Davidoff 2013 "Year of the Snake” Edition 2013 is represented in the Chinese calendar by the sign of the snake. To mark the occasion, Davidoff has created the new "Year of the Snake" edition of cigars with three fine limited-edition accessories. Basel, December 2012. At the start of the Chinese Year of the Snake (February 10, 2013), Davidoff is launching the new 2013 "Year of the Snake” Edition, with four exclusive limited-edition accessories. In the Chinese calendar, the sixth of the twelve Chinese signs of the zodiac is characterised as wise and graceful. The Snake is the quintessential symbol for intelligence and profundity. Particularly delicate and fine when depicted in a figure of eight, it has become one of the most popular decorations in all of Asia, not only for its unique symmetry but also because it carries the promise of infinity, material prosperity and luck. It is said that Snake-people like to possess the finer things in life. Premium cigar brand Davidoff is also synonymous with luxury and the total "crop to shop" concept. "Year of the Snake" is, therefore, not only the unusual name given to the new limited edition, but also the connection of quintessential wisdom and stylish quality awareness with Davidoff. Integrating these characteristics into an aroma represents a challenge for the Davidoff Master Blender: namely, to combine particularly old tobaccos to successfully create three layers of flavour - from floral nuances reminiscent of honey, to caramel, and finally to peppery notes of wood or nut, whilst also providing a captivating quality.... highly aromatic, with light-medium strength and Cuban thickness, the cigar develops a charming creaminess due to the Ecuadorian binder. The impressive Churchill format makes for a long smoking experience punctuated with the delicacy and refinement of a cigar with charisma. The octagonal, red-lacquered wooden box containing eight cigars will provide pleasure in the coming year. The cultural background of this 2013 "Year of the Snake” Edition is every bit as fascinating as its aesthetic appearance: The "White Snake Story", the Chinese love story still extremely popular today, can trace its origins back to a legend from the Ming dynasty (1368 AD) and, amongst other things, has inspired Davidoff’s new cigar - a cigar that preserves its cultural heritage whilst using passion and attention to detail to unlock the spirit of a dynamic, global environment . Those who fall in love with this cigar have no sense of superficiality. The fine, profound 2013 "Year of the Snake” Edition is for aficionados who smoke intelligently. The uniqueness of this luxurious edition with a double ring speaks for itself. It is limited to 4,500 pieces and is available at Dubai Duty Free as of January 2013.

POSITIvE BEGINNINGS…. The UAE ushers in the New Year having been recognised as being one of tomorrow’s leading country brands. The UAE was awarded first position in FutureBrand’s inaugural list of the top 15 countries with the biggest potential. In a statement FutureBrand said: “The Future Fifteen recognises the UAE as the forerunner among tomorrow’s leading country brands.” Chile, Malaysia and Qatar were the three other countries expected to have the greatest economic, political and cultural impact on the global landscape in years to come. FutureBrand cited the UAE’s ability to capitalise on its abundant natural resources and to exercise excellent government foresight around policy investment, as key indicators of future success. Meanwhile the UAE ranked 23rd in FutureBrand’s 2012-13 index, which ranks the world’s leading country brands. Switzerland took first position, followed by Canada, Japan, Sweden and New Zealand. Over 3,600 opinion-makers and frequent international travellers from 18 countries participated in the survey, which determines how main audiences – residents, investors, tourists and foreign governments – view the world’s top country brands, from awareness to advocacy. Major UAE companies collected further accolades and institutions at the World Travel Awards – hailed as the ‘Travel Oscars’ – which were held in New Delhi recently. Dubai’s Burj Al Arab was recognised as the ‘World’s Leading