The future is now. A wave of positivity is sweeping Dubai and the UAE. The successful conclusion of the World Expo 2020 bid, resulting in Dubai becoming the first in the Middle East and North Africa region to host this prestigious event in its 150-year history, has been one of the proudest moments the city has experienced, and coincided perfectly with the joyous celebrations of the UAE’s 42nd National Day. The excitement here is palpable and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon: even His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, wanted to mark this historical event with something out of the ordinary, and climbed to the very top of the Burj Khalifa to wave a UAE flag from the world’s tallest building, standing more than 829 metres above the ground. In the meantime, Dubai Duty Free had even more reasons to celebrate, toasting with staff and travellers alike 30 years of excellence, award-winning entrepreneurship and unbeatable customer service. A new year has started, and the Chinese zodiac is telling us that we are now ruled by the horse: this sign is said to be characterised by relentless efforts of self-improvement, energy, kindness, intelligence, talent and a passion for travelling: it could hardly be a better time to start our journey towards 2020. The upbeat vibe running across Dubai and the UAE is also infecting the property market: more and more landmark projects are getting the green light; the hospitality sector is preparing to welcome approximately 20 million visitors per year by 2020; and the arts and culture field is witnessing exciting developments, with a new Dubai Opera House in the works and the Louvre Abu Dhabi scheduled to open its doors later this year. Exciting times are ahead, and Dubai is basking in increasing global attention, attracting more and more tourists, investors and businesses, all coming to see why more than two million people from over 200 different nationalities have chosen to live here. Shahad, a nineyear-old Syrian girl living in dubai, needed funds for medical care to treat a large tumour in her brain. So, eight volunteers from the dubai-based ‘Climb for Cancer’ sprang into action to raise awareness and funds by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on 28 November. The non-profit initiative encourages hikers and adventure enthusiasts to climb mountain peaks around the world to aid children with cancer. Omega Dubai Desert Classic 2014 it’s a meeting of the minds. This annual PGa European Tour-sanctioned event, featuring a uS$2.5 million prize pool, attracts some of the biggest names in golf. Tiger Woods has competed in the event six times since 2001, winning twice, and Ernie Els has played over 12 different years, winning three times. The youngest player to walk away with the trophy was Northern ireland golfer Rory Mcilroy, who was just 19 years old when he won in 2009. Olympic medallists and the uaE’s brightest show jumping stars compete for a prize fund during this annual event, celebrating the art of the jump at the Emirates Equestrian Centre. Star-studded festival The latest edition of the Dubai International Film Festival closed with great audience numbers, a glamorous line-up and US$1 million raised for charity.

scar-winning actress Cate Blanchett and Hollywood legend, actor Martin Sheen, who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award on the opening night, formed just part of the long list of stars who attended the tenth edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), which has brought once again to Dubai the best of international and regional cinema. The star-studded line up also included Oscar nominees Indian director Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth, Bandit Queen) and actress Abigail Breslin, who became the fourth-youngest supporting actress nominee ever for her role in Little Miss Sunshine. Also present were Mark Ruffalo, Naomie Harris, Rooney Mara, Michael B. Jordan – best-known for portraying Wallace in the awardwinning HBO series The Wire and who has earned critical acclaim for his role in Fruitvale Station – and Michael Pena, star of American Hustle. Bollywood stars included actors Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. Actors Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqi presented their critically acclaimed film The Lunchbox, whilst actor Javed Jaffrey presented documentary Champ of the Camp. Egyptian actress and singer Yousra, actress and radio-television personality Nelly, and actor Hassan Youssef were also in attendance. Other Arab celebrities spotted at the Festival included actors Ezzat Al Alaily, Ahmad Bider, Samy Al Adl Mahmoud Kabil, Monther Rayahneh and Abdul Rahman Abou Zahra, actresses Mimi Gama, Meltem Cumbu and Sherine Adel, and performer Nadia El Gendy. The festival saw the screening of many movies tipped for this year's Oscar gong, with a showcase of over 170 films, shorts and documentaries, including 15 Emirati productions. Cinema-goers also had the chance to meet their favourite movie stars and directors thanks to the series of ‘In Conversation With...’ Q&A talks. The festival, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Airports, Emirates, Jumeirah and the Investment Corporation of Dubai, draw to a close with the premiere screening of American Hustle, directed by David O. Russell and starring actors Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Louis CK and Robert De Niro. Also shown were: the critically acclaimed drama 12 Years A Slave by Steve McQueen, featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt; Justin Chadwick’s Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris; John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr Banks, with Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson; and August: Osage County, starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. The festival's Muhr Awards selected the best amongst 90 films, shortlisted from over 3,500 submissions from 143 countries; amongst 16

