It’s February. And that means facing the winter chill, bracing yourselves for Valentine’s Day and trying to recall why you even attempted half of your resolutions for 2012. For those of us taking up permanent residence in Dubai, it also means the start of the sporting season. As the bilateral cricket series between England and Pakistan draws to a close, we turn our attention to the stars heading to the city for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships… do the names Fred Couples and Roger Federer ring a bell? Besides world-class sports action, the itinerary is packed with our usual favourites: theatre productions, jazz concerts, comedy shows, art exhibitions and more. This is also the year we mark a Leap Year… remember those? Rapper Ja Rule, self-help guru Tony Robbins and actor Dennis Farina will be using February 29 to celebrate their birthdays. How about you? We vote for using the additional day to re-visit some of life’s simplest pleasures: walking barefoot in the sand, making others laugh, looking at old photos… or just taking the time to do nothing. F E B R U A RY

Our monthly snapshot of recent and upcoming happenings around the city and beyond.

Gasps & giggles From the pen of the master of horror, Stephen King, comes the wonderfully chilling stage version of the bestselling novel Misery. Starring Darren Day and Yvonne O'Grady, the drama will run at the First Group Theatre from February 1-11. For something the whole family can enjoy, head to the same venue for A Handful of Keys from February 16-17. Two grand pianos make for a performance of constant surprise, intelligence and wit, with music ranging from Bach and Beethoven through kings of soul Ray Charles and Fats Waller to queens of showbiz Elton John and Liberace. The unlikely mix of New York glamour and Swiss countryside naiveté by Duo Full House generates a gripping performance. Taking place on February 3 at DUCTAC, Henry Camus and Gaby Schmutz transform the stage into an entertainment feast, complete with cultural clashes, polyglot puns and improbable balancing acts.

Cool cats, hot tunes James Blunt, James Morrison, Jools Holland, Jason Mraz and Michael Roach… need we go on? Join a spectacular line-up of live entertainment at the 10th edition of the Dubai International Jazz Festival, taking place from February 16-24 at Dubai Festival City. Headliners will play across two weekends while the Jazz Garden will host smaller gigs on the weeknights between them, resulting in a total of 27 concerts covering blues, funk, swing, acid, rock, contemporary, modern and fusion.

Let the games begin Held at the prestigious Emirates Golf Club, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic attracts some of the biggest names in golf… and this year’s edition will be no different. Fred Couples – the first American to win the tournament in 1995 – has confirmed his return to the city, joining some of the world’s leading players in the $2.5 million event from February 6-12. The sporting action continues as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships kick off on February 20. The tournament will welcome eight of the world’s top ten women’s players and seven of the top ten men’s players to the Dubai Tennis Stadium, where they will compete for the title and a share of the $4 million total prize purse. 16

DUBAI SCENE

Destination Dubai Collectively, we still feel a tinge of excitement seeing Tom Cruise scale the Burj Khalifa… and the thrills for film buffs continue: several of the city’s landmarks will soon feature in Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, a movie inspired by a rare Chinese painting from the Yuan Dynasty. Starring Andy Lau, Chiling Lin and Jingchu Zhang, the Chinese action film’s key scenes will bring Atlantis, The Palm, Burj Al Arab and the Burj Khalifa into the limelight. With a budget of roughly Dhs59 million, the movie will be shot in six cities: Dubai, Hangzhou, Fuyang, Taipei, Tokyo and Milan.

Art smart For a fresh spin on German and Austrian art, The Dark Side of the Moon is a group exhibition with works by Olaf Breuning, Benhard Buhmann, André Butzer, James Clar, Michael Sailstorfer, Philip Mueller and Ralf Ziervogel. Running from February 15 – March 15 at Carbon 12 gallery, the multi-media collection will investigate the very abstract idea of music influencing art. Palestinian artist Hazem Harb’s debut in the UAE will be hosted by Etemad Gallery from February 20 – March 14. Entitled I Can Imagine You without Your Home, the photography exhibition will explore how the invasion of private space manifests itself in the psyche of people who experience conflict. Taking a step back in time is Ala Ebtekar, whose meticulous paintings, drawings and installations imagine what the present day would look like if it collided with history and mythology. His Elsewhen exhibition will continue until March 8 at The Third Line gallery.

Wild escapes Strap on a headlamp, tap into your inner Indiana Jones and gear up to experience the nocturnal mysteries of the rainforest… right here in Dubai! Ideal for kids of all ages and nature enthusiasts alike, Night Safaris will run at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo until February 29. And when it’s time to tame it down, head to the First Group Theatre from February 23-25 for the stage adaptation of children's tale The Tiger Who Came To Tea, packed with oodles of magic, sing-a-long songs and clumsy chaos. February 23-25 will also see The Animals and Children Took To the Streets staged at DUCTAC, a wickedly twisted journey of live music, performance and storytelling about the much-feared city of Bayou.