Hotel’; Atlantis The Palm, Dubai as the ‘World’s Leading Landmark Hotel’; Grosvenor House Dubai took the accolade of the ‘World’s Leading Business Hotel and Apartments’; and Dnata that of the ‘World’s Leading Air Travel Service Provider’. These new awards come at a time when the UAE’s campaign to host the World Expo 2020 is generating increasing awareness and momentum, and needs to increase its international visibility and viability on the road to winning the bid. ubai’s campaign to host the World Expo 2020 is gaining momentum. Competing against San Paulo (Brazil), Ayutthaya (Thailand), Ekaterinburg (Russia) and Izmir (Turkey), the UAE’s bid to host the prestigious 2020 World Expo is now well underway. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of the Emirates Group, and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Hosting the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, said: “We are extraordinarily pleased that five of the leading companies in the UAE have joined this important national effort, underlining our country’s commitment to the bid. “With their active support, the UAE is now even more strongly positioned to be selected as the host nation for this celebration of new ideas and global partnerships, which will provide enduring benefits for future generations – here at home and across the world.” H.E. Reem Al Hashemi, UAE Minister of State and the Bid Committees Managing Director, has been assigned with driving this ambitious initiative, themed ‘Connecting Minds, Connecting the Future’. With the full support of the government and its Premier bid Partners – including Dubai Airports, DP World, Emirates Airline, Emirates NBD, Etisalat and the Jumeirah Group – Al Hashemi is now calling for the UAE business community to support the initiative. The Lead Partners – including the Dubai Department for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) – will work with the Dubai UAE Expo 2020 team to raise awareness about the UAE’s bid to host the world’s most coveted cultural event. The Lead Partner network is to be expanded to include additional firms and organisations that share a commitment to achieving the nation’s strategic goal. Over 100 private companies have already pledged their support to the initiative, which would be extremely lucrative for the local economy.

An estimated 1.5 million exhibitors visit the UAE annually, participating in some 300 events, including 100+ major exhibitions and conferences, from World Economic Forum summits to the Formula 1 Grand Prix. “We have proved time and time again our ability to host large scale international events and now we are ready to host this one,” concluded Al Hashemi. The UAE is now the 30th largest trading economy in the world with a total trade surplus of US$94million in 2011. As the leading trading economy in the Middle East the country is a hub for international trade and commerce benefiting from and excellent infrastructure and a young and dynamic workforce. Dubai’s vision for 2020 is also gaining international support, with highly influential figures including Bill Gates endorsing Dubai’s bid. Gates, one of the wealthiest men in the world and founder of Microsoft, hails from Seattle, a city that hosted the 1962 World Expo – an event which brought significant prosperity and a heightened international profile. The 438-hectare site for the 2020 Expo has already been earmarked and will create a seamless link between the new Dubai World Central Airport and Jebel Ali port. This is the area that will also be home to the new Dubai Convention Centre. ‘The social, cultural and business environment that we enjoy in the UAE indicates that we are by very nature a world expo- for here we have so many different nationalities, working living together from all parts of the world,” noted Al Hashemi. Dubai’s bid to host the six-month long 2020 World Expo will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the UAE Federation. The UAE is a regular participant at World Expos; the UAE Pavilion from the 2010 event in Shanghai, China has been transported to Abu Dhabi’s Saddiyat Island, where it is used for major events, most recently as part of Art Abu Dhabi 2012.