the winners were Omar, a part-Emirati, part-Palestinian production directed by Oscar-nominated Palestinian director Hany Abu Assad, and Ilo Ilo, by Singaporean director Anthony Chen. A successful night of charitable effort was also on the agenda: over US$1 million was raised to help displaced Syrian children and their families to get through the winter, thanks to the charity auction 'One Night to Change Lives' organised by DIFF, Dubai Cares and Oxfam, and held at the Armani Hotel inside the Burj Khalifa, with the presence of many VIP guests including actors Rooney Mara, Mark Ruffalo and Naomie Harris, and Bollywood stars Arjun Rampal and Rahul Bose. The auction's top bid was a one-of-a-kind Aston Martin Vanquish, designed to celebrate 50 years of James Bond, finished with a ‘Skyfall’ silver exterior and 20-spoke diamond-turned gloss black wheels. Other prizes included exclusive film tickets to the next Bond premiere, tickets to the world premiere of Captain America donated by actress and Oxfam supporter Scarlett Johansson, and a selection of iconic Bond memorabilia. dv

Capital of the World dubai Expo 2020 is finally a reality: dubai is now preparing to deliver the most multicultural, joyful and futuristic exhibition the world has ever seen, and to welcome millions of new tourists. words laura volpi

t is now official: World Expo 2020 will be in Dubai, the first time ever that this 160-year-old event will be hosted in the Middle East. On the day of the announcement each flaming firework blasting off the Burj Khalifa made the crowd's cheers grow louder and louder, and the palpable sense of pride and joyful excitement sweeping Dubai is made even more extraordinary by the fact that this is arguably the most multicultural city on the planet, with a population made of over 200 different nationalities. This is why, whilst firmly rooted in Emirati culture and tradition, this Expo is not going to belong to Dubai only: it is going to belong to the world. In this context, the theme chosen for the 2020 exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future' â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is even more meaningful. To support Dubai Expo 2020, the UAE is expected to award an estimated US$35 billion (Dhs129 billion) in construction and other supplier contracts in 2014 alone; after all, this is the third-largest global event after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. And exactly like the Olympic Games, the World Expo is a celebration of excellence that has roots in the past yet still today makes the world stop and watch in amazement. Dubai's incredible development over the last few decades is unprecedented, and the celebrations for the Expo win seamlessly merged with those marking the 42nd anniversary of the birth of the union. Now Dubai has the task to prove to the world that it is able to deliver on a global scale, and everything seems to be right on track to put in place the best Expo the world has ever seen. New hotels are opening every day and many more are due to open in the near future. Together, they are expected to welcome approximately 20 million visitors per year by 2020, many of whom will come for Expo 2020, the majority of whom will likely be from outside the UAE, marking the largest number of international visitors in Expo history. The Expo will look at the future without forgetting the rich Emirati heritage and culture, which is reflected in the design of the exhibition's pavilions. The Expo site will be in Jebel Ali, inside the new global aerotropolis of Dubai World Central, and will cover more than four square kilometres. Inspired by the structure of typical Arabian souks, a series of interlinked pavilions, connected by a central square, will explore the sub-themes of mobility, sustainability and opportunity. A high-tech photovoltaic fabric structure will provide shade for the walkaways between areas, and will generate half of the Expo's energy requirements, transforming at night into a canvas for atmospheric lighting and digital projections. Several methods of alternative transportation, including a sight-seeing gondola, will link the main entrance to the exhibition area, helping to make this a highly sustainable and energy-efficient project. After the end of the Expo in 2021, the three main pavilions will be combined and transformed into a permanent exhibition space, which will house a National Museum to celebrate the achievements of the Expo. Through this increased global exposure the tourism industry, not only in Dubai but all around the UAE, will get an incredible 18

boost; Expo 2020 forms part of a long-term vision to ensure national development, sustainable economy and a prosperous future for the whole country. Dubai will see even faster development, especially in terms of transport, residential and hospitality infrastructures. “The Expo win marks a start of a new era in Dubai’s evolution and will be a catalyst for real estate development,” says international real estate consultant Cluttons. Projects that might have been stalled because of the recession are now likely to be revived and renovated. Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), the Government of Dubai Authority, recently announced that the world’s tallest commercial tower, to be built as part of the Free Zone Business Park expansion plans and due to be started in 2015, is to be named ‘Burj 2020’ in honour of Dubai’s Expo 2020 win. The construction of the Dubai Metro Purple Line is said to have been expedited in order to be ready for 2020, and Musanada, the Abu Dhabi General Services company, recently announced that a new Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway will be built, at a cost of Dhs2.1 billion, creating a major 62 kilometre-long traffic artery between the two emirates. With a combination of innovation, education and entertainment, the plans for Expo 2020 reflect all the great qualities that make Dubai a city that millions of people are proud to live in. hill the champagne. Winter is the time to indulge at one of the world’s most coveted destinations for snow and sport. Nestled high in the mountaintops or luxuriating in a cool, resort-inspired destination, the drudgeries of the day are cast aside and the spirit is rejuvenated.

