There’s plenty to celebrate in Dubai this month. Dubai Duty Free, the world’s number one airport retailer, is celebrating 31 years as one of Dubai’s top companies and a pioneer in the duty free sectors. Meanwhile, Dubai has been named as one of the most fun cities in the world! According to an international survey conducted by GetYourGuide and G0Euro, Dubai takes 19th place, out of 1,800 cities looked at in the Ultimate Fun City guide. Participants had to assess each city for 11 characteristics including shopping, bars, average prices, and entertainment. Dubai has also launched a ‘Happiness Meter’, a unique initiative aimed at measuring the public’s happiness and satisfaction levels with government services daily. As part of the Smart Government–Smart City initiative, reports with input from users will be electronically sent to a central network for analysis in a bid to improve the quality, efficiency and performance of public services. Over the course of 2015 the Happiness Meter will be developed to cover all government departments. Simultaneously, the UAE is witnessing significant demand for .ae web addresses at a time when there is growing demand for Arabic content. Over the past six months 121,300 .ae registrations have been made, placing the UAE first in the region for the number of local domain name registrations. Happy Birthday UAE! Join the party! celebrations in honour of the UAe’s 43rd National day (2 december) will be more elaborate than ever as the seven emirates show their national spirit with flags, fireworks displays, parades, art, products, sports events and special heritage activities – and even attempts at new Guinness World records – throughout an entire week (26 Nov-5 dec). each year, thousands of people in every emirate celebrate 2 december 1971; the day when the UK's treaty expired and the separate sheikdoms formed a union – comprising Abu dhabi (capital), dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Qaiwain, ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah – giving birth to the United Arab emirates. ABU DHABi is alive with breathtaking fetes and activities, including hot air balloon rides on the corniche, concerts by top Khaleeji performers, falconry competitions, sailing regattas, art festivals and theatrical shows – throughout the capital city. One of the top events in the capital emirate is the Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, which runs until 12 december. Named in honour of the UAe’s founding father, this year’s festival blends technology and
culture with living museums, workshops, exhibitions and replicas of old villages and settlements, with traditional tools and artifacts to show how the desert, oasis, mountains and sea shaped early life in the UAe. On 5 december Nitro circus, one of the biggest and most popular action sports shows in the world, is partaking in the celebrations by staging a one-off special stadium show in Zayed Sports Stadium. For the first time, ringleader Travis Pastrana will travel to the UAe with his crew of the world’s best action sports athletes to perform the most difficult and dangerous stunts in freestyle motocross, bmX and skate, with star athletes from across the world. in Dubai free events will blossom throughout the city, including one of this year’s most special events: an attempt to set a new Guinness World record in the category of the largest flower flag by creating 43 huge flower flags with live flowering potted plants at popular locations. celebrations will include the annual UAe National day Parade on mohammed bin rashid boulevard in downtown dubai. This spectacular crowd-pleasing event is a family-friendly extravaganza packed with nonstop events, displays and patriotic flair. People drape flags on their houses and cars, ladies paint their nails the colours of the flag and children attend special face-painting events so they can display flags on their faces. The dubai Grand Parade is a grand affair, bringing a show of luxury cars and bikes, courtesy of dubai motor Festival 2014, and led by dubai Police’s fleet of supercars. car lovers have a chance to seal their spot in history by being part of Guinness World record attempts for the largest number of car brands to feature in a parade, and for participating in the longest selfie relay ever. december 2014

but the festivities don’t stop at the parade. The motor Festival (until 6 december) is offering the world’s first car lighting show by infiniti; the dubai international rally championship; and the red bull car Park drift. The family-friendly events also include an exclusive automotive marketplace organised by dubizzle, a photo exhibition on ‘motoring Passion in dubai’ by Wheels magazine, fireworks, live music and more. Sports fans can continue to celebrate National day throughout the month. On 2 december, from 12-6pm The dubai marina Yacht club will present the free UAe National day boat Parade and Family Fun day, an aquatic-themed spectacle with yachts dressed in UAe-themed decorations at the UAe National day boat Parade and Family Fun day. Help cheer on and congratulate the runners raising money for children unable to walk – in The Seven emirates run, who will have crossed every one of the emirates by 2 december, with a grand finish at the base of the burj Khalifa. This is a celebratory week unlike any other in the world, where pride, community, spirit and fun show why the UAe is a leading global destination.