Some of the new launches include: Luxury Italian fashion brand Ermanno Scervino, who attended the recent VIP launch hosted by Mohi-Din Binhendi. Asked about what he thought of the regional market, Ermanno replied, “Dubai is the showcase of a dynamic market which reserves great attention for the excellence and luxury of Made in Italy.” Matthew Williamson has also been in Dubai to launch his footwear collection for SS13, which was the fulfillment of a personal ambition. “I wanted to create shoes which truly reflect my brand’s DNA. Like the clothes, my shoes will focus on femininity, great colour combinations, attention to detail with a jet set sensibility.” Williamson has enlisted the help of young British shoe designer Joanne Stoker to design the line. Joanne, who has her own namesake shoe line, developed the collection with one of Italy’s premium shoe manufacturers, ensuring the product maintains high levels of craftsmanship and quality. Sergio Rossi’s new store is both a playful tribute to femininity and an alluring homage to the world’s screen icons. The store was also inspired by the high heeled shoe’s curvaceous silhouette, celebrating womanly beauty and power with a combination of dramatic furnishings and domestic comfort. In collaboration with Sergio Rossi’s Creative Director, Francesco Russo, the Londonbased design company, Studioilse, helped bring to life the core values of the Sergio Rossi brand. Ten things to do in
Adelaide
it’s called the 20 minute city – as everything in the the capital of South australia, formerly known as the City of Churches, is within easy reach. Situated on the shores of Gulf St Vincent, with its laid back yet sophisticated vibe, it makes for an ideal holiday destination for families and solo travellers alike. words: penny MccorMick
1 ExplorE Handorf
Adelaide’s open-minded multi-culturalism dates back to the 1840s when European minorities fled Old World prejudices and colonised South Australia in the company of affluent free settlers. Handorf is one of them, being the oldest German settlement in Australia, and the village is located in the Adelaide Hills. It’s been kept very much as it was since 1838 and on guided tours visitors will learn much of the history of the area and its settlers. Unlike other Australian states, Adelaide’s population was not taken from convicts originally sent to Australia by Britain, but comprised free settlers. Whilst most immigrants in the 1880s came from the UK, others arrived from diverse places such as Germany, China, Afghanistan, Italy, Lebanon and Scandinavia. All have left their mark on the city. At Handorf you can also sample German delicacies at the many cafes and restaurants. 26

The first ships landed at Glenelg beach, which is now a bustling seaside resort. History tells us that in 1802, after a chance meeting with the French navigator Nicolas Baudin off the coast of South Australia, the early British explorer Matthew Flinders mapped the entire South Australia coastline in his ship, The Investigator. That coastline is untarnished – think white, sandy beaches as far as the eye can see. These beaches offer sailing, boating, scuba diving and beautiful sunsets.

Despite offering a refund should anyone fail to see a dolphin, the 57ft catamaran known as The Temptation has yet to disappoint. On the tour you can swim with the dolphins if you wish and if you can’t swim you'll be provided with a special floatation wetsuit. A visit to Port Adelaide is an alternative spot for dolphin watching. The suburb is 20 minutes from Adelaide and in a stunning location. For the more adventurous The Adelaide Dive Centre will organise cage dives with the Great White Sharks or a swim with the Leafy Sea Dragons. More than 40,000 years ago, the Kaurna Aboriginal people settled the Adelaide Plains, calling it Tandanya; the place of the Red Kangaroo. A visit to Kangaroo Island, or KI as the locals call it, will reveal kangaroos at dawn and a whole lot more. A pristine wilderness with un-crowded beaches and geological wonders, it’s one of Australia’s great scenic treasures, and its third largest island, located 110km south of Adelaide. It can be accessed by ferry or plane and has a fascinating history dating back to 1804 when it was claimed by the French. While it has been mined for salt, commercial fishing and eucalyptus, as a tourist destination it is second to none. The flora and fauna alone will make for memorable photographs; penguins, wallabies, koalas, New Zealand fur seals and Australian sea lions are just some of the island’s inhabitants! This month dv is getting dazzled by the crystal exhibits at the Maison Baccarat, enjoying centuries of Islamic art at the new galleries in the Louvre and indulging in some traditional British heritage… words Catherine belbin A new must-visit site on the Paris tourist map is that of the new Islamic Art Galleries housed inside the Louvre Museum which houses one of the world’s richest collections of Islamic art. The historic collection, displayed in harmony with modern technology and techniques, includes a rare 14th century metal basin, Ottoman jade bowls, an 11th century Egyptian rock crystal ewer and 17th century ceramic tiles, as well as the first example of Mamluk architecture displayed in a museum… The galleries, spread over some 30,000 square feet on the ground and lower floors of the Louvre, are dedicated to Islamic art over some 1,200 years from the 7th to 19th centuries. The dynamic new space is said to be four times larger than that previously devoted to Islamic art at the Louvre. The priceless collection also includes textiles, carpets, manuscripts, books, metal and glasswork, and ceramics. The cleverly engineered space’s billowing golden roof resembles a flying scarf or Italian Mario Bellini and Frenchman Rudy Ricciotti designed rug. Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal donated US$20 million towards the construction cost of US$125 million. The oil company Total and the governments of France, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Muscat, Kuwait and Azerbaijan also helped finance the prestigious project. The roof of the space was made from approximately 9000 webbed steel tubes covered with glass and topped with an anodised gold surface, which weighs some 150 tonnes and is an architectural masterpiece in itself. The new Islamic Art Galleries are the first major architectural addition to the Louvre since 1989 – when I.M. Pei’s controversial glass Pyramid was installed. Haute Couture gowns meet limited edition crystal art at the Maison Baccarat in the centre of Paris as part of the just opened Taille Sur Mesure / The Art of the Cutter exhibition. Meanwhile, the 250-year-old manufacturer of some of the world’s finest cut crystal is showing some of its most precious pieces. Over 300 handcrafted items featuring different cutting techniques are on display, made by some of the leading glasscutters and blowers in the world. Curated by Michael Lerch and Sandrine Fritz, the exhibition aims to show how the modern designs of Baccarat from top architects such as Ettore Sottsass, Marcel Wanders and Patricia Urquiola incorporate traditional iconic Baccarat designs from their heritage collections. The similarities between designing and making haute couture gowns and high-class unique glass objects d’art are also highlighted. From the first electrified chandelier created from the Russian Tsar Nicholas in 1898 to the most recent Chateau glasses the unique Baccarat style and DNA is crystal clear! The exhibition will continue until 30 March 2013. Dubbed ‘a traditional inn – reinvented for stylish travellers’, The Crown Inn at the end of the Metropolitan metro line in the UK is perfect for those looking to head off the beaten track this winter. This timber-framed 16th century former coach inn with 19th century additions has undergone a contemporary refurbishment. With its labyrinth of low-beamed rooms The Crown is completely chintz-free and provides modern and stylish accommodation. With just 37 rooms this boutique hotel encapsulates the best of olden-day England without being frumpy or boring. The Queen Elizabeth I suite, with traditional four-poster bed that featured in Hugh Grant’s Four Weddings and a Funeral, was the only room that did not get the chintz-free treatment. Located in Amersham High Street, it sits at the heart of a true British cobbled-street town, complete with centuries-old churches, houses, antique shops and restaurants. www.the crownamersham.com dv

Travelling Light Slimming down your suitcase is an art many of us master through trial and error. That’s why it’s best to follow some expert advice to save time and help with the final edit before check in. Words: Penny MccorMick

wo of the most celebrated authors of the last century can teach us a thing or two about packing. It was Antoine de St Exupery who declared, “He who would travel happily must travel light,” while Alexander Solzhenitsyn said, “Let your memory be your travel bag.” While these philosophical musings are all very well and good, each journey requires some form of packing. The best starting point is the actual suitcase. Choosing best one that's fit for purpose gives you a head start, whether it’s a carry on hold all, a suitor or multitasking wheelie. The trend for lightweight luggage in ballistic nylon as opposed to hard cases and trunks may well have to do with the frequency of today’s business trips and reduced baggage allowances in low cost airlines, but it also means that a lack of structure can make the eventual suitcase contents appear disorganised. A good way to combat this is to be prepared. Do your homework by checking what temperature and facilities the destination has before travelling. For instance, there’s no point bringing hairdryers and irons if they’re already provided. Likewise the ‘just in case’ mantra is a recipe for disaster; packing for all eventualities after all, does not leave room for spontaneity! A rule of thumb is to lay everything out before you travel and do a final cull before the pack. Downsizing toiletries, wearing the heaviest shoes or coats on departure, and being savvy about colour coding your wardrobe (around neutral basics) also helps. The end result will be a lean, mean, travelling machine which gives you a sense of comfort and confidence. Oh, and the space to pack an extra foldable bag for retail therapy indulgences!