CANADIAN COMFORT It’s uplifting. One hundred and twenty kilometres north of Vancouver, skiing reaches new heights at Whistler Blackcomb. Rated as one of the best ski destinations in the world, it’s the winner of numerous international awards and accommodates the crème de la crème of serious sports enthusiasts. Host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, its signature attraction is the PEAK 2 PEAK gondola, which spans the 4.4 kilometres between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains; an 11-minute journey connects the high alpine terrain of both mountains. It holds world records for the longest unsupported span of 3.024 kilometres, the highest lift of its kind, at 436 metres above the valley floor, and the longest continuous lift system on the globe. Guests who want the ultimate ski experience can also participate in the exclusive ‘Ski with an Olympian’ programme at the Whistler Blackcomb Snow School. Hotel accommodation includes the classic Four Seasons Whistler, the modern Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside and the newest addition, the Pan Pacific Whistler Village Center. 20

THE ROYAL TREATMENT It’s the home of the chicest chalets and regal resorts: St Moritz. Since 1864 this legendary Swiss ski destination (St Moritz registered its name as a trade mark in 1986 – the first resort to do so – and since then the name has been protected in around 50 countries) has been the place for celebrities and royals to sashay, including Alfred Hitchcock, Brigitte Bardot, Greta Garbo, the Kennedy family and the Shah of Persia. But it’s the spa centres (it was originally a destination famed for its therapeutic springs), culinary events, five-star dining and legendary hotels – such as the Kempinski Hotel de Bains and Badrutt’s Palace – that have kept the jet-setters coming back for over a century. Sunny days for almost 300 days of the year make it an ideal site for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing, as well as for exclusive events such as the ‘White Turf’ horse race on the frozen lake, Cartier World Polo Cup on Snow and the St Moritz Match sailing race when temperatures rise. ADVENTURES IN ASPEN Rocky Mountain high. Aspen is the US equivalent of posh European ski resorts, with a reputation as the indulgence of choice for celebrities in need of a quick escape from the drudgeries of stardom. With four world-class mountains within the area, Aspen boasts diverse sporting options, complete with a ski pass valid at all four mountains. Even pets can have a hospitable holiday: hotels, restaurants, retailers

and even local banks all have amenities specific to dogs travelling with their owners. Events at Aspen are diverse, ranging from the stylish annual Food and Wine Classic to the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The accommodation of choice for the elite on retreat is Little Nell. The region’s reigning luxury property has been a World’s Best Hotel winner since 2007 and has earned awards for its culinary — as well as luxury — amenities. ITALIAN ALPS Ciao, bella! The most stylish winter sports enthusiasts can be found in Cortina d’Ampezzo, one of Italy’s premiere tourist destinations.

Recently declared an UNESCO World Heritage site, the resort sits in a valley hemmed in by the Ampezzan peaks — some of which reach to 3,000 metres tall. The former Olympic site is also home to cultural and luxury amenities, including museums exploring fossils and ancient crafts — and even an observatory. After taking their long physical and mental journeys, guests can relax in the one of the resort’s ultimate ski palaces. The world-renowned Cristallo Palace hotel was born in the Belle Epoque and has been the choice hotel for global royalty and celebrities for centuries, while the Hotel Miramonti Majestic Grand, another star-studded, regal property, was featured in the James Bond classic For Your Eyes Only.