This year brought new honours and acclaim for recent international and regional accomplishments – as well as the launch of stunning projects designed to keep the world spellbound. CEnTrE of THE UnivErsE dubai has spent the year preparing for an expected 25 million visits (70 per cent of whom will be from overseas) to World expo 2020 (20 October 2020 until 10 April 2021) – the world’s top honour. With the theme ‘connecting minds, creating the Future’, it will create global connections and inspire mobilisation around shared challenges. This will be the first expo in which the majority of visitors come from beyond a nation’s borders. ECo-fUTUrE Abu dhabi is home to the world’s first sustainable eco-city: masdar, the world’s leading ‘greenprint’ for how cities can accommodate rapid urbanisation and yet dramatically reduce energy, water and waste. Pushing the boundaries of smart design and technology, it will include the world’s largest cluster of high-performance buildings that create a real-time laboratory to monitor and study how cities use, conserve and share resources. To YoUr HEAlTH in may dubai broke another Guinness World record by conducting 8675 diabetes screenings for The dubai mall shoppers in just eight hours. more than 80 nurses were on hand for an eight-hour diabetes screening of mall-goers as part of the One Heart Health community awareness drive. soCiAl sUCCEss The World economic Forum has announced that the UAe has near perfect equality in ‘educational Attainment' and ‘Health and Survival', two key categories contributing to a country's index rating. The UAe ranked joint first in ‘Literacy rate' and ‘enrolment in Secondary education' amongst all nations, with only a one per cent gap between women and men in overall ‘educational Attainment’, and less than a 4% gap found between males and females in the ‘Health and Survival' category. BEsT in BUsinEss The UAe's overall global ranking in the World bank's doing business index rose to 23rd in 2014. The index of economic Freedom 2014 ranked the UAe's economy as the second freest of 15 countries in the middle east, and 28th worldwide among 185 countries, an overall score that is higher than the world and regional averages. The UAe also took the regional lead in the WeF Global competitiveness index 2014–2015, moving five places up to 12th position out of 144 countries. Overall, the country's competitiveness reflects the high quality of its infrastructure, where it ranks an excellent third, as well as its highly efficient goods markets (third), strong macroeconomic environment (fifth) and some positive aspects of the country's institutions – such as strong public trust in politicians (third) and high government efficiency (fifth) – that round out the list of competitive advantages. The country was ranked first in the Arab world, and 36th globally (out of 143 countries) in the Global innovation index (Gii) 2014, published by cornell University, iNSeAd and the World intellectual Property Organisation CUlTUrAl CoUps Jean Nouvel’s Louvre Abu dhabi is scheduled to open in late 2015; and the Gehry-designed Guggenheim Abu dhabi, destined to be the world’s largest Guggenheim museum, is set to open in 2017.

poetry in Motion The emirates Airline Festival of Literature and Hamdan bin mohammed Heritage center Qasidah par coeur competition is open to two age categories – 8 to 13 year-olds and 14 to 18 year-olds. Students participating in the 8-13 age category must choose one poem in Arabic, english or their mother tongue. Participants in the older age category can choose to perform one poem from the anthology provided by the festival, or perform a poem in their mother tongue. They will also be required to give a 50-word personal justification for their choice, which they must recite from memory. Judged in three rounds – starting with an internal school round followed by an inter-school round with Festival-appointed judges – the final will be held during the festival, on 4 march, judged by festival poets.