How can you make sure that you maximise your packing space so you don’t have to edit things out? Try to pack with classification in order to be really prepared: tee-shirt with tee-shirt, socks with socks, shoes with shoes. Being organised is the key to smooth travelling, so travel with a list which should include: where I am going; when; and what is best to take with me.
What are some of the rules for packing a suitcase? • Roll socks and underwear and use to stuff shoes so they keep the shape of the shoe, and take up less room in the packing case • Lay shoes and other bulky items like electronic chargers, belts and travel alarm clock on the bottom • Lay pants/trousers, flat items next, with a few folds as possible, to minimise wrinkles • Next lay down shirts folded flat; try to fold the shirt as close as possible to the dimension of the suitcase • Roll knit shirts and use to stuff around the edges once the bag is filled • Use a suitor section to help minimize wrinkles. If you do not have a suitor, fold the suit jacket inside out by punching out the shoulders to keep their rounded shape, and lay on top as the last item packed • Keep shirts or dresses on wire hangers and in the plastic dry cleaning sleeves, as the plastic reduces wrinkles

What should you always remember to pack on a holiday? Whether packing for business or pleasure, a few important items to have on your packing list are: a blazer, lightweight sweaters in neutral colours as they are great for layering, a white button down, a pair of dress shoes and a pair of loafers. A mobile power pack should be tucked inside to ensure you’re connected throughout your trip. Don’t forget to add in your essential toiletry kit!

Handling Services at Dubai International helps make your vacation or business trip the best ever by simply ensuring that your bags reach their destination correctly. Considering that the airport handles more than 120,000 bags for more than 450 flights each day, this is a mammoth task. Once you check in your luggage, your bags travel over a portion of conveying systems that are over 100 kilometres long to reach the hold of your aircraft. More than 2,000 baggage handling staff, across all three terminals, work diligently to ensure that this process happens smoothly and within the minimum connecting time.
D I S C O V E R I N G DX B
BAGGAGe HAndlInG SySTem Dubai International boasts one of the most technologically advanced and secure baggage handling systems globally. With conveyor lines totalling 130-km in length, the new baggage handling system at Dubai International is one of the largest and also one of the deepest installed underground baggage handling systems in the world. In order to provide sufficient manoeuvring space for aircraft operations, the entire system is located beneath the taxiway area. A high-speed tray conveyor system transports items of luggage in individual trays permitting better control during transfers, quicker passenger check-in and 100 per cent accurate baggage tracking. The baggage handling system at Dubai International achieves a maximum speed of 27 km per hour and can handle up to 15,000 bags per hour. The use of automated tag readers permits the baggage operators to track any bag at any point in the130km baggage ‘factory’. The Baggage Handling System is also equipped to efficiently handle luggage even under difficult weather conditions. In case of flights being delayed due to extreme weather conditions or other technical reasons, baggage can still be forwarded quickly and reliably to connecting flights and baggage claim areas - even during the consequential peak times thanks to the flexibility of the baggage handling system. Dubai Airports knows that luggage handling can make or break a passenger’s travel experience. That’s why apart from installing the best in technology, Dubai Airports also has a host of initiatives in place to ensure that passengers travel with complete ease of mind when it comes to their luggage. All three terminals of Dubai International offer a comprehensive range of baggage services. The concierge services lets passengers take advantage of dedicated porters who can help with their bags when checking in, or with retrieving luggage from the carousel and taking it to their car, bus or taxi on arrival. The porters can be found at the entrance to the terminal departures and after the passport control at arrivals. The porter service costs AED 20 per trolley.