Billy Ocean

Feel the beat Regardless of your musical genre of choice, there’s a gig worth marking on your calendar this month. Kicking things off will be alternative hip hop group Arrested Development, which returns to Dubai on February 2 at Chi. Billy Ocean and The Christians will take over The Irish Village on February 3, bringing along everyone-knows-them tunes such as Caribbean Queen, Harvest For The World and Hooverville. The Swiss Prix Walo award-winning vocal group Phenomen – Voci d’Oro takes the stage for an evening of entertainment, delivering classic hits from all eras on February 4 at DUCTAC. Named the Best Act in the World Today at the Q Awards, Brit indie quartet Kasabian will perform live at the Sevens Stadium on February 10; expect to hear hit singles such as Empire, Shoot the Runner and Club Foot, as well as songs from their latest album. World Cancer Day

World Nutella Day

Valentine's Day

Leap year

Each year, over 12.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer, while 7.6 million die from the disease. The burden is expected to reach 17 million deaths by 2030, with the most rapid increases occurring in low- and middle-income countries. World Cancer Day is an annually held initiative that unites the world in the fight against the global cancer epidemic, raises quality of life for cancer patients and educates people on taking simple steps to prevent the disease. Themed ‘Together it is possible’, this year’s edition hopes for every person, organisation and government individually doing their part in order to reduce premature deaths from cancer and other non-communicable diseases by 25 per cent by 2025.

With the 6th edition of World Nutella Day marked on our calendars, we finally have a legitimate excuse to gorge (guilt-free) on the world’s favourite chocolate-hazelnut spread. This day was created in 2007 when Sara Rosso, an American writer living in Italy, questioned why there was no day set aside to appreciate Nutella. Devoted fans worldwide proclaim their love by blogging creative recipes, uploading picture collages, hosting tastings and even writing haiku. But Athena Hohenberg won’t be joining us in waxing lyrical about Italy’s edible treasure: the San Diego resident recently filed a lawsuit against the manufacturers, claiming that it’s falsely marketed as part of a balanced breakfast for children. More left for us, then?

Love it or hate it, this “Hallmark Holiday” is a hard one to ignore. While celebrating Valentine's Day with flowers, chocolates, candlelit dinners and jewellery gains popularity worldwide, its origins remain shrouded in mystery. According to one popular legend, Saint Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives, he forbade young men to marry in an effort to bolster his army. Valentine realised the injustice of the decree, and defied Claudius by performing marriages for young couples in secret. When Valentine's defiance was discovered, he was executed on February 14 in the year 269.

2012 is a leap year, so let’s take a minute to understand it. According to timeanddate.com, “Leap years are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the earth's revolutions around the sun. The mean time between two vernal equinoxes is about 365.2422 days long. Using a calendar with 365 days would result in a loss of 0.2422 days. After 100 years, this calendar would be over 24 days ahead of the season, which is not desirable. By adding a leap year every fourth year, the difference between the calendar and the seasons can be reduced significantly, and the calendar will align with the seasons more accurately.” Simple enough? Just remember to buy birthday presents for the leaplings in your life.

SOMETHING’S COOKING AT DX B

With the decadent array of new dining choices at Dubai International, 2012 is off to a delicious start. (Yes, that resolution will have to wait until next year.) WORDS SAMIA QAIYUM

CHARLEY’S GRILLED SUBS Philly Cheese Steak, BBQ Cheddar Steak, Double Cheese Steak… did somebody just say meat craving? The globally loved Charley's Grilled Subs continues with its plans for world domination with a new outpost in the food court, its 15th in the country. Famed for its delectable sandwiches, delicious sauces and tangy condiments, the American chain also caters to you less meaty types with options like Chicken Buffalo,

TERMINAL 1 POTBELLY SANDWICH SHOP Meet our favourite export all the way from the Windy City! With two outlets in the city, Potbelly took no time in winning the hearts of Dubai’s residents… and has now set up shop at DXB. Choose from a variety of toasty warm sandwiches, served on your choice of regular or multigrain wheat bread. And for the carbophobes out there, they can also be ordered "thin-cut" style, in which one third of the bread is removed. Also on offer? Soup, made-to-order salads, handdipped shakes, frozen yoghurt smoothies and freshly baked cookies. A word of advice: start your experience with the ‘Wreck’, an unfortunately-named but delicious sub made with premium roast beef, salami, oven roasted turkey breast, smoked turkey ham and melted Swiss cheese. 20

BOB'S FISH & CHIPS The longstanding love affair with fish and chips doesn’t just concern the fry-loving Brits anymore… seems like the rest of uws are catching on to the simple pleasures of crisp, lightly battered fish paired with chunky, golden brown fries. But at Bob's Fish & Chips, that’s not all, folks. Also on the menu is the finest in what quintessential British comfort food has to offer: donner kebabs, chicken & mushroom pie, beef sausages, haggis, baked potatoes with toppings galore and sides such as mushy peas, onion rings and baked beans.

Chicken Teriyaki, Turkey Cheddar Melt and Philly Veggie. The gourmet fries can be topped with molten cheddar cheese sauce, ranch or barbecue dressing and sampling the freshly squeezed lemonade is practically obligatory here.

