public areas in the country will be Wi-Fi enabled. The project has already been rolled out at more than 100 prominent locations in Dubai and the capital, Abu Dhabi. In its next phase, the rest of the UAE will be covered. Downtown Dubai and parts of Dubai Silicon Oasis already offer free Wi-Fi, while visitors to Downtown Dubai’s Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard get connectivity along its entire 3.5-km length. The programme has also been designed to give visitors information and guidance on popular tourist landmarks, directions and other places of interest. The WiFi UAE initiative is in keeping with the ‘Smart City’ project announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which will provide residents with high-speed internet connection in public places and ‘live’ services and information.

The northern runway is nearing the end of its design life and requires resurfacing and other modifications to accommodate future traffic. ouT for buLL Reigning darts champion Michael van Gerwen is ready to defend his title at the dubai duty Free darts Masters, and will compete against seven other hopefuls at this year’s first World Series event. The two-day tournament will take place on 29 and 30 May, at the dubai duty Free Tennis Stadium, and is returning after the great success of the inaugural 2013 edition. “it was such an honour to play for the first time in dubai last year and bring darts to a new part of the world,” said van Gerwen. “i can’t wait to return with the other players and be able to compete for such a great title. The crowd and atmosphere was fantastic last year in the ddF Tennis Stadium, and i look forward to trying to retain the title.” Competing in the tournament will be the top six players in the PdC Order of Merit at the start of 2014: Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Simon Whitlock, adrian Lewis, dave Chisnall and James Wade. ailing from a long dynasty of luxury winemakers, the French vineyards on the Baron's family estate produce Mouton Rothschild and the Champagne BdR, which are regarded as some of the most refined in the world and have appeared in a James Bond film and a Roald Dahl book.

How is the passion for Champagne transmitted in your family? Our whole life is about making the best possible wines in the world, and we have worked now for more than 150 years on the Bordeaux terroir. Our family members have always been Champagne lovers, drinking it in their castles and properties, and sharing special moments together and with friends.

How does Champagne manage to maintain its allure? The Champagne region is unique, thanks to the soil, combined with climate conditions unique to the limited area.

What innovative technologies are used in modern production? The alcoholic and malo-lactic fermentations are based on specific yeasts raised in Champagne, enabling a successful evolution of the wines, be it in the temperature-controlled vats or during ageing in bottles in the cellars, and specific steps of the process have been mechanised and computer-controlled. Caps and corks are being studied and carefully chosen to ensure the best quality.

Can you tell me more about the charity work that you do? Charity is an essential part of our family philosophy. Our Champagne is now another tool to support charity actions within the family network or through our worldwide partners; such as offering auctions in aid of the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation and the AIEU (Autism) foundation in Australia, and donating gifts to the French Oenologist association. 74

Do you travel a lot, since you sponsor so many sporting events?

As a business traveller, how do you relax during a flight?

Yes, but mostly through my family and finance businesses. I am also keen on travelling for more sporting reasons: golf, polo, jumping and mountain activities.

Being in a plane is in itself for me a very relaxing moment: no phones, no internet, no meetings. I look at what other people do, I go through the wine and champagne list and taste everything. I am always very curious about what other people produce, and I sometimes have great surprises. Then I watch a film or read a book.

Do you have a favourite travelling destination? My favourite destination is and always will be meeting people. I really appreciate travelling to Asia, and have therefore often the chance to make stops in the Middle East, and especially in Dubai. I also enjoy the USA and Italy â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where I lived â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for my studies and business purposes.

How do you explore a new city? In every country I travel to for promotional reasons, I am always welcomed to very nice places. Personally I try to keep some time for cultural activities, like visiting museums and, when possible, doing some shopping in those extraordinary malls.

How do you overcome jetlag? I try to sleep as much as I can. I don't spend a lot of time in the different countries that I visit and I have to be as efficient as possible. This is very important for the people I meet.

What is your favourite place in Dubai? I like to spend some time by the Marina and I particularly appreciate a glass of wine on a terrace at sunset. And of course, I always try to spend some time in The Dubai Mall: so extraordinary, but so huge. I'd love to stay longer... dv