oll out the red carpet. The 11th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) is the hottest destination for the biggest stars and most elite members of the film world. Named one of the top 10 film festivals in the world, DIFF (10-17 December) is proud to bring even more glamour and talent to watch the best films of the year, discover the best in Arab cinema and mingle at events and parties of cinematic proportion. Attendees are set to include Emily Blunt, Lee Daniels and many others. Organised by Dubai Film Market, which has supported over 240 filmmakers, DIFF brings films to the screen that have gone on to enjoy critical acclaim and find new audiences across the globe, making it the world’s leading industry stage for Arab cinema. It has created essential networking and collaborative events such as The Forum, business and industry panels and workshops that take place during the festival; and Cinetech, a digital screening library of films available for acquisition; as well as the exhibitors’ stands. “DIFF is really establishing itself as the gateway to the Middle East and Asia, with so filmmakers and actors represented here,” said Cate Blanchett. “The energy around the IWC Filmmaker Award prize has even grown within 12 months; the four finalists are such diverse voices and we were saying we would like to see them all made. This award is the first step for a filmmaker and a vote of confidence [helping them] to search for the rest of their budgets.” With blockbuster events including the IWC competition, Muhr feature and short film competitions, the ‘Gulf Voices’ programme and Samsung Short Film Contest, Middle Eastern film talent is given the ultimate platform for industry support and exposure. Patel and Ravi V. Patel. “The Dubai International Film Festival is sensational; I’m having an enlightening time seeing films and meeting filmmakers, and being in Dubai has been a really good experience. We think DIFF is significant and this is an important festival. If you’re a short film-maker and win an award in Dubai, you qualify, which is very good news for filmmakers in the region,” said Former Academy president Sid Ganis. Last year, during the festival, the visiting delegation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced that DIFF has qualified as a festival that can contribute short films for Oscar consideration. Honours like this over the past 10 years have made DIFF such an important global industry event, showing extraordinary growth – attendance increasing by 150% since its launch in 2004. Attendees love it too: 96.5% of audiences say they are satisfied overall with their experience; 97.8% of festival-goers plan to attend again this year; 97.5% of industry guests are satisfied overall with the event; and there has been a 60% increase in the number of film enthusiasts signing up for packages that include exclusive access to the festival’s events and films. DIFF’s Managing Director, Shivani Pandya, explained: “The slate of films for the 11th edition is shaping up to be exceptional, consisting of the most talked-about films of the year that are being tipped as early frontrunners for awards season glory. From the Arab world we will showcase the latest rich and diverse works from the region’s leading filmmakers and there is an exciting mix of independent features and documentaries from around the world. BEST AND BRIGHTEST: COMPETITIONS Once again, DIFF is pleased to collaborate with IWC Schaffhausen, Official Sponsor and Festival-Time Partner of DIFF. This year they are bringing Friend of the Brand, Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt, to join the jury for the third annual IWC Filmmaker Award, presented to the winning filmmaker along with a US$100,000 prize. This year’s shortlisted projects are Saeed Salmeen Al Murry’s Going to Heaven, Ahd Kamel’s Sandfish and Abdullah Boushahri’s The Water. Georges Kern, CEO of IWC, explained how the jury will decide on the winner of the prestigious award: “The criteria our jury uses to select the winner are based on many aspects of the project, from the plot to the cast, the schedule event and the financing and budget. The jury sits together and discusses each project at length and gives their pros and cons on each of them. Then they finally decide on who deserves the grant the most. I must admit it’s always difficult for us to choose because the projects we receive are all extremely interesting.” DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma is also looking forward to this year’s award: “The experience and discernment of our jury are vital in helping the Dubai International Film Festival encourage exceptional filmmaking, and we are honoured to have such distinguished jury members coming to Dubai to select the IWC Filmmaker Award winner. The growth in the number and quality of submissions is evident year on year, [and comes] both from established filmmakers and exciting emerging talent.” Multi-talented producer and director of Oscar-winning Precious and The Butler, Lee Daniels, will preside over the Muhr Feature Competition. This year’s competition is hotter than ever and includes films from Ras Al Khaimah Emirati Waleed Al-Shehhi, Algerian filmmaker Yacine Mohamed Benelhadj, Khadija Al-Salami, Hicham Lasri, Reine Mitri, Hisham Zaman, Tala Hadid, Yahya Alabdallah, Daoud Abdel Sayed and Antoine Khalife. Short films competing in the Muhr Short Competition (with the winning short film in the competition qualifying for consideration for the 2016 Academy Awards) include pieces by Iraqi filmmaker Sahim 22

