DUBAI’S SMILES Dubaians have much to celebrate this year as we move into the second month of the year wrapped in optimism and positive vibes. According to the latest Gallup Poll, people in the UAE are amongst the happiest in the world. The poll included 148 countries and questioned 1,000 people in each, placing Panama and Paraguay as the top two happiest places. The UAE took 25th place, alongside with the UK and Mali. While the UAE took the third place in the Middle East, Kuwait and Oman are said to have the highest happiness levels in the region. Meanwhile, the charismatic Dubai leader H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai – who recently celebrated his seventh Accession Day anniversary – has been named as one of the 10 most-followed world leaders on Twitter, with some one million followers. The World Leaders on Twitter Ranking Report was conducted in December 2012 by the US Digital Policy Council, which analysed the social media presence of 123 out of 164 world leaders. US President Barack Obama topped the list with some 25 million Twitter followers. Sheikh Mohammed, who is said to have 1.3 million Twitter followers, has been using the social media platform to inform his followers of his activities, including the opening of the world’s only A380-dedicated Concourse A at Dubai International, and the opening of the new covered walkway that links Burj Khalifa metro station with The Dubai Mall. Meanwhile, cyclists are enjoying the new 50-kilometre-long two-way dedicated cycling track that was opened recently. The Dubai Cycling Course, built by the RTA, is to be a major feature in the Dubai Tour 2014 – an event organised by the International Cycling Union. The special provision for cyclists is also part of the city’s goal of improving road safety and sensitivity towards eco issues. Happy travels…. dv The dv team

Dubai Show Jumping Championship 2013 The world’s best show jumpers, including Olympic medallists, returned to the city for the dubai Show Jumping Championship 2013, held at the Emirates Equestrian Center (EEC) from 31 January – 2 Feb. The thrilling three-day event is a part of a series of four FEi World Cup qualification shows. asian Games rider, abdullah al Marri; ireland’s returning Olympic bronze medallist, Cian O’Connor; Gulfbased riders from the arab League and many other leading jumping stars made sure that the competition was intense and gripping.

THE WEiGHT lOSS SHOW Weight loss and fun never went together but The Weight Loss Show changed that equation. The 4th edition of the show held on 1-2 February at the dubai international Marine Club saw over 10,000 people attend the fun-filled event. Free talks, cool workouts, nutritious yet delicious food and simple and innovative solutions to live a healthier life were profiled at the event. a kids' zone kept the little ones occupied while adults learnt a fitter approach to living.

WilD WaDi'S SWim BurJ al araB 2013 a great swim, fantastic sights and good cause all came together at the Wild Wadi’s Swim burj al arab 2013 edition. Over 600 participants swam 800m around the iconic burj hotel on 1 February, in support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). a ‘must-do’ on the city’s social calendar, this thrilling and fun event sees the participation of both competitive and noncompetitive swimmers.

arSH’S Call FOr arTiSTS arsh art Gallery’s group Visual art exhibition will see local uaE artists bring their artistic talents to fore. a number of artists have been handpicked by arsh to exhibit their works. The result is an eclectic art display of a variety of subjects presented in an assortment of media. The exhibition runs from 1-15 February at the arsh art Gallery, indigo icon Tower at Jumeirah Lake Towers.

DuBai DESErT rOaD ruN 2013 Take the road to nowhere with the dubai desert Run on 23 February. The 10km senior and 3km junior races follow a fast course within the Seven grounds on traffic-free roads while there’s also a fun run for novice runners. Participants can register online at www.premiermarathons.com. Registration charges range between dhs40 – 80 depending on the race.

COlOrO mulTimEDia SPECTaClE Combining the arts of video animation, movement, theatre and music in perfectly coordinated image projections on to the artists themselves as well as their props, Coloro is a unique multi-media spectacle. Swiss artists Cornelia Clivio, Lorenz Matter and Romano Carrara will let their imaginations run wild at duCTaC on 15 February, creating their own colourful world where reality and fiction are no longer clearly separated. after over 700 performances of their acclaimed Stage TV show and multiple awards - including the German artist of the Year award in 2010 for most innovative show - Coloro are returning to the stage with a brand new show guaranteed to captivate any audience. bold, fearless and breathtaking – it’s a multi-media firework for all the senses!