PlASTIC WRAP And leFT lUGGAGe FACIlITy Passengers can get extra protection for their bags by opting for the baggage wrapping services available at departures. For a nominal sum of AED20, your luggage will be wrapped in strong transparent plastic, helping to keep the bags in pristine condition through transit. Travellers who have had to check out of their hotel but have time before their flight, or those on a short stopover can opt for the convenient luggage storage facility which lets you deposit your bags in the safe custody of the airport. This service, known as the Left Luggage facility, is of particular convenience for transit passengers – they can choose to leave their heavier bags within the airport giving them freedom to explore the city without being weighed down. At Terminal 3, the left luggage facility is located at arrivals near the baby changing room and can be used by both arriving and departing passengers. At Terminal 1, the left luggage facility is located near the taxi area in arrivals. Currently, Terminal 2 does not have a left luggage facility. Emirates airline also offers its passengers the luxury of having their bags delivered to their doorstep for an additional charge. jaNuaRY 2013

Transporting liquids in Hand Baggage
OVeRSIZed BAGGAGe Oversized baggage is any luggage that does not fit within the maximum allowable dimensions set by IATA and Dubai Airports. These could range from sports equipment and baby carts to wheelchairs. All three terminals have dedicated counters and special conveying systems for oversized luggage. Terminal 3 even has a counter for ‘super’ oversized bags.
THe PASSenGeR’S ROle While the airport leaves no stone unturned to ensure the safety of your bags, passengers also have a role to play to ensure their travel experience is smooth. Simple things such as adhering to the weight limit, shape and size specified by the airport and airline can go a long way in avoiding inconvenience. Depending on the route you are flying, baggage allowance is calculated by either the weight or piece concept. Most airlines will specify the maximum allowed weight on the ticket and even their website. However, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority prohibits the acceptance of any one piece of baggage weighing more than 32kg (71lb), into, out of or via Dubai International Airport. Further details on baggage allowances are available online on Dubai International's website www.dubaiairport.com. or the website of your carrier. Baggage handling is one of the most sensitive and critical areas of airport operations. It also dictates the levels of customer satisfaction with the airport. Dubai International is one of the busiest airports in the world and an important contributor to its success is the efficient manner in which baggage is handled. Be it your custom made golf clubs, Stradivarius guitar or even your beloved pooch – Dubai International ensures that your belongings reach you without delay.
Liquid restrictions on hand baggage now apply to all customers boarding from or transiting through Dubai International as well as many other airports around the world. • All liquids, gels and aerosols, pastes, lotions, creams, drinks and other items of similar consistency must be in containers with a capacity no greater than 100ml. Those carried in containers larger than 100ml will not be accepted, even if the container is only partially filled. • These containers must be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a maximum capacity not exceeding one litre. Larger bags or bags that are non-sealable, such as fold-over sandwich bags, are not allowed. • The containers must fit comfortably within the plastic bag, which is to be completely closed. • The plastic bag has to be presented for visual examination at the security screening point. Only one bag per customer will be permitted. • Exemptions will be made for medications, baby milk or foods, and special dietary requirements, but you will need to show an appropriate means of verifying the nature of these items.
In the unlikely event of checked-in luggage being damaged, delayed or misplaced at Dubai International, travellers should contact the dnata Baggage Services 24-hour desk. At all three terminals, this is located in the customs hall, near the baggage claim area. For any personal belongings or luggage items (that have not been checked-in) misplaced at the Dubai International, travellers can contact Dubai Airports Lost & Found office. Each terminal has an office which is controlled and staffed by Dubai Police personnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Emirates Lost and Found department can be contacted by phone on +971 4 505 7584 / 7538. They handle all lost property on all Emirates flights globally, as well as at Terminal 3. They are open during normal UAE business hours. Emirates lost and found department can also be contacted via email at police_lostfound@emirates.com.

Happy anniversary! Having recently celebrated its 29th anniversary, dv catches up with Colm McLoughlin as he reflects on dubai duty Free’s impressive achievements, sponsorship campaigns and charity initiatives as well as their ambitious future plans for 2013 and beyond.
Dubai Duty Free officials headed by Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and George Horan, President along with staff members at Dubai Duty Free’s 29th Anniversary cake cutting held on 20th December at Terminal 3 – Concourse B.