Omar Kalifa, Palestinian director Rami Yasin, Elie Kamal, Egyptian filmmaker Ahmed Khaled, Khadija Fatma Lemkecher, Yassmina Karajah, Mohanad Yaqubi and Omar El Zohairy. “Short films are a unique, experimental and courageous art form, telling powerful stories in under an hour. Many established filmmakers have cut their teeth by directing short films before going on to feature-length productions, which often require significantly higher financial and time investments. As a result, nurturing shortform filmmaking is essential to developing the film industry in the region, which is central to DIFF’s mandate,” said DIFF Artistic Director Masoud Amralla Al Ali. The GCC’s ‘Gulf Voices’ programme gives an incredible platform to the region’s best new filmmaking talent. This includes Saudi Arabian film director Mohammad Alfaraj, Bahraini filmmaker Saleh Nass, Hussain Ali Almotlaq from Saudi Arabia, Kuwaiti director Sadeq Behbehani, Kuwaiti director Abdullah Al-Wazzan, Emirati filmmaker Ahmed Abdulqader, Iraqi director Ali Kareem Obaid, Kuwaiti’s Yousef Al Bagshi, Qatari filmmaker Ali Al-Anssari, Iraqi filmmaker Sarmad Yassen and Iraqi director Joudi Alkinani. ‘Gulf Voices’ supports the brightest new directors, honouring a new generation of filmmakers and providing a platform for innovative Arabic cinema that offers a unique perspective on life and society in the Gulf. The vibrant film community in the region is going from strength to strength, producing a diverse collection of creative films that continue to attract a growing audience at home and abroad. The high-stakes Samsung Short Film Contest will make one budding filmmaker’s dreams come true when judges from DIFF and New York Film Academy, together with Emirati film director Nayla Al Khaja, will select the winning filmmaker, giving him or her the chance to appear at the Short Film Corner at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. drian Hayes, record-breaking polar explorer, keynote speaker, business coach, author and campaigner – who shares his time between the UK and Dubai – speaks to dv about his latest mountaineering feat: conquering K2. The holder of two Guinness World Records – for completing three polar expeditions and for making the Arctic’s longest unsupported kite-skiing journey – also conquered the UAE desert by retracing the journey made in 1940 by Sir Wilfred Thesiger. His book, Footsteps of Thesiger – detailing his 44-day, 1600-km journey by camel and foot in the trail of the British explorer - is published by Motivate and available in all Dubai Duty Free bookstores.

I’m passionate about numerous issues in the world but while I have raised money for a number of charities, I’m more driven by the causes as opposed to the treatment. My ‘work’ is therefore mostly speaking, writing and campaigning on the ‘great denials’ of our time – sustainability, economic growth, food and water security... to name just some.
What will be your next adventure?
I have two major projects earmarked – top secret of course! Joking aside, it's only once everything is in place that I make it public.
How do you prepare before an expedition?
In some ways the two to three months
prior to an expedition are even harder than the expedition itself! Aside from the intense physical training, there is a host of administration and logistics to prepare for. Add my other work commitments and it can be all-consuming.
What is your favourite holiday destination for relaxation?
There are few holidays I ever go on just to ‘relax’. However, some countries in the world leave you feeling rejuvenated, refreshed and energised – and Bali always does that for me.
What is your favourite place in Dubai?
Dubai's kite surf beach is my favourite place in the city, and the climbing crags at Hatta are second to none. dv
I’ve been ‘adventuring’ all of my life, both in and out of my British Army service. Coupled with my studies and work over 15 years in the personal development field, I took the leap to do it professionally.
What was the most challenging part of climbing K2? The challenges are numerous: high altitude, unpredictable weather, avalanche dangers... It’s tough the whole way to the summit.
The best moment?
When I got back down to Base Camp after our summit success – only then were we finally safe!
The best memory from your Guinness World Records?
Each expedition – from Canada to the North Pole, from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole and summiting Mount Everest – were different in their requirements, challenges and memories; but I don’t think anything can surpass the incredible feeling I had standing for one hour and 20 minutes on top of the world.
What about your journey through the UAE desert?
This was the most privileged and unique journey I have ever undertaken. Meeting Thesiger’s original Bedouin travelling companions, Salem bin Kabina and Salem bin Ghubaisha, now in their 80s, was the most humbling moment.