PEAK OF LUXURY With enough cosmopolitan charm to move mountains, Gstaad is the favourite southwest spot for the poshest ski aficionados in Switzerland. Premiere luxury boutiques make shopping as much of a sport as celebrity-sighting, and over 1,000 different events, such as the Menuhin Festival and the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open tennis tournament, will tempt guests to become fulltime residents — and with neighbours like Jeanne Moreau and Johnny Hallyday as well as boarding schools for the international elite, it’s hard to resist. Even its hotels are in the international spotlight. first impression is also the last impression – and nowhere does this adage hold truer than at a country’s airport. As the first point of contact for a visitor, Dubai International (DXB) is the ideal personification of the dynamic city of Dubai. What started out as a humble flying strip in 1960 is the world’s second busiest international airport today and has even set a number of world records. Dubai International’s exponential rise to success is reflective in many ways of the UAE’s growth itself. In 2020 when 25 million visitors land in this desert oasis, DXB is sure not only to impress them but will also awe inspire them. TERMINAL 1 DXB’s rise to popularity can be traced back to the opening of the first concourse (now referred to as Concourse C) in 2000. Built as part of the first phase of the general aviation expansion project at a cost of Dhs2 billion, the facility, which serves Terminal 1, increased the airport’s capacity from 10 million to 25 million. By 2002, it won DXB the rank of the second fastest growing airport in the world according

to Airports Council International (ACI). In 2003, the facility handled around 18 million passengers and firmly established itself as the aviation hub of the Middle East. Able to handle 20 million passengers annually, nearly 100 airlines operate out of T1. Most of the T1 complex is made up of Concourse C (CC) which spans 800 metres and it is connected to the check-in area by a 300 metre long underground tunnel featuring travelators. T1 comprises 3 levels while the adjoining CC rises up to six levels which house the Dubai Duty Free (DDF), Dubai International Hotel, 50 boarding gates and an array of lounges including First and Business Class lounges, private lounges, Marhaba and customer service lounges. TERMINAL 2 Terminal 2 (T2) was opened in 1998 to alleviate congestion at Terminal 1 and cater to scheduled and charter flights from the CIS region, Iran and southeast Asia. T2 is now better known as the hub of Dubai’s budget airline flydubai, whose operational network

Terminal 2 is currently undergoing a phased expansion plan to accommodate the surge in passenger numbers; once the refurbishment is complete it will cater to up to 10 million passengers annually. Phase 1 of this expansion was completed in April last year following which passengers were treated to more expansive terminal space, an enhanced Dubai Duty Free, richer dining experiences as well as welcoming retreat to a new Marhaba lounge. A new departures area, boarding gates, check-in counters as well as service enhancements were also a part of the phase 1 expansion. Phases 2 and 3 are expected to be completed next year and will enhance the passenger experience by providing a bigger arrival area and double the number of baggage claim carousels to six. TERMINAL 3 Dubai International’s Terminal 3 (T3) is dedicated for the exclusive use of Emirates. Terminal 3 along with its associated airside facility of Concourse B succeeded in increasing DXB’s total capacity to 60

CoNCouRsE D oN ThE hoRIzoN as DXB throttles ahead at breakneck speed to take over as the world’s busiest international airport, there are a number of plans in place to help it accommodate increased passenger numbers. One of these is Concourse D (CD) which is currently under construction. The 65,000m2 Concourse D will accommodate up to 18 million passengers a year, increasing the capacity of Dubai International to 90 million. It will be the new home of more than 100 airlines that currently operate from Dubai International’s Terminal 1. The new building will be linked to Terminal 1 – which is also undergoing refurbishment to bring it in line with the new standards in Concourse D. The new concourse is set to enhance passenger experience as it allows Dubai airports to incorporate new ways of improving service for international airlines and their passengers, shorten the passenger journey and present a wider range of retail and food outlets catering for all tastes. In keeping with the need of the times, CD will be a truly “green” addition to DXB. The new building will implement several green initiatives that will reduce the environmental impact of the new facility such as adopting recycling programmes during construction, the use of renewable energy as well as utilising locally sourced and recycled building materials. 192 solar panels will generate 1.8% of CD’s total power requirement while daylight sensors and less heat-intensive lighting will help reduce the energy consumption of the building. TERMINAL 1 REfuRBIshMENT a major upgrade of Terminal 1 (T1) is currently under way. The upgraded terminal, which is the departure and arrival point for more than 100 airlines, will offer passengers a more inviting and comfortable environment in line with the newer facilities across the other terminals at DXB. The Terminal 1 arrivals area is being completely revamped to improve passenger flow, resulting in a larger meeters and greeters area as well as a completely new retail environment with revamped food & beverage outlets. The front of the terminal building is also being expanded to accommodate a new indoor taxi waiting area and to provide a reception area for tour groups. january 2014

Dubai airports recently launched a new gateway to Dubai, al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC). DWC currently operates 24 hours a day with an a380-compatible, 4.5 km runway. Facilities include 64 aircraft stands, a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower, cargo facilities, and a 66,000 square meters, single-level passenger terminal. Once fully developed, DWC will be the largest airport in the world with five runways and a capacity for 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo. Currently, the airport’s new passenger terminal can handle up to seven million passengers annually. Wizz air, jazeera airways and Gulf air currently operate out of DWC with other airlines such as Qatar airways expected to launch operations shortly.