ViNTaGE all THE WaY if you enjoy classic and collector cars, then head to the Emaar boulevard as vintage vehicles from across the city line up for the 5th Emirates Classic Car Festival (ECCF) from 7 to 9 February. Organised by Emaar Properties in association with the uaE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community development; the automobile & Touring Club of the united arab Emirates (aTCuaE) - the official representative of FiVa; and the ‘Fédération internationale des Véhicules anciens’- the world-wide authority for historic vehicles; the festival is a spectacular show of the finest heritage cars. The highlights of the festival are the colourful car parades; previous editions showcased cars like 1963 Volkswagen beetle, 1969 dodge Charger, 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans am, 1962 Volvo P1800, 1955 Chevrolet 6700-series bus, 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 and many others. The ECCF has also expanded its scope to include classic motorbikes.

Their repertoire ranges from baroque and romantic masterworks all the way to film music and minimalism. bach is combined with avant-garde, the last movement of a Vivaldi Concerto is replaced by a hard-grooving minimal piece from the Netherlands, and Fauré is surrounded by world music. it’s no wonder that these five young musical pioneers have quickly risen from a surprisingly fresh indie chamber music ensemble to one of Switzerland’s most promising classical music exports and rising stars of the international chamber music scene. POOCH ParaDE Plan a fun day out with your pet on 8 February at the dubai Rugby Sevens arena. Now in its 25th year, the show promises an entertaining line-up of events such as a Saluki display, puppy shows, show classes for pedigree and crossbreed dogs, agility competitions, police dog demos and even fun contests such as a fancy dress, dog-most-like-owner, happiest dog and funniest trick competitions. a series of pet health talks will be conducted by veterinary professionals throughout the day while Saluki of arabia Club’s bedouin tent will educate visitors on desert hunting traditions.

EmiraTES airliNE DuBai JaZZ FESTiVal 2013 be a part of the 50,000 plus music lovers crowd as they gather at the Festival Park, dubai Festival City to watch rock legends and jazz, soul, R&b and blues artists perform at the Emirates airline dubai Jazz Festival. The 11th edition of the festival will feature over 22 eclectic performances with headline acts by irish alternative rock band The Script, legendary british rock band deep Purple and american pop rock bands OneRepublic and 3 doors down over nine nights of musical extravagance from 14 to 23 February. DuBai DuTY FrEE TENNiS CHamPiONSHiPS Watch giants of the tennis world battle it out at the dubai duty Free Tennis Championships at the dubai duty Free Tennis Stadium in Garhoud this month. among the top women competing will be Victoria azarenka, Serena Williams, agnieszka Radwanska, angelique Kerber and Sara Errani. added to which the top seeded male players competing for the Championship titles, include Novak djokovic, Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Porto, Tomas berdych, Janko Tipsarevic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The 2013 Championships will follow previous years’ formats with the WTa tournament being run from February 18-23, followed by the aTP tournament from February 25 – March 2. Off court action promises to be as exciting as on court with a multitude of attractions being organised to engage spectators of all ages, each day of the tournament. THE STONE rOSES liVE iN DuBai after a series of sold-out shows across Europe, Manchester music legends the Stone Roses are coming to dubai. The full line-up — ian brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni — play dubai Media City amphitheatre on 21 February. The british alternative rock band, who formed in the late 1980s and came to symbolise one of the most creative moments in independent british music during the 1990s, regrouped just over a year ago, selling 220,000 tickets in 68 minutes when they announced a series of concerts in their home city of Manchester, the fastest-selling rock concerts in uK history. "With a flurry of top artists now visiting the uaE it is fitting to finally present The Stone Roses live in concert and we can’t wait for a packed dubai Media City amphitheatre to rock to songs like She Bangs The Drums and Fools Gold,” said Thomas Ovesen, of organisers done Events.