SAJ EXPRESS As you head out of the city, bid farewell by sampling some mouth-watering Middle Eastern cuisine. Arabic food in Dubai tends to take its cues from other parts of the region, particularly Lebanon. Think creamy hummus, savoury

flatbreads topped with ingredients of your choice, crunchy fattoush salads and succulent chargrilled kebabs. The immensely popular Saj Express is the perfect place to indulge in authentic Lebanese food, and its chicken shawarmas remain the first choice for foodies throughout the city. The bread is cooked on the saj (a traditional, iron-dome-topped oven) and generously stuffed with juicy, herbinfused chicken. What’s not to like?

begs the question: isn’t it time to branch out a little? The UK’s largest coffeehouse chain has been churning out branches all over the city, with recent additions opening at T2 Arrivals and T3 Departures. And while it’s the aromatic café au lait, cappuccino or mocha that makes your day complete, the selection of sandwiches, salads, wraps, pastas and panini is also guaranteed to please.

panini, wraps and pasta salads to sweet tooth staples like tiramisu. Weight watching? Look for recent menu additions such as the Low Fat Blackberry & Bran Muffin, Low Fat Cranberry Slice, Tuna & Cannelini Bean Salad and Tuna Niçoise Salad.

SWEET FACTORY

PAUL

O'BRIENS If you’re craving a dessert with that certain je ne sais quoi, make your way to Paul cafe. The French patisserie has been indulging tastebuds in Terminal 3 for a while now…but why should Emirates passengers have all the fun? The new outpost in Terminal 1 offers a tantalizing spread of pies, tarts, cakes, croissants, chocolate éclairs, macaroons and more… so expect to be baffled by the sheer choice.

SEGAFREDO ZANETTI Just a café, you say? So much more, we say. Italians have coffee down to a fine art… and specialising in this art is Segafredo, next to Gate 125. Founded over 35 years ago, there are currently over 300 outlets of this thriving chain across the world… all with the simple mission of introducing humanity to the signature taste and culture of true Italian espresso through its premium coffee bean blends. Diners can also choose from breakfast, soups, salads, Italian sandwiches, bruschetta, freshly made hardwheat pastas and daily chef's specials.

TERMINAL 2 COSTA COFFEE Starbucks loyalists, listen up. According to a recently conducted blind taste test, 62% of coffee lovers preferred the Flat White at Costa to its Starbucks counterpart… which

Light meals made with simple, fresh ingredients… it may sound easy enough, but ‘healthy fast food’ still seems like an oxymoron. Fortunately for those looking to eat healthily on the go, Ireland’s favourite sandwich spot is now also open in T2. Admittedly, names like Toasties, Tripledeckers, Wrappos and Shambos don’t scream serious, but this joint is all about traditional, specialty and made-to-order sandwiches made with preservative-free bread and the fresh, premium fillings. The new outlet also carries a wide variety of gourmet coffees, Fairtrade Organic Tea, tossed salads, fresh fruit juices, smoothies and iced drinks. Joining in the fun is T3, which recently welcomed an O'Briens outlet near Gate 215.

It may not technically be a factory, but packs enough sugar to keep even Willy Wonka satisfied. Meet Sweet Factory, the city’s best pick 'n' mix for all things confectionery. The brightly-coloured stand is the perfect stop for an impulse purchase of candy, lollipops, chocolate, jelly beans, gumballs, gummi bears, jelly beans, malt balls, licorice, mints, marshmallows… and more! Pay a visit and feel like a kid in a candy store, pun intended.

BEN'S COOKIES

TERMINAL 3 CAFFÈ NERO Reminiscent of a cosy living room, this premium Italian-style cafe has just opened up next to the skytrain, satisfying your beverage cravings with traditional espresso-based drinks, iced lattes, fruit boosters and specialty coffees. As the only coffee house to include two shots of houseblend espresso in every coffee-based drink, Caffè Nero is easily the pitstop of choice for discerning coffee lovers. Accompanying the mix is freshly prepared food infused with flavours of Italy, ranging from toasted

Believe in love at first bite? You might have to after a knock-your-socks-off encounter with flavours like white chocolate and cranberry, triple chocolate chunk, lemon, coconut, praline and milk chocolate, peanut butter, ginger and dark chocolate, and oatmeal raisin at Ben's Cookies. Discreetly located by Gate 205, this hidden treasure serves warm cookies with crisp edges and soft, gooey centres... all baked freshly on site. Succumb to the temptation, and remember, milk is optional. dv FEBRUARY 2012

NOW SERVE THIS With an all-star line-up making its way to the city this month, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is set to mark its 20th anniversary in style. Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect. WORDS SAMIA QAIYUM

I

mpossible to define but highly palpable, there’s just something about the energy in Dubai towards the end of February. The city is placed in the global spotlight as the highly anticipated Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships – the Middle East’s only ATP 500 tournament – plays host to a fortnight of world-class sporting action starring the best of the best: eight of the world’s top ten women’s players and seven of the top ten men’s players vying for the title and a share of the $4 million total prize purse. Gasp-inducing shots, great sportsmanship, stiff competition, unexpected results and excited fans will all converge at the prestigious Dubai Tennis Stadium in Garhoud. This edition will follow previous years’ formats with the $2 million WTA Tour event taking place from February 20-25, followed by the $2 million ATP World Tour 500 tournament from February 27 – March 3. The 2012 line-up has shaped up to be as strong as previous years, with highranking players scoping out the skills and techniques of up-and-comers. Included in