globalvista This month dv discovers that flying may soon be less stressful and quiet if new noise blocking bubble seats become popular with airlines, that eating a grapefruit could help keep off unwanted pounds and that a new app designed to give honest opinions on our shopping dilemmas will reduce our stress… words Catherine belbin Smart aircraft seats could soon raise in-flight passenger comfort levels by simply creating a ‘quiet bubble’ around the passenger that absorbs noise pollution. Nothing on a long flight can be more infuriating than noisy fellow passengers – including irritable crying babies and loud snorers. However, this may soon be a travel irritation of the past when noise-muffling aircraft seats are installed on board your aircraft. According to manufacturer Silentium, the ‘Quiet Bubble’ technology reduces ambient sound around one’s head, in much the same way that noise-absorbing headphones do. While many people use headphones on board aircraft, it’s usually to enjoy inflight entertainment systems and makes use of audio headphones that are not designed to specifically block ambient noise. This new system involves a series of microchips and microphones, which are installed in the seat’s headrest. The devices can also be installed in train, bus and car seats. New technology has led to lower levels of noise pollution from aircraft themselves; however, this means that on-board noises can appear louder and more irritating. Shopping alone and need advice? Do you want to know whether the skinny jeans you just squeezed into are flattering or not? Then ask your smart phone! The new Okay Fashion app, developed in France using ‘collective intelligence’, can give you feedback in real time from your personal virtual fashion advisors, who will assess the photo of you wearing the item. An honest and independent group of special fashion advisors are already advising over 50,000 shoppers in different parts of the world. The app, suitable for fashionistas and ditherers alike, was launched in the UK recently and is available in some 60 countries worldwide. According to the app’s founder, Gerard Sillam, the concept is based on ‘collective intelligence’, which Facebook founder and visionary Mark Zuckerberg believes is the future of social networks. In this case users simply create their profile and invite friends and other app users to become their advisors… So, if you are in search of an honest opinion – one that even your best friend might not give – then consult your virtual jury and their honest verdict will appear on your phone! There was a time when many formal meals began with a grapefruit-based starter; in the 1930s the Grapefruit Diet, favoured by Hollywood stars, caught on and over the years keen dieters ate the fruit in the belief that it helped them lose weight. Now new research finally confirms that eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice along with a meal could reduce weight-gain by almost one-fifth. The tangy citrus fruit is also being lauded for its benefits to diabetics, as it helps to balance insulin and sugar levels. Recent and ongoing research from the University of California, Berkley indicates that the consumption of grapefruit really does lead to weight loss, especially for people eating a high-fat diet. Over a three-month research period, mice that drank grapefruit juice while eating fatty foods gained 18 per cent less fat and had lower blood sugar and insulin levels than those who drank water while eating fatty foods. So, maybe we should take a leaf from the eternally youthful and slim singing sensation Kylie Minogue, a long-time advocate of the grapefruit diet, and make grapefruit a regular part of our balanced diet as well… dv 34

ea, China's most popular beverage, could be enjoyed without waste thanks to clever packaging that utilises teabag wrappers as handy disposable cups. Chinese students have also addressed the need for blind people to easily know the time with a pin-point touch wristwatch, and solved a common problem among motorists: in foreign countries it is often difficult to understand differently organised traffic lights, but with a straightforward system featuring bright lights and simplified signals, road rules could be easily understood by everyone. Also from China were a wheelchair prototype, designed to allow complete independence when going to the toilet, and a 3D printer fuelled by empty plastic bottles.
On the theme of bottles, three Middle Eastern students from Kish Island, Iran, have invented a method to carry around disposable drinks. A simple two-ring system can be fixed on the top of the bottle and hung on belts or backpacks, leaving your hands free to take photos or enjoy tasty street food. And talking of street delicacies, students in Taiwan have created a multifunctional plastic lid to enjoy food on the go, perfect for holding sauces, dips or any other yummy complement to your meal. Any eco-conscious traveller also wishes it could be easier to recycle wherever they are, but complicated instructions in a foreign language often make this impossible: so also from Taiwan comes a colour-coded system, designed to be placed on disposable fast-food containers, which could become a universal method to identify what is recyclable in the country you are in. Years of Dubai DutY free success Our Q&a with Executive Vice Chairman Colm McLoughlin reveals why ddF is still on top of the world. words Joanne Molina