SKY WalK Looking for a panoramic way to get to dubai Mall? use the newly opened Metro Link that connects the burj Khalifa metro station to the 2nd level of dubai Mall. The 820m air-conditioned glass enclosed walkway is the longest of its kind and almost feels like corridor in the sky. apart from forming a direct convenient link to the mall, the Link also offers many vantage photography points, be it the skyline or the arabian-inspired latticing technique which can be seen in the use of stained glass panels and projecting windows.

liGHTS, WaTEr, FirE Thousands of visitors watched in awe as the majestic burj Lake came alive each evening with the spectacular ‘Water, Fire & Light’ lake show. a multimedia spectacle, it featured live performances, with water, fire and light elements projected on The dubai Fountain, and was beamed on a 210-metre long mega screen and several water platforms with semi-transparent screens. Over 70 artists from around the world came together for its production. The lake show was specially produced for dubai by the same team behind the beijing and London Olympics, and the New Year celebrations in Sydney. Set against the backdrop of the burj Khalifa, the Emirates airlines-sponsored ‘Water, Fire & Light’ show ran from 1 January to 4 February and narrated the story of cultural elements from across the world coming together in dubai in celebration of unity and friendship.

miDDlE EaST ON TraCK Leading rail operators gathered at Middle East Rail 2013, the region’s largest rail exhibition and conference to source solutions, buy equipment and address the challenges in building the Middle East’s rail networks. The exhibition ran from 5 to 7 February at the dubai international Convention and Exhibition Centre and saw a huge volume of corporate-level speakers deliver their experiences with some of the most successful global rail projects.

38TH miDDlE EaST ElECTriCiTY EXHiBiTiON a must-attend event for people involved in sourcing, installing or purchasing products or services for the power, lighting, renewable or nuclear sectors, The Middle East Electricity is the largest platform for industry professionals from over 100 countries worldwide, with more than 1,000 exhibitors expected to participate in this year's event. Now in its 38th year, the event will involve the participation of country managers, area managers, heads and regional heads of various departments. Middle East Electricity runs from 17 to 19 February at the dubai international Convention & Exhibition Centre.

aBu DHaBi TO HOST iDEX 2013 The most strategically important defence exhibition in the world, idEX provides the optimum business environment for international solution providers across land, sea and air sectors to target buyers in the Middle East and North africa (MENa). The event is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, President of the uaE and Supreme Commander of the uaE armed Forces at adNEC, abu dhabi from 17 to 21 February. Exhibiting companies will demonstrate their latest equipment and crafts through daily choreographed displays that will take place on the water and on the purpose-built demonstration track.

BurJumaN EXPaNSiON burJuman, self-proclaimed residence of high fashion, is undergoing a massive expansion costing more than dhs370 million which will see the addition of a new Carrefour hypermarket and a 14-screen Vox Cinemas multiplex to its retail and entertainment offerings. The planned renovation also includes the doubling in size of the current food court and the creation of a link which will connect the new food court to the Pavilion Gardens in the mall’s south wing. One of the mall’s main exterior entrances will also be completely redesigned and an al fresco dining area will be added at the ground level. Once completed, burJuman’s total retail area will increase to 92,900 square metres from the current 74,300 square metres.

ow in its 21st year, The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has become an iconic event with the world’s top players returning year after year to the delight of the sell-out crowds. The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships began life as the Dubai Men’s Open back in 1993, when Karel Novacek won the singles and the pairing of Anders Jarryd/John Fitzgerald the doubles. Since then, the tournament has continued to grow from strength to strength with the roll call of players in both the men’s and women’s tournaments (the latter of which began in 2001) reading like a ‘who’s who’ of tennis stars – Goran Ivanisevic, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin have all taken part.