SPORTS IN DUBAI

the eight featured in the WTA event will be the top three: current world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka, who enjoyed the best season of her career in 2011. French Open champion Li Na and US Open winner Smamantha Stosur will also bring their A-game to the city with hopes of claiming the coveted trophy. With the sensation of holding up the trophy on the centre court still alive and well, Wozniacki is understandably looking forward to returning to Dubai. “I really like Dubai and I really like playing there. I have good memories of last year; I’d lost the No. 1 ranking and it was during that week that I got it back,” she recently said. Over on the men’s side, the top two seeds will be striving not only for the title, but also a piece of tournament history. Last year’s edition saw Novak Djokovic win his third successive Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title when he defeated Roger Federer 6-3 6-3, marking his 20th career title and preventing the former four-

time champion claiming his first title since 2007. In total, the 2011 season saw Djokovic – currently world No. 1 – sweep three Grand Slams and five Masters Series titles. He’s now set his sights on becoming the first player in the 20-year history of the Dubai tournament to win four consecutive titles. Federer, however, may find his confidence renewed considering 2011 drew to a victorious close, with him winning the seasonending ATP World Tour finals in London. He, too, will seek to make history by becoming the first player to lift the trophy five times. Commenting on his rate of success in Dubai, he said: “I’ve won four times but it hasn’t always been the most successful tournament for me. I’ve actually gone back and forth, sometimes losing early, then coming back and winning a lot and then getting sick or injured. But when I did play well, I played great so I’m always happy to come back to Dubai. I feel like I’ve gotten really strong crowd support over the years not just because of the player I am, but also because of the success I’ve had and the kind of people I know there.”

Giving the two big guns a run for their money will be Scot Andy Murray and Wimbledon semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Other contenders for the title include 2010 Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, American number one Mardy Fish (appearing in Dubai for the first time) and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro along with number nine-ranked Janko Tipsarevic. "Once again, we are thrilled to announce such an incredible line up of stars coming to the tournament," said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free. "This guarantees that no matter which day or session you attend, you can be assured of seeing world-class tennis action in both the men's and women's tournaments," he added. It was also recently announced by the WTA that DDF has extended its longstanding global sponsorship of women’s tennis through 2014. The tournament is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. dv FEBRUARY 2012

Gaucho

Gaucho

HAUTE & HAPPENING With haunts like Embassy, Buddha Bar and Nobu at our doorsteps, you’d think Dubai-ites would be slightly jaded by the idea of yet another imported concept in dining and nightlife… but we’re not, so let’s meet some of our favourite doppelgangers. WORDS SAMIA QAIYUM

GAUCHO A TASTE OF ARGENTINA Calling all carnivores. Adamant about being referred to as an “Argentine restaurant” (as opposed to a steakhouse) is Gaucho Dubai… and understandably so. Authentic fare such as ceviche, causitas, tirraditos, empanadas and over 200 Argentinean wines feature on the menu, only to be outshone by the restaurant’s raison d'être: renowned steak cuts made from grass-fed, Argentine-certified Angus beef. Accompanying the upmarket meatfest is the kitschy-yetsomehow-tasteful décor of cowhide walls, mirror-ball lights, white leather furniture and impossibly high ceilings. The first restaurant in the Gaucho chain opened in London, and went on to expand internationally with its outpost in Beirut before gracing our shores.

ZUMA A TASTE OF JAPAN Inspired by the Japanese izakaya style of dining, food at Zuma is served to share, bringing a touch of informality to the sleek, minimalist interiors. Like the original in London, Zuma Dubai serves contemporary Japanese cuisine alongside old favourites like sushi, salmon and tuna tartar, and tempura. Friday brunch is practically a 24

DUBAI VOYAGER

Zuma

sacred ritual here: guests can feast on options from the sushi counter, hot starters from the robata grill and selections from a deluxe dessert platter… all accompanied by laidback weekend grooves, courtesy of the resident DJ. Unsurprisingly, the black cod continues to win rave reviews by the restaurant’s hip patrons, who range from models with small appetites to businessmen with oversized expense accounts.

NIGHTLIFE 101

MAYA A TASTE OF MEXICO Yes, we all secretly love Taco Bell. No, it doesn’t count as Mexican food. And proving exactly this point is Maya, the multiple award-winning restaurant that combines Latin ingredients with international flavours and contemporary culinary techniques to create an enlightened – and unexpected – dining experience. And the man behind our introduction to the complexity of authentic Mexican cuisine? Acclaimed chef Richard Sandoval, a leader in the upscale Latin culinary movement and the force behind the recently opened Toro Toro. He currently runs over 26 restaurants across the globe; Maya Dubai is modelled after his flagship modern Mexican restaurant in New York.

Hakkasan

HAKKASAN

The Ivy

A TASTE OF CHINA Peking duck with Royal Beluga caviar, black cod in champagne sauce and grilled Wagyu beef with King soya sauce... meet Cantonese cuisine at its finest. The iconic Hakkasan was founded in London’s West End, and became the first Chinese restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star. Now its sixth outpost globally is up and running in Dubai… without a lantern for miles. Instead, it caters to the tastebuds of the elite in a mysteriously elegant setting of muted lighting, moody music and water features. If weather permits, dine on the luscious outdoor terrace, which features cascading wooden pavilions surrounded by a wall of vegetation.

THE IVY A TASTE OF THE UK While it is celebs and theatregoers frequenting The Ivy in London’s West End, its Dubai namesake hosts the who’s who of the business community… not to mention, grants the British expat community a home away from home. With oak panelling, stained glass windows and leather seating, the restaurant’s first international outlet stays true to the original: it serves a brasserie-style menu of Ivy’s longstanding classics such as shepherd’s pie and Thai baked sea bass, which stand alongside dishes accented with a feel of Arabia. Perfect for the executive on the go, The Ivy Dubai also serves a regularly changing business lunch (a twocourse set menu) and recently launched a Friday brunch.