The 29th anniversary celebrated on december 20th 2012 was an impressive milestone for dubai duty Free. Since its formation in december 1983, ddF has grown into a robust and globally competitive enterprise, achieving one of the largest volumes of sales among airport retailers, high levels of customer satisfaction and sales per square meter of retail space twice that of the global average. as such dubai duty Free has much to celebrate. Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of dubai duty Free, musing on the success of ddF across three decades is equally impressed. “Terminal 2 opened in 1998 and dubai duty Free opened a retail operation there. Major changes came in april 2000 with the opening of Sheikh Rashid Terminal. This provided the airport and ourselves with much needed scope to grow. Our retail operation, now called Concourse C, covered 5,400 square metres and enabled us to increase our product range and to showcase new and stylish retail design features. all of this was reflected in our sales, which in 2000 reached uS$222 million.” “in October 2008, the next major development came with the opening of Terminal 3, dedicated to Emirates airline. dubai duty Free now operates a total of 18,000 square metres retail space at dubai international airport and our sales in 2012 will reach close to uS$1.6 billion.” “Overall our sales have doubled six times since the beginning of our business and we expect to reach uS$3 billion in the next five years.” it’s no wonder therefore that ddF are held up as a model for successful businesses world wide (as seen in the recent Global Competitive Summit and the best Practice Report) and why also their anniversary in december was such cause for celebration. Says McLoughlin, “We started celebrating our anniversary in earnest back in 2003 when we marked 20 years and on that day we offered a 20% discount on a wide range of products. That tradition has continued and we now 42
dubai VOYaGER
settled on a 25% discount offer. The result has been extraordinary and we know that people fly specifically on that day so that they can avail of the offer. Given that the anniversary coincides with the holiday season also ensures that people are ready to shop and to buy gifts. There is usually a highly festive atmosphere in dubai duty Free on the anniversary day, our customers are happy and our staff are caught up in the fun. We have a series of activities on the shop floor on that day, our customers are part of the celebrations and we usually conduct a draw for a couple of cars in the Finest Surprise promotion and have a Millennium Millionaire draw. We also have a draw for our staff.” This year’s anniversary was certainly celebrated in style, with sales reaching uS$21 million. Musing on the celebrations, McLoughlin recalls his favourite memories of the event, “it revolves around the first year that we marked our anniversary in this way, which was in 2003. That year we celebrated 20 years by offering a 20% discount and had also made a decision that we would donate the entire day’s sales to charity, which we did. We had sales of uS$1.9 million. The reason why this remains in my memory is that, although we did not realize it at the time, this was the start of the dubai duty Free Foundation, which we went on to establish in 2004 under the auspices of H.H. Sheikh ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, President of dubai Civil aviation authority and Chairman of dubai duty Free. Since then, the Foundation has done some great work and has helped changed the lives of many children and their families.” Moving forward to new targets though, there is no sense of complacency in the ranks of ddF as they are keen to retain their top spot in airport retail business world-wide. “in the immediate future,” says McLoughlin, “one of the major developments is the opening of Concourse a in the first quarter of 2013 which is hugely significant to the airport and all of the stakeholders. dedicated to Emirates a380 fleet, the new Concourse will provide the

retail operation with an additional 8,000 square metres of retail space, bringing dubai duty Free’s footprint to over 26,000 square metres across all Terminals. From a retail point of view, the new Concourse will be fantastic and enables us to expand current product lines and to introduce some new brands, which will be in the line with our passenger mix. From a staffing point of view, our operation will grow to over 5,200 by the beginning of 2013. “Our long term plans are linked to the expansion plans at dubai international airport and at al Maktoum international airport. The capacity of dubai international will reach 95 million with the opening of a fourth concourse and by that time our sales are expected to reach around uS$3 billion.” 2012 was also a year that saw dubai duty Free develop a border shop at Hatta and a partnership with the recently opened jumeirah Creekside Hotel. both of these initiatives may well lead to further diversification. “The jumeirah Creekside Hotel is the first hotel owned by dubai duty Free and sits very well within our Leisure divison which includes The irish Village, the Century Village and the dubai Tennis Stadium,”