And the 2013 line up of stars promises to be as strong as in previous years. With an incredible eight of the top ten women and six of the top ten men competing for the Championship titles, the stage is set for two thrilling weeks of action. The 2013 Championships will follow previous years’ formats with the WTA tournament being run from 18 – 23 February, followed by the ATP tournament from 25 February – 2 March. In the women’s tournament crowds can expect a tightly fought contest between top seeds Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber and Sara Errani, while confirmed attendance in the men’s tournament include Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Juan Martin Del Porto, Tomas Berdych, Janko Tipsarevic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The action is centred around the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium (voted by players on the ATP World Tour as ‘best venue’) where the FEbRuaRY 2013

Nestled beside the stadium are The Irish Village, Century Village and of course the newly opened Jumeirah Creekside Hotel – where players will stay, while at the site, fans will have a chance to see their favourite players warming up for the matches. Last year’s 20th anniversary event drew a record crowd of more than 100,000 people and a television audience of millions who saw almost every top player in the world battle it out for the coveted titles. At the end of the first two weeks Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska had taken her first Dubai women’s crown defeating Julia Goerges of Germany and Switzerland’s Roger Federer claimed his fifth Dubai title defeating Britain’s Andy Murray. There will be action aplenty again this year not only on court but off court too. The hugely popular Kids’ Days, Ladies’ Day and Fantastic Fan Day will be held, as will the Catch and Win game which gets every match off to an exciting start. Last year 10 lucky spectators won

The Tennis Village will also be buzzing all fortnight with roving entertainment, music, tennis games, autograph signings, and the big screens showing the action live. There’ll be a host of other events and activities, with plenty of chances to win coveted finals tickets. No wonder the event has amassed a number of accolades in the past decade; last year it collected its eighth title in 10 years as the ATP World Tour 500 Tournament of the Year. t’s officially the second biggest card event in the world (after Christmas) with a staggering one billion Hallmark moments being sent out each year, while in the UK, it’s also the busiest day of year for Samaritan hotlines (after New Year’s Eve), when lonely hearts call for sympathy and comfort. In Dubai, though, you’ll find a sea of red. Nowhere celebrates the universal day of love better than the Emirates. If you want to plan something special it couldn’t be more fortuitous this year as 14 February falls on a Thursday – marking the start of the weekend. Check out your favourite restaurant’s Valentine’s packages – usually a themed menu, with bubbly and chocolates included. Or else, plan a spa break with your partner in one of the many spas where rose petal baths, chocolate scrubs and all manner of aphrodisiacal potions induce a state of relaxation and voluptuousness. Each hotel will have especially ‘suite’ offers which may include chauffeur driven pick-ups, bouquets of roses and other surprises; you can usually bank on these ranging from Dhs300 upwards, with five-star hotels outdoing themselves for the most romantic ideas. If you’re unattached have no fear either – many of the city’s bars and clubs organise special ladies' night events or fun-infused single ‘mingles’ where Cupid’s bow and arrow have been known to strike. While the more cynical might see Valentine’s Day as overly commercial, in Dubai it’s more about embracing the spirit of the day and showing love and appreciation for everyone, including your colleagues, partners, teachers, pets and parents. Remember the Law of Attraction - sharing the love means getting it back too!