CAFFÈ FLORIAN A TASTE OF ITALY Established in 1720, Caffé Florian is a veritable symbol of Venice and easily a contender for the title of world’s oldest coffee house. While its Dubai counterpart can’t quite boast a clientele quite as illustrious – Lord Byron, Marcel Proust and Charles Dickens were regulars at the original – it does possess the ability to bring a sense of oldworld charm to the bustling DIFC Caffè Florian area. Pastel colours, mosaics, plush velvets and an exquisitely handcrafted chandelier complete the Venetian-inspired décor. It has fast become a favourite lunch spot amongst yuppies jonesing for Italian specialties, coffees and desserts. As of late, the café’s offering has expanded to include an in-house band and a selection of Italian wines.

Mahiki

MAHIKI JUMEIRAH BEACH HOTEL The London hotspots keeping pouring in. Mahiki has finally set up shop in our bustling metropolis, calling for an end to nightlife elitism. Laidback is the name of the game at this Polynesian-themed club, so don’t expect to see VIP rooms or a stuffy door policy. Instead, you’ll be greeted with whimsical décor (complete with bamboo furnishings, tiki torches and tropical flowers), an eclectic mix of tunes and delicious fresh fruit cocktails… all the ingredients needed for a night of unadulterated fun. Celebrity patrons at the original London outpost include everyone from Paris Hilton to Pippa Middleton and Holly Branson to Beyonce. And like the original, Mahiki Dubai’s signature night will be Mahiki Mondays, which will be full of theatre and special events.

EMBASSY DUBAI GROSVENOR HOUSE TOWER TWO Sleek, sassy and offering stunning views across The Palm down to the Burj Al Arab: that’s Embassy Dubai. Located across three floors, the recently opened members' club is a veritable playground for the FEBRUARY 2012

years in a row since its opening in 2005. Like others on this list, it’s a celebrity favourite, with the likes of Kate Moss, Rihanna and Gwyneth Paltrow spotted. Perched on the first floor, Mo*Vida Dubai has two bar areas, 38 VIP tables and a capacity of 600. Most tables look out onto the club floor… but if a little privacy is what you’re after, the exclusive private area seats 40. The brilliantly black dance floor provides great contrast to the allgold ceiling, which is accentuated by pink and purple lighting. The real attraction, however, is resident DJ John C, who has arrived all the way from VIP Room in St Tropez to spin commercial house and R&B.

dining-and-dancing glitterati of Dubai… much like the star-studded affair witnessed on opening night. The top floor has a restaurant that serves contemporary European cuisine while the middle has champagne and vodka bars as well as a private room — nicknamed James Bond's playground by Mark Fuller, owner and founder of Embassy London. Just below is the breathtaking main bar and LED dance floor, essentially where the action happens. The opulent venue was transplanted straight from London’s club scene, the original opening in the early 1900s. BUDDHA BAR GROSVENOR HOUSE DUBAI It needs no introduction and guarantees a relaxed yet trendy night out, every time. Somewhere between a restaurant, bar and lounge, Buddha Bar is spread across two levels and offers an ambience to suit every taste. The lounge music here takes its cue from the original outlet in Paris, and refreshingly, is far from deafening. Oozing sophistication are the lush Asian-inspired interiors: think wrought-iron balustrades, red chandeliers, mahogany furniture, oriental art objects… and the signature four-metre Buddha statue, of course. Chefs trained at Buddha Bar Paris blend flavours from Thailand, China and Japan with seasonal Arabian ingredients to create light bites that are served platter-style. For more secluded seating, find the sushi bar with tatami-style seating behind the main dining room. According to the company’s website, Buddha Bar Hotel will make its regional debut in Abu Dhabi in 2015. dv

DESTINATION Dallas is every bit the world-class destination, with plenty of Southern charm and hospitality. WORDS JOANNE MOLINA

C

owboy boots, line dancing and steaks as large as the state of Texas – all tenets of Dallas, one of the 10 largest cities in the United States and a southern destination where “bigger is better”. Often called “America’s favourite city”, this land of the urban cowboy is home to more than 40 of the richest Americans, creating a locale where cosmopolitan tastes are infused with the rugged, entrepreneurial spirit of the Wild West. It is the birthplace of the infamous American retailer Neiman Marcus and NorthPark Center, a premier international shopping destination. It is also home to a world championship rodeo and the legendary Dallas Cowboys American football team – both of which are just as adored as the city’s European-style five-star hotels and restaurants. In the “Big D”, you’re just as likely to see a Ferrari 575 M Maranello as a 10-gallon hat.

PAINT THE TOWN

Don’t get spooked by Dallas’s nightlife options. All first-time visitors to Dallas should start their journey at Ghost Bar, which is perched atop the W Hotel in Victory Park (also the location of the House of Blues and the American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team and Dallas Stars hockey team). This 33rd-floor nightlife destination offers a spectacular view of the city’s skyline, as well as world-class DJs and live acts. A popular venue for celebrities, including Justin Timberlake, Lily Tomlin, Jamie Foxx and Clint Eastwood, the jet-setter vibe of Ghost Bar will make you feel like a star.