NEw AiRLiNE chooSES Dwc Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific will move its 7 weekly freighter operations to the new al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central, beginning 1st of February 2014. Their 14 weekly passenger operations to destinations such as amsterdam, London, Paris and Milan, will remain at Dubai International. Cathay Pacific Country Manager for uaE and Qatar, Brian yuen, said: “DWC is designed to support logistics well into the future and we believe the move will better serve us and bring our service level to a new high.” Cathay Pacific airways has a fleet of 24 Boeing 747 freighters, flying to a total of 43 destinations around the world, making it one of the world's leaders amongst international air cargo carriers. The group has recently launched new scheduled freighter services to Guadalajara, Mexico, as part of their plan of expansion. Cathay’s move to DWC follows air France-KLM move to Dubai’s second airport earlier this year and Emirates SkyCargo’s announcement that it will relocated its freighter

operations to DWC in May next once its new 700,000 tonne a year facility has been opened. “The list of network cargo airlines at DWC continues to grow,” says Helen Woodrow, VP of Forecasting & research at Dubai airports. “That in turn boosts traffic growth and builds on the airport’s growing reputation as an emerging cargo hub.”

World-class cHallenGer dv speaks to Brian Wilkie, CEO of Dubai-based charity Gulf For Good, businessman and MBE.

rian Wilkie came to Dubai in 1976 for one day and fell in love instantly. Since then he has set up the Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre (DUCTAC), founded the charity Gulf For Good â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which enjoys sponsorship from the Dubai Duty Free Foundation among others â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which helps disadvantaged kids in the poorest countries in the world, and in 2008 was the recipient of an MBE by HH Queen Elizabeth II.

How did Gulf For Good come to life? It started in 2001 after some friends and I cycled to Cuba in aid of a British charity. We wanted to do more: we started with Mount Kilimanjaro and we raised enough money for four ambulances. Now we have completed 45 challenges in 12 years.

What makes Gulf For Good unique? As far as I know we are the only charity that helps kids by doing challenges in the countries where they live. We also give immediate help: we build houses, plant trees, paint walls, dig wells, and so on. When you meet the people you are helping, it has a huge influence on your life.

What has been your favourite challenge so far? It is very difficult to choose, as they are all so different... Maybe the Annapurna Circuit, in Nepal: 12 days in high altitude to build an orphanage in Kathmandu. It was very tough, but it was worth it.

What has been your biggest success? The first time we did the Everest-based camp we raised money to build a hospital in eastern Nepal, an area where 300,000 people had only one part-time doctor. If you were pregnant and poor, say, you had to walk more than 40 kilometres across the Himalayas to get treatment. Since the hospital has been built, the death rate amongst pregnant women and children under 5 has dropped by two-thirds.

What does it mean to have the support of dubai duty Free? The DDF Foundation has been sponsoring us for the last four years and they have been brilliant: three of their staff even went on a challenge last year. We both try to help kids and believe that helping others is something that can be enjoyed. DDF have a joie de vivre about them, much more than other companies.

Why should people choose to support Gulf For Good? It will change their life, they will get fit, they will see parts of the world that tourists very rarely see, and they will help poor kids that in most cases have no other chances.

any advice for entrepreneurs wanting to settle in dubai? Dubai is entrepreneurial, a fun place to be, very safe, and it is a place where history is always made. Be creative, stick to it, have fun, look after your people and look after the accounts.

What are your plans for the future? I am taking part in the Phuket Triathlon! Also, we have a plan to expand Gulf For Good over the next five years, and to have more charity challenges in

collaboration with great companies, like Dubai Duty Free.

How was meeting the Queen when you received your MBe? It was brilliant and very humbling. It was at Windsor Castle and was probably the proudest moment of my life. The queen was very gracious; she asked about Dubai. After it, we happened to sail on the final voyage of the QE2 from Southampton to Dubai.

Where did you fly on your latest holiday? I went to France, where we go every year, to Provence.

How do you overcome jetlag? There is an acupressure kit that you can buy, called No More Jetlag, which is great. I also try to sleep on arrival at my normal time, and I fly Emirates: they are much more comfortable than anybody else.

Is there anything you would not fly without? My night-flight sleeping pills and a good book.

What is your favourite place to relax in dubai? I love to stay in my garden, but the Capital Club is the place where I like to go more than anywhere else. dv