Denmark The Danish have added a special spin to writing love poems in a tradition called Gaekkebrev. On Valentine’s Day, young couples write romantic love poems but the sender remains anonymous. Instead, he signs his name only in dots. If the receiver guesses the correct name, she will receive an Easter egg later on in the spring. ith around 450 hotels in the Emirates, there’s no shortage of choice when it comes to choosing where to brunch at the weekend. And while the concept usually involves ‘all you can eat and drink’ the different environments lend themselves to different clients – from family parties, corporate get-togethers, birthday celebrations or more raucous stag and hen dos. Prices can range from Dhs100 to 500 with the dress code ranging from casual to chic, and it’s de rigueur that bubbles flow freely. Alcohol can only be served within the confines of a hotel and brunches have the reputation for lasting up to three hours or more; therefore it’s an afternoon’s commitment rather than a ‘quickie’ lunch. For first time visitors to the Emirates, it’s worth noting that behaviour on leaving brunch destinations should be discreet and respectful – Friday is the Muslim holy day, and any excesses of expatriate behaviour does not often sit well with the local population. To enjoy brunches to the full therefore – select your spot with care. Best ski resort for charm: kitzBuhel, austria As a comeback it's been a slow one – a quarter of a century, to be precise. But Austria is edging closer to overtaking France as the place to ski. Back in the Seventies, when skis were straight and Franz Klammer ruled the downhill courses of the world, most skiers went to Austria. Austria now represents better value for money than the most popular resorts of the French Alps. Moreover, the standard of service is higher and the welcome is warmer, especially in Kitzbuhel. Watching the annual Hahnenkamm, the toughest of all downhills, which is hosted there, takes your breath away. At one point, the course plunges away at an angle of 85 degrees. The Hahnenkamm, though, isn't really what Kitzbühel is about. This former medieval mining town, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Wilder Kaiser mountains, is actually one of the softies of the skiing world. Even the notorious Streif racecourse becomes a Familienabfahrt – a family run – once the World Cup circus has left town. Kitzbuhel is also one of those resorts that appeals to non-skiers as well as skiers. Its pretty, pedestrianised streets are lined with luxury hotels and upmarket boutiques. Wannabe pilots can now take to the cockpit of a Boeing 737 and fly the world from The Dubai Mall. A new flight simulator installed in the mall allows people to enjoy the thrills of a simulated flight. German entrepreneur Wolfram Schleuter, who already has ten simulator centres in Europe, created the programme, which was developed by iPilot. An in-mall 15-minute flight costs Dhs299. For those who feel ill-at-ease about flying there is also an hour-long flying programme designed to help nervous flyers get over their fear. More iPilot simulators are to be opened in Abu Dhabi next year and expansion into the US market is on the flight path. Western Europe’s tallest building, the 310-metre-tall The Shard in London, is poised to open on 1 February. From then on, visitors to the British capital will be able to enjoy spectacular 360-degree views that are said to extend some 60 odd kilometres outwards from the viewing platform on Level 69. It will also be possible to experience outdoor views of London and beyond from the 72nd level, from where visitors can view some of London’s most popular tourist attractions including Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and beyond to Windsor Castle. Dubai’s ongoing ambition to establish itself as the world’s leading aviation hub came closer to fruition with Dubai Airports phased opening the new Concourse A on January 2 this year. With this opening, Dubai Airports also stepped into the books of aviation history as it is the world’s only dedicated and purpose-built Airbus A380 facility. EK003, which departed from at 1430hrs from Dubai to Heathrow, London was the Concourse’s first flight, ushering in Dubai’s new aviation era. Concourse A is designed for the exclusive use of Emirates, the world’s largest operator of the twin-deck jumbo with 31 in service and another 59 on order.

VISION Aviation represents $22 billion (Dh80.91 billion) — or 28 per cent of Dubai’s economy — and is a major driver of the emirate’s economic growth. Built at a cost of $3billion (Dhs11 billion), Concourse A (CA) has turned out to be one of the timeliest investments that the emirate has made and is going to increase Dubai International’s passengerhandling capacity to 75 million from the current 60 million. A critical element of the $7.8 billion Strategic Plan 2020, CA will help Dubai International become the world’s biggest hub for international passengers, beating London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle. Part of the airport's Terminal 3 complex, Concourse A has become the "home of the Emirates A380” from where passengers will connect to more than 20 Emirates A380 destinations around the world, including A380 flights to Europe on Australian airline, Qantas, which will be introduced later year, in terms of the global partnership announced recently. Dubai International initially opened four out of the 20 available gates, with more gates being introduced every few weeks. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: “We are opening CA in stages with more gates coming online in each successive phase. We believe

that this approach of gradual transition will enable us and all our partners to ensure smooth operations and help us to deliver on our customer service commitment.”

CONCOURSE A FOOTPRINT Concourse A (CA) covers a sprawling 528,000 square metres across 11 floors. It features 20 aircraft contact gates, all capable of accommodating the A380, in addition to 13 remote stands. With an annual handling capacity of 19 million passengers per year, CA is a fully airside structure and is connected to the two major public levels of Concourse B and Terminal 3 (T3) via an underground train system, in addition to the vehicular and Baggage Handling System (BHS) utility tunnels. CA is also partially underground comprising the train stations - both arriving and departing. Its lower and upper levels are connected by means of a special vertical transportation system, known as Sky Lifts, which act as a focal point feature in a central atrium. The train is the first of its kind in the Middle East and offers a fast, smooth connection, via two lines, between the new A380 hub and Terminal 3.

dubai airports older terminals undergo renovation in sync with the opening of new Concourses.