Located in the Dallas Arts District, the Dallas Art Museum is home to more than 24,000 works of art dating from ancient to modern times. But what’s truly singular is The Reves Collection, which is housed in an elaborate 1,393.5-square-metre reproduction of the Villa La Pausa in France, created

by Coco Chanel in 1927, where the works were originally displayed. Even some of the original furniture has come along for the ride. The 1,400 paintings, sculptures and works on paper Reves collected include work by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gaughin, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh. The museum is also adjacent to the Nasher Sculpture Center, designed by Renzo Piano.

THE CLASSICS

Whether you fancy Bruckner or Mozart, Dallas has created a world-class classical music scene. For more than a decade the Dallas Symphony Orchestra has called the Morton H Meyerson Symphony Center home. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect IM Pei, the centrepiece of the contemporary structure is the McDermott Concert Hall, a European "shoebox" style music chamber, designed to establish intimacy between performer and audience. It is ranked as one of the world’s great orchestral halls and offers over 325 concert hall events, 20-30 banquets, 200 photo and film shoots, and more than 800 hours of rehearsal and recording activity.

4

CULTURAL CLOUT

Whether you are in the mood for dance, music, art or sculpture more than a dozen arts venues in the Dallas Arts District will leave you entertained and enlightened. As the largest arts district in the country, it is home to the very best visual, performing and developing arts, including the Annette Strauss Artist Square, the Belo Mansion/Dallas Bar Association, Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Dallas Museum of Art, the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House, Dallas Theater Center, the AT&T Center for the Performing Arts and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Outdoor festivals, lectures and performances make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon or a long weekend.

by the Zagat guide year after year, and winner of the AAA Five Diamond Award for an unprecedented 22 consecutive years, it has been recognised as one the US’s finest culinary destinations. Since 1910 it has been welcoming guests with exceptional service, romantic atmosphere and world-class French fare under high ceilings, hand-blown chandeliers and old-world opulence.

HEAD OF STATE

One of the US’s most beloved presidents, John F Kennedy, is also one of Dallas’s most revered. Dealey Plaza, the National Historic Landmark and park where JFK was assassinated, pays homage to his legacy with their Sixth Floor Museum. Nearly six million people have visited the top two floors of the sevenstorey former Book Depository and taken a step back in time – because of its landmark status, almost nothing has been altered in the immediate area, including street lights and street signs and buildings along the plaza used in 1963. Specialising in contemporary global cuisine with Pacific Rim influences, it was the first restaurant concept of celebrity chef Ken Rathbun. His enticing epicurean creations include chipotle molasses glazed Texas bobwhite quail and grilled maple leaf duck breast with spiced kabocha puree. From foie gras to bento boxes, Rathbun has spent the past 10 years ensuring that Abacus has been the five-star dining site of choice in Dallas. SHOPPER’S PARADISE

Named as one of the seven wonders of the retail world and selected as the first shopping mall ever to be featured in Vogue magazine, NorthPark Center is the destination for those who want to sample the city’s luxury wares. Designed by architects Eero Saarinen and Kevin Roche in the early Sixties, NorthPark’s 235 stores include staples such as Barneys, Oscar de la Renta, Roberto Cavalli, Hervé Léger, Valentino, Tod's, Salvatore Ferragamo, DeBeers, Gucci, Versace and Louis Vuitton. But what makes this shopping venue special is its tradition of showing works by world-renowned artists, including Andy Warhol and Frank Stella.

TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS

For those who want their own Dallas adventure – and are brave enough to try riding a mechanical bull – look no further than Gilley’s. This Dallas institution is the home of the urban cowboy legacy and hosts an 8,361-square-metre events venue loved by locals and tourists alike for its authentic country atmosphere and urban vibe. In addition to bull riding, patrons can see a concert, take dance lessons and grab a bite at their restaurant – and then do it all over again at the complex’s new Jack Daniels Saloon. dv

It is a Dallas hotel legend: The Adolphus isn’t only a five-star luxury hotel; it is one of the city’s most beloved places. Amid the regal Flemish tapestries and an ornately carved Victorian Steinway once owned by the Guggenheim family, the presence of past guests and decades of over-the-top elegance saturate every gilded corner. For more than a century, the 21 storeys of historic beaux-arts splendour that critics named “the most beautiful building west of Venice” have drawn Queen Elizabeth II, the Vanderbilts, Oscar de la Renta, Donald Trump, U2 and baseball legend Babe Ruth.

Mansion on Turtle Creek If you want to feel like you’re part of the Dallas family, look no further than this five-star treasure: The Mansion on Turtle Creek. This former estate of Texas cotton mogul Sheppard W King still retains the intimate ambience of the private residence it once was with its meticulously restored interiors, hand-carved fireplaces, marble floors and stained-glass windows. A recent redesign of 143 rooms ensures the best of contemporary amenities among all the historic grandeur.

Starting February 2, Emirates will operate non-stop daily flights from Dubai to Dallas-Fort Worth.