explains McLoughlin. “The 292 bedroom hotel is absolutely stunning, very unique with unusual characteristics, such as housing the largest collection of original Middle Eastern art in a public setting. The hotel is managed by jumeirah group who has done a great job in establishing the jumeirah brand and in delivering excellent customer service and a unique experience. This philosophy is in line with dubai duty Free brand philosophy and we are pleased with that fit. Our new shop at the Hatta-Oman border, is our first foray into border shops and it is doing well. We are hoping to expand the retail offer in line with the plans for new offices are finalized in the coming year.” Sponsorship, of course, has been an integral part of dubai duty Free’s marketing strategy since 1983, and it has proved to be a highly successful platform to promote dubai as a world-class sporting, leisure and business facilities. as well as the dubai duty Free Tennis Championships which attracts a massive global audience, generating over uS$350 million worth of television exposure, they also sponsor more than two dozen sporting, cultural and conference events in dubai and overseas and actively support sponsorships to involve the wider community. For example, they supported the first World Parachuting Championship Mondial 2012. as their motto states, dubai duty Free’s future plans are ‘Full of Surprises’.
Dubai Duty Free anniversary sales reach us$21 million dubai duty Free’s 29th anniversary on december 20th has recorded daily sales of dhs76.91 million (uS$21 million) in the 24-hour period. a special 25% discount offer to mark the operation’s 29th anniversary resulted in a spending spree at dubai international airport that began at midnight on 19th december and continued throughout the day until midnight on the 20th. Commenting on the anniversary day sales, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of dubai duty Free said: “We are very happy to have achieved dhs76.91 million (uS$21 million) in a 24-hour period. i would like thank everyone for helping us achieve such sales, in particular thanks to our customers for supporting our anniversary day and our staff who do a great job.” The statistics for the day highlight the huge volume of sales that passed through the cash points. Donna Benton – Chief Executive Officer, The Entertainer. words Penny MccorMick
A
ustralian-born Donna Benton is testament to what a good idea and initiative combined with energy and business acumen can do. For with only US$3,000 to invest in the idea of providing Dubai consumers with dining and local attraction incentives, Donna launched The Entertainer in 2001. As word of mouth and book sales grew so did outreach of The Entertainer guides. Abraaj Capital – the largest SME investment platform for emerging markets – invested a 50% stake in the company in 2012, which has undoubtedly helped the company grow from a Dubai book to an international brand. In 2013 the Entertainer Books will bring together incentive vouchers from over 4,000 merchants distributing their offers across 21 books in 14 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. Donna is an inspiring success story and example for all New Year resolutions!
How much time do you spend travelling in a typical year? The Entertainer is on a rapid global growth plan, so I spend approximately a third of my time travelling for business. This year we expanded into Cape Town, Singapore and Egypt from our original markets in the Middle East, and next year we will expand into Hong Kong, Malaysia, Turkey, Jordan, and the UK.
How many languages do you speak and what’s the best method of learning languages in your opinion? I speak English primarily with a little bit of Arabic and Hindi picked up after living here in Dubai for the past 12 years. Unfortunately I am so busy with my business and family that I don’t normally have enough time to study and learn new languages in depth. 74
dubai VOYaGER
However, I do find in business that it is always received well if you master a few greetings or sayings in whatever market you’re operating in.
What have your world travels taught you?
Tievoli, which my husband and I recently bought and furnished, on the beach in Phuket. We also went to the Maldives with our daughter as it’s one of our favourite holiday destinations.
That regardless of the country, nationality, or language, we all have more in common with each other than there are differences. Everyone is interested in creating a life for themselves and their families that is as worry-free and comfortable as possible. Also, that everyone loves value for money and good customer service.
Are you a big collector of holiday souvenirs and if so, what do you usually bring back home from a new destination?
How do you explore a new city?