RefuRbishment of DXb’s teRminal 1 a major refurbishment of dubai international’s Terminal 1 is due to begin in the first quarter of this year which when complete will offer passengers a vastly improved travelling experience. The refurbishment includes more efficient and streamlined baggage screening in the departures hall, the replacement of all check-in desks, upgrade of baggage systems and the modernisation of all public areas. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The new baggage screening process will greatly improve passenger flow by eliminating a queuing point, thereby reducing the time it takes passengers to move from the forecourt in Terminal 1 to the departure gates. The additional space created by streamlined baggage process will be used to transform the departures hall into a more spacious and welcoming environment and when combined with upgraded wayfinding signage, provide a more easily accessible building for the travelling public. The refurbishment programme also includes the reconfigured and expanded arrivals hall where all ‘meeters and greeters’ will be accommodated within a fully air-conditioned space with new food and retail outlets. The arrivals immigration hall is also being refurbished to improve passenger flow and reduce processing times for arriving passengers. The adjoining arrivals forecourt will be reconfigured to improve traffic flow and create a safer pedestrian environment for all passengers leaving the Terminal 1 arrivals hall. Once the refurbishment of Terminal 1 is complete, it will be linked via a new elevated train system to Concourse d, which is currently under construction. Concourse d will become the new home of the more than 100 airlines that fly to and from dubai international when it opens in 2015. 40

Dubai aiRpoRts seeks biDs foR ConCouRse D aDveRtising ConCession dubai airports is inviting specialist advertising companies to submit expressions of interest to be awarded the official concession for Concourse d, currently under construction at dubai international. Concourse d will become the new home of the 100 international airlines that fly to and from dubai international when it opens in 2015. The new facility, which will house all gates and extensive commercial outlets, will be linked Terminal 1 via a new elevated train. On-airport advertising has become an increasingly important part of dubai airports’ non-aeronautical revenue, as the dubai international’s growing network of destinations and ballooning passenger numbers allow brands to target a wide and cosmopolitan audience.

Dubai Duty Free wins “best Duty Free shops” it’s officially the awards season for the film industry with the Emmy’s and Oscars almost upon us, and you could also say for the duty free business too. and what better way to start the season than at a glittering cocktail reception at The Peninsula beverly Hills in beverly Hills, California, where dubai duty Free was presented with the ‘best duty Free Shops’ award by the publishers of uS-based magazine Global Traveler for the sixth consecutive year. Over the past nine years, Global Traveler’s consistently, unbiased reporting has placed the GT Tested Reader Survey among the most highly regarded in the industry. The awards are the result of an annual reader’s survey, which garnered 28,000 responses, and reviews everything from airlines, to loyalty programmes in a total of 71 categories. This international recognition also follows on from the Frontier award for “best airport Retailer of the Year” won by dubai duty Free for an unprecedented sixth time. The Frontier award was presented in October during the annual Tax Free World association (TFWa) in Cannes. 42

Dubai Duty Free sets new sales recorD 2012 was a remarkable year for dubai duty Free; the operation has just announced a record dhs5.9 billion being achieved (uS$1.6 billion), which marks a 10 per cent increase on 2011. indeed, the year concluded with a new monthly sales record of dhs619 million (uS$169 million) in december. On dubai duty Free’s 29th anniversary day on december 20th a special promotional offer of 25 per cent discount fuelled sales of dhs76.91 million (uS$21 million) in the 24-hour period. The record figures are no doubt as a result of the combined team’s hard work and continuing sales drive. The operation recorded a staggering 23.5 million sales transactions in 2012, which averages out at 64,300 sales transactions per day. Perfumes retained its position as the top selling category with sales reaching dhs907 million (uS$249 million), an increase of 13 per cent and the Perfumes category now contributes 15 per cent towards total sales at dubai duty Free. The second highest category was Liquor which showed an increase of 17 per cent to dhs871 million (uS$239 million), while Gold retained third position with sales of dhs582 million (uS$159 million). Tobacco sales reached dhs476 million (uS$130 million), a 10 per cent increase year-on-year. Confectionery sales jumped to the fifth position and recorded sales of dhs465 million (uS$127 million), representing an 18 per cent increase over last year. Other increases were seen in Electronics, which rose by 13 per cent to dhs460 million (uS$126 million), Watches rose by 11 per cent to dhs396 million (uS$108 million) while Cosmetics sales rose by 14 per cent to dhs373 million (uS$102 million). Sales increases were seen across all dubai duty Free retail areas in all three Terminals. Terminal 1 recorded a seven per cent increase on overall sales, Terminal 2 sales increased by 15 per cent and Terminal 3, increased by 11 per cent. Sales in the arrivals retail areas also increased overall by 13 per cent.