ON THE

SCENE

Time is of the essence when one goes into cardiac arrest; there is an 85 per cent chance that effective treatment within the first few minutes will lead to survival. And the team behind ensuring that every second counts? The Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services (DCAS), a department established to consolidate the city’s ambulance services (previously provided jointly by Dubai Police and the Department of Health and Medical Services). Naturally, it has a dedicated division to cater to the passengers at Dubai International, the world’s fourth busiest airport. Handling an average of 40 cases per day, the DCAS fleet deployed at Dubai Airports is one of the largest in the world: 11 stations, 2 ambulances and roughly 135 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, response times recorded are excellent: 75 per cent of cases witness only three minutes or less needed to reach a passenger in need of help. It coordinates with Dubai Police, airport authorities and other government organisations to provide medical services for both, passengers and employees of Dubai Airports. According to Khalifa Hassan Abdulkarim Al Darrai, CEO of DCAS, a day-to-day monitoring system that audits and analyses support and intervention rates is essential for quality control purposes. “It provides a complete picture of the emergency cases treated onsite vs. those transported to a dedicated facility. Travellers may indicate medical problems like chest or abdominal pain, neurological issues due to stress, respiratory issues such as asthma, minor trauma caused by spills or sprains, chronic diseases or suffer cardiac distress,” he explains. DCAS is dedicated to maintaining the highest possible standards by regularly updating protocols, staff training and equipment; in fact, the unit was one of the first in the world to routinely use methoxyflurane gas inhalers for rapid pain relief. Additional staff and ambulances are dispatched to the airport during periods of higher passenger traffic, such as Hajj or the Dubai Shopping Festival. The department utilises a state-of-the-art software called ePCR to collect patient information and care details, and electronically transmit this data from the airport to the nearest hospital in order to prevent treatment delay. Interestingly enough, the DCAS is also the name behind the Guinness Record for the world’s Largest Ambulance. Measuring over 20 metres in length, it has a combined treatment and transport capacity of 123 patients and staff and is used in large-scale casualty situations. Akin to a hospital-on-wheels, it’s the first of its kind in the region and even includes an operating theatre onboard. Looking toward the future, efforts are underway at the DCAS to cope with increasing traffic into Dubai with the start of operations at DWC: an additional six stations will be gradually added at the new airport in the months ahead. 34

A NEW appROACH Navigating the world’s fourth busiest airport just got easier, courtesy of the mobile application recently launched by Dubai Airports for Apple and Android devices. Called myDXB, the free app provides real-time information on flights and gate numbers as well as way-finding to locate passenger facilities across the three terminals of Dubai International. “The idea behind creating myDXB was to simply communicate the availability and location of commercial services to millions of passengers that pass through our terminals each month. The application is also a great way to plan ahead, enabling passengers to maximize their time with us, and direct them towards services from currency exchange to their favourite retail or food brands,” said Eugene Barry, Senior Vice President of Commercial Unit at Dubai Airports. Barry added that Dubai Airports was constantly looking at ways to make the passenger journey more convenient, and innovative technologies are a natural choice for achieving that objective. “We understand the connection between way-finding and customer experience, and this application is the first step in offering our customers tools to plan their time at Dubai International, and to ultimately influence behaviour and spend,” he said. Built with a simple interface, myDXB can be instantly downloaded on iPhones and iPads as well as on the wide range of Android phones and tablets. While Dubai International offers free Wi-Fi Internet connectivity throughout the airport, the directory element of the application has been designed to operate offline so that more customers can access and benefit from it.

Fifty and flourishing Low-cost carrier flydubai is gearing up to launch operations to its 50th destination: Bishkek, capital of the Kyrgyz Republic. The twice-weekly service will begin on February 7, making flydubai the first UAE-based airline to offer direct flights to the Kyrgyz Republic. The airline’s global network has expanded to 28 countries across the GCC, Middle East, Africa, Indian subcontinent, Asia and Central and Eastern Europe in just over two years. Commenting on the launch, flydubai CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith said: “We are proud to launch our latest services, bringing our destinations in the former Soviet Union to 12. It is also a significant milestone for us as the 50th destination we have

announced… quite an achievement since our first flight in June 2009. We have already launched operations to a number of cities in Central Asia and we believe Bishkek will be just as well received. We are confident it will prove popular with people seeking alternative travel destinations, as well as offering people in the Kyrgyz Republic a gateway to the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and Africa through the flydubai network.” The Kyrgyz Republic has opened its economy to foreign investment in key industries including metallurgy and is developing its tourism potential. The country also has a growing presence in the UAE, thanks to a 3,000-strong expatriate population.

Recording 51 million passengers in our 51st year of operations may be somewhat coincidental but it speaks volumes of the momentum building at one of the world’s fastest growing international hubs. In a year that was characterised by economic uncertainty, political instability and high oil prices, passenger growth continued unabated driven by new routes and additional frequencies as airlines capitalised on Dubai’s attractiveness as a business and tourism destination and efficiency as a transfer hub. That trend will continue in 2012 as our two largest airlines – Emirates and flydubai – are set to receive additional aircraft throughout the year.

GAME ON With world-class sporting events like the Dubai World Cup, Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, the city captures the attention of sports fans across the globe… and at the forefront of it all is Dubai Duty Free.