n 20 December Dubai Duty Free (DDF) celebrates 31 years with top honours: the company is the world’s number one airport retailer and winner of the coveted ‘Airport Retailer of the Year -Single Location’ Frontier Award, the ‘Oscar’ of the industry. These accolades come as DDF currently handles 45% of regional airport duty free sales and will handle 73 million passengers and achieve US$1.9 billion in sales this year. The upcoming airport expansion and new online shop will bring yet more retail space and potential sales. DDF’s Executive Vice Chairman Colm McLoughlin is a highly respected industry leader, winning the ‘Duty Free Person of the Year’ award (in the same year that DDF won its first ‘Best Marketing Campaign’ honour), a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, and most recently the Irish Presidential Distinguished Service (IPDS) Award. With traffic at Dubai International Airport expected to increase from the current 66 million (in 2013) to 90 million passengers annually, having McLoughlin at the helm will keep DDF on the runway to success.
How does the IPDS Award impact your leadership and strategies at DDF? It was a complete surprise. I have lived in Dubai for over 30 years 40

and I did not think for a minute that I would be on the list. I was delighted to be recognised in the business category, with a special mention for my involvement with Dubai’s Irish community. The award acknowledges the success of Dubai Duty Free, which is now the single largest airport retailer in the world.
What are the top three factors that have made DDF the world’s number one airport retailer? First, we work closely with Dubai Airports and all stakeholders at Dubai International and Al Maktoum International – this is not always the case when it comes to the retail offer at airports. We also share a great boss in H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Second, our retail offer is extremely attractive and diverse and is strategically positioned at each terminal to maximise exposure. Third, we have a great team of staff that is extremely well trained and motivated. They are our front line ambassadors.
What were the best selling items of 2014? The Perfumes category, which accounts for 16% of total revenue at Dubai Duty Free, retained its top position as sales rose to Dhs917 million (US$251 million), followed by liquor and gold. Cosmetics and handbags & small leather showed 21% and 54% increases, respectively, over last year.

IT and logistic systems are second-to-none. Our staffing levels have increased, and we have 5700 employees of 50 nationalities, speaking 24 languages. This number will increase to 8,000 in the coming years.
How will the forthcoming airport expansion influence retail in the airport?

How have airport shoppers changed over the last three decades? Shopping habits have changed dramatically over the last three decades. Liquor and tobacco are still amongst the top three or four, along with gold, which is unique to this region. The demand for electronics, perfumes and cosmetics, and high-end fashion, has been noticeable, with the growth of Chinese and Russian travellers driving the sale of luxury goods. We have 450 Chinese staff. In a recent study we noted that Chinese shoppers at DDF accounted for 4% of shoppers but their spend accounted for 12% of sales.
What have been your biggest challenges when accommodating customers? Sheer numbers. DDF will handle close to 80 million sales transactions and we handle the accompanying challenges by ensuring that our
Our retail operation at Al Maktoum International covers 2,500 square metres of retail space and has recorded sales of over US$16.4 million, accounting for 1.08% of the total year-to-date DDF revenue. The long-term plans will be carried out in two phases. The first phase involves the construction of two satellite buildings, with a collective capacity of 120 million passengers annually, which will accommodate 100 A380 aircraft at any one time and which will take between six to eight years to complete at a cost US$32 billion. We will ultimately cover around 40,000 square metres when the final project is completed by the mid 2020s. The opening of Concourse D in 2015 will also add a new dimension to our retail offer at Dubai International. We will operate around 7,000 square metres of retail space there with a different layout and a number of new brands.
How will the new online shop offer more opportunities for the DDF customer? Our online platform was a big investment. We now have around 2,000 products online that customers can browse, order online and collect at the airport’s departures or arrivals. The second phase of the project will increase the number of products online to around 5,000 and allow payment online. dECEMbER 2014

Who are the DDF customers who have made it the number one airport duty free? Our boarding card analysis shows that shoppers from China, India, the UK, Russia and GCC countries make up our top five spenders. Some of this is due to the sheer numbers of passengers – India and the UK are our top two destination countries, and the GCC countries contribute big numbers. Chinese passengers spend nearly eight times above their numbers, and Russian-speaking travellers, nearly three times as much.
What are some of DDF’s important partnerships/ sponsorships? At any given time we have over 500 promotions on the shop floor. Our biggest sponsorship is the DDF Tennis Championships, which we own and organise. This year it generated US$718 million in media exposure. Our customers appreciate how we mark and offer major discounts surrounding major celebrations, such as Eid or Diwali – and we offer a sense of theatre.
What’s ahead for DDF? By 2018 our business will exceed US$3 billion per year, our staff will number more than 8,000, and our retail space at Dubai International Airport will cover more than 33,000 square metres.