Paul Quinn and aidan Murphy, left ireland on September 1 for a seven month journey that will eventually take them to australia. Starting from dublin City Center, the duo headed to the port of Rosslare and then to Cherbourg, France where a non-stop journey saw the cyclists cross France, italy, Slovenia, Croatia, bosnia, Serbia, bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and iran. From there, it was another ferry ride to reach dubai where they spent Christmas at The irish Village, and where they received a donation from dubai duty Free. They have so far covered 8,472 km out of the targeted 15,000 km and raised an impressive 22,000 euros in the process. after their short break in dubai, they fly to Mumbai, india and continue the journey through india, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore before catching a flight to land in australia.

It took eight months’ preparation, but the result was that Katie formed part of the fastest and first all-female team to successfully row the 4,800+ kilometres (a third of all people who have attempted this feat have failed). Katie has used this experience to challenge others to follow their dreams and overcome obstacles, and is an in–demand motivational speaker. She believes we are all designed to succeed – and encourages everyone to think big. As for herself; she is already preparing her next challenge.

What is the biggest misconception you’ve encountered about Dubai?

Most interesting people I’ve met on my travels…

I started freelancing to give myself some time out from the fast-paced corporate world that I had been in for 10 years. I successfully progressed up the ladder of an international bank and I was on the board of directors for a UAE-based consulting firm and I decided I wanted to devote my energy to a personal project that would involve both a mental and physical challenge. It was perfect timing when I was introduced to Julia Immonen, who founded Sport Against Trafficking and created RowForFreedom (sponsored by Dubai Duty Free in 2011). A 40-60 day row across the Atlantic on a two hour shift system seemed to fit the bill for a physical and mental challenge that I was looking for and it also opened my eyes to the horrific crime of Human Trafficking. The challenge and the cause have given me a new sense of purpose and we work as a community even after the event to use the power of sport to raise awareness and funds for our chosen charities.

What have been some of your most rewarding achievements either personally or professionally? Successfully rowing across the Atlantic Ocean and gaining two world records. Battling 15 metres waves, dealing with sleep deprivation, sea sickness, no showers and a bucket to share as a toilet was certainly an 74

How many languages do you speak? My mother tongue is English, and I learnt basic French and a very poor amount of German from school. I've picked up some Arabic in the last seven years of being in the UAE. I think by stepping out of your comfort zone and being thrown in at the deep end we often very quickly learn to swim. I've found that when we have to we can be very resourceful.

That it’s all glitz and glam. Yes, it is but there are also fabulous little local gems that give you a nice grounded feel to the place - like fresh fish restaurants hidden in a Portakabin just set back off the beach.

Where are you going on holiday to this year? I will be going to Portugal to visit my parents

and maybe Africa with work and I'm looking at planning another expedition which will be very exciting and give me my fix of extreme conditions and isolation!

Are you a big collector of holiday souvenirs? I love materials and fabrics. So much creative fun can be had with them in the home and making garments.

How do you overcome jet lag? By getting straight back into a routine of lots of water, a good night’s sleep and back to exercise.

Do you travel light? Yes. Getting across the Atlantic with only a pair of shorts and t-shirt teaches you that you don't need a great deal in life!

The four other women I rowed the ocean with. They are all incredible and our relationships are special.

How do you relax? In the gym, running around the marina or going to Yas island with my family. We also have a small place in Ras Al Khaimah which is a great escape. dv