With the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in full swing this month, February marks the start of the sporting ‘season’ in the city. The PGA tournament attracts the top golfers in the game; Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Fred Couples and Seve Ballesteros have all won. As an official supporter of the tournament, Dubai Duty Free (DDF) will entertain guests in style at the Emirates Golf Club and conduct the draw for the Finest Surprise promotion to win a Mercedes Benz S500 on its final day. The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will take place from February 20 – March 3. Owned and organised by the airport retailer, it will welcome eight of the world’s top ten women players and seven of the top ten men’s players to the Dubai Tennis Stadium. Each will vie for the title and a share of the $4 million total prize purse. This year’s edition will follow in the footsteps of an exciting 2011, which celebrated the world’s No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki overcoming Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1 6-3 to win the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and become the first Danish player to lift the title. Novak Djokovic won his third successive Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title last year when he defeated top seed Roger Federer 6-3 6-3, marking his 20th career title and preventing the former four-time champion claiming his first title since 2007. Away from the hard court and golfing greens, much awareness is also created by the operation’s involvement in horseracing. On March 31, DDF will sponsor the $5 million Group 1 Dubai Duty Free race – a major race on Dubai World Cup night – that was won by Presvis in 2011. Visitors to the event will also have the chance to win a luxury car in the everpopular Dubai Duty Free World Cup Surprise promotion on the day. With horseracing playing an important part in DDF’s portfolio of sponsorship, it will be present at Newbury for the start of the flat race season in the UK from April 20-21. The operation will return to Newbury in September for the Dubai Duty Free International Race Day. Looking ahead to the rest of the sporting year, DDF will race once again at the Curragh, Ireland on June 30 for the fifth running of the 36

Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. Since taking over the title sponsorship of this major European race, the airport retailer has created a weekend festival of racing and social activities, which will include the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Golf Classic followed by the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Summer Ball. DDF will also return to Ascot on August 11 to sponsor the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. This unique event is, for once, less about the horses and more about the world’s top jockeys competing for a share of the spoils. The support and sponsorship of local and international sporting events has been an integral part of DDF’s marketing strategy since 1983, proving to be a highly successful platform for the global promotion of Dubai and its world-class sporting, leisure and business facilities.

IN TRANSIT WITH

How do you explore a new city? Unsurprisingly, I always get a really good travel book. I particularly like Eyewitness guides; they have details about every aspect of a city. I like to explore a city’s culture in the morning, have a meal and then spend the afternoon and evening doing something completely different. I wouldn’t spend the whole day sightseeing because there’s a danger that you won’t enjoy it.

Favourite travel destination? I love Istanbul. I think the city is probably the nearest place where East and West meet, absolutely and perfectly. I think the people are wonderful, there is so much culture and the food in the street markets was fabulous. Everything about it is so real.

Best city in the world for a literature enthusiast?

MADAME BIBLIOPHILE Her presence has forever changed the literary landscape of Dubai. She co-founded Al Ittihad School and the Magrudy’s bookshop chain, is Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature (EAFoL) and the brains behind Jerboa Books, and was recently awarded the Order of the British Empire for her years of service to education and British literature in the UAE. Meet the infinitely charming Isobel Abulhoul. There was next to nothing in Dubai when you relocated in 1968. What prompted the move? I’m from Cambridge, England… that’s where I met my husband. I came out here to meet his family. It took me 12 hours by plane to get here on the old BOAC. It stopped in Lebanon, Kuwait and Qatar before landing to Dubai.

How would you describe Dubai circa 1968 to someone in Cambridge? In those days, I’d say: “You need to get on your magic carpet with Aladdin and be transported to another world.” When I arrived, it was night-time in December. It was dark, but there were stars in the sky. It smelt sandy, exotic, slightly spicy… there was a real oriental feel to it. I absolutely fell in love with Dubai.

In contrast, how would you describe the Dubai of today? It’s more difficult for visitors to discover the true heart of Dubai. Back then, anyone could immerse themselves in Arabic culture, food and customs. Now, the balance is slightly different. We have this incredible 21st century 66

DUBAI VOYAGER

city with skyscrapers, the Burj Khalifa, the metro, the world’s biggest shopping mall. Who would’ve imagined all of this back in the 70s?

Biggest misconception about the city? That everything is new. They’re missing the point if they don’t dig deeper and find the real culture of Dubai. It's there, but you have to look harder nowadays. The Bastakiya district has little alleyways that you can wander around, get down to the creek, go through the covered bazaar and find little eateries. These are the kinds of things people should do when they come here. They should take an abra, explore the spice souks and visit the Gold Souk.

At the moment, Edinburgh, because of the Edinburgh International Festival that goes on for three weeks over the summer. It’s dotted all over the city, and you have the added advantage that it’s not just books; they have the Fringe Festival and art events as well.

How would you evaluate the success of the first three editions of the EAFoL? I’m constantly amazed at how much recognition it has gotten in just four years. So many people have heard about it, there’s been a lot of media interest in it. I think that’s because Dubai is not necessarily a city that people would associate with literary culture. Also, there’s no other pure literary festival in the region so when it started, we were fulfilling a huge gap in the market.

What ingredients make for an unputdownable book? The books I love best are those that I can read again, and again… and again. It means that you can return to them and discover new things each time. For a book to stay with me, its characters live in my imagination long after I’ve finished… and I wonder about them.

What is your favourite book? For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway.

My world travels have taught me how interesting the world is… and that you can never run out of places to visit. But you have to embrace it. When you go somewhere, try and learn something about where you are going, about its history. Try different things; don’t just stick to the tourist route.