ROBUST GROWTH dubai Airports emerges as a key growth factor of dubai’s economy and achieves industry-wide recognition too. SUCCESS STORY dubai International (dXb) clinched the Airport of the Year award at the Aviation business Awards 2014 held last month. At the same awards, dubai Airports (which owns and manages dXb and Al maktoum International – at dubai World central) won Training & education Initiative of the Year. The Airport of the Year category acknowledges a middle eastern airport that has experienced a breakthrough period of success over the past 12 months, with evidence of strong performance for passenger and cargo operations, relationship building with airlines and other partners, facility enhancements and market innovation. “The growth this year has been robust despite the reduction in our capacity during the 80-day runway upgrade project between may and July, and we are on track with the refurbishment and expansion of Terminals 1 and 2 as well as the new concourse. This award validates how well we have managed our growth along with the quality of our customer service,” said Anita mehra, Vice President of communications and business development at dubai Airports.
RAISE A TOAST connoisseurs can now buy the complete collection of Penfolds Grange at Le clos at dubai International. The luxury collection covers every vintage ever produced by Penfolds in the past 60 years. Le clos curated the history of Australian wine in 61 bottles, which includes the extremely rare Grange 1953 cabernet Sauvignon, the ‘hidden vintages’ of 1957, 1958 and 1959 and award-winning vintages from 1955, 1976, 1990 and 2008 which are considered amongst the best in the world. The unique ‘hidden vintages’, were created in the late 1950s by max Schubert, the estate’s chief Winemaker and concealed in an underground cellar, making them particularly unique. PILLAR OF STRENGTH According to the Quantifying the Economic Impact of Aviation in Dubai report by global research firm Oxford economics, emirates, dubai Airports and the aviation sector as a whole contributed uS$26.7 billion to the dubai economy in 2013, which was almost 27% of dubai’s GdP. The sector also supported a total of 416,500 jobs, accounting for 21% of the emirate's total employment. The report estimates that the aviation sector, including the emirates Group, dubai Airports, airlines flying into dubai, regulatory authorities and dubai duty Free, had a core impact of uS$16.5 billion GVA (gross value added) in 2013. This includes direct, indirect and induced contributions and is equal to 16.5% of dubai’s GdP. Tourism and travel activities had an economic impact of uS$10.2 billion GVA. GVA. Overall, the emirate had direct passenger flight connections to 149 cities with populations of over 1 million people, creating potential export markets of over 916 million people, or 13% of the world’s population. cargo tonnage handled in dubai between 1990 and 2013 has grown on average of 13.5% per year, compared to global average trade volumes of 5.6% per year. based on current expansion plans for dubai International (dXb) and Al maktoum International-at dubai World central (dWc), it is estimated that the overall economic impact of both aviation and tourism related activities will rise to a robust uS$53.1 billion in 2020. by 2030, the economic impact of aviation is projected to grow to uS$88.1 billion.

devil Nik Wallenda, 35, recently crossed a 182-metre-high tight rope between two Chicago skyscrapers! continue to draw crowds as they celebrate reaching their first 100 days. The trio now each weigh more than 5 kilograms and have two teeth, and are living with their mother, who takes care of each of them for five-day periods at the Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, China. The European Space Agency made history recently when they successfully landed the unmanned spaceship Philae on a moving comet – 500 million kilometres from Earth! The mother ship Rosetta was launched on 2 March 2004 and travelled 6.4 billion kilometres through the Solar System before arriving at the comet on 6 August this year. The Philae lander made a successful touchdown in early November, tweeting shortly afterwards: "Touchdown! My new address: 67P!" Now, as the washing machine-sized 100kg lander adjusts to its new environment. It will conduct research for the next year, aimed at telling us more about the origins of life and our solar system. 90
